Rambles about Berserk Deluxe Volume 1 (aka V1-3) - Part 1

OKAY WELL OBVIOUSLY NO ONE WILL REMEMBER ME, but whatever, if you’re here you’re about to start getting flooded with Berserk meta again because I am rereading the series and I started doing it on Twitter but holy crap what a nightmare that is.

Things to note:

-I like Griffith, if that’s a problem for you then I... I don’t care, have fun with that, I don’t know. -I barely remember how Tumblr works -Honestly a lot of this is probably just going to be me talking about things I already talked about years ago but realtalk I don’t read my own old meta so like, I have no idea what i said back in the day.

So without further ado,

Rambles about Berserk Deluxe Volume 1 (aka V1-3)

1. I remember back in my Berserk fandom days there was a disagreement between fans on whether the Black Swordsman arc was necessary at all and whether it should have been situated after the golden age instead of having the golden age arrive as this prolonged flashback.

The argument was generally that the Black Swordsman arc spoils the end of the Golden Age, which it DOES but... to me that's skewing the importance a bit, right like the Golden Age is a flashback, the whole point of the entire arc is to explain what's happening in the main story which is everything *except* the Golden Age. For various reasons the GA is the most famous/popular part and obviously the most adapted part so it does change the way people might see this since so many people come into the manga through one of the animes that really only touched on the Hawks era, but it doesnt change the fact that, in the manga, the Golden Age is literally just a long flashback, so you're *supposed* to know how it ends.

I also think the Black Swordsman arc provides some necessary context for understanding what happens in the GA, especially re: Griffith's mindset since Griffith himself doesn't talk much about his thoughts or feelings which has made him rather easy to misinterpret... which is actually what drove me out of Berserk fandom and into JoJo's back in the day because I literally could not stomach another argument about whether Griffith is a sociopath (no).

2. Also, the scene with Guts in the snake duke guy's dungeon (and just his early relationship with Puck in general) is pretty interesting when you consider the much later revelation about his history with the flower elf. Obviously that was almost certainly not something Miura knew he would add when writing it, but as retroactive logic it does work very well - last time he left an elf get attached to him she ended up killing herself so you know, why do it again?

It really continues into his early attitude with Puck in general, even in the later chapters until he gets used to having the guy around.

3. Going into the priest-and-daughter chapter (The Brand), it's interesting to see how much of Griffith's stupid Promrose speech he's still carrying around with him.

Priest: My nephew became a mercenary and died

Guts: WELL THAT WAS HIS DREAM RIGHT, I MEAN HE DID WHAT HE WANTED NO MATTER WHAT, SO WHAT HE DIED ITS FINE, WE’RE FINE.

4. He’s also inherited Griffith’s nasty habit of swallowing his guilt by pretending he’s actually totally cool with people dying because of him. I remember back in the day people used to say Guts comes off as a psychopath or a villain type early on, and I kind of get it, but I do think it’s fairly obvious from the beginning that he’s bullshitting himself. And then of course that becomes VERY evident after his encounter with the slug count and Theresia.

4. In an old interview Miura had mentioned that Casca’s presence post-Eclipse, really the reason she survived the Eclipse to begin with, was to prevent Guts from dissociating form the Eclipse and letting the memory go dull. That does make sense to the writer in me, but the reader in me is like, how could he forget, the eclipse never really stopped happening for him. hes still being attacked everywhere he goes.

I actually kind of miss the horrible effect of the brand.

5. This has nothing to do with the story but if I’m paying 50 bucks for a huge deluxe edition of Berserk, I feel like I should have gotten the colored pages in color. Just saying!

6. I really just... love Guts so much? His wildness especially in those early days, his apparent fearlessness which is actually just a pretense since per Puck he’s actually afraid basically all the time AND WHO WOULDN’T BE?

7. I know this gets said a lot but Guts’ sword is obviously used metaphorically a LOT, I mean if I keep doing these things (why,...) it will just come up over and over again, him and his heap of raw iron. But also all his other swords.

8. One of the things I really deeply love about Guts is watching him fight. I could watch the battle scenes in the OVAs forever, and the thing I love about it, aside from watching this person who is in so many ways unsure of himself and his value and his relationships suddenly become absolutely sure and confident and just transform into a force of nature. I bring this up here because I reached the part in the slug count story where Guts reveals the depth of his skill with a sword and its one of my favorite moments in the Black Swordsman arc.

9. Guts and his rage at people being nice to him.

10. So one of the things Miura did a lot is... this kind of sequence where you get a visual parallel and often text about someone else that is meant to clue the reader in on what’s going on with a different character entirely. This is the first of them - where we start to understand what happened with Guts through this comparison with Vargas, who was mutilated and lost his loved ones to monsters - the specifics of the mutilation are even direct parallels to Guts’ wounds from the Eclipse. In some cases this storytelling technique is very difficult for me to interpret and analyze because I’m not an especially visual person? But I do make an effort to pay attention to it because it’s done a LOT and in some cases those parallels are the only way you ever have a situation or emotion directly addressed (eg. the King and Griffith in the dungeon, which is just the King and Griffith talking about the King in a way that we’re meant to understand applies to Griffith but yeah anyway that’s several volumes in the future).

Also the ENTIRE final confrontation with the Slug Count is literally 75% this exact storytelling technique so its not surprising to me that the first use is a parallel between Guts and Vargas, particularly with the later parallels between the Count and Fermto/Griffith.

11. And there he goes again, covering his pain and guilt and self-hatred with rage and disdain. Genuinely one of the things that frustrates me about Western Berserk fandom is the stubborn inability to perceive the nuance in Griffith’s character yes, but also in Guts’s character. He is so often perceived as just the metal badass on a vengeance quest because he hates Griffith so much and hes actually a pretty complicated person with extremely complicated relationships with himself and Casca and Griffith and so much of it is literally just stated outright that I have no fucking idea how people miss it, it is the weirdest thing I have ever encountered in any fandom ever and I don’t understand why it happens. Anyway.

12. So, the obvious interpretation for this scene would be that he’s thinking about the ever ambitious Hawk who ended up self-destructing... but I actually think he’s talking about himself. He’s shitting on himself for having dared to imagine that he could step out of Griffith’s shadow and do something that made him Griffith’s equal and, in the process, ended up abandoning the people he loved in a way that led to Griffith turning into a demon and Casca being raped and going mad, killed his surrogate family and got him permanently maimed.

Now let me be clear, I don’t think it’s his fault. But I think he thinks it’s his fault because he aimed too high and accidentally broke Griffith. Which, I mean, he is aware that he’s the one who did that by this point.

And that is why, even though he identifies with Vargas, even though he is frustrated and pained by Vargas’s situation, he also holds Vargas in contempt. Because he sees himself in Vargas, and he hates himself.

August

hello hi people of the internet... i know i'm late yet again for the monthly post and that's why i'm writing the August one on the morning of September 2nd [fidgets] but i hope wherever you are, you're all enjoying life!

uhhh i'm gonna have to kneel down or something i am TERRIBLY sorry for being not punctual with the posting but in my defense honestly August is as normal as life has always been for me lsdkslfk so nothing really happened. unless you count me somehow gravitated back towards western stan twitter again after leaving it in 2012 as a major event, then yep. August in one word is monotonous. though i appreciate it so much, me being in my comfort zone heheh

and yes, the main fixation that dragged me back into western stan twitter is none other than Stranger Things. boom. which is weird because the last time i'm so preoccupied with anything from that side of twitter was in 2012 and all The Hunger Games/Divergent/The Maze Runner/Shadowhunter hype, and Stranger Things was released on 2016 aka six full years ago. this time i don't even know what made me so engrossed in Stranger Things but my porte d'entree is the one and only season 4's Eddie Munson. he has just a few screentimes here and there but i'm hooked. he's now one of my comfort characters, as i feel i resonate with a lot of his antics and personality... not to mention Joseph Quinn who brought him to life is really my type of guy (yes, joining Sebastian Vettel and Marcus Rashford) i'm still seething with the fact the Duffer bros or whoever decided to kill Eddie off. it's lazy writing i swear to god i can go berserk on how he could've survived the demobats attack while still saving Dustin and everyone else.

so now i'm mourning Eddie's death with reading fics (god bless ao3 and all the authors!) with canon divergence elective creative choice where he's alive and Max survives Vecna's curse and everyone is happy, healthy, and well. and even if any of them died... it's because of old age and they spend the last day surrounded by their real, found family. i guess at this point you guys can tell i love the Hawkins party so much and how shared trauma bring them closer than ever with a bond that will never break [sheds tears]

next up is the topic of coldplay's Music of the Spheres world tour (!!!) it's so funny how everyone now wants to go to the shows because the fact that coldplay is that cool is viral on tiktok when everyone used to say coldplay is shit LMAO and i love to see it! sold out stadiums in every country they go to! and the best part is, on Humankind music video, coldplay put in Southeast Asia leg of the tour hint!!! i'm so happy i have saved money for this, i will definitely try to chase them. my options are Indonesia (of course, i'm still not giving up hope they will come to Jakarta), Malaysia, Singapore, Bangkok, Manila, Seoul, and Tokyo. i will come for you @ coldplay!!! so, who's gonna come along with me?

oh i almost forgot - i can't believe just five days after my last post Seb announced his retirement from Formula 1 on July 28... when he made an instagram account and posted the video of his announcement i felt so dumbfounded, struck with many emotions, i literally froze for a minute taking it in. sadness mainly, but it's just me lamenting a wasted potential, though knowing Seb prioritizing spending time with his family sealed the deal for me. gonna enjoy the rest of 2022 season as it's his last, i'll miss him so much. now i kinda get it why some people stopped watching a sport after their fav athlete retired lol but then i reckon that's just like no longer having the attracting point for something that you're used to be interested in. though i think i'll still watch F1 just because.

i think that's all for August??? i'll update again on September post hehe (my dad's bday soon!!!) alright, see ya 😊

«WandaVision»: 3. Wanda, dear, do we have a problem?

Boom! We have a mention of Pietro, Ultron, Shakespeare (ah, Vision's an ntellectual), neighbors with a slight horror in their eyes, unjustified speed of events, as well as the subtext "Wanda in her world is a king and the god". And yes, that awesome soap ads! The slogan is a reference to Wanda's newfound abilities, I think. I keep my eyes on Agnes and prepare an invitation for her to go to the evil characters' bench. You can't be sure of anything, but who knows, she is able use the situation for her own purposes and be a helper of Mephisto.

Let's talk about the kids and the speed of everything.

I've never been a fan of Billy and Tommy in the first place. I don't understand all the excitement associated with them, and I remember that everything ended after their appearence... badly. Besides. I've always wondered why Wanda rode into the magical wilds and didn't think/want to solve the problem any other way. Adoption, for example. Donor sperm. Something else. Why was it necessary to create such problems, taking pieces of Mefisto´s soul, and thereby laying a huge dynamite under her family?

Let's say, our Wanda goes with a different vector, without the insane desire of a crazy momma-wannabe, but the children are still demonic? Playing with Mephisto's shadow isn't for nothing, is it?

I can't help but notice that Wanda's pregnancy in the comics also appeared suddenly. I might have forgotten something, because I was laughing so hard while reading the pages, but it was like this, the quotes are not accurate.

Wanda: I WANT A REAL FAMILY WITH KIDS. WANTWANTWANT!

And Wanda is on the eve of her confinement. I don't remember Vision's reaction...

Our Vision was as surprised as I was, because in normal life, it does not happen, even if you are a synthesoid (five points to Marvel for mentioning this term! Finally! We waited for the long time!). I felt like I was watching the Sims with their woohoo and three-day pregnancy. It was all very fast, and I couldn't even blink. I didn't like that part, honestly. Something is missing. I also don't like that Marvel didn't focus much on Wanda and Vision, and instead our characters existed for fast-paced development, plot tools for introducing the twins, and Geraldine-Monica's "deportation" beyond the bubble. In other words, long periods of time are reduced to the limit.

A small question. The child is already doing magic (and Wanda calmly allows)?

Creepy moment. Let's talk about Vision again.

I thought that my screen glitched or the cat walked on the keyboard, so I didn't notice... Wanda, we have a real problem... And a new question. In the opinion for the first two series, I posted a list of the questions and now it gonna be expanded. We're still walking in the fog.

So... Vision is an illusion? Highly likely! Who would give us a resurrected Vision, right? Marvel won't let us be happy, and neither will Wanda.-_-

But if Vision was an illusion, controlled, a Wanda's puppet, then why did he even begin to think about what was happening, to understand that something was happening? Why? And how many times has this actually happened, off-screen? Fic-writers, let's go! And I'm probably going with you.

I also remember Vision's face when their dinner went wrong. So what are you, Vision? And by the way, how much control do you have? The feelings are your own, aren't they? Yes, Marvel?! Don't mess with me here. Don't make the shippers angry, they're already traumatized by the comic book versions of Wanda and Vision.

A lyrical digression.

There is one more thing that I want to touch, connected with all above. A certain Twitter user previously guessed or knew the names by which Wanda and Vision will be in the series. Before the release of the series, I ask you to note. I'm talking about Illusion and Glamour. Back then no one took it seriously, but after the release of episodes, the account began to be studied almost under a microscope. There is a long history with the renaming of acc, creating new acc with the same info, it's not the point. The same acc wrote that what we see isn't Vision, but Wonder Man, who thinks he is Vision..

I have a confession. I can't stand Wonder Man and everything that goes with him, including his shenanigans with Wanda. I just hate this stuff. Who doesn't know: Wonder Man and Vision have a connection in the comics, Wonder Man's brainwaves formed the basis of Vision's, correct me if I am wrong. So, technically, they're kind of brothers. Difficult, you may say? It's comics, kids! In short, if it really turns out to be so — I will consider it a personal insult. I'm sorry, but I love Vision and I watch the show with him, not with someone else.

Also, in general, Marvel owed us one moment, and it's good if they remembered about it and give a serial explanation: for all the years of Endgame, you did not try to do anything with the Vision's body? Where is it? In what condition? Tony forgot and didn't remember Vision?

Screw it!

Okay, okay, I've calmed down. I return to the subject and stop burning with righteous anger.

Illusion or not, we know from the trailers that Vision will posibly receive an information about his death. I see how it can go: It turns out that Vision learns the truth, Wanda is not there to stop him, he decides to find out everything from Wanda, but the moment is not very good, because the agents of S. W. O. R. D doing their job, and Wanda is already in the berserk mode... And it ends badly.

Creepy moment. A sad moment. Give Wanda some cocoa and a warm blanket. Please.

That was full of pain. Wanda could try and run from her memories, or force herself to forget them, but they are coming back with suspicious questions from a stranger, with jewelry on someone's neck. Wanda's upset, the neighbors ara glitching (to Vision´s concern), and under the iceberg of family life with two newborns and a lullaby for them, there are the abyss, hiding... Creepy and painful.

I am kinda dissaponted with the 3rd episode, but still enjoyed some moments and still want to save Wanda from this darkness.

My Shadowlands Wish List

Now that we’re getting closer and closer to pre-patch and the inevitable launch of the expansion, I thought I’d rattle off a wish list of things I hope we get to see in Shadowlands, largely from a lore/story perspective. (Or rather, my stupid foot was hurting so badly I couldn’t concentrate on writing my fic properly, so I decided to ramble off some not-so-hot takes, honestly they’re pretty mild in the grand scheme of things). I was in the first alpha wave, so I’ve had a pretty good opportunity to play the game as it is thus far, and I did want to make it clear up front that I’m fully aboard the hype train. Shadowlands is looking like a great expansion for a number of different reasons, and while I do have a few areas of concern, on the whole I am currently feeling very positive. Please also note these are just my random, late-night personal musings - your mileage may vary, and that’s a-okay. Mild Shadowlands spoilers below the cut.

You Get A Customisation! You Get A Customisation! Everybody Gets A Customisation! This one is pretty much a no-brainer. I don’t necessarily think Blizzard need to have absolutely every possible character customisation ready to go before launch, but I’d like them to continue adding further options over time. I move in a couple of different circles in Warcraft - I’m obviously involved in the writing/lore/character aspect of the game, but I’m also GM of a raiding guild and closely follow the gameplay/competitive side of things too - and customisation is one of those few things that gets everyone excited, regardless of their reason for playing the game. I’m looking forward to seeing a much more vibrant, unique and diverse Azeroth come Shadowlands pre-patch. (Mostly irrelevant side story - when Wrathion returned in the Patch 8.3 cinematics, my Twitter and lore Discords were basically going berserk with excitement, meanwhile there’s a hundred very confused dudes in my raiding guild who don’t read quest text being all, “What the hell is a ‘Wrathion’?”. I live in two different worlds, honestly). Another reason I’m excited about customisation (and I’m probably in a very small minority on this one) is because I actually really dislike allied races, and I think it gives Blizzard an option to add more flavour to character creation in the game without always having to cobble together a new race. I honestly think they should have simply gone for sub-race customisation from the beginning, to avoid having to ass-pull allied races out of nowhere. Using customisation over allied races also makes it far simpler to give something to both factions (e.g. high elves), or to add something for one faction without necessarily having to always add something to the other faction to keep things in balance. Giving an extra hairstyle to humans but not orcs generally isn’t going to cause that much of a fuss, but if one faction were given an allied race and the other wasn’t because there wasn’t a logical racial option, there would be a shitstorm of epic proportions. So you end up in a situation where one faction* gets saddled with a really random, sucky allied race just to be ‘fair’. *The Alliance. It’s the Alliance. Leave Britney Arthas Alone Arthas has never been a personal favourite of mine, but I respect that he has a fantastic story, and that he’s a cornerstone of Warcraft lore. His story is both satisfying and complete, and that’s exactly why they should leave him the hell alone. I don’t mind if he’s visited in flashbacks (like the Bastion cinematic), or if we explore how he affected still living characters (e.g. Jaina, Sylvanas, Bolvar), but I think it would be a mistake to try to make him a central character in the expansion. In contrast, someone like Kael’thas is an excellent choice for an additional arc, because his original story was a bit all over the place and there is still plenty of room for his character development. Arthas doesn’t need it, and I don’t think the minute potential gain is worth the risk of retroactively making the rest of his story worse. On a similar note... Warcraft III Was Released Nearly 20 Years Ago, It’s Time to Move On The Warcraft RTS was a landmark series of games, and was obviously without them we wouldn’t have the World of Warcraft. However, I think the future health of Warcraft’s lore depends on the ability of the writers to grow the story outwards and upwards, not to always default back to the same handful of characters for nostalgia’s sake. While characters like Jaina, and Thrall, and Sylvanas are great, they can’t carry the narrative forever. Shadowlands represents a unique opportunity to build up the next generation of characters and to blow the cosmology of the universe wide open. From what I’ve seen on the alpha/beta, Blizzard are definitely taking a step in this direction, and I’m hoping that’s what we get instead of Patch 9.2 - Oh Look, It’s Thrall Again. On an additionally similar note... Sylvanas Is Crazy, And She Needs To Go Down (I don’t actually think she’s crazy, but one should never miss the opportunity for an Avatar reference). One of my complaints about the recent lore developments in Warcraft its that it’s starting to feel a lot less like the World of Warcraft, and more like the Sylvanas of Warcraft. She’s playing 469D chess; she’s behind everything; she’s the sole driving force of the narrative. I don’t think that works in an MMO that’s meant to tell the story of an entire expanded universe. It makes things feel small. And before I get eaten alive, I want to be clear that I don’t dislike Sylvanas as a character - in fact, I think she’s very compelling and on a night when my foot wasn’t killing me so much I’d be happy to get into an argument as to why she’s actually one of the most consistent and well-written characters in the World of Warcraft. I don’t necessarily think she needs to die, either, but I think it’s time for her narrative to come to a close to make room for other characters in the story, and I don’t think Blizzard are going to get a much better opportunity to give her a satisfying ending than in a death-themed expansion. Justice for Tyrande (Or Vengeance, Whatever Uther Wants to Call It) Tyrande got done dirty in Battle for Azeroth, probably more than any other character. I’m not a massive night elf fangirl by any means, but their entire race was basically used as grist for the mill in Sad Orc Dad’s story, with no next to no narrative follow-up besides a cool cinematic that went absolutely nowhere in game. Outside the game, her character then got subjected to the cacophonous misogynistic crowing of the fanbase that occurs whenever a female character dares to be angry in the World of Warcraft. Much like Jaina, she’s decried for being ‘crazy’ or ‘irrational’ for, you know, being pissed that her people and her homeland were wiped out in an act of wildly disproportional aggression. I don’t know about you guys, but that would tend to make me a wee bit testy, but maybe I’m crazy and irrational too. In any case, I want to see her go off in Shadowlands. Fuck ‘em up, girlfriend. You Get One Villain. If You Drop It, I’m Not Buying You Another One I think most people will agree with me that the two weakest expansions (at least from a narrative perspective) were Warlords of Draenor and Battle for Azeroth. There are a few reasons for this, but for me one of the biggest issues was that they were chop-and-change expansions. Both were advertised and started off with narratives and themes that were wildly different from where they finished up. Warlords was part Iron Horde expansion, part Legion expansion; BFA was part faction war expansion, part Old God expansion... and that’s exactly the problem. Both times, I felt like we got two half-done expansions, instead of one single, cohesive narrative experience. If you look at expansions like Wrath of the Lich King and Legion, both of which were very well received, a lot of their success hinges on their presentation of a consistent narrative with a clear goal for players within the story. The Lich King, for example, was a consistent and very present villain. He menaced you throughout your entire journey, and so his eventual defeat on top of Icecrown Citadel was meaningful and impactful. Defeating N’Zoth, by contrast, felt pretty hollow, as we hadn’t had enough narrative build up to really care about taking him down. Part of the reason I’m excited for Shadowlands is it looks like we’re getting a nice, focused story development that builds up to a logical and satisfying villain in the Jailer. Why Can’t We Be Friends? Look, I bleed blue. I love the Alliance... but the faction war should not continue to be a driving narrative element in the World of Warcraft. I don’t want the factions to be removed, I think they’re a core part of the Warcraft experience and I’d be pretty sad to have to let them go entirely, but the cycle of hating one another then teaming up in an uneasy alliance in order to defeat a bigger bad, only to go back to being at one another’s throats the next day is... tiresome.

Ideally, the war would have ended after Legion - it was the most logical place to do so, and I think it was a big missed opportunity that they ran with Battle for Azeroth immediately afterwards. Unfortunately, I think this means the Alliance is going to just have to forgive and forget, which doesn’t really make a lot sense at this point given everything that happened in BFA, but for the sake of the overall story, it might be a necessary sacrifice. That said... I Am Once Again Asking for Alliance Narrative Agency I know there are a lot of (valid) complaints to be had about the Horde storyline, but the one thing the Horde has always had over the Alliance is that they actually get to drive the narrative forward. The Alliance are pretty much exclusively reactionary, and in a lot of ways are side characters to the main Horde storyline. I’ve made this argument elsewhere, but it honestly wouldn’t be too hard to remove Anduin’s part in Saurfang’s storyline in Battle for Azeroth and have it turn out more or less exactly the same way... which says a lot about the importance of the Alliance in the overall storyline. In short, the Alliance are secondary players at best, and downright irrelevant at worst. One of my biggest hopes for Shadowlands is that we’ll actually get to see some Alliance narrative agency. To be clear, however, this does not mean a simple rehashing of Horde conflicts with a blue coat of paint. Alliance stories are not Horde stories, and nor should they be. Having an Alliance leader turn into a genocidal despot is not the only way to create conflict or agency in the story - there are plenty of opportunities for character growth, development and conflict on the Alliance side without having to have one of our leaders do a heel turn (e.g. Tyrande as the Night Warrior, Anduin dealing with his experience in the Maw, Jaina confronting the fates of people like Kael’thas and Arthas, Taelia meeting her father, etc.), and I really hope we get to see some of those narrative threads come to fruition. I Want to Mount Everything Add a hundred new mounts. Two hundred. A pot plant with googly eyes, the four hundredth Alliance horse, your mum. I’ll ride anything; I don’t even care. (Please note this is the most important opinion I have).

Sneak Peek??

Hiya! I write to you here, then you decide whether to publish or not.

You want questions and theories, so here they are! So, we know a little more about the Defenders, but from how Cade behaved we still don’t know everything about the Knights. Or he’s worried about essentially becoming long-lived and having to give up being with Tessa. I mean, if he’s going to protect a Defender, he has to be.

Now that it is confirmed that the two entities are Primus and Unicron, I am really confused: in short, I can understand the “purification” of souls and blah blah blah, but why Primus should destroy her own creations, to the point of exploiting a Defender and then groped to kill her descendants ? At this point the good between the two seems to be Unicron.

Then, the Autobots. Now they know that Mrs Bradshaw sabotaged Helex’s weapons systems, thus starting the war. Ironhide seemed the most pissed off of all, which makes me worry: will his relationship with Aubrey and Aj change? Will he look at them more suspiciously because “their mother’s blood runs in their veins”? And Sideswipe? He was not present at the meeting, but he must have heard the latest news from someone.

And regarding the twins, I really appreciated Sideswipe’s maturity. He hasn’t denied his feelings for Aj even once, which I actually kind of expected. And he hasn’t even pressured her about her relationship with Cade (who by the way I see a bit fragile)! Actually who worries me is Sunstreaker: he hasn’t rested well for a while, he doesn’t want to remember the mysterious femme, and I’m sure that to protect himself (or just to be a proud idiot) he will deny what he feels about Aj or say something like “You I see only as a good friend. ”

The relationship with Jazz is also in the balance, but I am sure that somehow they will be able to talk again without embarrassment. Jazz loves her too much not to care about her, and Aj is too fond of him to ignore him.

And then there are Morgan, the drones and MECH! How does Morgan control the drones? What did MECH (one of the most successful terrorist organizations in the Transformers universe, in my opinion) steal this time? And if they know about the talismans, they must have been involved with Primus and Unicron.

“Everything is different now,” says David, and this gives me a foretaste of an amazing chapter that will give me thousands of new theories and questions.

Oh, and when will Aj understand that Hemi and Arcee are a couple? And even if they aren’t, I ship them too much anyway! And how I loved Hemi’s story! You mentioned something on Tumblr, but here’s more in-depth! It’s so damn realistic and bittersweet: getting back into a relationship with your family that won’t be like it used to be. At least Hemi has better luck than many others.

In the unpublished review (in your last post I replied and sent you a link on the Twitter page about this issue) I didn’t write all of this, but there is the Defender and Ironhide part. And yes, I think too much and have essentially written a poem, but I can’t help it with your stories! And it’s important for an author to make their readers think.

@alybluelady (and @anyone who else is reading this lol) I looooove it. Yes send me all you theories they make me so happy! Obvi I can’t reply to everything you sent me b/c I am a stickler about spoilers (and usually it’s me who spoils it so I'm a stickler to myself and then I ignore myself it’s a weird balance to try and live with tbh).

ANYWAYS... I will say these things:

1. About Primus and Unicron, imagine it from their point of view. It’s easy for us to equate her with “mother of Cybertron” and that all of them are her children b/c in a sense that is very true. She created them. But nobody said she ever created them out of love for them. Think of Greek mythology Kronos, the titan who ate his children for his own greater good.

2. I’ve always seen Sides as the kind of guy who “feels what he feels and is unabashedly, unashamed of it”. Yes, he has his own personal insecurities about himself and his past (#trauma), and sometimes the fear of himself can get in the way of things (like him thinking Aj was in danger around him b/c of his berserker programming), but once that fear was proven wrong it left nothing in the way. He feels what he feels, and though he didn’t mean to say it out loud and potentially spook the quick to panic Aj, he stood by it.

As for Sunny? No comment😉

3. Last, but not least, who says it’s Morgan controlling the drones and not vice versa?👀

OK THAT’S IT I GOTTA STOP MYSELF.

On a non-spoiler side note, I love that you ship Hemi and Arcee together!! I actually plan on writing a drabble about what they did when they left base together all dressed up so keep an eye out for that! And on the topic of Hemi, that was something I planned on exploring for a while but I wanted to make sure I did it right. I didn’t want her to just be some “token LGBQT figure”. Just like any other character I've created, she has her own story and background that makes her who she is. And you’re right, she definitely has it lucky compared to a lot of stories similar to hers and I think the fact that she understands that, that she gets how lucky she is that her parents are finally trying, is part of what makes her who she is. I think my favorite line of Lil’Bit so far was from her in that chapter when she said, “...sometimes the people we love hurt us and they never repent for those sins. Sometimes they just become the monsters that haunt us.” Anyways, I should stop b/c I could talk about Hemi all day every day and this ramble is already starting to get too long lolol.

Last thing I'll say, I agree 100% that it’s important for authors to make their readers think. When I write, personally, I want to get y’all involved. I want you to be curious and try to figure out the next step just like Aj and them are. That’s why I loved hearing y’all’s theories so much b/c it means that I'm accomplishing something hah.

DL oneshot: Sleeping Beauty Shenanigans

Writing commission for @s-e-kwan

The vampires attend a play of Sleeping Beauty during the school Cultural Festival. The stars turn out to be Kanato, Ayato and...Yui?

Rated T - humour and some Ayayui

Warning: Lotsa crack, don’t take this one seriously

The day of the culture festival arrived, much to the delight of some and the dread of others. Yui had been one of the delighted, getting ready backstage while the other students from her class arranged the stage behind a red velvet curtain.

They were to perform a play of the famous fairy tale; Sleeping Beauty.

From within the audience, a few less than impressed Sakamakis sat, Shuu snoring quietly in his seat. Reiji tutted in disgust, arms folded. Subaru was sincerely trying not to get pissed off with all the chatter from the crowds, but if one more person bumped his leg when walking by the aisle-

Bump.

“OI!” He roared, glaring up and up and…up.

Yuma looked down, raising a brow and grinning toothily. “Heh, didn’t know you guys were watchin’ the play too.”

Reiji bristled at the sight of the four Mukami brothers casually taking seats next to them. “Why exactly are you here?”

"We came... to see Eve," Azusa stuffed some spiced popcorn into his mouth.

“Yes. Do you happen to know which role she’s playing?” Ruki asked.

Green eyes danced. “We don’t~ though Ayato and Kanato wouldn’t tell us either. They all looked so flustered fufu.”

“Laito?! Why are you here!” Subaru glared. “You’re in the same class!”

“I am?”

“YES!”

Laito chuckled. “Ohh, that’s right. I performed a little service for the dear teacher and she let me off the hook. Such a kind woman.”

Kou cut his eyes to the ceiling, texting to his fans on twitter, before the lights in the hall dimmed. A single spotlight turned to the stage. Everyone fell quiet and expectant as the curtains drew back, revealing a typical castle scene made up of props.

Ruki opened his program, blue-grey eyes briefly scanning the list of names and roles. No one else had bothered to get one. His gaze briefly alighted with a sadistic shine as he read Ayato’s role, before quietly folding the program away. It therefore came as no shock to him when after the parents were introduced at the party, Kanato kicked the cardboard door to the set down, dressed in a long cloak. The sleeves fell past his hands, but they didn’t deter him from snarling loudly:

“HOW DARE YOU NOT INVITE ME TO YOUR PARTY!”

“I-it’s the wicked fairy, come to curse us all!” The Queen wailed.

“NEVER MIND THAT, YOU WORMS. I’ll never forgive you for this! TEDDY will never forgive you!”

The King leaned across his throne to the Queen, whispering; “Teddy?”

“I CURSE ALL OF YOU! But uh…PARTICULARLY THAT BRAT IN THE CRIB. At 16 she’ll stab her ugly finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and DIE!” Kanato shrieked, holding Teddy up. Real flames burst to life on the curtains, though the audience only clapped and made noises of awe, thinking it part of the show.

Peering out on stage, Yui gasped. “K-Kanato! Remember our agreement, no fires! I promised you sweets didn’t I?”

The vampire glanced at her over his shoulder, expression blank. “Oh, Yui. Hm…yes I suppose you’re right,” he said, eerily calm once more.

Reiji sighed with vague relief when the fires died down, adjusting his glasses and glancing at Shuu’s seat, finding it empty. He rose a brow and looked down at his feet, where Shuu was curled up in the fetal position, rocking slightly.

“Uh…” Yuma leaned over. “He okay?”

“He’s fine,” Reiji dismissed.

The play carried on, with the curse being amended to a sleeping spell. Miraculously in the next scene, almost 16 years had passed and the princess had grown up into a beautiful-

“Ayato!” Subaru gaped, staring at the figure on stage standing in a pink frilly dress.

The vampire looked at him flatly, setting his hands on his hips. The Sakamakis and Mukami’s began to make strange, wheezy noises, holding back laughter. A random member of the audience sitting at the back burst into hysterics, throwing popcorn.

Reiji glanced at him, but didn’t recognise the student wearing shades. His feet were propped up on the back of someone else’s chair, sipping Guava juice.

How audacious, he thought with disgust.

“Ohh princess, you are so radiant! Be careful of your beauty though while attending the birthday party, a man might steal you away~” said the Queen.

Ayato tsked, folding his arms. “I reckon he’d steal you instead of me, D-cup.”

The Queen flushed red, and Yui hissed through the curtains. Something about making him takoyaki. Ayato rolled his eyes. “I mean, yeah. No sweat. The Great me will be careful,” he muttered, walking awkwardly offstage to go to the next scene.

With that passionate declaration came a scene change, and soon enough, Ayato was walking around the caste in a daze, fake passing out on a raised alter after pricking his finger. The narrator intoned in a bored voice that 100 years passed, the kingdom falling asleep right along with their princess.

Now Ruki raised his head, after getting in a short power nap. He smiled slightly when a petite woman padded onto the stage, tilting her chin up. She bore the title of ‘Prince’ almost admirably seriously. Reiji inwardly assessed her posture and quietly praised the foolish girl.

The other vampire’s stared at her with surprise. Even Shuu recovered enough to peer over the seats.

“She’s the prince?!” Subaru exclaimed, blinking.

"Komori is always so cute, but who knew she could look so handsome?” Came some whispers from the audience, a sentiment shared by the girls and boys alike.

Yuma tsked, grumbling in his seat. “Dumb kids. Don’t they get that she’s off limits?”

“Fufu~ adorable though isn’t it? Obviously though, I’m the one who’s going to steal little bitch away,” Laito mused to himself, blushing.

“GET LOST!” Subaru snarled, the words echoing through the hall. He then shrank in his seat a little, fuming as Laito grinned merrily.

Yui cleared her throat, turning to a dozing Ayato.

“Beautiful girl, I must have fallen into a dream upon sight of you, for I cannot begin to imagine such a person existing in the realm of men,” she bowed. “I will rescue you from this curse of sleep. This I promise.”

Ayato snorted, eyes remaining closed. She could practically hear his words in her head; “You look even flatter wearing that armour, pancake.”

Sending him a look, Yui focused on the task at hand when Kanato returned with a puff of fake smoke, glaring at her tearfully. She merely raised her sword.

“If you mean to pass me, worm, you’ll have to kill me!” He shrieked.

Yui wasted no time in charging forward, and a mini fight scene ensued, before Yui jabbed her sabre right into Kanato’s shoulder.

“AHHHH!” He shrieked, pressing a hand to the offended flesh and bleeding very real blood. The audience clapped right along with the vampires, looking vaguely satisfied. From the back somewhere, Shin cheered something about ‘death to all vampires!’

“I’LL KILL YOU ALL!” Kanato swore heatedly, before materialising off stage.

Yui blinked and awkwardly motioned for the fog machine to start, even though they were way off cue.

The stage was filled with a dreamy atmosphere, the smoke curling over the floor. She approached Ayato’s still body quietly, setting down her bloodied sword.

The entire audience held its breath then. The students invested in teen romance held in squeals, wondering if the couple would lip lock. The Sakamakis and Mukamis tensed.

“Ruki…shouldn’t we do something?” Azusa murmured.

“It’s up to Eve to decide now.”

“Heh, screw that,” Kou stood. “Imma stop this, she’s my Masokitty and-“

“Sit your ass back down!” Subaru snarled, grabbing him suddenly.

The two vampires started brawling in the aisles, while Yui pushed her blonde hair back from her face. She leaned over Ayato, finding that his features were inhumanly handsome for such a troublemaking, rude vampire. The position of her leaning over him,while the boy slept on- reminded her of when she’d first stepped foot in Sakamaki mansion.

So many things had happened since then. If she’d never awoken him then maybe she could have lived a normal life. Yui eased closer to him, exhaling soft breath over his pale cheek.

I can’t go back now though. I’m too different, too changed, she thought. Finally pressing her lips to his soft looking ones in a quick peck, she eased back.

Everyone was silent. Ayato did not stir.

She did it again, figuring maybe he hadn’t felt it. But nothing happened.

Yui blinked, before gritting her teeth. Oh you absolute jerk.

Grabbing the front of his dress, she yanked him up to the best of her ability and kissed him, frustrated beyond belief. Muffled laughter broke out against her lips, before Ayato yanked her closer, a tight grip around her waist that made her squeak.

The two barely noticed the loud booing coming from the majority of the vampires, or the two still fighting in the aisle. They didn’t even break apart when Kanato started going berserk backstage, the distant boom and crash of furniture hitting walls coupling with maniacal laughter.

Ayato broke away from Yui, grinning at the hazy look in her eyes. The flush of her crimson cheeks.

“Guess you’re not such a bad kisser, Prince Pancake.”

Yui smiled slightly, before Ayato was promptly knocked unconscious by a lone projectile Guava juice box.

Greetings friends. Things have been very rough for me this last 6months. I appreciate the messages and concern very much. I lost a job I loved due to cutbacks and the shock was so bad I developed a full blown panic disorder (yaaay, random panic attacks for no damn reason AND from all the usual triggers -_-) and I found out I have arthritis in my jaw which causes severe headaches and anxiety attacks. I've also developed a short term memory problem and other PCS (Post Concussion Syndrome) symptoms from a severe concussion I sustained in September of 2018. Things have been very rocky, uncomfortable, scary and downright painful for me and every aspect of my life has suffered as a result. This is all on top of my existing health and mental issues so it's been rough not going to lie, BUT I'm finally getting a handle on things and have really started to pull out of it for the better. Does this mean Ill come back to Tumblr? No, unfortunately, not at all. This site is dead to me after what happened with the NSFW ban, but I am still writing on Ao3 (Kirin_Riki) drawing and interacting with friends daily on my Instagram @kirin_riki if you want to keep in touch.

I stopped using discord and facebook largely because I don't have the emotional energy to maintain friend groups in multiple places anymore. Instagram is about the only place you'll be able to reach me outside maybe, the Berserk Amino (@Kirin_Riki). It has become my new home online, my community hub and besides posting NSFW to twitter under @kirinrikiart I don't plan on leaving. Once again ty for your support and appreciative comments even while I've been away. It still baffles me how much respect and love I've received from you all over the years and I do apologize for disappearing on the community, it was never my intent to hurt anyone's feelings or ignore anyone. Sad as it may be, I'm not an actual android overlord and have only got one very human life to live, and now more than ever, it comes first.

I wish you all a happy holiday season and please don't hesitate to contact me on Instagram, even if we've never spoken before. I am always looking to add likeminded friends to my life. What got you into Star Wars?

It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. We had Star Wars toys and products. My little brother and I used to fight with our toy lightsabers. I always remember my mom saying Chewbacca was her favorite too (it’s not her icon on Disney plus) joy

What made you a Reylo? Lightbulb moment!

I walked out of TFA HATING kylo Ren. Now, walking out of TLJ? A completely different story. The force bond moments definitely helped, but the moment that made me fall in love with Ben solo was when he chose not to kill his mom sob didn’t help that I had become a mom in that time haha

Why do you write / make art?

It’s a great way to get the creative juices flowing (hehehe). I have so many ideas to get out there! Not enough time though weary getting to write/proofread/make mood boards can really be a highlight of my day.

The Object of your Thirst…

Favorite Star Wars Movie

So wrong that I have to choose! Haha. For the original trilogy-Empire strikes back. Prequel- I like both one and three, just...not two (sorry not sorry) 😂 and for sequel- hmmm gotta give it to TLJ. The throne room scene is hands down my favorite scene from Star Wars. Just chefs kiss

What do you like to write / draw / paint the most?

As far as physical artwork, I love doing all types and mediums so I won’t get into that haha but as far as writing; definitely found I prefer to write angst as well as crack (though that never starts as my intention 😂). I also adore making mood boards, just such a good time and relaxing thing to do when I’m in the mood for it!

Your TRoS prediction

Again, don’t kill me 😬 I want the Reylo happy ending just as much as anybody, but I’m not going to be surprised if we get shafted. This trilogy has taken so much from previous ones (especially the original), I just wish they were willing to take more risks. So my fear is that they’ll go the Vader redemption route. Aka kylo dies. I will be over the moon if we get what we want (and deserve) though 🙌🏼 fingers crossed!

If you were an aesthetic... (colors, images, feels....)

Bright rainbow colors coating a dark black center 😂 I’m definitely both vibes. I love dark things and creepy aesthetics, but I also love the cute and adorable side of things too 💕🌈☠️ I’m just a black cupcake with rainbow sprinkles on top

What's your ideal environment for writing / creating?

As quiet as possible. I’m slowly realizing that my attention span and focus is easily broken. I have a very hard time writing with any little thing going on, I start to get subconsciously anxious (playing with my hair like a mad woman). Unfortunately that means in a house with a newborn, a toddler, and a husband, I don’t get nearly as much writing done as I’d like. It can honestly be heart wrenching when I so desperately want to get my creativity out but ultimate can’t

Brad Shoup: Please know that, due to my age and disorder in which everything sounds like pop-punk, I'm treating my delight in 100 gecs with extreme suspicion. The worried bruise of the original "Ringtone"'s bridge finds its double in Rico Nasty's gleefully conflicted verse. Sarah Bonito tries to sneak in a horror short, Charli chirps like a phone that's never going to voicemail. I feel like I'm listening to The Geometrid. I keep waiting for T-Pain, the human ringtone, to show up. [8]

Oliver Maier: I am slightly self-conscious about how much I like this, given that it is such blatant fan service for a) 20-somethings who frequent the main trifecta of [x]heads music subreddits b) Twitter stans who rabidly demand "COLLAB"s from their faves c) Anthony Fantano (only one of these applies to me). If the existence of this remix somehow precedes an uptick in collaborations between Extremely Online™ musicians then I can only hope that they all be so well-executed. The "Ringtone" remix is both wilder than the original and shockingly coherent, I think because all three performers tap into the most elemental versions of themselves. Charli's verse and perfect delivery of an already-great hook would be at home on the cartoonish Number 1 Angel, less so on her moodier self-titled. Sarah from KKB revisits the uncanny children's-show-presenter flow that characterised the group's breakout project and then subsequently vanished. Rico is just as berserk as one would hope. 100 gecs is objectively a very silly project, but the care with which this remix -- a clusterfuck on paper -- is structured into something both logical and extremely listenable only demonstrates how seriously Brady and Les take their tomfoolery. The gecs are among the best to emerge from the post-PC Music boom because they so firmly reject the parameters of good taste and make redundant the tiresome question of whether their intentions are cynical or sincere. You don't make pop music this brilliant and unselfconscious without pouring your heart into it. [9]

Katherine St Asaph: The other day I read a thinkpiece about, among dozens of other things, how Billie Eilish was corporate bullshit and 100 gecs were wholesome DIY outsiders, despite the gecs at that point having already signed to Mad Decent, producing tracks by the likes of Slayyyter and LIZ, and playing ukelele for an America's Got Talent winner. There is so much Discourse like this, and it all makes me so, so exhausted. What about one collection of sound waves (or Bacon-Sheeran number, or accumulated total of bar hangs with hypebeasts) makes it morally bankrupt, while a near-identical collection of sound waves remains morally acceptable? The rapping sounds like Lady Gaga's "Christmas Tree." [2]

Leah Isobel: Making actual pop music demands legibility and the sacrifice of gecs' usual chaos, but this remix manages to keep their interplay of melodic sweetness and noisy menace intact -- see Laura's charmingly polite request for Charli to sing the chorus again before the song nosedives into the "Click" outro. It's like Owl City corrupted with a virus, and it slaps. [9]

Vikram Joseph: I have some questions for the girl asking Charli to sing the chorus again, because we did *not* need that chorus again. "Ringtone" was a pleasant bit of nonsense at 2:20, but padding it out to almost four minutes with guest vocalists (of whom only Rico Nasty sounds vaguely engaged) is a good way to siphon away whatever charm it had to begin with. Sometimes... things that are expensive... are worse. [4]

Jibril Yassin: The rare example of a posse track that succeeds without removing what made the original so great. Let's put 100 gecs in charge of pop posse tracks from now till infinity. [8]

Alfred Soto: Despite the riot of credits, "Ringtone" is closer to a poor 2010 Ke$ha album track. Ringtones? A decade later? The beat sounds like the creators stole it from a Bush-era Nokia. [4]

Alex Clifton: Our featured players here are the highlight of the song, bringing liveliness to a beat that would otherwise be too glitchy for me. And yet after a while it has the same effect that a phone ringing for two minutes does: slightly annoying, loud enough that you can't ignore it, but too muffled in your bag to find where it could be. Please note my score is expressed in gecs instead of points. [5]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: It's too long and labored over, lacking the giddy charm of the original because the voices are too straightforward. It's fun seeing all these artists on the same track, but all this does is prove that 100 gecs is even more singular than we may have initially thought. [3]

Tim de Reuse: 100 gecs don't work nearly as well for me on such low energy, and their usual reckless abandon appears to have been reined in here so as to elevate the presence of their high-profile features. That, along with the nearly four-minute runtime (about twice as long as a 100 gecs track ought to be, by my measure) gives this the character of a listen-once joke. To be clear, it's a delightful joke. [6]

Ian Mathers: Absolutely better than the original (and "Money Machine" for that matter), mostly because it no longer sounds like Big Dumb Face trying to adapt to modern trends. But it does make me wonder if this is what the people who didn't like Charli's work with PC Music felt like they were hearing. [5]

Jonathan Bradley: 100 gecs let the lil homies ride on us; it's like showing up to gecsCon -- surely a real thing that could exist -- with a grocery bag full of Monster, weed and money, and discovering in astonishment that other people like this band too. (One infamous afternoon, I played 1000 gecs for my office; they were distraught, but I since found out I converted at least one co-worker.) So everyone in this PC Music Khaled lineup tries hard to do their best gecs, with Charli leaning into the lovestruck cutesiness, Sarah Bonito trying to channel the uneasy relationship with technology, and Rico summoning the unearned confidence. But although the elements that original gecs Dylan and Laura stick together sound familiar, their sound is a singular one: A.G. Cook and co. are too deliberate; Black Dresses too consumed by the horror and anxiety around them; Ayesha Erotica too singleminded; Brokencyde too scene. The best part in the remix is when Laura Les asks Charli to sing the chorus again, doing more gecs in one line than anyone else could in three verses. It turns out there's something particular to this mish-mash of pop enthusiasm, hypermodern tension, and shitposting that is not easily replicable. "You just copy everything we do," Laura once chirped, prophetically. "If I wasn't me, I'd copy me too." There's only one gec, even when there's 100 of them. [7]

Thoughts, feelings, theories and assessments (esp. the 02 kids and adventure kids’ relationships) before the premiere of the final chapter

This sort of morphed from a short thread on Twitter with some friends a while back and it was as if a lightbulb went off in my head. There might be some holes and here and there, but hear me out (It’s long. I’m so sorry. Go make tea, a snack and come back and read)

First: If you haven’t already, rewatch the first 5 movies. It’s well worth it.

This post contains spoilers for Parts 1 through 5. No spoilers from the advance screenings of Part 6 are in this post. (I’m a spoilerphobe with tri of perhaps the highest order)

So here’s a few things:

All 12 of them seeing each other at once was not a regular thing. It wasn’t in 02 for the Adventure kids, that’s for sure and each episode showed this early on.

Them not being in daily communication for days or weeks was probably normal too given how things may have become for them as Chosen. They had no reason to worry--there was peace. Everyone was busy and had their lives

Whatever the 02 kids encountered prior to Part 1, it may have occurred swiftly. In other theories I’ve tried to come up with, this is one thing I think is a strong possibility. There’s been theories floated that maybe Maki deliberately sent them there because they were the active team, but what if in an emergency with no way to directly communicate, in desperation the 02 kids were sucked into the situation out of a sense of duty and urgency?

Say in an emergency, Gennai (good) urgently tries to get a hold of the Chosen--anyone they can get--and they discover that communications have been hampered. They try and try and get a hold of the 02 kids first. Not all at once, but maybe somehow Ken, Daisuke, Iori and Miyako were able to link up. Maybe even Iori and Miyako suggested they try and get Takeru and Hikari, but they can't--time is of the essence and their help is needed post haste so they leave...and end up in an unwinnable situation.

While faced with this, the kids try to message for help as one by one--Imperialdramon, Hawkmon and Armadimon’s evolutions--are taken out, but they realize their message can't get through much like how Takeru's D-Terminal couldn't send messages in Part 4. (Maybe related: Koushiro notes he can’t get a hold of Gennai in Part 4) They're stuck with no way out nor way to call home and before they can run and seek shelter, they're all taken out (image of the final panning shot)

Due to the state of their relationship and not being in constant communication with one another, their “non-responsiveness” hasn't raised flags yet given the timeline of the films and ever-evolving and rapidly changing priorities. It could be in Part 6, albeit a bit late, they will realize they need them and *thats* when things click. I’ll concede that there is a bit of explaining to do on this point whether it’s a friendship question, or that “External Forces” (Homeostasis, the Agency, Mysterious Man, the World/Digital World) are at play.

The 02 kids are missing because of an event out of their control that we can see from the opening act of Part 1: Reunion.

What happened before that dramatic moment is where my theory comes in.

We know from Takeru in Reunion that the Digital Gate has been closed for a while and even though the Adv kids are in the Digital World right now, they got there through unconventional means which bypassed that block. Let’s assume that when the Digital Gate closed, for whatever reason, it was after a period of extended peace in the Digital World--Gennai (the real one) decided that they should let him and the Agents take care of fixing it and let them relax. After all, they had defeated BelialVandemon and Oikawa became an extra barrier for the safety of the Digital World, there wasn’t any need to be worried.

Over time, maybe during this peace, the 02 kids and Adv kids find themselves in a kind of “retirement” or hiatus from their duties as Chosen. They’re not rushing to intercept trouble or prevent anyone from taking over the Digital World or being summoned by the Sovereign Digimon to reinforce the barrier between the Worlds so they all aren’t really needed at the time.

It’s very in-character for Gennai to tell the kids to take it easy. I could see him not having any reason to be concerned. “We don’t get together as much as we used to anymore”

I strongly believe Koushiro’s line in Part 1 wasn’t just a cute reference to Our War Game--where they were hampered by the fact that they could not communicate to assemble everyone, handicapping them at the start versus Diablomon--but actually a comment on the current state of their relationship between the 12 of them.

Perhaps in a similar way to Our War Game, the 2nd original film, the kids slowly settle into “normal” routines and “normal” lifestyles as Jr and Sr High School students. Perhaps as a result of this state, the Adventure kids and 02 kids aren’t really communicating or seeing each other as much--not because they’re no longer friends, but simply because there is no reason to. They’re not having hush-hush meetings in the computer lab nor strategizing at Koushiro’s apartment over the latest Digital World developments. They drift apart somewhat, but, they’re still in touch. Life is good for all involved from 2003 onward.

Joe and Miyako being in their respective final years of High School and Jr High are likely becoming consumed by their studies (but Joe isn’t quite at the stage we see him at in Part 2) everyone is leading their own lives waiting until the day they’re called again (though not expecting). Rewatching Part 1, you can see that Taichi wasn’t terribly aware of Yamato’s band activities. It’s played as a normal conversation for laughs, but I’d say it’s another way the story demonstrates how little they hang out compared to before.

I think we can safely assume their relationship is in the state it’s in is close but not I-know-every-detail-of-your-day level. After the events of Part 2: Decision/Determination, Hikari and Takeru go and try to find out what’s going on--no one answers at the Ichijouji residence (Empty? They could be out for the day (or town) and Ken is busy himself given they may not be aware of his daily activities), Takeru fires off a text to Daisuke and presumably the others. Had things not escalated as much in Part 3, they probably would’ve had more time to sleuth around and investigate and take notice of the flags, but then the infection and Meicrackmon took priority. Had this had their undivided attention, I’m sure the story would have had them speak to the older Chosen to note they couldn’t get a hold of the other four.

(What I also find curiously interesting is that Daigo is also aware in Part 3 that the 02 kids are missing. Whatever his implication is in the events that led to their status, it’ll be interesting to learn the extent of what he knew. Given how crushed he was by the fact Maki was lying point blank to Yamato and to himself, I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if all he knew was they had lost communication with them, not that they had been ambushed)

Closed Gate = Closed Communications

We know from a few things in Part 3: Confession that, granted we are seeing a post-reboot DW, communication between the Digital World and Real World seems to be hampered as seen when Takeru tries to use his D-Terminal to message Maki but the message doesn’t go through. We could chalk this up to it being a reboot bug, but what if this “lack of reception” had been around the time when the Gates remained closed? Now wouldn’t that cause problems if any of them made it into the Digital in an emergency through unconventional means but had no ability to communicate back for help? If this had been the case, neither of them would know this was a problem. Keep this point in mind.

Something occurs suddenly in the Digital World. Maybe only the 02 kids, or only Daisuke, Iori, Miyako and Ken, are able to get to a Gate. They get there, try to get a handle on the situation they’re facing only to be up against something they couldn’t fathom even keeping at bay. Maybe the Gate was closed,(maybe those screens we see in the canyon in Part 4 were Gates that were out of service) so somehow they go in through an unconventional method, but when they get there and things escalate too quickly. Even though they may have sent messages for help...maybe they were never able to send at all.

What also occurred to me is that Meicoomon’s nature distorts with digital communications. Would its existence in the Digital World have begun a slow corrosion of digital infrastructure there? (That is: The Gate, the D3s’ Gate opening abilities, D-Terminal/Digital communication between the Real and Digital World) We can also see from Part 3 onwards that access to the Digital World is currently only being done through the distortions.

The Role of the 02 Kids in the Final Film

Difficult to pin, but I have confidence (blind?) that we are not in for a repeat of the role of the Adventure kids during the events of Movie 3 (Hurricane Touchdown), granted there are similarities to tri.: Missing kids, a tamer with the burden of caring for a Digimon partner gone berserk who harms/kidnaps one team. In fact, I truly believe that Miyako, Daisuke, Iori and Ken are key to unlocking Omegamon Merciful Mode, like how Imperialdramon Paladin Mode was unlocked by a sacrifice, of sorts, by a heavily damaged Omegamon in Movie 4, Diablomon Strikes Back. Maybe Imperialdramon FM will reappear and sacrifice part of itself to unlock Merciful Mode, then all the kids will unlock or power the new blade it wields.

I am also Team They Will Speak (or Some Will Speak) and not Team Brief Cameo. ;;;;;

Final comment -- Regarding one scene from Part 1:

This might be random but, hear me out--Much of the thinking surrounding this opening shot with Taichi is that he was maybe feeling guilty for something, but what if it was nostalgia? Koushiro did mention that they all don’t get together or talk much anymore.

What if not only that, but what of Taichi’s scene --when coupled with his vague comment to Daigo (as teacher) about going to see some friends often but not anymore--wasn’t just about the Digimon, but just...everyone? The other Adventure kids and the 02 kids included. Peacetime and an unexpectedly long one without their Digimon and without being wound up in something with his friends….what does one do but reflect on “happier” times when in times of trouble, they were with their friends almost every day?

Everyone’s going on growing up and here he is struck with a strong sense of wanting to return to the “Good ol days” with everyone, maybe. It’s probably possible he believes that going back to that would assuage his worries a little about changes..

We’ll see what happens in the final chapter of this wonderful series on Saturday!

2021

2021 did not feel like a standalone year. It felt more like an extension of 2020. The same stories, extended like a drawn-out soap opera — year two of humanity versus the pandemic. Vaccinations offered a welcome respite, but new variants attack with a vengeance. We continued to stay at home, work from home, do everything from home. This year proved that 2020 was not an anomaly, that the world will never be the same again post-pandemic.

And what a truly strange year it is. I like to say that the 2010s was the decade when video games were becoming more like real life, while the 2020s is the decade when real life becomes more like video games. We saw the rise of meme stocks and meme tokens. The traditional notion of value is turning on its head, making way for the likes of Gamestop and Shiba Inu.

Nowhere is this memeification of the world more apparent than in NFTs or non-fungible tokens. This year saw the $69 million sale of a JPEG, the emergence of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and the meteoric rise of play-to-earn NFT game Axie Infinity. We saw asset prices in this space go berserk, many by multiples of 100 or more. Like what venture capitalist Chris Dixon proclaimed, “The next big thing will start out looking like a toy.” Metaverse became the buzzword of the year, and big tech companies started rallying themselves to chase this new trend.

Why am I narrating all these as I reflect on 2021? For better or for worse, crypto took up most of my mindspace this year. I spent ungodly amounts of time checking Twitter threads, gorging podcasts, traversing Discord chatrooms, monitoring prices, bidding on overpriced JPEGs, and engaging in late-night conversations with my brother who is even more into this than I am. I suspect this ‘degen’ behavior got more common this past year because we remain cooped up in our homes, looking to make life a little more thrilling. Most of us still cannot travel to Disneyland, so we let our money take the roller coaster rides on our behalf.

At the end of the day, I surmise that we are all just finding different ways to distract ourselves from everything that is going on in the world. This is mine. You probably have yours. I did my best to progress in the ‘real’ life milestones as well, like taking up weightlifting seriously for the first time, completing an online specialization in product management, and making a career transition from finance to education.

Despite all these, I felt perpetually distracted this year, like I lost the ability to focus for more than a few minutes at a time. My brain is like a haywire web browser that keeps opening new tabs over and over, chasing after every shiny new hyperlink until the system memory cannot handle it anymore. I still did my best to complete some books this year, but the only way I could do that is through Audible. Heck, I lost count of how many times I jumped on to Twitter and Instagram while writing this piece. It is now close to midnight, so it is taking every ounce of my willpower to not succumb to the temptations of social media and see everyone’s mandatory new year posts.

The other day, I was in the middle of a stroll at East Coast Park with Hyejoo when my phone beeped with a low-battery notification. Down to 3%. I had forgotten to charge my phone that day. We were far from home and her phone battery was also dying. I knew that I had to conserve every drop of battery I had left.

Minutes later, I caught myself grabbing my phone, my fingers inching their way to refresh my Twitter feed out of impulse. The orange sky beckoned at us. It took resolve for me not to pick up my phone and take a photo. Stop, just enjoy the moment. Take it in, no need to record it.

We continued to walk, past the trees, the sea, past the running children and the old men trying to catch fish. Untethered from my phone, a strange thing happened. I started to see more and hear more. The sound of the waves crashing the rocks, the smell of grass after the rain, the December tropical breeze. Hyejoo and I just talked. We recounted the little fragile choices that led us to that moment, like her choosing to delay her study-abroad program by a year which led to us meeting in Shanghai as classmates the following year. We reminisced about how we were as kids — how she was easy to raise, how hard I was to feed when I was a kid until my mom discovered danggit in Palawan. It struck me that it had been almost two years since my last trip home — how dearly I missed seeing my family and friends in person. It was one of the most immersive conversations I remember having. No phone vibrations to puncture our moment, just us.

Somehow, everything just clicked that day. We stumbled upon a nice Thai restaurant without having to check whether it had five-star reviews on Google. We managed to find our way to the bus stop without GPS. We just surrendered ourselves to serendipity.

The bus ride back home was long. My first reaction was fear of boredeom — how was I going to stand forty-five minutes without an article to read, a podcast to listen to, a game to play, or Youtube videos to watch? Her head leaned on my shoulder as we quietly watched the city streets go by. The night lights seemed to shine a little brighter. It hit me how rare it was, moments when we are totally offline, disconnected from screens that whisk our attention away. I got to remember life before the smartphone, those times when I just allowed my mind to wander, roam free, and dream.

There is a concept in design called white space — the area between the design elements that are just blank. I used to think that white space is wasted space — wouldn’t it be better to maximize the limited space with more interesting design elements? As I understood product design more though, I found that the opposite is true. Proper use of white space is actually better design. It allows the design to breathe.

That bus ride without my phone was a white space moment for me. It made me realize that I had no obligation to fill up every empty moment with activities to fill the time, that I should also give myself permission to be bored and just surrender to the present. I aspire to have more of white space moments in 2022, to give myself more time to connect the dots and see the patterns, to deduce hints from life and figure out where it takes me next. Here’s to the end of 2020 part 2 and the start of a less distracted and more focused 2022.

[MMD Story] Iris Berserks in April Fools (Collab)

So before I share the story here, I did an April Fools joke in Pikapika-2000's Discord Server that my Dicsord account, even Youtube, Deviantart, Twitter, and Tumblr, got hacked by Iris. I uploaded the video last week of Iris taking over my channel (and my friends too), and has the courage to tell off others in Discord.

twitter & unlatch.

i guess it's time to get a gun permit & gun, then buy some bullets & shoot myself in the head.

this job robs me of all life juice, but it's the only thing i thought i was good at. & now life shows me that the branch becomes futureless.

it's all about profit & the people who suffer most under the economical cuts are the working ones. mental & physical health are affected.

the pay is lousy in comparison to what u are performing & still u try to make ends meet even tho u are running on lowest battery life.

& then the managers come to u & tell u you have to make more cuts, moremoremore, & there u are, dieing inside, cause there's no other option.

u know in other companies it's the same, there is no exception anymore, & no 1 values ur knowledge & education. all they want is low wage.

meanwhile the last 1s standing are working their asses off, loose every bit of mental stability & break down their bodies for nothin'.

& u wonder, when's ur turn, when will u be 2 expensive for them, & what are u gonna do when u are the 1 without a job. i personally never...

want 2 work in retail ever again, but it's all i know & perform well enough in. i don't have no escape plan. i can't start a new path...

2 much liabilities & commitments are on my plate. when i think of all the pressure happening in the future. i don't work well under stress.

so i guess it'd be better to just end all of this... just freedom awaits me after my death, no consciousness - a blissful thought...

i am just so tired of it all, trying to find a compromise, trying to find something i’m good at which would help me find a new job. but all i come up with is this fucking job, i don’t have any other options, except change to the same job at an equally awful company or generally the sales branch. i don’t want to serve others anymore, there’s a lack of humanity that’s increasing every year, & customers are awful, HUMANS are awful, but there’s no job in which you don’t have to deal with them.

i just want to work at a place where the work you are providing is still honoured adequately, where you don’t have to fear employee cuts & other stressors, where customers are understanding, not difficult as fuck and lashing out their own inscurities onto the ‘minor sales clerks’. i want to not be under continual stress anymore, wondering about how you will possibly manage all the work, not ever doing any breaks. wondering if you will have to do all the work all on your own soon, as your colleagues either have to go or just simply are so fed up with everything they decide to give up and move on.

i would do that, too, but i KNOW, i just KNOW, that no matter where i go, the same problem is EVERYWHERE, and it won’t get better. there’s no new blood coming, no one wants to work in an underpaid environment, where pressure’s put on you constantly, everyone wants to earn money without having to get their hands dirty & their backs strained & having to endure the constant nagging demands of customers & bosses. people want to study easy things, want to make art, want to live off of their brain content, they want to sit down & do as little as possible for a high wage.

i’m so sick of it. but i’m trapped.

i have to pay off a new fucking car ( i was almost done with my old one until it broke down ), i have to pay insurances, i have to pay food and a roof above my head, and i can’t just simply quit my job, and risk an unstable one at a different company. but i also cannot stay where i am now. i’m going to loose my mind sooner or later. and there is no way i could do something totally different, as i am a saleswoman, & only good in this profession, nothing else. i do not have a talent or special thing that could warrant to try myself out in a completely different field. i cannot afford starting a new educational path, apprenticeships don’t pay my rent & all the stuff i have to pay for. academic studies don’t pay that either.

i really am at a loss of what to do. i want to go so badly, i want to leave it behind, but i see no solution.

and then i get that sense of freedom when i think about death, and not having to worry anymore, because, duh, there are no feelings, everything is inexistent. it feels like a very appealing thought. but what kind of person am i then, especially to the people who brought me into this world, or the very few people that i call friends, even though i am a terrible one. should i leave them behind just like that? what sorrow would i bring upon them, if i killed myself.

i just know 1 thing. i feel helpless. i feel terribly alone. i have no idea anymore how to continue without losing my nerves & mind completely, while trying to complete my work with less & less support, but more requirements from ‘above’. i don’t want to end up on the street either, and who knows how long my current employer will be a pawn in the game of retail chess, until they finally tell us, hey, it’s been okay, but we are out of the game, we cannot sustain anybody anymore, buh-bye.

because it is starting. the signs are clear. people are being removed.

and above all, the hypocrisy of it all makes me want to throw up. don’t you tell people you are a company who wants to be a fair player in the corporate world, and then be unfair to your employees. don’t you DARE telling people, you want a green world, a world without deceits & more sustainability, but then go a whole different path in your company culture. fucking liars.

and i look at all companies in this country. they are all not very different from each other.

see, it is a problem for me, to ‘just go and apply for something different’. it’s a hurdle for me. because all i have to offer is the education & experience i have, but i lost all faith in the branch i work in. everything. and seeing the bigger picture, oh lord, it isn’t that far off either.

so. what am i supposed to do? give up and giving in to sweet inexistence, or fight, but still coming out incredibly bruised & battered & wary of the world, not trusting a single soul out there? what life is that, i ask you? a life in which you are made even smaller than you already are?

there’s nothing, really, there’s nothing else i can hold on to. i don’t want to underperform, it’s against my own pride & ego. but inherently, this will be what i’m going to do, because i cannot & don’t want to work myself to death. i’d rather kill myself than do this. i’ve had enough. i don’t want to show them anymore what a good worker i am. i am fed up with their nasty schemings. i am fed up with people treating you as some kind of inferior stupid sales person who has to serve them gold & silver on a plate, and if you don’t do that, you are THE persona non grata forever and always.

i am fed up with this society.

fed up with myself, as i also can’t seem to attract any blessings into my life... fed up with myself for not giving in & accepting my life as it is, being thankful for the things that i have ( which is not very much, when i think about it, even though it might be enough for others ). fed up with myself for wanting more & less at the same time, for being a ‘privileged white person’ with first world problems, that at the same time are problems i cannot find a solution for.

i want to scream. and never stop. and die while doing so. i feel like i need to go berserk, run amok, or just end my life quietly.
