I love how everyone looks so distinct and unique, and while very deliberately more bestial still are recognizable as Themselves, like still look like the actors that played them. Like how does a sketch of lizard garak at an angle that leans kind of shark-y look more like Andy Robinson than some pictures of Andy Robinson XD

Elanor: Probably an epic fantasy, or something from the 80s. Labyrinth is the first that comes to mind, but she'd be a hardcore fan of The Lord of the Rings as well. Her favorite character would be Aragorn and she would totally wear a necklace with the one ring unironically.

Kerry: Whatever makes him laugh and have a good time. Airplane or one of The Naked Gun movies would be good candidates. But also a "romantic flick with a twist" would do (catch him crying and fangirling @ Keanu Reeves in The Lake House). Also, Julia Roberts is totally a fave!

Ankh: Now, this you won't expect, but in the modern days AU I've written in my brain she's a huge fan of Ducktales. Like, she knows the lines and every episode by heart. She's obsessed with the old and the new series, but also with the Disney ducks in general, so much that she has a lot of first editions and multiple sketches signed by Don Rosa scattered around her house. Magica De Spell is her favorite villain, hands down. Movie wise, I'd say it's either Fantasia or Robin Hood. She's not a Disney adult even if she loves their brand of animation, but these are the movies she enjoys the most. "The snake speaks!! Lmao"

Len: Army of Darkness and Planet Terror are her favorite movies of all time. She's a sucker for a grotesque slasher with some comedy in it, she knows her tropes and when a movie has "horror" and "Bruce Campbell" in the mix she's sold instantly. The less quality FX the better!

I always admire the coloring/shading and stuff on the pieces you post on twitter, the stylized ones as well as the gorgeous painting-type ones (im asking abt the process cause idrk the specifics of what makes your drawings so good & I really want to learn, just started digital art and its always harder to parse out a digital artist's process/technique esp when its a fully-rendered piece). oh please share the magic efficient formula for making fucked up fantasy-fulfillment pornographic drawings :333

idk if tumblr will allow me to upload a nearly three minute video but here’s a decent recap of my general process for painterly pieces. i photobash or block in the pose that i want (which is industry standard and a common practice for illustrators, keep that in mind) and sketch out details, then paint underneath it and eventually merge everything into one layer so i can clean it up and finalize details. i also layer on a fuckton of filters and use lighting to my advantage. this is the method that works for me. i usually use medium airbrush for sketching, color flat medium for flat colors, and marker blocky smooth for painting from azzylum’s sai brush pack for procreate. i will also stress that i don’t really know what i’m doing and everything i’ve ever learned in digital art has been self-taught (digital art is so taboo in art school for a variety of reasons) and i struggle with it enormously and constantly even after having done it for years. it takes a lot of time!! be patient with yourself, do lots of studies, let yourself develop a style, and experiment with brushes 🫶 you’ll do great!!!

Sooooo, with the ideas I do have in mind atm, let's settle down which one I'm doing in another ~poll~ (I'll detail the ideas a bit more under the keep reading line, as usual)

Workaholic'o'clock - What I had in mind was like a GIF of Ryan just working at home and then slowly falling asleep. And since what I had in mind would be around 8 drawings, the style will be something like my chibi-esque style, but maybe even more simplistic.

Team PDM PMD redraw - Back when I watched the streams, Ryan was put on a racing team [for PDM] with Flippy, Izzy and Luther, and so I drew them as pokemon in a sort of PDM [Pokemon Mystery Dungeon] like team. Now tho' (from what I've read on the wiki), only two of them are in the same racing team [Ryan and Flippy], with one of them being in a different racing team [Izzy] and the last one being a... doctor [Luther]? Appearantly?? Idk, I just thought it would be funny to draw the three that are in a racing team heaving some [fake] beef with eachother, and then there's just a Weavile in a doctor's outfit lol

Shopping day w/ Cat and Paddy - Basically what it says. It would be in the chibi-esque style, Ryan would be wearing his "Girls' Night" outfit, I might make up an outfit for Cat, and then we got Paddy in a shirt + vest combo- who I'll probably draw carrying all the shopping bags and whatnot. If I'm able to, I'll hopefully draw a simple background or something qvq

How to Train Your [Car] Dragon - I've already drawn this idea a while ago, but that was a sketch. And also, Ryan has a fuckton of cars that I could turn into dragons. Like his war Banshee, the Primo, the GTR, the Drift Wagon (which was the one I previously drew as a dragon, but I wouldn't mind having another go at it), and the twink mobile Honda S2000. Although, if this one wins, I might have to make another poll to see which car I'm gonna turn into a dragon, 'cause I ain't drawing all of them o(-( Also, idk which style I would do with this one ajkhdfaksjhsfa

No Scrubs - Tldr; A moment I still remember fondly was of Ryan, Erin, Vivi and Luther- all but Vivi (I think) are drunk- walking down the street and singing "No Scrubs." And ofc, it would be in my chibi-esque style :]

Bookbinding with 'Junk' Leather: embossed landscape case binding

Here's a leather casebound book I made back in 2022!

Most of the leather I have is junk leather-- I exclusively buy is scrap leather. Most often, it's industry scraps from craft store scrap packs, or from the scrap bin from local leather stores. Occasionally I'll harvest the leather from an old clothes too.

I had a piece of otherwise beautiful undyed leather, large enough for a complete case binding, but it had massive, ugly, dark streaky stains on it. Here’s an awful photo of that:

Nonetheless, I wanted to challenge myself to use it. I think I had watched one-too-many kintsugi videos, and was really feeling the whole 'embracing beauty in the flaws' thing.

The design for this book started with the endpaper I wanted to use:

I bought this paper from a vendor at an antique book fair, I think I paid $12 for a 25" x 37" sheet. I just bought it because it looked cool, but I'm realizing as I write this, it's actually kyo-karakami. Unlike the chiyogami or katazome-shi mass produced today that you can find at most US-based paper suppliers, you can see that the print actually sits completely on top of the paper.

Here's a description from the Kyoto Artisans Concierge website of kyo-karakami:

Karakami paper that adorns Shinto shrines, Buddist temples and tearooms.

Simply put, Kyo-karakami is a type of woodblock print which uses printing blocks hand-carved on magnolia wood with traditional patterns passed down from ancient times. It is produced by a traditional method where coloring materials called kira (mica) and gofun (white pigment) are added to its surface, and the design is copied with the palm of the hand by overlaying it onto washi paper or torinoko (lustrous and smooth paper) one sheet at a time.

And here's a comparison in texture of chiyogami (left), which is silk-screened with pigment-based ink, and kyo-karakami (right):

Anyway, the design was cool, so I sketched up something (I guess the style would be 'nihonga', which literally just means classic Japanese painting) for the casing to match on chipboard, and carved it out with an exacto. Totally killed my wrists doing so.

I realized it'd look great to make the design raised across the spine, so I went with cord binding in spirit of such. Honestly, maybe it's because most of the bindings I do are on the thinner side, but I don't really see the need to have a frame when binding on cords or tape. I just kind of pull it taut as I go. Here’s the block and board being pressed (left) and the block block in the press after binding and end bands (right):

Now for the best part: adding the leather! My technique to getting all the embossed details is pretty standard, just plenty of glue, a fuckton of it in tightly detailed spaces so that the leather will adhere, and pressing it in with a bone folder.

From there, pretty standard encasement. I like to use linen as a backing material, it may be thicker and more visible behind the end paper, but it's way stronger than cardstock and looks fine as long as the edges are neat.

I honestly didn't consider the possibility of just staining the leather darker to get rid of the stains until a while after I had finished the project.

Here's the finished book! I really love how it turned out.

The Perks of Being Open-Source

As promised, here's something about the plug-ins for Stable Diffusion, the only AI image generator that's open-source, and makes for a great testbed for related research because of that.

The outcome of this research are various plug-ins and modifications that allow Stable Diffusion to do a lot of interesting things. And the authors? Hooboy, you would be surprised. It turns out that very serious companies, ones you would suspect of cooking their own tech of this kind on the side even if they haven't announced it publicly, build interesting things and share it for free.

Let's start with Semantic Segmentation. If an AI image generator makes images based on text input, Semantic Segmentation scans images, identifies elements and assigns text descriptions to them. A lot of serious companies have released open-source code of their implementation: you have Nvidia, Google, Meta and even Alibaba building that stuff. It might sound kinda underwhelming if fairly useful for helping visually impaired people (for example, Facebook uses it to generate alt texts for images posts automatically), but here's the kicker: Semantic Segmentation may be used in Stable Diffusion to automatically generate masks based on text description. Want to find a hand and redraw it to be more anatomically correct? Easy. How about changing the hair color without monkeying with it in Photoshop? Also easy. So easy that some basement-dwelling chud can script it to find the clothes on a woman and draw a nude body in their place (and did, and got himself in trouble when another teenage chud uploaded photos of girls from his class to the app).

Semantic Segmentation is the core of the popular Stable Diffusion extension called aDetailer: as I mentioned before, Semantic Segmentation can recognize what a hand is, even if it's distorted, and point the generator to inpaint a better version in its place. Same goes for the faces. And that's the two things aDetailer is built to fix.

Another thing are ControlNets: plugins that allow you to nudge the generation process a particular way, be it recreating the pose of a character down to hands and fingers (or just the face orientation and expression), following the outline of a sketch and filling in the details, even maintain perspective using depth maps. And then, based on that tech, you have PhotoMaker, created by Tencent's Applied Research Center, and its improved version, IP Adapter. The capabilities are impressive, particularly if you remember that a slightly outdated gaming PC can run Stable Diffusion at a decent pace with no need for an internet access, even with the plugins.

Also, with OpenAI's video generator Sora looming on the horizon, you should know that the first AI-generated (or at least redrawn) videos were created in Stable Diffusion as well. I don't intend to go down this rabbit hole for practical reasons (I have no need for using it for that particular purpose and my video card is a bit outdated), but it was on the sweaty basement-dwelling nerds to figure out how to fine-tune the whole thing to be consistent across a whole fuckton of frames, and they did it, the crazy sonsabitches.

So laugh all you want at the ornery, wobbly Stable Diffusion producing rounded, fractal blorps and fucky hands. Even basic capabilities like inpainting and outpainting still make Midjourney jealous, and if you look at the plugins, you can imagine a good few use cases you could never wring out of the competing algorithms - and run them on your own PC for free instead of relying on centralized black boxes with a monthly fee.

1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)

probably a touch of home (haikyuu), even though it's a little older now I feel like it's still a solid indication of the things I like exploring.

6. What’s one fact about the universe of [insert fic] that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?

ok I tried to sort of hint towards it in Integrated Circuit (dbz) but in the Good!Cell AU, Cell eventually ends up living in the ruined area of East City, which was never rebuilt after Nappa glassed it. He chooses there because after so many years, nature has started to retake the rubble, so it's a good mixture of civilization and wilderness: far enough out to be out of everyone's way, close enough to reach--because Trunks, in this universe, is best friends with and loves hanging out with Cell. It's like Piccolo and Gohan's relationship except Trunks is infinitely more of a troublemaker and absolutely thinks of himself as the big brother since he was technically born earlier.

21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in [insert fic], what would it be?

Obscure, but pretty much since I wrote it, I've lowkey toyed with the idea of fleshing out the implied sex in Numinous (one outs). Less obscure, in the moon in your mouth (bleach) there was meant to be a scene in the first chapter where Ichigo, per his promise to Grimmjow at the end of take hold of the sun, has to dissuade Orihime from healing the fuckton of bruises their fistfight left him with. I tried to write it like five times and I couldn't figure out a way to make it not ruin the pacing, so I cut it entirely and sort of obliquely referenced it in later chapters instead.

26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?

Years ago I had just finished FFXV and had been kind of on and off sketching out a dialogue only piece wherein Noctis converses with and eventually bitches out Bahamut for the shit deal he was given. It never came to be, but I still like it conceptually as a challenge I may later pick back up. At the end of the day I'm better at--because my writing style is more suited to--no dialogue fics.

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

you will all read the water cycle (bleach) if it's the last thing I do. I can't really explain what I like so much about it, just that every time I look at it I'm like yeah that one was good.

1- Your go-to comfort subject to draw

I guess it depends! When I have a rough time drawing I typically don't force myself to. But recently every now n then I do a little Dango sketch here n there or the fuckaroos in various scenarios (Mint, Chili and Tai)

2- Does your art suit your aesthetics

HMMM. This is a hard one. What ARE my aesthetics.... Do we mean wardrobe? Do we mean colour choices? Do we mean subject?

Im still figuring out my wardrobe. I dont get out as much as Id like to so theres a lot missing or overstocked. My room is a chaotic mess of *things*. Theres vulture culture and terrariums and figurines and plushies and a fuckton of art. So I guess it could be chaos? Is my art chaos? I dunno!

Theres a lot of different types of aesthetics I like out there and I absolutely dont stick to just one type of artstyle either. Just because Im doing a lot of simplified cartoony bugs right now doesnt mean Ill do that forever from now on.

I think it kind of depends on my mood of my current gig too. Mostly working in cartoons rn, but last year when I was working on a semi realistic short it absolutely influenced my motivation to work on semi-realistic stuff and expand on my alien world.

So I think 'aesthetic' is a very fluid part of me and my art!
