a/n: gender neutral reader, this ended at an unexpected note. lowercase spelling on purpose, @kage7ama
“what do you do when you’re upset, todoroki?”
the wave of an incoming breeze made your clothes move along with it. sitting on the grassy ground behind the ua dorms, you sat there next to todoroki. you didn’t know why he was there with you, one moment you were alone the next he was sitting with his legs crossed in front of him with the heels of his hands supporting his weight behind him.
“do you want me to tell you exactly what i do, or do you want me to tell you ‘i don’t know’?”
you smiled half heartedly and pulled your knees close to your chest. resting the side of your cheek on your knees so you would be facing him.
“tell me what you do.”
“well, sometimes i try to sleep, or i try to meditate.”
“you know damn well i can’t sit still for very long.”
he hummed in response and stayed quiet. the sigh you let go escaped your lungs when another soft breeze came rolling in. with your head now turned away from him, instead looking ahead of you, you sighed again.
“want to know what i do?”
“what do you do.”
for the third time you took a deep breath and exhaled while letting yourself fall back into the grass. looking up at the sky, you blinked.
“sometimes i let myself be miserable, feels like i deserve it.”
todoroki looked down at you, and laid down too.
“why would you ever think that?”
shrugging, you kept staring at the moving clouds above you.
“i don’t know what else to do.”
it stayed quiet between the two of you. the sounds of everyone else in the building surrounded the air, although it was faint. plant life rustling because of the wind, that’s all the sound there was.
“i think i know what else i like to do when i’m upset.”
todoroki’s voice broke the glass thin silence. you looked at him, grass scratching your ear now.
voice just above a whisper you asked,“what else did you think of?”
“i think i like being here with you.”

sephiroth does need glasses. everything is fine for him until it comes to him having to read. lots of things he can see without them otherwise. the main reason he doesn't wear them is because he can't stop seeing hojo in the mirror the few times he's required to wear them. lmfao. 😂😂😂

*glances at you before looking away* you can relax y'know, like you can put your feet up and actually make yourself comfortable. I'm not going to bite you or anything.

I hate it when our priest is indisposed because the vestry takes over (as they are supposed to and as our priest kind of pressures them into doing) but they absolutely shut me out of everything. Even the dedicated straight woman, who I had such a nice moment with Wednesday and I know wouldn’t want me feeling that way.
It’s like I am present and involved at every worship service but because I’m not on the vestry I’m just shunted to the side. And aside from the dedicated straight woman, who really takes on the brunt of the load, none of the others are consistently involved in anything. The senior warden won’t even lead the service Sunday.
I would do it in a moment but I’m not even considered because I’m not “lay leadership.” I just… do everything nobody else does all the time because our priest can count on so few others.
The thing that saves me is like, Thursday night at Centering Prayer I was sitting across from our priest in the circle and she just kept looking over in our conversation and connecting and so sincere about it that I can tell myself over and over, “I know she loves me; I know I matter; I know she loves me.”
But this kind of thing hits me right in the heart of all my insecurities, and it’s just like, okay, deep breaths and patience for as long as necessary until our priest is back in action and I matter again.

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

You guys rlly don't realise how much knowledge is still not committed to the internet. I find books all the time with stuff that is impossible to find through a search engine- most people do not put their magnum opus research online for free and the more niche a skill is the less likely you are to have people who will leak those books online. (Nevermind all the books written prior to the internet that have knowledge that is not considered "relevant" enough to digitise).
Whenever people say that we r growing up with all the world's knowledge at our fingertips...it's not necessarily true. Is the amount of knowledge online potentially infinite? Yes. Is it all knowledge? No. You will be surprised at the niche things you can discover at a local archive or library.
