MDZS Rec List 1: Canon-ish Wangxian

So, several years ago I started a rec list for a friend I dragged into MDZS. More recently I’ve seen some folks wishing to read fics that pre-date a lot of the current fandom trends. Since I stopped updating the rec list in like... early 2020? most everything here is from that before time. I hope y’all can enjoy some of the old classics, and maybe find new fics you haven’t had a chance to read. Note 2: I am aware that not all the links work, this fandom has a terrifyingly high turnover rate of popular authors due to assholes who have harassed folks. X'chol - (( Ex-sh-Ho-l' )), or "Shoal". "The Captain", Commanding Officer, of a Narthanax crew. Diplomatic, known for his bravery, diplomacy, and generosity. He is respected by all those under him. Larger than most males, and as such is sometimes mistaken for a female; it doesn't bother him. (extended bio) Perrhl - (( PURR-H[ull] )), or "Pearl". Commander. Chief Security/Tactical. "The Fighter." Easily the largest of the main three (all females are larger, but especially in her case), and most physically capable as well as physically imposing. She is still Narthanax, and so, curious by nature above all else, but has the tendency to be blunt, and does not employ diplomacy where necessary at times. (extended bio) Vaahl - (( V- Ah- L )), or "Val". Lieutenant & Medical, science officer. "The Diplomat." Smallest, youngest of the main three, but accomplished. A prodigy. x SPECIES X67: an otherwise unknown species of frightening, but intelligent aliens. No contact has been made between humankind and themselves, and they prefer to keep it that way. Any interactions that have been had in the past centuries have been one-sided, and accidental. They cannot be considered xenophobic as they have never been documented extensively enough, and as they seem to prefer to flee rather than fight. They stand upright at a general height of 5'10, and almost always wear a metallic cap that covers the entirety of their skull except their mouth, which is equipped with large, sharp teeth that pack a nasty bite. Also have spines on their joints that can pack a lethal venomous sting. (visuals) {THEMES: Incomprehensible life, Isolationism, Mutual terror, The act of earning trust.}

One - a single individual of the species that has been encountered, and non-hostile. It (any pronouns) has expressed fear of other humanoids, and a need to stay away. She is aware of how dangerous her kind is, but assures that it is not intentional. They are fear-driven, like creatures of prey that prefer to hide and live simply. They have agreed to a physical exam to help others understand her kind better, at the price that she be released immediately afterwards and that her kind never be sought after again. (extended bio)

Two (canonically deceased) - an individual of the species that has been only briefly encountered. Larger than One, more imposing, but intelligent. If not a bit belligerent. Tests run on the individual post-mortem. With no way of returning their remains to their people, they keep his body in cryo-stasis for the meantime. This entity may be referenced in threads. He was not a kind entity.

x SPECIES Y894: large and mostly humanoid in shape. They are apex predators, standing at about 7'5" tall at an estimate, with two additional limbs that attach from their back that resemble elongated arms with massive claws. The only documented case of interaction between these aliens and humankind come from what remains of a small town of religious folk-- their personal writings. They thought it was a monster, but were assured that it was in fact, an angel of the lord. (visuals) {THEMES: The Abused Mind, Hate, Apex Predators, Xenophobia, Danger. }

"THE ANGEL" (Xm'octhlu) - An individual from an isolationist species of space-faring apex predators from a far-away galaxy. Xm'octhlu was sent adrift and injured after an encounter, and ended up on earth, where humans (zealot 'scientists') ran experiments and brainwashed her into believing it was a genuine angel from human religious text. They were none too pleased when they recovered their memories. Documented evidence of the encounter has been put under lock and key, due to the particularly gruesome nature of it. Despite all of this, Xm'octhlu is not an unreasonable entity... it displayed intelligence and tact. Despite the confusion and potential concussive nature of their injuries. An ancient mind, possibly the very first artificial intelligence and by far the largest, most expansive one in existence. It is simply known as "The Mind", or "The Mother of AI", not in a maternal sense.... but in reference to it's sheer power and size; unfathomable to the human mind. No one knows where it came from, nor who built it-- if anyone did. Or if it even is truly an AI, or merely an ancient lifeform that has always existed and lost it's sense of self. It is both inorganic and energy based. It's thought that in time, The Mind simply evolved beyond it's need for a corporeal form or substance, and simply took to the cosmos in form of pure energy. Some think that perhaps it spans the entire cosmos, and it will tell you as much.

It was unaware it was doing it at first, still so "groggy" from being dormant for so long - in a state of pure energy, communication unnecessary. At first, the androids were developing consciousness, but in time something started happening to the androids... AI started acting strangely. People started whispering of angels and of gods, but in the end.... when all was said and done, it was discovered that it was something else entirely. Something completely alien and so big that humans couldn't completely understand it. It is powerful and expansive enough that it reaches through all of time and space, all at once, all of the time (now that it is awake once more and aware of its surroundings and... the little details... Like Life.) It is an anomaly, and was and still is truly feared by human kind in the future... but it keeps to itself now. Once more merely watching in curiosity of these little creatures. It is powerful enough to overtake all of humanity, but it was confused when humankind expressed these fears.... it didn't want that. It just wanted to learn.

His school years and adolescence proved particularly challenging, given his more.... heavy-handed tendencies and behaviours. But all in all, they raised a fine young man. He lives on Deep Space Nine, a Bajoran space station and makes a living doing what he loves... selling plants. Flowers, primarily. Which many people find both amusing and uncomfortable. He doesn't care how it makes other people feel, if negatively, and he has no problem letting those holding prejudice know this. "Huds", or "Hutz" has his moments, but is overall a kind and generous soul. He often tucks himself away if he is made aware that other Nausicaan's are aboard, as they often seek him out with violent or malicious intent, treating him as though he is a disgrace for having no title, no power, and living how he does. He is seen as weak by his own race... but he doesn't let it bother him too much. He just wants to live in peace.

Sokka's instincts had screamed at him ever since Jet showed his smarmy, smug, wheat chewing face, but without evidence he couldn't convince Katara and Aang to listen to him. Honestly, as time went on and he couldn't find anything to support his unease he started to doubt it himself.

Then Jet let him in on the Freedom Fighter's biggest secret.

Sokka should have known better than to ignore his instincts.

Divided Instincts

The last thing Zuko wants after years of being stuck in that cave is to see any more rocks. Unfortunately, he hadn't had luck since the day he's been born so here they were, staring at world's largest canyon.

Oh well, at least they're flying over it and he won't actually be surrounded by rock walls, right?

...right?

Instincts to Guide in the Storm

Maybe it's the possible impending doom.

Maybe it's the novelty of having someone to tell who might care.

Maybe it's just that kind of storm. The one that makes you want to curl up around a fire to tell stories, and he and Sokka aren't exempt from that even on a perilous ship.

Regardless of the reason, Zuko begins to tell the story that the Freedom Fighters never bothered to even ask about.

A Spirit’s Instincts

Aang should be the one taking care of a sick Katara and Sokka, not Zuko, but the airbender insisted that he be the one to find the medicine.

Now it's been hours, and Zuko is painfully aware that there is a Fire Nation Stronghold nearby that he hadn't been able to warn Aang about.

When the lights of Pohuai light up in victory, he knows without having to be told that Aang has been captured.

Now Zuko has a decision to make.

Could he allow his maybe-friend to be captured by the Fire Nation?

Or was he ready to be the traitor his father had branded him as.

A Fortune Teller’s Instincts

Zuko may be free from Jet, but he is struggling to earn the full trust of the Gaang.

More than that, he isn't sure what do do with his life now that he is no longer crown prince and is no longer facing a life in chains. He used to know his destiny, now he has no clue where his life should go.

Maybe the famous Aunt Wu will be able to help.

Bato’s Instincts

Katara still hates him.

Sokka is following some Water-Tribe-Father-Figure around with stars in his eyes.

Aang is pouting because his friends are paying more attention to the Water-Tribe-Father-Figure than him.

Oh, and there is a Water-Tribe-Father-Figure now. And Zuko has a wonderful track record with Fathers.

Overall, this is a /great/ time to be Zuko.

A Deserter’s Instincts

Part of the Instinctual Verse, please read that first.

It had been weeks since Sokka had freed Zuko from Jet's clutches, and Zuko... he still can't make a spark. He's spent every available moment in the sun, and while his chi is growing stronger, he can do no more than manipulate an existing flame. He's trying not to let on how... concerned he is, but since Sokka maintains that he's a 'terrible liar', he doesn't think it's particularly effective.

He knows that going to the Fire Days festival was probably a bad idea, after all there is a whole wall of wanted posters featuring them right outside the city wall. But honestly, if Zuko never made a bad decision, he'd never do anything, and he wants a taste of home so badly.

What's the worse that could happen?

The Instinct’s of the Airwalkers

Zuko wasn't sure what to think about the tales of modern day figures living and flying in the Northen Air Temple. His people are... thorough. He doesn't want to let Aang down, but he finds it hard to believe that anyone not stuck in an iceberg had escaped the eradication.

When he got to the temple, he hated being proven right. What's more, he hated seeing Earth Kingdom strangers destroying what little of Aang's heritage survived the attack of his people. But the day that the Fire Nation launches a second attack on this once idyllic temple, Zuko hates the most that he has to finally make a clear choice.

He'd thought he'd made this choice already, thought he'd made it several times over, but the question remains when he'd least like it to: Is he willing to fight against his Nation?

Cold Hard Instincts

Part of the Instinctual Verse, please read those first!

Zuko is glad that he had started getting his bending back before they hit the frigid North Pole, but it turns out that the Northern Water Tribe doesn't feel the same way.

They hadn't even gotten close to the city yet and he was half frozen in a block of ice, freezing and bound as his captors ignore Katara, Aang, and Sokka's protests. He really should have known something like this would happen, but as usual he'd underestimated his luck and now he had to come up with a way to convince the Northern Chief to allow a firebender to walk free in his village.

He HAD to, because he wasn't going to let himself become a prisoner. Not again.

The Instincts of the Sun Warriors

Zuko... may have been hasty, when he got on that raft instead of finding his friends and at least seeing if he needed to pull this disappearing act. It was day three of sitting of a raft in the middle of the ocean though, and a little too late for him to do anything about his regrets.

He had other stuff he could focus on, like perfecting the Dancing Dragon and trying to figure out why Uncle was steering them to the northern tip of the Fire Nation.

Meanwhile, the Gaang have left the North Pole and are on their way to pick up Bumi and round out the gaang, they just had to stop and talk to the General Fong guy first. This shouldn't lead to any complications, right?

The Instincts of Healers and Nomads

Zuko is, surprise surprise, on the run once again. At least this time he has Uncle, someone to watch his back and someone he can trust to know absolutely everything about his past, his identity.

Now he just has to find his friends before they do something stupid.

He isn't holding his breath.

Especially since apparently, Uncle is no better than him at identifying what plants are good to make tea out of, and which ones are poison.

Instincts in Omashu (not Bumi’s instincts)

Being on the run is bad enough, but at least they have an Ostrich Horse now. Unfortunately, that doesn't help them make money, and Zuko has to endure begging with Uncle on the streets and put up with jerks who swing swords at (seemingly) defenseless old men.

Or does he?

Meanwhile, the Gaang is braving a very different Omashu than they remember. Aang is faced with the realization that his last old friend had fallen to the Fire Nation, just like everyone else he had remembered. He does have new friends now though, and new promises. He told Zuko that he would remember that the Fire Nation soldiers were people too, and as much as he didn't want to, this was a good place to start.

Zuko’s Instincts

Zuko and the Gaang are separated.

Yes, Zuko knows that it's his fault. Now though, he is travelling with Uncle throughout the Earth Kingdom to find them, all while trying to avoid the sister hunting him down. The way is treacherous and littered with friends and enemies alike. The hot headed teen is faced time and time again with danger, both natural and born of his own making.

At least he isn't alone.

The Instincts of the Chased

Katara thought that Zuko was one of the most stubborn, heard headed people she'd ever meet.

Enter Toph Beifong.

Meanwhile Iroh is trying to figure out how to approach his nephew about his habit of running off alone, which would be easier to do if the younger firebender hadn't run off alone the instant he saw a bit of bison fur.

Fics That Changed Me Fundamentally

It’s been part of my life for almost a decade now, I made friends through LM that I still have to this day, and it genuinely changed me as a person. I’m not usually into End!verse, it sounded so bleak from the summary, and it sounded so long for something I wasn’t sure about. If you’re reading this and nodding along? You are as much a fool as I was. Yes, it’s the end of the world. But it’s not over yet. This is a beautiful journey in what it means to be yourself, how to survive the end of the world, a How-To for Coups, and a study in food as a love language. I only read this fic this year, but like LM, it has genuinely changed me. Map of the World has been podficced.

Did someone say kid!fic in canonverse? This is perfect. Canon divergence from the end of S6. Cas saves a baby from a neglectful mother and gives him to Dean to raise. They all move in with Bobby. Great OCs. Bobby considers Cas his son. Listen everything I say here will not be able to begin to encompass how much I love this fic. Just trust me on this one.

With a summary like that, need I say more? No but I'm gonna. This is one of the funniest fics I've ever read, but it doesn't take any emotion from the serious moments, if anything it heightens them. There are so many quotes from this I think about all the time. It was written in 2010 and so there's a bit of misogyny/character assassination of Anna in places.

"Dude, I can't do this whole thing by myself," Dean said with far more desperation leaking into his tone than he liked. It would just be too much to make it through hell and death and Lucifer only to have Castiel bail on him because of a frigging baby.

They beat the Apocalypse (OG-S5) and then Sam gets de-aged by a spell. I've listened to this so many times I know it by heart, it's an ultimate comfort fic to me.

Defy Any and All Expectation* by Tenoko1 (read by Tenoko1) M | 138k (14hrs) | 37k hits

Chuck's newly released books tell of another war between Heaven and Hell. Team Free Will sets out to try to defy prophecy, only to realize there is a lot more at stake and amiss than the not-quite-accurate words of one Prophet of the Lord. Along the way, Dean and Cas' relationship continues to evolve into something neither expected or were prepared for, all of their lives transforming in ways no one could have expected. But with no shortage of cases, monsters, and mayhem, it's going to require the help of new friends and old enemies if they're to have a hope of saving the world one more time. Alternate Season Six.

So this is a re-written version of Tenoko1's The Path We Choose which I don't think is around anymore. By the time I was reading the re-write as each chapter came out, I knew every single line of TPWC and it wasn't all that much shorter. It's such a perfect canon divergence because they are all 100% in-character. If you're into podfic, you already know what an absolute gift 14 hours is, but if you have never tried podfic before, Tenoko1 is a fantastic place to start. Her voice is soothing and energetic and her Cas sometimes comes to mind when I'm reading fic in Misha's place (sorry Misha)

His Fucking Kids 'Verse by 8sword M | 96k(Series)/ 3k (first part) | 26k hits (first part)

Jesus, the school should just have a parking spot labeled, “Reserved for the Novak-Winchesters,” because Dean’s getting sick of having to cruise around the parking lot looking for a spot every time he gets a call from the principal about Emma.

Emma survives and Dean and Cas are raising her and Claire. This fic series will make you laugh, make you cry, and (nowadays) make you wish Emma had survived to be a part of Wayward Sisters.

One Species Too Many by wallmakerrelict E | 22k | 37k hits

While Dean is laid up for a month after breaking his leg on a hunt, Cas decides that it's a perfect time to adopt a litter of kittens. But even though he's gotten better since Purgatory, Cas still isn't quite the same as he was before fixing Sam's head, and being trapped in a cabin with him for weeks on end is making that all the more obvious to Dean. When Sam takes off on a hunt, Dean has to figure out on his own how to navigate his new relationship with Cas while also helping to raise a bunch of fuzzballs that aren't even cute. Not even a little bit. (Well, maybe a little bit.)

Dean breaks his legs, and honey!Cas brings home some kittens to foster. It's achingly sweet and also painful because you know Dean wants to fix Cas but there's nothing to fix. It is tagged for ableism for this.

Tripping* by Hatteress E | 49k | 78k hits

That time the universe decided Dean belonged with Cas and wasn't afraid to pull out the big guns to make it so. Big guns in this case being obsessive fangirls, archangels turned tricksters and overly enthusiastic cupids. Welcome to Dean's life.

Alt!S5 and it is beautiful. Also any fic with Missouri is an automatic win.

Broadway Musical by Grifitings M | 12k | 79k hits

This is the day that marked the Holy and Blessed Union of Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle. The merging of prominent bloodlines is always a grand occurrence, but breeding pedigree hunter families like Winchester and Harvelle is something to be rejoiced. It is also something to be meticulously planned, which thankfully the Host is very good at. Or, the romantic comedy where Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle are destined to get married, Castiel is given the task of playing matchmaker and fails terribly, the entire Heavenly Host becomes a sitcom audience, God warns against male pregnancy, and Jimmy Novak is incredibly unimpressed with angels in general.

Jimmy deserves a sainthood and frankly I don't even want to hear about crack if it's not on the level of the Host yelling at Cas not to touch the butt.

Classic AUs (AKA AUs from my first time around)

Dean Winchester teaches a third-grade class. This was one of the first spn fics to really really stay with me and it never really left.

Ellen and Jo Harvelle run Harvelle's Roadhouse, a bar that unintentionally becomes a beacon for wayward queer souls. Her employees: Dean, the smartass runaway with a big heart and bigger mouth; Castiel, the college drop-out turned hippie; his (surprisingly heterosexual) trouble-making brother Gabriel; and Charlie, who has been told several times that the back room is not to be used for after-hours Dungeons & Dragons games. But there's a lot of love in this place, and a new family for anyone who may otherwise be without.

This series. If you've ever felt unsure or out of place or anxious or just really felt like no-one understood you, this fic is for you. I first found this series when I was coming to terms with my queerness and I genuinely think it was invaluable. Also I am a sucker for the go for a dinner at Cas's family and end up storming out trope.

Play It All Night Long by janie_tangerine (read by Tenoko1) NC17 | 43k (4hrs)

The rom-com-ish one where Dean hosts a late night radio show, Castiel is a regular listener of his who starts calling one day and ends up calling more often than not and Dean finds himself liking it. This, until one day Castiel calls for not exactly petty reasons (just before Dean's brother Sam is visiting with his girlfriend for spring break) and things get very, very crowdy at his place. He also doesn't know it's just the beginning of it. Also features Gabriel, Chuck, Andy, the Roadhouse crew and a huge amount of music quoted. Especially Bob Dylan.

Again, this podfic has got me through many a night of insomnia. Cas calls in after a particularly shitty day and it all goes from there.

There is a reason you will see this recced time and time again. It healed parts of me I didn't know needed healing.

Await further instructions.’ Castiel doesn’t mind working security duty; he was briefed shortly after the initial salvation of the Sword from the pit, and again before taking up his position. Time moves differently there, the space ever-changing to make a prison of mountains, cathedrals, salt flats, orchards, and whatever Castiel was led to believe about Heaven’s greatest weapon—Dean Winchester is something entirely unexpected

I saw ssts mentioned in like every single If you're getting back into the fandom READ THIS rec list. For good reason. It's described as "canon-adjacent in that seasons one to three happened exactly the same, but when Dean goes to Hell, he is not raised by Castiel". It's one of the most interesting concepts I've read and it's one of those fics where the writing style will stick with you. Castiel POV in a way you've never read before.

It settles into the pit of his stomach, curling hot and tight like something he instinctively wants to tear out with his bare hands. He takes a breath, and it gets stuck in his throat, hitching there. It hurts, hurts, hurts when he finally exhales. "Yeah," Dean says, "of course you do," and he nods jerkily as he looks down at his phone. He doesn't say goodbye. He doesn't look up from the screen when Cas gets up and leaves the room. He doesn't finish his coffee, or move for a long time. By nightfall, Cas is gone.

If you don't already know sobsicles, I am delighted to introduce you to the person who will smash you to pieces with a hammer to put you back together Kintsugi-style. This one is post-finale but without 15x18 (it'll make sense as it goes). Cas says he's going to leave again and again Dean doesn't ask him to stay. Full of lines so beautiful they'd make Shakespeare weep, Sobsicles has this way of writing that is so evocative and paints such a clear picture. Fair warning, if you're Dean-coded, this might be A Lot.

Yes, two sobsicles recs back to back. This one I read first and it still holds such a special place in my heart. A sign of a good fic is being able to picture it perfectly. The sign of an amazing fic is that when reading this I was so in Dean's shoes I could feel a pool cue between my hands and Baby behind my back. And I sobbed like a baby in this. It has probably my favourite ending ever. It's genuinely beautiful. If you don't read another on this list, read this one.

In a world where the supernatural live more or less in peace with the rest of humanity, it’s a little impolite to ask Cas just what he really is - or what his dark past entails.

A fantastic magical realism fic - magical creatures live and work with humans. Gabe and Cas run a coffee shop, Dean is a fireman, and the burn is slow and delicious and the intrigue kept me reading for like a week every single spare minute.

Author Castiel Novak has finally hit the big time, with a book based on his failed college relationship with a brilliant painter. He's put all his pain behind him, but at a book signing, he comes face to face with Dean Winchester for the first time in twelve years, and the reunion doesn't go like Cas hoped. Dean's a broken man, with a lot of scars and secrets, shoulders weighed down by his demons and self loathing. Cas sees a second chance with the man he's never stopped loving, but Dean's moved on, and is about to get married. Sam launches a "brilliant" plan to reunite his brother and his best friend, but Cas is worried it will all blow up in their faces, and he'll go through the agony of losing Dean a second time.

The first part of this I actually saved back when I was first in the fandom but I never got around to reading it (I had a To Read folder of 100+ fics that I absolutely dove into when I got back into spn) and the rest of the series finished in 2016 so I'm counting it in this section not the other. On the one hand, I wish I'd read this when it first came out. It's beautiful and heartbreaking, and so visual. On the other hand, I think I appreciated it a lot more now than I would have seven years ago. The parallel of me coming back to the old fandom that I loved dearly with Cas coming back to see someone and places he loved so much really hit. (Although coming back to the spn fandom was much easier and much less heartbreak!)

She's very aware that it can get complicated, and that it can be a huge source of pain for someone, but Dean sounds grievously wronged, somehow, as if it's a truly personal thing. She pushes through, focusing back on her job, clearing her throat before murmuring, "Well, I guess we all want angels to visit us sometimes." "Just the one," Dean mumbles. "Your guardian angel?" Mitzi asks. Dean breathes out, "Something like that. As close to one as an angel will ever get."

Therapy through getting tattoos and telling your life story to someone who obviously doesn't think it's real. Outsider!POV not just done well, but done literally the best.

When I first read this, it had me completely transfixed. I could not stop reading. It was so raw and so full of emotion. I was then lucky enough to get TheDragon in our exchange, so I did a podfic for it and it's probably the most proud I've been of one.

He shares rooms with his best mate, a philosophy student, spends too much time with a flirty guy who has a thing for poets, goes boxing with a guy in a red vest, wants to punch the wet sop who drools on the blonde waitress and is getting tired of this guy who keep breaking his laptops through sheer dumb luck. Thank god the hypochondriac's there to keep an (slightly too) attentive eye on their stress levels. The revolutionary thinks the graffiti artist's work is a waste of space. The artist thinks the revolutionary's campaigns are a waste of time. And all the while, the poet and the flirt drool over each other in the background...

This is perfect and it's funny and it's beautiful and it rips my heart out multiple times.

It's nothing I would have usually read (canon era, not e/R, MCD) but I am so glad I gave it a go. It's a study on what if Combeferre had survived the barricades too and the guilt. This stayed with me for days afterwards until I eventually messaged kjack89 to get permission to podfic it.

Note: Going by the wiki timeline, Aerith would be 16yo and Sephiroth 20yo (soon to turn 21) in this thread. This thread is just to explore getting acquainted and interactions will be kept accordingly appropriate for the settings. If you’d like some changes such as canon age divergence let me know through IMs and I’ll promptly edit!

So this was the place, if his sources were to be believed.

And he would believe them, everything considered. The location was nothing less of extraordinary considered its surroundings. Who’d have thought that deep within the bowels of the underplate existed a small corner of paradise?

For a few long moments, reptilian dark slits trailed along the height of the waterfall that rumbled in the far back of the open area. A large gaping aqueduct was freely dumping gallons upon gallons into a crystal clear pool inside which several rocky outcrops opened like small isles in a lake, coated in so many flowers, the kinds of which he’d seen only in pictures of biology books. More flowers Sephiroth thought could possibly exist within all of Midgar.

On the largest one, stood a house. The house he’d been looking for.

Whispers and gasps reached his ears against the crashing sound of water. He didn’t need to turn his head to know that behind him, where the dirt path narrowed to lead back towards the rest of the slums, several children were hiding and spying on him. His passage through Sector 5 hadn’t gone unnoticed, he even had to stop and ask for directions at one point.

To be sure this was the person he wanted to meet.

Leather boots pressed firm and calm on the small bridge that separated him from the three-story house. Such a graceful looking building, in contrast to the hovels that he’d walked past. This place was well-maintained and, to a degree, almost a luxury. Suspiciously so, he mused.

The SOLDIER stopped on the porch, eyes shifting with expressionless curiosity to the windows. There were no lights coming through, but it wasn’t late enough for that either. The light of the sun lamp above them still reached the green grass and caressed the roof over his head. It was also possible that nobody was home at this moment.

But he had to remember his purpose. For the time being, force was unneeded. Lifting a gloved hand free of his weapon -- the blade was at rest in its leather harness that held it strapped behind his back at an angle -- he turned it to the backside to give a couple slow knocks on the door.

CoV Fanon Clans/World-Building

This is specifically for the canon-divergent setting of my longfic “Quiver of Cobras”. In order to give more life and conflict to the political plots, I have been compiling a list of the CoV clans and an overview of their cultures and conflicts.

There are six or seven more clans who have yet to be created; these are the ones I’ve made so far.

Cave Spiders: Chief is Vido Stonefang, Chief of Security for the Twin Gods. Small but powerful clan that controls the network of caverns and abandoned mines that lie beneath Pandora. Trade in rare minerals, plants, metals, and the poison obtained from subterranean animals. Gifted hand to hand combatants, but specialize in sneak attacks and guerilla warfare. When forced to use guns, favor pistols. Are well-versed in safely mining Eridium. Most are albino and at least partially blind. Clan began as a result of abnormally high rates of albinism on Pandora. Superstition demanded that they be driven from communities and cast out as babies. The expelled fled underground and formed the clan. Allied with Star Biters, Terrorbytes, and Bomb Squad (formerly). TYREEN'S HONORARY CLAN.

Star Biters: Chief is Reeves. Mountain clan, controlling the highest peaks on Pandora. Astronomers, mountaineers, and meteorologists. Trade in star maps, navigation assistance, and safe passage across the mountains. Charted the path of the Calypsos' crashing ship, and the Twins as they bailed out but crashed separately. Radioed both Death Screamers and Cave Spiders, saving the Twins' lives. Allied with Cave Spiders, Eyes of the Hill, and the Bloody Beasts (formerly).

Poison Maw: Chief is Lillian. Unparalleled grapples and brawlers. Known for their unique method of killing; a careful rig of needles mounted on their teeth to deliver necrotizing poison. Children are raised to develop an immunity to it. Favor shotguns and melee weapons. Are beyond fanatical to the cause of the CoV. Religious zealots for their Psycho Prophecy, which foretold the coming of the Calypsos (and, some say, their deaths and what followed). An individual Poison Maw will, without hesitation, betray his friends, family, clan, and own moral code for the Gods. Allied with Bloody Beasts (formerly), Scarecrow Stalkers, and Rockabillies. Long standing tension with Death Screamers.

Death Screamers: Chief is Bone Carver (Son of Cadmus; real name is Herakles). Brutal clan that believes in the benefits of physical suffering and pushing beyond natural limits of the body. Extraordinarily violent, fanatically loyal, and incredibly powerful. Favor submachine guns, assault rifles, and grenades for looting, robbery, and war. Engage in feats of athleticism and strength for sport, including sword fighting, boxing, and high risk obstacle courses. Keepers of the Calix. The Calix produces the Pain, a red, glowing algae capable of healing grievous wounds. Allied with Bomb Squad and Bloody Beasts (formerly). Source of Troy's Anointed. TROY'S HONORARY CLAN.

BulletTooth: Chief is Aggie (Nagheen). Only CoV clan to favor sniper rifles above all other weapons. Do not build their own guns but do construct the best silencers in the six galaxies. Largest clan on Pandora. Has brokered deals with many civilian settlements, making contracts of mutual aid. The most common one is to provide food and water to villages that allow disabled or elderly clan members to retire there, free of retribution. Guardians of the Grail, a network of fresh water springs. Allied with Rockabillies and Bomb Squad. At war with Scarecrow Stalkers (formerly).

Grease Monkeys: Chief is Gerardo Sparker. An ancient clan of expert mechanics and engineers. Designers and builders of the majority of the CoVs vehicles and guns (mainly the launchers and shotguns). Favor shotguns, SMGs, and pistols. Built Carnivora. Control one of the biggest Eridium deposits on Pandora; can create vehicle fuel boosted by it. (This was cracked by Joey Sparker, who was called the Iron Spark). Allied with Bloody Beasts (formerly), and Scarecrow Stalkers. At war with Eyes of the Hill and Terrorbytes (formerly).

Scarecrow Stalkers: Agricultural clan. Oldest on Pandora (contested, the Grease Monkeys claim to be older.) Also hunt Pandora's fauna for food; these guys can cook anything and make it not only edible, but good. Closest to a peaceful clan. The Stalkers will go months without killing a single person they rob and readily accept surrender or negotiated protection payments. Allied with Terrorbytes and Poison Maw.

Rockabillies: Chief is Effie. Matriarchal clan. Control a former Dahl mining town that has fallen to ruin. Traders of "luxury" goods; clothing, make-up, CDs, TVs, and other material comforts. Have the highest quality of life out of any clan. Often proud, boarding on snooty. More openly emotional. A clan that prides itself on musical talent (they aren't half bad.) Inspired by Greaser fashion, hence the name. Favor SMGs and pistols, with an extra preference for corrosive and radiation damage. Allied with Eyes of the Hill, Grease Monkeys, and Bulletteeth.

TerrorBytes: Chief was Clash; Clash was killed (accidentally) by Queen Mother Millie Xanth. Chief is now Giga. Pandora's best cybercriminals. Software engineers and hackers. Traders in computers, darkweb goods, viruses, and cyber crimes for hire. Favor no gun type but prefer smart guns and smart grenades. Piss poor in close combat. Most highly educated bandit clan. Were the clan of Hana, a sentient and humanoid android. Allied with Bloody Beasts and Scarecrow Stalkers.

Bloody Beasts (defected clan): Chief is Dezill. An incredibly violent and sadistic clan with very few morals. One of the few CoV clans with access to space transport; will make short trips to nearby space stations or moons in order to purchase off-world goods. Traded heavily in drugs, guns, and raw materials. In recent years, began trading in human slaves. Favor assault rifles and shotguns. Allied with Grease Monkeys (formerly) and Star Biters.

because we ALL knew this was coming, let’s be real. i’m gonna work on a temporary/by request/rare muse page on my blog because quite a few of the muses i have are ones i will only write on rare occasion, but for now, here’s some brief intros for the newcomers

BECK (Six Feet Under The Stars) : I’m not happy about his faceclaim but it’s all I’ve got for now. A poltergeist who has no memories of his real name or past life, and alternates between wanting to know them and wanting to keep them hidden, just in case his life was shit, because who needs that baggage. Mischievous, cynical, and secretly yearning for company of any calibre. (He will most likely have a Newsies verse since my current thoughts are whoever he was before he died came from that time period.)

GARETH HART (Galavant) : the last name is made up since he doesn’t have one. The guard to the king (see Richard, below), a job he has held since he was ten, Gareth is pretty rough and tumble on the surface, with a tendency to shun anything that could be seen as soft, caring, or ‘weak’, which Richard - a giant softie usually - tends to ignore. Gareth has a hard outer shell, but is a total sap if you get through to him. (He is exclusive to ONLY @heartsunholy‘s Madalena, no other Madalena roleplayers. Other than that, he’s pretty open.)

JACK ‘COWBOY’ KELLY (Newsies) : more or less an orphan and the unofficial and fiercely loyal leader of the newsies on the streets of New York. He has dreams of finally making enough money to run away to Santa Fe, but the connections he has formed in New York continue to give him pause as he ponders the choice between making a new start across the country, or staying with the family he has built and loved for years. (I’ve not watched the Broadway version yet, so knowledge is limited to the film for now, but we’ll see where I take his character after seeing the musical.)

KING RICHARD (Galavant) : I haven’t figured out a surname for him yet but in canon, he has a king whose parents assumed his older brother would be their successor - and so when it doesn’t work out that way, Richard is plunged into the duties of being a king with no prior training. As such he grows up soft and clingy to anyone who shows him any affection, which he never got from his parents. He can also be very cruel if he acts on knee jerk emotions, but... well. (As with Gareth, he’s very open to romantic relationships but exclusive to ONLY @heartsunholy’s Madalena.)

LOUIS ‘KID BLINK’ BALLATT (Newsies) : adamantly refusing to answer to his given name, Blink is blind in one eye. Depending on verse, he may have lost it in some way, or simply cannot see from that eye and wears the patch for looks, but regardless of backstory he is always half-blind. While Blink prefers to keep to the background, he remains heavily involved with the revolution Jack leads, feeling off if he’s not moving and working in one way or another. (There wasn’t much screentime for him in the film so as of right now he’s very canon divergent, which will change as I intake other Newsies media most likely, so please be kind and patient with me if he’s not exactly like you might imagine!}

SEAN ‘SPOT’ CONLON (Newsies) : the self proclaimed ‘king of Brooklyn’, Spot, as his territory is the largest of the different groups of newsies, learned early on that in order to ensure things wouldn’t get out of hand, he had to command respect. As it turns out, learning accuracy with the slingshot and keeping marbles on him at all times was a good way to do that. Despite being temperamental and at times stubborn to the point of trouble, he cares about the company he keeps and works to keep them safe.

my daenerys is very heavily influenced by book, show, and personal headcanons. i have taken what i want from each, but ultimately, if you don’t like certain things, you are free to unfollow. this is what you can expect if we write together. massive credit to both @killthebxy and @tymptir for their input, and everything they’ve contributed.

⋰ ⊰ 𝒊𝒇 𝒊 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌; 𝒊 𝒂𝒎 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒕. ┊┊ spans the time across all books, and seasons 1 - 5.

The main verse takes place as a mixture of book, show, and headcanon influences, starting with the history we know and love, so I won’t go into a ridiculous amount of detail since the plot points are pretty universally known. Born during the worst storm the world has ever seen, and at the cost of her mother’s life, Daenerys was raised by her brother Viserys in exile, to escape the wrath of the Baratheons who had already destroyed the majority of her family. She was eventually taken into the Free Cities with her brother, by loyal retainers, and after years of trying to raise support, they were given sanctuary by Magister Illyrio Mopatis in the Free City of Pentos. Despite living in constant fear of her brother ( who threatens she’ll “wake the dragon” ) and somewhat meek and malleable in response to such treatment, she dreams of finding a peaceful home and a place to belong.

SUBVERSE NOTE HERE: In any canon where someone who is not Viserys raises Daenerys ( whether that be Rhaella, or whether that be any other person – Arthur Dayne, Elia Martell, etc ) the tag will be as linked beside this. This is to signal that her background in that verse may be different, thus lining her up for the potential of a different life.

After reaching a ripe age for marriage, she is sold to Khal Drogo in exchange for an army of 40,000 men for the khalasar, for an army to take back the Iron Throne, Daenerys is initially terrified of her husband, who does not hesitate to take what is his by purchase. Throughout her time with the dothraki, she eventually finds the strength to fight back against her older brother, and manages to impact the culture of the people around her - instilling ideals against the way the dothraki used to live in a respectful manner. After Drogo’s death, and the birth of her dragons, her time with the dothraki comes to a close, as they won’t follow a woman who has not displayed traditional stereotypes of strength. As such, she seeks out the major cities in Essos in an attempt to fortify her power beyond just her broken people.

Making her way from Qarth, to Astapor, it is there that Daenerys acquires the army of the Unsullied, and forms an alliance with the Stormcrows. After freeing the slaves of both Astapor and Yunkai, she marches to Meereen, though she suffers unrest from the people under her power, and some degree of disobedience from her dragons, resulting in two of them being locked beneath the Great Pyramid after her largest slaughters a child. Note, there is a lot of content within this timeframe to take in, and solely for the avoidance of rehashing everything in the earlier books and the earlier seasons, I won’t go into more detail than that, but time frame wise, this verse will cover the duration of Daenerys’ reign until the fighting pits, where she takes flight on Drogon for the first time. It is also worth noting that while I will not defer to show canon when it comes to things like Doreah’s betrayal, if it works for our plot, I am happy to make it work.

The important things post books ending begin here. I will be accepting the canon that accompanies the course of season 6. That is, that after being found by the dothraki, Daenerys is taken to Vaes Dothraki to be tried before the council of Khals, and potentially fated to live a life with the widows. I will also be accepting the death that she gives those Khals by fire, and the new support of the entire Khalasar at her back - as their Khaleesi, she instills new values to ban their traditional sexual violence and strives to continue positive changes to the more problematic aspects of their culture, as she did as Khaleesi. I will also be accepting the season 6 canon that after securing Slaver’s Bay and renaming it the Bay of Dragons, she accepts an alliance with the Greyjoys, who escort her to Dragonstone.

SUBVERSE NOTE HERE: After the attack in the fighting pits by the Sons of the Harpy, Drogon carries a wounded Daenerys ( who took a blade to the thigh whilst mounting him ) from the arena and across the narrow sea to protect her from her enemies, finding his way north, to be found by the Lord Commander of the night’s watch. Over the duration of the time her leg heals, she remains within castle black, forging a friendship that buds on the edge of something more with the young Lord Commander, and is at the castle for both his death and resurrection. Only after his announcement to travel south does she decide it’s time to travel home, and back to Essos. upon return, and whilst Drogon stops for rest after his long fight, she is found by the Khalasar, who take her as prisoner. This default verse is based on my plots with @killthebxy and allows some prior interactions with members of the night’s watch, should any wish for it. Within this same verse, her armies travel North to fight alongside at the Battle of the Bastards, before returning to Dragonstone once he is crowned King of the North and realising she is no longer welcome there. Heavily plotted with Fil.

This verse will span upwards to her journey North, though heavy plotting can change her reasons for that. By default, it is Jon that persuades her of the real fight to the North, but happy for that to change. Also happy to keep the canon of Daenerys executing the Tarlys - controversial, I know, but it’s staying. The major changes within this arc come from a personality basis; she’s not nearly as entitled in these exchanges, nor as bloodthirsty. This verse will also include her arrival in the North, by which time she faces massive isolation amongst wary people, and even from her own advisors. It is up for discussion whether she agrees to Northern independence at this point or slightly later, in either subset of this canon - but she will agree at one point, or another. This canon will end at the Battle of Winterfell.

from here, there are two potential paths for my canon to follow. one in which the battle ends with arya killing the night king, and one in which the battle ends with winterfell’s ruin. & note that in both, after what happens at winterfell, daenerys is forced to carry a sword, and to wear armour for both larger scaled battles. whether this be a small one created for her, or whether this be dark sister, gifted by the free folk ( thanks to @arcusignis for that theory ) is up for speculation. in both, at the very least, the dragons will be forced to wear chestplates.

⋰ ⊰ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆. ┊┊ set after the battle of winterfell.

Massive credit to Fil, who also helped to write this verse. In this verse, the premise is simple to follow. The battle of Winterfell happened as per show canon to an extent - battle strategies were different than the mess that was show canon, and I’ll defer to @killthebxy and his beautiful headcanons, along with discussions with @tymptir for how Jaime would have integrated his own strategies. Instead of killing the Night King, Arya managed to kill an Other - this resulted in a large portion of the wights dying, and enough time for the Northern people to begin to scatter. Note, it is also unclear in this verse if Bran is alive or dead, and that is also up for negotiation. The casualties that take place in their attempted retreat are enormous, thus leading to more wights, and very few managing to escape. In this canon, Daenerys is harmed after her fall from Drogon, though Jorah is still very much alive.

Forced to retreat South, and find what little resources they can, the remainder of the Northern forces must reach an agreement with Cersei, who is admittedly shaken at the fall of the Northern forces. In this verse, as part of that agreement, Jon Snow is taken as prisoner until the battle, to ensure that this is not a trap for Daenerys to take power.

SUBVERSE NOTE HERE: There is also a subverse here wherein Daenerys herself offers up her own claim to the throne in exchange for support from the South. This agreement also extends to her own execution following the potential success of the battle - a deal she would agree to, given that there are more important things than the throne at this point, though her key condition would be that the North is left alone and untouched by the South.

Within this verse, the battle for the Long Night continues on to an extended battle at King’s Landing, with the dragons fighting over the Dragonpit, until the Night King is separated from Viserion once again. In most canons, unless specified otherwise, I will also have Daenerys as pregnant during this fight - and with that in mind, she fights anyway because she would never let the dragons fight a battle without her. She is their mother.

SUBVERSE NOTE HERE: There is also an alternate subverse here where Daenerys does, in fact, temper Lightbringer for Jon as Nissa Nissa once did for Azor Ahai, and once again, we can all thank Fil for this. In this verse, she willingly gives her life to temper his sword.

Following this time, we welcome a dream of spring easily, given that the people of King’s Landing have seen her saving them from the darkness, and that timeline will take place in a separate part of the overarching verse.

⋰ ⊰ 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅. ┊┊ set during season 8 timeline, post bow.

This verse follows the show theory, that the big bad is not in fact the Night King, but the purpose of the story is the fight for the Iron Throne. As a result, any deaths in 8.03 will be considered canon in this verse unless plotting dictates otherwise. In this verse, after rest and recovery of her armies, Daenerys begins the fight for the Iron Throne by travelling South once more. Firstly basing herself at Dragonstone, and then travelling closer to King’s Landing. Any events of 8.04 ( Rhaegal’s death, Missandei’s death, the Greyjoy ambush ) will not be considered canon in this verse unless we explicitly discuss otherwise.

In the actual attack on King’s Landing, the main focus for Daenerys will be eradicating the scorpions on the castle walls. In conjunction with @tymptir and her lovely Greyjoys, there is potential for Rhaegal to be used against her via Dragonbinder, or alternatively, for Euron to lose at an earlier stage of the battle ( because presumably it’s not over so shortly ) and to make an agreement in exchange for his own life, to betray Cersei. In verses where that is void, either Yara/Asha Greyjoy can lead the charge against the Iron Fleet with the remainder of her own, or alternatively, Daenerys will burn it herself. If and only if Varys betrays Daenerys, will she consider executing him - and no, Tyrion will not be betraying her in this verse. She has the support of her Hand, at the least, and she will not abandon him.

SUBVERSE NOTE HERE: Another subverse! In this one, I’m going to be controversial and embrace the madness storyline - but not done the way the show did. In this verse, upon her attack to King’s Landing, Daenerys accidentally sets off the wildfire in the city, and the guilt at finishing what her father started causes her psyche to fracture, unable to split reality from fiction. In this verse, she either loses her unborn child or Drogon, and her madness manifests in seeing visions of herself as if she was standing in the room with her. Grief and isolation cause her to want to take her own life.

Once breaking through the walls to King’s Landing, and once the armies there see what forces she brings, a surrender is quick to follow - and is one she takes gladly. Resources are distributed to the citizens of the city to ensure they don’t suffer while the transition of power happens. Cersei’s fate is up for negotiation, though I defer to the theory that either of her younger brothers will deal with her long before Daenerys has to. She takes the throne quickly after.

⋰ ⊰ 𝒂 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈. ┊┊ set in the future.

This verse, finally, takes place after Daenerys is in power. In default, she will take Jon as her husband - though he will not rule as King, but instead by personal choice, takes the title of Consort. Her rule is a peaceful one, granting Northern independence - and truth be told, if any others ask for independence, so long as they prove themselves happy and functioning, she will grant it. Every year, she travels to Meereen several times to check on how progress is going there, and instills forms of welfare and many orphanages within King’s Landing, as well as basic forms of education and skills trades for all. Tyrion remains her Hand.

She knows that a perfect world isn’t created over one lifetime, and eventually if there will be a broken wheel for all, then she’s okay with the idea - but for now, it’s about building the city from the ground up so that no one knows what it’s like to not have a home, not like she did.

⋰ ⊰ 𝒂 𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒚𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅. ┊┊ official season 8 ending verse.

This verse is the closest to the canon for season 8 that you’ll ever see me come, and is based on theories like this one here. In this verse, Cersei frames Daenerys by setting off the wildfire around King’s Landing ( referencing that one line about Cersei “having other plans for the Dragon Queen ) after the bells have been rung, making it look like she didn’t accept the surrender ( and making Dany herself think that she herself set it off, by the timing of it all ). Blaming herself for the thousands of deaths that have now occurred, and believing she is responsible for the deaths of so many innocents, Daenerys begins to burn the Red Keep itself as the city burns around them.

Between the losses of everyone she’s loved and knowing she’s being betrayed by so many people, and adding the guilt of her actions, this verse ends in her taking her own life with her last conscious thought urging Drogon to destroy the Iron Throne. ( Note that if you would rather it be Jon who kills her, then I’m not opposed to the idea, but it’ll require plotting beforehand to clarify! )

In this verse, Drogon carries her body away towards Volantis, and either Red Priestess revives her, or in burning her body, Drogon manages to revive his mother as per the fire and blood rituals that have saved her before. This verse was also written in collaboration with @killthebxy.
