#i am always on the hunt for new otome games

Random but do you play any other like dating sims? I'm getting back into Tears of Themis again after like so long and I was wondering whether Artem Wing would be your type
— 🦋
i actually tried to get into Tears of Themis! specifcally because Artem looked like You Know Who. i didn't get very far into it (gachas don't appeal to me anymore, don't ask me how much i've spent on Genshin Impact) but i was actually surprised how much i ended up like Vyn. never found out what his deal was but i love evil scientist archetypes lmao. another issue i had with the game was that Luke and Marius had absolutely no appeal to me; at least in Mysme, charas i'm not romantically inclined towards like Yoosung and Luciel still interested me because they were fun and complex characters beyond their attractiveness and "fix me" suffering. maybe it was because i never got past a certain point in the game, but those two from ToT just never grabbed my interest : \
as for any other otome games i like........
there's a promising one in development rn that i've been following since it blew up on twitter a few months ago called Touchstarved. it seems very promising and has a lot of fantasy monsters and magics and stuff, plus the art is FANTASTIC. you can actually check out their official account here @redspringstudio
another one i love of course is Ebon Light which you can download and play completely FOR FREE on itch.io, really great dark fantasy world and a slew of not!drows to romance
as for what i'm playing right now........if you're underage stop reading
rn i'm playing DoL, it's basically a porn game that includes a BUNCH of really dark topics. like, even if you don't have triggers, look up the triggers for this game, it is not for those with weak stomachs. that said, all the sex scenes aside, it does have romance interests in it you can date, a compelling plot, as well as a staggering amount of player agency to do with what you will in the town and surrounding forest/land/ocean. again, do you're research before picking this game up or you will be in for a bad time

heyaaa Tate, happy last STS of the year!! it's hard coming up with an original end-of-year ask, so I'm just gonna shoot off a bunch of questions, and you feel free to answer whichever you want/haven't already:D are you satisfied with where you're at right now in your writing journey? where do you hope to be at this time next year? do you have any Must-Accomplish 2024 writing goals? anything new you'd like to try in your writing (technique-wise, story-wise, scheduling-wise, structure-wise, etc.) next year? any stories you'd like to start? end?
Thanks Cee and HAHA I really feel that!! XD
Yeahh I'm pretty satisfied right now! Though I am slightly disappointed that I couldn't finish my first draft this year, I do feel proud that I've been able to consistently write these days. I even bought a cute calendar to make sure that I keep my daily writing habit up.
As for where I hope to be next year... Definitely has to be 1) The completion of my first round of beta reading, and 2) Have a job that I like and am doing well in. I hope to be finished with my first draft in May so if I can keep to that timeline, my first round of beta reading can hopefully start in October. Currently job hunting rn actually but Dec is kinda slow - w -
Hmmm I'd like to try writing a webnovel in my spare time cause it looks fun and it's a good place to try out all those fanfiction-ey settings & plots that don't mesh well with English novels but idk if I actually have the time for it haha. I have some plans for one but the idea I'm most fond of so far is called Don't Kill Off My Protagonist! It's about a writer in his mid-30s who died, landed up in the world of his misery porn novel, and adopted his protagonist.
I probably can't start a new WIP till I send my current main one off for querying (which is looking to be around 2025) but when I do, I definitely wanna start work on Venom in the Scriptstream. It's still in the planning phases but so far I'm thinking of an armourer who is accused of murder and has to work with the clone of his dead twin sister in order to clear his name.
Honestly I have a lot of WIPs I wanna work on but I'm... Such a slow writer 😭
So I really have to rank my WIPs in order to decide which one to start on first. Another WIP I'm really looking forward to one day writing is called Venus & Mars Have Nothing On This and it's about a guy who reincarnated into a matriarchal world. I've always been interested in a feminist version of this concept but all the ones I've read with this setting all end up being huge disappointments (I'm looking at you, The World of Otome Games is Tough For Mobs 😒). It's a very difficult kind of story to pull off well tho so I'll have to study up a lot in order to write it.

I Entered a Dangerous Dungeon
Acchans Story
Acchan’s story was very touching and sad. I thought the anime did a great job adapting her POV chapters concisely into this episode.
I love the scene of Acchan reading Past Katarina’s last text message and breaking down crying.
Tumblr media
That got me right in the feels.
One slight criticism, is that in the Light Novel we learn that because of Past Katarina, Acchan has made many friends and is able to live on without her best friend. Because of the positive impact Past Katarina had on her life and how much she changed it for the better.
So, while in the anime, Acchan does say she will live on without her best-friend, I feel like it doesn’t come across as strongly as it did in the Light Novel.
That being said. I thought Acchan’s story went really well with the flow of the episode.
In LN Vol.2 her POV honestly felt disruptive and broke the flow of the story for me. So definite kudos to the anime for fixing that.
The text message scene got me, but so did Past Katarina’s funeral.
Tumblr media
It’s easy to forget, with Katarina’s silliness, density and antics, that she died tragically young in her former life.
So well done on the anime’s part for hitting me right in the heart with that reminder.
--
Sadness and friendship aside. I like how Fortune Lover appears in Katarina’s Past Life.
Tumblr media
The poster on Acchan’s wall gives the impression that Prince Geordo and Prince Alan are the two main love interests or the more primary capture-targets.
As they are more front and center than Keith and Nicol.
But since this is Katarina’s story, Keith takes precedent over Alan because of his closer proximity and relationship to Katarina.
There’s also something I really like about Past Katarina struggling to succeed in the Prince Geordo route in the game and technically dying because of it.
It feels like her new life is good karma or the universe trying to make it up to her…so to speak
As in Katarina’s new life she easily wins over Prince Geordo without even trying and by being herself. Hell, she doesn’t even notice that he’s in love with her or that anyone else is.
I’m probably looking way more into that detail than is actually needed, but I just like that small detail to Katarina and Geordo’s relationship.
The Exam Plot
Sophia want to see Katarina after her sad dream (memories) was very sweet and touching. I just love their friendship and how it has cross time, worlds and lives. It’s beautiful.
I don’t think the Exam Plot is from the Light Novels (6-9) and it wasn’t in the manga or Light Novels (1-5).
So, kudos to the Anime for introducing this exam plot and exploring more of the academic life for Katarina and her friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved their school uniforms for the exam.
It was nice seeing them in the same outfits and they all look pretty damn good in them.
I don’t know why I really like their uniforms so much, but I really do. I just really do.
As much as I love their day-to-day outfits, I would not be mad if this was their school uniform and what we saw them in for the majority of the time.
But that’s probably just me.
Tumblr media
Katarina is 100% right about the insanity of this exam.
--
But thanks to this crazy exam we got to see more magic and it was great.
I’ve always felt like the Light Novels and the Manga didn’t elaborate or explore on this being a magical world and the fact that all of our main characters have magic (at least in the First Year/Game Arc). The later novels (3-5) do elaborate a bit further.
In Fortune Lover, it’s clear that magic was just a mechanic in the game to explain why all these characters were in the same school and a slight twist to making Maria different and special, as well as make Fortune Lover different from other Otome games.
And if I’m not mistakes Katarina even says the same thing about Fortune Lover.
Fortune Lover gave a limited view of this world. Even when it came to Maria Campbell’s life and background, but the actual Hamefura story explores the world to a much greater extent.
So, it always seemed liked a wasted opportunity not to do the same with magic.
As it never really felt that magic matters for certain characters at all.
For example in the Light Novels’ Character Profiles -- Sophia is said to have Earth magic and Raphael is said to have Light Magic…
But clearly that doesn’t really matter, because the anime (and maybe manga) can easily change their original types of magic to Wind Magic (I’m assuming it was Raphael who used that wind-tunnel to save Sophia and Katarina).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HOWEVERE, there does seem to be a mistake in Sophia’s profile as it’s just Katarina’s in regards to her likes, dislikes, etc.
Sophia’s Profile in Vol.5 (english-translation) is more than likely wrong in regards to her magic. Which might mean Raphael’s magic in his profile is also wrong.
So, we should take that into consideration.
My point being that I’m very happy that the anime is taking different route with how it handles magic in comparison to the LN/Manga.
It’s been a huge improvement.
--
Katarina is so fucking dumb (I love her).
Not only does she push the red button on the floor without even thinking about it for even a second, but in addition, her contributing to the group with her earth-bump was hilarious and adorable.
Plus, her picking the most poisonous mushrooms that ever existed was just so stupid and so amazing.
I also love how both Mary and Sophia are pretty fucking dumb when it comes to Katarina (and really only when it comes to her).
Mary is fully prepared to eat deadly mushrooms as long as Katarina is the one who prepares them and Sophia just hops right on board.
And Sophia was really the only who was genuinely complimenting Katarina for her earth-bump move in the exam. Which is just so sweet and also so dumb.
I love the three of them so goddamn much + Maria being the only one of the girls not willing to the deadly mushrooms.
While I am a bit disappointed that Katarina’s videogame knowledge wasn’t of any use to her in the exam, I did genuinely love Geordo pushing her towards the the path they decided to take.
I also enjoyed Alan saving Mary and her slighty blushing and him looking slighty embarassed as well.
Tumblr media
I will say I was disappointed that we only really saw the boys be capable during the exam, not any of the girls. Except for when Sophia helped Nicol locate Katarina…but still.
And of course, Katarina found the magic-stone because she needed a tool to help her gather mushrooms. That’s 100% Katarina. Though, a part of would have prefer it if Katarina was very knowledgable about plants in general and knew that those mushrooms were deadly. (either way it works for me)
And the one councilmember in her head (happy) seeing a lizard as food was fucking fantastic.
Tumblr media
I love the noble girls being jealous of Katarina and talking about her.
It’s nice seeing them before the big accusation scene happens. Just by showing the noble girls being mad and jealous of Katarina feels more organic to the story.
Plus, Maria noticing the Dark Magic behind Katarina.
I’m very happy with the past two ‘filler’ episodes building up to the two big climatic scenes and events.
--
The main problem I had with this episode is that -
The Exam Makes No Sense…
I know that not unusual for anime or plenty of other stories, but the exam really makes no sense.
Aside from one group, basically everyone else is basically set up to fail. Right?
If you find the magic stone than you pass. If you don’t find the (one) magic stone, then you fail.
Tumblr media
The exam isn’t really testing what they’ve learned or improved upon.
It’s more based on luck and the amount of magical power one has.
Which seems unfair, as we know that a good portion of the magic population is closer to Katarina’s level of power than Keith’s, at least in LN, but maybe it’s different in the anime (or maybe I read the LN wrong).
I guess it’s possible that even though the team that finds the magic stone automatically passes, the other teams can pass based on how they navigated through the ruins...maybe. That would make more sense.
Though, it’s very possible that Alan, Mary, and Maria didn’t pass the practical exam because they weren’t on Katarina’s team.
And while I doubt that will be addressed later in the anime - If Alan, Mary and Maria actually failed the practical exam then that would be a great reason for why they arrived late during the accusation scene.
They weren’t there because they had to retake the practical exam or do another one.
So, even if the anime doesn’t say that’s the reason, that’s going to be my headcanon for right now.
ALSO
The teachers literally split the top students of the entire grade into two separate groups…
I’m not exaggerating.
The students who get picked to be on the Student Council (the harem) are the ones who ranked the highest in the evaluation exam at the beginning of the school year.
First Year Rankings
1. Geordo Stuart (Canon) 2. Maria Campbell (Canon) 3. Alan Stuart (Canon) 4. Keith Claes (non-canon) 5. Mary Hunt (non-canon) 6. Sophia Ascart (non-canon)
We don’t actually know the rankings of Keith, Mary and Sophia but since they’re also on the student council, we know that they must be ranked 4-6. We just don’t know the exact order. .
Having the highest ranked students in two groups, basically feels like setting up all the other students for failure.
Then you have Katarina who is right smack in the middle of the rankings (#80) as part of one of the two groups.
That gives me the impression that Geordo and Keith basically demanded that Katarina be on the same team they are on, not realizing the other was doing the same.
Which is par for the course.
As all the members of the harem (minus Maria), threatened the teachers that if Katarina didn’t get permanent permission to be allowed in the Student Council chambers, then they would all resign from the student council (Manga/LN).
I know I’m thinking about this too much.
And that of course the main characters are going to be together, because they’re the main characters. But still...
Really with just one or two lines from the teacher would have at least solved one of the illogical problems here.
Teacher – “We have place several of these stones in the labyrinth, your goal is to find one of them. If your team leaves the dungeon without finding a stone, your team fails.”
Or something to that affect...
As much as I love Geordo and Keith being exasperated by Katarina and protecting her.
This also could’ve have been a nice opportunity to introduce Katarina’s non-council friends. Rather than us just seeing them right before she gets accused of bullying.
But again, it does make more sense to have the main characters to be teamed up together...because they are the main characters. I just can’t help but point out the logistical problems for this exam.
Though maybe the anime will build off what’s been established in this episode...maybe.
--
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode.
I was hit in the feels right away, laughed so hard, and it was just a lot of fun.
And of course, I was very happy to see the anime is adding its own stuff to the story and elaborating beyond the Light Novels and Manga.

Okayyyy. Seatbelt on, space cadet! I'm gonna take you on a loooong journey ✨
First of all hello again! I'm here to request for a Haikyuu romantic Haven Box if there's still a spot left. Take your time tho, I'm good at waiting 🙌🏻
here we gooo. so I'm an 159cm pansexual asian girl. I'm a little bit on the chubby side. I got long black wavy hair and I always let it down. People say I look rude and cold so they are afraid to befriend me at first (some even hate me for no reason.) I mean its not my fault that I borned with this resting bih face 😭💔 I love wearing dark colored clothes, high waisted jeans and Sneakers.
I do wear makeup, and my favorite lipstick color is red. Like a really bold red. That's like my trademark.
for personality, I'm an enfp, taurus, gryffindor (big yikes!); I think I'm a pretty openminded person. I'm not afraid to speak up and I will fight (both using words and fists) for what I believe in. People see me as someone confident and to look up to; Tho honestly I'm pretty insecure with myself. Like I find nothing good about me and got depressed easily. Its like I have this happy clown persona everytime I'm outside my house and once I go back to my bedroom by myself its all the sad clown hours haha. ooh- this is getting kinda heavy. 😵 But anyway I care about my family and friends a lot. Their happiness is actually more important than my own. So I'd do anything to help and protect all of them.
My hobbies are sleeping, singing and watching horror movies/true crime documentaries; and yes I got scared after watching those stuff so I ended up searching for some broadway musical 😂😂 I also love to play games; otome games, cause my love life sucks *coughs*
Some facts about me!!
I believe in soulmate. Just the thought that we all have someone created specifically for us is making me happy 🥺❤
I'm a touch starved person. So I like doing skinship and PDA. I just love being spoiled and showered with love I guess 👉🏻👈🏻
I hate spicy foods, cause it really burns my throat. and I also hate lizards. They are gross and weird 😭😭
I believe ghosts are real and I'd definitely want to speak to them someday. Just asking them how does it feel to be a ghost? Is there a way to help em stop being a ghost? (Only with the nice ghost of course) 👻💕
My favorite song is Helpless by Phillipa Soo and if that doesn't show how much of a Hopeless romantic I am then idk 😂😂
I love watching tarot cards reading.
I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers trope and I can't stop this addiction. Like aaaaa its cliche but I love em so much ashdjflgl
Okay thats it! I need to stop talking before my ask give you some real headache 😂 I wish all this information helps you write a little bit and not bother you in one way or another!! Have a great day and stay healthy in this pandemic situation 🙌🏻✨ see yaaaaa~☆

───✱*.。:。✱*.:。✧*.。✰*.:。✧*.。:。*.。✱ ───
No matter what
Oikawa Tooru is the grand king of Seijoh. He was handsome, smart, and all that. He was very athletic and observant. He gets along with everyone and anyone. He could get any girl to swoon to him but he is only loyal to volleyball and Iwaizumi. And that’s what people thought, but this king has fallen off his throne. He, has fallen in love and doesn’t know what to do. It started with the little things like seeing how she loves skinship or how she hates spicy food. He thought it was normal, he was observant after all. But as time passes, he realized that he might be falling. He tried and tried to avoid it, knowing that it might just hurt him in the end anyway. He knew that he wasn’t going to be able to fulfil what was in her heart because he would always choose volleyball. Oikawa had a girlfriend once, she left him because he wasn’t good enough, and he didn’t give her enough of his time.
Oikawa did not want that to happen again. He didn’t want his heart torn into pieces yet again. But still, he fell deep into the rabbit hole called love. And he hated her for it, becoming her enemy for no reason at all. But, fate seemed to be in his side. Soon enough the “mortal nemesis” relationship faded away and love soon blossomed. It wasn’t as smooth as most people would say but it’s still a beautiful sight to behold. The way Oikawa looks at her with so much love and passion, it’s breathtaking. The way that she would cheer for him no matter what, it’s alluring. A love so pure that it seems surreal and impossible. From then on, the great king knew that she was thee one. He knew that even if he was too busy, she would understand. He knew that she would always be by his side no matter what the cost is.
And he knew that no matter what happens, he would always love her. Volleyball may be his priority, but he will soon get out of it. Slowly but surely, the walls he built was crumbling away. Slowly but surely, his distant exterior grows into an attached and close koala. Oikawa’s train of thought was then shattered as he heard someone calling out to him. “Oi Shittykawa, why the hell is your face like that?” Iwaizumi said as he cringed at the sight. “Geez Iwa-chan, can’t a guy think about his soulmate in peace?” He then responded as he glared at the shorter male. “We have a game to play, Stupidkawa. And if you miss her so bad, why don’t you go to her at the stands and talk to her?” Iwaizumi said as he glared intently at his best friend. “I have a better idea,” Oikawa said as he stood up. His eyes wandered around the bleachers to find his one and only. And soon enough, he was able to see her long black wavy hair and her beautiful eyes. “Princess!” He yelled.
The female then smiled and waved at the player adorning the cyan colors with the number one. “Yes, my prince?” She yelled back. “Oh! My darling Princess! I love you with all my heart and know that no matter what, I’ll still be in love with you,” He yelled. The stadium awed at the interaction. Oikawa now found his one and only, his soulmate. And he would never let go, no matter what.

Author's note
Hello there! I'm so sorry for doing this quite late. Since exams and school and all that.
I hope you enjoy this matchup nonetheless! And I also made sure that the drabble was a bit different and unique to make up for it. Since I decided to try out a new way of writing.

Interesting Dreams
I really think I have an issue with otome games- Ikemen in particular. Like, I had the weirdest dream last night, and I mostly blame otome games. It was one of those dreams that are dramatic and feel like your watching a movie, but they also are so fucking random and are jumping all over the place- at one point there was a boy dressed in a cape and I called him out for being suss and he said in a fake posh British accent, whilst swooshing his cape mind you,
“I’m sorry, you see, I have stage 4 ADHD.” And I was just so confused, I was like,
“Did you just compare your ADHD to cancer?”
The main part of my dream is why I’m here today to tell you this fanciful story.
Basically, I was some beautiful vampiric woman with a dramatic backstory. I don’t remember everything, but I was living in a mansion with some other people, and I had been turned into a vampire. What does that sound like, hmm? Unfortunately, the people I was living with were not great historical figures, or even vampires, we were just all misfits with no where to go, living together in this large creepy mansion in the middle of nowhere. And when I say creepy, I mean this place was like something out of Scooby Doo. Dark, gloomy, and it even had a freaking cemetery in the back. In my tragic back story, I was married to some noble or something. I remember that our clothes looked fancy and that we were probably rich, and it was like late 1700′s early 1800′s or so. We had a son who was maybe about 6 or 7, and in the beginning I had thought that both of them were murdered and I was left alive, and afterwards was turned to a vampire for some reason, I don’t know. The thing with being turned into a vampire though was that it came with a curse of sorts. Once turned into a vampire, no one could recognize you, or at least, wasn’t supposed to. I guess that’s a pretty good defense after turning, so you couldn’t be caught, but I don’t know. So, my husband shows up, and it’s like present time at this point, and for some reason I can recognize him, but he can’t recognize me. I’m freaking out, cause one, he’s supposed to be dead, two, I know that it’s him and I’m not supposed to, and three he believes I’m the reason our son died and he recently received news that I’m alive and has been hunting me down to kill me. Now, he has suspicions that I am in fact me, and his time at the manor is spent trying to prove that I am me and wanting to kill me. I don’t know why, but at one point I find myself in the cemetery out back being followed by my husband and the two men he’s traveling with. I’m surrounded by gravestones and its foggy as fuck, and I remember looking back and seeing them. With some quick thinking, I use magic of some sorts and change the name on a random gravestone to my name, which, btw, isn’t my real full name. It’s my real first name, Jenna, with the last name Clemence. Shocker. Though, the man that’s my husband is neither Luka, nor Jonah. I don’t remember my dream ever giving him a first name, but he didn’t look anything like Jonah or Luka. If anything he looked like a mixture of Zen from Mystic Messenger, and Prussia from Hetalia. He had long white hair that was put back in a low ponytail, and it had one of those bows in it you see in men from like the 1700′s. But, after he was turned into a vampire, his hair changed into a dark maroon color and his bangs were a bit more perfect and nice if that makes sense. So, I put my name on this gravestone, and he comes over to me and I point it out to him. I’m like,
“Oh, I know I have the same first name as your late wife, but look! This appears to be her gravesite! It would seem she has passed after all!” And he’s like super suspicious of me, but he can’t out right prove that I’m his wife, and so he chooses to drop it. Weirdly enough, this is where my dream kind of jumps, because it goes from us being in the cemetery, to me and two other guys from the manor searching the house in which my husband and son had ‘died’ to find out how my husband survived and how he was turned, but that’s where it stops. I remember bits and pieces of the house, that it was really weird and falling apart. Thinking about that house actually gives me weird vibes, I don’t know why. Like just imagining myself being there is creepy I guess. Anyway, my dream jumps from that act to another with an entirely different plot. We’re in the same mansion, but for some reason I’m now an Inhuman with electricity powers, and I’m apart of the Avengers . . . I did binge watch the new Avengers game, so that could be why-
But we’re stuck in the mansion, and for some reason can’t get out. Like it’s not explained or mentioned, I just know that we’re stuck and can’t even set foot outside the mansion. Tony Stark’s arc reactor in his chest starts to malfunction, and the only way to keep it going is to take it out and for me to ‘charge’ it with my powers by putting it in my mouth . . . But not just in my mouth, no, it has to be touching my teeth- I don’t know why, and I never claimed that my dreams make sense- but holding it in my teeth hurts like a bitch, and I remember actually feeling the vibrations in my teeth and how badly it hurt. Like, I find it insane that my dream was so vivid that I can still remember the exact pain I was feeling in my teeth. (Low key, I think this might prove my suspicion that I’m grinding my teeth in my sleep, but I digress) It was really weird. But, to remedy this, Tony creates this blue jelly like stuff to put over my teeth, kind of like a whitening strip, that puts a buffer between my teeth and the vibrations and it stops the pain. A couple of times during this act of my dream, I had to fight things- they were like entities that were in this mansion, and again, while it was never specifically mentioned, I knew in my dream that these things where what was keeping us stuck in there, and that we were trying to hide from them. Kind of like Hetaoni if your apart of the Hetalia fandom. If not, it’s a game (Based on another game) featuring the characters from the anime Hetalia that get stuck in a mansion and can’t leave due to an entity messing with time and keeping them stuck there. And while the mansion gave me weird, creepy vibes, nothing about time was ever mentioned, and the only thing I remember about fighting them was that I was drooling a lot because of the stupid blue shit I had to keep on my teeth and the constant vibrations from charging. My dream had briefly jumped from that to another act where we were still in the mansion, but this time I was a doctor. My doctor name wasn’t my real name, I can only remember that it was long and started with a D. And I literally remember nothing of that part of the dream, but I remember I was a doctor, because at one point I had actually woken up in real life to move, and I heard a voice from behind me whisper ‘Dr. ______’ whatever my name was, and I remember thinking to myself,
“Oh shit, something just said my name. That was creepy, but I’m going to choose to ignore it and go back to sleep.” And after that, I remember nothing. Do I think there was some being whispering in my ear? No, obviously not. What it probably was, was that even though I was awake and had opened my eyes for a couple of seconds, I wasn’t fully awake and was still kind of dreaming. I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but sometimes when I’m falling asleep and I’m in that space where I’m not awake, but I’m still aware of my surroundings and I’m not fully asleep, sometimes I’ll start to hear voices and noises. I’ve always just kind of explained this to myself as my dreams starting to form, but I don’t know if that’s really what it is. What I’m trying to say is that this is what I think the voice was. It was a really freaky dream, and I just find it odd that no matter how much my dream changed it’s story line, it all revolved around that one mansion-

Happy Valentine’s Day. I’m a terrible person, I hope you enjoy.
Words: 2531
CAUTION! Diabolik Lovers is a dark otome game with mature themes.  This was also the hardest and darkest piece I’ve had to write so far, so there’s that.  This is also SMUT so proceed with caution.
As a child, Alrick always thought his father knew a little something about everything. He could charm ballrooms of nobles with knowledge of the most familiar and unfamiliar subjects, ranging from sewing to dragon taming. His father could cast the most powerful banishing spell he had ever seen, as well as make an expert quiche. Nowhere was his knowledge more extensive than when it came to feeding.
Beginning in his preteen years, Alrick’s father would encourage his son to accompany him on pilgrimages to the human world to feast upon souls. “There are a number of advantages we have over the humans,” Alrick’s father explained after one particularly fruitful hunt.  “Humans are weak-willed, and are creatures of immense want.”
Burai elaborated further.  “Money, power, desire.  These all have tremendous sway over their fragile will.  As an adult demon, you’ll have to use these things to persuade the humans to give themselves to you.  You must use all you have when hunting humans.  When you are a man, you’ll understand how something as simple as bodily pleasure can have a tremendous effect.”
Alrick, of course, couldn’t wait to start feeding on his own.  He hated having to drink from the disposable human maids or accompany his father on hunts.  The scraps his father left him were nothing compared to the hunger.  He wanted to be alone, to finally eat and eat until the gnawing ache inside of him was quiet.  But Burai refused, claiming that Alrick was far too young and inexperienced to go alone.
It was this thought that weighed heavily on his mind the evening Alrick’s father called for him to join him in the dining room.  This wasn’t uncommon, but Alrick still dressed in some of his finest clothes to meet him.  He passed her room on the way down.  He could smell her sweet scent lingering in the hallway just outside her door, and if he listened hard enough he could hear her heartbeat just beyond it. It was early, she was probably still asleep.  Alrick remembered she liked to sleep curled up with her blankets pulled tightly around her.
He turned away from the door and walked briskly downstairs.  It wasn’t good to think of her, especially when his father wanted him.  Besides, he reminded himself, humans aren’t worth thinking about anyways.
The newest maid held open the door to the dining room, a faint yellow bruise lingering on her throat.  Alrick smirked when he saw it, he knew it was his fangs that marked her.  She tasted fairly sweet, and was complacent when he bit her.  Her cries always turned to soft moans under the guise of his mouth, something that pleased Alrick.  When his father inevitably replaced her after her mind and body could bear no more, he would have to train a new maid to turn pain into pleasure and drink from her all over again.  But he was getting good at that.
Burai sat at the head of the table, his long purple hair elegantly tied into a ponytail that rested on his shoulder.  Alrick bowed low before his father, careful to avoid meeting his eyes.  Burai regarded his son impassively, his red eyes clouded by what appeared to be apprehension.
“Sit,” his father commanded, gesturing to a nearby chair.
Alrick sat.  “What do you wish of me today, Father?”
Burai considered his son carefully.  “My boy,” he began, “over these past few years I’ve been guiding you on proper feeding techniques, waiting for the day you would be old enough to eat on your own without causing an incident.”
Alrick’s heart leaped in his chest.  “D-do you think I am ready, Father?”
Burai leaned forwards in his chair.  “Almost.  There is one more test I would like you to complete.  Then you’ll be a man, and ready to face your hunger alone.  Are you prepared for it?”
Alrick was practically bouncing in his chair.  “Yes, Father.  Whatever it is, I can do it.”
Burai sat back and grinned.  “Very good, a king never backs down from a challenge.  You’ll find her waiting in the room down the hall, to the left.”
Alrick froze.  “Her…?”  Did his father want him to eat a human unsupervised?  If so, he hoped it would be the maid.  He wanted his face to be the last thing she ever saw, and the taste of her soul to be the first full one on his lips.
“Yes, her.  Don’t eat this one, I have to pay her at the end of the night.  But it will be enough to keep her quiet.”
Alrick stared at his father.  “Forgive me, sir, but I don’t understand.  How is seeing some strange woman supposed to help me learn how to feed…?”
Burai sighed in irritation.  “Have you really not been listening to any of my past lessons?  What can we offer humans to trade for their souls?”
“Power, money,” he listed them off, “and...pleasure.”  A look of realization spread across Alrick’s face as he understood.
His father nodded.  “Exactly.  Once you’ve controlled the pleasures of the flesh, then you’ll be man enough to provide for yourself.”
Alrick nodded wordlessly.  A bubble of nerves rose up from his stomach.
“I’ve only booked her for a few hours, so be quick about it,” his father said, rising from the table.  “I’ll be in my office when you’ve finished.  If you somehow manage not to fail, we can go out hunting tonight.”
Alrick ignored the pang in his chest and nodded again, “Yes, Father,”
“Good,” Burai said, dismissively.  He walked out of the dining room without another word, the door closing softly behind him.
Alrick sat at the table in silence. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead. It’s fine, he reasoned with himself,  just think of it as an advanced form of biting. But the cold feeling remained.
He rose wordlessly and walked down the hallway.  The dark, towering walls of the manor seemed to close in on him, their weight settling upon his chest.  Alrick paused outside of the room at the end of the hall.  He pressed his ear against the door and heard light breathing coming from inside.  He could hear someone’s heart beating, but he wasn’t sure if it was the woman’s or the usually faint beating in his own chest.  Alrick’s hand shook as he pushed the door open.
The woman was sitting down in a chair near the window, looking out onto the courtyard.  She stood at his arrival, her eyes lowered to the floor.  “Good evening, sir,” she said softly.
“G-good evening,” Alrick said stiffly.  He closed the door behind him with a click.  She was dressed more modestly that he would have expected of a prostitute.  Her dress could have passed as one belonging to a proper lady.  Her dark hair was drawn back from her face, pinned in soft curls.  She looked surprisingly normal.
“I’ll take your coat, sir,” she said.  Alrick slipped it off with numb fingers, handing it to her wordlessly.  She had a slight accent, her voice bouncing and lilting from one word to the next.  It reminded him of her accent when she first came to the manor, how “I’ll” turned to “oil”.  It took months for his father to get her to lose it, and even now Alrick could sometimes hear the ghost of it when she was nervous.
He shook his head.  He wouldn’t  think of her now, he had a job to do.  The woman had folded his coat over her arm and set it down on the nearby table.  The woman stepped back and reached behind, beginning to undo the laces of her corset.
“Wait, stop,” he said, throwing his hand out.
The woman looked at him.  “Would you like to do it?”
“No.  Wait, yes.  Wait, no.  I-I don’t know,” he stammered, heat coloring his cheeks.  Alrick walked over and sank down onto the bed, feeling clammy. “Please forgive my behavior,” he said, attempting to regain his composure. “I’ve never done this before.”
The woman sat beside him.  “Would you like for me to guide you, sir?”
Alrick felt sick. He hated asking for help, but he felt as if he had no other choice. He nodded weakly.  “Will you tell me your name?”
The woman smoothed the folds of her dress. “Chastity. You may call me Chastity.”
Alrick choked on his laugh.  A prostitute named Chastity, what a joke.  His father must have had a good laugh when he chose her.  “Hello, Chastity,” he managed.  “I’m Alrick.”
“Hello, sir,” Chastity smiled politely.  She gently reached for his hand and held it between her own.  “You're very cold,” she said, trying to massage warmth back into his fingers.  “Shall I light a fire before we begin?”
Alrick shook his head wordlessly.  He didn’t need heat adding to the sweat pooling under his shirt.
Chastity looked at him, pity softening the edge of her eyes.  “We’ll go slow,” she said softly, moving her hands up his arm.
Anger flared up inside Alrick.  He was the prince, he didn’t need pity from a whore.  But the feeling died as Chastity moved closer, placing her hand on his cheek.  She pulled his face down to hers, her breath tickling his skin.  Chastity leaned forward just enough to brush her lips against his, a caress more than a kiss.
Alrick never imagined his first kiss to be with a stranger.
He cupped her face with his other hand, trying to move his lips along to hers.  His inexperience must not have been as painfully evident as he felt it was, for she didn’t pull away and burst into laughter.  Instead, Chastity took his hand and placed it on her waist.  She kissed him more forcefully, her lips moving his apart with ease.
Heat rose inside of Alrick.  She traced his lips lightly, causing him to gasp.  Chastity kissed him deeper, using her tongue and hands to make his head swirl.  Alrick slid his hand in her hair, wanting her to kiss him more.  Chastity pushed up his shirt, her fingers soft but urgent.  He began pulling at her corset strings, fumbling with the knots in the laces.  Sensing what she wanted, Chastity moved her hands behind and removed it with ease, letting it fall to the floor.
Alrick undressed her with fervor, his hands eagerly feeling for her soft skin.  He marveled at how warm she felt.  He wanted to bury himself in that warmth.
After a few moments of rustling cloth, she lay beneath him.  His shirt hung off him, the buttons undone.  It was the only thing between them, his last refuge. Chastity knotted her fingers in the fabric, giving it a light pull.  “Leave it,” he rasped, pushing her hand away.  She settled for putting her hands on his hips, pulling him towards her.  Alrick had the sense her impatience was less out of want for him, but because their time was nearing a close.  His heart pounded in his chest, but he couldn’t tell if it was from lust or fear.  He squeezed his eyes shut and slid inside her.
Her arms wrapped around him, guiding his thrusts into her.  He felt completely wrapped up in her warmth, surrounded by her scent and softness.  His hips moved to an unconscious rhythm, eliciting soft moans and gasps from her.  Alrick clung to Chastity’s shoulders, burying himself deeper and deeper within her.  A deep ache began in his lower stomach and spread to his chest, his body feeling warmer.
He moved faster, his breath coming out in groans and gasps.  Hers, however, did not change.  She let out a low moan that didn’t match the expression on her face.  He thrust harder and got the same lackluster response.  She was faking her pleasure.
Alrick growled low in his throat.  He would bring this woman pleasure, no matter what it took.  He buried his face into the soft skin of her neck with a growl and sank his fangs into her.
Chastity gasped and arched off the bed, digging her nails into his back.  He drank from her greedily, the pleasure from her blood and body  mixing inside him. He wanted more, he needed more.  She moaned loud beneath him, her body tightening.
He bit into her shoulder, sucking hard.  She tasted so sweet, and her sweetness seemed to grow by the second.  Her arms slid from his shoulders, but Alrick kept going, chasing the sweet release he felt grow within him.  With a groan the pleasure inside him burst, and he collapsed on top of her, his heart racing.
Alrick lay like that for several seconds, his heart pounding in his chest.  He could see how physical pleasure was a powerful thing, he had never felt more aware of his body in his life.  Every nerve ending seemed to be crackling with electricity.  He rolled off of her onto his back, his chest heaving.  He wanted to do it again.
He sat up slowly, a lazy grin spread across his features. Alrick reached for her arm and pulled her close.  She was colder than he expected, it must have been a side effect of the sex and feeding.  “Chastity,” he said, leaning over her, “do we have time to-”
He stopped.  Her eyes were frozen open, glassy and empty.  Her once warm skin was cold, and hardening.  Her chest was still, quiet.  She was dead.
He stared at her in quiet horror, ice filling his veins.  “No,” he whispered to himself.  “No, no, no, Chastity, please,” he said, giving her a shake.  “Please wake up!  No, no, I can’t have failed this, I can’t,” his voice broke.
Alrick curled up on the bed, burying his face in his knees.  “No,” he whispered to himself,” no…”  He’d never lost control of himself like that before.  He never meant to kill her, only give her some of the pleasure she was giving him.  And now she lay dead and empty beside him, a physical reminder of his failure.
His first kiss.  Hs first lover.  And his first kill, all in one night.
He got up and put his clothes back on without a sound, ignoring the blood that now stained his shirt.  Alrick’s hands felt numb and he rebuttoned the fastenings of his coat.  He dragged a shaking hand through his hair and looked back at her body.  He wondered if he should cover her, or would it be seen as more proof of his shame.
He left the room just as he entered it, covered in cold sweat.  The ritual was supposed to make him a man, yet Alrick felt just as sick and terrified as he had when he met Lilly for the first time as a child.  With each step he took towards his father’s study, silently hoping that he would be merciful and dispose of the body quickly, he felt like he was leaving a piece of himself behind.
His father said that mastering bodily pleasure was necessary to becoming a man.  But, as Alrick placed his hand on the door to his father’s study, he couldn't help but feel he knew nothing at all.

Manga the Week of 2/17/21
SEAN: Valentine Week is here! Looking for some sweet romance? Or bitter breakups? Manga is here for you.
As are light novels. Airship debuts Ride Your Wave (Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara), based on the anime film from the Eizouken director. It will likely be happy yet also sad.
ASH: I enjoy Masaaki Yuasa’s anime, but haven’t actually watched Ride Your Wave yet. Even so, I’m curious about the novelization.
MELINDA: I have watched it, and I’m absolutely interested in a novelization!
SEAN: Airship also has the print debut of Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs.
And they have How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom 10, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear 4 (print) and 5 (digital), Restaurant to Another World 5, and The Saint’s Magic Power Is Omnipotent 2.
Dark Horse has the 2nd Blade of the Immortal Deluxe Edition.
ASH: I was surprised to find the Blade of the Immortal deluxe edition was ever so slightly smaller than the Berserk deluxe edition, but they are still impressive tomes.
SEAN: J-Novel Club has two digital debuts. The first we’ve seen the manga of already: The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto), the story of a young woman sold to the Emperor’s Palace, and full of politics and intrigue.
ASH: I’m glad to see The Apothecary Diaries being translated.
SEAN: The other is The Magician Who Rose from Failure (Shikkaku Kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madō Shidō! ~ Jumon Kaihatsu Tokidoki Senki ~), which features a seeming failure who turns out to be brilliant after remembering his former life. The premise made me sigh, but I enjoyed this author’s The Magic in This Other World Is Too Far Behind!!, so will give this a shot.
Also from J-Novel Club: Full Metal Panic! 10 and I’ll Never Set Foot in That House Again! 2.
Kodansha has two print debuts, one of which we’ve seen digitally. Star⇄Crossed!! (Oshi ga Watashi de Watashi ga Oshi de) is the new series from the Kiss Him, Not Me creator, and is a soul-swapping comedy. It runs in Betsufure.
MICHELLE: I am finally gonna check this out.
ASH: Same!
MELINDA: Sounds interesting!
ANNA: Me too!
SEAN: The other debut is Those Not-So-Sweet Boys (Amakunai Karera no Nichijo wa), the latest Yoko Nogiri series. A hardworking young girl has to reform a group of seeming bad boys. This runs in Dessert.
MICHELLE: I really like Yoko Nogiri’s style, and will probably like this one, too.
ANNA: I am intrigued.
SEAN: Also in print: Cardcaptor Sakura Collector’s Edition 7, Chobits 20th Anniversary Edition 3, and Sayonara Football 3 (which is a rebranded version of Farewell, My Dear Cramer 1 – The title will be Sayonara Football going forward).
MICHELLE: Meanwhile, they’re still calling the digital version Farewell, My Dear Cramer? That’s nice and confusing.
ASH: I was wondering what was going on with that.
SEAN: Digitally the debut is A Girl & Her Guard Dog (Ojou to Banken-kun), the story of a yakuza daughter trying to have a normal school life… and her guardian, who is not about to let her fall in love. This runs in Betsufure.
MICHELLE: This potentially could be fun.
ANNA: A lot of this sounds great, but given the stacks of unread manga in my house will I actually get around to reading digital shoujo? Probably not.
SEAN: Also digital: The 11th and final volume of Dolly Kill Kill, Fairy Tail: Happy’s Heroic Adventure 8 (also a final volume), GE: Good Ending 14, I Guess I Became the Mother of the Great Demon King’s 10 Children in Another World 3, Lovesick Ellie 12 (also a final volume), Shojo FIGHT! 15, We’re New at This 3, and Will It Be the World or Her? 2.
MICHELLE: I have really enjoyed Lovesick Ellie and though I’m sad to see it end, better now than before it drags on too long.
SEAN: One Peace gives us My Pointless Struggle (Waruagaki), a done-in-one title which is… biography? Sports? I’m not really sure, but it looks manly.
ASH: That it does!
SEAN: From Seven Seas, we get Cube Arts 3 (the final volume), Dragon Goes House-Hunting 6, Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka 10, Mushoku Tensei 12, My Senpai Is Annoying 4, and The Sorcerer King of Destruction and the Golem of the Barbarian Queen 2 (also a final volume).
Square Enix has the 3rd Perfect Edition of Soul Eater.
Vertical debuts Haru’s Curse (Haru no Noroi), a josei title about a woman grieving for the death of her little sister from cancer. It’s a Zero-Sum title, and looks heavy but good.
MICHELLE: Looking forward to this one.
MELINDA: I am too.
ANNA: I’m always up for more josei, but maybe not heavy titles right now.
SEAN: Vertical also has The Daily Lives of High School Boys 4.
Viz debuts Assassin’s Creed: Legend of Shao Jun, which runs in Shogakukan’s Sunday GX. It follows the protagonist of the Assassin’s Creed: China game.
ASH: It’s interesting when franchises get split up between publishers like this. If you’re looking for other Assassin’s Creed manga, you have to look to Titan Comics.
SEAN: Going from A to Z, Viz also has Zom 100 – Bucket List of the Dead (Zom 100 – Zombie ni Naru Made ni Shitai 100 no Koto), also from Sunday GX. A corporate drone is exhausted and depressed. Then one day, he wakes up to a zombie apocalypse. His thoughts? “AWESOME!” This has some good buzz.
Also from Viz: Blue Flag 6, Golden Kamuy 20, Mermaid Saga Collector’s Edition 2, and Urusei Yatsura omnibus 9.
MICHELLE: Yay, Blue Flag!
ANNA: Yes!
ASH: Indeed! And yay to the second half of Mermaid Saga!
SEAN: Lastly, from Yen On, we get Solo Leveling. It’s a weak-to-strong dungeon crawl sort of book, which runs on the common trope these days of being able to see your stats like a game. It’s Korean, I believe, not Japanese.
Any of these pierce your heart with a shot of love?

Why People Play Games
There are many reasons why people play games and here I am, sharing my own opinion on why people play games. Do take notes that these are just my personal opinions. If you are interested in the facts, please click on the links to read the full articles.
Premise 1: People will always yearn for sense of belonging
We as humans are social creature by nature, having needs of the feeling need to belong, this is actually how we as human able to survive till now. The 1998 book, Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom, written by William Glasser - an American psychiatrist, one of the choice theory states that:
We are driven by five genetic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun. - William Glasser
Reference: http://www.wglasser.com/the-glasser-approach/choice-theory
As we wake up every morning, we din’t say such things like “Let’s achieve love and belonging today!”. Instead, we say something like “I wonder is Cherry up? Maybe I should give her call for having lunch together.” and “Let’s hit the bazaar with my classmates.” We do such things is because we need relationships, social connections, to give and receive affection and to feel part of a group.
Another theory proposed by Abraham Maslow on 1943, from paper "A Theory of Human Motivation" Psychological Review, he mentioned that after physiological needs like sleep food and safety needs, need of belonging are ranked third on his hierarchy. Because as humans, we need to belong. To one another, to our friends and families, to our culture and country, to our world.
Reference: https://www.learning-theories.com/maslows-hierarchy-of-needs.html
When does humans starts showing the sign of need of belonging? Well, the answer would be ever since human begin to exist. Because of this, mankind was able to survive until now. From hunting food to delegating community jobs, building shelters to helping each other, sense of belonging was showed in these actions to ensure the survival.
If you think from development perspective, ever since infanthood we have already show the sign of the importance of belonging. When we are all babies, we rely on our parents to give us food, shelter and love so we can grow healthily. Throughout these actions it has giving us as the babies some instinct of belonging to our parents and unconsciously our parents will also looking out of us. Spending times together makes “being together” feels good and it triggered the feeling of happiness and love which we seek out in life by finding friends and partner, build a family and also joining the community.
But why do we do all these? Mainly it was because being needed by someone will give more meaning to our life and increase our desire of surviving. Besides, belonging to a or multiple groups will be able to boost our self esteem. Especially when the group is going well, it will generate feelings of being love, needed and wanted which will makes us feel valuable and treasured by being in the group.
A positive self image and healthy self esteem is based on approval, acceptance and recognition from others; - Abraham Maslow
Besides, being in groups also give us a sense of identity. Example when people ask me, who am I. I will answer them, “I am a student” or “I am a Chinese” and so on. It can be related to religion, race, profession and much more.

Premise 2: Games provide player with sense of belonging
You must be thinking that I am joking about this, but no. By playing games was able to deliver the feeling of belonging but how you asked, following are the examples.
For online games, most of them are always required to play with another human player and some required a number of players to team up in order to complete the task. So, players will always need to form a semi-permanent team or permanent team in order to play some certain games or they can just join guild, where is a place where players gathered.
While playing the game and communicating with the other players, they were able to develop close relationship. As a team or guild member, players can be very highly supportive when they get to know each other overtime, which will increase the experience of feeling belong, valued and needed as a member.
Now, online games are not just that, many online game has become the back bone of eSports world. Fans buy tickets to watch their favorite players play live in front of them and cheer to support them, cosplayers put on their favorite character’s costume and gather together and let the photographer take photos of them.
For brands and fans, eSports offers something that most traditional sports cannot—nearly unprecedented access to star players. This mostly occurs online, where players routinely interact with fans via social media or with YouTube videos. - E.J. Schultz
The sense of belonging and feeling needed are very strong when it on eSports event and people cannot stop loving it.
Meanwhile in Japan, Romance Simulation Games a.k.a. Otome Games are really popular among the ladies, especially with married ladies. In Otome games,  the usual objective is to fall in love. Player can have multiple boyfriends at one time and decide on the interaction with boyfriends that decided the fate of the game.
One of the many reasons on why this genre of games are so popular are Japanese ladies are being afraid of having judge by the society because of having an affair, so by playing Otome games that offer virtual relationship will be able to fulfill the need of belonging to the ladies.
Each character have their own story which give them some depth. So some people can find a character more attractive than real man. -Ai Aizawa
The first simulation game that focus romance was appeared on 1994, it was called “Angelique” by Koei Co. and made for Super Nintendo. After that, successor games such as Messiah’s “The Maiden of Albarea” launched in 1997 and E3 Staff’s “Graduation M” in 1998 further diversified the genre by adding in elements of fantasy, history, and adventure. Otome games are so popular nowadays, produced on most gaming system like Playstation, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS VITA and smart phones. This market makes $135 million per year and with the popularity of Otome games raising, Japanese game retailer even designate a shelf purely for “games targeted at women”.
