Spell to Influence Others
You’ll Need:
A gold candle
An elder twig
Remember that bestselling book about winning friends and influencing people? It's been a hit for ages because people want to influence others. In addition to being a decent human being, you can work a bit of magic to help expand your range of influence so others will respond to you in the way you deserve.
Light the candle, and say “Influence grow, increasing power, persuasive magic every hour.” Drip some of the melting wax on the tip of the twig, coating it completely, saying “Others will finally listen to me, I am in control of all I see.” Extinguish the candle, and carry the twig in your pocket, or place it in your office or workstation, to help you influence those who you may come into contact.

Oh sugar, sugar, I love you
The way their relationship is outed, it’s all because he’s a light weight and overly affectionate.
All it takes is a few hits and he’s feeling floaty and content, comfortable leaning against the couch. He’s on the floor, Eddie and Robin taking over the couch behind him and Nancy sitting in the recliner across from them.
They’re taking the night off together. It’s been a few months since Spring Break and they’re all finally physically healed and healthy. Their whole group is taking the rest of the year off from all the things. The older ones, staying in town a little while longer before going back to normal. Right now, Eddie brought a few joints and a promise for relaxation. Steve and Robin set up the location (Steve’s house) while Nancy got the snacks and drinks.
It’s a Friday night, no need for rides or work for any of them tomorrow.
Steve’s feeling the high coming on and sighs, and he holds up his hand towards Robin before putting his head back up against Eddie’s thigh, “this was a great idea, babe”
It makes Eddie chuckle, brushing Steve’s hair and patting the top “you’re such a lightweight”
He just let out a hum while closing his eyes, enjoying the head massage and the sounds of his best friends softly talking. He’s relaxed enough at this point that his brain is shutting down and his simple hum turns into humming and before anyone in the room realizes, he’s softly singing ‘Sugar, Sugar’ even though they don’t have any music currently playing.
Eddie notices first, especially since Steve’s head is against his thigh. His focus completely on Steve, doesn’t notice the girls looking at them in giggling confusion. They all hear him sing out, “Oh, sugar, sugar. You are my candy boy, and you got me wanting you”
It’s adorable, it makes all of them smile seeing the blessed, relaxed and happy Steve. Between all three of them, they haven’t seen it in a long time. Steve doesn’t notice all eyes are on him, he just continues to softly sing along to the music in his head, getting to his favorite part. Getting a little louder and opens his eyes to look up at Eddie, “I just can’t believe, the loveliness of loving you. I just can’t believe it’s true, I just can’t believe. The wonder of this feeling, too. I just can’t believe it’s true.”
It’s so cheesy, but it makes Eddie melt. He’s all too aware of the other eyes on them, so he doesn’t automatically lean down to steal a kiss.
That doesn’t register in Steve’s mind. He pouts before pushing himself up and crowds in close to Eddie, sitting on his lap and wrapping his arms around him. Kissing him softly before sighing and resting his head against Eddie’s shoulder, softly says “oh, honey, I love you”
The girls are staring at them with their jaws on the floor and wide eyes, even under the buzz of their highs.
Eddie ignores them in favor of looking at Steve. Wrapping his arms around him, shifting just enough to be comfortable and able to properly cuddle his boyfriend close. He listens as Steve falls asleep against him and he relaxes, breathing a sigh before closing his own eyes.
It’s not the best spot to sleep, should probably move and head to Steve’s room. But Steve’s already asleep and the most relaxed he’s been in years, he’ll deal with a little back pain and his legs going numb.
He falls asleep soon after, holding Steve close.
The Next Morning
Robin is determined to figure out if what she vaguely remembers what happened last night, is true. She can’t exactly believe it yet, since she was sharing a joint with Steve. But she also doesn’t think she’s that creative enough to dream up Steve singing decently well while high out of his mind and not just singing but singing to Eddie.
She steals some of Steve’s clothes and after a quick shower, she’s refreshed and on a mission. Meets Nancy in the hallway, she stayed in the guest room while Robin took up soulmate status and stole Steve’s bed for the night.
They make their way downstairs, enjoying the quiet sounds from the birds waking up. A plan set in their minds to either find the boys asleep together or apart. Robin’s hoping to see Steve still wrapping in Eddie’s arms just so she can poke fun at her soulmate when they’re alone. Nancy’s wondering how it happened, when it happened.
If it is true, or if this is Steve’s way of making it real.
Despite leaving the boys asleep on the couch last night, they’re still a little surprised to find them exactly the same. Or actually, now Eddie has Steve trapped between him and the couch. Their legs are a tangled mess under the blanket Robin threw on them the night before. Eddie has his arms wrapped around Steve, hugging him close. And one of Steve’s arms is wrapped around Eddie while the other is trapped between them.
It’s soft and precise. Maybe a little uncomfortable, too.
Robin pulls Nancy back from walking closer, “let’s give them another hour?” She whispers and looks at how relaxed Steve looks, “we can grill them later, let’s go get breakfast?”
With one last look at the boys, they pull shoes on before leaving quietly. A silent promise to bring back food. They end up grabbing an easy breakfast from the diner, eats in there in a comfortable silence with some comments here and there. It’s not until they’re waiting for the food they ordered for the boys when they get back on the topic.
“I know he can be cheesy, he’s a romantic at heart. But that was a little too sweet” Nancy says with a shake of her head, “although maybe Eddie likes that”
Robin snorts, “yeah he doesn’t come across as someone into cheesy dorks.”
The food in to-go boxes and some coffee for all of them, they’re on the way back to Steve’s. It’s nice, the town isn’t fully up for the day. There’s only a few people out for morning runs and walking the pets, nearly no cars on the streets yet.
A quick drive later and they’re walking back inside and can hear some quiet talking. Robin quickly makes her way into the living room and finds Steve and Eddie still on the couch but now they’ve switched positions. Steve’s the one sitting on the couch, Eddie’s the one in his lap with his head against Steve’s shoulder.
It’s so domestic and adorable.
Robin kinda hates it, just because she doesn’t want to share her soulmate. But if this is love, she guesses she’ll deal. At least it’s Eddie and he knows how codependent she and Steve are.
“We got breakfast for you,” she speaks up and enjoys how they jump apart, “And I have so many questions”
She has a front row seat to the blushes that blooms on both their faces, she points to the kitchen before making her way to join Nancy. Hears a panicked whisper from Eddie and a just as freaked one back from Steve, shaking her head she says loudly, “Come on, Dinguses, we have so much to discuss right now. Stop panicking and eat your breakfast”
It’s quiet at first once they all sit at the table. The boys are sitting next to each other, she can tell Steve has a hand on Eddie’s thigh. She sips at her coffee and shares a glance with Nancy and then looks at Steve, her soulmate that kept this a secret.
His face must be burning from how red he is and she only likes it because he can get her red in the face with just a few lame jokes. Eddie’s blush is still there but not as deep as Steve’s.
“So, Steven, Edward. Do you have anything to tell us?” She props her head in her hands glancing between the two of them, out of the corner of her eye she sees Nancy sip at her drink. “Also just so you know I have a vague memory of last night.”
Steve’s eyes widen and he drops his fork, “what did I do?”
She snorts, “well, besides sing a cheesy love song without music? You climbed into Eddie’s lap and kissed him. Right in front of us”
Steve’s eyes widen and then slowly sinks down his chair, hiding his face in his hands, “oh my god. I can’t- i shouldn’t get high”
“Dingus, no! That’s- it’s not that embarrassing. It’s just us, yeah? I’m just- we’re just surprised is all” She frowns, sharing a look with Nancy before getting up and standing next to him, “Stevie, I’m you’re platonic soulmate, right?”
He nods, face still covered and she doesn’t bother moving them.
“Then you shouldn’t be embarrassed with me. If anything, we’re embarrassing together. Okay?”
“Embarrassing platonic soulmates for life” he mumbles out and peeks between his fingers, she smiles and nods “sorry Robbie”
Shaking her head, she pulls his hands away to look at his face. He’s still red but there’s at least a he’s smiling now. Squeezing his hands before letting go and sits on the table instead of her seat. Looking at Eddie, “So, my soulmate?”
Eddie’s eyes widen and it brings her joy.
“Robbie, don’t be possessive right now! We- we’ve been dating for a while now” Steve admits and gets her attention back on him, “I- I wasn’t sure if we’d last. So, I- we- uh,” he looks away from her and she can tell that he’s also avoiding looking towards Nancy.
Eddie pulls Steve’s hand away and tangles their fingers together, “we wanted to be sure, we were going to tell you and everyone else.”
She easily accepts it and knows that when they decide to have Soulmate Night, Steve will tell her more or more like she’ll have to pry it out of him. For now, she’ll tease and poke fun at the two of them. She doesn’t know where Nancy’s head is at, but the other girl is smiling and promises not to spill to anyone else. They continue to eat and enjoy being together before going on with the day.
It’s only a week later that she sees another Dingus singing performance. It’s the same song, and he’s high again. But this time it’s in Gareth’s garage.
Robin loves the Corroded Coffin boys, they’re all dorks and can be a lot but overall they’re so sweet.
She takes a hit of the joint and looks around for Steve. A smile breaks out on her face when she sees her soulmate leaning against Eddie as they sway-dance while talking with Jeff, she goes to take another hit before walking over. “We’re listening to Dio right now and you’re slow dancing”
Jeff snorts but the couple continues on, she sees that Steve’s has his eyes closed. “They’re a lot, yeah?”
She nods, biting back a comment on the cheesiness. Instead she watches them sway, it’s honestly a weird picture. Eddie’s dressed in his usual black jeans and a dio shirt, his jacket and vest are thrown on a chair. Steve’s wearing a pair of dark blue jeans with a baby blue sweater. Both their faces have blushes.
“Can you believe these two?” She looks over and finds Gareth standing beside her, “they’re sickening, I swear”
She rolls her eyes but smiles, “I’d say cheesy, actually”
Before anyone else could reply back, they all watch as Steve tries to stand still but sways closer to Eddie, a smile playing at his lips. Even with the music currently playing is Metallica, she can just barely hear a hum start out of Steve, sees Eddie let out a chuckle and pressed a kiss to Steve’s forehead.
It’s like the universe decided they needed to hear Steve sing. They hear the beginnings of Sugar, Sugar. It’s cheesy and lame, but the look on their faces is worth it.
“Oh honey, honey, sugar, sugar… you are my candy boy.” Steve sings the last bit and pulls Eddie close to press their lips together, after a minute, they rest their foreheads together.
It’s only because of the music stopping that she manages to hear them whisper “honey, I love you” to each other. The whole thing makes her heart melt and want to punch them for making her a hopeless romantic.
So she doesn’t say anything but she sees the others all shake their heads with smiles, Gareth’s the one that catches her eye.
“They’re too much, yeah?”
Shaking her head, she smiles and glances back at the couple now just hugging. Eddie’s rocking side to side with Steve tucked into him, his head resting on Eddie’s shoulder, it’s adorable. “Maybe, but I’m happy that they’re happy, ya know?”

Idk how else to end this without typing up even more words. Sooo we’re ending it there and tbh this was basically me rambling with enjoying the high I’m currently getting from an edible ✌️
I’m a fucking sucker for steddie secret relationship and silly reveals. And also a high Steve is what I’d imagine is a clingy and affectionate lightweight. So I had to include that. But also then I decided he absolutely had to sing Sugar, Sugar.
Anyway I’m rambling again. Pls ignore any typos or weird phrasing, I was high while I wrote a good chunk of this 🫡

tai is often characterized as this 'always positive, keep on smiling, hide the pain with a joke' yang-lite and having thought about it more, i... i don't think i agree?
first things first: tai quite literally wears his heart on a sleeve; he may not talk about his feelings a lot--presumably, since we have primarily seen him interact with his daughters, so it might just be a case of not wanting to burden them with his problems--but he definitely shows his emotions, clear as day. there's no pretence that he's fine, he's just the type to take his time and not rush it.
you know who kinda does do the whole 'gotta stay positive, smiles all around', 'hide your fear with a joke' thing that yang took upon herself to be for ruby's sake, to 'pick up the pieces'?
summer rose.
summer, who upon being caught leaving by tai, turns around to hide her emotions, before facing tai with a smile and some levity: "you know how ozpin gets. mystery after mystery." <- an opening for further jokes.
it's not one-to-one comparison--e.g. yang doesn't need to turn around to steel herself first (that's what ruby does)--but like. the influence is there; the acting of like everything is fine, great even! see, i'm smiling and even making jokes!! :)
it's just. yang trying to fill the void summer left behind.

Too Small To Be Afraid (Chapter 12)

The past few days at Pacific Deskmate High School have been more or less an improvement over the first two. But despite somehow becoming friends with a perthean, I've been struggling more than ever to hide my fear.
On Secandday, Derrick dropped his Biology textbook right beside me on his desk! All I could do was stand there, adrenaline flooding through my system as I ruminated on how easily I could have been crushed. Would he have even noticed if the book landed right on top of me? Was he trying to kill me? Honestly, it wouldn't be hard at all for him to drop a book like that on me and make my death look like an accident...
On Sirdday, he poked me in the middle of Algebra to ask if I had written down a certain formula before the teacher cleared the whiteboard. I'm not sure whether or not he was trying to be gentle, but the force of that unexpected poke was enough to send me into a spiral about how he could easily pin me down with nothing more than a single finger if he wanted to.
And on Forsday, after our English lesson on Greek and Latin root words, I was glad to watch him happily ramble away on the subject. It was only when he lifted me up off the desk that I guess he somehow managed to forget he was dealing with a human! He snatched me up so fast, so effortlessly, as if I didn't even weigh a thing! I thought for sure I would be flung across the room! He apologized, so I know he could tell I was scared, and that's not good.
If I were to slip up and reveal to Derrick that I have a fear, it'd ruin our friendship for sure! We'd be worse off than we were at square one! I need to make sure I'm doing whatever it takes to keep this fear hidden from him. I've never let a perthean find out about my fear before, and I don't plan on letting one find out now! Who knows how Derrick would react after finding out about my fear?
Ever since Derrick and I became friends, I've felt guilty for having this fear. I don't want him to think I see him as some kind of monster! But standing here on the balcony, watching him approach me, all I can think about is how much I want to get out of here before it's too late!
I tighten my grip on the balcony railing until my knuckles turn white to keep myself from running away, but that doesn't stop my legs from restlessly fidgeting beneath me. My heart pulsates as I'm covered by Derrick's shadow, and my lungs gasp for more air than I can take in with each shallow, shuddering breath. I need to get away from him!
"Hey, Kaylin!" Derrick says, smiling down at me.
My heart skips a beat as I stare into his big blue eyes, nothing short of terrified at the sight of my perthean friend. I try in vain to back up, my grip on the railing stopping me. I know I can't just run away— that would reveal that I'm afraid. As slowly and as steadily as I can, I take a deep breath and hold the cold surface air in for a moment before setting it free.
"Hi, D-Derrick!" I say, kicking myself for stuttering.
"How are you this morning?" Derrick asks, holding out his index finger for me.
I know I can do this, I've done it before. I release my hands from the balcony railing and carefully wrap my arms around Derrick's finger. It twitches in response to my touch, catching me by surprise. It still blows my mind how something as minute as a twitch to a perthean can translate into a harsh jolt for a human like me!
"I'm good!" I manage to squeak as Derrick lifts me from the balcony. "And you?"
"I'm doing well," he responds with a slight chuckle that I'm almost certain I can feel through his hand as he sets me down in his palm.
Once I'm settled in his hand, Derrick turns and starts heading to our first class. As we're moving along, I find myself staring at the fingers that surround me. They're a bit... close. Too close. Each long, curled digit is about the same length as I am, and about as wide as a tree trunk. A trunk of a human-scaled tree, that is— like we have in the undercity. I don't even want to consider the thought of a being with fingers that would match the width of a perthean-scaled tree! Such a being could easily hold a perthean in their hand the way my deskmate is holding me now...
I watch Derrick's fingers as they curl inward, every second inching closer and closer to where I sit in the center of his palm. My core tightens and my racing heart sinks in my chest. Does he realize what he's doing?
Without warning, each massive extremity begins to slowly wrap around me. I let out a gasp. What's he doing?! I look up at Derrick as his grip on me tightens. He's... smiling?!
My insides churn upon seeing a twisted smile plastered across my deskmate's face, and narrowed brown eyes that show no signs of mercy. My heartbeat rings in my ears as I squirm between the fingers fastened around me in a pathetic attempt to escape from Derrick's unyielding grip on me.
"W-what are you doing?!" I stammer, trembling in my deskmate's clutches.
"What I should have done the moment I first laid eyes on you," he says, letting out a loud, deranged cackle as he tightens his grip on my figure.
As I'm gasping, fighting for air, a sob rises in my throat.
"I-I thought we were friends!" I cry.
My deskmate lifts me close to his eyes. Those narrowed brown eyes... there's something off about them.
"No real perthean would be caught dead befriending a pathetic little weakling like you!"
"P-please!" I beg, tears streaming down my face as I struggle with all my might to escape this perthean's grasp. "D-Don't hurt me!"
"Huh?"
I open my eyes and look up at my deskmate. He's stopped in his tracks, raising an eyebrow at me. His big, blue eyes look to be searching mine for some kind of explanation to what must have sounded like quite a perplexing remark.
Blue...! I knew his eyes were blue!
I look at my surroundings. I'm in Derrick's open palm, and his fingers are only bended toward me slightly. I look at myself. One of my legs is curled inward, and the other is stretched out as if I tried to scoot backwards. Oh no. What happened here?
"Kaylin?" Derrick says as he lifts me closer to his face, his eyes filled with concern. "Don't what?"
"I-I—" I stutter.
I stare into Derrick's eyes, my heart sinking further in my chest with each rapid beat. I can't think of anything to say! He's bound to realize I have a fear now!
"Don't... don't forget there's an English quiz today!" I blurt out.
Really?! That's all I could think to say?!
"Oh, is that all?" Derrick says with a chuckle. "I could have sworn..."
I resist the urge to curl up into a ball with all my might as I quake in my deskmate's hand. Is he about to call me out?
"Nah, it's nothing. Nevermind," he says, continuing the walk to our first class.
That was close. Too close.

Brittney huffs and puffs down the hall with the neon pink and orange lunchbox she retrieved from her locker after gym. Even after cool-down, showering, and changing back into our regular uniforms, I'm surprised to see her still struggling to catch her breath.
"Hey," I say, coming alongside her after we reach the cafeteria. "Good running today."
"Thanks!" She laughs. "Running always takes it out of me, but knowing lunch was coming was enough to keep me going!"
We sit down together at an empty table and take out our lunch. I unwrap what I'm decently sure is a turkey and swiss sandwich and take a bite. Brittney takes out a thermos and a grilled cheese.
"Grilled cheese again?" I ask.
"I guess so. What's the note of the day?" Brittney asks.
I'd completely forgotten to check for a note from Dad. I rummage around the brown paper bag in front of me and pull out a note. This one says:

So it is with a person's heart.

"Wow," Brittney says. "I didn't think your Dad was one to quote Zenara."
"He found one of my mom's old poetry books when we were moving and has been flipping through it over the past few days," I say, setting the scrap of paper down on the table. "I'll probably be getting more notes like this."
"So..." Brittney says, folding her hands together and propping her chin on top of them. "Speaking of looking into people's hearts, how are things going with Derrick?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" I ask, befuddled.
Brittney rolls her eyes. "You know, seeing him for how he is on the inside in spite of how he appears on the outside! Like the quote?"
"So that's what that means?" I say, looking back to the note. I've never really been one for poetry— it usually goes right over my head. I figured it was the same with Dad, and especially Brittney.
"Anyway, spill it! How are you two getting along?" Brittney asks, eyes wide with anticipation.
"You say that like we're dating or something!"
"You know what I mean, girl, now spill!"
"Well," I sigh, "things are going... well, they're going."
Brittney pouts. "Come on, you know I want more than that!"
"Okay, fine, fine!" I say, waving my hands. I stare at my sandwich in contemplation. "Ever since we became friends... I've felt guilty for having a fear. And not only that, it's been getting harder to hide it!"
"Go on," Brittney says, her brows turning upward.
"I guess it's only a matter of time before Derrick finds out about my fear. And after that, I'm not so sure he'll want to stay friends with me."
"Why not?" Brittney asks.
"I mean— who would want to be friends with someone who only thinks of them as some kind of monster that's out to get them?" I rest my cheek on my hand in defeat. "Maybe I should just tell him I have a fear and get it over with. That way, at least I'll know how he feels, and if he doesn't want to be friends anymore then it'll hurt less now than it would if he found out later on."
"I-I wouldn't do that!" Brittney blurts out.
"What?"
"I-I mean, normally I'd tell you to be honest, but Derrick..." Brittney trails off, looking down into her soup.
What's she going on about?
"Brittney, what about Derrick?" I ask.
Brittney shakes her head. "Nothing. It's nothing. What I mean to say is... I don't think telling him outright that you have a fear would be the best idea."
"Why not?"
"Well, some pertheans don't really know how to act around humans who are afraid of them. For some, it might get to them."
My insides twist. "Are you saying Derrick is like that? Would he really be hurt to find out about my fear?"
"Well..." Brittney says, averting her gaze. "All I'm saying is I wouldn't tell him if I were you. Derrick is... sensitive."
I know Brittney's known Derrick much longer than I have. If she says I shouldn't tell him about my fear, I'm inclined to trust her judgment. I just can't help but wonder... what isn't she saying?

"So, what are you up to this weekend?" Brittney asks as we approach the spot on the balcony where we've been meeting up with the boys.
"I don't know, I might try my hand at gardening. We found one of those indoor planters when we were going through our stuff before the move."
"Ooh!" Brittney says, clapping. "Gardening! I've always wanted to try! Especially since the undercity is so void of greenery compared to above ground."
"After that, Dad and I will probably watch Stranded together," I say, wondering how much we need to catch up on before Restday night's new episode.
Brittney's eyes get wide and she grabs onto both of my arms. "Did you say... did you say Stranded?!"
"Um... yeah?" I say as I look down at the hands gripping my arms, her grip a bit too tight for my liking.
"I. Love. Stranded. It's like, my favorite show ever!" She gasps. "Do you read fanfiction?! I'm working on this one story about Jack and Merlot— I should totally send it over to you!"
"Hey guys!" my deskmate says.
Dread fills the air, and a burning anxiety creeps up my spine. My legs quake, and I nearly trip over them as I leap behind Brittney to shield myself from this perthean boy. This perthean boy... who's supposed to be my friend. I realize I shouldn't be hiding from Derrick, especially since I don't want him to find out about my fear— but no matter what I do, I can't seem to stop myself from shaking uncontrollably like a cold, wet puppy!
"Kaylin? Are you—" Derrick starts.
Brittney laughs. "If you think this is bad, you should have seen her this morning when I snuck up on her with a hug!"
What? Brittney didn't do that! I didn't even see her today until it was time for gym! I look at Brittney, and she looks back at me. She winks.
"Ha, ha... yeah," I say, slowly coming out from behind my friend. I fold my hands together in front of me, all the while trying my hardest to suppress my unrelenting trembling.
I look up at Derrick, who stares right back at me with a blank expression. He hums flatly. Does he buy it?
"Well, I'm not sure where Kevin went, but Kaylin and I should probably be getting to Biology," Derrick says. "Are you okay waiting by yourself?"
"Yeah," Brittney says. "Kevin's a slacker. I'm used to it by now. You guys go on ahead!"
A knot forms in my throat as Derrick lifts his index finger and places it in front of me. With how many times we've had to do this so far, even today alone, shouldn't I be used to this by now? I try to be discreet about wiping my sweaty hands on my skirt, and then manage to wrap my arms around Derrick's finger in spite of the sinking, spiraling feeling in my gut.
"Have fun, you two!" Brittney calls out as Derrick lifts me from the balcony.
I expect Derrick to say something in turn, but he remains silent. He places me in his palm and turns to head to our Biology class. He remains silent the whole trip there.

Our Koronian class has nearly passed us by, and Derrick has barely spoken a word to me since the incident at the balcony before Biology. I try to focus on the lesson being taught, but the history of adjectives in the Koronian language fails to occupy my brain as much as my anxiety does.
Does he know I have a fear? Is he mad at me? Does he think I see him as a monster? Does he still want to be friends with me, or is he thinking about some way to go about telling me how inconsiderate it is to have a fear of pertheans? What if he hates me? What if we end up being stuck in an even more awkward relationship than what we had when we first met? What if he doesn't want to be deskmates anymore?
My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of Derrick's notetaking. I know he loves languages, so I was sure he'd be taking as many notes about Koronian as possible during class. What I find odd, though, is that I haven't heard him write anything down until now. After a few seconds of pencil scratching, he goes silent again.
I try to take my focus off of Derrick and keep it on the teacher, but just as I tune back into the lesson, his notebook slides into my peripheral vision. Do I dare look? I pretend I don't see the notebook and shift my focus away from Derrick. After a moment, he slides the notebook closer to me. As worried as I am, I can't help but wonder what he wants to tell me. I hesitate, but take the bait and read the note presented to me.
Are you afraid of me?
Hot blood rushes to my cheeks, and my heart pounds against my ribcage. My whole frame trembles as I turn my head to the shaking hands in my lap. He knows.
I try to steady my quivering breaths. I can't let myself panic. Not now. Not in the middle of this class, not in front of all these pertheans... not in front of Derrick. We're so close to the end of the schoolday. All I have to do is sit through the rest of Koronian, get to the balcony, and go home! He'll forget all about this tomorrow, and I'll have a better chance to hide my fear then.
Derrick taps his notebook, drawing my attention back to it. Why is he so insistent? He underlines the question he wrote with his pencil. He's not going to be satisfied without an answer, is he?
I stare down at my own notebook laying atop my desk. What should I do? Should I answer? Should I try to continue ignoring him? How long can I keep this up?
As I'm lost in contemplation again, a large, warm surface presses against my back, poking me. That's it. I scrawl down a response in my notebook.
Why are you so insistent on me answering this question?
I can't keep from trembling as I push my notebook to the side of my desk. Derrick leans over in his seat. He's so close! I try to take deep breaths in and out, but my constant shuddering makes my breathing anything but smooth.
Derrick sits back in his seat. Silence. Maybe he'll finally leave me alone. Just as I begin to let my shoulders droop and my muscles relax, I hear it again: the scratching of Derrick's pencil against paper. A few seconds later, he pushes his notebook back into my view.
Why are you so insistent on not answering this question?
He just won't let it go! What should I say?! What should I do?!
Brittney said I shouldn't tell Derrick about my fear because he's 'sensitive.' But what was it she didn't tell me? What's going to happen if I'm honest with Derrick? Should I lie?
Derrick underlines the question again.
Are you afraid of me?
My heart sinks, weighing me down, and there's an aching unease deep in my inner core. Do I tell him? Can I tell him? I stare at my notebook as anxiety creeps up my back and threatens to choke me. Hands trembling and barely able to grip my pencil, I write my response and slide my notebook back into Derrick's view.
I'm sorry.
He's quick to scribble down a response.
You're sorry?
I don't think and simply let my pencil glide along my paper. I slide over my answer:
I'm sorry that I'm afraid of you.
I sit in my anxiety, nervously awaiting Derrick's inevitable reply. What will he say now? Will he call me a coward? A bigot? Would he call me... a tiny?
Silence. He must be satisfied with my answer. I just hope things aren't awkward for us after class. I rub my legs to keep them from jumping up and down under my desk, and return my focus to the teacher.
Scribbling. It's quiet at first, then harsh. There's the sound of an eraser rubbing the paper, followed by more harsh scribbling. I clench my fists as tears prick the edges of my eyes. He's really going to let me have it, isn't he? My heartbeat, oddly enough, slows down as I think through what must be in store for me. Deep down, he's no different than that man, is he? Merciless. Unforgiving. Cruel. No perthean could ever be understanding when someone thinks of them as a monster, could they?
Derrick slides his notebook back over. Blinking back tears, I brace for impact, breathing in and out, and turn to see what it is he's penned.
Let me help you.
What? What's he talking about? He's not going to let me have it? I hesitate before looking back at Derrick as apprehensively as ever. He's... smiling.
"What?" I whisper.
He points to what he wrote on the page, and looks back at me. I spin back around in my seat, my mind buzzing with questions. What does he mean? Is that even possible? Is he joking? I pull my notebook back towards myself and start writing. Once I'm finished writing, I push my notebook back into Derrick's view.
What are you talking about?
Again, he doesn't hesitate, but writes his response swiftly.
Are you free to meet behind the school after class?
An uneasiness creeps up from my gut and into my throat. I gulp. He wants to meet after school? What does this mean? Is he serious, or does he have something more sinister in mind? I stare at my hands in my lap. What should I do?
I turn around and look Derrick in the eyes. As he smiles at me, his wide blue eyes seem to smile, too. I have no idea what to say, and I can barely breathe! He looks at me with anticipation. Almost as if to ask, 'Well? What do you say?'
I nod. I have no idea what I'm supposed to expect, but at this point, what do I have left to lose? Derrick laughs softly as he continues smiling at me.
"Mr. Drake and Miss Finch!" the teacher says, raising her voice and catching Derrick and I by surprise. "Is there something the two of you would like to share with the rest of the class?"
I turn back around in my seat, my heart fluttering and my cheeks as hot as ever.
"No, m'am!" Derrick and I both exclaim.
I try to focus on the lesson again, but all that comes to mind is my deskmate. Really, what could he possibly mean by helping me? And what did I just sign up for?

okay
let's talk about alchemical readings and rwby.
as the resident crank it would be remiss of me not to begin this little jaunt with a very important disclaimer: like all esoteric lenses, alchemical philosophy is an analytical framework that relies quite heavily on symbolism, and because of that it is really important to be mindful of how you're engaging with the text. symbolism services narrative, not the other way around, and you should always let the narrative guide your understanding of its symbolism. if that doesn't make sense to you, don't worry, because there will be lots of examples to illustrate what i mean.
before getting into the weeds, we're going to lay out some basic alchemical concepts.
in simple terms, the core philosophical idea of alchemy is a gradual process of transformation from base material into the sublime; conceptually the transmutation of lead into gold is also the perfection of human body and soul. alchemy is about change, refinement, rebirth, wholeness.
the prima materia—first matter—is the perfect and formless primordial matter of which all forms of matter are derived. if you're familiar with certain other alchemical readings of rwby you'll have seen it defined as the "raw material" that is transformed into the philosopher's stone through the alchemical process; that is not inaccurate but it must be stressed that the idea here is that ordinary matter comes from the prima materia and the philosopher's stone IS the prima materia, made perfect and whole again through the great work.
<- rwby directly invokes this idea in 'all things must die' ("all bonds dissolve/infinite matter/will always evolve").
yliaster is another name (coined by paracelsus) for the prima materia, which he described as "completely healed human being who has burned away all the dross of his lower being and is free to fly as the phoenix."
the great work is the actual process of alchemy. it is classically broken down into four (or three) stages, each represented by a color:
nigredo, black, involves putrefaction and charring—symbolically, death. decay. rot.
albedo, white, involves purification and separation. the undifferentiated mass of the nigredo stage is clarified and divided into two opposing principles.
citrinitas, yellow, is the "dawn" or reawakening.
rubedo, red, involves coagulation and recombination after the separation undergone in albedo.
citrinitas is not always treated as a discrete stage, instead sometimes being combined into a single stage with rubedo or understood as the transition between albedo and rubedo. hence "four (or three)." there are also a great variety of other stages, mostly given in sets of seven or twelve and listed in myriad sequences, but for our purpose this four-or three-stage model is the most useful.
now!
ordinarily with an alchemical reading, we would begin by finding a narrative pattern of symbolic death and rebirth, but for rwby we first need to interrogate the goliath in the room, namely:
YES, IT'S ABOUT SALEM.
there is a tendency in alchemical readings of rwby to interpret salem's immortality as a lifeless unchanging stasis, and thus to read her as an embodiment of the anti-theme, and surprising absolutely no one i find this to be… well, just not right at all.
rwby initially sets up the pattern through the mantra pyrrha recites when she awakens jaune's aura: "for it is in passing that we achieve immortality. through this we become a paragon of virtue and glory to rise above all, infinite in distance and unbound by death. i release your soul, and by my shoulder protect thee." 'rising' explicitly calls back to this ("we are paragons of virtue and glory/death can't bind our endless story/infinite and unbound") and 'indomitable' reiterates the idea ("when we strive, we transcend/even death cannot end our climb"); this is important to note because the repetition correlates with revelations about salem's story.
the key thing to understand here is that 'the lost fable' is narratively structured around salem's deaths:
first, the god of light bites her and she's drowned in the fountain of life (notice her last breath leaving her mouth; she chokes for air and her eyes rolls back as she loses consciousness, sinking into the depths)…

…and then the god of darkness brings the moon down on her head and she wanders in a haze until finding her way back to the pool of grimm, where she seeks her own destruction and is created anew.

the brothers cast salem into the fountain of life, which pools under the roots of a tree and appears to be infinitely deep. she drowns as she sinks into its darkness—then abruptly reawakens hitting the water again, now only a reflecting pool, and the water-light of aura shimmers over her hands as she rises.
"for it is in passing that we achieve immortality…" the reprisal of "infinite and unbound" in 'rising' draws a line from pyrrha's mantra to the lost fable for a reason; it's to help us understand the truth behind the story jinn is telling. it is not even subtext—it is text. especially after volume nine, which clarifies the symbolic meaning of the tree growing above the waters.
through death, salem became immortal—infinite—and the infinite waters of life and creation became finite.
that water was the prima materia of the brothers' world; it combined with salem—the prima materia changes itself and combined with all imperfect bodies that it touches—and thus she herself became yliaster, "the perfectly healed human being who has burned away all the dross of his lower being and is free to fly as the phoenix."
the dross in her case being the brothers and their divine order, she rebels against them, and they destroy their world. she is all that remains. they leave salem behind in the end of all things and, phoenix-like, she rises out of the ashes of her destruction. yliaster is the prima materia; it contains everything, is everything, and everything is released when it is broken apart.
"this force of pure destruction could not destroy a being of infinite life, so it created a being of infinite life with a desire for pure destruction." destruction exists within creation exists within destruction: salem embraces death, throwing herself into the "blackened pools of annihilation" in the land of darkness. nigredo.
she's torn apart and reborn, and remnant is born with her, a pure-white being clambering into a revitalized new world she cannot touch; after a long separation, her partner returns to her and she experiences love, connection, freedom for the first time in years, until she learns that he seeks the destruction of this world and a return to the old and they burn each other alive in a violent parting. albedo.
salem's arrival in atlas literally at dawn incites the struggle between herself and cinder, which culminates in salem beginning to relinquish control and as her true feelings come to the surface. citrinitas.
thus, what remains of her story is rubedo: reconciliation with cinder, reunion with ozma, peace between humans and grimm (<- unity of opposites), and finally symbolic transcendence over death by convincing the god of light to ascend, with "death" being specifically the threat of annihilation represented by the divine mandate.
ozma's arc, of course, mirrors hers very closely: the god of light breaks him apart, the god of darkness burns him (nigredo)—his reincarnation divides him very literally into two, and symbolically divides him between duty and desire (albedo)—he awakens with the dawn, reconciles with oscar, and begins to face the truth in atlas (citrinitas).
as alchemical readings go, this one is not difficult or arcane or remotely ambiguous. it isn't even symbolic; the deaths and resurrection are explicitly literal and occur onscreen with the accompaniment of helpful explanatory notes. the goliath in the room is making aggressive eye contact.
but we are not done here yet, because i never do anything by halves and we have symbolism to talk about.
THE GREAT WORK.
salem, you will recall, is yliaster, the prima materia of remnant. you will also recall that the prima materia is the formless primordial matter from which all other matter is formed, and thus it is both the raw material of the great work and the philosopher's stone. yes? good. rwby interrogates this contradiction through the idea of balance, which the god of light conceives of as an inviolate order that must be designed and enforced. but, as the blacksmith explains, his understanding is a limited falsehood:
"balance is not two forces locked in never-ending battle. balance is an ecosystem, an organism, a living, breathing thing; thus balance cannot be restored by force or calculation. it only requires love and the patience to see things through to the end."
here is where i think a lot of the fandom—not people doing alchemical readings necessarily, but in general—miss the mark by interpreting this to mean that opposition and balance are antithetical to each other, that a system with two opposing forces is inherently out of balance. rwby's metaphysics are grounded in hellenistic philosophy, plato in particular (<- neoplatonism had a significant influence on the western european alchemical tradition), and the philosophical ideas undergirding the ever after follows herclitus.
(i recommend perusing the category pages for λόγος, justice and strife, the harmony of opposites, φύσις, ψυχή, cosmology, fire, water/the river, life/death, and waking/sleeping—i know that sounds like a lot of reading, but it isn't, as what we have of heraclitus is only fragments and the summaries provided are brief and accessible.)
the two key ideas we're interested in here are flux and strife. the world exists at rest in a continual state of change; a river is always the same river, but its flowing waters change from moment to moment. this conception of the world—"changing, it rests"—is flux. strife incites change through the tension between opposing forces. strife is not discordant but rather harmonious: "men do not know how what is at variance agrees with itself. it is an attunement of opposite tensions, like that of the bow and the lyre." (B51) just as a bow could not fire and a lyre could not sing without tension on the strings, so the world could not be without strife.
this is what the blacksmith means by balance. true balance is not war; it is strife. not two forces locked in never-ending conflict, but opposite tensions in harmony with each other. destruction and creation are opposing forces, but each exists within the other and they are both interdependent and inseparable.
salem embodies this theme. through death, she became life, and by destruction she was created. human and grimm, light and darkness, creation and destruction. she seeks to tear down the huntsmen academies and incite revolution in pursuit of a new world. she is balance—and the god of light inflicted his punishment upon her not because she failed to understand the importance of life and death, but because her dedication to change challenged his false and hollow conception of what balance means.
this guides the alchemical reading of the wider narrative in significant ways. salem is the prima materia of remnant—yliaster, broken apart to release everything contained within—and thus both the subject and the aspiration of the great work. when we examine other characters through this lens, it is in relation to her.
we'll begin by discussing the narrative's big symbols: the rose, the broken moon, the tree, grimm, silver eyes, and fire.
traditionally, the rose symbolizes rubedo. in most alchemical readings of rwby, ruby rose is accordingly presumed to represent this stage for obvious reasons—however, if we pay attention to how the narrative itself symbolically identifies the rose:
ruby's emblem, which she inherited from her mother, is a burning rose.
our first sighting of it is on summer rose's grave, above an epitaph—"thus kindly i scatter"—taken from a poem which uses the death of a rose as a metaphor for the speaker's loneliness and despair.
"red like roses fills my dreams and brings me to the place you rest," and "red like roses fills my head with dreams and finds me always closer to the emptiness and sadness that has come to take the place of you"
adam's emblem is a withered rose.
"the moon will sadly watch the roses die"
"maybe red's like roses? maybe it's the pool of blood the innocents will lay in when in the end you fail to save them"
"the rose will grow to be a seed, from every life another leads" (<- evokes an image of deterioration, rot; the rose going to seed)
"some roses will never bloom, some dreams will rot on the vine"
in rwby, the rose represents death. it burns, it withers, it dies, it is scattered, it never blooms; thus, it does not symbolize rubedo but rather the death and decomposition of nigredo. why then is ruby's primary color red? we'll get to that in a little while.
the moon traditionally symbolizes albedo, which is a process of separation, reflection, and illumination. the god of darkness shattered the moon as he departed after slaughtering humanity, and:
"the moon will sadly watch the roses die"
"the sky is turning black, light is fading fast, but we don't surrender; shattering the night, radiant and bright, armored in splendor, shining forever […] we're rising like the moon"
salem falls into and through the reflection of the broken moon when she casts herself into the pool of grimm
the broken moon symbolizes the death and resurrection of humankind, which—as noted—is the beginning of the albedo stage in salem's story.
so in rwby the broken moon does indeed represent albedo.
the tree, obviously, represents the whole circle of life-death-rebirth, with its symbolic meaning on remnant following its actual function in the ever after, where it is the cosmic tree, the river, and the ever-living fire. thus cinder and salem falling into pools of water at the base of a tree are symbolic (and in salem's case, also literal) rebirths.
grimm are "manifestations of anonymity," "the darkness," hates and feared as soulless monsters, destruction incarnate, thought to have no purpose other than to exist as "mankind's greatest foe." rwby is consistent in using the grimm to symbolize ostracism, persecution, fear of the other or the unknown, and salem's exile is justified (in ozma's mind) by her grimmness. which is to say, the grimm represent the separation undergone during albedo; they are the darkness to humanity's light. (hence, the narrative building toward coexistence between humans and grimm, exemplified by the faunus.)
silver eyes are described in opposition to the grimm and likewise represent the separation of albedo; the light to grimmkind's darkness. salem's experimentation with combining them into one being is a faunus for good reason, and i do not think it is coincidental that cinder has become less vulnerable to the glare as she finds balance with the grimm arm. and speaking of her:
the phoenix is another traditional symbol for rubedo, which naturally calls to mind associations with fire. citrinitas, similarly, is represented by the dawn or the "solar light," overtaking the moonlight of albedo, which again connotes fire. in rwby, fire is used to symbolize hope and wrath, which are thematically intertwined (hope ignites fire -> loss of hope incites wrath -> wrath ignites fire, and is thus a form of hope):
"even the smallest spark of hope is enough to ignite change […] nature's wrath in hand, man lit their way through the darkness"
"a simple spark can ignite hope, breathe fire into the hearts of the weary…" becoming "i can't wait to watch you burn"—salem seeks to smother ozma's hope, and thus rekindle her own.
"the light of hope is taken and discontent is the contagion; the blinding eyes that burn a yellow flame, the embers that remain will light the fuse of condemnation"
"we were destined to light the flame of revolution; consider this the spark" + "i think father may have just provided the spark that's going to set this kingdom on fire"
flame imagery used in relation to cinder and salem in the volume eight opening and jaune throughout volume nine.
cinder being… a spark…
as i noted, the paradigm shift between salem and cinder in atlas represents the transition from albedo to rubedo through the dawn. in rwby, the kindling spark symbolizes citrinitas and the changing flame that follows is rubedo. the role cinder will play in reigniting salem's hope is obvious, and the symbolic use of fire to reawaken first jaune and then neo in volume nine only underscores this meaning. in combination with the dust and ashes motif going on with salem and the grimm, the fire becomes specifically phoenix imagery.
now!
why, if the rose is nigredo, is ruby red?
in order to explain this, we first need to examine team STRQ, because the answer is that the great work is cyclical.
in team STRQ, we have:
summer rose, whose red-and-gold interior is masked by her white exterior
taiyang xiao long, who is all yellow
raven branwen, who is an amalgam of red and black
qrow branwen, who is mostly white except for his red cape
the branwen twins also transform into corvids, traditional symbols for the nigredo stage; qrow's scythe harbinger and raven's allusions to the morrígan underscore their symbolic association with death.
if we consider these color associations through an alchemical lens, the pattern that emerges is—by design—muddled and strange, but not actually that convoluted:
raven "tried to leave," but couldn't. she became the spring maiden by mercy-killing a girl whom she loved as her own family, and never having dealt with that grief or guilt, is trapped in nigredo whilst projecting a hollow image of rubedo—her pretense of strength. she runs away from her feelings, rather than challenging or examining them; what she needs instead is to separate and reflect honestly on herself.
summer did leave. her white outer shell—the phantom she left behind—suggests albedo, but her true colors are what she wears beneath the cloak: red trimmed with gold. she found salem, listened to her and awoke to the truth of this world, and then joined her. but in order to do that, she had to separate from her own family, joining salem exile; thus her individual rubedo brings her into alignment with the grimm in salem's albedo.
qrow, shattered by the dissolution of his team, is undergoing his own albedo. like his sister, he wears the trappings of rubedo—he is the one left standing, ozpin's most trusted agent—but this is a false projection which crumbles once it challenged by the revelations of ozma's deceit. his drinking and reluctance to be around people for fear of bringing them to harm make it impossible for him to move forward until he finds new hope and decides to try again. like his onetime mentor, he experiences citrinitas in atlas and the beginning of his transition into rubedo is marked by the introduction of maroon (desaturated red) and tan (desaturated yellow) into his atlas fit.
tai, lastly, is interesting because in one sense, he is citrinitas in isolation, a dawn with nothing to illuminate because his team left him behind, but in another sense, tai mediates the generational transition between team STRQ (albedo) and team RWBY (rubedo). he is yang and ruby's father and—crucially—he raises both in idealized casts of their mothers. ruby feels compelled to live up to the fairytale idea of summer rose; tai tells yang that he sees all of raven's good qualities in her and warns her to be wary of being too much like her mother, in almost the same breath.
ruby's red and yang's yellow represent the culmination of what tai wishes could have been; the summer rose who returned whole and alive, the raven branwen who chose reflection and reawakening instead of running away. but both colors are only things projected onto them—false images.
in truth, ruby represents nigredo. her scythe and the burning rose both connect her to death; her semblance disassembles her into a swirling formless mass of rose petals; her own identity is lost beneath the idea of summer rose and the first nine volumes of the story are devoted to the long, slow journey to her symbolic death at the roots of the tree.
only with her ascension has she begun to undergo albedo (notice the greater emphasis on her silver eyes and the flaring white light as she comes out of the tree; also, "otherside, did you mean to leave me half or whole? will i ever be complete? when will i become all of me?" and "what is left? i know it's you and i when i look inside"—she is beginning to separate herself from the imaginary paragon.
weiss represents albedo—her story is fundamentally about separation from her family, leading to self-reflection and growth, and in the process she has become an emotionally intelligent, insightful person who consistently helps others draw out and clarify their hidden emotions. her mirror motif and her knight summon further represent this: the self and the reflection.
blake represents citrinitas—her golden eyes, her association with the black king, her identity as a faunus, all support this reading. her time with the white fang was her albedo (she lost herself, gradually began to see herself in a new light, and finally separated herself from everything adam represented) and her personal moment of citrinitas is the removal of the bow and meeting with sun after she reveals herself as a faunus, after which she begins her journey of rediscovering herself and reintegrating with her faunus heritage.
finally, yang represents rubedo—her fire, her red eyes, "scathing eyes ask that we be symmetrical, one-sided and easily processed, yet every misshapen spark's unseen beauty is greater than its would-be judgment," "feel like i'm finally unbroken, feel like i'm back from the dead," the whole thematic conceit of bumbleby being the catalyst and the flame, the dawn and the sun, and so forth, two-in-one, "we're protecting each other."
the team collectively represents rubedo in relation to salem, in that they will be the ones primarily negotiating with her and this will obviously not begin to happen until ruby has her personal moment of citrinitas, which is to say not until ruby meets the real summer rose.
as a final point of interest, the four qualities (and relics) of destruction, creation, knowledge, choice map neatly onto the four-or-three alchemical stages—destruction as nigredo, creation as albedo, knowledge-then-choice as citrinitas-then-rubedo—and given the parallelism between yang and cinder, blake and raven, and weiss and penny+winter, it is probably a safe bet that the summer maiden is a) not summer rose, and b) a character foil to ruby, which i think adds some weight to the gillian theory.

Finally got around to watching Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
and
100% honesty here?
I smiled-to-grinned-helplessly at every second of it! It is SO charming and SO expertly animated! The comparisons to the Spiderverse movies I've seen so far are 100% warranted and I genuinely hope loads of CGI animated movies follow these patterns/designs in the future because they're just SO refreshing to watch in a... maybe "engaging" is the word to use? You feel like you're IN the animation, reacting eagerly TO it, rather than sitting tiredly as you watch a rough draft with a few key splash pages go by.
I dunno. YouTube keeps recommending me people bleh-dunking on Disney's Wish and from what clips of that movie I've seen it looks SO dull in comparison to Puss. Like, I have 0 clue what Wish is about! I've seen maybe 4 5-10 second clips of it at most. There's a goat? The protag's bestie (besties??) are based on the 7 Dwarves? There's like 50 references to older Disney movies because it's supposed to be a celebration of Disney's 100th?
But strictly speaking from a visual perspective/demonstration/execution/exultation of animation prowess? Puss is INCREDIBLE. On a strictly visual/style comparison there is NO comparison. I'm speaking honestly here; I couldn't HELP but grin watching every second of Puss. It's a delight just to watch. I'd say that even if the story bored me and that is NOT the case. The story is SO GOOD. The story makes it an EASY 10 times better than what the brilliant visuals promised. It is SO worth the dollars I dropped on a rental watch of it, and it's definitely a movie I (a person who is NOT interested in movies until years later at BEST) would be keen to watch again.

I worked on this for far too long, admittedly, but it was so satisfying. Thanks to ADHD and a keen sense of Pattern Recognition, I’d been picking up on some things in Gen’s ads for a while that were bugging me and I set out on a mission.
The point here is to take note of all the repeated words, phrases, and even set-ups for different products that she has tried to promote over the past couple years. No one can ever say that she doesn’t recycle! (See what I did there? 😏)
Even crudely pasted together like this, it’s clear that she just regurgitates the same several buzzwords to try to create hype over products she is probably seeing for the first time.
And yes, this is the scourge of influencer culture at large, but this is an Anti Genevieve blog…so I’m dragging her specifically. 😘

I love playing as a bard whose biggest problems up until BG3 were trying to get her songwriting recognised and that the cute lead vocalist didn't like her back and now she's trudging through the Shadowcursed Lands in her Chanel boots using Disguise Self to keep a full face of makeup intact having been assigned torch-carrying duty because she still can't be trusted with a weapon yet and NPCs are telling her things like "you look like you can handle yourself" and "you have a strong sense of justice about you" with a straight face and she's just like
