Default manage folders for picasa 3.9 install#
And if you install the latest version of Picasa (3.9) under WINE ( instructions), a problem occurs when bringing all the photos into Picasa. It works as described with Picasa, but it is old. If you install the last version of Picasa made for Linux, it is significantly out-of-date. So the photo files are where F-Spot put them, and, irrespective of how Picasa organises them in its own “virtual” folders, changes made to the photo in Picasa alter the original photo in its F-spot location. This should be manageable given that Picasa can work on existing files, without having to separately import them to a different place on the file system. want any changes to also be the same in F-spot.Some people want to use F-Spot and Picasa together – F-spot to import and tag photos and Picasa to do minor editing ready for printing. ImageMagick crashes on large images Posted in Graphics, Open Source, Programming, Ubuntu F-spot vanished in Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid) ImageMagick: convert quits after some pages It looks like these changes are all about security concerns with the intention of preventing malicious resource starvation. One other note – settings in policy.xml cannot be loosened through arguments supplied to the convert program via the CLI – they can only be tightened. Hmmm – now I change the disk setting back and I am still able to make the higher-resolution images, even after rebooting. It seems the following was set too low:Īnd it would successfully create high-resolution PNGs even if it took a long time. The reason was the policy.xml settings in /etc/ImageMagick-6/. Interestingly, the problem only occurred on Ubuntu 17.04 and not 16.10. This happened on a range of fast and slow machines and the amount of RAM seemed irrelevant. The second issue was the error message about cache resources exhausted. So the slowdown was because I had shifted from a fast desktop to a (more convenient but slower) laptop. And creating a 1200 dpi image might take 0.5 minutes on an i7 and 18.5 minutes on an i5. What takes 4 seconds on an i7 can take 71 seconds on an i5. Seemingly modest differences in CPU specs can create massive differences in the time required to convert PDFs to PNGs. I finally worked out what was going on by running the same tests on different machines. They wouldn’t handle high resolutions (600dpi seemed to be the limit for the images I was handling) and it took a very long time to complete. Recently, commands like this stopped working properly on my development machine. The sort of command run under the hood was:Ĭonvert -density 1200 -borderColor "#ff0000" -border 1x1 -fuzz 1% -trim "/home/g/projects/sofastats_proj/storage/img_processing/pdf2img_testing/KEEPME/raw_pdf.pdf" "/home/g/projects/sofastats_proj/storage/img_processing/pdf2img_testing/density_1200_fuzz_on_#ff0000.png" My sofastatistics application relies on ImageMagick to convert PDFs to PNGs.

This should lead to a noticeable boost in performance in some areas. Workaround: Go to Config > Emulation Settings > Game Fixes, and enable OPH Flag Hack.Note: Using EE Cycle Skipping can cause certain textures to become translucent, specially when viewed from a distance. Workaround: Go to Config > Emulation Settings > Speedhacks, and increase the EE Cycle Skipping until it runs smoothly.Switching to the widescreen mode has a small impact on performance. The game has a built in 16:9 widescreen mode that results in a larger portion of the world being visible. This game is very CPU intensive, even for PCSX2. Shadow of the Colossus is one of PCSX2's most popular games, but it is one of the most complicated to emulate due to the fact that the original PlayStation 2 release pushed the limits of the console and often suffered from frame-rate losses. Also known as Wang Da Yu Ju Xiang (AS), Wander to Kyozou (JP, KO).Enabling progressive scan and disabling widescreen mode from the in-game settings both improve performance.

there’s no question that photoshop is one of the biggest and probably most commonly used programs there is to make graphics.  but unless you find a way to obtain it somehow, it’s not exactly cheap.  there are some ways to get it for free but that’s not what i wanna talk about today.  instead, i wanted to make this post to give some free alternatives you can use for your roleplay needs.  i haven’t tried all of them myself ( because i do have a free photoshop license so i’ve been sticking with that for years now ) but i’ve done some research and decided to share this with all of you.
―  PHOTOPEA
Tumblr media
photopea is an online editor that’s actually strikingly similar to photoshop both in terms of looks / layout and features.  of course it doesn’t offer all the things photoshop does but i’d say it gives you basically everything you need for your basic roleplay needs.  you can import and export psds ( and other popular file formats ) and make icons and various graphics including gifs.  now the great thing about photopea is that since it runs on a website, you don’t need to download any software and it is usable on all devices ― windows and mac, android and ios.  it’s smooth and quick and ( if you know a bit about how graphic programs usually work ) pretty self explanatory.
PROS:  no additional software needed / mobile friendly / can open and save psd files / easy to edit pictures / features various adjustment options and effects and filters and brushes / pretty much a ‘small photoshop’
CONS:  ad banners can be annoying / no timeline feature ( that’s used for certain things, e.g. batch editing icons ) / you need a stable internet connection
―  GIMP
Tumblr media
again, gimp shares some features with photoshop although it can be quite overwhelming once you open the program for the first time just because it’s all very cluttered and it takes some time to get used to.  it’s probably a good tool that lets you do lots of things but if i’m honest i never really got into it so i can’t say all that much about it.  it doesn’t seem too bad though.
PROS:  available on windows, mac, and linux / can open and save psd files ( although it may potentially corrupt files if you wanna open them in other programs again ) / features various filters and brushes / open source so there are lot of resources for plugins
CONS:  ui outdated and cluttered / not exactly beginner friendly / uses a different color profile than photoshop so imported psds can look weird
―  PIXLR
Tumblr media
another web based program that works and looks similar to photopea but doesn’t offer as many features that you’d probably need for roleplay graphics.  i’m still listing it here because it does seem to be a nice and easy editing program if you just wanna do some more or less simple things that don’t require tons of layers and blending and whatever.
PROS:  no additional software needed / mobile friendly ( although the mobile version is different from the computer version ) / features various adjustment options and filters and brushes / you can open psds ( but they might look weird )
CONS:  you need a stable internet connection / no masks and no grouping of layers and no timeline feature / some tools are slow / ad banners can be annoying
―  PHOTO POS PRO
Tumblr media
i can’t say much about this one because i wasn’t able to test it myself but from what i’ve gathered it seems to be a good photoshop alternative that offers a lot of different features.  it also works with layers ( and is capable of using masks ) so that’s always a plus.
PROS:  has different layouts for beginners and experts / offers tutorials / features various adjustment options and effects
CONS:  only available on windows ( and mac if you use an emulator ) / export file size limits / can run slow at times
so that’s it.  there are probably even more alternatives you can find with the help of a simple google search but these were the ones i could find that seem to work best when it comes to making graphics for your roleplay.  if you ask me, photoshop is still the best options in my opinion ( probably because that’s what i’m most used to ) but i do understand not everyone is able to get it so i really hope this post will be useful for some of you.  just try out what works best for you and as always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.  i’ll try to answer them as best as i can.

Privacy Tools Master Post
This post is a supplement to this YouTube video.
The Easy Stuff
1. Get these browser addons. They work silently in the background and improve security without you having to care.
HTTPS Everywhere – Automatically encrypts the connection of every website you visit.
Privacy Badger  – Blocks all tracking cookies
ClearURLs  – Rips out tracking information from links.
Facebook Container  - Blocks the Facebook tracking network.
2. Enable “Do Not Track” on your browser – some websites ignore this so it won’t make you immune but do it anyway.
3. Turn off personalised ads on Facebook, Google, et al.
Google
Facebook
Twitter
Amazon
4. Switch off all the tracking settings in your computer/phone’s operating system
Windows 10
Mac
Android
iPhone
5. Switch your DNS to Cloudflare
The Less Easy Stuff (but it isn’t hard)
1. Get a good VPN (virtual private network) – So long as its running nobody can tell who you are on the internet*
Mullvad
ProtonVPN
Windscribe
2. Get a Good Browser – Google Chrome and Safari track your activity and send it to Google/Apple respectively. They’re also bloatware and slow your PC down.
Mozilla Firefox
Vivaldi
Brave
A word on TOR:
The TOR browser is another perfectly good pro-privacy web browser, but is also very slow because the Onion Network it runs off of to provide the high level of anonymity is quite limited in size. It is used by many people in authoritarian countries to bypass web restrictions so I’d recommend using the TOR browser sparingly to give these people more access.
3. Use a good Search Engine – One that doesn’t log your searches to provide better ads like Google.
Searx
Ecosia
DuckDuckGo
Startpage
4. Switch to a good email provider – one that encrypts your emails and doesn’t read the contents like Gmail or Outlook.
Protonmail
Thunderbird
5. Talk on a good messaging app
Signal
This app encrypts your messages and does not read them, unlike Facebook Messenger et al. Used by governments & politicians to keep official state secrets, so you know it’s good.
6. Delete your Facebook account if possible.
7. Consider changing operating systems, but realistically you’re going to stick with Windows 10, so here’s how to minimise the tracking on that. You can also use Ubuntu or any other type of Linux - but don’t expect to play Steam games or use photoshop on it because Linux is crap.
Missed anything? I probably did. Here’s an even more extensive list of pro-privacy tools to replace other tools like calendar apps or whatever.
I will probably continue to update this blogpost from time to time so check back once in a while if you like.
*You are still identifiable to the sites you visit because of browser fingerprinting  – but with a VPN, nobody outside of you or the website can tell who you are.
No company or organisation paid me to promote any of these services or products. There is no guarantee you are completely anonymous on the internet.

Lost Objects:  A Thor Fanfic
Lost Objects Masterlist | More Small Gods
Buy me a ☕  Character Pairing:  Thor x F!Reader
Rating:  E
Word Count:  1831
Warnings: Angst, PTSD, Grief (smut on series)
Synopsis: Thor has lost a lot in a very short period of time and he’s worried about losing himself too.  He goes to the one person who understands loss.
A/N: Reader is a minor god.
Tumblr media
Chapter 1
Thor was lost.
He had been for a while now, though it was hard to measure.  Partially because he had lived such a long, long time and most of it had gone by without much disrupting his enjoyment or general world view and then all at once it was just one thing after another and he couldn’t quite seem to catch his breath.
Perhaps it had begun to lose himself back when his father had first banished him to Midgard.  He had certainly felt lost for a while there, but usually, he looked back at that as the start of finding who he truly was.  Becoming worthy of Mjolnir and meeting Jane had been so significant, even when he had been forced to destroy the Bifrost and watched his brother fall to what he had thought was his death, Thor has still felt himself.
After that, it was one thing after another.  A barrage of pain and loss and he couldn’t keep up with it.  His mother, his brother, his relationship, his father, Mjolnir, his friends, his planet, his brother again, half of the universe, more of his friends.  Somewhere in all that loss and grief and guilt, he’d lost his direction and that core feeling of who he was, and he didn’t know what to do so he could stop feeling all this pain.
Then, in one single moment of clarity, he thought of you.
Midgard was not a world of gods.  Gods would visit, of course, Thor himself favored the small blue planet, but the line between science and magic was large, and rarely were gods born on the planet.
Yet sometimes the magic would seep through.  Maidardians liked to pray even when they didn’t know they were.  They would wish for certain things or give worship to them.  If enough did, then a god would be born.  They were minor deities and rarely held much power.  Yet they served their function and grew with the population's devotion.
None were prayed to quite as often as you.
You were not an easy person to track down.  Thor knew that he had to find you in the last place he looked or else it would be not at all.
So he started at the finish.  Going to the last conceivable place on the planet you might find a minor deity and announcing loudly that he would give up looking after trying the small cabin on the side of the hill.  Just as he put his hand on the door handle it swung open and he was greeted by you.
Along with the cable knit sweater that was three sizes too big, spotted with holes, and frayed at the hems, you wore a pair of jeans that were obviously someone’s favorite but based on the fit, that someone was not you.  You had a pair of mismatched socks on your feet, a single fingerless glove on your left hand, and a ring on every finger on your right, most of them the engagement variety.
You looked up at him and smiled.  “Thor,” you said warmly.  “Are you lost?”
He smiled, trying to put on the brave face he wore for everyone.  He was strong after all.  The strongest Avengers.  If he showed weakness, then he’d be someone who wasn’t Thor, the god of thunder.
“Yes,” he said.  “No.  That is… maybe.”
You stepped aside and he ducked his head under the door frame and entered your cottage.  It was impossibly large inside what had seemed like a tiny building.  It was cluttered in the sense that a hoarder who hadn’t left the house for fifty years except to bring more things in, is cluttered.  There were stacks of parcels that were addressed to other people, baskets full of socks that lacked a pair, toys, and pacifiers that looked sad and weathered, bowls sat on top of every flat surface full of jewelry in many shapes, sizes, and styles.
Thor wound his way through until he found a couch.  It had seen better days and he had to move a one-eyed teddy bear to take a seat.
“Can I get you a drink?  I have tea or coffee?  Not much else I’m afraid,” you offered.
“Coffee,” Thor said.  He wasn’t sure he really wanted it, but he was grateful for the opportunity to get his thoughts in order.
The sound of you puttering around in the kitchen was the only sound at all.  Thor thought of all the things he had lost and exactly why he had come here.  When you returned he still wasn’t quite sure what he was going to say.  You handed Thor a mug.  It was black with the silhouette of a penguin on it with the words ‘LINUX, open mind, open-source’ written on it.  You had a teacup, it was floral and had gold around the rim.
“The coffee is Kopi Luak,” you said as he took the mug from you.  “It was confiscated in New Zealand customs and ended up here.”
“Kopi Luak?”  Thor asked.
You shook your head and sat down beside him.  “The beans are passed through the stomach of an animal called a Civit before being harvested and roasted.  I can’t say I approve of the process, but I am limited to what passes through here,” you explained.  “Now, what is it you’ve lost?”
“My brother…”  Thor said, the word coming out quickly like it was determined to jump its place in his mental queue.
“Oh, Thor,” you said, putting your hand on his.  “I deal with lost things.  People?  They are above my jurisdiction.  The prayers for lost people are more for your realm than this one.”
Thor sagged and put his cup down.  He ran his hands through his hair the pain and frustration he felt almost overwhelming him.  “There’s been so much.  Too much.  My whole family.  My friends.  Asgard is gone.  I don’t know where to go or what to do.  I feel lost and I don’t know how to find my way back out.”
You took his hand.  His large palms dwarfed yours.  “Thor, I am a minor god,” you said.  “What you have been through is awful and if I could help I would, but I deal in socks and loose change.  Your identity is yours.  You still have it.  It’s here -“ you touched his forehead and moved your hand to his chest just above his heart.  “- and here.”
Tears pricked Thor’s eyes and he wiped them away in frustration. “I don’t want to feel this way anymore.”
“That I can understand too well,” you said.  You wrapped your arms around him and very gradually he let himself sag into your arms.  “You are very young,” you said quietly.  “It is a large burden to carry.  Can I give you some advice?  I can’t promise it will be good.”
“Please,” he said, his voice cracking with the desperation he felt.
“Grieve, Thor,” you said.  “It isn’t weak to love people.  It isn’t weak to feel pain at their loss.  Let yourself have your sorrow.  Feel it.  Let it out.  I am a god on a planet of mortals.  I have lost more than has ever come to me.  They were your parents and your brother.  Your friends.  Your home.  You loved them all and now they are gone.  That is terrible.  It’s terrible, Thor.  They didn’t deserve that and neither did you.  Grieve.  Feel sad.  Cry.  Wail.  Scream.  If you don’t experience your grief, you lose more of yourself than you can possibly know.”
“I am the strong one,” Thor said.  “I can’t show such weakness.”
“There is nothing weak about experiencing your emotions,” you said gently, your fingers tangling into his hair and massaging his scalp.  “Besides, who do you need to be strong for now.  It is just me here, everyone else is gone.”
He wrapped a large arm around your lap and he started to cry.  It started small and silent, his tears just running down his cheek as he pressed his face into your lap.  Soon he was crying in big wracking sobs.  He cried for his mother and his father.  He cried for Loki.  For Jane.  He cried for Heimdal and Fandral and Volstagg.  For Asgard, the home where he grew up and had so many happy memories.  He cried for the people he couldn’t save and for the ones he did that he let down when he didn’t have the strength to lead them.  He cried for dwarves on Nidavellir and for Mjolnir the weapon they had forged him and was like a friend in of itself.  He cried for Natasha and Tony.  And for the fact that one day he would lose all the rest too.
You held him, never once telling him to quiet.  You just let him cry in your arms, your fingers moving over his scalp and caressing his hair.
As the tears slowed and then stopped he felt a strange sense of relief.  He didn’t feel better, but lighter perhaps.  He sat up and wiped his eyes.  “Thank you.”
“You have nothing to thank me for,” you assured him.  “Come; there is something I have which might interest you.”
You got up and he followed after you.  You led him past more parcels and piles of letters.  They started to appear yellowed with age and as he wound through the room the artifacts got older too.  Barrels of spice and coins from countries that no longer existed.  Looms of silks that had been damaged by saltwater.  You stopped at a table.  It was remarkably bare except for a piece of velvet draped over a small pile in the middle.  You lifted the plush fabric and revealed a pile of broken metal and what was clearly the handle of Mjolnir.  He knew it better than he knew himself. The length that was too short due to Loki’s meddling.  The intricate scrollwork on the cap that held the leather strap he used to keep hold of it.  The dark wood with the silver swirling up its length.  It was his hammer, broken but his.
“Each time you prayed that it could be returned more of it came to me.  There is still some missing but if you want you can stay.  Pray for it at night and I think together we can repair it,” you explained.
“Are you sure you don’t mind?”  Thor asked as he ran his hand over Mjolnir’s handle.
“It would be an honor,” you said, putting your hand on his shoulder.  “It’s been a long time since I’ve had company and it’s never been from someone of your status.”
He turned and looked at you, a frown forming on his face as you smiled up at him.  “I am not a king.”
“I’m not sure that’s true,” you said.  “But if you believe it is, then you are one step closer to finding what you’ve lost and I guess I can help after all.”

LGBTQ Visual Novel Review - Rituals in the Dark
Rituals in the Dark is a short independent Yuri visual novel by ebi-hime. This small visual novel, set in modern England, tells a sweet story about a timid girl falling for a mysterious stranger. It incorporates slight elements of atmospheric horror in its unique presentation. The ambiguity of the story and its eerie aura favorably compare it to classic ghost stories of the Victorian era. While Rituals in the Dark succeeds in many aspects, a few glaring errors hold it back in some crucial ways.
Tumblr media
Rituals in the Dark begins with a dense wall of narration describing the events which set up the story. Protagonist Aspen, a teenage girl about to enter college, is shocked to discover the body of her elderly neighbor, Mrs. Leigh when she visits her home to check on her. Several months later, Leigh’s residence has begun to fall to ruin, with looters and squatters pillaging the abode. Aspen’s friends pressure the reluctant girl to return to the house, where she discovers a mysterious girl in a white dress. The girl, Althea, displays a troubling knowledge of Aspen and her personality and a fascination with her. Aspen becomes more and more curious about Althea, leading to her returning to the house in the night to see her.
Tumblr media
Naturally, as this is a Yuri, a romantic relationship begins to sprout between Althea and Aspen. Their bond is well described and developed, with them naturally growing closer to each other through the course of the visual novel. Because of its short playtime, clocking in at around three hours, Rituals in the Dark is not able to fully showcase more casual and character-building moments between the two. Although they have good chemistry and an interesting dynamic every scene featuring the girls feels inexorably driven towards pushing the two characters together, which, unfortunately, made the romance feel forced. However, the urgency present in every encounter contributed significantly to Rituals in the Dark’s greatest achievement, its atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Ebi-hime presents a wonderfully spooky and subtle world, for which I favorably compare it to the best ghost stories. The game is set almost entirely at night and in one area, Leigh’s house, which greatly adds to the unsettling feeling, and probably spared the production a great deal of expense. Eerie description and narration permeate the text of the visual novel, with Aspen’s inner thoughts and feelings significantly contributing. Very little of the game focuses on dialogue, which helps diminish the detrimental effects of not having voice acting.
However, the game does not exploit the dark atmosphere for scares or panic but is instead content with instilling a consistently unsettling feeling in its players and keeping a trepidatious shadow over the romance. When the final reveal comes, it feels deservedly climatic without disturbing the tone of the game. The twist which follows and closes out the game is flawlessly executed and leaves the story just ambiguous enough for a few worthy interpretations, none of which I will spoil here.
Tumblr media
Sadly, although the atmosphere is incredible, and the ending near-flawless, there are some severe detriments in the visual novel. The beginning especially feels slow compared with the rest of the game, and there are a few ludicrous choices, such as an embarrassing and juvenile section devoted to cheap and unnecessary dirty humor. Additionally, the major scenes are divided by walls of narration that reflect on the previous encounters and foreshadow coming events. While beautifully written and wondrously insightful, these interludes make the game feel fragmented and episodic, rather than a single whole product.
Furthermore, all the side characters feel like cheap flat plot devices that exist only to contextualize Aspen’s apprehensive nature and further the plot. Her friend, Pippa, is unruly and lacks boundaries. Her mother is overbearing, and her father too lax. Only Lakhi, another one of Aspen’s friends, is granted any real characterization, thanks to her slightly increased screen time. In contrast to the lackluster side characters, the main couple, Aspen and Althea, are phenomenally well developed and written.
Tumblr media
Aspen is extremely timid and has crushingly low self-esteem. Her worries are exacerbated by the trauma of finding Mrs. Leigh’s corpse. Her insecurities include everything from her friendships to her appearance. She cannot fathom how someone like Althea became so interested in one as boring and ordinary as her. Aspen’s poor self-image is repeatedly shown and told to the audience, to the point of being excessive, as the game hammer’s the knowledge that she lacks confidence into readers’ skulls. Aspen changes slightly throughout the game, becoming surer of herself and taking more risks, usually to be with Althea. However, she still feels like the same young woman we are first introduced to, which feels appropriate given the limited scope of the title.
Althea is much opaquer than Aspen, given that her thoughts are not narrated, which heightens the mystery around her. She is mischievous and often pokes fun at Aspen good-naturedly. Althea is also much more forward than Aspen, making her feelings and attraction to her abundantly clear. Thus, she is also the one to initiate physical contact between the two, which at most consists of a passionate kiss, which is accompanied by unfortunately lewd descriptions, including details such as Althea pushing her tongue into Aspen’s mouth. Very little is definite about the character, depending on the individual reader’s interpretation, which makes her feel like an unobtainable illusion or even an apparition.
Tumblr media
Rituals in the Dark features artwork by DarkSin, Renmiou, and Ruderoo. It has a unique style rarely seen in visual novels, which, while not to my taste, contributes to the overall presentation significantly. Both Althea and Aspen are drawn gorgeously, perhaps a bit too well considering how “plain-looking” Aspen is supposed to be. The direction also makes excellent use of this artwork, repeatedly zooming and panning across it to make the mostly static world feel more lively and engaging. However, sometimes these closeups reveal the flaws present in all artwork when viewed up close, displaying blurry lines and pixels poorly.
Tumblr media
Further, even though the game is concise, readers will start to tire of the same backgrounds being used repeatedly, with about four dominating the run-time. Thankfully, CG artwork is frequently present, and used effectively, highlighting the critical developments in the girls’ romance. Sadly, the soundtrack by Hope fares far worse. If the backgrounds become stale by the game’s conclusion, the music may as well be solid stone; it grates on the ear with such repetition. It is so hopelessly boring that I honestly cannot remember a single track and looked forward to every moment the music stopped.
Rituals in the Dark is an excellent short Yuri romance with a delightfully foreboding and horrifying atmosphere. The main characters are wonderfully written and well developed, with a budding romance interweaving the spooky atmosphere perfectly. However, awkward sexual moments, an awful soundtrack, and the limited scope hurt what is otherwise a beautiful and chilling experience. I recommend reading through it once if you can, especially if you are a fan of ghost stories or are looking for a small addition to your Yuri library.
Ratings: Story – 8 Characters – 6 Art – 5 Music – 3 LGBTQ – 5 Sexual Content – 4 Final – 6
The visual novel is available on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Cloudpunk, maybe a review
Boy, I like Cloudpunk. It’s a cyberpunk game by @ionlands where you play a delivery driver, making seedy deliveries to seedy clients. The game excels at being simple, atmospheric, and building an interesting world for you to explore. I’d probably categorize it as an open-world adventure game. It has a linear story with some options you can make yourself, but the main storyline seems to follow the same path regardless of which decisions you make (this may be wrong, I’m only a couple of hours in).
I don’t feel like writing paragraphs, but I will make a list of the stuff that I like and don’t like about the game. Make your own judgments from that. tl;dr I recommend this game if you like playing an interactive story and exploring a neat world. If you want an action game, look somewhere else.
The good stuff
The controls are dead simple. You can play on a keyboard with one hand. I’d actually recommend a controller instead, but I don’t have mine.
The game starts by dropping you immediately into driving your flying car (your HOVA) with an overlay of the controls. No tutorial, no intro cinematic exposition dump - you start playing the game. Excellent.
The driving feels great. They did a really good job with flying car traffic, where you have a third dimension to get around the slow folks in your way. Also, if you’re not careful, you can bust up your HOVA so there is a motivation to not run into buildings all the time.
Another point about the driving - there are highways and well-defined “roads”, but you aren’t limited to those. You can go “off-road” if you want, at the expense of speed. But it’s up to you, which I love.
Fully voiced dialog. Their VAs did a really good job.
You go at your own pace with the story. There are side quests, and if you want to take the time to get a lot of punch cards for the weirdo outside of your apartment, you go ahead and do that.
They really nailed the Blade Runner aesthetic of cyberpunk in the world. You want neon city with rain? You got it.
The sound design, to me, is great. I love the soundtrack that picks up when you start driving. It feels very synthwave and is the perfect match of the environment you’re in.
I was really happy to find that if I move to a different map while someone is talking, the dialog continues once the map is loaded instead of cutting off. Considering the dialog is one of the most important things in the game, I’m glad the devs recognized this and made it work.
I was able to get it running on Linux without much of a headache.
The subjective stuff
It’s hard to see in their previews, but the graphics are voxel-y. I was a little put off at first, but now it doesn’t bother me.
The dialog ranges between annoyingly exposition heavy to clever and witty.
Also, there is a lot of dialog. I’m totally fine with this, especially because it’s all voiced, but I know that puts some people off.
While it really nails the rainy neon city aesthetic, I personally feel like it relies too heavily on it for the mood of the game. I feel like Rania should be wearing a poncho or carrying an umbrella.
They do have some dialog that comments on the perpetual rain, so I won’t be too harsh about it
I want to ride the trains, dammit
The stuff that could be better
When you leave your car and do stuff on foot, the camera has these predefined angles that it turns to so that you’re always in view. While this is obviously necessary, it feels kind of random at points, and you all of a sudden have to change which way you’re moving the stick/pushing WASD to keep your character moving in the same direction.
Your vehicle gets damaged, but there’s no sort of bar or indicator showing you how much damage you’ve accrued.
The map doesn’t have a legend. There are some symbols on there that I just don’t understand.
The only graphics settings are to change between windowed/fullscreen, changing the resolution, and to turn on v-sync. When I was having problems with getting it to run on Linux, it would have been nice to have some more graphics settings to tweak to get it to run smoother.
Because of the constant aesthetic of rainy neon city, the areas of the game verge on being “same-y”, which makes it hard to distinguish one place from another visually.
I wish there was a “credits” portion that I could look at and look up the voice actors to see if I recognize them from something else.
So yeah, it’s a fun game. I’m having a good time slamming into buildings and making morally ambiguous deliveries. It’s only $20 and I’d say you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Digital Self-Sufficiency 101
I’ve noticed that the chaos of 2020 has caused many people to notice that commercially available technologies have grown increasingly intrusive, expensive, and restrictive. Therefore, I thought I would put together some easy ways to maintain privacy and self-sufficiency as much as possible in the digital age.
SOFTWARE IN GENERAL
Using incognito mode or private mode in your browser actually does nothing to prevent your internet service provider from watching your activity. The Tor browser is your easiest option for keeping your search history private.
To keep downloads, system updates, and activity from other applications private, consider using a VPN. Personally, I sometimes use ProtonVPN for this, but some people might find it uncomfortably slow. A proxy server will not provide the same layer of protection but suffices for day-to-day use.
Never reuse passwords, but it is usually okay to choose a common theme for them, and choosing long or uncommon phrases is actually safer than using random strings of characters.
Password managers are also relatively safe. KeePass is a good open-source choice that creates an encrypted password database on your device and so keeps your information entirely private.
Consider switching browsers. Chrome (including Chromium) and Edge both send data to Google and Microsoft respectively. Firefox is heavily customizable, open-source, and focused on privacy; Opera is closed-source but does provide useful features such as a built-in browser VPN.
TrackMeNot is an add-on that performs automated random Google searches, making it much harder for Google to determine your search activity. Also, use an adblocker wherever possible - AdBlock Plus is an effective free choice.
Archive.org is an excellent source of ebooks, journals, music, etc. that allows you to borrow materials and download them or read them online without requiring any personal information.
DRM, or digital rights management, is a form of software used to prevent people from copying files or accessing them outside of certain applications (such as iTunes for music, Adobe Reader for ebooks, etc). It is perfectly legal to remove DRM from works you have purchased, so that you actually own the file and not just a license to access it within a certain framework.
There are several plugins available for the Calibre ebook library that get rid of DRM on book files; this is the one I use. I don’t have iTunes or Spotify, but I’ve heard good things about NoteBurner, and I know that plenty of alternatives exist for DRM removal of music files.
Also, youtube-dl is a useful tool for downloading videos from YouTube. Be careful to use this only on open-source or public domain videos.
LINUX
Linux has advanced astronomically in the past decade -- it is definitely the best option for privacy and security, and is now fairly easy to use.
If you’re just beginning, Ubuntu is a great choice with graphics that will make your PC look and feel a bit like a Mac. You can completely opt out of giving any data to the developers, and it’s by far the most commonly used distro in the Linux community, meaning that most support and apps are developed for it.
Take a test drive! Here is an easy tutorial for how to put Ubuntu on a USB stick and run it on your computer without affecting your Windows system or changing any of your files.
On most hardware, an out of the box Ubuntu installation works fine for browsing the web, watching movies, studying, and day-to-day use -- do test it using a USB before installing it, though.
The best thing about Linux is that you are the absolute dictator of your own computer. The appearance, functionality, and resource management of your system is all up to you. Also, there are hundreds of different operating systems and configurations under the Linux umbrella.
The fact that most viruses and malware are designed to run on Windows offers a degree of protection to Linux users, and those running more obscure distributions are less vulnerable, but security consciousness is still very important. ClamAV is a good open-source antivirus specifically designed to scan for malware targeted at Linux systems, and chkrootkit can detect any rootkits that may be installed on your system.
If you use Linux exclusively, the WINE toolkit can allow you to run programs designed for Windows. It does require some setup but eliminates a lot of compatibility issues (*pointed glance at my online classes*).
WINDOWS
A computer with standard Windows installed will never be all that private or independent, given the limitations hard-coded into the system, but there are still plenty of things you can do.
Don’t use a Microsoft account on your personal computer -- this enables Microsoft to combine data sent from your computer with your personal information. To turn this off, go into Settings, select Accounts, find your own account, and click the “Delete” option.
If you are installing Windows on a computer, don’t connect to the Internet during the setup process. When it asks you to connect to WiFi, click the “I don’t have Internet” option in the bottom left corner -- this will allow you to set up Windows using a local account, bypassing the requirement to create a Microsoft account.
When it comes to protecting your PC from hackers, choose strong passwords and be careful what you click on, and after that Microsoft Defender should do the trick. For the most part, commercial antivirus software is not necessary; any malicious actor worth their salt will be able to circumvent common choices like McAfee or Norton.
The Windows updater includes many invasive features without a way to opt out, and can be disabled. Hit the Windows key + R to bring up the Run menu, type “services.msc” in the text box, and press Enter to open the Services Manager. Find Windows Updates and Windows Update Medic, right-click on both of those, and select “Disable.”
Use caution when electing not to update Windows; oftentimes patches for important security vulnerabilities are incorporated into the updates, and Microsoft doesn’t allow users to select which updates to install.
OS X / iOS
The entire Apple business model is based on hardware that’s far below the industry standard for the price range and software that’s obsolescent from the moment you purchase it. These products are pure fashion over function and are pretty much inseparable from their surveillance software and use restrictions.
HARDWARE
Don’t get a new laptop simply because yours is getting older or slower. Hardware available to the average consumer hasn’t changed significantly in the past decade. If your computer is getting older and feels slower, that’s probably because Windows has grown heavier and less efficient with every update.
Self-sufficiency and durability go together in technology as in all other facets of manufacturing.
SSDs may be slightly faster than conventional hard disk drives, but they don’t have as much storage capacity and will fail more quickly, so for most uses an HDD is probably more practical. Anything that has “flash memory” as its sole form of storage should be avoided.
Entry-level laptops in 2020 are usually worse in terms of design and specifications than they were in 2015. Second-hand options can be a good idea, especially workstations designed for business use (my PC was made in 2012 and is still humming along with no problems).
Swappable batteries are increasingly rare but go a long way to increase the usefulness of a PC while traveling or offline. Also, touchscreens always shorten battery life by at least an hour or two.
Intel Atom processors are common on lower-cost laptops but are very slow and prone to overheating unpredictably.
Also, anything without a fan (look for a visible vent on the underside) can overheat in the summer and is probably indicative of lower processing power.
The vast majority of two-in-one laptops and tablet hybrids are severely underpowered -- the extremely small size prevents the use of proper computer hardware.

Version 428
youtube
windows
zip
exe
macOS
app
linux
tar.gz
I had a good couple weeks working on the taglist code and some other jobs.
If you are on Windows and use the 'extract' release, you may want to do a 'clean' install this week. Extra notes below.
taglists
So, I took some time to make taglists work a lot cleaner behind the scenes and support more types of data. A heap of code is cleaner, and various small logical problems related to menus are fixed. The tag right-click menu is also more compact, quicker to see and do what you want.
The main benefits though are in the manage tags dialog. Now, the '(will display as xxx)' sibling suffix colours in the correct namespace for the sibling, and parents 'hang' underneath all tags in all the lists. It is now much easier to see why a parent or sibling is appearing for a file.
This is a first attempt. I really like how these basically work, but it can get a bit busy with many tags. With the cleaner code, it will be much easier to expand in future. I expect to add 'expand/collapse parents' settings and more sorts, and maybe shade parents a bit transparent, in the coming weeks. Please let me know how it works for you IRL and I'll keep working.
the rest
The main nitter site seems to be overloaded. They have a bunch of mirrors listed here: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/wiki/Instances
I picked two roughly at random and added new downloaders for them. If you have Nitter subs, please move their 'sources' over, and they should start working again (they might need to do a bit of 'resync' and will complain about file limits being hit since the URLs are different, but give them time). If you would rather use another mirror, feel free to duplicate your own downloaders as well. Thanks to a user who helped here with some fixed-up parsers.
I gave the recently borked grouped 'status' sort in thread watchers and downloader pages another go, and I improved the reporting there overall. The 'working' status shouldn't flicker on and off as much, there is a new 'pending' status for downloaders waiting for a work slot, and the 'file status' icon column now shows the 'stop' symbol when files are all done.
The menu entry to 'open similar-looking files' is now further up on thumbnails' 'open' submenus.
The duplicate filter has its navigation buttons on the right-hand hover window rearranged a bit. It is silly to have both 'previous' and 'next' when there are only two files, so I merged them. You can also set 'view next' as a separate shortcut for the duplicate filter, if you want to map 'flip file' to something else just for the filter.
windows clean install
If you use the Windows installer, do not worry, these issues are fixed automatically for you from now on.
I updated to a new dev machine this week. Some libraries were updated, and there is now a dll conflict, where a dll from an older version is interfering with a new one. As it happens, the library that fails to load is one I made optional this week, so it doesn't ''seem'' to actually stop you from booting the client, but it will stop you from running the Client API in https if you never did it before (the library does ssl certificate generation).
It is good to be clean, so if you extract the Windows release, you may want to follow this guide this week: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/help/getting_started_installing.html#clean_installs
full list
interesting taglist changes:
taglists work way better behind the scenes
when siblings display with the '(will display as xxx)' suffix, this text is now coloured by the correct namespace!
parents now show in 'manage tags dialog' taglists! they show up just like in a write/edit tag autocomplete results list
the tag right-click menu has had a pass. 'copy' is now at the top, the 'siblings and parents' menu is split into 'siblings' and 'parents' with counts on the top menu label and the submenus for each merged, and the 'open in new page' commands are tucked into an 'open' submenu. the menu is typically much tighter than before
when you hit 'select files with these tags' from a taglist, the thumbgrid now takes keyboard focus if you want to hit F7 or whatever
custom tag presentation (_options->tag presentation_, when you set to always hide namespaces or use custom namespace separator in read/search views) is more reliable across the program. it isn't perfect yet, but I'll keep working
a heap of taglist code has been cleaned up. some weird logical issues should be better
now the code is nicer to work with, I am interested in feedback on how to further improve display and workflows here
.
the rest:
added two mirrors for nitter, whose main site is failing due to load. I added them randomly from the page here: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/wiki/Instances . if you have nitter subs, please move their download source to one of the mirrors or set up your own url classes to other mirror addresses. thanks to a user for providing other parser fixes here
gallery download pages now show the 'stop' character in the small file column when the files are done
gallery download pages now report their 'working' status without flicker, and they report 'pending' when waiting for a download slot (this situation is a legacy hardcoded bottleneck that has been confusing)
thread watchers also now have the concept of 'pending', and also report when they are next checking
improved the new grouped status sort on gallery downloader and watcher pages. the ascending order is now DONE, working, pending, checking later (for watchers), paused
the network request delay after a system resume is now editable under the new options->system panel. default is 15 seconds
the 'wait on files too' option is moved from 'files and trash' to this panel
when the 'just woke' status is active, you now get a little popup with a cancel button to override it
'open similar-looking files' thumbnail menu entry is moved up from file relationships to the 'open' menu
the duplicate filter right-hand hover window no longer has both 'previous' and 'next' buttons, since they both act as 'flip', and the merged button is moved down, made bigger, and has a new icon
added 'view next' to the duplicate filter shortcut set, so you can set a custom 'flip between pair' mapping just for that filter
thanks to a user helping me out, I was able to figure out a set of lookups in the sibling/parent system that were performing unacceptably slow for some users. this was due to common older versions of sqlite that could not optimise a join with a multi-index OR expression. these queries are now simpler and should perform well for all clients. if your autocomplete results from a search page with thumbs were achingly slow, let me know how they work now!
the hydrus url normalisation code now treats '+' more carefully. search queries like 6+girls should now work correctly on their own on sites where '+' is used as a tag separator. they no longer have to be mixed with other tags to work
.
small/specific stuff:
the similar files maintenance search on shutdown now reports file progress every 10 files and initialises on 0. it also has faster startup time in all cases
when a service is deleted, all currently open file pages will check their current file and tag domains and update to nicer defaults if they were pointed at the now-missing services
improved missing service error handling for file searches in general--this can still hit an export folder pointed at a missing service
improved missing service error handling for tag autocomplete searches, just in case there are still some holes here
fixed a couple small things in the running from source help and added a bit about Visual Studio Build Tools on Windows
PyOpenSSL is now optional. it is only needed to generate the crt/key files for https hosting. if you try to boot the server or run the client api in https without the files and without the module available to generate new ones, you now get a nice error. the availability of this library is now in the client's about window
the mpv player will no longer throw ugly errors when you try to seek on a file that its API interface cannot support
loading a file in the media viewer no longer waits on the file system lock on the main thread (it was, very briefly), so the UI won't hang if you click a thumb just after waking up or while a big file job is going on
the 'just woke' code is a little cleaner all around
the user-made downloader repository link is now more obvious on Lain's import dialog
an old hardcoded url class sorting preference that meant gallery urls would be matched against urls before post, and post before file, is now eliminated. url classes are now just preferenced by number of path components, then how many parameters, then by example url length, with higher numbers matching first (the aim is that the more 'specific' and complicated a url class, the earlier it should attempt to match)
updated some of the labelling in manage tag siblings and parents
when you search autocomplete tags with short inputs, they do not currently give all 'collapsed' matching results, so an input of 'a' or '/a/' does not give the '/a/' tag. this is an artifact of the new search cache. after looking at the new code, there is no way I can currently provide these results efficiently. I tested the best I could figure out, but it would have added 20-200ms lag on all PTR searches, so instead I have made a plan to resurrect an old cache in a more efficient way. please bear with me on this problem
tag searches that only include unusual characters like ? or & are now supported without having to lead the query with an asterisk. they will be slower than normal text search
fixed a bug in the 'add tags before import' dialog for local imports where deleting a 'quick namespace' was not updating the tag list above
.
windows clean install:
I moved to a new windows dev machine this week and a bunch of libraries were updated. I do not believe the update on Windows _needs_ a clean install this week, as a new dll conflict actually hits the coincidentally now-optional PyOpenSSL, but it is worth doing if you want to start using the Client API soon, and it has been a while, so let's be nice and clean. if you extract the release on Windows, please check out this guide: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/help/getting_started_installing.html#clean_installs
the Windows installer has been updated to remove many old files. it should now do clever clean installs every week, you have nothing to worry about!™
.
boring db breakup:
the local tags cache, which caches tags for your commonly-accessed hard drive files, is now spun off to its own module
on invalid tag repair, the new master tags module and local tags cache are now better about forgetting broken tags
the main service store is spun off to its own module. several instances of service creation, deletion, update and basic fetching are merged and cleaned here. should improve a couple of logical edge cases with update and reset
.
boring taglist changes:
taglists no longer manage text and predicates, but a generalised item class that now handles all text/tag/predicate generation
taglist items can occupy more than one row. all position index calculations are now separate from logical index calculations in selection, sizing, sorting, display, and navigation
all taglist items can present multiple colours per row, like OR predicates
items are responsible for sibling and parent presentation, decoupling a heap of list responsibility mess
tag filter and tag colour lists are now a separate type handled by their own item types
subordinate parent predicates (as previously shown just in write/edit autocomplete result lists) are now part of multi-row items. previously they were 'quiet' rows with special rules that hung beneath the real result. some related selection/publish logic is a bit cleaner now
string tag items are now aware of their parents and so can present them just like autocomplete results in write/edit contexts
the main taglist content update routines have significantly reduced overhead. the various expansions this week add some, so we'll see how this all shakes out
the asynchronous sibling/parent update routine that populates sibling and parent data for certain lists is smarter and saves more work when data is cached
old borked out selection/hitting-skipping code that jumped over labels and parents is now removed
'show siblings and parents' behaviour is more unified now. basically they don't show in read/search, but do in write/edit
a heap of bad old taglist code has been deleted or cleaned up
next week
This was a big couple of weeks. Setting up the new dev machine--I replaced my six year old HP office computer with a nice mini-pc with an SSD--worked out great, but there were some headaches as always. The taglist work was a lot too. I'll take next week a little easier, just working misc small jobs.

Some codecs are lossy," in the sense that they compress the audio down by getting rid of unnecessary" bits of knowledge, sacrificing high quality for economy of dimension. Different codecs are lossless," which means that they keep the precise high quality of the original supply audio. Lossy compression codecs like MP3, AAC, WMA or Ogg Vorbis will at all times lead to a slight reduction in quality, although at higher bitrates you might not even discover the distinction. With lossless codecs like WMA, ALACand FLAC, you may really re-create the original audio file from the compressed version, though at the expense of larger recordsdata. The standard path to adding files to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod runs via iTunes, and it will not settle for FLAC recordsdata. The answer? Convert them to Apple's ALAC format. Regardless of whether you might have a LAPTOP or a Mac, although, you will must get the suitable software to deliver your FLAC files into the iTunes fold. Couldn't discover any technical reasons to not go along with ALAC and it's so a lot easier to take care of than FLAC recordsdata. ALAC it's. Thank you for the affirmation. MP3 is a digital music format which permits CD tracks to be decreased to round a tenth of their normal dimension without a vital loss of quality. MP3 gets rid of a number of the data recorded in a track that our ears usually are not capable of hear after which uses complex algorithms to reduce the file size. This then lets you get lots of of songs on to a CD and it also has opened up a brand new market over the web - the obtain market as download instances have been significantly decreased. Utilizing foobar2000 and an Edirol outboard USB DAC I'm proud of the sound of FLAC information. However, I have not immediately in contrast them to the WAV they had been taken from. Theoretically there should be no distinction if the conversion algorithms are right and the ultimate quantity of jitter is at similar ranges. Nevertheless, real applications, actual circuits, and theory are different things. Apple lossless is proprietory (but not restricted) to Apple, ALAC is limited to 16 bits @ 44.1 khz. Convert FLAC or any other audio format to ALAC for iTunes. Freemake has a restricted variety of export formats, and it is slow. However, the consumer interface is straightforward to navigate and you can obtain the total model for free. AC3 iTunes - Convert AC3 to M4A, AIFF, or ALAC to play 5.1 or 6 channel AC3 recordsdata in iTunes, iPad, iPod, iPhone, and so on. First, while Apple did create the ALAC format, it is now open supply, so there is no monopoly. They do not reluctantly" acknowledge the existence of MP3 and MP4; iTunes first launched supporting solely MP3. Then it added AAC, which is MP4, which scads of people thought was a proprietary Apple format, and obtained all loopy about. AAC is superior to MP3, youtube to flac converter online free high alac quality download but they got accused of the same thing you wrote right here, because not many different apps or gadgets supported it initially. They all do now. Sort of like after they introduced USB on the first iMac; now USB is the usual.

and1 Hosting - Raising the bar
<p>1and1 Hosting - Raising the bar</p><p>First, I have to admit that I am a terrible customer. I'm a terrible customer. I am an obsessive and exigent customer. I don't always feel like I am receiving the value for my money. This is particularly true of hosting providers. Over the last four years I've had six occasions to change hosting providers because I felt that I wasn't receiving what I was promised. For a blogger it's a rare opportunity to praise a This link
host.</p><p><br></p><p>Two years ago I was reading about the latest technology in one of my favourite magazines, eWeek, when I came across a lovely advertisement on a full-page from 1and1 that offered an initial offer of free hosting for 3 years. Wait! You're not right! It's impossible! It can't be! Now, I'm off to the computer.</p><p><br></p><p>Yes, it was real. 1and1 provided web hosting for free for three years in order to launch its new public-sector hosting service. As a cash-strapped college student my first thought was to get a slice. I must admit that the pie was also delicious!</p><p><br></p><p>After roughly two years of hosting with 1and1, with minimal problems I'll say that I began to realize I was dangerously close to the bandwidth limit my free package had to offer. It's not surprising that these things occur when you are trying to establish a presence on the internet and provide free downloads. It was time to upgrade the hosting.</p><p><br></p><p>At the time, there were no amazing specials on offer at 1and1, so I decided to shop around. That was a big error. What I received was a lesson on how *not* to manage a hosting company. I will not be rude, but let's just advise against accounts for reseller hosting that are too cheap. Their uptime isn't as good as they claim, and each time you look around, some idiot is running a script which slows down the server to an absolute EZ Deals Honest Review
halt.</p><p><br></p><p>After a long period of irritable calls and numerous changes between providers, I finally discovered that 1and1 was the best host I'd ever encountered. Lucky for me, 1and1 emailed me with a special offer for their preview package holders. Their top shared Linux package was 50% off. This sounds like a good bargain. But what about next? You'll be more awestruck by this. I got the package for less than half price, and they also guarantee it for three years without any upgrade costs!</p><p><br></p><p>Although I might not have the best light bulb, I'm capable of recognizing a great bargain when I look it up. As you can see, I decided to sign for. What I received was far more than I expected and better than I ever thought of. My sites ran faster almost immediately following the upgrade. I'm thinking that the servers are less busy for customers who pay.</p><p><br></p><p>Then came the initial upgrade. At no additional cost my bandwidth and space were increased by two times. I thought "cool, I'll take this!" A few weeks later I was browsing the 1and1 website comparing options for potential customers when I noticed the ridiculously high price of the package that I had. I was happy that I got the value for my money, however I was a little disappointed for not getting the entire package spec. After all, I was promised that I would receive every upgrade to the package.</p><p><br></p><p>As with any other client who has had a nightmare, I dialed billing immediately to let them know my thoughts. The billing representative was experienced in dealing with clients like me. Within minutes of talking to me, he had me under control and assured me that my package would be ready for inspection within four weeks. It was just two weeks ago. He said that it took longer than anticipated to upgrade all accounts that were in use to the new specifications for accounts. I was truly surprised by stating that I would be getting more than the information available on the website. Yes! It's okay! Thank you for your time! Needless to say, I was left feeling very positive about that support call.</p><p><br></p><p>Let's look at the numbers. When I signed in to my account today, I was met with some incredibly generous Tools for digital marketers  numbers regarding the package I was using. I found that I have 30,000MB in storage and 1,500GB of transfer with a shared hosting plan that costs $19.99/mo. Wait! It's not correct! These are VPS specifications! That's right, you did take a look. With less than $20 per month, you can have 30GB of storage and 1.5TB transfer. Plus, I pay only $5.99 per domain per year using 1and1.</p><p><br></p><p>Now, let's be real. While these numbers are amazing Other providers also offer similar specifications. What is the difference between 1and1 and other providers? For starters, uptime! Every host I tried was down. However, with 1and1, that's not the case. I can count the number of times my website was down in the last two years. The majority of the times were due to an ISP router and not 1and1. Also, one thing I've grown to appreciate is their one-of-a-kind control panel. While it's not the fastest, it offers streamlined administration. This is especially relevant to managing domains. Even complete novices can navigate the 1and1 control panel easily and manage their package as if they were a professional.</p><p><br></p><p>It's true that I do not think it is easy to impress anybody, particularly when dealing with hosting providers. However, 1and1 has elevated the standard of what a good hosting service is in my mind. They are the benchmark I will use to judge any hosting provider. If you're looking for reliable, affordable, and good hosting providers, 1and1 is the best choice.</p><p><br></p><p>One thing I noticed negative about 1and1 was that it's not a bad thing. They are a little restrictive about script execution. This is a good thing for shared hosting environments. This also helps to explain why I haven't noticed the server being down when it's scheduled for an update. Who is going to complain about a free performance upgrade?</p><p><br></p><p>There is more information on 1and1's packages and other services at their site. For an example I'm currently using the Developer Package. I believe it is an excellent choice for moderate to high traffic websites.</p><p><br></p>

If you’ve noticed that your Mac is a little sluggish lately, the culprit may be hiding in plain sight. The longer you use your computer, the more junk files and caches build up in the hidden nooks and crannies of your hard disk.
DaisyDisk is a disk analyzer tool for OS X that visualizes hard disk usage and allows to free up hard disk space Free up gigabytes of disk space in minutes using the visual interactive map that reveals the biggest space hogs on your disk. Think about it..300MB here, 50MB here, 1GB there..soon, all the extra files become a drag on your computer. Ideally, you could free up a lot of memory if you got rid of this junk. The problem is that most digital junk is well-hidden and not grouped together very well. The solution is a specific type of utility app called a disk analyzer. These apps create a detailed map of what files are taking up room on your hard disk, making it easier to see where you can save space.
Disk Analyser For Mac
There are a ton of options out there, from the highly technical to the user-friendly. Because I’m generally intimidated by the inner workings of my computer, I took one of the more colorful and helpful options, DaisyDisk, for a test drive.
DaisyDisk features
DaisyDIsk packs a lot of functionality into a very pretty package. Here are some of its features:

Graphic interface
DaisyDisk uses an innovative circular design to show you the different files taking up space on your Mac. The display is color-coded, so you can easily distinguish between different types of data. Navigation is a snap: clicking on a section of the display zooms in and creates a new circular layout showing the chosen files in more detail.

Disk Selector
DaisyDisk isn’t limited to analyzing your Mac’s hard drive. It can give you a definitive breakdown of any drive connected to your computer, including external hard drives and backup disks. If you know what you’re looking for, the Scan Folder tool lets you focus on individual folders without having to dig through the main interface.
Collector
The app’s most satisfying feature is the file collector, which appears as a large dot in the bottom left corner. You can drag and drop any file here to target it for deletion. The app keeps a running count of how much space you’ll free up and presents you with a delete button. When you’ve collected all the trash DaisyDisk has identified on your drive, hit the Delete button to take it out for good.
Recommendations
DaisyDisk is capable of offering useful suggestions about which files can be deleted to free up more space. By flagging purgeable area and smaller orphaned items for deletion, it can help guide your disk cleanup.
If you’re curious about DaisyDisk, you can try a limited Trial mode for free. This version lets you scan most of your hard disk but won’t delete any files for you.
DaisyDisk is great for the casual Mac user looking to speed up their computer, but it’s not the only option. Another strong contender is CleanMyMac X, which includes a seamless disk speed optimizer that can achieve many of the same results with fewer steps.
Our team is working day and night to provide the best service for each and every customer so we are pleased to hear you are enjoying it. Vpn for macbook.
What makes DaisyDisk unique?
There are plenty of disk space analyzers out there, all jockeying for being the one for you. Some boast a wide range of features. Some combine the analyzer with lots of other tools. And some make smart suggestions about what you should delete.
DaisyDisk distinguishes itself from the pack with its stunning visual design, speed, and ease of use. Here’s the rundown:
Tumblr media
DaisyDisk is one of the nicest-looking disk analyzers available. The candy-colored wheel the app uses to represent your disk is visually engaging and easy to understand. At a glance, it lets you see which files are taking up the biggest “slice of the pie,” which makes exploration easy, and pleasing to the eye. The color contrasts also help illustrate the relations between different areas of your Mac.
It’s fast! Because of the amount of data they have to sift through, some disk analyzers can get slow. DaisyDisk, by contrast, is fast and fluid. Every click leads to a seamless reaction, and both the “quick scan” and standard scan functions work at an impressive pace. This helps ensure a smooth and pleasant workflow.
It’s easy, too. Because they deal with the deeper structures of your Mac, disk analyzers can be a little intimidating. DaisyDisk makes things look and feel friendlier and makes the deletion process fast and easy. Plus, building up a couple of gigabytes of junk in the collector before hitting the delete button feels like a real accomplishment.
DaisyDisk is good at representing and deleting files from your disk. This tool will help you organize space on your Mac more wisely and identify the heaviest folders. But, there is also another tool we can’t help but recommend when talking about the cleanup of your machine.
A full-featured toolkit like CleanMyMac X combines a DaisyDisk-like Space Lens feature with a wider range of tools, including a smart and powerful Uninstaller, System Junk cleaner and comprehensive Malware Removal modules. Try it for free here.
Is DaisyDisk safe?
As with any third-party software, it’s important to make sure that your disk analyzer comes from a reputable developer through a reliable channel. After all, to do their job well, disk analyzers need permission to access everything on your computer, and you want to be sure about the people you’re giving that access to.
DaisyDisk is distributed through the Mac App Store, so it’s been thoroughly vetted. If you don’t download it from the App Store make sure you download it directly from the developer’s website and not through a third party.
Another consideration with disk analyzers is how well they protect your essential files. DaisyDisk comes with built-in safeguards that keep the app from deleting critical system files. This is especially useful for all Mac users who are just trying to free up a little space: with these protections, you can purge junk from your Mac with confidence.
Users report that DaisyDisk support responds quickly and courteously to questions, which is always a plus for apps of this kind.
DaisyDisk review: The Verdict
DaisyDisk is a beautiful choice for a first disk analyzer. Its smooth interface helps you feel in control of a complex process, and its built-in limits help make sure you don’t make costly errors. Its feature set isn’t so extensive, but it’s a solid choice overall.

Windows Directory Statistics
Home
WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for various versions of Microsoft Windows. Note: if you are looking for an alternative for Linux, you are looking for KDirStat (apt-get install kdirstat or apt-get install k4dirstat on Debian-derivatives) or QDirStat and for MacOS X it would be Disk Inventory X or GrandPerspective.
Please visit the WinDirStat blog for more up-to-date information about the program.
On start up, it reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views:
The directory list, which resembles the tree view of the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
The treemap, which shows the whole contents of the directory tree straight away,
The extension list, which serves as a legend and shows statistics about the file types.
The treemap represents each file as a colored rectangle, the area of which is proportional to the file's size. The rectangles are arranged in such a way, that directories again make up rectangles, which contain all their files and subdirectories. So their area is proportional to the size of the subtrees. The color of a rectangle indicates the type of the file, as shown in the extension list. The cushion shading additionally brings out the directory structure.
