Boost Your Medical Business in New York with These Simple Tips
Tumblr media
Starting your private medical practice is an exciting opportunity to take control of your medical career. Unfortunately, it is challenging and complicated. To keep things moving forward in your medical practice, you’ll need a clear and precise plan from the start. This step-by-step tutorial will assist you in establishing your medical practice.
If you are unfamiliar with “growth hacking,” it’s a new set of strategies that can help businesses develop and gain a competitive advantage. The blog features the most popular techniques for growing your IT healthcare firm and how app designer NYC enables you to stay ahead of the competition.
Before we get into the growth hacks, let’s look at the rules and regulations that go into setting up a medical practice.
1. Many medical clients will choose to establish an LLC company entity. This is an excellent choice for single practitioners or partners looking to open a small medical practice in New York. Physicians can also form a PC or LLP.
2. The name of your new practice must adhere to the naming guidelines set forth by the New York State Education Department. Before beginning any formation project, we do a name clearance search to ensure that the name is accessible for registration and does not contain any restricted terms or phrases. The company name must also appropriately depict the professional’s practice, and some documentation may be necessary if the Members hold any specialty certificates.
3. To open a business bank account when your corporation is established, you’ll need an Employer Identification Number. You can get malpractice insurance, recruit staff, negotiate a business lease, and hang your shingle after the company is legally created.
1. Create a website
Your medical practice requires an internet presence where existing and potential patients can find you. Fortunately, you don’t need to be an HTML expert to get started with a customized website.
Statistics show that 77% of patients utilize search engines before making an appointment.
The quality of your website, on the other hand, is critical to the success of any healthcare product marketing plan. It is a stunning website that identifies who you are, what you can do for your patients, and where they can find new patients through your door faster than anything else.
With smartphones accounting for 52 percent of all web traffic in 2018, this shift should come as no surprise.
Furthermore, every healthcare marketer should ensure that their website and healthcare marketing strategy are built and implemented with a mobile-first mindset. A reliable app designer NYC can help you accomplish this goal.
2. Stay on trend
As we’ve seen, the delivery of care has changed tremendously in the previous five months, with tele consulting becoming the new standard for doctors and patients worldwide.
That is why digital health organizations must keep up with the current developments to grow and provide access to individuals who require it, irrespective of their location. Even in a digital world, having the correct marketing strategy for your company can help keep it on the cutting edge of change.
3. Referral program for patients
A track record of excellent patient care and genuine concern will go a long way toward eliciting positive word-of-mouth and recommendations to friends and family. If you do receive a reference, make sure to thank your referring patients with a handwritten message, a phone call, or a small symbol of appreciation.
4. Post informational content on social media
Globally, there are over 1.94 billion monthly active Facebook users. And, as the site’s tagline implies, it’s all about making connections. A distinct professional Facebook profile for your medical business allows you to communicate with your audience regularly and remind them of your presence.
On average, 2.47 billion people use WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, or Messenger every day, and over 3.14 billion individuals use a minimum of one of the Facebook services every month, according to reports. It also allows you to track your marketing activities.
Posting helpful hints, breaking news, and other essential topics will ensure that your followers and fans remember you when they need medical support. It’s also a great place to promote your blog posts—useful and fascinating links shared on Facebook can be shared and passed around, thereby spreading the word about you.
5. Practice management system
The backbone of your practice is your practice management system. A practice management system integrated with your EHR system keeps track of all your front-office data and streamlines operations. Monitoring and conducting your billing and revenue cycle is one of the most important things you can do with it.
Not only will your employees use the practice management system to bill patients and send invoices/claims to payers, but relevant data will be shared between the EHR system and the practice management software, removing the need for duplicate records.

When it comes to engagement, captions are arguably as important as the image or video they compliment.

Achieving this effect comes down to knowing your audience and your brand voice. The former will ensure that your content is interesting, memorable. The latter will ensure that your content is consistent, recognizable.

The Explore tab is the place clients find curated content dependent on their past activities and commitment designs. As it were, Instagram watches what you do on the stage (e.g., the posts you like, offer, and remark on), at that point populates your Explore tab with comparable substance.
Instagram sources content with high commitment just as substance from accounts like those the client as of now follows.
11. Target the right audience with ads
In case you're in a serious space, you should think about utilizing Instagram promotions to showcase your image.
Instagram offers five advertisement designs: recordings, merry go rounds, photographs, canvas Story promotions, and Story advertisements. Each organization is joined into your intended interest group's Feed or Story, making it difficult to miss.
Obviously, you can become your Instagram nearness naturally, without spending a penny. However, this will require some investment. In the event that you don't have time, promotions will enable you to get where you're speeding up.
12. Track your performance with Instagram analytics
Tracking and understanding your analytics is the best way to guarantee you're on target to accomplish your Instagram Marketing objectives (see: #4) and goals.
Regardless of whether you're tracking impressions (i.e., what number of individuals saw your post), reach (i.e., impressions partitioned by number of adherents), or general engagement (i.e., how frequently a post is enjoyed, commented on, shared, or spared), there are instruments you can use to make the procedure simpler, speedier.

What I’ve Accomplished and Learned in 2019
My fear of making this post and, in turn, solidifying my entire year’s-worth of lessons has brought a slight feel of malaise into the back of my mind; something I’d think of for a moment then try to forget about because of how exposing and ‘final’ it may feel. It made me feel a bit sick thinking about. Maybe because I felt like.. I had something to live up to? A certain criteria to meet? Maybe so.
All that being said, I’ve somehow, by the grace of God, motivated myself enough to write this in full. As the title implies, this is a (somewhat) cohesive list of what I’ve both accomplished and learned in this last year, 2019. I’m not sure if I will do this every year or not, but eventually I did realize it’s something I have to do for myself, and for my journey of self-evaluation. That's why I gave in. So without further ado, let’s move on to the first on my list. :’)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
1. Removing myself from a toxic situation: A storytime.
Let me elaborate on that a little, so you’re not so lost.. Anyways! Back in 2017, I struggled a lot with depression and thoughts of self-hatred, even suicide. My home life has never been great, but at that point I had lost all my IRL friends and was alone. To make a long story short, I turned to Instagram as a home for my friendless self. I joined fandoms and posted regularly, but it led to me making friends with very manipulative and toxic people. And it wasn’t healthy. I would talk to them everyday, all the time. Eventually, everything came to a grand finale when my closest friend accused me of hacking/stealing his account that I apparently ‘had the password to’. (I had an old password. It was changed so I could no longer use the old one) He blasted me all over his account with a decent following, calling me names, and getting his friends to DM me messages of physical-appearance shaming. Top it all off with a “Go rot in hell or whateva” message from him, and I basically lost everything I thought I loved. I made a vow to myself that I wouldn’t end up in that situation ever again. I promised to focus on me, myself, and my mental health ONLY, in 2019. And I’d say I accomplished that. I’m proud of myself for that.
I was originally going to put this in the “things I’ve learned” category, but because of how big a deal this was, it had to be delved into a little deeper. And it ends with a big accomplishment; the restoration of my sense of self-worth and ability to appreciate myself. I’d call that a win!
2. Finally getting that new computer I needed.
Okay, not much of an accomplishment.. But I added it on this list because of how long I’ve actually had my previous computer. Probably for more than 5 years, if I’m being honest. It was an old, rusty, 32-bit disaster running Windows 7. The main motivation for me getting a computer was not actually how slow or glitchy it was, but it was because I bought Sonic Adventure 2 on Steam and couldn’t play it on my PC. I was pissed so convinced my parents to help me get a new one. Now I bask in all my Chao World Extended mod glory!
3. Concert tickets get!
Shortly after getting my new computer at the beginning of the year, my favorite artist and songwriter, Marina, returned to the music industry after a 3-4 year hiatus. As soon as a supporting tour was announced, I knew I had to get those damn tickets. It had been too long since the last tour, there was no way I was passing this one up! So after months of begging my dad, he FINALLY ordered them and we attended, not just any concert, but my FIRST live show ever. Forever grateful for that experience... for the most part. Eh, I’ll get back to that story later. On to the next!
4. Not one, but TWO dental surgeries!
Yes, it’s true. I actually got my braces on this year (my teeth were abysmal, to say the least...) and had to get two separate dental surgeries to remove my teeth. One for wisdom teeth, one for my back molars. This was to make room for my teeth separating and straightening out. It was hell. But not because of the recovery process, but because of how anxious I was while I was getting put out for the surgery. They kept trying to get me to fall asleep and I kept on talking! I was actually scared as the world went black, but before I knew it, I was lying in my bed at home in severe pain. Ahh, good times.
5. Self-expression and my venture into deviantART..
I’ve saved this one for last, as I feel it’s the thing that benefited me the most this year. I’ve taken the time to figure out what makes me feel creatively realized as a person. What makes me happy? What makes me feel good after I’m completely finished? I’ve learned that two things check those boxes: Drawing and writing. Even more specifically, songwriting.
Tumblr media
I always had known from my earliest years that I wanted to be an artist. I clearly had the passion and was willing to always learn and grow. I never cried over ‘failing’ as a child, I always just wanted to do better. I think that quality pays off for me in the long run, because in January this year, I created my deviantART account. I was in need of something to fulfill me after the loss of my friends, and it seemed that making a DA was the the right thing. It combined social and artistic aspects, which was perfect for me. Now I have a fantastic, small little following on a profile where I just draw fun NiGHTS, Sonic, and Crash Bandicoot doodles. I’m really happy now.
LESSONS I’VE LEARNED:
1. Never let somebody tell me my character, unless I know them extremely well and vice versa. I know myself well enough, and shouldn’t think differently of myself just because somebody else does.
2. Along those same lines, always listen to my gut. Never let a whisper here or a quip there influence me when I have a deep gut feeling about something.
3. An error and a mistake are not the same things. An error is when I fall down, which all humans do because we’re imperfect creatures. A mistake is when I choose not to get up and learn from the error as a lesson. A lesson will also be repeated again and again until it is learned and I decide to pull myself off the ground and continue going.
4. True forgiveness does not mean “I accept what you caused to occur”, it is saying “I accept that it has happened, and I’m letting go of the past I thought I wanted. And I am willing to move and do something with what I learned.”
5. There are two different ways to say sorry. First, is when you say sorry but actually mean “please forget whatever I just did”. The second is genuine and is when you say sorry and mean “I apologize for the wrong that I did, and am willing to learn and move on from it.”
6. I cannot shut myself down in front of people. I can’t shut people out. If I do that, I lose out on a precious time that could be spent with other amazing people. Sometimes it can seem like investing will lead to heartbreak, but it won’t always be like that. I have to invest, but I won’t invest in more than I can afford to lose.
7. Sometimes it’s better to let myself be wrong and learn than to try to be correct and refuse to grow.
Alrighty! That’s all I could think of for this very long, personal post. I know I don’t talk about my personal life too much on social media, so I wanted to make this end-of-year recap for myself so I don’t forget the lessons I’ve learned along my journey. If you got something out of this.. yay! I’ve sorta accomplished my goal! I also understand if this was boring as hell to read. But it’s special to me and I don’t want to forget 2019. David of the future will thank me later.
Anyway.. here’s to an even better and more fantastic 2020! Goodbye 2010s, I forever love you. The majority of my life has happened in the 2010s, and I’ve made so many memories in this decade. From the growth and blooming of the internet and memes, to more real/raw things like personal self-growth. I’ve gained a lot and lost a lot, but in the end I’m thankful for it all. I hope everyone’s holiday season was amazing and I wish you a great upcoming New Years into the next decade! Talk to you next time, loves.
much love, bilobasideya 💜

Social Media Marketing Is a Joke
The best thing that ever happened to social media marketing was the hacking of the 2016 US election of Donal Trump by the Russians. Why? Because it laid bare what many in social media marketing has known for a long, long time: that social media platforms are a joke, their valuations are based on imaginary users, and their integrity lies somewhere between Lucifer and that guy who eats people's faces in the movies. For marketing consultants such as myself, recommending existing social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has been increasingly difficult, because -quite frankly- many of us don't trust the metrics. And why should we? Facebook doesn't.This is from Facebook's 2017 SEC filing (emphasis mine):The numbers for our key metrics, which include our daily active users (DAUs), monthly active users (MAUs), and average revenue per user (ARPU), are calculated using internal company data based on the activity of user accounts. While these numbers are based on what we believe to be reasonable estimates of our user base for the applicable period of measurement, there are inherent challenges in measuring usage of our products across large online and mobile populations around the world. The largest data management company in the world says it doesn't really know if its numbers are accurate. Estimates? What marketing professional wants estimated results after the fact?It gets worse. Emphasis mine:In the fourth quarter of 2017, we estimate that duplicate accounts may have represented approximately 10% of our worldwide MAUs. We believe the percentage of duplicate accounts is meaningfully higher in developing markets such as India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as compared to more developed markets. In the fourth quarter of 2017, we estimate that false accounts may have represented approximately 3-4% of our worldwide MAUs. Let that sink in. Facebook is admitting that "approximately" 10% of its monthly active users are fake. Interestingly, they don't mention what percentage of their daily active users are fake. And that's the problem with social media. You don't know what's real and what's fake anymore.Social media hasn't been real for a while. As marketers and advertisers, we pride ourselves on accuracy. In the olden times of marketing and advertising, we obsessed over rating numbers of tv shows, readership for print promotions, and delivery success rates for direct mail.In all cases, the platforms of the day were heavily audited. You knew, with fair certainty, was the audiences were for any particular medium or channel because there was usually a point of review somewhere for the numbers.Traditional media such as radio, TV, and print had been around long enough that there were thousands of case studies one could study the success or failures of individual campaigns. Because these mediums were part of the public record, it was easy to work backward to see what mix of media and budget worked and what didn't.As an industry, we could quickly establish benchmarks for success - not just based on our personal experiences- but in the collective experiences of very clear strategies laid bare for everyone to dissect.Well, that all went out the window with social media.Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram's numbers were always a joke.In days of yore, company valuation was based on revenues, assets, and human capital, and performance. That all changed when someone came up with the concept of "daily active users."The race to gain users became the driving force for social media platforms in a way that we've never seen before. Now, the obsession with user growth opened the door to advertising and marketing fraud on a scale that just wasn't possible previously.Let's get something clear: any platform that allows for people to create thousands of fake profiles so others can buy likes, followers, retweets, or shares is toxic to advertisers and brands alike. Now, I understand that the word "allows" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, so let me expand a bit what I mean.I don't think I'll get many arguments when I say that -regardless of what I think of them- the most successful social media platforms on the planet are also some of the most sophisticated technological enterprises on the planet. They have -arguably- some of the best AI around, as their entire business models revolve around being able to crunch numbers, facts, and obscure pieces of data millions of times a second. They are also massive corporations, with an army of lawyers and IP bulldogs waiting to protect their brand against any hostile outside forces. So explain to me, how is it, that even after all we have seen in the news people can still buy Facebook likes, or Twitter followers, or Instagram fans? The reason: it was always a scam. And we got conned along with everyone else.If your company is valued on your number of users and the activity of those users on your platform, what do you care if they are fake or not? If you did, you'd hire an armada of auditors to ensure the integrity of your userbase. I don't believe they ever did and will never do this.Social platforms deploy their honey trap.Initially, social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter lured brands and companies onto their platforms with promises of free marketing and advertising. The ability to quickly grow a fanbase and follower base, without the need of hiring marketing shmucks like me. Why waste time on hiring a professional when you can do it all yourself for nothing? At first, I was a supporter of this. I believed that marketing and advertising was often something that only larger companies could afford, and that small business marketing was being left behind. Social media marketing allowed for even a mom and pop shop to compete online. So many businesses spent countless hours and thousands of dollars in human resources to grow their followers online.Having lured them into their honey trap, social media companies then held followers and fans hostages. You had to pay to have access to the userbase that you built up and cultivated.Suddenly the numbers didn't make any sense. You had to pay to promote or boost posts when previously it was free. The result was disastrous for many businesses. The ROI's didn't add up, but with so many of their customers on these platforms, they had little choice but to continue to try and get whatever value they could for them. Moreover, the move to such promotions opened up the Pandora's box to further abuses. The drive for revenue seemingly caused social platforms to continue to look the other way on fake profiles and social media bots because they drove ad sales. Personal data was harvested and manipulated in ways that users could not fathom and did not agree to.Mostly, it did something to marketing that I'm not sure we can recover. For many digital marketing firms and marketing agencies, it forced us to down the Kool-aid with everyone else. People that should have known better doubled down on social media marketing for our clients when we knew -for most of them- it was unnecessary.Marketing and advertising agencies became accomplices after the fact.Like I said earlier, marketing and advertising agencies and consultants are supposed to obsess with accuracy. We want our clients to have the very best ROI available. However, like professionals in any business vertical, we're self-serving.One of my favourite examples of how people who would know better will say anything for a buck is real estate agents.Have you EVER heard a real estate agent tell you it's a wrong time to buy a house? In all of my days, I have never read an article by a real estate agent saying that people should hold off on a purchase. House prices going up? A great time to buy; you'll make your money back immediately! House prices going down? It's a buyers market! Lock in your savings now!Marketing and advertising professionals did something similar with social media marketing. We saw the platforms' rise in popularity and didn't want to get caught in a lurch. The buzz was building behind them, and clients were often demanding us to help them. So -even though Facebook and Twitter were mostly unproven with little to no actual case studies to speak of- many firms told their clients to throw money into the black hole of social. What was the result? The majority of social media campaigns are disasters. I only know of a fraction of companies that continue with any seriousness on social media compared to the rates companies did with traditional advertising or even SEO and non-social digital ads.You see it in the positioning. When digital marketers talk about social media, they discuss it regarding "reach," "exposure," "presence," "awareness." That's code word for "throw your money away." Do an online search of the effectiveness of social media, and you will find the results filled with SEO and social media marketers praising the platforms and the strategies.Real marketers talk about ROI. Impact on sales, and impact on lead generation. You can't pay the rent on brand awareness. I'm saying this as someone who builds brands for a living. And it's not just me saying this. One of the largest brands in the world, Proctor & Gamble, gutted their ad budget and walked away from a host of agencies because of digital advertising and marketing f more info https://www.digitaleagles.com.au/

The Artist vs Social Media
I have been sharing my feelings about art and its ever-growing relationship to social media with a number of people recently. I wrote a bit about it here some months ago, but that was primarily focused on reactions to different types of art I was posting on different platforms. Without a doubt, it’s been something that’s given me pause for a while, and I have a suspicion I can’t be the only person that feels this way.
To be clear: this is not meant to be an attack on the people who enjoy and excel at being a creative on social media. It is purely an expression of my own frustration, a cry out to others who have struggled with the same issues, because I know I’m not alone.
First of all, my personal style just doesn’t compliment a successful social media presence, I’m such a fan of the long-format, in general. I don’t want anything in my life to be bite-sized, cropped, or condensed. I struggle to convey the concepts teeming in my heart in a limited number of characters and pixels. As I am evolving as an artist, I enjoy incorporating many layers of meaning, drawing on a multitude of sources for inspiration. Social media, for the most part, wants to condense, compartmentalize, limit. It’s short-format, lacks fluidity, and promotes shorter attention spans. It feels counterintuitive to the kind of art I love and the art I want to be making.
For as streamlined and easy as social media has made sharing artwork with the great big world out there, it’s also birthed a lot of additional anxiety and despair. At least that’s been my experience. Some people have taken to social media like ducks to water, they are thriving in an endless stream of posts and pictures and stories. But this particular artmaker finds the rise of social media more like an impossible mountain, and climbing it is a requirement.
I envy the artists and makers who have figured out how to hack social media in order to promote their work and their brand. These people make it look easy, like social media integration with one’s art practice is as simple as breathing. I understand how it is crucial now as any kind of artist to have a big social media presence. But despite that understanding, I still have a lot of issues with it.
I was in art school in the still relatively early days of Instagram. Facebook and Twitter were big, but I didn’t really ever get too deeply involved in either platform. For me, Facebook was mostly for staying in touch with friends and family back home. I didn’t even have a smart phone until some time after I graduated. The school I attended encouraged us to build a website, get a business card, but there was no way to prepare us for the expansion of these apps among others that would emerge later on. This is not a sorry attempt at an excuse for my complicated relationship with social media, because there are a lot of artists in their early 30s right now who are very clearly doing well in that arena.
Circa 2009 – 2011, using social media for networking was beginning to be a real thing to consider. Having a Facebook page and separate Instagram and Twitter accounts devoted to your craft in addition to your website and blog in order to reach all possible professional connections was increasingly important. And now, they are all absolutely essential. People think you must be kidding yourself if you’re making art and don’t have a social media presence. I’ve caught myself being judgmental of young artists who aren’t on social media. But then I’m reminded of my own issues with Facebook and Instagram and all the others and I think maybe I should shut my mouth.
That’s the background. The real thing I’m trying to say is this:
Social media is exhausting.
I hate it.
For all the good content being generated and shared on FB, IG, etc there are a thousand mentally and emotionally draining posts being shared by people who, by and large, aren’t on social media to promote their craft. And that’s fine, people should have a place to vent their frustrations, laugh at funny or un-funny memes, share recipes and cute animal videos, get 100+ validating reactions to their photos, post thoughts/criticisms/ideas too long for Twitter but too short for a blog…
But to expect an artist generating original content to compete with everything else being blasted on every social media platform is complete and utter unrealistic nonsense.
My big, huge, major beef with social media is the totally insane decision to stop having posts featured in chronological order on pretty much every major platform. This really hurts creative people who are trying to get exposure, share their work to the world (or at least their friends and followers), and requires them to generate even more content, or share the same post over and over again in the hopes that their painting or photo or video somehow makes it over all the other posts from everybody else that are only just so much noise. Trying to get noticed or share your work with likeminded creatives you don’t already know is like shouting in a canyon full of other people shouting, drowned out by all the other voices and the echoes of the voices.
But that’s not the only thing about social media that keeps me up at night.
There are people on social media who have become experts in making their lives look like perfect, magical journeys of self discovery and growth and good fortune. Seeing their perfectly composed, perfectly lit photos of what is supposedly their daily lives, their brunches, their cocktails, their pets, their clothes, their travels, their significant others, and whatever else makes me want to not even try. Why should I even bother to try to compete with that? Looking at those kinds of posts immediately makes me feel inferior because 1) I’m not living that theoretically beautiful, charmed life, and 2) I’m not generating masses of content like that of my own experience. I look at my weird little life and there’s hardly anything photo- or post-worthy, at least not on a daily basis, not enough to get above everyone else’s noise. When did having a social media presence become an art form in and of itself? One of my very close friends described social media as performance art, which is probably the best description of this phenomenon I’ve ever heard. I’m not saying it’s not hard work — in order to project this perfect life, you have to be a photographer, or at least know and/or have the money to pay for one, be a master of self-marketing, and you have to set aside the time in your day to make the posts (more on that in a bit). But as someone with at least half a brain, I know that the content being gobbled up by glowing, supportive friends and followers is only a version of reality.
I know I’m not the only one who feels utterly alienated by the “perfect lives” being presented on social media, and I know that it’s not most people’s intention to alienate their friends by posting gorgeous photographs and positive affirmations of their own journeys.
And yet, even just thinking about it is exhausting. It’s a destructive and deadly combination of self-loathing and self-doubt inspired by the vast majority of what I see on Facebook and Instagram with knowing full well that those feelings are totally unfounded since the posts are not a true reflection of reality. It doesn’t motivate me, it doesn’t inspire me to follow their lead, it doesn’t get my blood pumping. It just makes me tired.
By my nature, I am a relatively private person. I have no real desire to share my private life with strangers, and it’s a struggle for me to open up to acquaintances. I have a hard time talking about myself, my dreams and aspirations, my needs and wants with other people. I keep to myself, I have a small circle of close friends and family with whom I share things openly.
There’s nothing like the gut-wrenching feeling you get when you’re talking passionately about your art or your interests or your hopes for the future with someone and seeing the very moment their eyes glaze over with disinterest. It’s a special kind of soul-crushing dismissal that has lead me to live an introvert’s life. Because why, after all, would I share anything with people when that’s the reaction I often got in my youth when sharing with my peers?
The whole grand purpose of social media is to share. Share everything and share often. Artists who hold regular jobs and don’t have an abundance of free time or energy to devote to generating social media content on top of the art they’re already making need to find that magical balance. The Buzzfeed article about burnout that was circulating a few months ago touches on this a bit. Work + Art + Self Promotion. That’s always been the case for artists looking to make a profit off their work, but now it’s on a whole other level and puts creatives in direct competition with social media influencers and everyone else on FB, IG, Twitter, Tumblr, Snapchat, etc. When I say time and energy, I mean the lack of energy I personally have after a working a job that already requires me to use my creativity, strategy, and organizational skills. When I get home or when I finish a job, I want to recharge so I can have the energy and motivation to actually sit in my studio and make new art. I struggle with budgeting out my time and energy for taking photos, writing cute little descriptions, thinking up clever hashtags, and setting timers to remind me when to post in order to get the most views.
I’m over-focused right now on making the art, in finding my voice as an illustrator, in re-vamping my portfolio and considering the future of my practice. I would need a personal assistant to run my social media accounts in an effective and professional way, and I don’t understand how other artists don’t have assistants. Or maybe they do. At the very least it would require me to have my phone in my hand far more than I already do, so another reason to keep it on me, especially in my studio while I’m in the zone, working, makes me feel gross.
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “But Emma… you took all this time to write and edit this long blog post. Surely you could have used that time to work on content for your IG or FB accounts.” And you would be right. However, I’m in a place mentally and emotionally where I see the social media game, I understand it, but I just don’t want to play it. Not the way we’re all expected to if we want to get noticed. I’m not a performance artist, I’m not extroverted enough, my process doesn’t lend itself to this new gold standard of being an artist in the 21st century. Am I making big strides to change my process? Not really, because the very nature of social media feels inauthentic to me and the work I want to be making.
In the end… I don’t really know how to make social media work for me and my own journey as an artist. It would be great if there was some compromise, some middle path for people like me who are rubbed the wrong way by hashtags and stories and filters. Is there even a possibility for existing any other way as an artist today? Because everyone I know who creates any kind of art seems to have accepted and figured out the key to doing well on social media. It’s almost not even worth airing my grievances since I’m not willing to completely change and conform to something that does not feel right to me.
I’ll just keep plugging along as I have been until I figure it out. Or some kind souls who have been through a similar conundrum swoop in and offer their wisdom and insight.

Virtual Social Media Influencers: a peak into a bizarre future in advertising - Ileana Villalobos
Tumblr media
Lil Miquela: virtual AI humanoid and social media influencer.
In the past couple of years, the rise of social media influencers has skyrocketed. Companies in all sorts of industries (from video-games, beauty, and sports, to pets, tools, and cars) have been investing heavily in the marketing and advertising of their products that go beyond just billboard or magazine ads and television commercials.
A recent study from the Association of National Advertisers found that 75 percent of companies use influencer marketing. Not only that, but a study on the market of social media influencer growth done by Linqia has indicated that 39 percent of marketers are planning to increase their influencer marketing budget in 2018 and up to 66 percent for luxury brands. The success of social media websites such as Instagram, a platform that launched less than seven years ago and has about 500 million active users per month, with 4,200 million daily likes and 95 million photos videos uploaded daily, is fueling both the influencer phenomenon and the fees that influencers are now charging.
While this influencer phenomenon may seem new (and even bizarre), companies of all sizes and budgets are reaching out to people on social media to promote products to their audiences. Even people with a seemingly small amount of followers (relative to most popular influencers who boast millions) can receive an “ask” from a small company, and make an impression on their social media accounts not only gain more followers and a pocket of income, but to potentially gain the attraction of other companies who may want to work with them, thus growing their “influence” base. The new system of advertising by way of influencers has become so commonplace, that more companies are reaching out to lesser-known, “normal” people, rather than celebrities.
In fact, the demand for social media influencers is growing so rapidly, that companies are already starting to create their own influencers. Yes, you read that correctly. A China-based “influencer incubator” company called Ruhnn, for example, grooms bloggers to work in e-commerce. Another company called Devumi, sells Twitter followers and retweets anyone aspiring to achieve influencer-levels of popularity. On the more extreme end, a Los Angeles-based robotics company called Brud created a CGI humaniod named Lil Miquela, a “Brazilian-American” artist, model, and influencer. Since her virtual “birth” in 2016, Lil Miquela has garnered over 1 million followers on Instagram, dons real clothing (ranging from street-wear to high-end luxury clothing brands like Prada and Chanel) and has released two singles which have over 4 million streams on Spotify.
Lil Miquela’s success has drawn in many investors looking to create more virtual influencers that will hopefully follow in her nonexistent footsteps; Brud is now worth over a whopping $125 million. The investors backing Brud and other robotics companies (such as Sequoia Capital, Box Group, and SV Angel) say that CGI influencing is the rise of a new advertising process that is removed from the personalities and scandals that have defined a generation of Vine, YouTube and Instagram influencers, which is why it has become an attractive investment pursuit.
Tumblr media
Jake and Logan Paul: two controversial brothers who rose to fame on the now-defunct Vine and have since made videos on YouTube and Facebook.
But of course, even AI influencers cannot go without scandal. In April of 2018 Lil Miquela’s Instagram account was hacked by another CGI model, an alt-right, Trump-supporter named Bermuda who posted a selfie on Lil Miquela’s Instagram account, stating ““Soooo... you’re being lied to by a fake a** person. Literally who is buying this for one second? Apparently a lot of you. …Sorry, Miquela. I tried to DM, I tried to call but you ‘stay curving’ me. You brought this on yourself, girl 😘 Leave me a comment if you care about the truth, k? 😘 Go follow @bermudaisbae.”
Tumblr media
@bermudaisbae is an alt-right white-supremacist CGI robot and social media influencer.
Creepy.
It is uncertain whether her account had really been hacked by Bermuda or if it was all planned, but an investor who has worked with them before claims that Brud was “using conflict to introduce new characters… same as the Kardashians always have,” a familiar PR stunt that is often used by celebrities and other influential people and companies to divert (or in this case attract) attention.
Despite the increasing popularity of virtual influencers, human influencers are still in high-demand, and are continuing to receive brand deals and sponsorships from companies that are more than willing to pay up.
