I think the most unrealistic thing to me about Invader Zim is the fact that Dib instantly hates Zim. Like maybe this is just me but if I was an elementary schooler that was obsessed with outer space and paranormal entities living in a borderline-dystopian corporate hellscape and my dad neglected me, I had no friends whatsoever, all of my classmates hated and bullied me for being weird, and nobody ever listened to me or took me seriously, and then one day an alien in disguise showed up in class that only I could tell was an alien, I would absolutely not declare myself his mortal enemy and try to capture him to have him killed and dissected for the good of the human race. I would beg to be his best friend and hope he would take me with him as the world blows up

I know we collectively agree that Hiccup isn’t romantically inclined, and his getting married and having kids didn’t make sense in the epilogue, but consider: Hiccup getting married for political reasons.

It’s a marriage of alliance, which is recognized both by him and his partner, and they enter it without expectations of romantic involvement. Since they’re now married, they live in the same castle, spend time together, and Hiccup finds he really likes his spouse. They’re funny, get along with his friends, and has the same interests and values. They both probably speak multiple languages. She understands why Hiccup is so dedicated to making the Wilderwest better, and holds similar views. She’s a good politician (her job after all, was to be an ambassador). Hiccup likes spending time with them, and the feeling is mutual. They’re not in love, they have their own lives, but they’re dedicated to each other and eventually decide to raise children. They teach their kids how to train hawks and hunt with dragons, riding, history, the Languages, and all the necessary skills of their world. They’re not in love and they’re happy together.

I totally get Katniss's initial aversion to him (babe, I was right there with you), but honestly the image of Finnick just walking around doing stuff like this to get on her good side just slays me. It's a wonder he didn't start juggling knives next.

But, also, it is a little strategic. He realizes that he came on way too strong and leaned too hard on his Capitol habits, and that the fakery and games won't work with her; he has to be at least a little genuine. So he lets as much of his actual personality leak through as he can--namely his sharp, slightly dark, self-deprecating sense of humor.

And she uses it! I love that she actually carries it forward and uses it to psych out the Gamemakers.

I have a lot of fondness for clunky Hallmark Christmas romance movies with rock bottom production values, vaguely established and extremely contrived plots, dodgy dialgoue, often questionable line readings, and child actors playing a kid who seems either three years younger or older than themselves. Hallmark have not undermined themselves with glib, self aware irony or attempted to "elevate" the delightful low artform that they excel in. Refreshing, honestly.

A lot of these weren't the particular style I was going for (the uptight noble portrait) but they do very much provide a window for me into this era that created the one I am making.
