Moon Knight Boys Helping With Writer’s Block (HC)
i am currently having the worst writers block while writing a jake lockley x reader fic. i thought i could finish it today but that doesn’t seem to be the case. in the meantime, because this is my copium, here's some short headcanons on how the boys would help. ENJOY!!
masterlist
Marc Spector
Tumblr media
terrible.
he would be absolutely terrible at helping.
no offense marc but i have a feeling he'd try to help and just fail miserably.
like, he'd look at your writing for a split-second and immediately give up cause he has no idea how any of that shit works.
but, even then, he's very good at complimenting you and motivating you
would bring you snacks to help get your brain going.
also little pecks to the face every now and then cause he likes giving you attention.
tries to help again and would instead just point out the wrong things
you appreciate it anyway because it's marc and you love him too much
Steven Grant
Tumblr media
steven reads a lot so it would make sense for him to be very literate.
he helps you with grammar mistakes, better vocab, fixing tenses, all of that kinds of stuff.
for every mistake that he points out, he'd always end it with "but if you wanna keep it there, that's fine too." even though it isn't fine, he just doesn't want to act like a smartass
you tell him that he's doing a good job every time and his face would just absolutely be beaming with joy.
without the both of you realizing, you'd have spent hours just sitting there and writing and writing non-stop
suddenly it's 2 am and you're both drained out and won't be able to continue
you had fun writing with him though and would definitely start planning a little writing date
Jake Lockley
Tumblr media
now jake, jake wouldn't know how to write anything but
he's very good at acting out fight scenes and giving you a more visualized picture to what you would be writing
he also would just, know things for some reason
say goodbye to google, you have jake lockley to ask now
any questions you have starting from "how to stitch up wounds" to "how long it would take for someone to bleed out." he would always have an answer to them
he also knows a lot of fighting technique names that isn't just punching and kicking
he helps a lot with those
when you ask how he knows these things, he tells you that it's because he's usually the only one who gets into fights
which results in him getting injured a lot and having to tend to his own wounds
he doesn't do it as much now but it still worried you
you end up just worrying about him the whole day and completely forgetting about your writing
you get back to it though after a while and jake never stops helping cause he's a sweetheart

“Systemic Approach (Part Two),” Avengers Unlimited (Vol. 1/2022), Infinity Comic, #64.
Writer: Mat Groom; Penciler and Inker: Caio Majado; Colorist: Pete Pantazis; Letterer: Joe Sabino
#Marvel#Marvel comics#Marvel 616#Avengers Unlimited#Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic#Moon Knight comics#latest release#Moon Knight#Marc Spector#Jake Lockley#Steven Grant#Captain America#Steve Rogers#hey Mr. Groom excuse me but how did you get access to inside my head because this is pretty much exactly what I could have wanted in life#because don’t get me wrong I love Mr. MacKay’s run but one thing I’ve been missing is just Steven - Jake - and Marc interacting#(and I was hoping that the name of this arc was in reference to the Moon Knight system but I hadn’t dared hope too much)#which means there’s so much I love here#love Jake’s jacket and the acknowledgement that the people he mingles with are in no way lesser than Steven’s socialite#or Marc’s superhero ilk but rather the people who often just need some help (whether that be through Steven’s funds/business acumen#Jake’s hands-on social support#or Marc’s /very/ hands-on support method of boxing villains over the head) but could be the least likely to get it#and !!!!! an acknowledgement that the system is a strength and an invaluable asset to Moon Knight work !!!!#and that it was Khonshu’s influence that was largely the problem as opposed to the system’s neurodivergence !!!!#and an acknowledgement from Cap of all people! I WEEP#it just means so much to me: Marc getting some support both from the system and from Cap#as well as how in character this is for Cap#as some of my favorite moments of his are where he reaches out to those deemed by others too ‘unstable’ or ‘unreliable’ to ever amount to#much in the grand scheme of things and he asks them to be Avengers#recognizing what invaluable talents they posses#could the cynical say this reads like a Saturday morning psa? sure but this is an infinity comic with Cap. Enjoy it for what it is akshsksj

I WANNA TALK ABOUT ISSUE#15 OK? OK.
So. What an issue, huh? Absolutely stunning, and while I wish we got some Jake and Steven interacting with the Midnight Mission, I do adore this issue and it was an incredible follow up to the last issue. The art, the writing, the color choice's, the Steven, THE JAKE!!! anyway, this is an analysis so let's do it.
Tumblr media
Marc Spector doesn’t believe that he’s enough. He never has, which is why he was initially so reluctant and terrified of giving up control (which I went a bit ham on analyzing here). He’s scared of someone else seeing him how he sees himself, as nothing more than a means to an end, and realizing once they’ve gotten what they need out of him, he won’t be useful anymore. He calls himself a “fist”, he literally says “I still have my uses” in the context of a fight. Marc doesn’t see himself as being much else outside of that violence and his mission as Khonshu’s fist.
Which directly contrasts with Steven and Jake. (YAY I GET TO TALK ABOUT THEM!!!)
Steven, who’s already got his own society he feels semi-comfortable in, can slip into that role of rich benefactor like he was born for it. The first thing he does when fronting is always always take off the mask and take care of them. Which is, so impactful. Because yes, he’d care about their appearance. He's rich, sure. But it’s more than that. He takes care of them because it’s what they deserve. They’re worth something. They’re worthy of love and affection, self care in the form of expensive hair treatments and makeovers.
He takes off the mask (literally and metaphorically and the secret third meaning and fourth and—) and looks in the mirror and chastises Marc for not taking care of them then does exactly that because Steven Grant doesn’t see Marc or Jake of any of them as tools or means, but as people. He proves Marc wrong by just by existing.
Tumblr media
Then we got Jake. JAKE FUCKING LOCKLEY!!! Our avuncular scoundrel’s first act when fronting is going to see his friends. Which I just. I love it. When he throws open the doors and says he’s back and is met with such love and care and enthusiasm. Which is such a magenta moment (passion and compassion and kindness and I’m not gonna get into the color theory of it all but the fact that his two colors are magenta and sooome green make me gigle🤭). But it also takes us back to the last issue where he laments losing their friends. Where Marc said he never needed them. Where Marc is obviously dead fucking wrong.
Jake’s not in his element, he’s at home. He’s with his people, and his people have him and it’s beautiful. And it’s how Jake takes care of them, by creating connections with everyone from all walks of life. Because, once again, everyone wants to be loved. So he goes out and makes jokes and earns trust and makes promises and gives and gets love and lives. He shows he — and by default the system — aren’t incapable of giving or receiving affection. He proves Marc wrong just by living.
Tumblr media
And now. We got the biggun. Marc.
We’ve already established Marc’s issues with constantly needing to be in control stemming from his fear of being cast aside or deemed unlovable, said issues causing a lot of the problems in his life. What I love about this issue is that it works on dismantling those thoughts, one by one. If Steven and Jake prove Marc wrong, the rest of the Midnight Mission enforce those ideas by hammering them home with a comically oversized hammer. Soldier does what Soldier does: be the chillest fucking guy around. Badr obviously has his own Khonshu/religious tinted lense of looking at it but that doesn’t make him any less understanding. He just thinks Marc is a fucking idiot (and he’s not wrong!).
Then. Then. Reese. Reese who comes in, shatters every single insecurity and fear and preconceived notion Marc has about himself. Reese who doesn’t know about his past and doesn’t care because she sees what he’s trying to do now, the good he’s trying to do and is doing, and admires that. Reese who doesn’t push when that’s clearly what Marc is expecting her to do (because that’s probably what everyone has done, always done. Ask probing, invasive questions that he forces himself to answer and now he’s so used to them he’s constantly shocked when people don’t ask. He’s shocked when people care. He’s shocked when he finds himself caring.).
Reese. Who says…
Tumblr media
…which is probably the first time anyone has said that to him. It’s probably the first time anyone has cared enough to even think it. The very thing Jake and Steven have been proving to him all issue, the thing Reese says so naturally and casually. It’s not a grand revelation from her, it’s not something she has to think about. Marc is enough and she knows it, Jake and Steven know it, the rest of the Midnight Mission and the community know it. The only who doesn’t, or didn’t, was Marc. And now. And now.
Tumblr media
He does. And Reese and Steven and Jake will be damned if he forgets that anytime soon.
(AND VERY BRIEFLY I WANNA TALK AB THE COLORS!!! Ok so I’m absolutely in love with the colors Rosenberg chose. They vary a lot between pages but my color associations are: Steven gold, Jake magenta, Marc blue. There are a lot of pages where the characters swap colors or have different ones but I’m going to stick with these associations because they make sense to me.
Steven gold is probably the most clear cut one. Gold is a warm color, symbolizing wealth and generosity. Divinity and power. Steven is rich (or was) so there’s the wealth, I’d say the generosity comes from how he takes care of the body, mostly physically. There aren’t many pages where Steven appears in, but the one in the barber or whatever is where I’m drawing most of these thoughts from. Marc is also depicted with a lot of gold, particularly when he’s speaking to Dr. Sterman especially when he’s giving long ass melodramatic monologues. Which I find interesting, as those extended metaphors and speeches seem like his way of establishing control, or power, in a conversation which is generally supposed to end up with deep self evaluation and a certain amount of vulnerability that comes with giving up some of that control (he is talking to his therapist, after all, even if she doesn’t do a very good job of it but— that’s a story for another day)
Jake magenta is a very clearly shown visual. Magenta is another warm color, symbolizing passion and compassion, kindness and love. Jake is the Just Some Guy of the three, probably the most affable and easygoing, so magenta makes sense thematically for him as well. What’s also cool is that magenta is the primary, dominating color in a lot of his pages where he’s surrounded by people he cares about (I’m thinking of the last issue in his headspace emotional support strip club where all the dancers looked like Marlene and this issue at the bar with his friends). Almost as if he’s overflowing with love and care for others.
Both Jake and Steven appear in several pages where the primary color is green, which symbolizes growth, renewal, rebirth. This is the only cool color they’re depicted in, which is also interesting because Marc is almost exclusively shown in panels with cool colors (minus the gold ones I mentioned earlier). Marc also appears in pages with greens, particularly those where he talks to Soldier and Badr, symbolizing his growth of being able and willing to open up to them.
Tumblr media
Finally, Marc blue has been a dominant color for basically this entire run. Blue is a cool color that symbolizes a lot, but I’ll stick with sadness, peace, security and freedom. Sadness is pretty obvious, but the other three are aspirational for him. And I think this is most clearly shown by the fact that the only exclusively blue Marc pages are the last two with Reese. Her understanding and words help take him one step closer to those things he’s always wanted, that love and understanding. And I think her wearing a YELLOW shirt also shows the positive influence and power her words have on him. Plus, it’s a good contrast against the background and his suit ;)
Tumblr media
Last last thing I wanna mention about colors because wow this got out hand is the page where Marc takes off the mustache (NOOOOO) and introduces himself. It has all the colors I mentioned in a gradient, which imo symbolizes how he’s finally starting to work with Steven and Jake as a system, a team, and how they’re all separate parts but also parts of a whole. Also harkens back to earlier, when Marc mentioned he hasn’t asked Jake and Steven’s opinion. They aren’t perfect, there’s still some work to be done on communication, but they’re getting there and that’s what matters. It’s a great visual, and he even gets his emo anime boy hair back so win there, I guess😐)

The Right Fit
Summary: This is a short one. Steven has at last accomplished something amazing in academia and the other two decide to give him a gift. Welcome to your rightful place, Steven.
Warning: None
Word Count: 978
Word Prompt:  Suit
--
It had been a long and difficult journey.
Possibly not as long as it could have been. Steven had done so much of the work before he had even set foot on campus. Tests and presentations and meetings had taken up his days. Special considerations had also been taken that had made all three of them nervous, even though Jake had pretended to not care.
A second job working on campus at the bookstore then promoting up to teacher’s assistant. Night shift cabbie jobs done by Jake and weekend chores done by Marc. When Steven felt overwhelmed or had failed to sleep for the third night in a row, Jake and Marc traded on who got to step in and knock Steven out.
Now, Steven stood in his flat, exhausted but feeling beyond accomplished. “I did it.” He was still clutching the piece of paper he had gotten in a special flat envelope in the mail. “It’s done. I can’t believe it’s done!”
He pulled out the special frame he had gotten just for this occasion. Slipping off the back, he carefully pressed the paper into the frame then sealed it up.
“Doctor Grant.” He beamed as he admired the frame. “I quite like the sound of that.” Steven carefully moved to hang the frame up over the fish tank.
“Hey, we have a present for you.” Jake spoke up, sounding nonchalant but there was a hint of nervousness there too.
“Oh?” Steven blinked away from the frame. “I don’t need a present. I mean, you guys helped me out so much. This is really an accomplishment for all of us!”
Marc had pulled all the right strings to make sure all the schoolwork had been given to Steven and Steven alone. It was all in his name and there was no mention of Marc anywhere on the papers. While the school had been made aware of their special circumstances, Jake and Marc had both sworn up and down before the Dean himself that they would not be helping to cheat or bringing unwanted public opinion to the school.
In fact, Jake and Marc had both taken their own aptitude tests to prove that Steven was in fact the brains of the operation. Neither of them told Steven what their scores had been. Steven suspected that they were probably higher than they thought they would be, but knew they had both been reluctant about their shared GED experience after school and the Marines had failed them.
What had really brought Steven to tears with pure love was when Marc and Jake had both decided to sit with the school counselor for evaluation. Marc had spent the day before fighting off such a massive panic attack that Steven had briefly considered sitting in for him. Marc had refused and gone in like a champion, his face set in stone and shoulders square as he marched in.
By the time he came out, he had collapsed on himself and Jake had been forced to take them home. Marc had held his breath through most of the session. When Jake went in, he had stared down the counselor with what had first seemed to be utter malice. It was later determined to be him fighting off a flashback by dissociating so hard that he had zero memory of the actual session. Apparently it had gone well enough.
When Steven had sat in his own session, bubbling and talkative and chatting up the counselor like this was all nothing to him, they had given their approval to let him take the classes he wanted. They had also slipped a piece of paper to him with a good therapist recommendation for the other two. Marc had promptly thrown it in the bin and made Steven Promise that he would never force them to do anything like that again.
“This is your dream, Steven.” Marc grinned. “And we wanted you to have this. So… Stop being stubborn and just accept it, okay?”
“It was Marc’s idea.” Jake spoke up, moving them to pull a large box out of the closet.
“How on earth did you guys get this without me noticing?” Steven stared at the box in bafflement.
“Not as hard to do as you’d think.” Jake shrugged. “You sleep like a baby.”
“And are super unobservant when we do anything around here.” Marc nodded. “I honestly brought it into the place hidden under a stack of books for the first couple of days.”
“Wow. I…I think I’m a little disappointed in myself now.” Steven laughed. “Can I open it?” He fidgeted his fingers on his sleeves. He wasn’t used to presents. Things that were just his made him nervous. He always wanted to share. To let others be happy too. He secretly hoped it was some sort of cake or something so he could invite friends over to enjoy it too.
“Of course you can open it!” Marc sighed. “It’s for you! Go on! You aren’t going to be a doctor for the first time forever!”
Steven took off the lid and stared down into the box with puzzlement for a moment. His hand was trembling as he picked up the item. He wasn’t sure if it was him that was trembling or perhaps Marc. “A hat?”
“We aren’t getting you a machete.” Jake smiled.
Recognition brought tears to his eyes as he suddenly understood. He quickly moved to stand before a mirror and put the hat on.
It was large and out of place here in his London flat, but soon it would be out where it belonged. He had already been invited out to a dig site to help translate a new tomb that had been found.
“When danger is near.” Marc smirked.
Steven had the largest smile he could muster as he tilted the hat back. “Steven Grant has no fear.”

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY (MCU) MOON KNIGHT!
🥳🌙❤️
Tumblr media
A whole year later, and heck you really did change my life. I know that sounds like an overreaction, but it was the catalyst that got me back into Egyptology and postgrad study, which I really let go over the last 10 years of soul sucking work. It’s so nice to be passionate about something again! And hey, I even went to Egypt for the first time ever in January (also something that had been delayed for 12 years)….
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, thanks to everyone behind such a beautiful, passionate and empathetic show (particularly behind it’s mental health themes).
Aaaaand I still listen to the music every day… god it’s so gooood!!!! 😑👌
COME ON SEASON 2. NEED MORE OF THIS BOY RIGHT NOW.

“How do you have time in the day to be three people?” Jessica, who was barely one person, had asked.
“If we’re going to factor in all three people into the equation,” Colleen said, who clearly did not want to, “then we have the secretary as the day shift, the Avatar business as the night shift, and the cabbie nonsense as the hustle. Then you have our hero team as another side hustle, and somehow you still have the time to be an alcoholic. I do not know how you do it.”
“That one’s easy,” Jake had said proudly. “Khonshu can heal the impaired brain activity caused by lack of sleep. We get, like, two hours a night.”
Everybody had stared at him.
“Well,” Luke had said finally, “this explains a lot.”
Endless criticism.
In which Jake works the shit jobs and Steven joins the war on autism on the side of autism.

So with the hospital being the Duat, I think the bits where Harrow was talking with Marc (and later Steven) were reflective of the system's (or Marc, or whoever's fronting at the time) self opinion or subconscious beliefs. In ep 4, it started with Marc feeling extremely out of control, being drugged and roughed up and taken advantage of. Marc knows he has DID (even if he doesn't have the words for it) and equates that with himself being broken or crazy. He's so quick to jump to the conclusion of his own insanity when Steven questions why the Duat has appeared in this form.
When he's back in Harrow's office the first time in ep 5, he has a bloodied nose, and is later forcefully sedated. His words and experiences aren't taken seriously. The environment is extremely hostile, reflective of Marc's own self-loathing and guilt.
The second time, it literally opens with Harrow telling Marc that he's proud of him, and validating how difficult his emotional journey with revisiting his memories has been. Harrow mentions that they don't sedate patients, he gets Marc a glass of water, and tells him how the only way forward is to be open with Steven. Marc has made significant progress, but still doesn't want to get at the most painful memories, so his subconscious is trying to encourage what needs to be done.
And finally, when it's Steven's turn in the office, it's still that more welcoming version, but it makes Steven grapple with the truth about his calls with his mom. A truth he really already knew, but didn't want to confront. And Harrow's comment that Steven checked them in - with Steven being the emotional protector of the system, the one who takes over when Marc is overwhelmed.
The progress of Harrow's office was their progress, too - Their subconscious reacting to the situation and reflecting how they grew and changed throughout the episode.
