I know we collectively agree that Hiccup isn’t romantically inclined, and his getting married and having kids didn’t make sense in the epilogue, but consider: Hiccup getting married for political reasons.
It’s a marriage of alliance, which is recognized both by him and his partner, and they enter it without expectations of romantic involvement. Since they’re now married, they live in the same castle, spend time together, and Hiccup finds he really likes his spouse. They’re funny, get along with his friends, and has the same interests and values. They both probably speak multiple languages. She understands why Hiccup is so dedicated to making the Wilderwest better, and holds similar views. She’s a good politician (her job after all, was to be an ambassador). Hiccup likes spending time with them, and the feeling is mutual. They’re not in love, they have their own lives, but they’re dedicated to each other and eventually decide to raise children. They teach their kids how to train hawks and hunt with dragons, riding, history, the Languages, and all the necessary skills of their world. They’re not in love and they’re happy together.
#pushing the aromantic hiccup agenda and also the queerplatonic agenda#as much as the idea of hiccup getting married was always a little off to me it was more the romantic angle#which I why I like the idea of a marriage of alliance and a partner who understands that#and then of course the montage of them being a good team and getting along#and going ‘yeah I like this person. No, You Go First (10)
Sorry for the wait (it’s my MO.) I was working on a DnD campaign and then I rediscovered the Sims! I made Hiccup and Astrid, obviously.
Gratuitous kissing in this chapter!!!!
Ao3 | FF.net
—-
Hiccup walked in his front door. Or, what would be his front door for a few months. He only hoped that he’d have help from the rest of the tribe next time around. He was still pretty exhausted from building this house.
“Hi Astrid,” he smiled.
“Hi Hiccup,” she smiled back.
“Hi Hiccup,” her parents parroted, in a sickly sweet tone.
“I did not say it like that!” She protested.
“Oh you have nothing to be ashamed of, lass! He’s your husband! Be soft for once!”
She rolled her eyes. “Where was this teasing and giddiness when I was engaged to Snotlout?”
Phlegma giggled. “Snotlout wasn’t walking around with a hickey on his neck last winter.”
Hiccup clapped a hand to his neck. “Again with the hickey?”
“Aye, a badge of honor.” Stoick said, lifting Hiccup’s trunk onto his shoulder. Hiccup had insisted on helping Stoick carry it here, but it looked like his help had been more of a hindrance. “A mark of a fight not won with your hands, but your wits.”
“Is there ever an analogy from you that doesn’t have to do with battle?” Hiccup chuckled.
“Not any good ones,” Stoick laughed as he took the trunk up to the loft.
“You know,” said Phlegma. “It’s a very lovely house, Hiccup. But I can’t help but notice…the lack of furniture.”
In fact, there was a hearth, and a countertop creating a kitchen area, but not much else to see in the main room. A bathing area was under the loft, but it too was sparse in furnishings.
“Yes, well, Gobber assured me tables and chairs and such would be built before the wedding…but I threw his time table off by about a month.” Hiccup grimaced.
“Well, you’re always welcome to eat with us, or up in the Great Hall.” Phlegma offered. “Although…maybe appearing in public could be a bit…”
“Dangerous?” Hiccup suggested.
“Contentious.” Said Stoick as he returned. “Some people were very excited about Astrid’s marriage to Snotlout. Others were just excited about the party.”
“Well, we’re still going to have a proper wedding in the future. Right dad?” Hiccup asked.
“Aye lad. It's important for you to have a traditional ceremony. One that would invite our allies. It would be the biggest event of the year.”
“Oh boy, more anxiety,” Hiccup chuckled breathlessly.
“Well, we’d like to give you two your privacy, but…do you even have a bed to sleep in?” Axel wondered.
“Yep! I actually had to build it before the house was finished.” Hiccup smirked. “Snotlout wanted a nice big bed so that Astrid wouldn’t kick him while sleeping.”
“I don’t kick!”
Phlegma smiled. “Oh darling…yes you do.”
“I’ll just say goodbye to my shins now.” Hiccup cringed.
“How big of a bed are we talking?” Axel asked.
“It’s a little ridiculous, if I’m being honest.” Hiccup beckoned them to follow him upstairs to the loft.
“HICCUP!” Astrid shouted as soon as she saw it.
Axel and Phlegma started laughing again.
“You know,” said Stoick. “I’d ask to trade, but I don’t know how you’d get this out of the house.”
“You can’t. You’d have to take it apart, or take out the wall.”
“Hiccup! There’s no room for anything else in this room!” Astrid walked around the perimeter of the frame. She had about two feet of space on all sides. “Where do we store our clothes? Or anything else?!”
Hiccup smirked then, feeling fairly proud of himself, and held up a finger. “Observe.” He pulled a handle on the side of the frame, and the whole bed flipped up against the wall. Underneath, there were several drawers along the edges, and trunks in the middle. “Ta-da!”
“Oooh!” Axel and Phlegma clapped.
Astrid nodded slowly. “Alright, that’s pretty cool.”
Hiccup beamed at the praise and lowered the bed back down.
“I think all that’s left is to let you both get settled in,” said Stoick. “So we’ll get out of your hair.”
By the giggling that Phlegma and Axel shared, you’d think that they were the newly wed couple.
“Yes yes, two teenagers alone on their wedding night, it’s very funny.” Astrid started to shove her parents back downstairs.
“Now, there’s no rush in the morning. Come over whenever you’re hungry, and I’ll make you some food!” Phlegma chirped as she was being actively herded out the door.
“Bye mom! Bye dad! Thanks for your love and support! Now leave us alone!”
“Bye honey!” They both sang.
“I’m not going to have to push you out the door too, right?” Hiccup looked up at his dad.
“You couldn’t if you tried.” Stoick rubbed his son’s head, and gave Astrid a kiss on the cheek. “Have fun!”
After Hiccup closed and locked the door behind him, he let out a big sigh. “Now what?”
“I think this is the part where we become hopelessly entangled in limbs and tongues and you whisk me away to the bedroom,” said Astrid, with a smirk.
“Is that—you want—can I?” Hiccup faced her, trembling, and puckered his lips like a fish.
She pinched his nose. “I thought you knew how to kiss?”
“I did–I do! I-I-I-I just…haven’t practiced in a while…” He said sheepishly, wringing his hands together.
“Well, we have plenty of time to practice. You remember that, right?” she chuckled.
Hiccup gulped and tried to laugh too, though it sounded weak.
She came close, resting her hands on his chest, starting to lean in. But she stopped, concerned. “Hiccup, you’re trembling.”
“I-I-I’m just cold is all.”
“Okay,” she wrapped her arms around him and pulled him into a hug.
He let out a deep breath before hugging her back. His hold was strong, and he rested his face against her neck. She smelled nice. Not a flowery girly smell, but something warm and slightly spicy.
He probably smelled like fish.
“You’re not actually cold, are you?” Astrid asked as she pet his hair.
He swallowed, but didn’t answer.
“You can tell me anything. I won’t judge.”
“I know. I just…don’t know how to say it.”
She gave him a tight squeeze and pulled away. “That’s fine. Let’s just relax–”
“Oh, that’s part of the problem, I can’t.” He shrugged his shoulders, to appear more casual than he was.
“Why not?”
“Oh, no reason, really. I only just got married today, which wasn’t expected. And since the beginning of the year, even with the eels helping with the raids, the village is back to disliking me. And taking someone’s bride is a huge no-no so I’m kind of worried that will compound into disaster.”
“Hiccup–”
“And my uncle wants me to fight my cousin, which I absolutely can’t do.”
“Yeah, but that’s–”
“Not for two weeks, I know, but I can’t help worrying about it. And now, I’m here with you, alone, and I was excited about it earlier, but now I’m realizing what that means and what the expectations are and I don’t know how to…you know. And I want to be the best for you, but I know I’ll mess up. Like…it’ll just hurt for you, and then I’ll finish and pass out and I don’t want that!”
“Whoa, Hiccup, slow down,” Astrid hushed, petting the hair on the back of his neck. “Look. I have no experience with sex either.”
“You can at least say the word.”
She chuckled. “Fair. But we don’t have to do that tonight. We can wait.”
“But you said we were going to ‘have fun’.”
“Sure! Doesn’t have to be sex though, right? If it gives you performance anxiety, then let’s wait on it.”
“Are you sure? To not consummate the marriage—we’re already in hot water!”
“When have we ever done anything the correct way? We have a pair of dragons out in the cove, for Frigga’s sake! Besides, how are they going to know? I’m not going to say anything. So you don’t have to say anything.”
“I…guess…”
“Did you bring sleep clothes?”
Hiccup was startled by the sudden topic change. “Uh, yes. I did.” He pointed upstairs.
“I’m going to get changed too. If the only place to sit in his house is the bed, then we might as well get comfortable.”
“Y-yeah. I’ll wait for you upstairs…” he said in a daze. He climbed the stairs, and found where his father had wedged his trunk. His bed clothes consisted of a pair of black linen pants, and an old white tunic from his father (several years old, and hemmed). Hiccup changed into the pants, but hesitated putting the tunic on. Maybe it would be alright to go without? Afterall, Astrid had seen him shirtless before. Would it make her uncomfortable though? Last time, it had been because their clothes were soaked. Now, there was no reason he shouldn’t wear a shirt.
“Huh. Who knew you were hiding some nice back muscles?”
Hiccup flinched and drew his shoulders up to his ears. “Oh! You got dressed fast!” He turned around and froze.
Astrid was just wearing a light blue tunic. It reached down to her fingertips. It was only a little loose, still accenting her curves. He could even see the faint view of her nipples peeking through the shirt, though he was certain she didn’t think he could. Astrid worked on unraveling her hair, making this mind blowing experience so much more amazing.
“Wow…” he squeaked.
“What?”
“You’re…so beautiful…”
She scoffed, but blushed as she walked around the bed to sit beside him. He realized she was undoing her hair with one hand, while she held her brush in the other.
“Can I brush your hair?” He blurted.
“Uh…if you want to?”
Reverently, he took the brush and ran it through her golden locks. He hit a snag, and moved to start from the top.
“The whole point in brushing my hair is to undo the snags.”
“But I don’t want to hurt you…”
“Here, give me the brush.”
Hiccup frowned as he handed it over. He hadn’t even started!
Astrid quickly brushed through her hair, untangling the knots. Then she gave it back. “Here you go. Now you can do it.”
He brightened and got to work. He would hit a snag, but carefully untangled it with his fingers instead of tearing through it with the brush.
“What made you want to brush my hair?”
“Well…it’s something husbands get to do, right? Wash and brush their wife’s hair? I always liked your hair too. It’s really…” he struggled to find a word that wasn’t ‘beautiful’ again. “I like the color.”
“Well, it feels nice. So thanks.”
A few more runs of the brush, and Hiccup finally relinquished his role. To his dismay, Astrid then gathered up her hair and twisted it into a bun on top of her head.
“You sleep with your hair up?”
“Keeps the tangles out.”
“Ah.” Now that she was here, and they were in this state of vulnerability, he didn’t know what to say. This wasn’t like the hayloft, where they had been relaxed and secret and had all the time in the world. There was weight now, and expectations. People knew where they were and what they should be doing.
Astrid kept taking glances at him, careful not to outright stare, but she seemed to notice something that tickled her and started laughing.
“What? What’s so funny?”
“Your chest hair.”
“My what?” He looked down at his chest and covered the patch with his hand. “What’s so funny about it? We Vikings have to stay warm!”
“Sorry, no no, there’s nothing funny about your chest hair.” She removed his hand from his chest. “A few weeks ago, Snotlout all but ripped his shirt off in front of me to show me his chest hair. He was ‘finally a man’ and ‘a true Viking’, but it was just one hair. You’ve got him beat, which is the funny part.”
He looked back down to his sternum. It was no carpet like the rest of the tribe, but now, he was pretty proud of it. He lowered his voice by an octave, and stated, “aye lass, you’ve picked a real man for your husband. Everyone knows a man is not measured by his muscle or his prowess with a weapon…but how much chest hair he has.”
Astrid started giggling. “That was a flawless impression of your father.”
“I practice.”
She rested her hand on his chest, right over his heart. “But Hiccup, I need you to know that you’re more of a man than Snotlout is, chest hair or no chest hair. You have a job, you built a house, you trained a dragon…it doesn’t matter that you can’t swing a sword. Snotlout wasn’t even that good in the ring. I know everyone gives you a hard time, but I would never, ever, want to be married to someone other than you.” Then she leaned in slowly, giving him enough time to prepare.
Hiccup’s eyes fluttered closed, and he tried not to pucker his lips, but just relax. His pulse pounded in his ears as the thrill of anticipation put him on edge. He was finally going to kiss Astrid again! Of course, they had earlier that day, but he had been caught so off guard he hadn’t enjoyed it at all. In fact, he was a little afraid she would drop him.
After a few seconds, Hiccup was keenly aware that there was no kissing happening. He peeled an eye open to find her looking at him, eyes lidded with an amused smile on her face.
“W-what?” He asked as he felt the blush sweep over his face.
“You know, I’m always the one initiating our kisses.”
“Nuh uh!”
“Name one time you kissed me first.”
“I’m pretty sure I kissed you first in the hayloft…one of the times.”
“That doesn’t count! I started that whole thing!”
“Oh so you count that whole afternoon as one kiss?”
“Of course not! But once you get permission to kiss, it’s understood that permission lasts for a while. So starting a kiss right after one ended is easy compared to the first!”
“Alright, fine, may I kiss you?”
“By all means!”
He could do this. She just said she wanted him to kiss her, so all he had to do was…do it. He leaned forward, letting his eyes close slightly, but not all the way. He didn’t want to miss, of course! And to further improve accuracy, he held her face. Wow, her skin was soft!
Her hands crept up to his shoulders.
He tilted his face slightly, and pressed his lips to hers, gently at first, and then with more passion.
What was he afraid of, again?
Her kiss sent tingles to every inch of his body. He felt warm, and a fuzzy feeling grew in his head.
Astrid wrapped an arm around him, pulling him closer to her. The touch made him squeak. But he soon relaxed and wrapped his arms around her waist.
After spending several months trying to deny any feelings he had for her, Hiccup felt overwhelmed. Fighting between ‘you shouldn’t do this’ and ‘she’s all yours!’ He could kiss her as long and as much as he wanted. There was no one and nothing that would tell him otherwise.
Astrid pulled away for a moment. “You sure you haven’t been practicing?”
He scoffed. “How? With who?”
She shrugged. “A pillow, the bedpost…Toothless.”
He gagged. “Of course not!” His hand ran up and down her back. “But…you and Snotlout…did you–?”
“Never even held his hand.”
Hiccup released a breath he hadn’t known he was holding.
She leaned in again, kissing him more intensely. He returned the fervor, meeting her lips eagerly. His hands fluttered over her, trying to find a place to hold before settling on her waist.
Astrid pushed against his chest, making him fall over onto the bed.
He looked up at her, and she looked down at him.
“Hi Husband,” she smirked.
“Hi Wife…” he breathed. Hiccup scooted backwards so that they weren’t hanging off the side of the bed.
Astrid was quick to straddle his legs to get more comfortable, and then dove back into kissing. Her hands dove into his hair, her nails scratching against his scalp. A wave of shivers went down his spine and he let out a little moan. It seemed like she remembered that little trick from all those months ago.
By the smile pressed to his lips, Hiccup knew she knew.
Oh she was going to smug about it? Well, now it was war!
Hiccup dug his fingers into her hips, and with a mighty heave, flipped them over so he was on top.
Astrid pulled away abruptly, staring in surprise. She didn’t know he had the strength or the balls to do that. “No.”
“No?”
“No!” She hooked her legs around him, grabbed his arms, and flipped them back over, pinning his arms over his head. “There!”
“What!” He barked, wiggling in her grip. She was much stronger than him, and had him pinned so well he could barely move at all.
Stupid warriors.
Astrid looked him over, scrutinizing her prize.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like a Monstrous Nightmare staring at a fish fry. In fact, I think I have seen a Monstrous Nightmare look at me like that.”
Astrid didn’t answer the question, but instead stated, “contrary to popular belief, you do have some nice muscle here.”
“Wait, I do? Where?” He tried to look down.
“Like here,” she jabbed her finger into his side, making him flinch with a yelp. “And here,” she spidered her fingers over his abdomen, making him wriggle violently. “Oh and we found a ticklish spot!”
“You wouldn’t dare!” He squirmed.
“Flip me over, will you!?” And she wiggled her fingers all over his stomach, making him jerk around.
“Aaaahhh–A-A-Astr—AAAAHH—AH AH AH!” He didn’t laugh or giggle, no it was more like a really low scream.
Astrid giggled though. “What was that?! You sound like a Terror stuck in a pipe!”
“Oh I’m sorry, is that not the reaction you wanted? It’s not like I can control it!”
“Why do you always have to be so sassy?”
“Sassy’s my middle name!”
Astrid considered this for a second and asked, “I thought your middle name was Horrendous?”
“Short for Horrendously Sassy.”
“Haha, very funny.” And she went to tickle him again, but before that, she readjusted her grip, and noticed something. She rolled her hips. “Hiccup…are you–?”
“Yes, don’t draw attention to it.” He blushed again, if it was possible.
“How?! From tickling?!”
“No! A very beautiful girl is sitting on me, and her very shapely bosom is basically right in my face!”
“Stop staring at my shapely bosom! You’re not allowed to!”
“I beg to differ, madam. As your husband, I do declare I am allowed to stare at your shapely bosom! I might even ogle!”
Astrid narrowed her eyes, planning her next attack.
“Tickle me again, I dare you.”
“No…I have to find something else.”
“Do your worst, Shieldmaiden! I can take it!”
She shrugged. “If you say so.” Slowly, she lifted her free hand up to where her other was pinning him down. Then she slid her hands up to his, intertwining their fingers together. This brought her close, where she could see his eyes wide and sparkling with wonder, his chest heaving with excitement. She rolled her hips again, eliciting a whine from his throat.
She met his lips in a kiss, sweet, tender, and deceitful to her intentions.
Hiccup simply thought the game was over, and relaxed, rubbing his thumbs over her knuckles. He could melt into her. He could just stay like this. Laughter, jokes, intimacy, if this is what marriage was, then he was more than pleased. He understood what all the hubbub was about.
Astrid’s delicate tongue caressed his bottom lip, he whimpered again and opened his mouth to her. Their tongues danced a tango, exploring, caressing, thrilling.
Their lips made a loud smack as they pulled away, and Astrid pressed heated kisses to his cheek and jaw. Finally, she came to his throat, and lathed her tongue against it, making his eyes cross.
What had he done to deserve such affection?
Suddenly, Astrid bit his flesh, gnawing on his skin, not enough to bleed, but more than what was sexy.
“Ow…ow…owowowow!!!” Hiccup cried, trying to pull away from her.
She pulled away herself, satisfied with the bruise and marks she had left.
“OW!” Hiccup repeated, emphasis on the ‘ow’.
“That was for telling Snotlout I bite. Don’t want him to think you were lying, do you?”
Hiccup groaned. “He told you I said that? Ugh…”
“I should thank you for it, honestly, I think you scared him away from trying to force a kiss on me.”
“Gee, I feel the gratitude.” He used his shoulder to rub against his neck, since she still had his arms pinned.
Astrid let his hands go, dragging her hands down his arms, down to his chest and then stomach. This made goosebumps raise on his skin and Astrid giggled.
“Alright.” Now with use of his arms, he was able to thrust his hips to buck her off. “If I had known you were going to bully me, I would have reconsidered accidentally marrying you.” He turned on his side, turning his back to her.
“Aww, Hiccup. Don’t be like that!” She rolled over so she spooned behind him, wrapping one leg over his. “I’m sorry if I went too far. I just…feel really relaxed around you. I get goofy.”
“And bitey.”
She giggled and wrapped her arm around him to rest on his stomach. She snuggled her face into his neck, smilingly like a love sick school girl. “You make me really happy, Hiccup. I didn’t think I’d get that with a husband. I thought…before we became friends, I’d either have to marry Snotlout or an older man. Maybe even a man from another tribe, and I’d never see my family again.”
Hiccup rested his hand over hers.
“I didn’t think I could have this. I know it’s only our first night together, but I’m already enjoying it.” She kissed the mark on his neck. “So sorry for being annoying.”
He scoffed. “I’m not actually all that upset.”
“Good!” She grabbed him and pulled him backwards so that he rolled over. Then, he was laying against her side, his head on her chest while she ran fingers through his hair.
For a moment, he wondered if maybe these roles should be switched. Shouldn’t he be holding her? But his face was so close to that shapely bosom he didn’t really care.
Astrid was the type to sleep hugging a pillow, and while Hiccup was certainly more boney than a pillow, he was warm, and he offered that comforting feeling that you can only receive from touch. And as a bonus, Hiccup had elected to go without a shirt, making the skin to skin touch even more intense.
“At the risk of getting myself punched…” Hiccup began.
“Hmm?”
“What was your plan for your wedding night with Snotlout? I can’t imagine you were going in unprepared.”
She laughed, and didn’t punch him like he feared. “Why would you ask that?”
“Curiosity.”
“Well…I had a really really bad plan.”
“Oh?”
“Yep. I was going to barricade myself in the bedroom, using heavy furniture to block the door, and then I was going to sneak out my window, grab my emergency bag I had packed, and take off into the woods to escape from Berk on Stormfly.”
“You were not!”
“I was so! Of course, if the council insisted on escorting me and Snotlout to the bedroom, I would have had to come up with something else. Like, excusing myself to the bathroom and sneaking out the back. Or something like that. Glad I don’t have to worry about it.”
“And where would you have gone, if you had escaped?”
“Not too far, so you and Toothless could find me. I would stay away long enough to be presumed dead and wait to return until Snotlout took another wife.”
“So thirty years, at least.”
“Give or take.”
He sat up so that he could give her a kiss on the cheek. “Well, I’m glad you’re still here.”
“Had I known eloping was in the cards, I would have asked you to marry me months ago.”
“What was all that ‘not wanting to label things’ you said in the hayloft?”
“It was true then. I thought I had time to just goof around. I hate being forced into things. If it’s on my own accord to get out of something, I’d do it in a heartbeat.” She hugged him tightly. “Plus, you’re cute.”
He chuckled. “The ultimate trophy husband, hmm?”
“The biggest catch of them all. And when we solve this dragon raid problem, I’ll be the envy of all the village girls!”
Hiccup smiled at that, but didn’t let his doubts ruin the moment.
The word ‘when’ kept being passed around, when they should be saying ‘if’. He had been confident when his father asked if he could solve the raids, but it was only in comparison to winning a fight against Snotlout. There was still too much uncertainty for Hiccup to be optimistic.
—-
They fell asleep at some point. It wasn’t surprising, given how comfortable the bed was and how relaxed they were in each other’s arms. Hiccup awoke the next morning quite uncomfortable, and sweaty. His arm was numb, as Astrid was laying on it. Her face was pressed against his bare chest. Her legs were tangled with his, giving him a weird cramp in his thigh. He didn’t have any pain in his shins though, and couldn’t remember her kicking him at all.
With his one free hand, he played with her hair, that was half unraveled from her bun.
This was perfect.
Astrid woke not long after him, unsticking her face from his chest, and looking up at him with furrowed brows.
“Morning beautiful,” he said, dreamily.
“Oh hi,” she responded with a sleepy smile. It seemed she had remembered him, and was rather pleased to wake up with him.
She untangled her limbs and started to stretch. “How’d you sleep?”
“Good. Better than I thought. But yesterday was kind of exhausting.”
“I slept hard.” She cracked her neck. “It was pretty nice actually.” She sighed and looked over to him. Then her eyes widened and she started laughing.
“What?” He looked himself over. “Bedhead?”
“Your neck!”
He rubbed the place she had bit him last night. It was sore, as bruises usually were.
She tried to stifle her laughter, but it came out as little giggles. “You have this red ring where my teeth got you, and then the whole thing is purple!”
“And this is funny to you?”
“I’m so sorry!” She guffawed.
“I’m starting to think that you aren’t.”
Astrid only giggled more before pulling him into a warm kiss.
That made it a little better. Besides, it was like his father said. A scar won in a battle not one with his strength, but his wits. And in the grand scheme of life, he felt like he was winning.
—-
Once they were dressed and presentable, hickey withstanding, they prepared to go to the Hofferson household for brunch. However, a note had been tacked to their door.
“Who’s it from?” Asked Astrid.
“My dad. Says that the news of our wedding finally made it all around town, and people feel jipped that there were no celebrations. Looks like everyones bringing a dish to make a veritable Smörgåsbord up at the Great Hall.”
“We should probably go then, right?”
Hiccup sighed. “I guess.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll beat up anyone that gives you a hard time.”
“Thanks. I’ll get the bandages for your knuckles ready when we get back.”
They weren’t that far from the Great Hall, but they might as well live a mile away. Those that weren’t up at the festivities watched as they passed, and giggled as they did so.
The Great Hall was thriving. All sorts of merriment and gaiety were in full swing. Some men were sober, some were tipsy, and some had been drinking since dawn. Songs were sung, laughs were had, and everyone seemed fairly jovial.
Once Hiccup and Astrid entered, several people turned to see who had arrived, and lit up at their appearance.
“The newlyweds!” Stoick shouted over the crowd.
Cheers went up, accompanied by wolf whistles.
“Way to go, lass!” Someone shouted.
“Finally putting that dragon training to use?” Someone else shouted.
Hiccup rubbed his neck self-consciously.
He and Astrid were escorted to a table where the twins and Fishlegs were already seated, then food was brought for them.
“Thank you,” Hiccup said politely.
“So…you guys are like, married or whatever?” Said Tuffnut. “That’s crazy. I thought Astrid and Snotlout were betrothed.”
“They were, doofus,” said Ruffnut. “That’s what Fishlegs was saying earlier?”
“Oh he did? I wasn’t listening. I was thinking about what color my fire would be if I was a dragon, and what it would smell like. It would be green, and smell like fried oysters.”
“Uh…yeah,” Hiccup said, not really knowing what Tuff was rambling about. “We accidentally got married yesterday, and Gothi refused to undo it. So, here we are.”
“Yeah, accident, like we didn’t see the goo goo eyes you two made at each other for like, the last two years.” Said Ruff. “Especially from you, Hiccup. You look like a kitten left out in the rain.”
“I-I-I do not!”
“Do to,” said Tuff. “You get all droopy when you see her. Like this!” And Tuff imitated a love sick smile, complete with batting eyes and a slouched posture.
“I do not!” Hiccup insisted.
“Actually Hiccup…” Fishlegs tried to argue.
Suddenly, the last empty spot at the table was filled as Snotlout took a seat. He looked annoyed.
“Hey Snotlout…?” Hiccup tried to be casual.
“Ugh, if I have to listen to my dad whine about being humiliated in front of the tribe anymore, I’m going to feed myself to a Monstrous Nightmare! The man is infuriating.”
“So…you aren’t mad at me?” Hiccup clarified.
“Oh, I’m mad at you, but I’d rather sit over here than with my family.”
“You’re just in time then!” Said Ruff. She leaned in conspiratorially. “So, how was it?”
“How was what?” Hiccup asked, innocently.
“You know, hiding the pickle?”
“Making a yak with two backs?” Added Tuff.
“Gland-to-gland combat?”
“Ramma jam the slam ham?”
Each euphemism brought more color to Hiccup’s face.
“It was great,” Astrid said, cool as a cucumber. “A little nerve wracking at the beginning, but I think we went 3 or 4 times. Right babe?”
It occurred to Hiccup, after several heart pounding seconds, that she was lying, potentially to make him look good. “Oh. Y-yeah. It was…nice.”
Ruff laughed so loudly that Astrid missed the stricken looks that crossed the boys’ faces.
“And she’s still walking? Damn, Astrid’s tougher than I thought.”
“Man,” said Snotlout under his breath. “Hiccup’s the first one to go to Pound town? Unfair.”
Hiccup was horribly embarrassed, while Astrid just shook her head with amusement.
“With that out of the way, you looking forward to the fight, Hiccup?” Ruffnut asked with a dangerous smile.
The giddy feeling Hiccup had was snuffed out immediately. “Uh…”
“We’ve been training,” Astrid interjected. “Snotlout might have strength, but Hiccup is very fast and nimble. It could be anyone’s fight.”
The table, and those around, burst into laughter.
“Yeah, anyone’s fight…” Hiccup drawled.
Snotlout smirked. “Speed might be helpful if he could use a dagger or something, but this is hand-to-hand. One punch, and I’ll lay him flat.”
Hiccup had finished his meal at this point, scarfing down everything since he hadn’t eaten dinner. Then he tried to sneak away.
“Not so fast, son,” said Stoick, grabbing the back of his shirt.
Hiccup groaned.
Stoick lifted him to stand at the edge of the fireplace, where everyone could see. Then called the crowd to attention.
“My friends and family. I’d like to thank all of you for coming to this celebration of my son’s marriage to Astrid Hofferson.”
There were a handful of cheers.
“Because of the circumstances of the marriage, a formal, traditional ceremony will be happening in the future. You will all have your week-long festival.”
More enthused cheers.
“Furthermore, in two weeks time, Snotlout and Hiccup have agreed to have a fight to settle the matter of honor. Hand-to-hand, no armor or weapons.”
“Why wait to have the wedding after the fight? The lad can’t get married if he’s dead, Stoick!” Someone shouted.
Hiccup paled considerably.
“Now now, the fight isn’t to the death,” Stoick insisted. “But it is a fight nonetheless. These are the terms that the Jorgensons, Hoffersons, and Haddocks have agreed on. So once it’s over, regardless of the winner, I don’t want to hear anymore about it. Gothi has blessed and ordained the marriage, and there’s nothing more to do about it.”
Glancing over the crowd, Hiccup noted that most people were just happy to be partying right now, and the promise of more partying and entertainment.
Only Spitelout was fuming and glaring in the corner.

Random Thoughts on HTTYD RoB S1 (Ep7-13)
Ep7- Hiccup trying to teach Stoick how to ride Toothless is like that one time I tried to teach my grandma how to go back on the TV programming, so she could watch that one novela that passed too late at night for her to watch when it was on normally
She ended up erasing a show my sister had recorded three months prior for when school was over.... So yeah, perhaps Hiccup, I would keep the control over the remote- I mean, Toothless
Stoick is gonna get himself on the wrong side of a well-deserved plasma blast if he keeps being this level of disrespectful to both Toothless and his son
Astrid always has been and always will be Hiccup's favorite person to vent to
Oh, a Thunderdrum huh? I remember you guys from RttE
You know, Stoick's comment about Meatlug, refering to her as a mother, made me wonder. Fishlegs is super needy, his extremely fast attachment to Meatlug makes me think he might've been touch-starved before she appeared in his life. Where are his parents?? Did this kid receive that little affection in his life?? That he's this dependent on Meatlug
I gotta say Im not the biggest fan of how Stoick and the Thunderdrum became partners - it was too easy
And uh, no you didn't listen, otherwise the Thunderdrum wouldn't have ran away
Ep8- Another Stoick/Hiccup episode? Alright
Snotlout doing an impression of Hamish the 1st just gave me such Draco Malfoy vibes, it was weird
Okay, Stoick the heck, that's an awful thing to say to your son
Fishlegs is a great lookout, you guys just might as well be deaf
I love that Gobber immediately understood that Hiccup was upset about the painting - he really is his 2nd dad
Like, I know they were never gonna be too difficult, but these clues are just, extremely simple
"Isn't our friendship treasure enough??" Fishlegs is such a freaking sweetheart i cannot-
We're not gonna question how a viking from that era was able to create such intricate and kind of impossible-looking mechanisms are we?
Wow, the twins and Snotlout were completely useless. Astrid and Fishlegs trying to unbury the rocks and those three just watching as if it was all a mere scene from a novela
Why would only a Hiccup be able to get to the treasure?? Are Hiccups the only smart vikings, is that it?
The easyness with which Stoick picked Hiccup up, I can't - he must be like a feather to him
Ep9- Trador Johann? Don't you mean- traitor Johann??
I'm sorry, I'm going home now
Thornado is not a very original name, but then again, Stoick never stroke me as a very original man either, so we're fine
Is it weird that I find Toothless's deadly sneezes adorable?
The way Tuff and Ruff spoke of Barf&Blech saddened me. They were talking about them as if they were a toy that lost its batteries
What history does Gobber have with Scauldrons
"I spent my whole life trying to kill them. Now look at me," - the "Valka" at the end of this sentence was unspoken but might as well have been said. He was talking to her when he said that and no one will be able to convince me otherwise
Okay, that scene with them extracting the venom from Mildew's butt was extremely unpleasant to me, ngl
Ep10- So this is Heather's introduction? Neat
"Remember, I found it, I get to keep it" that is so messed up, geez
"Hookfang, get your butt over here!" Hookfang promptly flies away - i love this dragon sm, i sweaaaaaar
Oh no, we're going the jealous route...? Save me, please, I don't wanna watch this kind of plot again
Hookfang is still offended about yesterday, this dragon is a gem
The twins just chilling with Barf&Belch on the arena's floor was so nice to see - they looked so comfy
"Ohhhh, Astrid's jealous of the pretty one! Why talk about hens and roosters??" Ya know, given the fact that you'll be in a serious relationship with a chicken in just a couple years, I really don't think you can talk much Tuff
"See ya later, Astrid~~" Aighhhh, why did that whole conversation sound so flirty??
Also, it was so badass of Heather to let the innocent act drop, but still reveal zero about anything - I honestly am clueless to what she's up to
Hiccup is so freaking oblivious, my god
Astrid's anger issues are taking some good space this episode
"This is gonna be awe-sooooome!" Only Tuff
Ep11- Random but kinda cute piece of info - Hookfang likes for his horns to be held to the ground, it apparently calms him
Tuff is such a damn masochist
"Has Astrid been eating dragon-nip again?" Again??
Okay, Astrid dressing up as Heather is a semi-solid plan, I'll take it
Peoples, you should listen to Fishlegs, he's never freaking wrong
Ah okay, they did that thing with Snotlout and Hookfang in the beggining so Astrid could use it now
"-we could be unstoppable! How does that sound?" "Uh, insane, demented, delusional, stupid?" Omg, Hiccup go easy on the old man, damn
They forgave Heather too easily, like c'mon guys - her parents were hostages and suddenly you're all besties?
Welp, I know we'll get to see more of Heather in the future, so I'll just wait for that before judging more
Ep12 - Gobber is the one training with Hiccup - one more tip for "Gobber being Hiccup's 2nd dad" jar
Aaand, Spitelout is back - help, i want him gone
Snolout beats Astrid? In axe throwing?? How????
"Why don't you sit down, Spitelout?" "Ohhhhhh~" pfft, nice Stoick
Also, Spitelout would definitely be a PTA Karen parent in today's society, you cannot convince me otherwise
Hicctooth is their ship name, isn't it? Is Snotlout behind every single ship name in the fandom?? I know Hiccup was the one who said it, but it was because of Snotlout's Snotfang
"What? He started it!.. when we were five.." So before that you guys got along? I wanna see some cute toddler cousins playing together
I'm sorry but Astrid doing flips on Stormfly's back is a lot cooler than Toothless flipping in the air by himself, she deserved that point
"Snotlout your dad looks reaaally mad right now~!" "What would you know? He always looks like that!" That's uh, really bad to know
Snotlout actually turned to the scoreboard when Hiccup told him to
Hiccup's been such a little gremlin this ep
What the heeeeck, the difference between Stoick and Spitelout! Stoick literally just said "No pressure" with a smile on his face, meanwhile, Spitelout freaking threatens his son over the goddamn game
I really really hate that man, and yeah, I understand why people say he's worse in RoB, his demeanor is a lot meaner and crueler here
Watching Lout and Hiccup interact before the race reminded me of their cute interactions in RttE - it's ridiculous how much their relationship changes
And Snotlout's mini-panic attack (can we call it that?) during the race when Hiccup passed him reminded me of RttE's "Not Lout" - if you know, you know
These two have been kissing consistently, apparently, ever since this show and only got together near the end of rtte? Whyy
Ep13- Those three - four, if you count Toothless - eating together feels like another possible image to add to my "Gobber is 2nd dad" jar
Poor Toothless actually looked pretty scared there.. With an iron tail, he does have good reason to fear lightning, honestly
Mildew..... Hi, really missed you..
#justice4toothless - the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself deserves better
Hiccup has been exuding "I'm surrounded by idiots" vibes this episode
After Toothless got captured, this episode's plot resumed to a copy of the end of httyd1 I think
Can't really think of more to say on this one except that I'm glad Tuff and Snotlout put Thor's statue in front of Mildew's house
I wonder, are we gonna focus on the other riders at some point? We kinda had an episode more focused on Snotlout, and Astrid has the 2nd spotlight in plenty of them, but it is all still mostly Hiccup-centered
I wanna see the twins actually doing something and just more Fishlegs generally, because that kid is sho gosh darn cute

How To Train Your Dragon: A Soaring Success
[Note: I wrote this review as a persuasive writing assignment for GCSE English Language.]
Being a childhood fan of the book series by Cressida Cowell and formerly a staunch hater of the film adaptation on grounds of unfaithfulness, I was pleasantly surprised to find my unreasoning “But in the book -” bluster didn’t hold up. The basic premise is the same: a nerdy Viking boy named Hiccup befriends a dragon he calls Toothless; (mis)adventure ensues. The film does seem to have a more serious tone than I remember in the books, with genuine heart and realistic drama to offset the comedic antics. But what won me over was that it took inspiration from the books, yes, but never tried to stick to them fanatically or maliciously disrespected them, instead making the absolute most of its different medium and tackling the premise with its own unique flare.
You’ll see it how it makes the most of being an animated movie right from the start. True to Dreamworks’s reputation, the animation is gorgeous. Lush greenery in the forests; chilly, choppy, practically photorealistic ocean; weathered wood and stone surfaces making up the Viking village of Berk; intricate fabric; and spellbinding lighting effects all help to immerse you in the world - even the dragons themselves, especially the irresistibly cute Toothless, have as plausible proportions and anatomy as possible borrowing physical and behavioural traits from many real creatures while maintaining a cartoonish uniqueness. They actually felt like dragons to me for the first time in a long time, not just horses/dogs/etc. with a fantasy filter. The classic ‘fire-breathing winged vertebrate quadruped’ formula and aforementioned animal traits keep their creative designs grounded, but generic dragons these are not. Oh, and the humans’ designs and movements radiate personality and charm too. The voice acting, sound effects, and John Powell’s soundtrack are equally breathtaking. You’ll be humming the themes for days. Standout scenes of these two aspects harmonizing beautifully are the sequence of Hiccup and Toothless slowly building mutual trust (backed by the touching instrumental track “Forbidden Friendship”, aka the point the abundance of good reviews clicked), Hiccup’s exhilarating first proper flight on Toothless (backed by “Test Drive”, which I can only describe as the pure terror, wonder and majesty of flying in musical form), and his later “A Whole New World”-esque ride with his love interest Astrid (backed by “Romantic Flight”). In a bold choice they have barely any dialogue between them. If you want to know what flying feels like, watch this movie.
Hiccup and Toothless really carry the story, their personalities and unlikely friendship instantly compelling. Apprentice smith Hiccup is a witty, intelligent, mechanically inclined, somehow both wise and naive teenage outcast whose warlike society - his well-intentioned, but stubborn and overprotective father Stoick the Vast in particular - dismisses his lack of grace and physical ability, leaving him yearning to prove himself. Killing a dragon is considered a rite of passage, since the fearsome beats conduct regular raids of food on Berk and destroy property. A war has raged between the species as long as anyone can remember. So he manages to capture the fastest, scariest dragon known to the Vikings: a Night Fury. Nobody’s ever seen one up close, or at least done so and lived to tell the tale. Except the Night Fury is discovered to be no more intrinsically evil than any other animal and expresses his curious, clever, friendly personality to the extent that Hiccup can’t stand to take such a humanlike life. Toothless is not only a lovable pet, he soon becomes the boy’s best friend. Guilty about disabling the draconic deuteragonist’s flight when his invention captured him, Hiccup works to restore it through science and stumbles upon the art of dragon riding and revolutionary idea of actually understanding dragons in the process. The rest of Berk... does not take this well. Especially anti-dragon hardliner Stoick, who embodies everything Hiccup isn’t. Did I mention Stoick’s the chief of the tribe?
I’ll admit, the plot can be predictable at times. You know Hiccup’s secret will come out. You know he and his dad will have a big falling out and then reconcile. You know the skills he was mocked for at the start will allow him to succeed. Astrid as a character was interesting, a cool, confident foil to Hiccup, yet refreshingly openminded and astute compared to the other Vikings. But her romantic suplot seemed rushed and a little tacked on for the sake of it.
There were still enough twists to keep me engaged. Blacksmith and dragon defence trainer Gobber’s markedly more likeable than his book counterpart and genuinely entertaining. I didn’t think I would like Stoick, but he did have moments of sincerity and vulnerability that made all the difference. His relationship with Hiccup was a realistic one of ultimately unconditional love and care strained by poor communication; conflicting views and interests; disappointment and disrespect on Stoick’s side; and insecurities clouding Hiccup’s judgement, exacerbated by societal pressure; culminating in a heartbreaking rejection that gravely hurts both of them. They echo each other throughout the film, showing their similarities. In one scene they attempt a hilariously/painfully awkward heart-to-heart where neither is able to just be a normal human being. Every scene felt perfectly paced, neither too long too too short, and little parallels like that tied all the character arcs together into a cohesive character-driven story.
The human and dragon war turns out to have human and dragon aggressors. Although peace and understanding is great, sometimes violence is unavoidable. To my infinite relief the final message is not another easy repeat of ‘Be yourself’: Hiccup already knew that, he wanted to defeat dragons with brains, not brawn, and have his individual strengths celebrated. Instead it’s more along the lines of ‘Compassion and a progressive mindset can be more beneficial than irrational traditionalism and fear’, plus a dash of the real meaning of courage and power of friendship thrown in. And Toothless and Gobber’s prosthetics demonstrate a mature approach to disability poignantly brought to the fore in the denouement.
In conclusion, if you can suspend your disbelief and accept a little unoriginal storytelling, go ahead and enjoy the vibrant characters, entrancing world, gripping action, emotional rollercoaster (or should that be dragon ride?) and royal feast for your senses that is How To Train Your Dragon.

Hiccstrid for either 41, 42, or 56!
Okay, I went with 41 and it turned out to be a bit more than a drabble, and I’m not sure if I should apologise or just hope that you like it lol.
Prompt: Washing their hair.

Need a hand?
Hiccup let out a sigh of relief as the last Hooligan exited the hut, effectively ending his  duties as acting chief – for now at least. He had just spent the last few hours listening to the ranting and demands of practically every viking in Berk. How his father managed to do this everyday was beyond him.
“Come on bud, let's get out of here,” Hiccup said to Toothless. The Night Fury warbled in response, stretching his wings eagerly. Together they exited the hut, coming to a small clearing where they could take into the sky. As Toothless launched into the air, a voice called out Hiccup’s name. “Faster,” Hiccup urged. He didn’t dare look back, if he did then the excuse of not having heard the person wouldn’t stand. “That was close,” Hiccup said to Toothless. “What do you say bud, should we go relax at the cove? Maybe take a quick dip?”
Toothless turned to give him a gummy grin, clearly loving his suggestion. Hiccup chuckled, straightening up in the saddle to enjoy the wind whipping through his hair. It felt great to finally be free of chiefly duties, though if Stoick heard, there would surely be a lecture waiting for him upon his return.
“Here we are, bud,” Hiccup told Toothless, looking down at the cove. They glided to a stop, coming to land on the sand when an excited squawk made them turn around. Stormfly came bounding towards them, wings flapping as she bobbed her head up and down with enthusiasm. Toothless grinned, giving his own rumble in greeting. He waited for Hiccup to dismount and then rushed off to play with the Deadly Nadder. Hiccup watched them go, smiling at the sight of them chasing each other. If Stormfly was here then that meant Astrid would be there as well. He scanned the cove, seeing no sign of her. “Astrid?” he called out. “Are you here?”
A curse came from behind some boulders and Hiccup turned to see Astrid dart back behind one of the larger ones. He took a few steps towards where she hid. “Astrid, what are you–”
“Don’t come any closer,” he heard her plead.
That made him stop instantly, a flush coming up his neck and onto his cheeks. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to bathe here, because I didn’t want people to laugh at me at the hot springs,” came her reply. Hiccup frowned, but then remembered that Astrid had a broken arm, meaning that simple tasks such as washing herself, would be quite difficult.
“Okay – but why would they laugh at you?” Hiccup asked curiously.
“Because I can barely do anything myself at the moment, and I hate it! I can’t even wash my own hair!” she exclaimed. “I don’t like people seeing me struggle.”
This was something Hiccup could relate to, considering he had a prosthetic leg and needed a lot of assistance with bathing for a while. By now he had gotten used to doing basic tasks, and had ways of ensuring that he didn’t slip in the hot springs without needing someone to help him in or out. Something he couldn’t relate to, was giving much attention to his hair. Unlike Astrid, who took great pride in her hair and braided it neatly every day, Hiccup just washed his hair with water and hoped for the best. But clearly it was something that Astrid needed, so Hiccup decided to offer help. “Did you ah...want me to help?” he asked in a nervous voice, hoping she wouldn’t take it the wrong way. “I won’t tell anyone,” he added quickly.
There was a moment of silence before Astrid peeked out from behind the rock. “Help with what – exactly?”
Hiccup hesitated for a moment. “Um, washing your hair? I could help with that – if you want of course. No pressure if you don’t want to, it was just a suggestion I–”
“Okay.”
Hiccup blinked. “Uh...did you say yes?”
Astrid gave a frustrated groan. “Yes, I said yes Hiccup. I need my hair washed. I haven’t undone this braid since breaking my arm a few days ago and now it’s oily and itchy. I tried to undo it with my one hand and I just ended up knotting it.”
“I could untangle it, but first...you will need to come out of there.” Hiccup waited, hearing a rustle before she appeared out from behind the boulder. She was still dressed, though free of her pauldrons and studded skirt. Her broken arm was still in the cast that Gothi had made for her, cradled in the fabric where it had to stay until it healed.
“I can’t even undress myself. My mum said she would help me have a sponge bath but she went with dad on the hunting trip and didn’t have enough time. I’m going crazy, I just need to have clean hair,” she said with a glum expression. Hiccup nodded, looking down at the small bag that held her soap.
“Do you...want me to help you undress, or–”
“No!” Astrid said. A scowl appeared on her face, making Hiccup hold up his palms in surrender.
“I will keep my eyes closed. You have my word.” He waited as she considered his words, blue eyes surveying him carefully.
“Okay,” she finally said. “But if you even think of peeking, I will shove my axe where the sun doesn’t shine.”
Hiccup gulped. “Got it – no peeking, none whatsoever. You have my word.”
Astrid looked happy with that and approached him. Hiccup glanced at her sling warily. “What can we do with your arm. I don’t want to hurt it.”
Astrid peered down at it. “Oh, yeah we will probably have to take it off somehow, otherwise we won’t get this top off. The bindings can stay on.”
Hiccup nodded, flushing bright red. “And um...the bottoms.”
Astrid narrowed her eyes. “They can stay on. I just don’t want my top to get wet.”
Again, Hiccup nodded. Unsure of what else to say.
“If I lie down by the edge there, I should be able to dangle my head over the water for you to wash it.” Hiccup glanced over to where she pointed, following her as she led him over there. “Okay, now help me take this sling off first.” She turned, allowing Hiccup to undo the tie around her neck with trembling fingers. The sling fell away and she gave a hiss of pain, cradling the injured arm with her good one.
“Are you okay?” he asked in a worried voice. She gave a brief nod of confirmation, though Hiccup could tell she was trying to hide the pain she was in. “Do you want me to lift the top over your head, or?”
Astrid took a deep breath. “Just take the good arm out first, then we should be able to pull it over my head and carefully past the broken one.”
Hiccup bit his lip, closing his eyes as he gently took her good arm, guiding it out of the shirt awkwardly. It was incredibly hard to do with his eyes closed, but he had made a promise and it was one he was going to keep. After a lot of cursing and different attempts, they’d finally managed to take it off. Now he just needed to undo the braid that was currently in a tangle of knots due to her efforts at doing it with one hand. His fingers gently unthreaded the braid, snagging at the oily strands to release the knots. “There, all done.”
Astrid turned and laid down on the rocky ledge, her head half hanging over. “Okay – I’m ready.” Hiccup blinked, shaking his head slightly to clear his thoughts at seeing her hair unbound for the first time since he’d known her. Using one hand to cradle her neck, he used the other to scoop water onto the blonde locks, repeating the action until all her hair was fully drenched. He took the soap out of the bag she’d brought, dipping it into the water before rubbing it onto her hair to form bubbles, using both hands to massage it in. The scent of the soap was familiar, consisting of honey, milk and some type of flower that grew in the meadows outside of Berk. It was a scent that Hiccup quite liked, though he wasn’t sure if it was because of the actual smell or if it was because it reminded him of Astrid.
He rinsed her hair, and gently wrung it out before helping her sit up. He squeezed his eyes shut, not wanting to risk peeking. “Is that good enough?” he asked.
“It is, it feels so much better now,” she said happily. “Thank you so much.”
“No problem,” Hiccup replied. “I don’t normally wash my hair so I just wanted to check that I actually did it right.”
“You don’t wash your hair? You should try that soap there, it is amazing and makes your hair so soft and shiny.”
Hiccup shrugged, casting his eyes away. “Maybe I will. But first, lets get that top back on before you catch a chill.” He helped her into the top, finding it a bit easier this time around and then reattached her sling.
He removed his tunic, feeling slightly self conscious at his lean frame which made him grateful that Astrid was averting her eyes. She used her one good hand to scoop water on his hair until it was evenly wet, dipping the bar of soap in the water to rub against his hair. Luckily for her, his hair was short which made it easy to wash with one hand, unlike her thick, long locks.
“There you go. All done,” Astrid told him, stowing the soap back in the bag. Hiccup sat up, shaking his head so that droplets of water sprayed everywhere. “Hey!” Astrid shrieked.
“Sorry,” he said earnestly. “Force of habit. I learnt it from Toothless.”
At the mention of his name, Toothless paused from where he was playing with Stormfly, snorting loudly at Hiccup using him as an excuse.
“Hey...um, I just wanted to say thanks for, you know...helping me,” Astrid said shyly.
Hiccup smiled. “No problem, and I meant what I said. I won’t tell anyone.”
Astrid lips quirked up. “Your hair definitely suits being washed properly, it’s gone all frizzy and unruly...I kind of like it like that.”
Hiccup straightened, his ego inflating at the compliment.
“We better get going though, Berk will be wondering where their acting chief has got to,” she said, getting up to stand. Hiccup reluctantly did the same, following her over to where Toothless and Stormfly waited. Together, they mounted the dragons and launched into the sky, leaving behind the cove.

All-Nighter
Hiccup and Astrid spend the night together for the first time. Like Heaven AU. They’re 13 here and have been friends for just a few months! Friendship fluff, plus some Hiccup being a total Mama’s boy.
“Are you sure it’s okay with your mom if you sleep over?” Valka asked as she laid a plate full of barbecue chicken, corn, and mashed potatoes in front of Astrid. “I don’t want her worrying about you.”
“It’s okay,” replied Astrid, hugging her towel around her. With school out for the summer, she and Hiccup had planned an all-nighter. “I just have to be home by noon tomorrow for beach volleyball.”
“Are you cold, dear?” Valka frowned as she noticed Astrid shiver. “Hiccup has plenty of sweatshirts if you’d like one. You two probably wear about the same size.”
“I’ll be okay,” said Astrid. “Where is Hiccup, by the way?”
“He wanted to shower before he ate. He said he’s done swimming for tonight.”
Astrid bit into a chicken wing. “These are good. Did you make them, Mrs. Haddock?”
“Call me Valka. And no, Stoick actually made them. I’ve never been much of a cook.”
“Yeah, me neither. My mom tries to teach me, but I’m no good,” laughed Astrid.
Valka sat across from Astrid. “Let me give you some advice, dear. Marry a man who’s good in the kitchen and you’ll be set for life.”
Astrid laughed. “I’ll try.”
Smiling, Valka dug into her own plate of food. “By the way, I want to thank you for reaching out to Hiccup when we first moved here. He’s a very sweet boy, but he’s always had such a hard time making friends. You don’t know how happy he was when he came home and told me you invited him to the Zipplebacks concert.”
“Well, I’m lucky to have him as a friend,” Astrid said.
Just then, Stoick appeared on the patio. “I got the iced tea if any of yer want any,” he announced, holding up a tall pitcher of homemade iced tea.
“I’ll have some, love,” Valka responded.
“Could I have some, too?” asked Astrid.
“Of course, lass.” Stoick poured both Valka and Astrid a glass before sitting down beside his wife.
“I was just telling Astrid how much we appreciate her reaching out to Hiccup. She’s been a great friend to him since we moved here.”
“Speaking of Hiccup.” Stoick gestured to the back door, where Hiccup emerged.
“Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad. Hey, Astrid.” Hiccup took his place at the table. “Can I have some corn? And a couple pieces of chicken?”
“No broccoli?” questioned Valka.
Hiccup wrinkled his nose. “No, thank you.”
“Iced tea?” Stoick offered.
“Yes, please.”
The rest of the meal passed quickly as the little group talked and laughed together. After asking to be excused, Hiccup and Astrid hurried inside and up to Hiccup’s bedroom.
“Can I use your shower?” asked Astrid, digging through her backpack to find her hairbrush and clean clothes.
“Yeah, go for it. I’ll start looking through Netflix for a good movie to watch.” Hiccup settled onto his bed and grabbed the TV remote.
Astrid vanished into the bathroom, reappearing twenty minutes later in a pair of cozy pajamas. “Mind if I sit with you?”
“Of course not.” Hiccup patted the empty space beside him. “Come on up.” After she climbed onto his mattress, he said, “But if we decide to give up on the all-nighter tonight, which we probably should if you have a volleyball game tomorrow, you can sleep in the guest room if you want. Or you can stay here. The choice is all yours.”
“I’ll probably stay.” She pulled the covers to her chin and settled against a fluffy pillow. “I’ve always thought it would be fun share a room with someone.”
“That’s fine with me.”
“Did you find anything to watch?” asked Astrid, nodding towards the TV.
“Yeah. I thought we could watch Thor.”
“It figures you’d pick something that relates to Norse mythology.”
“You can pick the next one,” Hiccup promised. “We have plenty of time. It’s only nine o’ clock.”
“Deal.”
“Also, my dad bought microwave popcorn. If you want some, I can go make it before I start the movie.”
“Popcorn sounds good.” Astrid slipped out from beneath the covers. “I’ll come with you.”
“Okay.” Hiccup led Astrid to the kitchen, where they popped two bags of popcorn and poured it into a big bowl. “We have M&Ms, too. I’ll bring them with us because we might want some after the popcorn.”
“I could go for M&Ms.” Astrid grabbed the popcorn while Hiccup found the candy. “By the way, I hung my swimsuit in your bathroom to dry,” she said as they walked back upstairs. “I hope that’s okay.”
“Of course. Just don’t forget to take it home with you tomorrow.”
“I’ll try not to, but if I do, I have a couple more in my closet.” She settled atop the mattress.  “You know, I wanted to get a bikini to add to my collection this summer, but my mom said I’m too young even though literally every other girl our age is wearing them.”
“I can’t relate,” laughed Hiccup, climbing back onto his bed after Astrid.
“It’s just frustrating because I’m embarrassed enough to be the only girl on my volleyball team who doesn’t wear a bra yet. If I had a bikini, I could at least pretend I have boobs.” She paused. “Sorry, this is probably weird for you.”
“No,” shrugged Hiccup. “I get what you’re saying. I was the shortest boy in our grade this year. I’ve always been. My mom says I’ll catch up to everyone else eventually, but I’m tired of it. I mean, even you’re taller than me.”
“Only by an inch or two,” said Astrid. “But both your parents are tall, so you’re probably gonna end up tall, too. You might just be a late bloomer like I clearly am.”
“I hope so. I’ve always been small and skinny, though. My dad calls me a talking fishbone. I wish I was bigger like him. He’s 6’9” and almost 400 pounds. And here I am at five feet tall and barely 110 pounds.”
“I’m 5’2”, so you’ll catch up to me soon.” Astrid grabbed a handful of popcorn. “But anyway, are you gonna start the movie or what?”
“I forgot about the movie for a second,” said Hiccup, pressing the play button on the remote. “There we go. Do you want the light off or on?”
“Off would be good.”
Hiccup reached over to turn out his bedside lamp before reaching into the popcorn bowl and focusing on the TV.
Astrid’s eyes opened as a bright ray of sun shone through the curtains, signaling that it was morning. For a moment, she was surprised to find herself pressed against a warm body. However, as she fully awakened, she came to realize that the warm body was Hiccup, and remembered that they’d had a sleepover.
“Hey, Astrid.” Hiccup twisted around. “I tried to give you space last night, but I suppose you like to cuddle.” He let out a soft laugh.
Blushing, Astrid noticed that her arm was draped across Hiccup’s middle and quickly withdrew it. Judging by their current position, she guessed that she’d been lying with her head against his shoulder and her torso pressed into his back while she slept. “I’m sorry.” She slid back to her side of the bed.
“Don’t be sorry. It was kind of nice.” Hiccup paused. “Don’t go spreading this around, but I’m kind of a big Mama’s boy and I used to cuddle with my mom every night before bed. I only stopped a few years ago, so it was good to…” He trailed off. “With you,” he quickly added.
“There’s nothing wrong with being a Mama’s boy,” said a new voice.
Hiccup and Astrid looked up to see Valka in the doorway.
“Oh, hey, Mom,” greeted Hiccup.
“Good morning, loves. It’s just past ten-thirty, so I thought I’d check in to see if you were awake. How did the two of you sleep?” She pressed a kiss against Hiccup’s forehead.
“Fine,” replied Hiccup, hugging Valka.
“Great,” said Astrid with a yawn.
“Still sleepy, dear?”
Astrid nodded and buried herself in the covers.
“Well, there’s breakfast downstairs if either of you want any. And Astrid, sweetheart, don’t forget your volleyball game.”
“Can Hiccup come?” Astrid asked.
“Can I?” echoed Hiccup.
“I’m going to have to say no,” answered Valka. “You have a lot of chores you still need to finish. Your room needs to be vacuumed, the rafts in the pool needs to be put away, your bathroom needs to be cleaned, and you have to work on getting through your summer reading list.”
“Can’t I do all that tomorrow?”
“No, love. You’ve already procrastinated.”
Hiccup groaned.
“Maybe you can go to Astrid’s next game, but right now I need you to stay on top of your chores. Alright?”
“Fine,” he sighed.
“Thank you, dear. I’ll see you in the kitchen when you’re ready to eat.” Giving Hiccup one more kiss, Valka left the room.
Hiccup relaxed against the pillows for a few minutes before sliding off the bed. “Okay, Astrid, I’m gonna go grab breakfast. Are you coming?”
No response.
“Astrid?”
Still no response.
Hiccup peeked beneath the covers to find Astrid sound asleep. He considered waking her, but she looked too peaceful to disturb. Her lips were ever-so-slightly curved into a smile, her hands clutched a fluffy pillow, and her chest rose and fell with each soft breath she took. Clearly she needed the extra rest, and clearly she was comfortable snuggled amongst his bedding.
Sighing, Hiccup reached over and tugged the covers back up to her nose. He then set an alarm on his phone so she wouldn’t miss her game and headed towards the door. But as soon as he had his hand on the knob, he glanced over at Astrid one last time. She made his oversized bed look so cozy, so inviting, that he slowly turned around. Biting his lip, he climbed in next to her, cautiously rested his chin on her shoulder, and closed his eyes.
Breakfast could wait.

I've never really posted any of my fan art on here before so here is a collection of some of my HTTYD art haha lol
Tumblr media
This is the first drawing I did after rewatching HTTYD 2 and I wanted to give Ruffnut a makeover so that bitch did get one! I gave her Zippleback shoulder armour things and I really think they missed an opportunity but hey, if everyone was a genius then I would be out of a job (bitch you got no job now the fuck you talking about)
Tumblr media
Next up is a character design! As you Pagans may already know, I am abso-fucking-lutely besotted with our smol Snotlout and in my writings which are currently on hold due to my favourite seasonal festivity, um, uh Seasonal Depression :) this is Halla, Snotlout's Mother and because Hiccup and Snotlout are cousins in the majority of my AUs, she is also Valka's older sister. This idea came to me because Valka has beautiful blue eyes and well, our favourite bastard also has beautiful blue eyes. Halla is HEAVILY inspired by the Vikings character Lagatha, so she is obviously a great nearly legendary shield-maiden, and though my backstory for her isn't complete, I assume she takes little to no shit from assholes and most likely divorced Spitelout. (Because, by the Gods, he is THE Asshole™)
But he didn't always used to be an asshole. Haha lol bruh
Tumblr media
Here we see a young Spitelout simping over a young Halla, who looks rather unimpressed at whatever bullshit he's throwing at her. Also IM simping over the young Stoick I drew because damn, I'd let him tie me up if he was looking at me like that
Um, Chile✨👁️👄👁️✨ anyways so-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now here are my designs of the Riders parents when they were younger! I am rather poor at character designing and I am only capable at drawing heads and shoulders constantly (I ain't about no knees, toes or torsos)
So first is Siggy and Nuffnut. Now I've internally redesigned Siggy to be a complete replica of Floki from Vikings because I love him soo much and I just want to write about a character with that personality and humour. I haven't drawn her new style but I will soon, she looks too sane rn. But Nuffnut I like a lot. In all of my AU he dies when the twins are around twelvish I guess, probably in battle or something or other, which is why I think Tuffnut would lock his hair and get piercings to pay tribute to his dad.
Next on the roster is Fishback and Heidi. Fishback is like the opposite to Fishlegs besides their curiosity for knowledge and dragons, and Fishlegs gets his tenderness and all that stuff from his mother. That's really I got for these two.
Then Iric and Eira. Iric cannot cook and has a love for axes that is near obsessive, also the headband he's wearing is the one Astrid wears haha lol bruh. Eira is also a shield-maiden and Astrid is like her carbon copy, except Eira has brown eyes haha lol bruh.
And finally I did Spitelout and Halla. Really, Halla is just Berk's Baddie Bitch and Spitelout is just simp that got lucky.
I didn't do Stoick and Valka because fuck you that's why sorry I'm just really lazy bitch sack me haha lol bruh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this is where you see my obsession over a certain smol man called Snotlout. Ee yikes. He's crying a lot because I am still really over Race to Fireworm island and y'all know the drill that if you have a favourite character, that bitch has got to suffer because you have to use someone to vent on bitch haha lol bruh. Theres two drawings on the same page that contradict each other where it's Spitelout being a good father at the bottom and being an abusive cunt at the top. I both am obsessed over redemption and revenge and I still can't choose which one Spitelout deserves. (Bitch probably revenge but okay)
Also for all the goes out there I did do some Eretlout because that shit is slept on. Hope you like haha lol bruh. Snotlout does give me bratty bottom vibes and is definitely a touch-starved bitch. Eret is also HENCH and Jesus, imagine that voice in the bedroom like oh lord im a boutta bust! Smol touch-starved bitch and Tol British-boi hunk. Proper nice proper bargain
I also gave RTTE Snotlout a redesign. Gave him scars, an emo-fringe and a little pony-tail thing. Haha lol Bruh
My favourite two are definitely Snotlout enjoying a nice flight with hiccup and toothless in back ground. And of course, the angriest picture I've ever drawn- SHEESH boo you mad! Betta be yo daddy you screaming at and I ain't talking about Eret. 👁️👄👁️
And there it is, my shitty fan art page haha lol bruh bye

IMDB summary for the episode. (Five of my sentences are similar to lines in the episode.) And it is below.
Upon seeing Spitelout walk into the Great Hall, Hiccup growled under his breath, which attracted the attention of both Toothless and Astrid, who were sitting closest to him.
Toothless looked up at Hiccup, while Astrid said, “Did you just growl?” There was a pause and then she said, “Oh.”
It was no secret to Astrid that Hiccup had absolutely no affection for Spitelout. This was a tribesman he deeply disliked. Hated even. Yeah, hated was a great word to put it.
“What?” Snotlout asked from across the table.
 “Nothing,” Hiccup said gently.
“Ah, boyo, there you are!” Spitelout exclaimed, when he finally reached their table.
Hiccup growled under his breath again. Astrid could feel Hiccup tense at Spitelout being here.
Astrid saw Snotlout tense and her own dislike of Spitelout made her breathe out hard through her nose like a very angry dragon.
 “Hi, dad,” Snotlout said, nervously.
“Boyo, come sit with the Jorgensons. You should be sitting with your clan!” Spitelout exclaimed.
And then Spitelout placed his hand heavily but briefly on Snotlout’s shoulder.
Hiccup growled, loudly. Enough that he was heard.
Not enough that Spitelout made a note of that.
Snotlout said nervously, “No, thanks, dad. I’m already eating with my friends.”
 Spitelout scoffed.
“Nonsense,” Spitelout said. “You can come sit with your family!”
Spitelout put his hand on Snotlout’s shoulder again.
“Hey, asshole!” Hiccup exclaimed, finally having enough. He said it quite loudly, not caring that everyone in the Hall would be able to hear him.
“Yeah, you,” Hiccup said, directly to Spitelout. He even pointed sharply at Spitelout. “First of all, remove your hand from Snotlout’s shoulder. Now.”
He said this forcefully, sharply, and a growl was very apparent.
During the pause while Hiccup waited for Spitelout to remove his hand, he noticed that the Hall’s general noise level had decreased. Spitelout removed his hand and then placed it on his own chest.
Finally, Hiccup spoke again, “Why don’t you listen to your child properly for a change? He said he didn’t want to sit with your sorry excuse for a parent. Snotlout is perfectly fine sitting with a group of people who love and accept him for who he is. And if you don’t like that, you can just drop dead. Leave us.”
Spitelout looked shocked by this, but started to walk away. Hiccup had begun to continue to eat his meal when there was a loud crash and sounds of gasping nearby. He noticed the twins (who flanked Snotlout on the other side of the table) shoot up immediately at this.
Hiccup saw his own father rush over to the spot causing the commotion.
 “What happened?” Hiccup asked.
“You know when you told Spitelout to drop dead?” Tuffnut asked.
 “Yeah?” Hiccup said.
“I think he did!” Tuffnut exclaimed, sounding very enthusiastic about the whole thing.
“Bro, I told you! Hiccup is a wizard!” Ruffnut exclaimed. This was said far too loudly.
 “Shh!” Fishlegs said.
“Guys, shut up!” Astrid said, sharply.
“Spitelout Jorgenson is dead!” Stoick announced, projecting his voice loud enough for the whole Hall to hear him.
Hiccup was suddenly aware of a whole village’s worth of people staring at him. Hiccup could have sworn he heard polite clapping.
“Well done, lad!” someone shouted. “He was a jerk!”
“Stoick, your son is a wizard!” another person exclaimed.
“Uh, that was a coincidence!” Hiccup exclaimed.
“Mm hmm,” Tuffnut said, but said in a way that was humoring Hiccup and not believing him.
 “Shut up, Tuffnut!” Astrid whispered.
“Are we supposed to have a trial for this?” someone asked.
“I mean, we’re all already here!” exclaimed another one.
Toothless made a questioning noise at Hiccup, as if asking him, “Hey, do you wanna flee? You kinda look like you wanna flee.”
Hiccup instead placed his hand on Toothless’s nose.
“Can I stay seated or…?” Hiccup asked.
“You’re fine where you are, lad,” Gobber said, having chosen to stand up and stand near Hiccup. “Let’s get this nonsense over with.” He then spoke to the Hall: “The way I see it, Hiccup was merely telling Spitelout to leave Snotlout alone and to respect his say on the matter, what Spitelout chose to do after that, the dying, is on Spitelout.”
Astrid was the first one to shout, “Agreed!”
Toothless on Hiccup’s other side roared in agreement.
There were numerous other Hooligan tribe members expressing their agreement with this.
The twins had managed to get several people to agree that Hiccup indeed was at least witchcraft-adjacent.
Five and a half minutes after the trial had started, it was over.
“So, it looks like the tribe finds Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III guilty of both murder and witchcraft with regards to Spitelout Jorgenson,” Stoick said. “But the tribe is fairly happy about this.”
A pause while multiple people exclaimed things:
“Again, he was a jerk! Good riddance!”
“I’m quite happy to be a widow! Hiccup did me a favor!”
 “Hiccup is a good lad!”
A dragon roar from a certain Night Fury.
“So, there is technically no sentence for either,” Stoick continued. “Just the tribe’s gratitude, and it seems like we are not concerned with Hiccup’s association with witchcraft, so that sentence is waived.”
“Hiccup being magic is awesome!” Tuffnut exclaimed.
 The tribe cheered.

Uneasy Are The (Woman's) Shoulders That Wear The Chief's Cloak
Summary: Lesbean Hiccstrid. The line of Chieftains on Berk has always been predominantly male. Either the chiefdom was passed from father to son or the usurper at the time happened to be a man as well. That changes when Stoick names his only born child, a daughter, his heir. After his passing, Hiccup struggles with feelings of anxiety and Astrid is there to whisk them away.
Rating: General
Characters: Hiccup, Astrid
Pairing: Hiccstrid
Words: 2 113
Author’s Notes: At first this was going to be called "In A Man's World", but then I thought of this title last minute and I liked it better. Even if it's a mouthful.
Inspired by a friend.
Constructive criticism is appreciated!
Enjoy!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her hands are usually so steady. When mapping their known world, they do not tremble as she places every careful detail. In the forge, as every beat of the hammer meets hot metal, the force does not make their grip falter. Even high in the sky, when she and Toothless are one with the clouds, they are firmly rooted on the saddle. They do not give in no matter how wild their tricks and rolls may get.
But now, her hands tremble.
Just weeks ago, in the aftermath of Stoick's passing, his daughter and only child has succeeded him. It is exactly as he wished would happen when he named her his heir shortly after her birth.
It means Hiccup bears a big responsibility from now on. One she'd always hoped she would never need to call hers. She'd pushed the mere notion of her as her father's successor so far away that she'd fled in a panic the morning Stoick the Vast decided that his daughter was ready.
But her fears have come true and she has become Berk's most recent Chief. Having actually arrived at this, to her unexpected, chapter in her life, she would've preferred to have had her father here to guide her. She is completely unprepared. Neither mentally, nor emotionally.
If she knew fleeing from Berk that morning would've lead to this outcome, she might have chosen a different path. Not that she regrets having Eret, Son of Eret, or Valka in her life now. Or the entire pack from the Sanctuary.
In her eyes, she isn't her father and she can never live up to him. How can you become someone that great when you're not? The people of the Hooligan tribe loved him and, up until five whole years ago, they despised her. How can she lead a people she isn't sure will even follow her?
And then there is also the matter of having an heir.
She has always envisioned having a child someday in the future. Her, Astrid, and whoever the Gods decided to gift them. Not that she is the religious type. But it has become an obligation instead of a dream she wishes to have come true.
So much in her life has changed, is changing, or will change in the future and it's terrifying. This isn't something she can simply turn away from when it gets hard and it's bound to get hard.
But then there is another thing
There have been other Viking chieftesses in the Barbaric Archipelago before, the Berserkers have Heather after Dagur stepped down to be with Mala. But it is a bit of a new change on Berk and that is what makes her so nervous, too, what makes her shake.
This is because their chiefdom has always been passed from father to son. Man to man. Even on those occasions that someone simply took the position by force, it was a man that took it. Just like with Hamish the Second, who had his position stolen from his family by her own grandfather.
Just thinking about it makes her feel a little bit ill. Not just because she doesn't approve of that sort of violence, but also because Hamish was a runt. Just like her.
Another insult to injury is that she isn't a man either. She's a woman. Usually unbothered by her gender, except on a few occasions, as Astrid always imbued her with pride and confidence to the best of her ability. She knows of how insecure her betrothed is. Ruffnut, too, has always been so adamant in being prideful of her womanhood.
And speaking of which, Hiccup isn't alone.
"You are trembling like leaf." Astrid is here in her home with her. She speaks up to break the silence that's been plaguing this household for the better part of an hour already. She gets up after having watched the other get ready for tonight's event in an agonizingly slow pace full of obvious second guessings.
Astrid grasps her shaking hands to still them at last.
"I-I was trying to... The cloak." Hiccup attempts to explain that she was attempting to pull on the cloak the seamstress had made just for their Chieftess to wear for today, but she finds it difficult to do so.
There is to be a celebration tonight and her cloak is made to resemble her late father's. It is so that he may be with her as she cares for the village he left her, but it is a surprisingly heavy thing to wear.
This cloak, it is a symbol of her father and her new duty. And having this responsibility thrust upon her before her time makes it hard for her to simply put it on.
For many long minutes, Hiccup's been standing at the large chair on which it hangs, the furniture that is also so connected to Stoick. He used to sit in it almost every evening with a mug of ale in one hand, Gobber sitting on another stool with his own mug. The air in the room would be jolly and both her dad and her mentor blacksmithing would share stories and victories past with her and Toothless. Sometimes the other Riders would be there as well.
Letting go of her, Astrid faces the chair and takes the cloak from the back of it. She holds it out in front of her as if to inspect it. A bit big for her, but then, Hiccup is tall. Still, she finds herself wondering if it won't drag on the ground for her, too.
"I get it." She then claims with a shrug of her shoulders, her thumbs running through the fur.
"You do?"
"Becoming Chief is such a big responsibility, Hiccup. And scary, too. And the way it happened... I know your dad had envisioned it a little differently." She says as she turns back around and Hiccup sighs.
Bundling up the thick fur in both of her arms, Astrid walks behind her to help her pull it on. Two metal claps are there to attach to her ceremonial chest piece, each with Toothless' likeness made into them.
"And I know that the how you got your new role and the meaning of it aren't all that weighs on you." She hesitantly continues. She's been wanting to bring this up, having watched Hiccup struggle with this matter for much longer than just these past few weeks.
"Oh?" Hiccup isn't much for conversation at the moment, so nervous that her words are failing her. A feat considering how talkative she usually is. Her everything is quite muted as Astrid throws both clasps over her shoulders.
"I'm not going to lie," Astrid smooths the fur on Hiccup's person.
"Most of Berk will accept you and some will give you trouble. Some of our allies will accept you and then others, both ally and hostile, will not. Just because you're you." She moves to her front again to put one clasp in place. She glances at Hiccup's troubled face before she turns her attention to the second one. Hiccup attentively watches her hands.
"It's going to be hard. Even if you were a man, this would be hard. But a woman... And after three-hundred and more years of fathers giving their seats to their sons..." She clasps the other, pulling just to make sure it's sturdy, and gazes back up at Hiccup.
Astrid knows that she believes chiefing is not for her. For years she'd tried to tell her father this, but if there wasn't something he still didn't want to hear even after their relationship had been mended, it was certainly this.
She didn't know if being Chief was right for her. She didn't know if it was right for Berk, having grown up with the seemingly unachievable standards Stoick has set before her.
Because she is a runt, because she is still so out of place even after having found her calling with dragons, because she didn't know if she could make it with the body and sex the Gods had decided to give her on the day of her birth.
In any other unknown that she has jumped into so far, there were at least some securities she could latch onto. When she decided to confront her entire village for Toothless, she could rest easy knowing that Astrid would do her best to keep him safe. When she faced the Red Death, she knew she would be saving at least her father and her village. When she trained the dragons, it was with Toothless and her friends by her side and with her father's approval. Even when diving into the Great Beyond, it was with the hope that adventure and new dragons awaited her on the other side of the fog bank that isolates them so.
But now...? What can she hold onto now?
The knowledge of Berk's long line of chieftains who were all men? The fact that she's been challenged and underestimated just for being a runt alone? Let alone for being a woman? That she might need to live up to expectations so unreasonably high that it might be easier to just give up?
Astrid watches her silently for a moment. Hiccup is an open book to her and she can see the growing despair.
"You won't be alone. You know that, right?" She asks her girlfriend, who looks back at her with an uncertain look.
"You know Toothless will stand by your side no matter what. And no way the Dragon Riders are going to let you go through this on your own. Gobber will conk anyone who dares challenge you over the head. Valka is here now. And... you have me." After attaching the cloak to her chest piece, Astrid grabs Hiccup's hands again as she finishes. The former's calloused by years of training in combat, the latter by years of blacksmithing.
A small smile appears on Hiccup's face as she finds her to be telling the truth. There are plenty of people who will support her no matter what.
"Snotlout would hit someone if they give me trouble." She says with a sure nod.
"Snotlout? Fishlegs would hit someone!" Astrid responds and Hiccup chuckles breathily.
Astrid smiles, too, and cups her cheeks.
"You are going to do amazing things, Hiccup! You've been doing amazing things for the past five years. Berk is better because of you and we'll be doing even better with you as Chief." She states with such conviction and maybe Hiccup doesn't quite see it the same way, but she appreciates her words.
"You really think so?" She asks, the hint of a more positive outlook in her tone.
"Yes, I do. You have changed so much. The reason we're here today is because of you. We went through some bad times, but we also went through a lot of good as well. And I need you to know that, no matter what comes, you'll make it as Chief." Astrid tells her, hoping Hiccup will see what she is telling him.
Hiccup takes her hands and removes them from her face to hold them in her own.
"Thank you, Astrid." Maybe she doesn't quite believe Astrid yet, but Astrid believes in her, that is all she needs right now.
"We should get going. Your people might be wondering what's taking you so long and you know how we, Hooligans, are. We can't wait to party." Astrid jokes and Hiccup lets out another laugh.
"I think Toothless is waiting outside for me, too." She says and Astrid briefly stands on her toes to press a brief peck against her forehead. Still holding one of her hands, she then pulls her towards the front door, one metal prosthetic foot thudding somewhat loudly against the wooden floor.
Hiccup's smile is more genuine as she follows her soon-to-be-wife outside. The second they leave the house, Toothless is there to greet them, purring as he sees his Rider and stands up from where he was lying.
"Hey Bud," Hiccup strokes the top of his head, a touch the dragon leans into. Astrid, meanwhile, deftly scratches him behind an ear.
He's been waiting for her to get ready for Berk to finally celebrate their new, and first, Chieftess. It took some waiting for the ice to have methodically been cleared from the village, but the day has come and Hiccup feels at least a little bit more prepared now.
The cloak tugging on her shoulders still feels heavy with burden, but with Astrid by her side, Hiccup believes she may be able to take whatever the future might throw at them.

The Talk
A/N: This idea was eating away at my brain for almost a month, but I never had time to sit down and write it… except at work. Oops.
A few things before we begin: While the premise of this is funny and awkward, this fic really isn’t meant to be. I feel like this is the conversation that needs to be had with teenage boys, more than just the regular ol’ birds and bees. We always see the super romantic fluffy fics with everyone getting off their first time and being instantly good at sex… let me tell you, not my experience. Therefore, I wanted a conversation about how the key to good sex is really about understanding your partner, rather than just making Hiccup instantly a sex god… I may do follow ups on this, but again… I can only write at work, so…. We’ll see.
I also really wanted to write from Stoick’s point of view, but not sure how well I actually captured him.
Comments & constructive criticism is always appreciated. I did write this really fast, so I apologize for any typos and mistakes.
Takes place after RTTE, before HTTYD2

As he slid off Skullcrusher with a thud, Stoick gave a deep sigh of relief. It was good to be back on home soil. As much as he appreciated the efficiency of riding dragons, he missed the days of sailing from a comfort perspective. Sitting abreast a large dragon for twelve hours at a time wore at his old joints.
Still, they’d made great time, arriving half a day earlier than expected thanks to Skullcrusher’s innate ability to find the quickest way home. Stoick chuckled as he removed his saddle from the dragon, watching the beast shake himself in relief, probably appreciating the break from a 300lb man riding him as well.
The sun was just beginning to dip beneath the western hills as the chief made his way towards his home, only to hear a familiar voice.
“Back early, Stoick?” Gobber’s voice rang out from the forge, the man’s head poking out from the service window. Stoick made his way towards the shop, ignoring his sore feet and the twinge in his back. As he walked through the low doorway, greeted by the welcome heat from the forge, he looked around for his son but came up empty. He sat heavily on a bench as Gobber handed him a tankard – he always kept a supply of mead in his shop for cold nights – and sat on Hiccup’s stool across from him, his own tankard attachment strapped to his arm. “How’d the talks go?”
Stoick took a long draw from his drink, sighing happily, before answering. “Good, Beserkers are willing to stick to the terms we agreed to last year, Alvin’s looking for a little more investment to help rebuild Outcast Island’s guard, but we were able to come to agreeable terms overall. There’s been less dragon hunter activity overall, but they’re keeping steady eyes on the west, just in case that Krogan creep reappears.”
“I’m surprised you didn’t take Hiccup with you, considering he helped form all those alliances in the first place.” Gobber replied, reaching down to fiddle with his peg-leg.
“The boy’s been flying all over trying to save the archipelago for going on three years, I figured he could use some time at home. He won’t have many years left where he can just be a boy, you know?” He surveyed his son’s workbench, neatly organized tools contrasting the scattered pile of papers no doubt filled with sketches of saddles and dragons. “Where is he, anyways?”
“He was in early this morning so I let him out about half-an hour ago. Astrid met him, I believe they were going to go for a flight before dinner.”
Stoick nodded, and the two continued their small talk for a few minutes before the chief grabbed his travel bag and bid his farewell.
As he approached his home, he noticed Toothless asleep on the roof, his tail gently swaying back and forth absently. Stoick was slightly surprised Hiccup would be back so soon – it was a beautiful night for a flight after all, and they wouldn’t have many good weather days left – but was too tired to think much of it as he reached for the door.
“Astrid.” He heard as the door opened quietly (Hiccup had fixed the creaky hinge months ago), a soft moan that sounded distinctly unlike his son’s normally pitchy voice.
To his shock (and mild horror), his eyes snapped to the source of the sound finding Astrid straddling Hiccup, who was laying on the floor by the fire, the two of them closely entwined (though thankfully clothed), with Astrid’s lips fastened tightly to the underside of his son’s jaw. Hiccup’s eyes were closed, his hands in her hair and gripping her upper thigh, just under her skirt, as Astrid chuckled softly against his throat.
It said something about how… involved… they were, that neither teen had noticed his approach – he wasn’t exactly subtle when he walked.
Stoick dropped his bag.
The two teens froze, whipping their heads towards the door and jumping apart, Hiccup scrambling for a nearby blanket and covering what was obviously a very uncomfortable situation in his trousers. Astrid darted a good five feet back from him, resting her back against a chair and looking at Stoick in horror, while Hiccup clamped his eyes closed as though he could block the whole situation out.
Feeling no more comfortable than they, Stoick cleared his throat. “Honey, I’m home.” He said, hoping to break the tension that had settled in the room like ice.
It wasn’t like he was entirely surprised. The two had become a couple over the last year or so, and their romance had been building for far longer than that. He’d seen them kiss a number of times, soft pecks on the cheeks to once, while looking for Gobber, spotting them tucked in the corner of the forge, wrapped so tightly around each other that he’d need two dragons to pull them apart if he’d wanted to. He wasn’t upset by it. They were clearly in love, and their relationship was solid and respectful.
He remembered being in that kind of swirling love, chasing Val into dark rooms, drawn by her scent and her coy smiles. They’d done far more than he’d just encountered. And, if he were honest with himself, he was pleased, pleased that after everything, Hiccup had found someone that made him happy the way Val had for him.
Still…
That embrace that he’d just interrupted, that had been going somewhere. Their flushed cheeks and shaking hands signaled that maybe this had been more than just a typical necking session.
They’d planned to have the whole night alone…
He hadn’t prepared for this. He hadn’t prepared Hiccup for this.
“Astrid,” he said softly. “Why don’t you head on home.” Astrid’s eyes darted to his, then to Hiccup, then back to her hands in her lap.
“Chief, sir… we weren’t… it was my idea…” Astrid stammered, sounding entirely unlike herself as Hiccup shifted awkwardly, moving towards his prosthetic, which Stoick just noticed he wasn’t wearing.
Stoick cut her off. “It’s alright, lass, you’ll get him back. I just want to speak with him.” She still didn’t move immediately, wringing her hands. “And I won’t say a word to your parents either.” He finished. Her shoulders relaxed slightly.
He grabbed his rucksack off the floor from where he’d dropped it and moved into his bedroom to give them a moment of privacy. Their soft whispers drifted into the room as he began to sort through his bag.
“I can stay, really.”
“No, go. It’ll only be more awkward.”
A short pause, followed by the soft sound of the press of lips together.
“I’ll see you later, okay?” Astrid sounded guilty as she said it, but as Stoick rounded the corner into the room again, she was helping Hiccup to his feet and pulling him into a hug. Almost defiantly, she pressed her lips to his one last time before gathering her things and heading to the door.
Before she could close it behind her, they heard her mutter to Toothless: “What kind of guard-dragon are you, anyways…” before stomping off.
Hiccup was sitting facing the fire when Stoick turned back to him, his thin shoulders set in a tight line, head hung. Stoick sighed exasperatedly.
“Oh honestly, boy, I’m not going to beat you.” He said, patting Hiccup’s shoulder as he walked behind him. He then walked to their small kitchen and grabbed two tankards, filling them with mead from the small barrel he kept on hand. He handed one to Hiccup as he sat in the chair nearest to him. Hiccup took it, still avoiding his gaze. The lad wasn’t much of a drinker, but they’d both need it to get through this conversation. “It’s not like I haven’t been in your shoes.” Stoick continued, “I was once your age and in love, I can’t blame you for acting on it.”
Hiccup raised his head for the first time, worrying his lip. “I… we… haven’t exactly…”
Stoick leaned forward, meeting those bright green eyes. “You haven’t done the deed?” Hiccup swallowed heavily, then shook his head. Relief coursed through Stoick. “Well, at least I’m not too late then. Go on, drink. You’ll be wanting it.” He paused, drinking from his own tankard for a moment. “How much have you done?” He asked, almost afraid of the answer.
Hiccup sputtered in his drink, coughing as it attempted to go down his airway. “Oh come now, son, if you’re not mature enough to talk about this, you’re certainly not mature enough to do it.”
Hiccup looked like he’d rather be eaten by a dragon than have this conversation, clearly forcing himself to speak as he said, “Nothing… below the waist…. I guess.” He said haltingly.
Stoick nodded, ignoring the squirming feeling in his stomach. It was weird to think of his little boy in this context, but he had to admit that Hiccup hardly looked like a little boy anymore. While still thin and wiry, his muscles had become more defined and he’d filled out significantly. It wasn’t as hard to think of him as a man. A man with urges. Stoick tried not to dwell on it too long.
“Dad, you don’t… I know how the…” Hiccup coughed, looking to the ceiling, like he was hoping it would come crashing down on his head. “…mechanics work.”
“Oh, I have no doubt of that. You can hardly get to your age and not hear the stories. Hel, you probably heard them before you knew what you were hearing.” He took a long drink from his tankard. “That’s not what I’m worried about, son. I trust you to be safe and do right by her if she were to come with child.”
Hiccup met his eyes, steeling himself before saying quietly, “She’s been taking the herbs1 for a while now, just in case.” He paused before adding. “Since before we were really together. She was worried what might happen if she were captured by Viggo’s men and they… well…” He swallowed thickly, squeezing his eyes tightly shut to block out the horror of that thought. He then took several long swallows of mead.
Stoick’s stomach dropped, both admiring Astrid’s intelligence and horrified that she had felt that might be necessary. “Smart girl.” Was all he said, taking another long drink himself.
His tankard was already nearly empty, and Hiccup wasn’t too far behind. He stood, taking the mug from his son and refilling them before returning to his chair. “Look son, I’m not here to scold you, I’m not even here to tell you not to do it.” He said, reaching forward to hand him his mug, allowing his hand to rest on his shoulder for a moment. “You’ve grown in to a fine young man, you’ll be nineteen in a few short months, you’ve got a solid, healthy relationship with a smart, strong woman. You could do a lot worse.” He chuckled, and Hiccup smiled weakly at him, shrugging his shoulders.
“I’m not telling you not to do it,” Stoick continued, leaning back in his chair, “and I’m not going to give you the typical speech most fathers tell their sons.” Hiccup paused with his tankard halfway to his lips.
“What do you mean?” He responded, confusion lacing his voice. “What…” he trailed off.
Stoick stayed silent for a minute, organizing his thoughts in his head, remembering his first night with Valka. How she’d cried, how horrified and ashamed he’d been to have hurt her, how she’d been so torn up in thinking she wouldn’t make a good wife because she couldn’t enjoy it, how it had taken them a long time to find ways to make her enjoy it the way he did. And some men never tried to learn. Hiccup may not have Stoick’s bone structure or bulk, but without the proper care…
Hiccup would not be one of those brutes.
“Son…” he started, his voice softer, and Hiccup’s eyes showed surprise at the change in tone. “Those men, the men that sing bawdy tales of conquering women and ‘taking what’s theirs’…those men are not real men. Any man that has to tell others what a man he is in bed, is no man you’d want to imitate.”
Hiccup nodded, opening his mouth to speak but Stoick stopped him. “You know that I have no tolerance for rapists on my island, it’s the quickest way to get sent to Outcast Island for sure. But what most men don’t understand is that even in their own marriages, everything should be equal. If the woman isn’t interested, or isn’t enjoying it and the man insists, that’s the same as rape in my mind. It’s just much harder to enforce.”
“I’d never…You know I’d never” Hiccup swallowed, moving to put his mug down before changing his mind and taking another drink. He waited for his father to continue, obviously lost for what to say.
“Look, son… here’s the simplest way to put it.” Stoick said, forcing himself to meet his son’s eyes, which were big and concerned. “Sex, it’s a powerful thing. It’s one of the best feelings in the world for a man, especially when you’re with someone you love. Once you start, you’re not going to want to stop.
“But for a woman… it’s different. Yes, if you take the time and learn her body, if you really take the time to care, it’s the same for them, you’ll have a wonderful relationship and many happy encounters.” Stoick cleared his throat, forcing himself not to think too hard about the fact that this was his son he was speaking to, trying not to picture anything beyond what he had to.
“But if you force it, if you rush into it and hurt her, you’ll hate yourself for it for the rest of your life. They’re more complicated in their pleasure than we are, son. They can be hurt easily and might not say a thing about it because they don’t know they shouldn’t have to.”
He drained the last of his mug, setting it down on the table in front of him. Hiccup followed suit, staring at it intensely, though his cheeks were red from the alcohol and conversation topic.
“I’d never hurt her.” The young man said finally, “You know I wouldn’t. I couldn’t. I love her too much.” He met his father’s eye for a moment. “Anyways, she’d probably clobber me if I did, even by accident.”
“You’d be surprised.” Stoick replied. “Many women think it’s their burden to bear, that they have to go through that just to bear children. Others know different, but many think that sex is not for them to enjoy, just to service their husbands.” He shrugged. “We generally try to dissuade that thinking here, but it’s an old way that’s carried through many generations. Astrid’s a warrior, she might just bite through the pain and not admit to it.”
Hiccup looked dismayed, standing up and beginning to pace. “Then how do I know?” The alcohol had obviously loosened his tongue a bit, allowing him to speak more freely without as much embarrassment. “How do I make sure she never feels pain?”
On one of his passes, Stoick grabbed his elbow, his arm dwarfed in the chief’s enormous hand, and pulled him back to his chair.
“You communicate with her. You talk to her, find out what she likes, what she doesn’t… you go slow and take your time and learn her. I can’t tell you what Astrid would like anymore than I could tell you what Gobber would like…” He paused, scowling. “Eh, scratch that, I know too much about that…. The point is, everyone is different, so as long you take your time and are patient and caring, you’ll be fine. The first time will always be a bit painful, just since it’s new, but be gentle and take your time, and you’ll be just fine, son.”
Stoick stood up and walked the short distance to Hiccup, putting his hands on those small shoulders and crouching to meet his eyes. “Hiccup, I know you. You’re the kindest person I know, I don’t doubt you’ll be good to her. I just want you to have the best relationship you can with Astrid, and not make some of the mistakes I did when I was young.” Hiccup looked at his father questioningly. “I made up for it, in the end, but still. I’d rather you not have to.”
Hiccup nodded, draining the rest of his tankard before taking a deep breath. “Thank you, Dad.” He said quietly, “I… I appreciate that you care enough to tell me this. And…sorry, you had to come home to that.”
Stoick laughed. “It’s alright, laddie, like I said, I’ve been there in the past. Now, it doesn’t look like you were planning on cooking dinner tonight, what do you say we head down to the hall?”
It took them a minute to gather their things and make their way out the door. Stoick noted with amusement that Hiccup’s feet were a bit unsteady from the mead, his cheeks flushed and his eyes a little hazy. The boy had come a long way from the talking fishbone he’d been, but he still lacked a Viking’s ability to hold his drink.
As they entered the hall, Hiccup walked beside him as the villagers welcomed Stoick home, accepting pats on the back from the people who had deemed him the ‘Pride of Berk” – a name that still made Hiccup blush fervently.
After filling their plates, they sat down with their respective friends, Hiccup flanked by Tuffnut, who handed him a mug of wine, and Fishlegs. Stoick watched in amusement as his son tried to pretend he hadn’t just had an extremely awkward encounter, drinking from his mug perhaps a bit more heavily than he should.
After a moment, Astrid appeared from the crowd, looking over to Stoick tentatively before walking over to her betrothed with a confidence that the chief was sure was for his benefit. Fishlegs easily made room for her and she sat beside Hiccup, leaning in close and resting her forehead against his own. After a moment, Hiccup dipped his head into the corner of her neck, pulling her tightly to him and whispering something. The other riders carried on obliviously, Tuff and Snotlout arguing back and forth about something nonsensible and Fishlegs making eyes at Ruff across the table.
The two lovers held each other in their own bubble for a few moments longer, soft words exchanged between the two of them, before separating. Hiccup started to eat and Astrid pressed a kiss to his hairline before standing. She made her way to the casks of water and poured two tankards for them, before looking reluctantly towards Stoick, catching his eye. Clearly fighting with herself, she finally gathered the courage to walk his way, stopping by the enormous man with an odd look on her face.
Stoick waited for her to speak, the adults around him engrossed in conversation with hardly a care for the girl’s presence. She leaned in to him.
“Look… I don’t know what you said to him…” She started awkwardly, her voice barely above a whisper. “All he said is that you weren’t mad, and that he never wanted to hurt me, never wanted to disappoint me.” Stoick smiled softly, encouragingly. “I just…” She continued, taking a deep breath. “Thank you… for understanding. And for not being mad.” She paused. “I really do love him, you know.” She said, nodding at him before turning on her heel and returning to Hiccup’s side.
Stoick smiled, watching the girl – no, the woman – move back across the room, sitting beside his son and pressing another kiss to his cheek.
They’d be just fine.
1 I know that herbs probably aren’t adequate birth control…. But come on, we’re in a universe with dragons. I’m calling that sufficient if I want to.

An Outing
Summary: Hiccup takes the youngest of his children out to go exploring and spend some quality time together.
His back was sore and each muscle in his arms and legs were twitching, even his prosthetic ached. The sound that left his mouth was like a dragon's groan as he stretched out the tight ligaments in his back. When done he smiled as he reached for the handle of the front door and then entered. He was greeted with a beautiful sight of his wife sharpening some of the kitchen cutlery and being a mother of three she picked up on a habit of humming softly when doing a meaningless task. It was music to his aging ears and his smile grew when speaking to her.
"Good afternoon Milady." He went up to her and kissed her cheek that she offered. She greeted him in return. He grabbed his mug and filled it with his tea before taking a seat in his chair. He rubbed a stiff shoulder as she struck up a conversation.
"So are you home for the rest of the day?"
He nodded. "Yeah, we managed to fix one of the docking stations. Who knew they were so labor intensive to fix?"
That made her chuckle, "Well, you did design them that way." She moved on to her next step which was preparing the food. Luckily, the years of being a mom made her a better cook. Unlike her husband, her children didn't lie when they didn't like her something she cooked.
"Yeah," he forced a smile, "why was that again?" He saw her shrug and then focus back on the task of cooking. He relaxed in the chair more and took sips of his drink. He was about to enjoy the peace of his home and the sound of the knife hitting the cutting board as his wife hummed when a happy shriek reached both parents.
"Daddy!"
The smile bursting through his dark beard was a clear as day as he looked at his seven-year-old son. His arms were wide open as the boy crashed into him and immediately he was plopped into his lap. After the bear hug, he received he struck a conversation with the youngster. Ruffling his red hair a bit before his hand was pushed away he asked, "And what did Little Stoick have on his plate today?"
He listened to his son's squeaky voice ramble off every detail and activity that he did. Somewhere the boy's mother was involved. A couple was about their cat. A gift they received from one of their new traders when they were expecting Stoick and with no more dragons it did keep the rats at bay. The last one was the most entertaining as he listened and watched his youngest tell and act out how close he was to beat his older sister in combat. He laughed at the ending. He gut laughed so hard that it made Little Stoick proud he could entertain his father. When he calmed down and wiped away a tear he asked, "And where is Zephyr?"
The seven-year-old rolled his eyes and looked like he swallowed a mouthful of his mother's Yaknog. "She's with Tyr."
"Really?" the father was taken back by that. He looked at his wife to confirm and again she shrugged.
"Seems he finally was able to catch her eye this time."
He did not like the sound of that. His little girl with a boy at their age. He knew what boys thought of at their age. He was one once, wishing for just one small peck from the girl they crushed on. His green eyes scanned over towards his wife as he thought back to the memories of when they were so young. How he was able to get that same kiss from her and a couple punches too. He smiled at the blonde and unknowingly rubbed his forearm. Those were some memories he wouldn't trade for the world. He felt his son pull on his cloak bringing him back to the present. He ruffled his red hair again earning a pout and a soft shove. "What about Nuffink?"
"With Grandpa Gobber. He started his apronship."
"Apprenticeship sweetie," the mother corrected.
"That's what I said- apronship."
The mother chuckled, "Close enough, but yea that's where your other son is dear."
"Damn," he cursed in disbelief, "that was today?"
"Hiccup, language," she scolded him.
"Sorry," he cringed and turned to his son, "don't you repeat that." He pointed a finger at the boy only succeeding in making him laugh. Hiccup sighed though upset with himself. "I just wanted to wish him good luck is all. Gobber isn't the easiest Viking to please when it comes to working in the shop."
The mother turned to her boys and leaned against the table she was working on. "You have. Ever since you were able to get him that spot."
He nodded and placed the seven-year-old off his lap. His leg was starting to feel like pins and needles with him sitting and squirming about. That and he was trying to digest the information he was hearing about his family. "I know Astrid, but he didn't seem enthusiastic by it was I would have hoped."
"That's because he's still just a boy," she reassured.
He agreed half heartily, "I just want him to have a place. To be a part of something a little bit bigger. To feel useful in the tribe."
Astrid walked over to him and rubbed his aching neck. "He has a place Hiccup." He was going to speak, but she cut him off. "He might be quiet, but he's fierce. Nuffink will find his place in the tribe. Just like you did. Just like we all did."
He held her hands in his own stopping her work on his neck. That's when he felt her kiss the top of his head and smile. "Why are you always right?"
"Because I always am," she teased.
The two enjoyed the moment with each other both saying how much they loved one another without uttering a word. The time was cut short when Stoick once again pulled on Hiccup's cloak.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, Little Stoick?" the corners of his lips turned upward when addressing the lad. He felt Astrid leave his side and heard the shopping begin on her cooking.
"Are you staying for lunch?" He looked up at his father with the biggest puppy dog blue eyes he had overseen from his three kids.
The older Haddock nodded and beaming down at his son whose grin seemed to grow larger. Even more when he explained that he will be staying for the rest of the day. What caught the father off guard however was when his seven-year-old asked if they could go somewhere. "And where would you like to go? The plaza perhaps? Maybe even see Grandma? She can tell you a really great story or two." The redhead shook his head perplexing Hiccup. There wasn't much that the young lad could do. "Then where would you like to go?"
"Exploring!"
Every bone in his body turned to stone as fear slowly sank in. he didn't think his aching body could fulfill his son's wish. Luckily, his wife stepped in to help him out.
Astrid called out, "Sweetie, I don't think your dad is quite up for that. He has had a rough day at the shipyard. Maybe you two can do something less rigorous?"
His smile disappeared as quickly as a Night Fury in a moonless night. The pout and sad eye were quick to return. "But last week he promised to take me and it rained." Little Stoick turned to his dad at this point, his big blue eyes begging him. "Please, Dad. I promise we don't have to go far or for long. Just please can we go?"
Hiccup sighed and turned to Astrid.
"It's your decision," she said.
He turned back to him and really thought about it all while his son was mumming his pleases. He sighed once more running his hand over his beard before giving his answer, "Go grab your supplies then."
His face lit up, "Really?!"
"Really." He grinned, "Now go before I changed my mind." With that, he watched his youngster scramble up the stairs to prepare his things. He went to stand up and regretted it. Everything was stiff and screaming in pain. He put his hands on his hips and tried to regain his composure as he took a deep breath, "Oh Gods."
Astrid placed a hand on his shoulder. Her blue eyes looking at him with concern. "Are you sure you're up for this? You know he will understand if you do it another day."
He gave a soft smile towards her and took her hand to lightly kiss her knuckles. "Eh, what's one more adventure for these old bones?"
She chuckled, "But you're not that old."
He was about to counter when a small voice interrupted them.
"I'm ready!"
Both parents gave each other a look of pure happiness and some disbelief as they watched the small Haddock lug a large sack down the stairs one step at a time.
"That may kill me though," he whispered in her ear playfully.
"I got it." The mother walked over to her son and asked, "And what do you have in all that?"
"Everything you need to go exploring," he said matter of factly.
She raised her eyebrows stunned by his confidence, but she quickly recovered. "You know your mother has been on exploration or two and do you want to know something?" When he bobbed his head she continued, "You don't need all this to go on an adventure."
"B-but," he was so confused at this point, "Uncle Snotlout says you do! Especially when you could run into a bear as he did!"
It all clicked into place for the parents and Hiccup spoke up.
"Son, you do know your Uncle like to fabricate things, right?"
He cocked his head, "What's fab-br-ate-tated mean?"
Astrid snorted lightly at her son's pronunciation of the word and she brushed a lock of his red hair back away from his freckled face. "It means he likes to make things up. There are no bears on our island." She then proceeds to dig through the bad to pull two things out. "All you really need is this." She held up a water pouch and adjusted the strap so it could sling over his shoulder correctly. "And this." The second item was a small dagger no larger than a butter knife and clipped it to his belt on the other side. "Everything else will just slow you down." She stood up satisfied with her work. "Especially, if you run into a bear." She winked at him and enjoyed the smile that bloomed over his young face. "Now go back upstairs and grab your coat. I don't need you getting sick."
Stoick nodded and bounded up the stairs.
Hiccup went to his wife and kissed her cheek and said a quiet, "Thank you."
She chuckled.
"We should be back in a couple of hours. Anything you need when we come back?"
"Just bring back our other children. Dinner should be ready by then."
"Okay," he said and gave her another small quick peck on her lips this time. He then called the stairs to the boy. "Let's go, Stoick. We're burning daylight!"
He ran back down at that hopping over his bag and rushing towards the door. "Come on! Let's go!" He waved his dad over at the door.
Hiccup shook his head chuckling again. Before he opened it however he stopped, "Aren't you forgetting something?"
The lad thought about it until it dawned on him, "Bye mom! I love you!"
"Love you both," she said grinning and watching them walk out the door.
"Love you," Hiccup replied, "We'll be back before sundown at the latest."
"Just don't push yourself."
The door closed as soon as they walked out.
The stroll through the woods was tough on his aching body, but seeing his seven-year-old jump and bounce on stones and tree roots describing how he will map every inch of these woods to find himself a bear was becoming another he never wanted to forget. Though it made him curious. "Hey Little Stoick, where did all this interest in catching a bear come from?"
The son stopped his play and looked down at his feet. He was scared and it was clear on his face. The answer he gave was something Hiccup wasn't expecting. "You have to hunt one to be a Viking, don't you? Hunting is everything around here."
He closed his green eyes and scrunched his face almost in anger. Not at his son, but at himself. He found a spot to take a seat and called the son over to him. When the boy was seated beside him, he took a moment before speaking. His voice was very calm and yet stern. "Tell me the truth, Stoick. Do you believe the words you just told me?"
The boy was even more scared that he had done something wrong that he was becoming unsure. "Y-yes?" Looking at his father's reaction he saw nothing to confirm how he was feeling. Hiccup sat there staring straight ahead being very stoic made him waver. "Maybe? I don't know. Please don't be mad."
Hiccup heard the shakiness in his voice and knew the truth about what his son really thought and wanted. He finally looked at him giving him a gentle smile. He placed a hand on his slim shoulder and said, "Stoick don't you ever think I am mad at you. I will never be mad or angry at how you feel or what you think as long as it is you that are making those choices. But I do need to know the truth. Whoever told you, you need to kill something to be a Viking, to be part of our tribe or our family, they're wrong. It is who you are as a person that makes you a true Viking and no matter what if you are true to yourself your mother and I will be proud of you. Do you understand?"
Little Stoick sat there contemplating every word his father had said and in truth, he was boggled by it. "I'm not sure."
"Yeah," Hiccup started, "I wasn't sure at your age either, but you will eventually. There is one thing you do need to know though."
"What's that?"
"That I love you." He pulled his boy into one of his tightest hugs he could give and was swelled with pride when it was returned and he heard a soft whisper in his ear.
"I love you too Daddy."
When he pulled away he looked his son in his eyes. "Now do you really want to hunt a bear today?"
His head shook shaking the mop of red hair everywhere.
"Then what would you like to do? Go back home maybe?" Seeing the hurt and the 'how dare you to suggest that' look on his young son's face made Hiccup's hope of sitting in his chair slashed. "Okay, then what?"
Stoick sat there pondering until the idea struck him. "Zephyr said there was a huge field here and it has mom's favorite flowers. Can we go pick some for her?"
Hiccup grinned and nodded. It was a better idea than roaming the woods aimlessly. He was about to lead the way to the spot when his boy spoke up again.
"But I want to find it! Because that's what real explorers do!"
He chuckled, "Very well." He then let the lad happily run ahead of a few paces away leading the father on a very long detour route to their destination. "At least it's better than trying to find a bear."
The exploration was taking a lot longer than expected and Hiccup's legs and back were throbbing. Yet again he bore through it for it was worth it to see how happy this time with his youngest was making him. And believe it or not, Hiccup was having fun too. When answering his son's rapid-fire questions about the woods and the creature that they came across. He even explained how to keep track of where you were going so you wouldn't be going in circles or head in the opposite direction. It made him proud to be the boy's father.
Little Stoick soaked it all in like a sponge. He didn't even notice that his dad was nudging him in the correct direction.
Another few more moments and the duo finally made it to the field that was full of small, but beautiful wildflowers. There were large rock faces and boulders scattered around all nestled within a canopy of pine trees that allowed soft beams of sunlight to shine through. It was a very peaceful place one that Hiccup loved to take Astrid to when and if they ever had time for themselves. Though right now it was Little Stoick's playground as he ran through the field climbing and jumping off the rocks and scattering all the insects that were resting. Hiccup took the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the scene of his son being excited that he found the place all on his own and earning the title of an explorer.
The father watched his son enjoy the field but paid closer attention when the young boy demanded it.
"Dad! Dad! Look at me! Not only can I find places for you but look at how great am I at climbing!" He was halfway up one of the boulders before he jumped off to show his abilities to the older Haddock.
Hiccup was beaming, but did call out, "Just be careful!" Then he mumbled to himself, "Odin knows what your mother will do to me if anything happened to you." But as he watched his youngest climb on a different larger rock he titled his head a little and squinted. He didn't remember a stone that large in the middle of this field. His green eyes kept studying it very complex on why it felt so off of it being there. His son jumped off it several more times, but again Hiccup was more concern with the riddle that the object created. When Stoick let out a loud squeal as he jumped off it again Hiccup swore he saw the stone twitch. He wanted to shake the feeling away, but he couldn't. He stood up and began walking towards it as Stoick continue to play.
When the Chief was a few paces away the son jumped off the large figure again only landing by doing a small roll. He got up and brushed off the dirt proud he was able to make it from that height. He was determined to do it again to prove it wasn't a fluke.
As the boy was ready to walk back to climb again Hiccup didn't notice a twitch this time. It was a shift and then a low tremble from the ground. Then fear struck through the heart of the father as a rumble of a growl emerged from the thing. Hiccup would have had a multitude of questions if his terrified green eyes didn't focus on his son rushing towards it once again. "Stoick," he said in a petrified whisper.
At that moment the silhouette of a large adolescent dragon slowly started to rise, while Stoick kept looking at it very confused and terrified.
"Stoick!" Hiccup shrieked in panic as he rushed with all his might to reach his boy to get him out of there. He crashed into the young lad holding him tightly to his chest as the dragon turned and swung his tail in time to hit the two. It sent them flying through the air as Hiccup curled around his son until his back slammed into the side of one of the actual stones in the field. When the older Haddock hit the stone's edge the area received the sound of a loud crack and Hiccup's agonizing gasp before they fell to its base.
Little Stoick was under his father trying to regain all his sense and what had happened. He felt the crushing weight of his father's body and the cloak that covered them. He was about to move but saw that the creature was over them. The small boy held his breath and froze when he felt the warm air of the dragon washing over them as it sniffed. He saw the large glowing eyes of it and he whimpered as he prayed that it would go away.
As soon as the dragon arrived it left hoping to find a new spot to rest where it wouldn't be disturbed.
Little Stoick waited until the ground stopped shaking to move. When he did he had to wiggle to get out from under his father. He was out of breath, but he called out to the man, "Dad, I think it left." He waited and then asked, "What was that thing?" When he didn't get a response he looked at his father's pale emotionless face. "Dad?" He touched his arm and shook it lightly calling out to him again, "Daddy?" He shook him a little harder, but Hiccup laid there like a rag doll. "Dad please wake up. Please." His little hands kept trying to jostle the man. "I'm ready to go home now. I want to go, home Dad, please…" He stopped trying to wake up his father and took a second to look around the peaceful field that was losing daylight. His blue eyes were slowly filling to the brim with tears as he whimpered out, "I can't remember how to without you."
Astrid was drumming her fingers on the table every now and then looking towards the door. It wasn't completely sundown, but with her other two children home and not her husband or youngest she was becoming worried. Then her guy was screaming at her that something wasn't right. After about five more minutes of her nervous nagging stomach, she called for her only daughter.
"Yes mom?" the teenager asked.
"Hold down the fort while I'm gone," the older blonde ordered as she went to grab her cloak and other supplies before venturing out.
Zephyr was confused, "Where are you going?"
"And why is she in charge?!" whined Nuffink.
Astrid gave them all a stern look making them regret questioning her. "Because she's the oldest and I'm going to find the rest of our family. They should have been back by now."
The children nodded not wanting to agitate their mother more.
She stopped at several other places checking just in case they decided to hang out there before heading home. When she came up empty-handed was when she grabbed their friends to form a small search party. She even gave Snotlout a speech on how he will not be telling her children any more tall tales again.
The sun was inches away from completely setting and Astrid was more worried now than ever, especially since they started to light the torches. It was times like this that she wish she had Stormfly back, her missing family would have been found by now. They kept searching though calling out both boy's names even when they were beginning to see the moon slowly rising through the trees.
"It's getting pretty late," Fishlegs said.
"It's not that late," she snapped.
"Maybe they are already went home," Tuffnut suggested.
"No," she snapped again. She couldn't explain it, but she knew they weren't. Her friends were right however it was getting darker and soon they won't be able to see anything. "Just one more hour please. Then we can go."
Eret seeing the poor mother's distress touch her shoulder and gave a comforting smile, "One more hour. Now come on blokes yell louder so they can hear us. We don't have much time left."
Little Stoick was cold even as he laid in his father's arms. His dad still hadn't woken up yet and the boy kept sniffling. Every so often he began to cry because he didn't understand what was wrong with his father and he just wanted to go home. He laid there and wiped away some more tears that were falling. as soon as he did that and looked up he became scared. In the treeline, he saw the orange glow and all he could think was that the monster was back. That is until he heard his name. Then he heard it again and recognized the voice. He called out in a hoarse tone, "Mommy?"
He sat up and cleaned his snotty face with his sleeve and hearing his name again he began to race towards the light. He tripped only once, but bounced right back up and continued to run all while crying out to her, "Mommy! I'm here! I'm over here Momma!"
"Stoick?" She turned to see if she heard correctly and when she did she bolted. The other followed.
Astrid crushed her baby boy in a hug thanking every God that she had him in her arms again. When she could she pulled away and inspected him. She only noticed that he was dirty with maybe one or two scrapes. That and his blue eyes were a little red and puffy from his crying. However, something was missing and it frightened the mother, "Where's your father?"
He sniffled, wiped his nose on his sleeve again as he tried to hold back his tears.
"Stoick?"
"Daddy won't wake up."
Her heart dropped and her breathing became ragged as she realized what her son has said. "No…" She stared out to where she saw her friends standing. Her body felt like lead as she moved to get up and go near them. What her son said couldn't be true. The only reason why she stopped was that the twins held her back. With the glow of the torches, she was able to see Hiccup lying motionless against the boulder. His skin was white even with the fire's light upon it and as she watched Eret move in to check for a pulse she felt her bottom lip begin to quiver.
He looked at her and shook her head slowly before looking away trying not to cry himself.
They all tried not too but the tears were falling freely.
She easily pushed the twins away and fell upon her husband's lifeless body crying in agony. Everyone there gave Astrid her space as she mourned. She didn't want to beg, but she didn't want to believe this either. She moved so his head was in her lap as she cried and let her heavy tears fall on his face.
"Mom?" Stoick called quietly.
That was when everyone realized the seven-year-old was still there and no one knew what to do. The only one who stepped up to handle him while Astrid grieved was Snotlout.
He led the lad away and turn to sit them both so they weren't looking at his parents. This only confused the kid more as all he wanted to do was cheer his mother up and go home with his dad.
"Look kid your mom just needs some time with your dad."
"But he's going to wake up," he said, "They'll have time at home."
Snotlout became upset. He was not good at this sort of thing and Astrid threatened him that he was not allowed to tell tales to her children again. He growled while grinding his teeth until both their blue eyes locked on each other and he made a decision. "Okay, you know what I'm going to be straight with you. Your dad's not waking up. He's never going to wake up." He looked down at Stoick to see if he was understanding but instead, he noticed that his expression wasn't one that was about to burst into tears. That made the older male sight and soften his tone, "but you already knew that didn't you?"
The small lad nodded as tears softly rolled off his cheeks.
Snotlout pulled the kid into his lap and held him as the youngest Haddock was finally able to cry freely and get the comfort he so desperately needed. All the time Snotlout rubbed the kid's back telling him in his own way that things were going to be okay and that Hiccup was with his Grandfather in Valhalla.
Then Little Stoick said something that baffled the man, "Why did the monster have to come?"
"What monster?"
The man would never receive an answer for the stress and reality of the world of losing his dad finally caught up to Stoick and knocked him unconscious. He carefully got up not to disturb his slumber and then easily passed the kid off to Fishlegs. He walked over to Astrid, ignoring Eret telling him to stop, and pulled her out of her mourning, "Um, hey Astrid."
"What Snotlout," she said not taking her eyes away from Hiccup.
He took a knee beside her and placed a hand on her shoulder before speaking, "I think you need to take care of Little Stoick right now. He needs to go home." He made his point when showing her Fishlegs carrying her sleeping son. "The rest of us will bring Hiccup back."
Astrid looked back at her deceased husband and tried not to cry again as she kissed his forehead once more. She carefully placed his head back on the soft grass and Snotlout helped her to stand. Her blue eyes looked at Hiccup one more time and then she asked, "How could this have happened?"
"He says a monster did it." She was going to ask what that meant, but he continued, "Ask him tomorrow. Right now you need to be with your kids."
She nodded and went to retrieve her son from the large Viking, but even he stopped her.
"I got him. I'll walk both of you back."
"Thank you Fishlegs."
They came back and the first thing Astrid notice was her other children waiting for her. She brushed a tear away before they saw and asked, "What are you two still doing up?"
Zephyr answered, "We're waiting for you."
They both noticed their Uncle Fishlegs heading up the stairs carrying their little brother. It made Nuffink ask, "Where's Dad?"
Astrid's breath hitched and she tried very hard not to let the tears fall. She was a strong person. She always has been, but she didn't know how or if she could break it to them. Luckily, her daughter was always the one to figure things out quickly.
"Something happened didn't it?"
Her eyes were tightly closed as she tried not to cry. She moved over to sit on her living room floor and ushered her other two kids to come to her. She held them close, one in each arm, as she tried to explain what happened. "There was an accident and…" she trailed off as she began to cry again. This caused the other two to have tears brim in their own eyes.
"Mom?" Nuffink called.
"He didn't make it." Astrid started to sob and she kept sobbing, "He didn't make it."
When Astrid tried to hold onto her oldest Zephyr pushed her away. "You're lying."
The mother was completely taken back by her daughter's anger. And as she tried to tell her otherwise the young girl refused to believe.
"No! You are lying. There's been plenty of accident where Dad's been involved in and he has always made it. Always! You have to be lying."
"Sweetie," Astrid went to reach for her to comfort her, but shew as pushed away again and this time her daughter ran out the front door. "Zephyr!" she wanted to run after her, but Nuffink was clinging to her and now grieving at the loss of his father. He was just as confused as all of them were. This was now the first time where Astrid was torn at what to do.
The young Haddock girl refused to believe her mother as she ran through the village. Her father, the man who could train dragons and ride them like horses, couldn't be gone because of a stupid accident in their mediocre village. It couldn't happen. It was impossible. Not after all the stories that were told about him. Her mother just had to be a liar and her father was just out and about still being a Chief. It wouldn't be the first time he pulled an all-nighter. Maybe that's why she was running through the maze of roads trying to find him. To make her mother wrong for once in her life. But the part of her knew it was true because tears kept threatening to spill as she ran. She skidded to a halt though when running into the four other people in her family.
Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Snotlout, and Eret was carrying a makeshift stretcher with her father's cloak covering something. In a trance-like state, she walked up to them ignoring their warnings. Before anyone could stop the young teen she reached for the cloak and pulled it away. She gasped in horror, covering her mouth as she started to hyperventilate and cry. Her mother was right. Zephyr saw her father laying there dead, his skin now whiter than snow. The only comfort she had was that it looked like her father was sleeping.
Eret was the one who covered Hiccup back up and then decided he would walk the lass back to her mother, while the others were to take Hiccup to the elders to prep him for his funeral by the end of tomorrow.
On the walk back Zephyr was finally able to speak, "So she was right."
"She was."
"Dad always said she's always right. I just didn't want to believe her." She began sobbing and Eret went to hold her.
"I know. I know," he soothed. "I don't want to believe it either. Your father was one of a kind and the world just lost someone great." He wiped a few tears away, "But it's okay because he will always be with us. Especially for you and your brothers. It's just going to be hard right now for all of you. Just try to be there as much as you can and take everything he has taught you and use it, okay?"
She nodded trying to dry her eyes. "I'll try. I'll try my best for all of you." And she looked at the ex-trapper with so much determination that it made the man laugh. "What?"
"It's just… you sounded like your dad right then."
For some reason that made the young girl feel a little better, but it didn't soften the loss that the Haddock family had.
Everyone in the village stood on the shoreline watching the ship slowly burn. All the Haddock family stood out in front from Valka to Little Stoick. All were trying to be strong not only for the people of Berk but for each other. Gobber made a very beautiful speech one that brought tears to anyone's eyes as he mentioned what Hiccup meant to all of them. The lad being a beacon of light for the future of the tribe. A lunatic son for his mother and himself. A devoted husband who always had eyes for the Hofferson girl all his life. A caring and loving father to his three children. A wonderful friend to all who needed it. And most importantly a great man who changed the lives of his people and who knew what it meant to be a Chief. Even his closest friends added to the speech with their own stories about Hiccup making the day a more light and heartfelt experience which Astrid was more than grateful for.
Late one evening the new widow was finally able to connect all the piece on what happened that day on her boy's outing.
She had caught her youngest drawing at Hiccup's still untouched desk. Something he let them do all the time as long as they didn't touch his schematics. The drawing Stoick was doing made her tilt her head in question, "What are you making there?" It was quickly hidden and the single mother tried to coax it out of him, "It's okay, just let me see. I promise I won't be mad if that's what you're afraid of."
He still hesitated not sure if he was ready to show her the artwork.
Her blue eyes soften, "Would you rather tell me why you're up so late?"
Again the boy hesitated, but eventually told her, "I had a bad dream."
"Ah," she brushed her fingers through his red hair feeling the light dampness that was an indicator that he did wake up from a nightmare. She continued to run her nails through his locks. A trick she learned that would calm him down. "Would you like to tell me about that then?"
He shook his head and he kind of wished that his mother would leave him alone.
That left Astrid at a lost. It made her wish Hiccup was still here. Her boys always seem more inclined to open up around their father more than her. She sighed feeling more defeated today than ever. "Then I think we should head to bed."
He panicked at her words, "Can I please have a couple more minutes!"
Being at the end of his big round puppy dog eyes, Astrid could see why Hiccup was always swayed. "You have until I'm ready then."
Stoick nodded and waited until his mother was far enough away to pull out his drawing. This was something that his father had taught him. Whenever he had a bad dream Hiccup would take him to his desk, sit the seven-year-old on his lap, pull out the blank parchment and had him take the time to sketch out and swirl lines until he was relaxed to go back to sleep again. Most of the time he would end up sketching his dream and once he was done his father would take it and burn it with the candle's flame. The father would then proceed to hug the boy tight and once the drawing was gone he would tell him, "There no more bad dreams for you tonight."
Thinking about it made Little Stoick's eyes water as he angrily pressed the charcoal down and scribble out his feelings. He was so focused in on himself he never noticed that his mother had come back from the bedroom.
Astrid stood next to her son in shock and she placed a hand on his small back hoping it would calm him down. "Stoick, what is that?"
Stoick tried to take deep breathes to regain his composure, but through his weeping, he finally told her, "The monster."
Astrid carefully stole the drawing away from him and studied what was on the page. She was taken back at what she saw, but how her son described the creature was inaccurate. It wasn't a monster at all, but a dragon. And from the shape of it, she knew the species all too well. It was one of Fishlegs' favorites. The Crismon Goregutter. But what her son said next made her sob.
"That thing killed Daddy."
She crushed him into her arms and silently started to cry. Hiccup had failed. Astrid had failed. They all had failed their son. For instead of enforcing the love of dragons and how wonderful they are. They forgot and now her smallest son feared them. When she tried to correct her mistake it only made it worse. The lad had already made up his mind and what his mother was saying only made his reasoning sink deeper into stone. That the dragon was a monster and there wasn't any good to be found in it because it killed his father.
"Then what should we do with this then?"
"Burn it," Stoick answered. "Dad always made sure that when my dreams were burned it wouldn't come back." His breath was shaky when he uttered his last words, "Maybe the monster won't either."
She nodded and pulled the candle to her and held the parchment safely enough that it would be destroyed by the flame. Casting a glance at Little Stoick as she did this broke her heart. For on the corners of his mouth she saw the smallest of grins. A smile that proved to her she was too late to change the young boy's mind about dragons. It also gave way to start speaking about these wonderful creatures, which were safe in the hidden world, only as myths and legends.

Random thoughts on HTTYD RttE S3 (Ep1-7)
Ep1 - Dagur is a lot of fun honestly, but I'm not sure how far this newfound "good faith" of his goes
Wow, he's a good fighter
I'm kinda afraid of that antidote, ngl
Hiccup, da heck? Why did you throw yourself out of the cavern??
Aww, the little sad look on Dagur's face when Hiccup yelled "I hate you"
Okay, yeah he is a good guy now
Well, more of a wild card really - I have 4 seasons ahead of me, I wouldn't be surprised if Dagur went back to the dark side at some point
The ep ends, and the only thing I know for sure is Astrid's not gonna be happy when those two get back to the Edge
Ep2 - Snotlout's high pitched yell is so funny, but I feel bad for laughing
Hookfang casually screeching at the Fire Worm Queen
Uhm, what history?? How do those two know each other? I wanna knowwwww! Im guessing it's from the first 2 seasons
Hiccup has so much patience for his team, istg - no wonder he's super snappy to his enemies
Okay, this Cavern Crasher looks super cool in all his originality (i mean, green fire, how cool is that??) but he's also a bit disgusting
The Fireworms babies are so so precious, and their cave looks really cool
He's singing the baby a lullaby?! How is he being so soft, omg
Ha, Hookfang's awkward grin when the Queen looked at them
"Ho, ho, no you don't!" You go, Fishlegs! No one touches baby dragons on his watch
Hookfang got himself the worst possible babysitting job ever - he's gotta protect a hundred baby dragons, their mother, and his dumb of ass rider
Queenie is such a cute nickname
Hookfang is the real MVP of this ep
Another cute Hiccup&Snotlout interaction - Hiccup is really supportive of everyone, it's sweet
Ep3 - Fishlegs' 2nd name is Justin?
Wow, Astrid and Ruff look weeeeird like that - and why is Gothi also wanting him??
Uhm, are we not gonna comment on Fishlegs dreaming of Snotlout confessing to him dressed as a bride too? No? Okay, then
"Why would Hiccup put you in charge?" Uhm, he's the only one with common sense, for starters
Okay, that throwing-the-pot thing is not cool, guys, please stop it,it's giving me ptsd
I want Fishlegs to punch one of them, but I don't think it'll happen - not now at least
Okay, I feel like Hiccup was a little harsh there. Fishlegs should not have to be their babysitter, they're old enough to know their actions have consequences. Before being disappointed in Fishlegs, he should be so at the others
Meatlug is such a sweetheart
So is Fishlegs
They actually kept the name Smidvarg, that's awesome
I would prefer to fight an angry Monstrous Nightmare over giving any money to Snotlout too
"-but he usually geeks out with me!" I love the nerdy friendship these two have, it's so sweet
Yay, Darkvarg!
Those two nerds are adorable
Ep4 - We're off to a great start already, with tired dad Hiccup
Oh, more of Spitelout huh - not sure how i feel about that
I kinda wanna see Snotlout's handwriting now, after he criticized his dad's so harshly
Spitelout built an entire house by himself in a month?
Hiccup deserves credit for being able to realize "Asia Fondue" was supposed to be "deja vu"
Snotlout is basically cradling Hiccup in that trap
I'm not understanding all this fear - compared to the last few we've seen, this one doesn't look too scary honestly
Snotlout was super confident about the S thing
Okayyy now it's getting dangerous, Snotlout please don't try to fight Stoick
Hiccup, ever the peace-maker
God, David Tennant is such a good voice actor, and the accent is so satisfying to hear, I caaaaan't
Okay, for once Stoick's comment was unnecessary, I don't think Spitelout knew of the underbelly thing either
Yeahh, Snotlout doesn't want to fight Stoick and Hiccup on this, he'd leave with them if his dad wasn't there
Hiccup really has the Jogersons' psyches well thought-out huh
Yayy for reconciliation! I think
I don't understand what was the meaning behind Snotlout and the yak, but it was cute that he saved it
And of course, he named it too
Ep5 - So remember when I said, way back there, that this show was gonna like to hurt Astrid a lot? Yeahhhh surprise, surprise
I really would like to meet the Thorston family
Wow, they all look serious for once, Snotlout even asked her, all worried, if she was okay, damn
The Buffalord reminds me so much of an Ivysaur, he's sho cute
Oh and he puffs! Niiiice
Okay, that was a cute Hiccstrid moment
Oh my lord seriously?? Hunters now??
"Fishlegs, I thought you were above name-calling!" God I hate him, but I love his dialogues
No medicine works that quickly, but sure
Also, yeah Buff is gonna puff out as soon as they try to move him, so the hunters are losing today
That was a powerful ending that I was not expecting
Ep6 - I'm honestly not sure who's gonna be proved wrong by the end of the episode, Hiccup's paranoia, or the gang's carelessness
Of course the chicken has a meal plan
It's annoying me that they're swimming with their clothes on, but I'll close my eyes to it
So the dragons aren't okay
You cannot tell me the other riders didn't hear Fishlegs' screams
It was something in the water I'm guessing, since Toothless is okay
Okay, maybe I'm biased, but isn't it always Toothless the last one standing, or the one dragon that doesnt get hurt, or the only one that notices something's wrong? Like, what about the others? Are Toothless' skills that above the other dragons that he notices what none other does?
This was a salty comment, but I do wonder
Omg, Gobber actually tried to follow Tuff's regime for the chicken
Tuff's chicken completely threw off Both Gobber and Stoick, that's great
Wow, they really all blame Hiccup, was not expexting that
Tuffnut saves the day!!
Omg, the Grimoras are so creepyyy, ew
Where did Fishlegs get those rocks?
Sooo, Snotlout and Hookfang burn down places together for fun? Okay, you piromaniacs
Tuffnut has a genuinely cute relationship with his chicken
Ep7 - God, of course those three would notice something like that
Also, all of them ganging up on him, and Fishlegs is just able to hold them all - everyone is so tiny compared to him, I wonder the damage Fishlegs could do if he wasn't so gentle
"Who said it's a she?" Snotlout keeping all options on the table like the dumbass bi he is
Snotlout is so delusional i love/hate it
Fishlegs' annoyed face and the little tsk before "Pretty much" was everything
Even Hiccup?? Jesus, no privacy
The shots they take at Hiccup's leg are really funny, im sorry
Aw, Fishlegs does have a crush on her too! We know she does because it was mentioned way back in S1 i think
I just noticed Snotlout's hut has a statue of him holding it, my god
I really wish someone would mention that Snotlout also went through a phase of crushing on Fishlegs, bad, even if it was while he was Thor. That would probably be funny
Awww, I kinda ship them now, they're so cute!
Aw, she has her own hut? It's so tiny and cute
Like, I know she's not staying, but I can't tell why yet, and I really don't want this to end in heartbreak...
These scenes with the Nadder flocks and then Toothless and Windshear are a nice reminder that the dragons are still, well, dragons - the others are already so well-trained I forget they were wild before and had to be trained
I hate myself for this, but I can't help but think Heather is using Windshear as an excuse... There's something else here
Hookfang!!! No, let go of the tsundere dragon!
Sooo, Tuff speaks spanish, okay
"Beans, Snotlout. They're called beans!" "Beeeans~" Omg, these two i swear
Wow, so she is staying, okay, nice, I'm gonna enjoy seeing where this is going
Soo, that's it for the first part of S3
This was a long one, hope that's okay :T

Hiccup's "Don't worry, Dagur won't hurt me" in DoB: The Night and the Fury is quite ominous after reading yours and evilwriter's ideas 👀
Which post was that again? I might have to search through my blog to find it. :’D
Anyway, it’s always been a very ominous line. Especially considering Dagur’s actual dialogue and behaviour and what it leads to throughout the entire episode.
It’s obvious that Dagur has a love for tormenting Hiccup and anybody else that’s easy to prey on, or that’s what Hiccup’s and Fishlegs’ dialogue in RoB’s episode fifteen ‘Twinsanity’ seems to tell us.
Hiccup: “Cool?! Last time he was here, he used me as a knife throwing target.”
Astrid: “That guy should be locked up in a cage!”
Fishlegs: “That’s what he did to me! He wouldn’t let me eat for three days!”
Snotlout: “*laughing* then he force-fed you rotten cod heads!”
Fishlegs: “Thanks. I almost erased that from my memory.”
So it’s obvious from the start that Dagur just likes tormenting everybody he finds an easy target, notice how Astrid most likely had no idea, judging by her angry comment.
What’s interesting is that this thing, this obsession didn’t start until after Hiccup saved his life and we see him again in DoB’s third episode ‘The Night and The Fury’.
Dagur: “Hiccup, old friend! You’re alive!”
Hiccup: “Uh, last time I checked. So… Haven’t seen you since-”
Dagur: “Since you saved me from that dragon attack back on Berk. You fought off a Night Fury!”
Tumblr media
I especially love his face here, look at how touched he is that Hiccup saved his life.
Dagur: “And you were like - WHAM, WHAM- *swings sword* “Dagur! Save yourself!” And I was like “what?! Okay, I’m outta here!” But you stayed!”
Tumblr media
Dagur very clearly has a sort of fondness, maybe even an infatuation, with Hiccup at this point, stemming from Hiccup rescuing him heroicly from a Night Fury.
Something that might back this up is the ‘Twinsanity’ episode.
Dagur: “Ah, Hiccup! There you are!”
Hiccup: “Dagur! Was just thinking about you! Hey, remember that time we went swimming and you tried to drown me?”
Dagur: “*laughs, a lot* Oh, the laughs we had. Bored again! *pushes Hiccup aside*”
Dagur: “Just a moment. Something is going on here.”
Hiccup: “I can explain.”
Dagur: “Where is it?”
Hiccup: “Look, it’s just one drag-”
Dagur: “Your leg.”
Hiccup: “…”
Dagur: “Nevermind, I heard all about it.”
Hiccup: “You heard all about what?”
Dagur: “You. The Red Death. Defeated it all on your own.”
Hiccup: “Wha?! Me?! Look at me! How is that even possible?”
Dagur: “Right? That’s what I thought too! But then I heard about the trained dragons and it got me kind of… tingly.”
This could, of course, just be Dagur feeling “tingly” about the possible dragons on Berk, but what could also have Dagur feeling “tingly” is that Hiccup really did fight and defeat the Red Death. He is missing a whole foot and part of a leg, after all.
And like, he gets all up in Hiccup’s personal space when Hiccup explains that the Night Fury got away and Dagur suggests hunting it down together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clearly, Hiccup is having none of that. Look at how scared the poor boy is. That isn’t just discomfort, that’s straight up worry and fear.
Then there is this piece of dialogue as he does this.
Dagur: “Come on! Howl with me! It feels good.”
Tumblr media
And let’s not forget these golden lines.
Dagur: “Hiccup, every since I left Berk, I haven’t been able to stop… thinking about you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiccup’s reaction is a very appropriate “O_O” as Dagur, of all people, almost seems to be confessing to him. And it looks genuine too judging by his expressions. I’ll be getting back to this again soon.
And Hiccup seemingly knowing the Night Fury he fought is the very reason Dagur is on Dragon Island in the first place! Hiccup inspired him.
Hiccup: “Well, that’s kind of strange… Well, I’m flattered!”
Dagur: “Not you personally, you and that… Night Fury! It’s like you knew that dragon! You were inside its head, rattling its cage! And that, my muscularly challenged friend, that’s when I knew I needed to know about dragons too! So I came here and I learned about them. One. By. One.”
So Hiccup definitely served as an inspiration for Dagur to come to Dragon Island. And let’s not forget, Dagur doesn’t even know at this point whether Hiccup survived his “attack” on the Night Fury or not.
It does seem like Dagur was using this dragon hunt on Dragon Island to bond with Hiccup. Confessing about being inspired by him, talking dragons, talking personal weapons of choice, even telling him about his sister, who was already missing for a long time now at this point and probably even a heavy subject to just casually mention like that.
Hiccup: “Whoa! Nice crossbow…”
Dagur: “My hunting weapon of choice. You carry… Hmm, just a shield?”
Hiccup: “Yeah, yeah, just-just a shield. Just a plain old shield.”
Dagur: “Very… ornate. My sister had one like that. I myself have never felt the need to hide in combat.”
Besides bonding with Hiccup, it’s also like Dagur seems to be testing him too.
Assuming that Hiccup is there to hunt dragons, questioning him about the Night Fury’s fate, sounding dissatisfied when he tells Hiccup about never having the need to hide in battle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Definitely feel like Hiccup is being tested by Dagur during this episode. Nevermind how he treats him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at Hiccup in that second pic. Dagur’s grip on him was clearly hard enough, painful enough, to get him to sooth or feel that spot once he finally let go.
Dagur: “I know it’s on this island, Hiccup. I can feel it right here.”
Tumblr media
Look at that face down below, just before Dagur decides to invade Hiccup’s privacy again.
Tumblr media
Dagur: “You can feel it too. Don’t you, Hiccup?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This counts as unwanted touching.
Also this:
Hiccup: “Ah no, I just feel really awkward.”
Dagur: “*laughing maniacally and pushes Hiccup to the ground, hard* You bring the funny, Hiccup! I’ll give you that!”
And!
Dagur: “I’m gonna grab my gear. Then, we’re gonna get us that Night Fury… Brother.”
Hiccup: “… Brother?”
Dagur: “That’s right, you and me.”
So yeah, we can tell from this one scene alone that Hiccup’s “Don’t worry, Dagur won’t hurt me. I’m his brother.” has always been very ominous and Hiccup basically put himself in a very precarious situation by separating from Astrid, Snotlout and Fishlegs.
I get it, they had to find their dragons and stop Dagur from hunting down and harming Toothless, but that is still quite a risk Hiccup took, considering Dagur’s current behaviour and their shared history.
Like, look at Dagur’s face when Snotlout pops up and he realizes Hiccup isn’t alone.
Tumblr media
Clearly an “explain yourself” type of expression. But whether it’s a “my newest bestest friend is a liar” or a “my new crush lied to me and isn’t alone” type of expression, I don’t know. And that while it turns out that Dagur didn’t exactly come alone either later in the episode.
Like, Dagur gets obviously pissy when he discovers Hiccup’s friends are on the island with him while knowing that he had a whole armada there with him.
AND LET’S NOT FORGET DAGUR JUST CASUALLY BRINGING UP THAT HE WOULD GLADLY OFF STOICK SO HICCUP CAN BE CHIEF.
Dagur: “You know, we’re a lot alike, Hiccup.”
Hiccup: “Really? How-how-how is that?”
Dagur: “Well, we’re both born leaders.”
Fishlegs: “Oh yeah, he’s right about that.”
Dagur: “Sons of chiefs.”
Hiccup: “Yeah, that’s true.”
Dagur: “Who had to be eliminated so we could gain control.”
Hiccup: “Yes,- Wait, what?! No. No! My dad hasn’t been eliminated from anything!”
Dagur: “But he could! Easily! Just say the word and I’ll- *fires his crossbow, aiming between Fishlegs and Snotlout*”
Hiccup: “…. Yeah, that’s… something to think about.”
So Dagur has definitely offered Hiccup to kill his father for him so they could both realize their respective birthrights to be chief. And at this point Fishlegs and Snotlout, while previously disturbed by Dagur’s want to hunt dragons, are now downright fearful themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the point that Hiccup feels the need to try and reassure them that Dagur won’t hurt him because he’s his “brother.”
Then there is also Dagur’s line. “Oh Hiccup, don’t you know that a trapper’s trap can trap the trapper?”
How big of an impact didn’t this one night have that Hiccup not only repeats this line three years later, but that he somehow manages to say the exact same thing word for word.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wouldn’t be surprised if this night had an impact on Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs and Snotlout.
But that one scene that I was discussing in great detail pretty much only sets up Dagur’s infatuation with Hiccup, which apparently also includes a series of tests so Hiccup would need to keep proving himself as the object of Dagur’s fascination, whether he wants to be or not.
It’s that final scene from this episode that actually turns Dagur’s unhealthy crush into a full-blown obsession. When it turns out Hiccup didn’t actually save Dagur’s life and has been lying to him ever since that day on Berk.
Dagur: “Your father lied to me- YOU lied to me!”
Hiccup: “He was trying to keep the peace between our tribes. So was I.”
Dagur: “By making a fool?! Out of me?!”
Hiccup: You don’t really need a lot of help with that, Dagur”
Dagur: *attempts to draw his sword*
Toothless: *snarls*
Hiccup: “Your move.”
And not only does it turn out that Hiccup has been lying this entire time, but then he proceeds to call Dagur a fool and, in a way, threatens him with Toothless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at these faces. When he states that Hiccup “could’ve been his brother” and is now his enemy instead and Hiccup not only just accepts it, but also threatens him again? Look at that heartbreak! Look at that anger! This is just before Hicctooth tries to fly away and Dagur immediately flings a bola at them and then proceeds to try and kill Toothless, even with Hiccup in the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a way, Dagur had hoped for this night to turn into something.
And it did, just not in a way Dagur would’ve wanted.
And it’s basically because of this night not turning out the way Dagur would’ve wanted it to that he decided to go to war with Berk. He just focussed on hurting Toothless because hurting Toothless meant hurting Hiccup. Just like at the end of DoB, when Dagur took Stoick away and tried forcing Hiccup to choose between two of the most important people in his life.
So yeah, sorry to go so ham on your ask again, but these are the reasons why Hiccup’s line is as ominous as it is.
There are several red flags all over the place that aren’t just making him uncomfortable, but his friends as well.
And it basically only grows worse from here.
Tumblr media
^^^^^ Hiccup doing a double take to make sure they’re not being followed.

I’ll Be Right Here
Hiccup x Reader @of-stardust-and-dreams requested: “I loved you” with Hiccup please :)
Send in a Request | Masterlist
Distraught was not a strong enough word to describe how Hiccup was acting. Toothless had disappeared four days ago, and there was still no word from the scouts about his whereabouts. They hadn’t detected any intruders, and there were no signs of struggle in the town or the forest outside of Berk. The tracking dragons had traced Toothless’ scent to the river, and from there, it was like he disappeared, as if he entirely vanished off the face of the planet.
You understood his worry. Hiccup had been your best friend for as long as you could remember. When you were children, the two of you were practically inseparable. As you grew up and got more responsibilities, you saw less of each other, but he was never too far away. If his apprenticeship at the forge or his father started to grate on his nerves, Hiccup would come find you, and you would wander out into the forest together. When he found Toothless in the clearing and befriended him, you were the first one he told. You always admired Hiccup’s ability to be undeniably himself, no matter what situation he found himself in. He had grown more confident over the past few years, sure, and he carried himself more proudly as the son of the chief, but deep down, you knew he was still the same Hiccup that, as a four-year-old, had kissed your cheek and swore to defend you from even the mightiest dragons; he was still the same loving goofball Hiccup.
But with Toothless gone, it was as if a light had gone out inside of your best friend. He was sullen and gloomy. He hadn’t combed his hair. Bags were starting to appear under his eyes. And you were pretty sure he hadn’t eaten since the disappearance. You were worried about him. Which was why you found yourself standing outside his house in the pouring rain.
“Hiccup!” You called, knocking loudly on the door. You pulled your cloak tighter around you. Odin above, the rain was cold. “Hiccup, open the door. Please!”
After another knock, just when you had almost given up, the door opened a crack. You couldn’t see Hiccup, and the door didn’t open any further, but you took it as an invitation to enter anyway.
The fire burned bright in the hearth. Stoick’s old books and Hiccup’s hand-drawn maps were strewn across every visible flat surface. Hiccup sat on the floor in front of the fire pouring over two different dusty tomes. He didn’t move when you approached him, but you could see his eyes dart up to look at you before going back to the books.
“Cloudjumper found some scales in a field to the north,” he whispered, pointing to the location on the map in his book. “They’re trying to pick up the scent again.”
“Hiccup, that’s great.” You put a hand on his shoulder. Even under the fur cloak he was wearing, you could feel how tense his muscles were. “You should try to get some rest before they come back.”
“Can’t,” he mumbled as he flipped the pages in the books. “I could be missing something. I need to make sure we aren’t missing something.”You sighed. “You’re no good to him when you’re this exhausted. I know you want him back, but he would want you to take care of yourself, too.”
“No.” Hiccup shook his head, shrugging your hand away. “He’d want me to find him.”
“You’ll kill yourself if you keep going like this. Look at yourself, Hiccup.” You gestured to his face. “You’re a mess. You haven’t slept in days. No one has seen you in the mess hall. I understand that you want to find Toothless, but-”
“’But’ nothing. I need to find him.” Hiccup’s shoulders tensed more as he stared down at one of the books in front of him. “I need to get him back.” Then, almost inaudibly, you heard him mumble. “I’m nothing without him.”
Your heart broke. “Oh, Hiccup.” Gently, you placed your hand on his shoulder again. This time, he didn’t shrug it off. “You know that isn’t true.”
“Isn’t it?” His voice was harsh. “Before I had Toothless, no one wanted me. Not Gobber. Not Astrid. Not even my dad. You remember—I was the village weirdo. Do you know how hard it is to not be loved by anyone? To feel like you’re somehow wrong just for existing?”
You sighed, letting your hand drop from his shoulder to your lap. “I loved you.” Hiccup froze. “You were just too preoccupied to notice.”
“I-”
You cut him off. “I swear to you, we’ll find Toothless. But you have got to take care of yourself. Even if that means a little nap and light snack. He’s going to need you in top shape when he gets back.”
A moment of silence passed. And another. Then another. You were starting to think that Hiccup had ignored you when he finally shut the books in front of him. “Okay,” he whispered, nodding to himself. He looked up at you and you could see just how tired he was in the firelight reflected in his eyes. “You’re right. I… I’m sorry. I’m just worried.”
“I know you are. And you have every right to be.” Softly, you smiled at him.
“Thank you. For everything.” Hiccup returned your smile as he stood, offering you a hand to help you up off the floor. “I think I’m gonna get some rest before the scouts come back.”
“I think that’s a good idea.” You waved slightly, turning to head back out the door.
“Wait.” His voice stopped your hand just centimeters away from the door. You turned around slightly so that you could see Hiccup. His face was starting to redden. “I’m sorry. This is stupid.” You remained silent, nodding slightly to encourage him on. “I… would you… I mean… would you mind staying?” He spoke so quickly that you almost couldn’t understand him. “I mean, just until the scouts come back, that is. I don’t want to miss them or anything. And I think having you here would uh… help me calm down a little bit.” By this point, Hiccup’s face was bright red. “I’m sorry. You probably have things to do. Forget I said anything.”
You chuckled softly, turning fully away from the door. “Hiccup, it’s fine.” You reached out, grabbing his hand. “I’d be happy to stay, if that’s what you’d like.” He nodded sheepishly, his eyes not meeting yours. “Okay. Now go get some rest.” You gestured towards the stairs to his room. “I’ll be right here.”
