analyzing some images (for fun)

so i found this pair of promotion images for good omens season 1 on the good omens reference library server and it’s hooked me so so bad im having feelings about it. we’re analyzing them now. not really for meta purposes just fun to see the parallels and differences :)

everything under the cut !

unique traits

aziraphale:

1) his plank background. its older, its crisp, it smells like wood from the screen. mmmm

2) the pencil shavings at the bottom. he does a lot of writing honestly, so i like this. also adds a messy and cozy vibe he always seems to have in that shop…. i like that blessed shop fr

3) his SUSHI. little soy sauce drops near it too—just the right amount of deliberate mess. our first formal introduction to aziraphale in the present day and beginning the Tomfoolery just happens to have sushi... i watch that scene and i go “yeah, that sums up aziraphale i suppose” very nicely. (they dont have sushi Up There) (im literally never gonna forget that)

4) the ray of light shining on the scene. tiny thing, but a bit of the heaven is peeking through..it also sort of blurs the whole image but i think thats just me.

5) and we’ve saved the best for last: the big whopper. the nice and accurate prophecies of agnes nutter, witch. I LOVE THAT BOOK!!!!!!! i cant remember if that ring stain was there but if it isnt in the show on the actual book i’d assume thats to add that ‘thy cocoa doth grow cold’ thing. ALSO. you know what’s being used as a bookmark in the pages?? a check for the ritz. he bookmarked their one chance for living . with a ritz check . MMMMMM. my GOD. that means so much to me even if i cant convey it in words. he KEEPS THE CHECKS 😭😭😭😭😭😭

crowley:

1) let me get my favorite out of the way. crowley’s glasses have fire in their reflection. we’ll talk about the glasses themselves later but the REFLECTION IN THEM. fucking FIRE, BOOKSHOP fire, PAIN, SRIVING THROUGH THE M-25, HELL, I DONT KNOWIM HAVING FEELINGS!!! i do believe this is a bookshop fire reference though, the flames feel too Familiar. the lengths people will go to to attack others 🤧

2) the leather seat background!!!!!!! probably meant to look similar to the bentley’s seats but i cant recall their texture, exactly. maybe just meant to convey modernness—unsure. still, its there <3

3) the tiny little crisp plant </3 its trying his damned best to stay perfect. it might a specific plant that means something, but i cant tell at thsi angle, so i’ll assume its a mini version of the ficus he keeps in the flat. its so SMALL and sitting in ANOTHER POT i CANT

4) the snake slithering!! black and red (in this image it looks orange lol) bellied scales!!!! slithering there, chilling, being crowley, showing hints. love it

5) QUEEN RECORD!!!!! TRYING TO OVERRIDE IT WITH TCHAIKOVSKY!!!!!! the tape over it does a reminisence to crowley’s handwriting, but in a clean ‘this made made to be a font’ way. not exactly just yet. ive become a fan of tchaikovsky recently. amazing darling wonderful crowley, trying to push the rock up the hill for eternity 😞

6) HIS LITTLE DEMON KEY THING. HOLDING A TINY LITTLE BENTLEY CAR KEY OHHH. thats how he doesnt lose the tiny key despite probably not needing one of those. and he CHOSE that intentionally probably. little wings and red circle….URGHHHHHHH

similarities

mmmmm now here’s the good shit. similarities! i’ll bullet point most of them but ohhhhh. ohhhh these. i’ll go from top to bottom as best i can….

1) one of their shoes, obviously. crowley has them iconic snakeskin shoes while aziraphale has his old loafers like the old loafer he is /pos

2) chateauneuf de pape wine bottle labels! (crowley’s is under his glasses, aziraphale’s is next to his shoe). oh my fucking god theyre MATCHING. the labels are old, battered, of course labeling the drink’s age, but mmmmm its these tiny details that get me going….

3) their respective drinks in their mugs—crowley’s a black mug coffee (or what looks to be coffee) and aziraphale’s angel mug tea (or what looks to be tea). i think about that mug sometimes. where did he get that from?? mystery for the ages….

4) their glasses, of course. crowley’s iconic sunglasses and aziraphale’s reading spectacles. i cant really tell the reflections in this pair, but if its supposed to be fucking fire, im done with this. im giving up forever

5) their own watches! aziraphale’s is visibily older while crowley’s is visibly modern, but they function just the same. also, crowley’s is set to 2:56:59 (presumably PM), which is around the time we see when crowley starts checking his watch at warlock’s birthday party. its almost time for disaster to strike!! 😃

6) and finally….their ties!! they have their own ties!!! or more accurately, neck accessories, but i digress. i mesn i assume its crowley’s neck tie, because the fabric looks… different. either way, crowley’s neck thingie is very whispy and aziraphale has his funky little bowtie i love so much,,,

okay thats it. there’s no canonical implications, any fantheories, none of the sort. just saw a pair of images and my mind went GOD DAMN!!!!!! theyre very important to me. i need to look at more promo material 😔

Ive come to the realization that the reason theres a small but loud group of people who are showing nothing but hate for the rwrb movie is because they have completely unrealistic expectations. People are forgetting that this is a cheesy romantic comedy, thats supposed to look and feel like a cheesy romantic comedy. This isnt going to be moonlight or gods own country or some other critically acclaimed, oscar nomintaed queer film that makes straight people go "hmm maybe they do deserve rights and respect🤷‍♀️"

Its gonna be a cheesy adult romantic comedy, thats gonna be a bit camp and over the top and thats exactly why its so good. I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch. I want to watch it and see two queer people fall in love and thats it. Thats how deep it goes. Maybe a sprinkling of politcal commentary in between.

There is this issue thats become bigger and bigger every passing year, that people expect every bit of queer representation to be the best thing ever. There can not ever be anything cringey or different or silly, and if it is then they send endless hate towards it, and in an industry that already hates to show queer people on screen, its this viscious cycle of someone finally being greenlit to make queer media, the media gets endless hate for not being perfect, the studio cancels the queer media before giving it a chance because theyve just 'proven that it wont make money', suddenly everyone is saying 'why do they keep canceling queer media😢', cycle repeats.

Im so over it. Let gay people be slightly cringy or cheesy or campy. Let queer media exist without putting it on this huge pedestal. Just enjoy things! And if you dont, dont watch it! Move on, find something better to do.

I want light-hearted rom coms about queer adults just being queer adults and havig fun. I want comedy adventures where the characters just happen to be gay. I want more horror where at the end the final girl kisses a girl and can't belive they lived but not because they're gay. (suprisingly several of these exist and I love it)

I don't always want to think about the plight and horrors of being queer today with every queer movie I watch.

Sometimes, yes of course, I want to be seen on that level.

(Nimona, which came this weekend is a perfect example of a queer movie where I felt very very seen but also had a good time and was an incredibly silly fantasy adventure movie. But, still had the queer expereince intertwined.)

I'm looking forward to a movie that will be 90% rom com, and 10% realism/heavyness. re: being outed is a real thing that happens to people. famous people.

Alex and Henry go through some heavy shit. There's seriously traumatizing stuff at the end of the book. They're both dealing with mental illnesses, complex families, and rock-or-a-hard-place situations. I want all of that honored.

And, at the same time, I'm expecting a straight-to-streaming, mid-budget, movie that had to pass through a LOT of straight hands and board meetings to get to us.

Not to say we should love and accept every queer movie that comes out automatically, they have been done wrong in the past. (example: I skipped call me by your name bc the age gap still makes me too uncomfortable to watch)

But we have to give queer movies a chance to fit the genre they were made for, the tone they are made to be, and give queer creators a chance to show they are us annd they know us. The director is Bi. He's spent so much time going on about how much he related to Alex that he needed to make this movie. It's his first directing role, and I'm giving him a chance.

oh yeah btw i went into the city with my sister today and it was a very nice day :) i'm now going to tell you all about it bc i need to learn to be more positive. also, i will add random photos from pinterest so this post looks mildly interesting

here i go:

- first we watched an anzac day march (i live in australia, yeah. idrm u guys knowing that. basically anzac day is a day where we show respects to soldiers who fought in the war/s) for a whole hour (yeah... it was very tiring but atleast all we had to do was sit and watch. its not exactly hard i suppose)

- then, we went to a cafe where we drank iced matcha latte and shared a chocolate cake slice. the cafe was so cozy and it had jaz music and it was dark wood + green + overgrown vines type of vibe :)

- then, we went to....

drumroll please

a second hand bookstore !!!

*dies, comes alive, dies, comes alive* (x4)

there were a million books in there (or so the sign at the front claimed) and it was such a lovely place

it smelled like old books. i nearly suffocated because the smell was so strong (but i didnt mjnd at all ofc)

in the back, there was a big space with no shelves and a few tables and chairs to sit and read (i assume?) (tho there were still shelves along the wall)

in the front+middle, there were shelves everywhere, with only space for 2 people in between each shelf

it was very cluttered. i struggled to understand the system because many shelves were unlabelled, but i think that adds to the charm and i loved having to look through all the shelves

at the very front, there is the cash register and a bunch ( a BUNCH) of book stacks on the floor with no price (bc the owner hadnt priced the books yet. the shop is personally owned and they price books by writing it in pencil on the first page. isnt that so charming??)

the books werent insanely cheap, but its a food place to fins different/collectable covers of certain books

i saw a red hardbound version of dead souls by nikolai gogol, which i was going to get bc i really want to read that, but it was falling apart so badly (like the spine was 4/5 off the book) that i felt like it was unwise to purchase haha :,)

in the end, i didnt get to look at everything bc my sister got restless but i did manage to buy 3 books that i am very happy abt:

1. "the adventures of tom sawyer" by mark twain :) this was 7.50 and it had a really pretry cover (also it was small sized, which i think is so charming and pocketable)

2. "the tenant of wildfell hall" by anna brontë. i have read none of the brontë sisters' works, but i really want to:) this was also only 7.50 and the cover was pretty, and it was also pretty small

3. "quiet" by susan cain. it seems so interesting and it was only $10, whereas its going for $20 on amazon 💀 :)

also the owner gave me a bookmark that looked old and it was beige + black and it had the shop name on it, contact info, promo stuff but also it was so cool bc the font was fancy and there was an olden day sketch of an oldman reading to a child in the middle of the bookmark :)

also the owner was a nice and chill old man. also there was classical music !

i cant wait to revisit that store :) i will be opting to purchase all of my classics there because they have covers that ive never seen before.

OK SO LIKE . that definitely wasnt a dream and we all agree on that right . right .

i absolutely think that that is exactly what the feds want us to think . the birdhouse was a dream . the book ( " a crow's dream " . it feels purposeful , they WANT us to use that as proof ) , the armor and the weapons and the journey and chayannes floatie still in the heart of the maze while also somehow being in the birdhouse . the cage was never real . OR WAS IT . walk with me .

we start from mexican independence day in eggs garden bedroom . phil goes to sleep and then wakes up with the lore screen to go off on his fucked up unreality adventure . when he comes BACK today , he starts in lore mode and only leaves it when the next fed cutscene forces him to and subsequently - he seems entirely unaffected by the events beforehand until he goes searching for the birdhouse again with tubbo later on . its not there and theres no real proof it ever was , so that means it wasnt right ? WRONG .

we already know that the feds can fuck with the island physically . back at the start of the server when both sides of the wall were populated with abandoned buildings that slowly disappeared as time went on , all of the event builds that showed up seemingly out of nowhere , the presidential office , you get me right . the feds can change the island however they want and they do exactly that with the birdhouse , deleting the chest and replacing the trapdoor to his sub-basement , and even changing the contents of the book .

not to mention the fact that they can Edit your fuckin inventory !!!! tubbos stream from the other day literally proves that when cucurucho was tailing him for like a solid hour and spent even longer yoinking a book from his inventory and changing the text inside . the feds gave phil all his shit back and teleported him right back to where he found that damn crows dream book . speaking of . when he woke up He wasnt in the chair . i know he said he mustve sleepwalked but we dont believe that right ? if everything from him waking back up after " ending stream " to waking up today wasnt real then how did he even get down there ? easy . The trapdoor was broken . are you still walking .

heres how it goes ok . they lure phil to the middle of fucking nowhere . they lock him up with his missing ( and potentually dead ) kids clothes and leave him there for a week . a cage for a cage . a lesson . phils been a functionally neutral party up till the lavacast ( i know he isnt actually neutral . my point is that he hadnt gone against the fed in any serious way up until the eggs went missing ) and the MOMENT he puts himself out there as a threat to the fed and their goals , they put a target on him . that supposed Dream sequence is them shooting him in the head and then slapping a bandaid on the bleeding wound by setting it up as if it were a dream . but they KNOW hes smart enough to question that and thats EXACTLY what they want .

they want him compliant and scared !!!! they WANT him to question if it was real or not - if he goes against the federation again , will he go back to that birdhouse ? and even if it WAS a dream , will he wake back up in there when he goes to bed tonight ? does that mean that the dream itself was created by the federation ? or was it really just a nightmare fueled by grief and paranoia ? cucurocho is the one who trapped him and the one who set him free after all .

i dont really think that taking phil at his word is the move here because theres a big chance of him being an unreliable narrator . the situation is easy enough to write off as a dream but suspicious enough to question . i mean . how would a crows dream still be in that chest otherwise ? we saw on bads stream yesterday when he broke into phils basement that everything was just as it was before , and that a crows dream was IN that chest before phil got back . it was a SETUP !!!! IT WAS A SETUP AND PHIL FELL FOR IT !!! ( JUST LIKE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO )

maybe it was drugs or maybe it was hallucinations from prolonged isolation . maybe it was the feds beaming a fuckin cutscene into his head WHATEVER . the birdhouse was real , phils entrapment was real and he is inhaling some EXTREME copium right now . get therapy dickhead . not at roiers place though hell probably just tell you to have more gay sex or something ( itd help but not as much as you might think )

tldr i think the feds are doing some cocomelon shit to phil and hes fallen for it completely

About the courier thing. I looked at the Lufthansa website would you recommend it if someone had never flown before? Like I'd need to get a passport for this, only traveled by car/ ship so far.

About picking the deliveries up and delivering them, if I live in town A and the company is in City B do I have to go there to pick it up? Will it be at the airport? Bc the website made it look like you get the message that they need you, then you basically that instant jump in your car drive to the company drive to the airport and jump into the plane, land jump into a taxi and go to the place you need to be.

My concerns are that I'll only get reimbursed for things like the taxi bc they need me to have an international CreditCard... Could you describe how tight these times are? Like what happens if I don't have the time to catch the booked flight bc they booked it too tightly for it to be realistic?

When I land in other countries, what exactly is common place there? Will I be expected and picked up or will I have to find a taxi to the company myself?

If there isnt an instant flight back, do they pay/book or only reimburse you for finding a hotel/ hostel? What happens if you miss your flight back?

You can probably tell lol but I'd be interested but I'm pretty anxious about all the stuff they don't specify on their website. Like I'm not willing to risk having to pay for a flight back home from the US because there was a traffic jam and I missed my booked flight

Also, talking about safety lol, would you recommend this to a woman? The people that left glowing reviews about how great the job is only had masculine names afaik.

And do they give you the info you need for the countries you travel to? Like if I, as a woman, would travel to a country that requires me to wear something to hide my hair would they tell me that? Or would uncultured little ol' me have to frantically google what kinda clothes I would be able to wear? And what kinda attire would they expect at the companies you're supposed to deliver to? Like if I look like shit after a 10 hour flight and deliver a contract or a designer dress they aren't gonna kill me right?

Also the website said to always have a light bag ready which is fair but if I show up with a small case that I wouldn't be able to take with me to my seat are they gonna say I'm taking too much time while I wait for my baggage?

Hello! Thank you for reaching out. I am going to try and answer these questions to the best of my ability, but I've only flown two missions and both were the same company and destination, so I am not an expert on this.

You'd definitely have to get a passport. I don't know if I'd recommend it because I don't know you personally. I flew for the first time when I was two and flew alone for the first time when I was five. I lived abroad for a while and had to fly back and forth between semesters. I know my local airport like the back of my hand and feel pretty comfortable flying. OBC missions can be really stressful, and never having flown before could add to that stress. On the other hand, maybe you thrive under that stress. Maybe it can be an adventure.

The pickup location can differ afaik. I had to pick up the cargo both times at a company close to the airport but I've also heard of cases where the cargo is in a different city and you're supposed to pick it up or where it is picked up at the airport. Same for the drop off. Both of my missions were airplane parts so my drop off was outside the airport. I heard that occassionally you'd have to take a taxi to some company but they would tell you about the drop off location or at least whom to contact once you land. International airports always have taxis outside and usually public transport so you should be fine as long as you have an address. You have to be flexible. The timing is also different. I once had to cancel a request because they wanted me to be in Hamburg within an hour (the high-speed train alone takes longer than an hour). Yesterday I got the message in the early afternoon and the flight was in the evening so I had time to prepare. You don't have to answer requests if you don't have time or think you can't manage the pickup time. They usually message everyone on their list who lives in a certain radius and then whoever answers first and can do it gets the mission. If you're on a mission and something goes horribly wrong, I guess you have to contact the company and sort it out together with them. I have no idea how that works because that never happened to me luckily. I only accept missions that I think are realistic and I guess if I were to miss a plane or connection they'd have to rebook me since I am the one with the cargo and finding someone else that late in the process would be even more expensive? I don't know what happens if you miss your flight back and I assume it depends on if it is your fault or something unforseen.

About the money thing I think it depends on the company again. I flew with Wings Onboard the last two times and they book your flight and hotel so you only need to cover things like transport, roaming, excess baggage if it comes up. Having a visa card or similar is really important for this and also having a little money on it for emergencies. For example, I paid 80 Euro for taxis plus 130 for excess baggage this time that I will get reimbursed. Last time I only paid like 2 Euro for a parking ticket and that was it. You need to be prepared for emergencies but you should get everything but food reimbursed.

About the gender thing, I am seen as a woman and I am pretty short and I did not accept a mission last time because I felt uncomfortable flying to that country at night. In general, it can be dangerous as a woman everywhere so take the normal safety precautions and listen to your intuition if something seems dangerous. Other than safety, being a short female-perceived person has its upsides because my cargo was 30kg and men helped me carry it lol.

I received no cultural insights like that but I also flew to my neighbouring country so I don't know if they would tell you. I'd google just in case. What they will tell you however, at least Wings does, is if there is any visa or customs regulations you need to be aware of, which I think is even more vital. About clothes in general, since it is pretty spontaneous missions no one minded so far that I was wearing jeans and t shirts. Most of them never had to deal with OBCs so they are mostly just curious. You're not technically employed by them, you're just delivering something, and they care a lot more about the cargo than you.

I always have a little backpack packed, which is more practical than a case, because it can fit under your seat or in the overhead compartment. The important part is that it is small enough to be counted as hand luggage for most major airlines. If you have cargo that counts as hand luggage you can take it with you and maybe fit it in the bag. If the cargo is large enough for checked baggage you still have your essential things with you and can grab them quickly without having to wait for them too. The company will book your flight for you and will opt for the cheapest option, which is usually economy with either only hand luggage or hand luggage and one piece of checked luggage. As long as you have your phone, charger, money, passport, perhaps a pyjama and toothbrush and empty water bottle you should be fine.

In general, it can be stressful and you have to be flexible and spontaneous when things go wrong, but the past two missions I noticed that a courier is already so much cheaper and faster for them that small delays don't matter. I hurried so much to check out my cargo and go to the drop off point and when I called them they were like "both our cars are busy right now, it will take maybe 15 minutes" and then took over 30 minutes to arrive. As long as you make the flight and the cargo is safe they don't care if you took five minutes longer to find the exit or went to the bathroom. Five minutes longer still beats the time or money they'd have to put into other logistics solutions.

i know t&b doesnt make it fully clear whether yuri petrov actually has a scar on his face or not but to say its impossible is because people have a limited idea of what burn scars can look like and how they may be treated or covered up.

the way its portrayed and the initial injury itself operate on looser logic than in real life (due to the length of time mr. legend held onto his face) but its possible for him to have a burn scar on his face and still retain his eyesight, hair, and eyebrows.

the clear shape of a hand and the way it cuts through his perfectly-preserved eyebrows are obviously fictionalized, but given that he already has superpowers, i think his scar being slightly unrealistic isnt an issue or proof that it only exists in his mind as a form of trauma.

from the colour and texture given to the scar, we can adhere that its a hypertrophic scar: the skin has thickened, raised from the unaffected skin, and turned purplish as part of the healing process.

the portrayal of scars in media isnt exactly good and different disfigurements people can go through are often portrayed only in very specific manner and often in a very bad light, but theres nothing inherently ugly, scary or wrong about having facial disfigurement.

hypertrophic scars can look very different depending on the person and the severity of the initial burn. heres a real-life person whose scar, in my opinion, has a similar quality to it as yuris does.

ive cropped the image because even if its censored, i dont feel comfortable using someones real face on a tumblr post about a fictional character.

even if yuris scar is fictionalized, i think its clear what its supposed to represent. i also think the way its portrayed was specifically chosen to pursue a certain aesthetic/conventional beauty standard, which is disappointing but nothing unusual in media.

im of the opinion that the initial portrayal of his scar in the anime and various panels in the manga shows that it was supposed to be real, even if later material has now displayed it suddenly appearing/disappearing.

its also entirely possible to cover it with makeup. many people with different kind of facial disfigurement make content on the topic! this article links to some youtubers with facial disfigurement who create makeup videos.

might have more thoughts to add to your drag essay later but for now Big Yes ++ i also have been thinking about the way that Archetypes have been a throughline in basically all of gerard's art, from mcr's concept albums through (what i have seen of) his comic stuff and earlier illustrations and now very vividly in these tour costumes. which to me feels drag-adjcacent, so much of drag culture is about appropriating and camping up (pointing at, exaggerating, making absurd, celebrating) pop culture figures & cultural icons/archetypes. gerard's 2022 costumes are doing the appropriating but not so much the camping, with the exception of the casino king moment -- but camp has been such an important factor in almost all of mcr's history before this (whole books could be written about this). i'd say the black parade look at its peak with all of its liza/fosse influence was Bandleader Drag moreso than the cheerleader look was Cheerleader Drag despite the apparent crossdressing-ness of the latter. yknow?

this is from 21 days ago!!!!! im here now. this is exactly my point. the art form of drag is marked by exaggeration of gender presentation, which is often represented by pop culture figures because they are the arbiters of iconized (ie dramatized ie context-divorced ie CAMPY) femininity or masculinity. people do drag of celebrity performers like elvis or liza, archetypes like construction workers or show girls. one part of drag i didnt talk about is its appropriation of beauty standards -- breast enhancers, faux abs, accentuated glam make-up. there is no focus on beauty in gerard's 2022-23 costumes (are they costumes?) as ive said, theyre casual clothes. it cant be drag. the presentation isnt about accentuation, it's about something else.

it's fun that this point has been further proven by how nonchalant the office worker was. the drama wasnt in the outfit, it was in the gore. there's nothing gendered there. though someone who is typically seen as a man donning female conservative wear and therefore twisting that descriptor is interesting in of itself (as spittingout said)!!!! office drag makes fun of hyperfeminine conservativism. as casual clothes, the effect is different. the subtlety positions these outfits as normal -- which they are.

a while ago i wrote about how critics used the word "camp" incorrectly to detract from my chem being unironically good. i dont like the piece today. i honestly didnt realize that a lot of mcr music is enjoyed for its drama more than its content. my penchant for sincerely consuming everything blinded me. but i do like my classic approach to what makes camp camp -- how it's an intellectual's hidden gem, not something intended. i applied that to how ppl didnt understand the nonconforming looks of my chem past, making the looks camp objects (meaning objects that are highly dramatic because of their lost meaning).

these campy looks include the bandleader persona. the look is gendered by gerard's stage attitude -- the brooding, the aggression, the boxy stature. though the hair and clothing are non descript, they're read as masculine -- the idea that the lack of gender indicates masculinity is a big gender theory topic. even when the original hairstyle is a feminine pixie and the black parade jacket has a corset back, the fact they are, respectively, short and suit-like lands further from feminine readings. SOOOOOOOOOOO all this to say the bandleader is an exaggeration of agender-practically-masculine archetypes like fosse's emcee (a clown doing showman drag, doing showgirl drag, doing fash drag -- more likely to be read as masculine over feminine despite the make-up because clowns are agender, which we know as functionally masculine). wipes brow

another point u didnt talk about but just thought of. INTERESTING that the use of the word "drag" in three cheers ("they make me do push-ups in drag") is obviously synonymous with cross-dressing cuz it's supposed to be embarrassing, while the use of "drag" in black parade ("here's my resignation ill serve it in drag") is closer to the art form or at least empowered cross-dressing. also a fun pun! serve 👨‍💼 and serve 💅

Httyd book character's ages throughout the series

Alright like i had mentioned i wanted to make a post about different characters ages at different times

And thats what this is

It's going to be Hiccup, Fishlegs, and Camicazi of course, as well as a few other character

BUT before we can get into their ages, we first have to establish a timeline

So im going to go over the Illogical Timeline, where it comes from and why its wrong, some of the contradictions in the books, what the Most Likely Timeline is, and finally the ages

Putting this under a cut cause it might be a long post lol

Also theres spoilers so

Anyways moving on

First up, the Illogical Timeline

This is based only on dates and time frames established in the books, ignoring Hiccup's age except at the very beginning

A lot of this is still True in the Most Likely Timeline, really the only things that arent are the Months that the Books take place and Hiccups Age

Now where these come from

In Book 1, when they've regrouped after the dragons woke up, Gobber says Hiccup is '10 1/2' But because it takes place in January, Hiccup would have to be almost 11, so most likely Gobber just meant he was in-between 10-11

We know the book starts in January because

A: the dragons are in their last few weeks of winter hibernation

B: Toothless wakes up 3 weeks after Hiccup gets him, and after he's been awake for a bit its Mid-February

We're also told that 'February turned into March, March into April, and April into May'

So therefor book 1 would take place between the months of January - May

This would make Hiccup is 11 years 3 months old at the end of the book ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now book 2, we're told takes place one month later, the story itself says this as well as Snotlout, so its now into June

The events take place over approximately 3 weeks, meaning at the end its likely early July

This would make Hiccup would be 11 years 5 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 3 has to take place at least 3 months later, because Alvin says he spent 3 months climbing through Caliban Caves

But in book 4, they say that they ran into a Vorpent a couple months ago, and thats how long the symptoms take to show themself

So book 3 would likely take place 6 months later around December

Saturn's Day Saturday is in about 2 weeks

We get time frames around Camicazi's escape plans for how exactly long they were there

It says that for her first plan she spent '3 nights' throwing a fish out the window

Her second plan she spent '4 days' tunneling

After her third escape plan she's put into solitary confinement for '3 days'

And she returned 'the day before' Saturday

Which all adds up to them being there for 12 days 11 days of escape attempts and 1 day of the actual event

All this would make Hiccup 11 years 10 months old at the end of the book --------------------------------------------------------------------------

As i said book 4 takes place a couple months later, around the end of winter, so itd be somewhere around mid-March most likely

The events of the book take place over 24 hours

This would make Hiccup a little over 12 years old already

Which isnt supposed to happen for 2 more books So something got a little messed up somewhere, like i said ill explain the Most Likely Timeline later but first lets just get through this one -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now Book 5 takes place in August, it says this at the very beginning of the book, so about 5 months after the last book

The events take place over a couple weeks, so ending mid-to-late August

This would make Hiccup 12 years 6 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 6 takes place on February 29th, 6 months later

The events of the book take place over a single day, and seeing as its Hiccups Birthday, this would make Hiccup 13 years old at the end of the book

So we're about a year ahead of schedule -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 7 takes place in spring, says it at the first sentence of chapter 1, most likely in late March So about a month after the last book

The events take place over the course of a bit more than 3 months, ending in June

This would make Hiccup 13 years 4 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 8 takes place in Midsummer, probably around August, a couple months after last book

It takes place over a couple days

This would make Hiccup 13 years 6 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 9 takes place at least a year later, because at the end of book 8 Furious says he'll give the humans 1 year

But because Book 9 takes place over the last 3 weeks of the year, it has to be closer to one year 4 months later

Which does make sense, because Hiccup just says 'the year passed' not one year ago or anything like that

Like i said it takes place over the last 3 weeks of the year, ending January 1st

This would make Hiccup 14 years 10 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 10 takes place 12 months or 1 year later, in January

I believe some books say it was only 6 months later but that doesnt add up with books 11 and 12

If it were only 6 months later that would lead to Doomsday happening in the Summer, around July, which we know isnt the case

Everything taking place a year later does add up though, at least approximately,

Again, this is all for later

Anyways the events of Book 10 take place in about 3 or 4 days

This would make Hiccup 14 years 10 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 11 takes place a month later, around the beginning of February

The entirety of books 11 and 12 take place over the same few days

This would make Hiccup 15 years 11 months old at the end of the book -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 12 is probably not even 24 hours after book 11 and lasts like 12 hours

This would make Hiccup 15 years a bit more than 11 months old at the end of the book and series

This also would mean Doomsday takes place in February which doesnt add up to me --------------------------------------------------------------------------

And thats it for the Incorrect Timeline

Like i said its obviously not right

If Cressida had made Hiccup 15 in the last book and not 14, it all would have been right on target But i think she just didnt think too much about the specifics of the dates she gave, particularly early on on the series

Theres also a possibility that she had originally intended for book 6 or whatever to be Hiccup's 13th birthday, since turning 13 is usually a big deal And then when she decided Hiccups birthday was on a Leap Year she changed it to being his 12th birthday instead

But we'll never know unless she says something or if she somehow sees this post and decides to comment lol

Anyways now onto The Most Likely Timeline of events

So for the Most Likely Timeline the most important book is Book 6

To figure out times and ages for books 7-12 you work forward from book 6 and for books 1-5 you work Backwards Im sure you could do it other ways as well but thats what i did -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 1

I know that at the beginning Gobber says Hiccup is 10 1/2 but thats impossible

Considering it takes place between early January - May, Hiccup would have to have had a birthday, not an Official Birthday™ of course, but he had to age

In order for Hiccup to be 12 years old in book 6, he has to turn 10 in the February of book 1

This would make Hiccup 10 years 3 months old at the end, and only 9 years around 10 months old at the very beginning of the book and the series -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 2 takes place one month after book 1, putting it in June

This would mean Hiccup was 10 years 4 months old at the end of book 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now Book 3 is a bit odd, it has to take place at least three months after book 2, but also 'a couple months' before book 4

I know a couple usually means 2, but I think it was closer to 4ish months People often seem to misuse 'a couple' when they really mean 'a few' so its not unlikely

Because i think book 4 takes place in February this would mean book 3 takes place in October, or 4 months after book 2

Now its important that its in October because

A: That give Alvin the 3 odd months to get out of the Caliban Caves and a few weeks to figure everything out with the Romans

B: 4 months after June would mean the book can start Mid-October and end late October

Why is late October important?

Well, this is why:

There was a Roman Holiday that took place at the end of October

And from a couple sites that explain what it was:

Essentially at the end of October the Romans had a holiday of Games to celebrate some War and the Goddess of Victory

In book 3 the Saturn's Day Saturday Games were themed around The Survival of the Fittest

Games celebrating winning a war and the Goddess of Victory A Games Event called Survival of the Fittest Survival of the Fittest, whoever's best will win Similar to a War, the best army will be Victorious

Im sure yall see what im getting at lol

While i dont know that Cressida put that much research into Roman holidays just to link one up with her fiction book event it would make sense

The theming would make sense, as well as why the Romans were just randomly having some Big Event

Anyways all this would make Hiccup 10 years 8 months old at the end of book 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 4 takes place at the end of winter, and like i said most likely mid-late February, about 4 months after book 3

So Hiccup would have been a little under 11 years old ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 5 takes place in August

In the prologue Hiccup says he was 11 years old, so he has to be at least 11

August is 6 months away from February So it makes sense for Hiccup to be 11 1/2 at the end of book 5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Book 6 is handy for both the timeline and the ages because we get an Exact Date and Age

We know Hiccup is 12 on February 29th ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 7 is in the Spring so probably around a month after book 6, early April seems perfectly reasonable

It lasts a bit over 3 months, probably ending in July

This would make Hiccup about 12 years 5 months old ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Book 8 is in MidSummer

The official midpoint of summer is August 7th, so it likely takes place sometime in August, about a month after book 7

This would make Hiccup 12 1/2 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Book 9 takes place at least a year after book 8, but it has to be over a year because book 8 is set in summer and book 9 is the end of the year

So its probably somewhere around 1 year 4 months later

Which, as i said in the Incorrect Timeline, makes sense because Hiccup says the year passed , and also that he thought Furious might have forgotten If it had just been a year , it would be odd for Hiccup to assume he forgot, but if a few more months had passed it would indeed seem as though Furious had forgotten what he had said

So 1 year 4 months makes sense

This would make Hiccup 13 years 10 months old ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Book 10 is a year after book 9, but it would make more sense if it took place a little less than a year, somewhere around 11 1/2 months

Because book 9 ends on New Years Day, book 10 being one year later would put it in January, therefore putting Books 11, 12, and subsequently Doomsday in February And i dont think Doomsday is in February, that just doesnt seem right Seems more likely that its in January

So Book 10 probably takes place around mid-to-late December

Hiccup would be 14 years 10 months old ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Books 12 and 11 take place over the same 3 or so odd days

They're set a month after book 10, though probably not quite a month

This would end the series around Mid January, and also mean that the 12 Days of Doomsday likely start the second week of January

Hiccup would be about 14 years 11 months old at the end of the series -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now since we've finally got the timeline out of the way we can finally move on to

The Ages

Starting with Hiccup for anyone who didnt want to read through this whole thing

Hiccup:

Book 1 - Around 9 years 10 months at the beginning and 10 years 3 months at the end

Book 2 - Around 10 years 4 months old

Book 3 - Around 10 years 8 months old

Book 4 - Around 11 years old

Book 5 - Around 11 1/2 years old

Book 6 - 12 years old

Book 7 - Around 12 years 2 months at the beginning and 12 years 5 months at the end

Book 8 - Around 12 1/2

Book 9 - Around 13 years 10 months

Book 10 - Around 14 years 10 months

Book 11 - Around 14 years 11 months

Book 12 - Around 14 years 11 months

Fishlegs's Ages

We only get Fishlegs's age once in the series, in book 8 it says he's 13 and a quarter but thats all we need to figure out the rest

Hiccup is 12 1/2 in book 8

Fishlegs is 13 and a quarter

In other words 13 years 3 months and 12 years 6 months, meaning Fishlegs is 9 months older than Hiccup

Add 9 months to Hiccup's ages and we've got Fishlegs's ages

Fishlegs:

Book 1 - Around 10 years 7 months at the beginning and 11 years at the end

Book 2 - Around 11 years 1 month

Book 3 - Around 11 years 5 months

Book 4 - Around 11 years 9 months

Book 5 - Around 12 1/2

Book 6 - Around 12 years 9 months

Book 7 - Around 12 years 11 months at the beginning and 13 years 2 months at the end

Book 8 - 13 years 3 months

Book 9 - Around 14 years 7 months

Book 10 - Around 15 years 7 months

Book 11 - Around 15 years 8 months

Book 12 - Around 15 years 8 months

There is an age contradiction in this book

When its talking about the Dragon Jewel, and that it was in the Necklace, it says that 'as with all Lost Things , it was almost as if it had been searching for Hiccup....the Jewel carried the pot safely across the waves, to the shores of Berk where the baby hiccup had just been born' Which implies that Fishlegs was born just a few days before Hiccup

Either that or for whatever reason either the Naming Dame waited almost a year before naming him or the tribe decided to wait several months before putting him out to sea, but neither of those match up with what we know so i think it was just an error lol

Anyways i just realized this means Fishlegs's Birthday is sometime in May!!

The community should pick a day in May to celebrate the Lad next year!

Camicazi's Ages

Like Fishlegs, her age is only mentioned in book 8

She's 11 and a quarter, so 2 years younger than Fishlegs and 1 a quarter years younger than Hiccup

Camicazi:

Book 1 - Around 8 years 7 months at the beginning and 9 years old at the end

Book 2 - Around 9 years 1 month old

Book 3 - Around 9 years 5 months old

Book 4 - Around 9 years 9 months old

Book 5 - Around 10 1/2

Book 6 - Around 10 years 9 months old

Book 7 - Around 10 years 11 months old at the beginning and 11 years 2 months old at the end

Book 8 - 11 years 3 months

Book 9 - 12 years 7 months

Book 10 - 13 years 7 months

Book 11 - 13 years 8 months

Book 12 - 13 years 8 months

This means Camicazi's birthday is also in May, so we need to pick out TWO days in May to celebrate Birthdays lol

Book 2 - Around 13 years 9 months old

Book 3 - Around 14 years 1 month old

Book 4 - Around 14 1/2

Book 5 - Around 15

Book 6 - Around 15 1 /2

Book 7 - Around 15 years 8 months at the beginning and 15 years 11 months at the end

Book 8 - Around 16

Book 9 - Around 17 years 4 months

Book 10 - Around 18 years 4 months

Book 11 - Around 18 years 5 months

Book 12 - ..................

This means Snotlout's birthday was probably maybe late July/sometime in August ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Alvin's Age

We never get a specific age for Alvin, so these are all guesses based on what seems logical to me

So we know he left before Termagant gave birth, though we dont know exactly how long before, id say she was probably 4-6 months pregnant, but it doesnt really matter

The only real important things for getting an approximate age are how long ago it was from book 12, and how old he was at the time

Im going with it was around 16 years ago, and that he was in his mid 20s, like 25 years old

Book 1 though 3 - Around 36

Books 4 and 5 - Around 37

Book 6 though 8 - Around 38

Book 9 - around 39-40

Book 10 through 12 - Around 41

----------------------------------------------------------------------

A Few Other Characters

Stoick and Valhallarama - Probably their 40s to 50s throughout the series

Baggybum - Probably late 30s early-to-mid 40s

We actually know Old Wrinkly's Age, its said in book 4

Books 1 through 3- Around 92

Book 4 and 5 - Around 93

Book 6 through 8 - Around 94

Book 9 - Around 95-96

Books 10 through 12 - Around 97 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

And thats pretty much it

I cant really think of any other character to try to Age

Kaia gerber reminds me a lot of laura harrier. I really lik laura tbh she has great fashion, very beautiful, seems sweet, i always lik reading her interviews n she seems to hav great books taste. Bt she, lik Kaia, r jus nt good actors (imo) 😬 the line delivery n their voices r distracting n take me out of the movie/show tbh. Laura went to an acting skool n i actually think Kaia takes lessons bt i dnt know if they jus need more lessons (n can jus improve) or if acting isnt just for them

Honestly, with Laura, I think part of the problem is that she sounds too much like a "valley girl". 👀 I hate to say it, but she might need to work on getting a new accent like Julia Roberts had to do in order to get more roles. In "Blakkklansman" I kept getting pulled out of the movie and the sense of time period we were supposed to be in the film. She did try her best though. Btwn her and JDW's questionable acting I was like.... 🥴

I think JDW did better in that film than "TENET" though. Oooo wee "TENET" lol. 😅🤣 He was the lead, but EVERYBODY was acting CIRCLES around him lol...it was so funny lol.

Thank you for pin-pointing what it is lol. Kaia just can't act period...🤣 I'm not even sure if it's her voice or delivery tbh lol. Even Paris Jackson was more believable in scenes than her lol.

For those of you who were not aware, there is an episode of the new Muppet Babies show on Disney Junior that i think rocks; this episode, called Gonzorella, features Gonzo’s struggle with wanting to dress as a princess for Piggy’s royal ball.

in the episode, Piggy and Summer find a ”royal ball handbook” that has the steps for throwing a ball. in this book, it dictates that there will be princesses with gorgeous dresses.

Gonzo is excited by this, thrilled to play. However, when he says that he’s looking forward to his princess dress, Piggy points out that actually, the girls are supposed to he the princesses and the boys are typically knights.

Gonzo kind of retreats into himself and steps to the side as the others prepare for the ball. Mildly heartbroken, it only takes a moment for Rizzo to appear as his Fairy Ratfather! yeah idk

anyway Gonzo gets his dress and disguise, and shows up to the party and everyone is fascinated by his way of doing things, such as making a crown that isnt exactly like the one in the picture, doing fun dance moves, and being unashamedly himself.

Of course the spell is broken at some point, and he runs away. Piggy rushes to Gonzo, claiming that she wished he was there to see their mysterious guest. She uses they/them pronouns to refer to the princess in order to describe how cool they were.

Gonzo announces himself and says that he ”doesnt want to do things just because that's the way they've always been done.”

Of course the others accept him. of course they say that from here on, all royal balls should let people dress however they want.

Look i know im dwelling maybe too much. Maybe tumblr has seen this already. maybe you havent. either way, i think it was something really cool to stumble upon one random babysitting gig. i think its something really special.

FUCK NO LOL. i just jot down the most important scenes first, or at least the scenes in my mind that stand out the most. Then i just…tend to fill in the blanks…but sometimes i try to work backwards! Like figuring out the ending first sometimes helps me in terms of structure and pacing

Do you start with something in particular?

HRRRRM well, it depends on the story i suppose…i usually like to start with either the inciting incident or like…not a prologue exactly but a bit where the story is set up asking a QUESTION narratively so to speak. the 2nd one tends to be hard for me to do cuz i have to make it interesting enough to keep people reading…

in the case of SE, the inciting incident happened decades beforehand, and the story itself is like…the consequences manifesting!! after being held off for so long if that makes sense

How fully formed does your writing come out first try?

usually 40% of the time. i write down what happens beat for beat then i usually have to hit my head against the wall to come up with cohesive sentences and prose…which doesnt work anymore now vv’ i have to get back into reading books tbh

How many drafts do you go through?

ive never had a fully formed draft in my life so i wouldnt know

Tell me about your process

the characters tend to come first. they just kinda show up expecting to be put somewhere, but first i just kinda let them run around a bit on their own. i let them develop a base personality, then introduce more characters to flesh them out.

the world comes into existence at roughly the same time as the characters do- not fully fleshed out, it DOES in fact, start out as a vibe. bits and pieces abt what it looks like, which leads to ‘WHY does it look like that? what happened?’ which leads into more questions obviously, but the nitty gritty details of the setting dont really come into fruition until i get the inklings of a plot

the plot, while secondary, is actually very important to me. i truly hate the “no plot just vibes” aspect of a lot of writing communities these days for some reason (not being mean just. i dont like it…) so i usually have a plot surrounding the characters in some way- there isnt “OOOH the fate of the wooorld!!” sort of thing. the plot doesnt come first to me, but that doesnt mean that its not equally as important. ‘The Thing’ is happening and what the characters want, and how they react to Thing is usually how i let the plot drive itself. which can obviously be chaotic…and thats why the last year or so of me working on SE has been equally as chaotic, but its been simmering down recently to the point where i really SHOULD be starting to script things…. if that makes sense at all

throughout the entire process theres usually a ton of research into a shitload of different topics. what-ifs and what not- “oh what if THIS thing happened? what if this historic event went differently? what if robots were meat? what if the earth got cracked open? everything is ‘WHAT IF’ or ‘HOW WOULD’, and then the story is just me exploring the answers to those questions :D

the steps arent usually in any particular order and i tend to bounce around a lot, but to sum it all up i develop stories by consistently going 'this would be sick as shit if [x] was a thing/happened'

Mod: With so much going on on my end with my AUs and me having a job, I won’t lie I kinda forgot. And it’s been kinda hard to bring myself to continue. Mostly because what I’m doing involves writing official characters from a series that, despite loving suits designs and abilities, I have my…. Certain gripes with. Cuz the story was a bit all over the place. ^^; And projecting them against these kids is kinda tricky. Because due to the story being a bit wonky (not the Flowified AU or the kids in void in general I wanna make that clear) the character’s development in such cases is….. obscure? Durendal for example at the time was hard to put together on how he would face the child, I know he harsh yet fair. But follows a strict code. Really all I know about him aside from his sister is his clan that he grew up in and how they were raise. Anything else like what his likes or dislikes are or what he does when he ISNT constantly fighting is hard for me to get into character. As for Buster thank god I was able to find a manga about his past so I feel like I’m able to make him go well. Blades on the other hand despite being the secondary character of the show was also a little tricky? I know he is a dedicated swordsman and he more of a bookworm to the point where he calls humans “Homosapians” but even then like the other swordsman I barely understand him to project him. Aside from his master he is constantly talking about, I remember only him constantly fighting aswell. And Calibur….. uhhh… Let’s just say she wasn’t exactly the user of the sword at the beginning of the series. IN FACT SHE USED IT AT THE END OF THE SERIES AND ALL I KNOW IS THAT SHE A CLONE OF SOME… MAGIC BOOK CHARACTER CHILD?

This series is so weird to understand lore wise despite them telling AND showing. And there are supposed to be TEN of these guys. TEN TECHNICALLY MAIN CHARACTERS! First off the transformation sounds are long, they have an ending song which is not usually done in this series. And there are usually only 45 to 50 episodes each at best supposed to be 23 minutes. It feels like information was cut out due to the books swords transformations and ending rambling on.

Now why am I ranting about this. Cuz here is the key detail to all this.

I HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE CHARACTER IF I WANNA PLAY IT RIGHT.

I’m not an artist so I can’t just draw a simple scene and call it a day. My only way to do this is make fan stories that project the feelings perfectly. And it’s difficult to do sometimes when it comes to the characters I’m trying to present to flowified kids. Cuz this isn’t meant to just be a battle of abilities it’s meant to be a battle of IDEALS. A teaching moment. Not just dragon ball or jojo stuff where you beat the character and call it a day. And if I don’t project it right I feel like I’m ruining the characters and intention behind it.

So that’s why it’s been so difficult to continue. I apologize for my ramble. I am not sure if I will continue it anytime soon because I am working on other major stuff on my other blogs and here. And it’s been a lot more easy to understand and put together. Maybe at some point I will continue. But that’s really gonna depend. I DO want this interaction to happen. Because i feel like these heroes could save them and teach them. YES even chara (may be stubborn but at least they can be lectured). But I will need time and lots of motivation to continue. Especially when I’m so busy and trying my best to keep track of a lot of projects and side stuff that goes on. ^^;

We will have to see.
