I need to violently rant again and twitter limits my word rage.
I saw a TikTok and I couldn't even finish watching it cause I got angry -judge me if you want but do so silently- as I was severely disagreeing with just about everything I heard in the first 15 seconds.
Basically it was a TikTok about why the House of the Dragon dragons look different to Dany's dragons. And I don't care what the show runners said. I'm talking about this from a strictly biological point of view.
The Targaryen dragons are not domesticated. Basically the point of this person was that the Targaryen dragons in HotD are domesticated and Dany's dragons weren't. They looked different because they were hatched from fire and magic and fossilised before.
First of all, domestication. "Domestication is a sustained multi-generational relationship in which humans assume a significant degree of control over the reproduction and care of another group of organisms to secure a more predictable supply of resources from that group." [Zeder, M.A. (2015). "Core questions in domestication Research". Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America].
As underlined, multi generational is the key word here. Do you know why wolfdogs are only seen as dogs after a certain amount of generations without wolf blood in them? Because wolves are not domesticated, but dogs are. A wolf pup growing up with a human, however tame it may be, will never be a domesticated animal.
A wolf born and bred in captivity will never be domesticated. Dragons born and bred in captivity also doesn’t make them domesticated.
Domestication is breeding for specific traits you want in your animal over generations. Hunting dogs, sport horses, chickens bred for eggs or meat. It's selective breeding among other things (there is more to it of course).
First of all, imagine the difficulty of doing selective breeding with dragons. They live for hundreds of years, breeding goals would be incredibly hard to meet and no one human would probably achieve whatever mating goal they wanted.
Dragons generally seem to be picky about reproduction, don't grow well inside and are very hot tempered. People weren't even sure when a dragon was male or female, which means there could have not been selective breeding.
Not to mention the last dragon apparently laid a clutch of eggs, but had no mating partner, which opens more questions than it answers. Do dragons even need a mating partner? Is there only one dragon gender? Can they change genders?
They weren't even sure what made a dragon egg hatch, though we can assume some degree of magic was needed as dragons and magic are hinted to be connected multiple times throughout the series.
Also the fact that dragons didn't grow to their full size in captivity -which is untypical for domesticated animals*- would also have made selective breeding nigh impossible.
Also how would you even set that up? If a dragon doesn't want to, the death and destruction caused would be incredibly high and we know they're highly intelligent.
*since domesticated animals usually have better care and access to food all around they tend to be bred to be bigger, especially animals who are supposed to carry weights like horses (or dragons).
Domesticated animals also usually are bred to be nice to humans and live with them. While it's true the dragons in the dragon pit do seem tame, they are by no means friendly. Many a rider gets injured or killed when trying to bond with a dragon and the old Valyrian freehold was known to use dragon horns to tame their dragons which hints to the fact that their dragons also weren't domesticated.
Like sure the average dog needs training, but it’s supposed to be friendly from the get go. It’s not supposed to need extensive training to not be so aggressive to humans that it would fry them with fiery breath like dragons need to.
And if the dragons in the freehold weren't domesticated, the dragons Aegon the Conqueror brought with him weren't either and their eggs are the dragons we alive and well in HotD.
So, now that I wordily explained why the dragons aren't domesticated. Let's go on to the last statement: blood magic. Since this involves magic and I'm not a mage to my distress, this is very much what I think about the whole thing. My opinion with a bit of science sprinkled in.
Fossils hold DNA. Fossilised eggs can hold entire embryos, which I always assumed was what Dany's eggs were. Now also here eggs were said to be from the Shadow Lands beyond Ashai. It's entirely possible that when dragons still lived, the subspecies there was different than the dragons of the freehold.
So, I always assumed Dany's eggs had three fossilised dragons preserved inside. The eggs look like they're in pristine condition anyway and who knows what a not stone dragon egg even looks like? It's entirely possible that is what dragon eggs are supposed to look like or the eggs from Ashai look like that.
To note the dragon eggs we see in HotD look incredibly similar.
Fact is: I don't think Dany's dragons look different because they were born from magic. In my opinion that is bullshit. The magic revived the cells from the dragons that already were inside the eggs. It didn't just magic dragons into existence and made them look different. I don't know why that statement ticks me off so much, but it does.
The person also went on saying that we might see wild dragons and how different they look. Like all the 'wild' dragons we know off -except maybe the cannibal- were hatched from Valyrian eggs as far as I am aware. They didn't just spring into existence. There is no reason for wild dragons to look that vastly different to their 'domesticated' ridden counterparts.
I also want to point out that if the wild dragons hatched from valyrian eggs, they are actually half wild. Like the mustangs in the USA as opposed to the truly wild horses of mongolia. And in turn half 'domesticated' if they were domesticated that is.
Now that we covered that all, why do I think the dragons look different? Honestly, I just think the showrunners had fun and wanted to show that it is a different time with different dragons. They wanted to offer some excitement. I do not think there is a logical in world reason for the dragons to look that different.
If I had to make an assumption: as I said, Dany's dragons could be indeed a different subspecies. Next up: who says dragons don't naturally have a big genetic variation? Why do humans always act as if we have to be the only species with a huge genetic variation? Dragons could be just as versatile in genetics as we are.
Also as for Dragon designs we have seen in the show so far: Caraxes, Syrax and Seasmoke. Granted Caraxes looks very different, that could be a unique mutation or something less rare but since dragons live for so long it's hard to say how unique Caraxes really is. Like if Caraxes mutation happens ever other century or so it would be incredibly rare for humans but just the blink of an eye for a dragon.
Syrax: doesn't look that different, especially the tail is similar
Seasmoke looks from the silhouette almost exactly like Dany's dragons, again proving my point somewhere along the line up there.
In conclusion: Dragons weren't domesticated, magic didn't make Dany's dragons look different and with all likelihood the 'wild' dragons aren't actually wild.
Thank you for coming to my rant, I don't think anyone will read the entirety of it but it had to be said.
Of course, this is my opinion and if you don't agree please just fuck off, I'm not arguing about this.
If you want to discuss dragon genetics though, I'm all here for it.

people are so braindead for this. Jack Sparrow was fun in the early movies but he was NEVER the best part. Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth Swan? Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa?? Bill Nighy as Davy Jones?? my god
my apparently hot take is a pirates comeback movie would be so fun if it has the same overall vibes and an all new cast. just give us fun characters and action sequences and hans zimmer and we're good

Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest--
alright! so! early robin hood ballads and narratives don't have an origin story for little john, but a later ballad (robin hood and little john) does. they fight on a bridge in it, but I like looking at illustrations, so I've swapped out the bridge for that tree peaking out of the panel in the first panel bc I enjoy louis rhead's illustrations a lot.
this is some kind of introduction scene after they fight and climb out of the river!

genuinely what is the worst that could happen if you stop apologizing for liking homestuck or if you stop saying things like "homestuck is cursed don't read it it's so bad don't make the same mistakes as me save yourself while you can etc etc" when in actuality you enjoyed it. what's the worst that will happen if you just enjoy it like a normal person

I have a theory that the US education is designed to either:
1. Fail the majority of it's students
or
2. Make everyone who passes through the system a perfectionist

i can't believe the venice film festival is "trending" on this hellsite and not a single one of you is talking about brendan fraser getting a standing ovation before the premiere of his film followed by a six minute standing ovation afterward where he broke down in tears.
that man is to be treasured.
