In case you missed it, Quicksilver was featured in a two-part short story in Avengers Unlimited last month. In it, Pietro travels to Madripoor to confront the mutant serial killer known as Mister X, who he previously fought in during the Siege event in Thunderbolts #143.
Pietro finds X at an underground prizefighting ring, where he accuses X of killing his cousin, Jardani Lakatos. This is noteworthy for several reasons-- for one, this is the first Pietro or Wanda have ever mentioned having cousins, or any living relatives outside of their immediate family. This would imply that they’ve maintained relationship with their extended Romani family, even after Marya and Django’s apparent deaths, which has never been shown before.
The name “Jardani Lakatos” is meant to be explicitly Romani. “Lakatos” is a verifiable Romani surname that is common in Hungary, not too far from where Wanda and Pietro grew up. That was a very well-researched choice! "Jardani,” on the other hand, was probably borrowed it from the John Wick franchise, in which Keanu Reeves (a gadjo actor) plays a Romani character whose birth name is Jardani. It is a real name, but John Wick is, like, the only thing that comes up if you google it.
That aside, Jardani is described as someone who “had his dark moments and struggles, as we all do,” but was not, in Pietro’s own words, deserving of death. I thought was interesting because it follows the same pattern set by Django Maximoff’s story in which criminality is depicted with sympathy. The reader is meant to understand that these people are making hard choices because they’ve lived hard lives. We are not often afforded this level of humanity in media depictions, so little moments like that really stand out to me.
Also, fun fact, boxing and prizefighting are a kind of a big deal in a lot of Romani communities. There are a lot of famous Romani fighters from Europe! It was kind of cool, just seeing Pietro be a badass in this particular environment. If you’re interested in Romani boxers, Johann Trollman was a resistance icon and you should all read his story, but you an also support contemporary athletes like Earl Small!
