(n.) the rush or the inexplicable joy one feels after seeing or experiencing something romantic
“Chocolate is the ingredient for love~!” you say after pouring what seems to be an entire bucketful of chocolate chips into your bowl.
Your friend Saeko has seen just about enough of your nonsensical chatter about baking, your boyfriend and your abundant love for both. Already exhausted from a recent scolding by the vice-principal, she decides that it’s better off to smile and nod rather than try to come up with a snarky remark for your innocent mania.
“T-That’s a lot of chocolate,” she blurts out. When she picks up her spatula from the bowl, the girl grumbles at the sight of a liquidy trail drizzling down the utensil. “Ahh geez, it’s not supposed to be like this, isn’t it? Katagiri-sensei’s going to fail me again...”
You smile and hand her a bowl of flour. “Don’t worry, Saeko-chan. Just add a bit more flour and you’re good to go! You can never go wrong with cookies.”
The halo above your head is nearly visible. Saeko swears she can even hear angels singing to her in the background as you mix away on your fragrant bowl of dough. You don’t even seem real—from your angelic grin down to your overwhelmingly flowery aura. It’s tough enough to imagine that you’d ever talk to her of all people, but to imagine you’d go for a guy who’s just as much of a thug...
Unthinkable! Saeko shakes her head. She’d thought you’d pulled a joke on her the first time you announced that you were dating... him. Udai Tenma, star of the Boys’ Volleyball Club, a red-hot beacon of undomesticated temper.
She’d always known you liked him—though which part of him you liked is somewhat still a mystery to her—and as much as Saeko wanted to protect you from those ruffians, that absolutely infatuated look in your eyes was too much to bear. And eventually, she succumbed to your incessant ambitions of high school romance.
“You’re a saint, dude,” she sighs longingly. “I don’t get how you’re still dating that guy. I’m not really one to say anything about this, but don’t you think Udai’s kind of a jerk with the way he treats you?”
You chuckle, like a sweet grandmother about to tell a nostalgic tale to her grandchildren.
“I suppose you can say that Tenma-kun is a bit shy. He likes to act tough and mighty when he’s around people, but he’s actually just a normal boyfriend with a very sweet tooth and a penchant for manga.”
Saeko scowls. “Normal’s normal, but you have to at least let him know that you have your limits too. I really can’t stand leaving the two of you alone, w-what if Udai breaks your heart, or worse—”
“Tanaka-san. If you have time for chatter back there, then surely, you’re finished with your cookies?” at the sound of the grouchy Home Economics teacher at the front of the class, Saeko quickly returns to her bowl in a sorry attempt to look busy.
Deciding to humor her interest, you lean towards her and whisper lowly. “I’ll be fine, Saeko-chan. He may not look like it, but Tenma-kun’s actually very cute.”
In her mind, it’s much easier to simply handcuff herself to you so that you’re under her watch at all times possible. But your gaze is nothing short of genuine—you really love this guy, and the fact that you’re still with him, assures Saeko even just a tiny bit that he might not be so bad after all... with you at least.
You’re already storming away in your little world of baking. It amuses your best friend whenever you’re off making your personal masterpieces (“‘Masterpiece’ is absolutely right!” she’d say while stuffing her mouth full of your mini tarts). Each and every one of your creations are whipped up with the utmost amount of love and care, and for just the right reasons, everyone’s been pestering you to set up a bakery after high school. Your regular patrons just happen to be the Karasuno Boys’ Volleyball Club—with the addition of the lively Coach Ukai who is rather fond of how much filling you put into your red bean buns.
As regular as regular can be, you’ve found yourself visiting the Volleyball Club clubroom after school every Wednesday to hand out your treats to not only your aloof boyfriend, but also to his friends, his coach and the prostrated manager who direfully needs a pick-me-up. And suddenly, you’re ‘Karasuno’s Cookie Goddess’.
“Ah, you’re making another batch, Y/N?” Saeko perks up when you split your dough in half.
“Yep!” you giggle, essentially a high school student drowning in love. “I want to make something special for Tenma-kun today.”
“... What’s the occasion? Is it his birthday or something?”
You shrug, face absolutely alight. “Nope, I just want to give him a surprise~”
══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════
Tenma isn’t exactly unapproachable. It’s just that people tend to avoid him at all costs. Perhaps you were just bold... or remarkably stupid, but if you hadn’t addressed him that day, life would’ve probably been drabber.
Your parents and your friends (with emphasis towards your overprotective Saeko-chan) had shown their unfiltered concern when the news of your relationship circulated like wildfire. What was the analogy they used, again?
“You’re like a rabid bridge troll and a rabbit! It doesn’t work!”  You could only laugh at their valiant efforts of a correlation... if they were really trying to make one. But after a few more reassuring pushes and awkward family dinners, they’ve come to be more lenient about your little ‘liaison’.
But you never feel like you have to worry when Tenma is around. In fact, when Tenma is around, you feel calm—even when he’s spouting off curses to a taller rival.
There’s a warmth unlike any other when he holds or kisses you. And though you’d have to drive him through hell and waters to say it out loud, you already know that every action he does for you is out of love. Words are material, it’s the action that counts, right?
“Sorry for the intrusion~!” you call out into the open doors of the Boys’ Volleyball Club’s space.
A flash of obnoxious yellow hair flashes before your eyes and suddenly, an imposingly tall  figure appears in front of you out of nowhere. “Cookie Goddess!”
“Good afternoon, Yukimura-kun,” you smile. “Is there only you right now?”
“I’m here too, Y/N-chan,” the lax-faced captain Tokito emerges from the room in the midst of zipping up his jacket. His eyes flicker towards the packages in your hands and a smile cracks on his face. “Ooh, chocolate chip cookies today~”
You quickly raise the fragrant bags of treats into their view, bringing in the remaining swamp of boys from the clubroom. Suddenly, the common hallway is blocked by an influx of starving teenagers who are rampaging on about your existence.
“So good...” Yukimura murmurs dreamily, mouth full of chocolate. “Man, anyone would be lucky to have you as their wife if you were to cook them these everyday.”
A brazen first-year with frosted tips elbow him and sighs. “Too bad you’re taken, huh, Y/N-chan-senpai? If it were me instead of him, I’d always make it a point that ‘Heeey... guess what my girlfriend made for me today~ Isn’t she the best—”
“Oi, brat. Whose girlfriend do you think you’re talking about?”
The gangle of boys freeze up simultaneously at the grouchy voice behind you (aside from Tokito, who’s yawning at the whole ordeal). Whipping around to the dark aura boring holes into your back, you immediately light up at Tenma’s presence.
“Tenma-kun~!” you launch at him with your arms wide open. You’re ready for some sort of swerve from him, so you make sure you protect his bag of cookies with your arm... You’ve learned this counter-attack the hard way, of course.
But what you don’t expect is that your boyfriend makes no move to avoid you at all.
“H-hey! Don’t just lunge at me like that, you idiot! What if you fell down and knocked your head open?” Ah, at least the embarrassed comment is there.
You can only smile at him kindly. From the edge of your eyes, you swear that you can see a light blush dusting his face as your boyfriend gains newfound interest in your shoes.
“Come with me for a while,” he finally grumbles, effectively breaking the silence between the both of you. Grabbing your hand, Tenma leads you down the little aluminium staircase, eliciting small grates from the steps below you and a mass of curious whispers from the group you’d just left behind.
“Hey, Udai-kun~” Tokito calls out, a lilt of roguery in his tone, “Make sure to get back in time for practice, okay? And keep Y/N-chan in one piece, won’t you? We can’t get another Cookie Goddess if you don’t.”
When he turns into a secluded corner away from the prying eyes of his teammates, you can hear him audibly huff and mutter something under his breath. As silence lingers between you, you nearly forget about the reason why you came to visit.
“I made some cookies for you, Tenma-kun,” you say to him, urging the neatly wrapped bundle into his hands. “I hope you like it.”
You can clearly see the hesitation in his eyes when he takes it in his hands. You can probably guess why.
(“Y/N, your skills with a knife are scary, dude,” Saeko grimaced as she watched you trail over the dough with the gleaming blade of your paring knife.
“Aaand... done!” you proudly wiped the sweat off your forehead. It would’ve been more helpful with a cookie cutter around, but you figured that it would’ve been more heartfelt otherwise.
‘Heartfelt’, you pondered on the word for a moment. Would this be too heartfelt for such a rag-tag person like Tenma? It would probably be better to go for something simpler, just like the other days...
Nah. You shook your head as you chucked the tray of heart-shaped cookies into the oven.)
You’re hoping for a shocked response from him, but Tenma only grumbles meekly. You brace yourself for another scolding for acting too chummy with him, or being too affectionate, or—
“You shouldn’t get too close with other guys.”
Wait.
Tenma crosses his arms, the curls of his hair falling gently over his forehead. His pink cheeks darken into a soft maroon. “If they found out you’re giving me this sort of special treatment, they’ll be all over you the next day, asking for it too... I don’t like it.”
The laugh that rises in your throat threatens to burst. What is this, you think. Your stomach hurt from the mere image of this innocent “delinquent” professing his jealousy for you. If he was like this all the time, wouldn’t that be an interesting change... Aah, your boyfriend really is cute, isn’t he?
A giggle escapes you and you watch him jolt in chagrin. “Tenma-kun, you’re so red.”
“I’m not!” he yells rather briskly, then shoots back at you. “You can’t say I’m red when you were all burning up as you were giving me these heart-shaped cookies.”
Touché. “I’m glad you like them, Tenma-kun.”
His gaze visibly softens up as you give him an angelic smile. “Uh, yeah. Thanks.”
At times like this, you really do see the boy who’d shyly confessed to you under the shade of the summer ginko tree. It wasn’t anything of a distant memory, it was just that Tenma’s usual demeanour and your unrelenting tolerance hindered the both of you from being completely outward with one another. Maybe something like this isn’t so bad after all.
“I-I have to go back to practice. You can go home by yourself, right?” your boyfriend clears his throat, urging you to leave.
Though you wished the moment would last a little longer, you know there are other countless shared opportunities with him. “Mm-hm! You do your best in practice, okay?”
He ruffles your hair and chuckles endearingly.
“Atta girl. Now go home before Tokito catches me getting all touchy-feely with you.”
Bidding him goodbye, you sullenly trudge away from your boyfriend (and his friends waving back at you from the balcony). Then the idea strikes you.
Special cookies ought to have a special flair to them, no?
Cupping your hands around your mouth like a megaphone, you shout, loud enough for his teammates to hear. “I love you, Tenma-kun~!”
And the crowd goes wild.

(15:58) Now Tokito’s all over me thanks to you, making me do extra diving drills. You better make more of those cookies as compensation, idiot. Be prepared for it.
(15:58) Btw, don’t forget to look both ways when you cross the street on the way home. If you get into an accident, you won’t be able to apologize to me properly.
(15:58) ... Hey.
(16:00) I love you too.

Better Than Me (2/2)
Part one is here!
Summary: You really are better than them.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x (female!)Reader.
Word Count: 3000-ish.
Warnings: Angst. Fluff.
Tumblr media
It was ridiculous. So ridiculous that it bordered near downright insane. Absolutely fucking ridiculous. Impractical, stupid and completely, utterly ridiculous. Beautiful, sparkly and downright amazing, but ridiculous. You fucking loved it.
The baby pink, bejeweled handgun sat inside a pink velvet box on your lap. The bow, which was also pink, of course, was lying at your feet, which were clad in bedazzled silver Louboutins. Gems of all colors on the rainbow covered it on all sides, from the barrel to the handgrip and along the safety pin.
You gazed up at Tony, who wore an amused expression on his face, before glancing over at Pepper. She had her hand over her mouth in embarrassment, clearly horrified by Tony’s gift choice. The card read that it was from both of them. Clearly, that wasn’t the case.
“Happy birthday, kid.” He said with a smirk that nearly extended from ear to ear.
“I don’t even want to know how much you spent on that,” Pepper muttered, shaking her head while you took the thing out of the pink and white polka-dotted tissue paper.
The others sighed audibly when you smiled, annoyed that Tony’s gift overshadowed theirs yet again. To be fair, they’d all expected it, but all of them secretly hoped any one of their gifts would be your favorite.
“I love it,” you said, twirling the weapon around in your hand, “and I agree with Pepper, I can’t even imagine how much you spent on this thing...”
“You’ll make it work,” he mused, “Two million dollars, by the way, and you could just thank me.”
Your breath caught in your throat and for a moment, you were sure Pepper was going to faint. Natasha shook her head, watching the scene unfold in horror. It was the ugliest thing she had ever seen. Wanda, who seemed to share none of her feelings, had created a monster out of you.
“Thanks, Tony,” you blew him a kiss, unable to get up from your seat at the dinner table that was covered in white roses in silver vases and wine that came from expensive bottles.
“It’s very pretty,” the witch said, “Can I hold it?”
“Please,” you shoved it into her hands, “by all means.”
“You’re insane, Tony,” you said as you took the gift Bruce had gotten for you from his outstretched hands with a smile, “Absolutely fucking nuts, but I love you for it.”
Your eyes went around the room, finding Steve at the end of the table of which you sat at the head. You were the birthday girl, after all, the pink satin sash draped around you said so in large, cursive letters and so it was your turn to have the most important seat of the house. It was a ridiculous ordeal, he thought so anyway, but you were smiling and chatting and enjoying the company of your friends and it was good to see. He couldn’t remember the last time that had happened and knew very well he was to blame.
He was the one who pushed you away, even though it was for your own good.
You took Thor’s gift just as the waiter began to serve your first course, and since he was seated closest to you, you thanked him with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Steve’s gift came last. You didn’t expect anything from him given the circumstances.
Four hours, six courses and many glasses of wine and Asgardian mead later, you found yourself back in your room. Gifts given to you by your fellow team members were sprawled out on your bed, ranging from a pair of silk pajamas with glittery Ugg slippers to match from Wanda to Starbucks and Sephora gift cards from Sam and everything in between. Chocolate covered strawberries in a glittery box, two romance novels, a bottle of beautifully aged red wine from Asgard and a peach-toned Dior lipstick, all tokens of appreciation given to you by the people you cared about the most.
Despite the hardships that you faced the previous year and the social distancing that occurred during that time, you couldn’t deny how good it felt to be with the team again. You’d changed a lot in a year, grown to be a different person than the one you were before. It wasn’t necessarily a good or a bad thing in your mind, it just happened naturally.
You sat down beside the velvet box, eyes automatically flying towards the item on your far left. A drawing of you, sitting on a terrace, staring out into the sunny skyline with a cup of coffee in your hand. It was an old drawing by the looks of it because your hair was much shorter and a different shade and your clothing was far plainer than it was now; black jeans and a white t-shirt. A signature that read SR sat in the bottom right corner in messy, doctor-like handwriting. It made your toes curl.
Of course, he was the one with the overly personal gift. You didn’t know whether it was because he simply had no fucking clue what 21st-century women liked to receive for their birthdays or whether he’d purposely done it to make you remember the day it was drawn, but the latter happened and now, you were sitting on your bed with prickling eyes and goosebumps that lined your skin.
You remembered that day very vividly. You’d only been an Avenger for three months and were struggling to adjust to the fact that you had to suddenly follow orders. Before joining the team, you’d worked alone, hired by people with deep pockets and dark intentions. You made your own rules.
The first time Steve had taken you out for coffee he kind to offer you advice. At first, you thought it felt a little like he was trying to be the human resource manager with the way he talked to you, you continued to meet up every Saturday afternoon and as the weeks passed, something in the dynamic changed.  He loosened up, got rid of his Captain America persona and instead became Steve. You didn’t know what caused the change, but it was good, allowed you to actually get to know the man behind the suit and vice versa.
That particular day was a good one, It was a sunny day in spring, not too hot and not too cold, with a soft breeze that carried the scent of fresh flowers across the terrace. You’d ordered a latte, Steve liked it black. You weren’t talking, but instead, a comfortable silence hung between you. You’d brought a book just like you always did and read it while occasionally eyeing the people that passed you by. Steve, whose cheeks had become fiery red out of the blue, pulled out a leather-bound sketchbook and began to draw.
You never asked him what he was drawing, even when he stored away his pencils and shoved the book back inside his tote did you not bother to pry. Not even when you became so close you’d sometimes fall asleep together on the couch, did you not ask.
You knew now, but they didn’t say ignorance is bliss without reason.
You began to mindlessly pick at three layers of lavender toned sparkling nail polish, pulling at it as it came off your fingers with far too much ease. You’d paid the lady $60 for your manicure three days prior and now, you were ripping it off. With a deep sigh, you pushed yourself up, gripping the back of your heels so you could slip them off with ease. You’d probably never wear them again.
You slowly began to clean up the mess, discarded packaging, boxes, and gift bags and placing them in the corner of your room near the door. You put everything away except for the drawing, which you couldn’t decide what to do with. Why was it such a big deal to you, anyway? You hardly spoke to Steve anymore and if you did, it was during pre- and post-mission briefings. Maybe that’s why it made you feel so strange. it didn’t feel right, such a personal, intimate gift after how far the two of you had drifted apart.
He hadn’t asked you about Netflix in four months and you hadn’t offered your expertise on which shows and movies were the best. You didn’t bring him coffee anymore but instead, he made his own, never leaving enough in the pot for you to make a cup as well. The message he sent you was loud and clear and in return, you were an open book.
He’d grumble when a stranger was seated at the breakfast table on Sundays courtesy of your hospitality, avert his eyes when they tried to kiss you openly (which you refused). The pang in his chest would hit him when he saw Ubers out front whose engines were running to carry you to your dates in high-end restaurants and fancy bars. He wasn’t jealous, he kept telling himself. He was just worried about your safety when you disappeared into the night with strange men. Men that weren’t him, ironically.
He should’ve seen you when you were right in front of him. When you were there, literally waiting for him to make a move on you, begging him with your mannerisms and your looks, your glances, and smiles even when his jokes weren’t funny. He knew damn well you would make an amazing couple, that you could take on the entire fucking world as a duo, but he was too scared to put it on the line, too scared of what might happen once the bad guys caught a whiff of your relationship. They’d already tried to destroy Bucky and Jesus Christ, they nearly succeeded. He couldn’t handle the thought of losing you to an organization like HYDRA, or worse. He never told you this. You had no idea. You were convinced he didn’t want you because of your flaws. Because of who you were.
You got over it, shut out the thought of ever holding hands with Steve in public, the thoughts of ever feeling his lips softly pressing against your plump cheeks and his body weighing down on top of you while his voice vibrated against your ear and neck. You managed to forget about him, managed to exchange the memories and fantasies of him for diamond necklaces, silk blazers, and expensive shoes. You traded him in for strangers with big bank accounts driving nice cars wearing expensive suits. They managed to fill the void he created by pushing you away.
So yeah, the gift bothered you. It was too nice, too sweet, so sweet you had to struggle to stay stoic when thanking him earlier. You literally had to stop yourself from smiling too big, from allowing tears of gratitude and happiness to completely ruin your make-up. if things had been different, you would have done those things. They weren’t. He didn’t want you and now he was being nice. It didn’t make sense.
Just as you were about to change into a different outfit for the evening, your phone vibrated. You picked it up off your nightstand and opened it. It was a text message, but not from the guy who would be knocking on the front door in the coming hour.
I didn’t get a chance to personally wish you a happy birthday. Can we talk? -S
You gripped the device so hard you nearly crushed the screen. Six months ago, a message like this would’ve had you crying on your bathroom floor for four hours. Now, it just made you angry. So angry, that you picked your studded Louboutin off the floor and chucked it at the wall. The heel broke off against the concrete, but you didn’t notice. You weren’t going to wear them again anyway.
Your fingers typed furiously, breathing coming out in shallow huffs. Images of the girls he’d brought back to Tony’s party’s flashed before your eyes while your fingers went faster than your brain could keep up with.
Roof. Omw.
Whether he understood the abbreviation ‘omw’ or not, you didn’t take the time to guess. You left your room without changing into the other dress or putting on new shoes. The elevator went up agonizingly slowly, but it was too late to go back and take the stairs. The buttons were pushed and the door closed.
He was standing by the edge, leaning against the railing with his arms crossed over his chest. In contrast to you, he had changed his attire, leaving the light blue button-down he was wearing earlier for a plain white t-shirt and black sweatpants. He looked down at your feet, noticed how your polished toes were bare and opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again when he caught the expression on your face. You weren’t surprised to find him there first. Hell, you wouldn’t be surprised if he’d come up there running. Apparently, though, he did know what ‘omw’ meant.
“What the hell is this?” You asked, waving your phone in front of his face, “what do you think you’re doing?”
“What do you mean?” He asked, voice wavering.
“What do I mean? What...,” you snorted, “What do you mean?! The gift, the talking? We shouldn’t be here.”
“But why?” He knew why but chose to ignore the sensical part of his brain that told him he shouldn’t be doing this.
You lifted your arms, a deep breath leaving you while you considered what to say. You wanted to come up with an excuse, tell him you were busy or that you’d lost sight of not just him, but the entire team, but fuck it, lying wouldn’t get you anywhere. It had never gotten you anywhere before.
“Because I have to get over you.”
He was silent, taking in your words. They stung, even though he already knew the truth they carried.
“I couldn’t have you constantly hanging around me anymore. I couldn’t stand seeing those girls hanging off your arm at those stupid parties and I sure as hell didn’t want to hear how fun they were and how great and wonderful and how amazing, and-”
He stepped forward, gripping your arms. The sudden contact made blood rush to your head, making you nauseous and dizzy simultaneously.
“I spent so much time wondering why they were better than me,” you mumbled, “I still haven’t figured it out.”
“They aren’t better than you,” he replied softly, “they don’t even compare to you.”
You looked up, eyes large and glossy and so goddamn pretty with that champagne eyeshadow and winged liner and Steve thought he was going to lose his mind then and there.
“I had to let you go because I’m afraid,” he admitted, “terrified of what might happen if anyone tries to get to you because of me.”
“Steve,” you tried, but couldn’t find words.
All this time, you thought he didn’t like you. That he wasn’t interested in you, didn’t want anything from you but a friendship at most. You’d taught yourself to ignore your constant desire for him because it would never be reciprocated.
“When you distanced yourself from me, I knew I’d messed up, but it was too late. I’d dug a hole for myself and there was nothing I could do to get back out,” he snorted, “I needed those girls as a distraction, but none of them are as good as you.”
He smiled sadly, taking your hands in his larger, calloused palms and began to rub circles on your knuckles.
“I’m sorry,” he sighed, “I’ve been stupid and an ass and I don’t deserve to even be in the same room as you. I fucked up, Y/N.”
The skin on the back of his neck was soft when you clasped your fingers around it, muscles tensing up when you began to pull him down to meet you. Without heels on, you’d lost a significant amount of height on him, causing him to tower over you. On a hot day, he could be your personal parasol, shielding you from the sun with his entire body.
“Idiot,” you mumbled before his mouth found yours.
He kissed you, hands gripping your waist out of fear that if he were to let go, he’d wake up in his bed alone. But it wasn’t a dream, he knew it because the soft feeling of your glossy lips against his own was unlike anything he’d ever felt.
“Idiot,” you said again when you took a moment to breathe.
“I am,” he kissed you again, the sweet taste of Chardonnay and that night’s dessert - creme brulee and vanilla ice cream - still lingering on your tongue, sending his senses in complete overdrive.
“I don’t want to stay away from you anymore,” he said finally, “I’d never let anyone hurt you.”
You smiled, heart ready to explode from the sudden burst of happiness you experienced for the first time in a long time. Maybe Wanda was right all along.
“Steve, I can defend myself. You know that, right?” You mused.
“I’ll kill them if they try.”
He captured your lips with his again. The scent of his cologne, oud, and pine, nearly caused your knees to buckle from under you. You didn’t even realize the goosebumps that lined your skin, or the fact that the date you were supposed to meet up with had already bailed on you. It didn’t matter, because you finally had Steve where you wanted him. It only took for the two of you to drift apart almost completely for you to realize that you could never truly get away from one another.
You placed your head on top of his chest, allowing his body heat to warm you up in a hug that engulfed you. It was nice, the feeling of his chest rising and falling slowly while you watched the city’s skyline in the dark. The want for it had been suppressed for so long you almost forgot what it felt like.
“Steve?” You asked, peeking up at him through false eyelashes and three layers of waterproof mascara.
“Hmm?”
“Your gift was my favorite.”
Yeah, all of those bitches definitely weren’t better than you.

Companions react to synth Shaun calling them "mom/dad" (romanced please) btw love your reactions!
(Love abandoning my blog on a bi weekly basis. Codsworth, Dogmeat, and Strong excluded cause I think Shaun will mostly get “Shaun? You ok there buddy?” looks of confusion if he did that)
Hancock- He’dnever thought about kids, because that was always a far off prospect,a part of a future he always thought he wouldn’t live to see, ordidn’t want to focus on too long. Back in Diamond City, he alwaysthought he’d cash out long before any kid he might have had would bebig enough to remember him, or even speak. And if any of the ladieshe took to bed got pregnant, none of them told him. After becoming aghoul, he knew any hopes of being a father would be dashed. Sole wasthe first person that made him really even think about fatherhood. They had a whole little pre-packaged family for him to squeeze into. He’d thought of himself as Shaun’s dad for a long time now, butactually hearing it come out of the kid’s mouth, it hits him rightsquare in the chest. He gets more choked up than he anticipated. Heactually has to bite down on the start of a whimpering sob, and itcomes out in a strained squeak. “You okay?” Shaun asks. Hancockclears his throat, but his voice still cracks when he says, “Y-yeah,squirt, I’m alright. Just got a uh, frog caught in my throat.” He’sbeaming the rest of the day.
Deacon- He’swearing his shades and a hat pulled low, face mostly hidden behind acrinkled newspaper, and Shaun passes him with a casual, “Hey dad.”Then he’s on his way again. He’s almost shaken. Not just because thatwas the first time Shaun had used that word, but because he’d soeasily seen through him, and not just his disguise. Deacon relied onbeing illusive, staying far enough from the bear trap that waspersonal attachments, lest he end up chewing off his own leg toescape when it inevitably clamped down too hard on him. Better toavoid them entirely, before they trapped you. He had been careless.Had let Shaun and Sole get close, and now his stomach churned fromthe wave of guilt pulling him under. Worse than his own neglect wasthe feeling of rightness in that word. It didn’t hit his ears asbeing inherently wrong, a word not meant to describe him, like‘Deacon’ had been once. He liked Shaun. He liked being 'dad’. Heliked being Shaun’s dad. He swipes off his glasses and pushes off hishat, more naked than he could remember being in years, and can onlylaugh at himself, baffled. “What am I gonna do with you, kid,” hemutters, but he knows the answer. He leaves his things behind andfollows the one, truest thing he has.
Piper- Shaun hasactually called her 'mom’ several times before it really sticks outto her. She likely wouldn’t have noticed if Sole didn’t jokinglyrepeat the word once, after Shaun asks for a few caps to grab a bowlof noodles from Takahashi. It’s then that the full weight of it sinksin. A warmth instantly flushes through her chest and into her face, and she has to clap her hands on either side of her cheeks. “Hecalled me mom,” she says, incredulous. “I’m mom.” Sole can onlylaugh, “You know he’s been calling you that for weeks.” She feelsembarrassed at her own thick skull, but giddy at the same time. She’dbasically raised her little sister, yet Nat had no choice, she washer blood after all. That Shaun had chosen her, weighed his optionsand decided, yes, she was 'mom’- there were no words for it. She hadnever been more grateful, and when he returns from Takahashi, shesweeps him up in a hug that lasts long enough he complains loudly. And again he calls her 'mom’, in a petulant and drawn out groan thatstill makes her tear up.
Curie- It was hardcoming to terms with her feelings for Sole. They had been exceedinglypatient while she worked out the tangle of her new emotions, foundout how to live without stooping to the base impulses that insistedshe spend every moment in Sole’s wake. Like a rat tapping a buttonwired to the pleasure center of their brain until they died ofstarvation. She just felt good around them, and eventually, goodaround Shaun as well. She couldn’t imagine a life without either ofthem. It took time to temper that feeling, so new and alien to her, until she felt comfortable when not in their presence. Perhaps it wasthe already intense love she felt for both Shaun and Sole that madeaccepting motherhood easy for her. She knew the importance of amother in a child’s life, or at least a soft figure they could relyon, so she tried being that for him. The one constant in an otherwiseharsh world, eager to grant him no reprieve from the horrors beyondSanctuary and the protection of his parents. The first time he says,“Love you, mom.” she chokes up. It’s the first time her keenanalytical mind could make no sense of what she felt, the sensationstoo human and overwhelming, but she hugs him tightly and lets thetears pearl in her eyes. She loves him too, and somehow, knowing (orat least guessing) that he must have felt that same overfullsensation in his heart that she did in hers, she’s never felt sohuman.
Nick- Technically,he and Shaun might have been more closely biologically related thanShaun and Sole. So far as either of them were 'biological’ to beginwith. To him, Shaun and Sole were family, regardless of what any ofthem were made of. But being family and being a dad were twodifferent things, so when Shaun busts out that little one syllableword, it stops Nick dead in his tracks. He almost thinks he shortcircuited. “What was that?” Shaun looks up at and blinks. “Isaid thanks, dad.” There was definitely no mistake that time, thekid called him dad. He stares, completely dumbfounded, and swears hecan hear something audibly whirring in the back of his head as hiswheels spin uselessly. He doesn’t know how to respond. He just patshim on the top of his head, ruffles his hair just a bit, beforewalking out with a smile on his face and a warmth deep in his chest. It might have been petty to frame it this way, but he feels, for thefirst time, he has something the old Nick never had. Somethingentirely his own.
Cait- It makes hertense all the way up her neck and shoulders. Holy shit. The kidactually thought of her as a mother. She wasn’t a mother, shecouldn’t be, she didn’t have a maternal bone in her body. The onlymother figure she’d had in her life was the scum of the earth. If shewas a mom, she would be just like her, wouldn’t she? She would fuckup. She would make Shaun like her. She would infect him like her mominfected her. Hearing him say it almost sends her into a panicattack. She leaves without much warning and it takes an hour for herhands to stop shaking. All the shit she faced in the world and a kidcalling her 'mom’ was the thing that terrified her the most. Shealmost had to laugh at how pathetic that was. Only after hours oftalks and more than a few tears between her and Sole can she stand tohear the word without grimacing, but even then, it sends her mindbarreling through all the reasons she didn’t deserve the title.
MacCready- Hehadn’t impeded on Shaun’s life, had been working slowly, movingfurther in his life by increments. He didn’t waltz in the first day, slap a baseball cap on his head and insist Shaun call him 'Pops’. Hehad been a kid once, and any adult that tried too hard to seem likeone of the good ones was an adult he didn’t trust. Kids could pin aphony a mile away. So MacCready had been patient. Never oversteppedhis boundaries, and made sure Shaun knew he would respect linesdrawn, as most kids have never been told they could draw lines adultswould find worth respecting. It wasn’t long before Shaun ran to himfor an understanding ear and a shoulder to cry on. The first time hecalled him 'dad’ was through tears over a schoolyard taunt, and ittook every bit of strength he had not to end up bawling right alongwith him. When it was settled and he’d sent him away with a bit ofwisdom (“You can hit a kid in the face with a sock full ofmutfruits really, really hard and it doesn’t leave a mark. They can’tsnitch if there’s no proof you hit 'em.”) he’s left to run the wordover in his head again and again. His brain plays tug of war betweenjoy and a longing ache for his son so far from him.
Preston- He’dalways expected, when he had a little one of his own, that hearingthem say 'dad’ would be the highlight of his whole life. It is, in away, but there is no awe-stricken realization, no tears. Shaun is hisblood- what else would he call him? It isn’t that the title isunimportant, nor mundane, just that it feels so natural, it neverstrikes him as out of the ordinary. It’s what he is, after all. Thetrue importance only dawns on him when one day, while Shaun isplaying fetch with Dogmeat, and a settler nearby smiles at him. “Thatyour son?” No one ever asked him that. They never really had to, itwas no secret his relationship with Sole, and most people inSanctuary knew every detail of where Shaun had come from, wherePreston fit into the family. His chest swells unexpectedly at theprospect. At the thought that yes, Shaun was his son, and he his dad.He nods. “He seems like a happy boy,” the settler chuckles.Preston rubs the back of his neck, “Well, I’m trying…” And thatwas it really. He was trying to make him happy, keep him safe.Sometimes it was effortless, sometimes not, but he was trying, andthat was all he could be expected to do.
X6-88- A naggingpedantic streak told him that no, he was not Shaun’s father, couldnever hope to be half the man Father had been. For all hisconflicting feelings on the Institute, the Shaun he had known wasstill a man he respected, had admired, as much as a Courser wascapable of that sort of thing. They were built for cold calculationsand solid logic- idolatry was never a facet of their programming.Even beyond not measuring up to the man himself, X6 found it hard totake the innocent comment in the way Shaun likely intended it. As away to convey how Shaun saw him. He had never been overly familiarwith either Shaun or Sole, even after the months they’d beentogether, as gentle as Sole had tried to be with him. They had wantedto ease him into a more human place in the world, but it hadn’treally clicked for him. Yet he couldn’t deny the way that word fellon him, with a heavy and comfortable sort of weight, like a burden hesomehow knew he could carry. Wanted to carry, wanted to be close tothe boy and Sole, wanted to be called that again and again, wanted toallow himself to want in the first place. For the first time in hisexistence, X6 found himself wanting something, a selfishness he,until then, would have considered himself incapable of. He wantedthis.
Danse- With nomemories of his own parents, or any family to speak of in Rivet City,Shaun and Sole had come to mean a lot to him. He loved them, and themere presence of that deep well of emotion made him feel human, likehe felt before the revelation that saw him banished from theBrotherhood of Steel. That Shaun was like any other kid, that helpedtoo. That gave him hope. When Shaun looks up at him with bright eyesand ends a simple question with a casual “Is that ok, dad?” Danseis struck with just how unprepared he is for it. He wrestles with howto answer, this is a big moment hidden in something small, after all.Does he let himself tear up? Does he hug him? What he settles onfeels alien and uncomfortable for him, but he reaches down to ruffleShaun’s hair and in a voice that is almost not his own, says, “Sure,s-…son?” Of all the reactions he could have gone for, he lands onthe one that hits him as the most awkward. Shaun can only arch abrow. “Uh… ok. Thanks, dad?” The word 'son’ slips once more outof his mouth and he has never been so thankful for Shaun’s departure,so he can bury his face in his hands. He’s happy, but he’s alsoembarrassing.

Happy Almost-February everyone!
Tumblr media
It’s time for another one of my TBRs which is really just a ‘suggested list of books I may or may not read,’ because I’m such a moody reader.
This month I’m planning on participating in Contemporaryathon, so I’m going to include that TBR here, too.
Contemporaryathon Round 6 Info
Dates: 2/10 – 2/16
Hosts:
Chelsea from Chelseadolling Reads
Julie from Pages and Pens
Natasha from MyReadingisOdd
Challenges:
read a contemporary book with green on the cover
read a contemporary from a new to you author
read a diverse contemporary (keeping in mind that it is Black History Month!)
read a backlist contemporary (something that has been on your TBR for over a year)
 read a dark/hard-hitting contemporary
read a contemporary with an illustrated cover
read a contemporary that is beloved by a member of the book community (and shout out the creator!)
Books I’m Hoping to Read:
Credence by Penelope Douglas / book with green on the cover I keep seeing this book around and the hype has absolutely gotten to me. I’m dying to read it and it’s on Kindle Unlimited!
Tiernan de Haas doesn’t care about anything anymore. The only child of a film producer and his starlet wife, she’s grown up with wealth and privilege but not love or guidance. Shipped off to boarding schools from an early age, it was still impossible to escape the loneliness and carve out a life of her own. The shadow of her parents’ fame followed her everywhere.
And when they suddenly pass away, she knows she should be devastated. But has anything really changed? She’s always been alone, hasn’t she?
Jake Van der Berg, her father’s stepbrother and her only living relative, assumes guardianship of Tiernan who is still two months shy of eighteen. Sent to live with him and his two sons, Noah and Kaleb, in the mountains of Colorado, Tiernan soon learns that these men now have a say in what she chooses to care and not care about anymore. As the three of them take her under their wing, teach her to work and survive in the remote woods far away from the rest of the world, she slowly finds her place among them.
And as a part of them.
She also realizes that lines blur and rules become easy to break when no one else is watching.
One of them has her.
The other one wants her.
But he…
He’s going to keep her.
Thirty Day Boyfriend by Whitney G. / new-to-you author This is one I have on my Audible Escape wishlist. It’s only a couple hours long, so it’s perfect for a readathon. I’ve also never read anything by this author, so it works for the prompt.
I should’ve never agreed to this arrangement…
Thirty days ago, my boss—Mr. Wolf of Wall Street, came to me with an offer I couldn’t refuse: Sign my name on the dotted line and pretend to be his fiancée for one month. If I agreed, he would let me out of my employment contract with a “very generous” severance package.
The rules were pretty simple: No intimate kissing, no actual sex. Just pretend to love each other for the press, even though I’ve secretly wanted to knock that sexy smirk off his face since the first day we met.
I definitely didn’t need to think twice about this. I signed my name and started counting down the seconds to when I would never have to deal with his special brand of ass-holery again.
I only made it to one minute…
We argued the entire four-hour flight to his hometown, failed to make a convincing impression with the welcoming press, and right when I was about to knock that arrogant look off his face in real life? He purposely dropped his bath towel in front of me, distracting me with his nine-inch cock to “show me who the bigger person was” in our relationship. Then he gave me his trademark smirk once again and asked if I wanted to consummate our marriage.
Tragically, this is only day one. We still have 29 more days to go…
Behind the Bars (Music Street #1) by Brittainy C. Cherry / diverse contemporary I’ve been absolutely obsessed with Brittainy C. Cherry lately after discovering her last month. I’m determined to read her backlist and this one just happens to be on Audible Escape!
When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen. The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.
Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth. Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find. And in a flash, she was gone.
Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans. She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.
Caged.
Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her. Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.
When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops. When we met again, I became her darkest storm.
The Infatuation (The Josh & Kat Trilogy #1) by Lauren Rowe / backlist book I actually can’t believe I haven’t read this trilogy yet because I’ve been dying to hear this couple’s story. Just in time for the Reed Rivers Trilogy coming out in Feb.
It’s a war of wills between stubborn and sexy Josh Faraday and Kat Morgan. A fight to the bed. Arrogant, wealthy playboy Josh is used to getting what he wants. And what he wants is Kat Morgan.
The minute Josh Faraday meets feisty, vivacious Kat Morgan, he wants her. Not for a relationship, of course. He doesn’t do those. He wants her in his bed. But, to his shock and extreme frustration, Kat won’t play by Josh’s rules like all the others. No, this stubborn woman declares she won’t so much as kiss Josh until he divulges some highly personal information . . . But it’s something Josh has never told anyone, and won’t be telling Kat. Not over his dead body, no matter how gorgeous and sexy she is.
But the chemistry between the pair is explosive, scorching hot electricity like nothing he’s felt before. Oh, God, he’s got to get a taste. He figures all he has to do is wear the sexy woman down with is patented “playboy razzle dazzle”—show her the hotness she’s missing out on and she’ll cave, like all the rest . . . The only problem with that strategy? It’s Kat’s strategy, too: she plans to wear Josh down and get what she wants by showing him the hotness he’s missing out on.
It’s a war of wills. A match to the bed. Who will crack first? And when they do, will either of their hearts be on the line?
Disgrace by Brittainy C. Cherry / hard-hitting contemporary Brittainy is known for writing hard-hitting books, and I’m sure this one will be no different.
Each day I prayed for my husband to love me again.
After fifteen years together, he walked away from me, and into the arms of another.
I didn’t know how to cope. I didn’t know my worth. I didn’t know how to exist without him by my side.
All I wanted was for him to come back to me.
Then, Jackson Emery appeared.
He was supposed to be a distraction for my mind. A summer fling. A confidence boost to my bruised heart.
We were perfect for one another, because we both knew we wouldn’t last. Jackson didn’t believe in commitment, and I no longer believed in love. He was too closed-off for me, and I was too damaged for him.
Everything was fine, until one night my heart skipped a beat.
I didn’t expect him to make me laugh. To make me think. To make my sadness somewhat disappear.
When our time was up, my heart didn’t know how to walk away.
Each day I prayed for my husband to love me again, yet slowly my prayers began to shift toward the man who wasn’t right for me.
I prayed for one more smile, one more kiss, one more laugh, one more touch…
I prayed for him to be mine.
Even though I knew his heart wasn’t destined to love.
Get a Life Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert / illustrated cover This has been sitting on my Kindle, haunting me as I hear everyone rave about it and I’m excited to get to it ASAP! I’m really looking forward to the chronic illness rep as well.
Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamourous family’s mansion. The next items?
Enjoy a drunken night out. Ride a motorcycle. Go camping. Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex. Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage. And… do something bad. But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.
Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.
But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…
The Bromance Book Club (Bromance Book Club #1) by Lyssa Kay Adams / loved by a member of the book community It’s not just one member of the book community that has been raving about this book, I’ve heard SO many people gush about it and I’m so excited to pick it up!
The first rule of book club: You don’t talk about book club.
Nashville Legends second baseman Gavin Scott’s marriage is in major league trouble. He’s recently discovered a humiliating secret: his wife Thea has always faked the Big O. When he loses his cool at the revelation, it’s the final straw on their already strained relationship. Thea asks for a divorce, and Gavin realizes he’s let his pride and fear get the better of him.
Welcome to the Bromance Book Club.
Distraught and desperate, Gavin finds help from an unlikely source: a secret romance book club made up of Nashville’s top alpha men. With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it’ll take a lot more than flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.
Here are the non-readathon books I’m hoping to read this month:
Tumblr media
Rage (Stormheart #2) by Cora Carmack I finished Roar, the first book in this series in January and this book happens to be on Audible Escape, so I’m planning on finishing it.
Princess or adventurer.
Duty or freedom.
Her Kingdom or the Stormhunter she loves.
If Aurora knows anything, it’s that choices have consequences. To set things right, she joins a growing revolution on the streets of Pavan.
In disguise as the rebel Roar, she puts her knowledge of the palace to use to aid the rebellion. But the Rage season is at its peak and not a day passes without the skies raining down destruction. Yet these storms are different—they churn with darkness, and attack with a will that’s desperate and violent.
This feels like more than rage.
It feels like war.
Tumblr media
Call it What You Want by Brigid Kemmerer After reading and falling in love with the first two books in her Cursebreakers series, I decided I really want to give her contemporaries a try!
When his dad is caught embezzling funds from half the town, Rob goes from popular lacrosse player to social pariah. Even worse, his father’s failed suicide attempt leaves Rob and his mother responsible for his care.
Everyone thinks of Maegan as a typical overachiever, but she has a secret of her own after the pressure got to her last year. And when her sister comes home from college pregnant, keeping it from her parents might be more than she can handle.
When Rob and Maegan are paired together for a calculus project, they’re both reluctant to let anyone through the walls they’ve built. But when Maegan learns of Rob’s plan to fix the damage caused by his father, it could ruin more than their fragile new friendship…
This captivating, heartfelt novel asks the question: Is it okay to do something wrong for the right reasons?
Tumblr media
Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women #1) by Evie Dunmore I’ve heard so many good things about this book – particularly that it is great for people who don’t normally read historical romance. I also happened to get it as my Book of the Month book in Jan.
A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford Rebels, in which a fiercely independent vicar’s daughter takes on a duke in a fiery love story that threatens to upend the British social order.
England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women’s suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain’s politics at the Queen’s command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can’t deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for.
Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn’t be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn’t claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring…or could he?
Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke….
Tumblr media
Hunted by Meagan Spooner I feel like I keep almost reading this book, but never quite do. It’s a beauty and the beast retelling and I am always here for those.
Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.
So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.
Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

The Beginning of Everything (The Rising #1)  by Kristen Ashley This is a full-cast narration that I am SO excited for. It’s available on Audible Escape.
From the unparalleled imagination of New York Times best-selling author Kristen Ashley comes an enchanting new audio-first fantasy romance series that will sweep you away!
Once upon a time, in a parallel universe, there existed the continent of Triton. The land was filled with beauty, but it was also splintered by war. Out of the chaos grew a conspiracy to reawaken the Beast, a fearsome creature who wrought only tragedy and devastation. The only way to stop him was to fulfill an ancient prophecy: Triton’s four strongest warriors must wed its four most powerful witches, binding all nations together and finally bringing peace to the land.
This is the story of their unions: the quiet maiden Silence and the savage king Mars. The cold warrior Cassius and the fiery witch Elena. The steadfast soldier True and the banished beauty Farah.   One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid It’s been a while since I’ve sat down with a Taylor Jenkins Reid novel and this is one of her backlists that a friend of mine recommended.
In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.
On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.
Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.
That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.
Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?
Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

Heartbreak Warfare by Heather M. Oregeron, Kate Stewart I picked this book up at the recommendation of many people who attended Shameless Book Con, and I’ve heard others talk about it as well. It’s supposed to be super emotional, so if I’m feeling like that kind of romance, I’ll be reaching for this one.
Briggs,
Remember when we parted ways in Germany? It was the day I broke your heart. What you didn’t know was that I was breaking mine too.
I thought they’d be enough–my husband and my son. That I’d get home and everything would go back to the way it was . . .
Before the war. Before the ambush. Before you.
But, no matter how hard I try, I can’t erase the trauma we shared. I can’t seem to forget the way my heart beat in time with yours.
The truth is I’m lost without you.
I thought the nightmare was over when they pulled us from that hole in the ground, but nothing could have prepared me for the war I’d face at home. I know it’s selfish of me to ask, but, please, I have to see you one last time. . .
All my love, Scottie
Tumblr media
The Right Swipe (Modern Love #1) by Alisha Rai I’ve heard a lot of good things about this and I found it on Scribd!
Alisha Rai returns with the first book in her sizzling new Modern Love series, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom.
Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules:
– Nude pics are by invitation only
– If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice
– Protect your heart
Only there aren’t any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night… and disappears.
Rhi thought she’d buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautiful—and in league with a business rival. He says he won’t fumble their second chance, but she’s wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely that’s too high a risk…
Tumblr media
Passion of Park Ave by Lauren Layne Lauren wrote my all-time favorite Friends-to-Lovers romance: Blurred Lines and everyone has been raving about this series. It’s available on Scribd!
From the author of the New York Times bestselling Stiletto and Oxford series, the first in a sizzling new series following the unlikely friendship of three Upper East Side women as they struggle to achieve their dreams and find true love and happiness in the city that never sleeps.
For as long as she can remember, Bronx-born Naomi Powell has had one goal: to prove her worth among the Upper East Side elite—the same people for which her mom worked as a housekeeper. Now, as the strongminded, sassy CEO of one of the biggest jewelry empires in the country, Naomi finally has exactly what she wants—but it’s going to take more than just the right address to make Manhattan’s upper class stop treating her like an outsider.
The worst offender is her new neighbor, Oliver Cunningham—the grown son of the very family Naomi’s mother used to work for. Oliver used to torment Naomi when they were children, and as a ridiculously attractive adult, he’s tormenting her in entirely different ways. Now they find themselves engaged in a battle-of-wills that will either consume or destroy them…
Filled with charm and heart and plenty of sex and snark, this entertaining series will hook you from the very first page.

Love from A to Z by S. K. Ali Not gonna lie, I’m a little scared to read this one because there is Multiple Sclerosis rep in it that is supposed to be pretty heartbreaking, and I’m not sure if I can’t quite handle it, but we’ll see.
A marvel: something you find amazing. Even ordinary-amazing. Like potatoes—because they make French fries happen. Like the perfect fries Adam and his mom used to make together.
An oddity: whatever gives you pause. Like the fact that there are hateful people in the world. Like Zayneb’s teacher, who won’t stop reminding the class how “bad” Muslims are.
But Zayneb, the only Muslim in class, isn’t bad. She’s angry.
When she gets suspended for confronting her teacher, and he begins investigating her activist friends, Zayneb heads to her aunt’s house in Doha, Qatar, for an early start to spring break.
Fueled by the guilt of getting her friends in trouble, she resolves to try out a newer, “nicer” version of herself in a place where no one knows her.
Then her path crosses with Adam’s.
Since he got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November, Adam’s stopped going to classes, intent, instead, on perfecting the making of things. Intent on keeping the memory of his mom alive for his little sister.
Adam’s also intent on keeping his diagnosis a secret from his grieving father.
Alone, Adam and Zayneb are playing roles for others, keeping their real thoughts locked away in their journals.
Until a marvel and an oddity occurs…
Marvel: Adam and Zayneb meeting.
Oddity: Adam and Zayneb meeting.
February TBR/Reading List: including #contemporaryathon picks! Happy Almost-February everyone! It's time for another one of my TBRs which is really just a 'suggested list of books I may or may not read,' because I'm such a moody reader.

Brooke Lemon has always led the life she wanted, wild adventures—and mistakes—included, something her perfect sister, Mindy, never understood. So when Mindy shows up on Brooke’s doorstep in the throes of a break-down with her three little kids in tow, Brooke’s shocked.
Wanting to make amends, Brooke agrees to trade places, taking the kids back to Wildstone for a few days so Mindy can pick up the pieces and put herself back together. What Brooke doesn’t admit is she’s just as broken . . . Also how does one go home after seven years away? It doesn’t take long for Brooke to come face-to-face with her past, in the form of one tall, dark, sexy mistake. But Garrett’s no longer interested. Only his words don’t match his actions, leaving Brooke feeling things she’d shoved deep.
Soon the sisters begin to wonder: Are they lemons in life? In love? All they know is that neither seems to be able to run far enough to outpace her demons. And when secrets surface, they’ll have to learn that sometimes the one person who can help you the most is the one you never thought to ask.

MY THOUGHTS
First off, Jill Shalvis… I devour just about every book she releases. But for some reason, I had missed this series and so The Lemon Sisters was my first book (Book 3 in the series) that I had read.
As I dove into the book I was immediately taken by these sisters. My sister and I were so close as kids, then life going in different directions tore us apart as adults. I think a lot of sisters can relate to this. Maybe it was the emotions of my real-life situation that made me latch onto these sisters and I was totally emersed in their tale. The dual stories of the sister who has detached from the daily life of the sister that is struggling with being a mom, a wife, a businesswoman and wanting it all to go so smoothly. It just all hit home in a very real way to me. So much of the storyline spoke to me and even shouted at me. I laughed and cried and sighed along with the characters. I started the book and didn’t put it down for more than 5 minutes at a time before I had to get back to see what was going on with Mindy, Garrett, Brooke, and Linc… plus don’t forget about those adorable children too.
This is a book on second chances, both with sisters and the guy. It’s about repairing relationships. Learning to love yourself and be happy with the life given to you. It’s about new beginnings and putting the past in the past. It’s a book I won’t soon forget.

There’s two sides to every love story. The how you fell in love, and the how you fell apart.
This is ours.
The cardinal rule of friendship is you don’t mess with your friend’s sister. That goes double when she’s his little sister.
It was just supposed to be fun.
She wasn’t supposed to end up being the love of my life. And I definitely wasn’t supposed to break her heart.
Ainsley is a wedding dress designer. That should’ve been a warning that she’s a hopeless romantic. That should’ve clued me in that she believes love conquers all.
But there are some things that love can’t fix. I’m one of them.
She thinks love is the answer.
But love is the reason I let her go.

MY THOUGHTS
This book… THIS BOOK!!! I cried… I laughed… I cried again… It had all the emotions and boy did I ever fall for these characters! Hands down will be in my top 5 for 2019. (SEE I KNEW!)
I’ve been reading Prescott for a while and this book is by far her best yet. She has a great way of weaving the story and grabbing your attention, making you feel each of the excitement of the characters, the passion, the remorse, the love, the grief.
This is a journey of two people who fall madly in love. Its a secret though, since she is his best friend and business partner’s little sister. But the moment these two connect on the page, you know they are destined to be together. But when tragedy strikes, is love, JUST LOVE enough?
I felt so much reading this book. I had to put it down at times to get take in the moments – the emotional pulls, the heartache and then the healing.
Although the book has some light moments, for the most part, it’s a heavy book. I had a good cry reading it. And fell in love with the hope that love can conquer all. Read this book. You won’t be sorry.

#ROMCOM
Cowritten by USA Today best-selling author Tara Sivec and award-winning narrator Andi Arndt, a hysterically funny, heartfelt romance about starting over and taking chances.
Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next-door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born.
Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life reading erotic novels to the listening world. And with each episode, I find myself embracing my new alter ego more and more. Now I’m starting to feel more comfortable in my own skin and do things I never would have dreamed of – like kissing my neighbor.
Look out, Waconia, because Heidi’s on the loose! She’s in your ears, in your hearts, and down your pants…wait, that didn’t sound as good as it did in my head. Well, you get the picture, don’tcha know!

MY THOUGHTS
This had to be one of the funniest books I’ve ever read/listened to! This book was EVERYTHING and I recommend it to everyone who is looking for a fun, witty, excitingly sexy book.
A former kindergarten teacher steps out of her comfort zone, taking a job at an audiobook company. She becomes best friends with one of the biggest movie stars out there along with his romance novelist wife. All while trying to get up enough guts to approach the super sexy new next-door neighbor, that she feels she’s too plain jane to catch his eye. All while starting a podcast to help her take her unsexy to super hot!
Once again, being from North Dakota, this book brought back all the memories. The accents alone took me there. I just could not stop laughing!!
That being said, if you get the chance (and are part of the romance package with Audibles it’s FREE to listen to) YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE AUDIOBOOK!!! I was laughing like a maniac and I’m sure I had quite a few people ready to call the police on me as I was driving, wiping away tears and spewing soda out of my nose from laughing so hard (PS – Don’t drink anything while listening if you don’t want this to happen).
Get this book!!! The End

FROM THE #1 ‘NEW YORK TIMES’ BESTSELLING AUTHOR COMES AN UNEXPECTED LOVE STORY OF FAMILY, SECRETS, AND THE MOST INTIMATE OF DECEPTIONS.

Nobody will be the wiser. It’ll be our secret.

Because sooner or later something’s got to give. There’s no way I’m giving up Isobel. But once the truth is exposed, it might not be my choice at all.

MY THOUGHTS
I think this book is RVD’s best book to date. It was filled with so much angsty goodness and I immediately fell for our hero (or is he?) Bridge. I understood his need to do the things he did (I know vague much? But I can’t give any spoilers away!)
The story is about twin brothers, Bridge and Julian, who were torn apart in middle school by their parent’s divorce and pitted against each other by their father. Full of twists and turns. Secrets and lies. Throw in a fake relationship and angst and you’ve got yourself a winner! Julian and Bridge are as different as night and day which makes what happens even that more intriguing.
Just know that you will be sucked into the story from the first chapter and if you’re like me, once you start, you’ll be putting your life on hold until you finish the last page. (Remember bookmarks are for quitters!)
Each book with Rachel gets better and better and I think Stealing Her takes her fans back to her earlier works. And the best part is we get book two in the series (each book is a standalone) in February of 2020.

Ok, so there are really THREE books that made my number one this year. All by the same author and all from the same series. And I see nothing but bigger and better things heading her way. The Sutter Lake Series by Catherine Cowles is my top read for 2019.

MY THOUGHTS
Set in the idyllic setting of Sutter Lakes, Oregon, these books are interconnected standalone novels full of suspense and romance. Each book I was immediately thrown into the life of our main heroines – who all are running in some way from their pasts and starting new in this small town. They are strong, independent and a lot of the times stubborn, in both the good and pain in the ass way, paired with men who support and connect with them in just about spiritual ways. And all are super sexy (Sherrif, Musician, Tracker) and make a girl swoon.
Sutter Lake is home to a herd of wild horses which also play a big part in each of the novels. After reading this series, I promptly begged my husband to look for a job in Oregon. Catherine makes you fall not only for her characters but also for the scenery which becomes a character within itself. I can vividly imagine where these men and women walk as everything is painted so clearly for the reader.
Catherine has definitely become my go-to author for romantic suspense. You get lost immediately upon cracking open the book and she takes you and her characters on a journey that keeps you riveted to the page and falling hook, line, and sinker into the storyline. She had a busy year publishing three books with the conclusion of the series being published in early February 2020. (Beautifully Broken Control). These books were everything to me. Catherine is my most recommended author for 2019. And so, my number one book(s) for 2019 is the Sutter Lake Series.

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6 - Part 7 - Part 8 - Part 9  -Part 10 - Part 11 - Part 12 - Part 13 - Part 14 - Part 15 - Final
The walk back from the diner was silent. You would look over at him momentarily, watching the dim lights from the lamp-post reflect against his skin, before looking away. You didn’t know exactly what to say to him, or how to react, or what to do. You wanted to ask him about the competition, about what would happen next, but the words never seem to leave your mind.
You both arrive at the apartment complex, stopping momentarily in front of the door to face each other before going in. You looked at the ground, in wonder of what to say, before you felt something warm against your shoulders.
“(Y/N),” You heard his voice become low and soft, just barely audible for you to hear, “I just wanted you to know, that i care about you so much. And whatever you want, whatever you need…” You looked up at him through your hair, his eyes already fixated on you as he nodded his head towards you, “I will do anything for you. Please, believe me when I say this.”
“Yugyeom,” you said, lifting your head up fully to see that he was gently gripping your shoulders. You placed your hand over his, giving him a gentle nod, “I know.”
“Maybe we should quit the competition, (Y/N).”
“No, we can’t, you know we can’t,” You said, gripping his hand gently, “You need the money. You need to be financially stable. I don’t want you to live on the street ever again.”
“But it’s hurting our relationship. And not only that,” he paused, eyes wondering down. You followed his gaze to see that he was staring at your leg. “I bet your leg is even worse now.”
“No,” you said quickly, waving your hands a bit to bring his gaze back up to you, “No no no. My leg is completely fine, really.”
You sighed softly, closing your eyes before taking your hands in his. You look up at him, giving his hands a gentle squeeze. “Yugyeom, listen to me. As you said before, I care about you. I care about you too much to let you quit this competition. I really,” you paused, taking a deep breath, “I really think that we can do this. That we can win this thing together.”
Yugyeom didn’t answer. He stared at the ground for a few seconds, letting out soft breaths every few seconds, but he never let a word slip past his lips.
“Yugyeom~” you said sweetly, letting go of his hands so you could press yours to his cheeks. You lifted his face up slightly, giving him a slight pout before shaking his head a little bit. He smiled slightly, rolling his eyes a bit before settling them back onto you. “I really think we can do this. Here, let’s make a promise.” You took your hands away from his face, holding up your pinky to him, “If my leg gives me any other problems, we’ll drop out of the competition.”
“You’re going to lie to me and tell me that it doesn’t hurt now matter what,” he said, placing a hand over yours to put your pinky down.
“No!” you shrieked, taking his hand off of yours and holding your pinky up right in his face, “I won’t. I promise, see? I never break a pinky promise, so you should believe me when I say that I’ll tell you the truth. If my leg gives me any more trouble, I will pull us out of the competition, and we can just rest until another one comes up. Deal?”
Yugyeom looked at your pinky momentarily, before letting out a deep sigh. He rolled his head back before taking your pinky in his. “Alright, deal. But if you lie to me, (Y/N), I swear to g-“
“I won’t, I won’t,” you reassured him, kissing your pinky gently while smiling at him, “I’ll tell the honest truth. My leg feels fine right now, and when we go upstairs I’ll ice it.”
“Wait,” He said, raising an eyebrow at you, “What do you mean by, ‘we’? Do you still want me to stay at your apartment with you?”
“I think it’s the least you can do. Taking care of me after kissing other girls.” You said, shrugging a bit  before turning your back to him, “Don’t you?”
“Hey!” he said, making you smile as you pushed the door to the apartment complex open, “That’s unfair!”
“Life is unfair,” you said, holding the door open for him, “Better hurry up before I lock you out, Yugyeomie~”
The night went on as it usually would; you and Yugyeom lying on the couch, pigging out while watching a movie, staying up later than you should like some high school kids would, before passing out and having him carry you to your bed to sleep comfortably.Thankfully, things were seemingly normal between you and him, and that’s all you could ever ask for.
The next day went by almost in a flash as well; You and him spent the morning together, him deciding to quit practicing with someone else and simply going over the drawings of some of the moves that you had done. He didn’t want to leave you, and thankfully, you didn’t want him to leave either.  You ate together, you rested your leg and did your best to tell him about any small pains that you were experiencing and he would try and help you alleviate those pains in any way possible.
Instead of stressing about the competition being so close, you did your best to practice, keeping as calm as you normally would when you were about to compete, all the while having a lovely support system.
“I’m gonna make a big sign,” You heard Bambam say. Yugyeom had invited him over a day before the actual competition as a sort of comic relief for both you and him. Thankfully, it worked. Bambam’s presence made almost all of your worries go away. He chewed on a Twizler that he had bought, before holding up his hand and dragging it across the air while saying, “Yugyeom And (Y/N), Fighting!”
“You’ll probably be kicked out if you do that,” You said, walking to get a waterbottle from your fridge, “The people who hold the competition despise two types of people; people who cheat, and people who make a fuss and bring signs.”
“Why?” Bambam gasped, seeming offended, “I want to support my friends! Why would they be mad about a nice little sign?”
“Because,” Yugyeom interjected, “It could be very distracting.”
“I don’t see how.”
“Okay,” Yugyeom said, leaning over the counter, “Imagine you’re in the middle of doing something you love, so you’re super focused. And then, out of the corner of your eyes, you see pink glittery letters, and hear someone screaming-“
“Ah Bambam! I love you so much!” You helped yugyeom’s paint get across, shaking Bambam’s shoulders softly as you screamed in his ear, “Fighting! Fighting! Fighting!”
Bambam smiled softly as you shook him, letting a soft chuckle escape his lips. “Okay okay, I get it. It could be very distracting.” Bambam looked up at you both shrugging it off and letting a little sigh leave his mouth. “It’s not like you two need me, anyway! The dream team doesn’t need supporters.”
He crossed his arms and pouts, turning away from you both.
“Aw, don’t be a baby,” you said, pressing his cheeks together, “Of course we need your support there. Just support us in silence.”
“We’ll be incredibly grateful if you shut up for a change,” Yugyeom said, patting Bambam’s head as he stole the Twizler from his hands, taking a bite from it, “It’ll be the most shocking thing in the world.”
“Hey!” Bambam yelled, making you both laugh, “I don’t talk that much!”
“Yes you do,” you hummed, wrapping your arms around him gently, “But that’s why we love you sooooooo much!”
“Yeah!” yugyeom chuckled, wrapping his arms around the both of you and making you all laugh, “You’re the loud one, i’m the cute one, and she’s the talented one.”
“And who gave you the title of cute?” You asked, pinching his cheek softly.
“I believe you did, (Y/N).”
“Shut up!” You said, pushing Yugyeom’schest slightly as he chuckled, “Why do i even like you, anyway?”
“Because i’m cute,” Yugyeom pouted, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you closer.
“Gross,” Bambam yelled, throwing Twizlers from the package as if he were some middle-schooler, “Get a room, you two.”
“It’s my apartment, Bam,” you smiled, sticking your tongue out at him.
You had never had a friend group like this, let alone a friend group at all, and you were grateful that Yugyeom had brought you all together. You looked up at Yugyeom as him and Bambam had a conversation, watching him smile and laugh as he listened to his best friend talk, and you couldn’t ignore the fluttering of your heart as you did so. As they talked, you hugged him tight, leaning your head against his chest while closing your eyes, and thinking of a few words, over and over.
Thank you.

Ellie-Brando C-S Support
Ellie @ mine Brando @zlosopher
C SUPPORT
Brando: Hmm... (That woman looks familiar)
Ellie: hmm? (That’s quite a vibrant color, where have i-)
Brando: Excuse me. I'm not sure if we've met yet.
Ellie: I suppose we haven't, have we?
Brando: I'm Brando, Lord Xander's retainer. Who might you be?
Ellie: (Lord Xander's retainer...huh. must be that way.) Eileen, pleasure to meet you.
Brando: A pleasure to meet you as well Eileen. What exactly are you doing here?
Ellie: Reading, as you can see. [Holds up her book]
Brando: What kind of book. History? Adventure? Romance?
Ellie: [deceptively chipper] a murder mystery! The crown prince's loyal swordsman was found dead in the rose garden, strung up in thorns and pierced with his own blade, it’s quite the tale~
Brando: Oh my. That sounds kinda interesting actually. How far into the story are you?
Ellie: They’ve just discovered the body, nobody knows who could have done it! oh how I wish I could be left to read unhindered. I feel much more engaged when I can immerse myself into the words
Brando: My apologies then. I didn't mean to disturb you. After you're done may I treat you to some of the pastries I've baked to make it up to you?
Ellie: Perhaps, what pastries are we speaking of?
Brando: Tarts, Danishes, and a few pies.
Ellie: ...perhaps i wouldnt mind a short break now
 B SUPPORT
Ellie: ...you know, you remind me of someone i once met.
Brando: Actually, I thought the same... I think I saw you somewhere before...
Ellie: i have a reckoning we are perhaps thinking the same event. I am recalling to when i was yet learning the staff and there was a great fire in the village. There was a man with your eyes there, fighting against the cavalier that defended me. That cavalier had been part of an outlaw gang that had kidnapped a young noblewoman and would pay a hefty reward if she was safely returned
Brando: Wait... You mean the cavalier that held that woman captive? The cavalier I killed by splitting his head open?
Ellie: (rising anger) That cavalier that had pulled me from the burning mess that was the courthouse, from beneath the crest of Nohr. that cavalier that had given his last elixir so that I may yet live to heal others. you are lucky his mare did not split your head open with her hooves, panicked as she was her primary rider was now dead.
Brando: ...Both sides knew the risk. Your group was doing their job, as was mine. It was either fight or die.
Ellie: (closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, visibly resettling when she calms down, a slight smirk and smugness on her face) ...and what will you do now? There is nothing you can say to anyone, what proof do you have? (leaves with a sweep of her caplet)
Brando: ... You didn't even finish the tea I made to go with your pastry.
Transition
Brando: Hello again Ellie.
Ellie: ....
Brando: Still upset huh? It's understandable.
Ellie: ... are you quite finished? Or are you volunteering for target practice with my new stave
Brando: Huh?
Ellie: ....
Brando: Ellie?
Ellie: What. Do you want. I'm reading.
Brando: I brought you some sweets I had left. Would you like them?
Ellie: And why would I accept anything from you?
Brando: ... You know I could've killed you. After I had taken that man’s life I decided to spare you
Ellie: Because I got away, only to have the misfortune of running into you again
Brando: I could have gone after you but I didn't. I wasn't going to harm a woman who could barely walk... I didn't enjoy killing him. It was the only way I could get the job done and feed my family.
Ellie: You think he wasn't trying to feed his as well?
Brando: He was doing his job by trying to kill me. As was I. Do you think I'd just let myself die when I had my parents back home?
Ellie: You had the choice to use mercy, and you didn't. Were you in such a battle blind rage you just knew to strike?
Brando: Tell me Ellie. Would your friend have spared me if I was the one who was defeated? Would he have let me go after I was beaten?
Ellie: Ardal wouldn't have even raised his lance if you hadn't raised your sword first.
Brando: The question is would he let me live. Someone who would have rescued that woman and ruin his job and potentially his family. Would he not have plunged his lance into my heart if I lost?
Ellie: (getting audibly frustrated) And who is to say that woman had not been rescued already? Who is to say that?
Brando: I was told during that job that it would be a rescue mission. Save the woman and return her to where she belonged.
Ellie: There were many women in that village on that day, how were you so sure about her? Or did you just assume that any woman outside was an oddity? (huffs and attempts to calm) ... this conversation is over. I will have nothing more to do with you
Brando: ... Very well then. Good day Ellie.
Ellie: ...
 A SUPPORT
Ellie: Stupid...stupid....what does he know
Faceless: ?
Ellie: Wh-shit!
(Tome sounds)
Brando: Huh? What was that?
Ellie: (bumps into him as she’s trying to make distance) move it! You have approximately 4 seconds before i entrap you and leave for fodder
Brando: I'm not about to let you take that thing on your own!
(the Faceless catches up)
[Brando: You're not touching her! Haaah! (he swings his blade at it)
Ellie: (casts entrap, locking the faceless in place) get to it! (Fussing with her hip pouch to draw out the stronger tome
Brando: (pierces it with his sword) Gotcha you sack of- huh?!
(the affects of the tome wear of and the Faceless punches Brando into a tree)
Brando: Gaaah! *cough* Well there goes that idea
Ellie: Odds bobs the gods- (hurries over and readies the tome) Now be HAVE!!
(the Faceless falls)
Brando: Your pretty good Ellie... Don't mind me, just some broken bones, that's all.
Ellie: (heaving deep breaths) Shut up and let me catch my wind.... (pulls out her trusty psychic stave and casts it, helping him up when she’s less grumpy) It’ll hold you over, come on.
Brando: And here I was thinking you hated me, hehe...
Ellie: I would rather not have become Faceless food, or been executed for leaving you to die you dolt. Stop dragging your feet, I want to get back to my books
Brando: Huh... I knew there was a reason I didn't go after you those years back. It was so I could meet you again... Try to make amends...
Ellie: ...Less talking more walking.
 S SUPPORT
Brando: Hey there Ellie. Brought some sweets for you to try out. *he comes in with three packages*
Ellie: Good afternoon, Brando. *shuts her book and reaches out a hand* What are todays flavors?
Brando: Hm? You used my name... Well that's a surprise.
Ellie: No I didn't, you were hearing things.
Brando: Well today I have something for you. I'll give you these boxes one at a time and you tell me if you like them.
*he hands her the first box. In it there's a piece of cherry pie*
Ellie: oh! Cherry, I haven’t had it in a while, and the lattice is so delicately done... (purrs but totally denies purring as she takes the fork to eat the tiny piece
Brando: I'm glad you love it. Next up is this one.
*the second box holds a piece of cheesecake*
Ellie: well isn’t this a surprise, I heard this was hard to make... It’s delicious…
Brando: ... The last one... w-well... Here you go...
*the final box has little weight when Ellie holds it*
Ellie: ...?  *confusion, both as to why brando hadn’t introduced it and why it’s so light* Is it a macaroon?
Brando: ...
*when Ellie opens the box it reveals a golden ring with a jewel in the center*
Ellie: *surprise, looking from him to the box* I... Hey...is this a joke..?
Brando: No... Ellie. I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.
Ellie: I...
*blushes hard*
Brando: I love you. When I said, there was a reason I knew we'd meet again... It was because I knew that after seeing you again that I wanted to be with you. I wanted to protect you from anything that comes your way. I'll respect whatever answer you give me but... Ellie? Will you marry me?
Ellie: *flustered, holds her tome closer* I can protect myself well enough but *a small smile forms on her face, extending her hand* A partner wouldn’t be too far out of the question. I do need someone to watch my back
Brando: *blushes and smiles* S-So... You'll be my wife?!
Ellie: *reaches over and paps his nose* It’s a yes you silly dolt. *hooks a finger in his collar to draw him in for a small kiss*
Brando: ... *begins to tear up while smiling* Ellie... Thank you... I promise to be by your side for the rest of my life.
Ellie: *hugs him* Dry your eyes before you make me cry too...

Friday Finds & Reader Recommendations – 04-24-2020
Good morning and HAPPY FRIDAY!!! I hope we all have a cozy and wonderful weekend loaded in reading some seriously great books!! Speaking of which…
I’m already almost finished a book I just started a day ago and I LOVE IT!!!!! HOLY. MOLY. It’s the first part of a duet and the next one is coming out in a couple of weeks and I’m so relieved because I know the end of this one will make me crazy. LOL!!! I think I may have just found a new favorite author, and my review will be up this weekend.
In the meantime…
TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE FOUND FOR THE WEEKEND  !!
STILL ON ➔➔➔ TWO MONTHS FREE KINDLE UNLIMITED DEAL!!! <— If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s your chance. WE ARE LOVING IT! And it’s still going on through the end of April!
And…
So, That Got Weird by Amelia Kingston <—THE AWKWARD GIRL & THE JOCK ALERT!! Ashley loved it so much that she read it again! “…As the reigning campus sex god, he has the playboy act down pat. But underneath those six-pack abs beats a broken heart. He doesn’t trust people and he sure as hell doesn’t believe in love. The odd couple strike a deal. Four weeks of & “tutoring” for five thousand dollars…”
I reread ‘So, That Got Weird’ by Amelia Kingston and that was a fun time – it has the same vibe as Elle Kennedy or Maya Hughes’ books (which I’m a huge fan of).
Third Life by Noelle Adams <—LIVE!! AGE GAP OLDER MAN/YOUNGER WOMAN ALERT!! She only knows his first name but… “...he keeps asking me to meet him all over the world, and I keep saying yes. …I don’t know anything about him except his first name. That’s the way he likes it. He’s too old for me, and he’s hiding secrets, but I’m not going to be able to keep my heart out of it for long…“
Detained by Ainslie Paton <— MONY LOVED THIS ONE!
Mony: I finished Detained by Ainslie Paton, Aussie author. Really loved it!
First chapters – Mystery Guy & female reporter stuck in a Shanghai airport detention room – clever & hot. Characters “real”, dialogue tight – kind of book I like. Also, story unusual & set in China & AUS. Bit too long at end but I wanted to read it in one shot. Love finding books that punch their weight above their GR rating.
This was one of Ann’s “personal 5-star lose all track of time and reality books.”
Master of Salt & Bones by Keri Lake <— LIVE!!! DARK ROMANCE ALERT!!! P.S. I love this author!! “…When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He’d ride up on his white steed and break the curse I’ve been fated to carry since the day I was born. Funny how things changed over time. How the fairy tale twisted into something far more crooked, darker than I ever imagined. In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was. Lucian Blackthorne is as cursed as I am, and equally shunned by the locals…”
Killian by Ryan Michele <— LIVE!!!
Kitty Valentine Dates a Billionaire by Jillian Dodd <— LIVE!!! JILLIAN DODD ALERT!!
Falling North: A Turner Artist Rocker Novel (The Turner Artist Rocker Series Book 2) by Alyson Santos <— LIVE!!
The Devil in Apartment 13 by Tiana Laveen <— MODERN-DAY URBAN GENIE/JINN IS HER NEW NEIGHBOR… and he wants to make her his mate! “…Vivian Carver believes her name is synonymous with bad luck. She’s a bartender living smack dab in the middle of NYC and has had it up to here with entitled tourists, an annoying roommate and just barely surviving. She’s forced to move into a cheaper apartment, and with it comes a seedy landlord, drippy faucets and a peculiar stranger in apartment 13.  Shahzad has pulled all the stops to get to know Ms. Vivian Carver, someone who in no shape, form or fashion understands her full potential…”
Beauty and the Rose: a Dark Romance by Stasia Black & Lee Savino <— LIVE!! TRILOGY CONCLUSION ALERT!!
Don’t Love Me (My Secret Boyfriend Book 1) by S. Doyle <— HE TOLD HER NOT TO… “…The state took me away from my mother when was I twelve and sent me to live with an uncle, who worked on some fancy estate.  That’s when I met Ash, she was ten and the daughter of the man who owned the estate. She thought I would be her new best friend but I only wanted to be left alone. For years she was always there, always annoying me, always wanting more from me. But our roles were clear. She was the princess and I was the chauffeur’s charity case.  I told her not to fall in love with me…she didn’t listen…”
Dark Protectors Bundle: 3 Stories by Rebecca Zanetti by Rebecca Zanetti <— REBECCA ZANETTI BOOK BUNDLE BARGAIN ALERT! “…From New York Times bestselling author, Rebecca Zanetti, comes three stories in her Dark Protectors-Reese Family series… **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**
The Danger You Know by Lily White <— LILY WHITE’S LATEST DARK READ ALERT!! HE’S HER STALKER…“…I pursue her despite the wedding bells that rang for another, only I can see how she is drowning beneath mediocrity. How many times must I remind her? It can’t matter that I am the person who ruined her life. The man who killed her father. The constant shadow that watches her sleep. The lover who prefers dirty alleyways to freshly laundered sheets. She’s mine. Always has been…”
Michaela: Read this today and loved it!
Michele: I LOVE Lily and Dark reads are still my favorite!!  thank you!!!
Tori: I’ve been binge-reading some Lily White lately! Omgah! Just finished The Vanity of Roses and started Wishing Well last night! I guess this one will be next. Seriously, one of my new favorite authors! ♡♡♡
The Prince and the Pawn (When Rivals Play Book 4) by B.B. Reid <— SERIES FINALE!!! BULLY BOOK ALERT! “...They were wrong for each other from the start. The jock and the nerd, what a cliché they made. He was the town prince, and she was a nobody. Tyra Bradley was invisible. That is until she told him he needed some manners, and so began their game of cat and mouse...”
Everything Girl by Emily Mayer <— MONY LOVED IT!! And was her message to the author about it (and the author replied).
Mony: Hi Emily,
Loved loved loved your book. Well written, quirky characters, and great book boyfriend…loved the Montana setting. Good job pacing the slow burn between Jack and Evelyn. A gem.
Hoping you’re thinking about writing a sequel about Ben. Fantastic character – came alive with his wit, charm and “manwhore struggles.” Just begging to be written! What do you think? Thanks!
Emily (the author): …I took a detour for book #2, but I am spending my quarantine with Ben! I couldn’t agree with you more. He definitely needed his own story. I am already a little bit in love with his story and can’t wait to share it with you!
To another reader: “still hoping for a May release date” ..
Jan: New Lucy Score coming out in a couple of days: By A Thread: A Grumpy Boss romcom. I like the grumpy boss trope.
Mony: I didn’t see that By A Thread was about a grumpy boss…one of my favourite tropes as well…
HEY SWEET TEA (The Way To A Man’s Heart Book 8) by Frankie Love <— LIVE!!
Don’t Go Stealing My Heart by Kelly Siskind <— LIVE!!
The Girl and the Stars (The Book of the Ice 1) by Mark Lawrence <— LIVE FANTASY ROMANCE ALERT!!!!! GORGEOUS COVER & TITLE!! “…To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is not the same.   Yaz’s difference tears her from the only life she’s ever known, away from her family, from the boy she thought she would spend her days with, and has to carve out a new path for herself in a world whose existence she never suspected...”
Pretty Things by Janelle Brown <— RECENT PSYCH-THRILLER RELEASE AND GUESS WHAT????
Nay: For anyone who likes book adaptations, I just saw Maryse’s FB post about Pretty Things by Janelle Brown, and when I went to add it to my tbr on GR, I saw that one of my friends had posted that Nicole Kidman is going to produce and star in the book’s adaptation as a streaming Amazon series.
Maryse: OOOOOH YAY!!!! I love that!! Though I’m going to read it first.  Thank you for that news, Nay!
Michele: Just finished Fixed on You series…..GREAT, love, mystery, heartbreak and well the end……it was the best bargain….
Cheryl: Hudson is a hot alpha guy who says right off the bat that he is incapable of love and combined with Alayna’s obsessive “love’ disorder, you just know a train wreck is coming.
Krisztina: I just finished the Fixed trilogy by Laurelin Paige. Hudson (the whole story from his point of view). I have to say that I was reading the 2nd half of Forever With You with tears in my eyes … now I am obsessed with Hudson Pierce
A Kiss to Tell by W. Winters <— SUPER-BARGAIN ALERT! HE WAS BAD NEWS & SHE WAS THE GIRL THAT DIDN’T BELONG… “...From the first time I saw him, Sebastian had a hard stare that pinned me in place. And years later, it hasn’t softened. We lived on the same street and went to the same school, although he was a year ahead.  Even so close, he was untouchable. He was bad news and I was the sad girl who didn’t belong. One night changed everything...”

Spend a few minutes Googling the phrase should I invest in real estate and it will quickly become clear that real estate investing is a great idea. What isnt so clear, though, is how to get started! Thats what this book will show you. Lou Brown bought his first piece of real estate in 1976 and never stopped. Over the years hes experienced more lessons from the school of hard knocks than he can count and has built a tremendously profitable real estate portfolio. Along the way, Lou discovered that he had a knack for structuring win-win deals, plus creating contracts and paperwork that gave him a competitive edge over other investors. In 1987 he began teaching others his proprietary method of investing, including the unique, proven Buy-Hold-Sell system he created the subject of this book.

The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee
Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee dazzled readers with his Pulitzer Prize-winning The Emperor of All Maladies in 2010. That achievement was evidently just a warm-up for his virtuoso performance in The Gene: An Intimate History, in which he braids science, history, and memoir into an epic with all the range and biblical thunder of Paradise Lost (The New York Times). In this biography Mukherjee brings to life the quest to understand human heredity and its surprising influence on our lives, personalities, identities, fates, and choices.
A River in Darkness: One Mans Escape from North Korea by Masaji Ishikawa
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian. In this memoir translated from the original Japanese, Ishikawa candidly recounts his tumultuous upbringing and the brutal thirty-six years he spent living under a crushing totalitarian regime, as well as the challenges he faced repatriating to Japan after barely escaping North Korea with his life. A River in Darkness is not only a shocking portrait of life inside the country but a testament to the dignityand indomitable natureof the human spirit.

When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean's feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once? How to Date Your Dragon by Molly Harper
The first book in Molly Harper's uproariously funny, sinfully sexy new Mystic Bayou series! Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay's career has taken a turn south. Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations. Mermaids and gator shifters swim in the bayou. Spirit bottles light the front porches after twilight. Dragons light the fires under crayfish pots. Jillian's first assignment for the League could be her last. Mystic Bayou is wary of outsiders, and she has difficulty getting locals to talk to her. And she can't get the gruff town sheriff, Bael Boone, off of her back or out of her mind. Bael is the finest male specimen she's seen in a long time, even though he might not be human. Soon their flirtation is hotter than a dragon's breath, which Bael just might turn out to be...

Play With Me by Kristen Proby
Will Montgomery is a successful professional football player and seemingly has it all. He’s not used to being told no, and certainly doesn’t take no for an answer. So when he turns his charms on his sister’s sexy rocker-chick friend Meg, he’s not only turned down, but met with open hostility, piquing his curiosity and libido. But she can’t deny the overwhelming attraction to the sexy, tattooed athlete, and when Will starts breaking down her defenses and grabs hold of her heart, will she be able to admit her feelings for him, or will her troubled past cause her to lose the first man she’s ever truly loved? Hands down, my favorite thing in the world is to score. Touchdowns.
Don't let the fact that I'm the leading pick in the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction fool you. These days, I'm only a player on the field. I've kept my pants zipped all season long -- and it has been long -- because nothing's more important than leading my team to victory every week. Except maybe escaping from the team owner's recently-widowed and handsy-as-hell sister who's dead set on winning more than a date with me.
Enter Violet and a well-placed Hail Mary.
She's my best friend's sister with a smile as sweet as cherry pie and a mind that runs quicker than the 40-yard-dash. After Violet saves the day with the highest bid, I don't even give her a two-minute warning before I kiss her in front of the whole crowd and then announce that she's my girlfriend. Which would be fine except my agent tells me we have to keep up the act while he's negotiating my contract. Violet takes one for the team and pretends to be mine, but our boyfriend-girlfriend scrimmage quickly turns into a full contact sport, and I want it to go into overtime. The problem is -- I've been riding the bench for years.
How can a guy like me, who finally has a chance to prove his worth on the field, convince the girl she’s most valuable to his heart?
MOST VALUABLE PLAYBOY is a brand new standalone sports romance written in the guy’s POV!

AAAH! I JUST LOVED THIS ONE. IT’S A MUST READ KIND OF BOOK!
Lauren has this perfect formula for her friends to lovers trope that makes it effortless to get lost in her stories. It’s so damn fun and easy. (Well for us… the hero has got to work for it don’t they? )
Cooper, oh you sexy, adorably sweet and fun hunk of man. He was pleasurable from the first page! His squad -a lovable bunch of characters and an all around fun bunch to be with.
Violet is more of the same. A strong female lead with the sweetest disposition. She was one of those heroines you like from the instant you meet her.
There were a few scenes ladies that will melt you to your seat. One particular time that had me fanning my face it was so damn hot! But honestly, this was just an amazing romance.
I cannot wait to see Jones fall!!! His book will be up next in Most Likely to Score.
Happy Reading~ Sherry

Always a bridesmaid.
No Action Armstrong.
Ball Cap Boy.
Mr. Clean.
The Unused Insurance Plan.
Oh wait. Here’s one more, a personal fave.
Best Butt in the NFL.
Those are just some of the nicknames I’ve been given in the last few years. They don’t bug me. Not one bit. They’ve all been true, especially that last one. You should see my ass. You can bounce a quarter off my cheeks.
Here’s the thing—when you spend the first three years of your career warming the bench for the best player in the league, you can’t get a chip on your shoulder. You have to stay sharp and be ready for that moment when you swap out a ball cap for a helmet and get your pants dirty.
My time has finally come this season, and so far, we’re winning.
But tonight isn’t about what happens between the opening kickoff and the end of the fourth quarter.
Tonight is about the one game I’ve always dominated.
For the last few years, I’ve been the highest ticket item in the players’ annual charity auction, and I can’t help enjoying that. Because the guy I’ve backed up has been called a lot of things—a legend, the greatest ever, a titan of the game—but the one I most enjoy is “second-best-looking quarterback on the Renegades.”
Hey, I didn’t give him that name. The media did, deciding the dude who play second-string—me—had a prettier face. Before this season, I’d seen a grand total of 120 minutes of playing time in my first three years, but I’ve taken home the top honors in the charity auction, where some of the loveliest ladies come to bid on the players they want to take out for a night on the town.
Ah, the memories of those dates have warmed my heart, and other parts, on the sidelines when the games were dull. Evenings in limos, testing the strength of the leather backseat, nights in hotels that lasted way past dawn, mutually and blissfully ignoring the no physical contact between the winner and the player rule.
Yeah, I’ve enjoyed the fuck out of being paraded on stage in front of hundreds of women, their slender arms lifted in the air, raising their bids higher on me than all the other guys. It’s been my one chance to shine, even to stand out.
Those days are behind me, though, now that I’m finally leading the team down the field every single Sunday. I still expect to rake in top dollar for the charity I gladly support, but this time, I won’t be living it up and letting loose after hours. I have a reputation to protect, and a season on the line.
The trouble is, the woman who has her eyes on me at the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction wants my full enchilada, and it’s not on the menu anymore.
Guess that means it’s time to call an audible on the line of scrimmage.
