I Cannot Reach You - Kimi ni wa Todokanai REVIEWED
Tumblr media
This image perfectly captures how I feel about this show. You ready? I wasn't.
I Cannot Reach You
AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai
Japan 2023 - 8 eps 20 ea approx 2.5 hours
Themes, main tropes & archetypes: friends to lovers, tsundere/sunshine, self acceptance, self worth, high school BL, live action yaoi, soft romance, kindness
Rating? 10/10
Yeah, it happened again in 2023.
Tumblr media
Adapted from a manga.
The moment I finished binging this show I was thinking about writing about it and re-watching it. This is a sure sign that I adored a piece of media.
This is a wonderful BL.
Truly well executed, with smooth filming and lovely acting, both of a simplistic style that felt slightly more Korean than it did Japanese. It reminded me a little bit of Seven Days and a little bit of Takara and Amagi, and since these are my two favorite high school JBLs obviously I was bound to adore ICRY.
But what it reminded me of more than anything was Cherry Blossoms After Winter.
Odd for JBL and KBL to be so closely linked.
Like CBAW show, ICRY is classic live action yaoi.
Like the MOST classic of CLASSIC.
Tumblr media
All the JBL tropes. I mean look at that image above? It's rooftop assignation, kabedon, and a handhold ALL AT ONCE.
There was also multiple runnings of the gays, surprise kisses (one on a bridge), and shoulder leans.
Tumblr media
There is even a “seme looses control to desire” scene which leads to dub con. There is an abject apology after but still - you’ve been warned.
The premise is: smart sporty hot (and hella gay) Yamato has a long standing crush on his silly sunshine sweetheart bestie, Kakeru. Yamato is also stiff, self isolated, shy, and has only ever really managed to get along with Kakeru. I love this kind of pining seme so damn much, it probably biased me.
Tumblr media
Unlike most uke, Kakeru starts to slowly figure out that his best friend is in love with him by ep 2 (let the chaos bisexual identity crisis commence).
So do some of the friends around them.
The story thus revolves around Yamato trying to unsuccessfully suppress his desire, and Kakeru trying to figure out if he can return Yamato‘s affection.
Tumblr media
This biggest barrier is actually Kakeru's feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness (when compared to Yamato). But this is tempered by his genuine kindness which forces him into act with integrity around his dear friend's love and strive to fix everything (even himself) to prove worthy of it - whether he can ultimately return it or not.
Kakeru's struggles are pitted against Yamato‘s repressed need that keeps bubbling over and figuratively (sometimes literally) attacking Kakeru with romantic, emotional, and physical intensity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quick pitch:
This classic friends-to-lovers BL is everything Japan does best. Angsty. Emo. Aching. Driven by real thirst. Yamato is deeply in love with his childhood bestie, Kakeru, and has been for ages, unable to hide his ungainly damaging high school need. He wants Kakeru in every way possible and it oozes off of the screen. Kakeru is silly and a little simple, but not frenetic or overly camp about it. He is earnest, and genuinely wants to keep Yamato in his life which means giving a romance (and gayness) a fair chance. We watch him realize his affection and what form it can take in a truly authentic way. This show was impossibly kind to both of its lead characters and I felt almost honored that I got to watch something so lovely and rare play out on my screen.
Tumblr media
I’m not gonna lie, I dithered over whether to give this a 10/10 and nearly didn’t. But there is nothing wrong with it AS A BL.
And it's so GOOD to ALL of its characters and they are so good to each other. It's quiet and because of its goodness it will get overlooked, but I LOVED IT.
It's not one of those that BL outsiders will get and you must like Japan's style to enjoy it. But I'm in it. It's for me.
What am I hung up over? Even the kisses are good.
10/10
I CAN'T RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY ENOUGH
Tumblr media
Welcome to a very elite club. I gotta change all my best of lists now.
I am sorry to tell you how difficult this show is to get hold of. It deserves a much wider distribution. As of Nov 2023 I do not know where to legally find it internationally with eng subs. Please check the comments for updates.
It's on Netflix in some countries!
Try to find it, you won't regret it.

---- NINE PEOPLE I'D LIKE TO KNOW BETTER!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐑(𝐒): Black, red, green and greys! 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑(𝐒): I follow Min on the 'fruits' thing, there's nothing like the flavor of a nice ripe nectarine or peach, or cantaloupe melon or cherries!! God, cherries, I want some now. I also am (to be honest) an absolute nut for chocolate, which I think I haven't kept a secret here so far whatsoever. But dark chocolate with praliné filling? God, my mouth is watering at the mere thought. 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂: I like so many artists, but a lot of consistent ones that I keep going back to are the classic oldies (Presley, Beatles, Sinatra), or your 80/90s classics. Beyond that, I will always go back to Abel Korzeniowski, Sleeping at Last, Smash into Pieces (thank you, Min)— uh, who else, I know I always forget ones here, ah, I'll 100% admit that I'm a Bruno Mars fan (Silk Sonic, hello?) This is one of those where I can't really narrow it down, I just let Youtube autoplay and I come across many gems, you know? 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄(𝐒): Mary Poppins. It's a film that's very near and dear to me and this answer seems to always surprise people, but I don't think it'll ever change at this point. It just hits me with a sense of magic that nothing else could ever do. And while I don't seek to 'be drawn back into my childhood', I like that this... does just that. I feel like whenever I watch it (and I don't too often), I gain more appreciation for it. Also, the music in it remains unparalleled (the moment when Mr. Banks walks to the bank, that instrumental? Favorite of all time, I think). 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒: Seinfeld, Friends, I enjoy the good old-school comedy shows. 𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆: Minefields, by Faouzia & John Legend. 𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒: An episode of Seinfeld has been playing every morning when I'm home as of late, it's been absolutely wonderful. I love this cast so much. 𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄: The Joker, it came recommended for a specific mood! It's a good film. 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆: I haven't picked it up in forever, because sitting down to read hasn't been a common thing for me lately (and also, I'm not quite prepared to head back into Warcraft lore quite yet, but the Warcraft: War of the Ancients trilogy by Richard A. Knaak. 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍: Work preparation for Wednesday, last work day before Winter break! I'd love to work on replies, though. But life is insane at present and because I've coughed so much because of bronchitis/etc. etc., I think I tore a ligament. 😭

About the books 📚:
Isabel Allende is my favorite author. I read "The city of beasts" when I was 13 and fell in love with her writing. It is part of a trilogy (Memories of the Eagle and the Jaguar) which I absolutely reccomend if you enjoy magical realism, the literary genre that she has mastered to perfection. Her first novel, "The House of the Spirits", it's a great example of that. It's very reminiscent of "100 years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez. They both follow the story of a Latin-American family across generations, and they are so whimsical but at the same time incredibly raw when depicting reality. Although it is not considered a trilogy, "Daughter of Fortune" and "Portrait in Sepia" both include characters from "The House of the Spirits", and to this day they are my favorite books from her.
José Saramago won a Nobel Prize for a reason. "Death at Intervals" (pictured aboved), "Blindness" (which has a great film adaptation) and the sequel "Essay on Lucidity" are all amazing philosophical exercises that start with a very simple premise, respectively "what if people stopped dying?", "what if everyone turned blind?" and "what if everyone casted blank votes?". And the results are absolutely astounding. He never names his characters, nor he specifies in which country the action takes place (although we can tell it's Portugal), so that we can focus solely on the actions of the characters when faced with these dillemas. I couldn't reccomend them enough. I've read his books in Portuguese, but I'm confident the English translation does them justice.
Patrick Süskind isn't an author I know well, but "Perfume" is certainly one of the most memorable books I've ever read. The descriptions of the visuals and smells of 18th century Paris are so vivid that you feel like you're really there. You get inside the mind of the murderer, and you can understand, in a twisted way, how he can turn death into something so beautiful. And the ending of the book, my God! I couldn't forget it even if I tried. It's the culmination of his character, and it shows you what he considers to be the true meaning of love. It also has a film adaptation.
About the movies 📽️:
"The Little Mermaid" and "Barbie in the Princess and the Pauper" are self-explanatory, absolute animated classics from my childhood.
"The Secret Garden" (In Portuguese, "O Jardim Secreto", picture I took of my VHS) is based on the novel with the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I watched this movie compulsively when I was little. The songs were amazing, and it was actually scary in some parts. The ending is slightly different than the novel, and surprisingly I enjoyed the movie a lot more! Which literally never happens. So yeah, if you somehow find this specific version of the movie on the internet I definitely reccomend a watch. It holds up very well even as an adult (also much better than the live-action).
About the songs 🎶:
I don't know if you could tell, but Florence + the Machine is my favorite singer, since I was 11. She had one album that I listened on repeat. They were the only songs on my old MP3 player. To this day, I have her entire discography saved on my phone, so I can listen to it even without internet.
"Between Two Lungs" is from the first album, "Lungs", and it makes me want to run into the woods and scream my lungs out. "Shake It Out" is from the second album, "Ceremonials" (my favorite), and it is very dear to my heart, since I've sang it in two school competitions already (with 9 years in between the two).
"King" is from the fifth album, "Dance Fever", and it did things to me. "I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King." My aroace heart loved the song. Even though I know the original interpretation was an argument between two lovers, I also read it as an act of defiance to your parents, your loved ones and to the society in general that wants to shove into the role of what a woman has to be. But I don't want to be a mother or a bride. I want to take control of my own life. I want to be King. On YouTube, there's also a poem version that is equally beautiful.
I'm tagging @portgas-d-ani @lorillee @alwayshasacold @caseyd1a @tinycurlyfry @vgprincess @tevali @zhabk4 and anyone who wants to participate!
I've spent more time answering this than I thought I would, but you don't actually have to explain your choices, I did it of my own volition! You can just post the pictures >.<

It's time to talk about the greatest love confession in all of literature (courtesy of David Copperfield) 💘
Tumblr media
(A/N: Look at them folks! True love right there!💕)
Hello friends, I am working on an ask in which this suddenly became relevant (I promise it's not just completely random😅) so I feel that the time has come to discuss the greatest, most romantic, and most swoon-worthy love confession in all of literary history! (In my personal opinion anyway).
It is from a very old and criminally underrated book titled The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery most commonly referred to as just David Copperfield which was published in 1850 and written by classic novelist Charles Dickens (who is probably most famous for writing A Christmas Carol). It is not a romance novel (but it does have a romance subplot), so it is generally not discussed when talking about the greatest love confessions in literature. Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to make a big long meta post about it. Ramblings below the cut!
(Warnings: Spoilers ahead for David Copperfield which was published in 1850. It also has a few great filmed adaptations including an excellent BBC one from 1999 with Maggie Smith, and a new one (2019) with Dev Patel that gets so many extra kudos for cutting out most of the infuriating love triangle and making David Copperfield less oblivious. Power move! But that did change this confession sequence in the movie so I suppose that's a downside but I digress...Some spoilers for the 2019 movie below as well)
David Copperfield is not a romance novel by any means, but there is a romance subplot and a positively swoon-worthy love confession at the end of this book in which the main character, David Copperfield, finally expresses his love to Agnes Wickfield who has been his best friend and has stood by his side since childhood and who we (as the reader) know has always been obviously, desperately in love with him. Unfortunately, David Copperfield is a dumbbell (I say with the utmost affection) and one of the most oblivious fictional men of all time (My sisters and I like to call him the "OG Oblivious Fictional Man," and he is the standard to which we compare all other oblivious fictional men. To this day we have only found nine (9) fictional men we consider more oblivious than him but that is another story).
Tumblr media
David doesn't know how he feels about Agnes for literally around 700 pages which span decades of his life, and then when finally confronted with the possibility that he could have romantic feelings for her, he freaks out and runs away to go on a soul-searching journey in the mountains. He eventually comes to terms to with the fact that he loves her and then proceeds to freak out that she could never return his affections...
Tumblr media
Anyway...bless David--he goes to visit her several times trying to pluck up the nerve to confess. Agnes meanwhile is trying to guard her heart from yet from another rejection. David, for his credit, picks up on her hesitation (progress!) and believes she has "a secret" though he doesn't quite put all the pieces together. He has some really incredible lines here one of my favorites of which is:
"My dearest girl, dearer to me than anything in life, if you are unhappy, let me share your unhappiness. If you are in need of help or counsel, let me try to give it to you. If you have indeed a burden on your heart, let me try to lighten in."
But Agnes has literally been "sister-zoned" (as in "you're like a sister to me" which is beyond friend-zoned) for 700 pages and even completely rejected for another woman, the nice but completely airheaded Dora who has since died (A/N: in the 2019 movie, Dora lives but David dumps her because they are incompatible and he actually loves Agnes which is what he should have done in the book). Anyway, after all of that, Agnes can't even allow herself to hope that her romantic feelings for David are finally being returned. She says, "If I have any secret, it is--no new one; and is--not what you suppose. I cannot reveal it or divide it. It has long been mine and must remain mine."
David starts to connect the dots (FINALLY) and confesses his love to her even though he swears up and down that he "thought that nothing could have wrestled this confession from [him]." He has quite the speech (which I won't type out completely here), but it ends:
"I went away, dear Agnes, loving you. I stayed away, loving you. I returned home, loving you!"
I am sorry to have to tell you all that even after all of that, hopelessly oblivious David is still beyond nervous and concerned that Agnes does not return his affections. But this, my friends, is where we get to the pinnacle, the end-all-be-all moment of the most swoony-worthy confession in all of literary history. Agnes who has quietly, unquestioningly, and unrequitedly loved David from their childhood sees all of his fears and insecurities in having confessed to her and tells him there is "one thing [she] must say." David is so nervous that he is about to get rejected and timidly asks her what it is not even daring to hope that she is about to return his affections but...
"She laid her gentle hands upon [his] shoulders, and looked calmly in [his] eyes.
'Do you know, yet what it is?'
'I am afraid to speculate on what it is. Tell me, my dear.'
'I have loved you all my life!'"
And that is how it is done, friends! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Tumblr media
(A/N: I found all these great gifs from the 2019 movie, and I got so excited about including them😅)

The hermit and the hanged man for tarot asks 😊
HI <3
Just to let you know I got your ask about the Make em swoon prompts: "hi" *raspy voice* and I am working on that 👀
the hermit: what is your favorite soda pop?
Hmmm, either Dr Pepper or this company called Golden Circle 'Golden Pash' flavour.
the hanged man: favorite movie soundtrack?
Ohhh this is such a me question! And I can't just choose one!
Any Star Wars movie/tv show but I love Across the Stars and god anything from Rogue one but Jyn Erso & Hope Suite?!?! How they comined Jyn's theme and the Hope theme?!?! magical. Also just anything created for the Mandalorian- Ludwig Goranasson is a genius. Lastly Han Solo and the Princess?? Iconic.
Rocketman- I love everything about this soundtrack ugh- how they used Elton's songs to help carry the narrative and themes of the film?! How they integrated the musical moments with the story, I just love it. I would list some favourites but I would list the whole soundtrack.
LOTR- literally the soundtrack of my childhood (along with Star Wars) Rivendell - how its starts with The Shire in a different key and the transforms into this etherial music uggghhhh. For Frodo in return of the king??? AND the sacrifice of Faramir with Billy Boyd singing????
Do Revenge- completely different vibes but every song on this soundtrack is a banger and fits the vibes of this movie so goddamn well. Move by TOBi, I Eat Boys by Chloe Moriondo, Bitch by Meredith Brooks and Celebrity Skin by Hole just to name a few of the bangers.
Top Gun Maverick- So good, brings back some of the classic songs from the OG but gives us I Ain't Worried by OneRepublic and Miles Teller singing Great Balls of Fire (which was my top song on Spotify Wrapped last year) soo good.
Honourable mentions: Dune, Arrival, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Someone Great, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman into the Spider-verse, How to Train a Dragon, Baby Driver. The Chronicles of Narnia.
Also some TV Shows: Sense8, Heartstopper, Our Flag Means Death, Julie and the Phantoms.
If you ever want a quick answer out of me don't ask a question about films/tv shows, I can ramble about them for days.
Thanks for your ask!!!

My opinions on Disney and non-Disney movies (+ my opinion on the new Mario movie)
Okay I don't know if this is too early or too late to give my opinions but I just wanted to say, since I put out an instagram live and also got caught up since I went to see the new Super Mario movie yesterday. If you want to read all this, feel free to chat with me in the comments section and give me your opinions, I'm here for it!
As someone who enjoys animated kids movies, and hates adult movies with a lot of action and violence, I'm sorry to say that I'm not much of a Disney fan, and didn't have the Disney childhood that everyone else did. I'm 20, and the first Disney movie I watched was Up, so I was probably about 7 or 8 when it came out. As a kid I mostly watched Disney Channel, Disney Junior/Playhouse, and Disney X.D. I grew up in America so we had other channels like Sprout and Qubo too. I didn't grow up on classic Disney movies, in fact, I actually hate a lot of them, and notice a lot of problematic things about them that someone who grew up with them might not notice. There are some of the older movies I like, but it's not most. I'm here to bring up the topic of Disney and how I feel about them, and i feel like they're a very greedy company. I mean, they've been greedy for like 100 years, they are still very greedy more than ever.
Disney is finally getting what they deserve after all these years, with these lesser known companies starting to become the big shots now! Do I feel bad for Disney? NO! They're doing this to themselves. I don't like to hate too much on Strangeworld, even though in my opinion, it looked like a really dumb movie. I don't want to hate on it because unlike all these live action remakes that they're crapping out one after another, Strangeworld was it's own story. Would I ever watch Strangeworld? NEVER! I'm just happy that these underrated companies like DreamWorks, Illumination, Sony, and Aardman are given a chance to shine for once! I thought that new Super Mario Bros and Puss in Boots Last Wish were the two best movies of 2023! I also saw an animated German-British film called "The Amazing Maurice" and I enjoyed it but not as much as the other two. For years, I've only been going to non-Disney movies in theaters (the last Disney movie I saw in theaters was either Zootopia or Moana, can't remember) and my mom and I were always really pleased with them. I'm sure most of you have never heard of Artic Dogs or Rock Dog, but those are incredible and underrated movies for the whole family. My mom and I especially enjoyed the first Sing movie by llumination, and Buster was our favorite! Sing 2 was even better and I wish I could have seen it in theaters with her before she passed. I'm really happy for Illumination and that they're branding is not just a bunch of silly singing minions, but they are now a confident company that creates their own characters as well as use old ones too. I mean, Disney has branded off recycling 200 year old fairytales, and then later on, books that they could buy the stories from. Walt Disney literally tried to buy the Moomins from Tove Jansson, but Tove was smarter than that! And if you think Toy Story was original, might I remind you that the "Talking toys" concept was around for almost 100 years before the movie came out? I'm really happy for both DreamWorks and Illumination that they have been getting so much admiration lately!
Another thing I wanted to discuss was the new Illumination movie, "Migration" and how it looks a lot like Duck Duck Goose, which is another really underrated movie. However, I respect Illumination for creating a completely different story and completely different characters. Duck Duck Goose is an underrated masterpiece by Origin Pictures, that Netflix took credit for, and it was never released in theaters. It deserved so much better, along with Wish Dragon which was in the same boat. I still hope Migration does well, because it looks amazing! As someone who's always loved ducks, and grew up in the northeastern part of the U.S, there's something about the scenery in the trailer that made me feel nostalgic. I know the scenery looked really similar to Duck Duck Goose, which also makes me feel nostalgic even though Duck Duck Goose does take place in China, which I've never been too. (The scenery is a bit different if you look closely, but not that much). Again, I hope to see Migration do really well.
To finish things off, I'll make another post, another time, with my top 20 underrated Non-Disney family animated movies but I think you all want to hear my opinions on the new Super Mario movie! I loved it! 9/10, and the "Peaches peaches" song was the best part! The Puss in Boots one was incredible too, and 10/10 for that one! Bowser and Jack Horner are actually really well written villains, evil and funny! (Bowser a bit more since he had a soft side, where as Jack Horner was just a dumb jerk). I thought that Puss in Boots Last Wish deserved to beat Disney, along with this new Mario one! They both deserve it!
If you learned anything from this crazy essay, just remember that not all movies have to be made by what was always considered "The best" and that smaller companies will often surprise you!

Pressed flowers, pearl, yearning and candle! Sorry if it's too much questiond you can answer anything you like!
Oh no it's not too much 💖
Pressed flowers ~ Share a poem you love? - I gotta admit it right here: I'm not someone who's terribly into poetry (even if my father was). So I can't give any good examples, I'm sorry. 🙈
Pearl ~ Have you ever experienced a ‘movie-like’ moment in your life? - Sort of. There were a couple of occasions in my teens when I've ran away and hitchhiked to the nearest town. The first time happened at a local festival; the other time was when I was in a hospital. I was aged fifteen both times. 🙈 I'm sure there were more moments like that, I just can't remember them.
Yearning ~ A song you like in a language you don’t speak?
youtube
Manazashi by Honey L Days. I used to know how to sing this song. It also used to make me cry because I loved this show and it got very emotional at times. ;(
Candle ~ Fictional character from classic literature you identify with? - I must admit that while I actually have a few classic literal pieces on my bookshelf (Moby Dick, A Picture of Dorian Gray, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Watership Down, and a few books from Stephen King), I haven't been able to finish many of them because of my poor concentration these days. 🙈 I really do love the story behind The Secret Garden though (the film version is one of my childhood favorites). While I can't entirely relate to Mary's character at all times, I can understand and sympathize with her.

12,13, 14, 17, 18, 20, 21,27 for Kira, Kane, Kyleigh & Arnold (yes Im intreuppting this guys work again he can suck it up or stay mad :P ) & 11 for Kira & Kyleigh sorry for the long ask hehe :D
Wow big ask, thanks hun really enjoyed doing this.
What’s their ideal vacation like?
Kira: right now, Sulani without doubt. I need somewhere warm and relaxing. Sulani is literally it, in a word. One of my new friends was there recently I think doing some calendar photoshoot thing. And Francine's mom moved there to be with some island dude she met like 20 years ago or whatevs.
Kane: I think my ideal vacation is just somewhere with house full of babes.
Kyleigh: My travel options are limited, due to my uh... skin condition and dietary requirements. But basically, going somewhere where the Order of the Sun are not would be fantastic.
Arnold: What?! More of these fuckin' questions? *big sigh* oh fuck me... right, fuck... Vacation. Whatever, I'm a billionaire's son I can go wherever the fuck I like, luxury yacht, luxury jet. It don't matter. Fact is my ideal vacation changes and I can choose whatever I want.
What is/was/will be their college major?
Kira: I didn't get to go to college, on account of a shit childhood *looks at Kyleigh*. I would have liked to go. But now I got to help this dickhead with his club. *thumbs to Kane*
Kane: College is for nerds and jocks. Fuck that.
Arnold: I agree with Kane, fuck that. Besides, I don't like teachers, and I especially don't like it when people give me deadlines or try telling me what to do...
Kyleigh: Well, I didn't go to college but Lyra did, so I guess technically I did too, and I, that is, she, got a degree in Literature.
What’s their favorite book genre, if they enjoy reading at all?
Kira: I don't really do reading. Unless its in the drinks recipe book. I love drinking. Sobriety is overrated
Kane: I wait for the movie or the TV show.
Arnold: Reading is a pursuit for those with no life and no resources either, so they can pretend to be somewhere else or somebody else to escape their drab dreary dull little lives... its quite pathetic really.
Kyleigh: I like some of the classics from days gone by, Id say Jules Verne is my favourite. Bram Stoker's dracula is great, and has a special little meaning for me. Also the book Jaws is good too, the film is good too but the book is great also.
What’s the most ridiculous thing they’ve ever spent money on?
Kira: Um... probably that fuckin' pressure cooker. I used it like two times and now its just there gathering dust in the apartment.
Kane: A strip club? Does that count?
Arnold: I spend so much money I don't bother to itemize ever little bit. Because, you know, I'm not poor.
Kyleigh: Right now I'd say getting all these tattoos plastered all over me was the most ridiculous thing I've spent money on.
What’s their dream job?
Kira: My dream job, well I wanted to be a doctor of all things. But I doubt I could cut it. I drink, I smoke, I don't like reading, and I'm a bit impatient, all bad things when one wants to be a doctor.
Kane: I am literally living my dream job, right now.
Arnold: I don't work, I pay others. Fuckin' moron!
Kyleigh: I've never had one of my own. Lyra always wanted to be an archaeologist though... I can't say I would want that.
Who’s their go-to person for advice?
Kira: Karlie. No question. Sometimes, Francine, but mostly Karlie. Francine is too... uh, she's not like us.
Kane: I shall quote my cousin Guy for this one: "I talk to myself. Even I need expert advice occasionally."
Arnold: My father, he's the big boss, he knows the fuckin' score. I talk to him.
Kyleigh: I used to go to Lyra but uh... yeah, kind of made a mess of that. I still have Imani. I need to get her round soon for a catchup.
What’s one secret of theirs that could potentially ruin a relationship they have?
Kira: Erm... I ain't got any secrets. Open book me.
Kane: My lover she is the "smiley killer" so if that got out... I think It'd ruin a lot of things including a relationship.
Arnold: Well, I'm also fucking this other girl called Molly as well as Francine so there's that. Tell anybody about it, and you're fuckin' toast. You get me?
Kyleigh: I had a secret, and I revealed it, and I ruined my relationship with Lyra... So... yeah...
What’s their favorite genre of music?
Kane & Kira: Rock!
Arnold: Fuckin heavy metal man!
Kyleigh: Classical, I play the organ did you know. I love my own musics.
Who’s the most important person in their life?
Kyleigh: Elita is. She's the Chosen One and she's going to do wonderful good things, I know it. She needs me more than anybody.
Kira: Yeah, don't we know that. Elita can do no fucking wrong. Your other kids needed you too mom, but hey, as long as Elita is ok that's all that matters right? So the most important person in my life is my friend Karlie, and followed up by my new friend Adria. They're my bitches and we ride and die together.

Bullies. I can’t stand em. I’ve even BEEN one for a short period of time. Yep. Result of my parent’s divorce. The person I bullied is now a lifelong friend 🌟 We “bully” in our lives to assume some form of control. I’ve spent a lifetime doing my best to make sure no one in my presence is ever again bullied. It’s something that’s always driven me. Speaking of driving, Stephen King didn’t like bullies much either. So much so, he wrote about a car that got the ultimate revenge on bullies. It murdered them. Of course it has all the hot rod (literally lol) classic car tropes and teenage dynamics of the 50’s. Rebel youth. Shit we can forever relate to. However, in my opinion, Christine feels like it’s less about a killer car, and more about death. Death of your childhood. Death of your family. Death of innocence. After all, good art is about how we relate to it and what we take from it. This was also adapted into one of my absolute favorite Carpenter films. When this scene comes along… the raging inferno of “Christine”… stalking her owner’s bully down the highway at night… getting the ultimate revenge… well I think we can all relate to a time when we would have wanted to see that happen to our own “bully”. Too bad we didn’t all have a killer 1958 Plymouth Fury at our disposal 🔥😂🚗 “Her name’s Christine”. 5”x7”. Watercolor on paper. Super fun one to paint. Still available! #johncarpenterschristine #johncarpenterart #stephenking #stephenkingart #stephenkingfans #watercolorpainting #horrorart #archespaper #bullies #revenge #mopar #plymouthfury #arniecunningham #hotrod #classiccars (at Fort Lauderdale, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmdjVpIuRZv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

FOB Song Challenge Days 17-21
Tumblr media
Day Seventeen: Song you can relate to- Sunshine Riptide
tbqh i relate to almost every single song this band has ever made in some way or another. i especially relate to a lot of songs that i've used already--Disloyal Order, Sophomore Slump, Hum Hallelujah... the list goes on.
but. i am getting lyrics from this song tattooed on my body because i relate to it in terms what i have chosen on purpose rather than because something happened to me. "The world tried to burn all the mercy out of me but you know i wouldn't let it."
Day Eighteen: Fave featuring song- The Mighty Fall
When SRAR came out, this was one of my favorite songs on the album. all the songs were my favorite songs on the album, but this was one of the most favoritest. i love big sean's feature because it's different (and indicative of where the band goes in M A N I A and "Dear Future Self") and it's funny. FOB has so few straight up comical lyrics, and "Hell yeah I'm a dick girl--a-dic-ted to you!" is so funny. It's over the top and a little sleazy and clever and makes me laugh.
Shoutout to runner up "Just One Yesterday" for having some of the most metal lyrics of any FOB song
Day Nineteen: Song that pumps you up- My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark
the beat! the oh-whoa! the intensity--"a constellation of tears on your [BEAT BEAT] lashes/ burn everything you love then burn the [MATCH STRIKE] ashes"
"My childhood spat back out the monster that you see"--I have survived; i have been forged and i've already had everything taken form me so when i choose to burn it i have no fear; resilience looks like teeth and claws and walking into fire because you know you'll be remade
shoutouts to runners up "Saturday" and "Champion" for literally getting me through the toughest shit so far in 2022. "Two more weeks / my foot is in the door" and "if i can live through this / i can do anything" were lifesavers
Day Twenty: Song that reminds you of your teenage years-Sugar, We're Goin Down
ah, sitting in the passenger seat being driven to high school with this song on on my ipod (classic, but before there were different kinds of ipod to be classic or not--or maybe late enough that there were the first ipod nanos but i didn't have one of those) or on the radio again, because it was everywhere on the radio, and me trying to figure out why the fuck it felt so Important.
I knew i identified with the opening lines--"am i more than you bargained for yet/ i've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear/ cause that's just who i am this week" but-- "sleeping in and sleeping for the wrong team"?! "i'm watching you two from the closet"?! "isn't it messed up how i'm just dying to be him"?! i didn't have an original copy of FUCT but i'd seen the lyrics printed on my friend's copy--"wishing to be the friction in his jeans"-----
it's ok lil high school!me, you're queer and you just don't know it yet
Day Twenty-One: Song you would use to recommend FOB to others- Thnks Fr Th Mmrs
the real answer to this is that it depends on the music taste of whoever i'm talking to, since FOB has such range. but, with no context like that, i chose this because it feels like a Quintessential FOB song. it clearly has roots in (pop) punk and retains a lot of that sound and structure. but it also brings in strings and brass and does lots of fun things with dynamics and harmony and patrick's vocal range (patrick stump's lower register my beloved); it's drawing from a genre it refuses to be confined to. lyrically it is also quintessentially FOB: full of pop culture (mainly film) references, wordplay (i'm looking forward to the future but my eyesight is going bad), and the Pete Wentz Official Brand of Horniness Mixed With Queer Plausible Deniability (nobody can hear the quotes around "he tastes like you only sweeter"), and the title is also a Classic FOB Moment of subverting a thing they did that was Iconic as soon as Iconic became synonymous with Expected

Interviews:
Spend a couple seconds thinking of your top 5 movies that are either very impactful to you, or just describe who you are as a person. My top 5 movies that reflect me are Princess in the Frog, Home Alone, Spiderman: Homecoming, and the Little Mermaid (2023). As you can see all of mine are from Disney or Marvel. Any Disney princess movie was a staple of my childhood, I literally watched all the movies. Down below you can see me, and my cousins dressed in Disney/ Marvel in some way, which what was your favorite Halloween customer from your childhood? Even though I love the animated older Disney version movies, The Little Mermaid (2023) version is one of my favorites as I love how they took it from an animated film to live action. The singing and acting were amazing and couldn't have asked for better actors. My friends, brother, aunt, and my parents are all different influences that have shown me all different sorts of movies.
Tumblr media
My twin brother, Chaz, was someone who has been in my entire life, so I decided to interview him about this movie selection. Although we did grow up together both of are taste in movies is very different.  His top five are the Notebook, the Dark Knight, Fight Club, Star Wars- Revenge of the Sith, and Good will Hunting. He is very into the Adventure genre and loves the older 1990 style. He got this from my dad as he lives by these types of movies. Especially Star Wars my whole family is a big Disney and Marvel family, so that’s why he chooses the Star Wars movie and I choose mostly Disney movies. Down below is a picture of us one of the Star Wars rides at Hollywood studies. We take yearly trips to Disney with the whole family and make the best memoires, and I think that’s why were so fond to watching Disney movies.  The Notebook is also a good classic movie like Mean Girls, except Mean Girls is more comedy where the Notebook is more romance. When we grew up together our childhood consisted of a lot of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, so seeing each of us branch out into different movies showed us our different personalities and what we liked.
Tumblr media
The Next person I interviewed, who has a very different taste in movies than me was my suitemate, Madison. Her top 5 movies are White chicks, Insidious, Heredity, Dirty Dancing, and Magic Mike. Her movies are way more different than mine as she veers towards comedy and horror.  We watched all these movies last year and continue to watch them this year, as we are roommates again this year. She was introduced to these movies by her friends, and she just has a strong interest in horror and comedy movies. I do love horror movies, but I do get scared super easily. Each of my interviews are people I both have known, but we all have different taste in movies and its crazy how many movies there all in this world. This is what makes each person unique because nobody will ever have the same top 5 list of movies as anybody else.

the original ask had the heroin spelling which made me think of drugs vbgdgf help ;-; UMMM anyways my fave is definitely Princess Leia :3 idc that she wasn't technically the protagonist of the original SW trilogy vjfbgh I LOVE HER SO MUCH WAAAAAAAA 😭 but if you want my fave female protagonist thennnn it's a tie between Rey from the sequel trilogy and Wendy Christensen from Final Destination 3

OOOO there are so many movies that I watched because my parents (mainly dad) introduced me to 😭😭😭 like the reason I started watching franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, as well as war movies and many science fiction stuff, was because of him, and honestly that's one of the things I love about my dad 🥺 mom also introduced me to some movies, mainly Titanic (didn't like it that much ;-;), Love Actually and Romanian classics such as the Liceeni (lit. transl.: The Highschoolers) movies and Veronica, aka one of the movies that defined my childhood 🥰
63. Least favorite genre?
It used to be horror when I was younger, but in the recent years I've started to appreciate this genre a lil more 🥺 nowadays my least fave genre is those Western movies, idk I just never really enjoyed movies that were set in the Wild West 😭 oh and also shockumentaries aka mondo films ;-;

Chinese animation recommendations
Hello! Follower and fellow heritage Mandarin-speaker here.
This is re: the anon who asked about animation recs. Most of mine might be a bit outdated/juvenile because they're mostly things I watched growing up, but there's a few newer things in there too. The original answer already covers a lot of the classics (shoutout to my mans Pleasant Goat), so I'll try to suggest ones that haven't already been mentioned! Please also note that these will all be in Mandarin except for one of the movies.
Also, apologies in advance for the text dump. This grew from a bullet-pointed list into a monstrosity as I basically relived my childhood.
First, 2 Youtube links I'd like to recommend w/ regards to this topic:
Chinese Animation: In Search of a Style | Video Essay by Accented Cinema
This video mainly focuses on the history of animation in China, but it also is a great source of recommendations given how many titles he covers from the past to the present day.
DongHua Reviews
This is a channel that, as the name suggests, reviews donghua (or Chinese animation). He does a lot of recommendation videos, so you'll definitely be able to find a lot of good content there.
Now, onto my own favorites:
Movies:
The Legend of Hei (2019)
Trailer
A heartwarming story about a little cat spirit in a modern fantasy world. Hands down some of the best animation on this list, it's absolutely gorgeous to look at and the character designs are really cute too! It's also the prequel to a cartoon series, The Legend of Luoxiahei (Youtube link).
New Gods: Nezha Reborn (2021) (note: unrelated to the 2019 movie)
Trailer
Chinese mythology meets steampunk meets social commentary. This is a highly unique take on a classic story, and the animation looks awesome. Definitely recommend if you don't mind thirsting after animated characters ;) I believe a sequel is also in the works (?)
Any film/show by Shanghai Animation Film Studio
This is one of China's oldest and most famous animation studios. They produced the bulk of mainland China's classic animated works including Nezha Conquers the Dragon King, which was recced in the original answer. The video I linked from Accented Cinema does a great deep dive on their works, which are highly distinctive and incorporate many elements of traditional Chinese art. My personal favorites are Lotus Lantern (film) and Calabash Brothers (show).
No.7 Cherry Lane (2019)
Trailer
The only work in Cantonese on this list. Full disclaimer: I've never actually watched this one, but it's been on my watchlist for awhile now. The animation looks GORGEOUS. From its Wikipedia page:
"During the rise of the materialistic comfort of life in the 1960s, there emerges an undercurrent of danger in Hong Kong.
No.7 Cherry Lane tells the tale of Ziming, a Hong Kong University undergraduate, entangled between his amorous feelings for a self-exiled mother Mrs Yu from Taiwan in the White Terror period, and her beautiful daughter Meiling. He takes them to different movies and through a series of magical moments on the big screen, forbidden passions are revealed. And the era coincides with Hong Kong's turbulent times of 1967."
Shows (my favorite part because most of these were a huge part of my childhood):
Journey West (1998)
Unsubbed ver on Youtube
I grew up watching this series. I was obsessed with this series. I legitimately used every stick-shaped object in our house to mimic the weapon of the main character, Sun Wukong. To this day, the opening and closing OSTs are bops. Alright I'm done.
This series, as you might guess, is an adaption of the famous novel Journey West. Tl;dr: a monk and his 3 disciples make a pilgrimage and fight a lot of demons along the way, with the chief disciple Sun Wukong/the Monkey King as the main character. This story has been adapted and retold countless times over literal centuries, to give you some idea of its cultural impact. This particular version is very much aimed at children, but it still holds a special place in my heart.
The Legend of Nezha (2003)
Unsubbed ver on Youtube
Another gem from my childhood. This is another take on the classic Nezha legend (previously seen in my rec for the film Nezha Reborn), which tells the story of a young boy who fights the gods and also his dad. Again, the opening and closing OSTs are iconic, and the animation for this show has definitely held up to the test of time. If you ask anyone who grew up around this time in China, there's a good chance they've watched this show and stan its version of Nezha and/or its original character, the Dragon princess.
A Pigsy Falls from the Sky (2004)
Unsubbed ver on Youtube
Unfortunately, I can't find much English information on this show, but it's yet another relic of my days as a young whippersnapper. It essentially serves as a prequel to Journey West (unrelated to the other series I recommended) with original stories about what Pigsy, another disciple of monk Tang, was up to prior to joining the pilgrimage. It has a really playful tone, and I remember it being a lot of fun to watch.
Wanderings of Sanmao (2005)
Eng subbed ep 1 on Youtube
This is based on a famous comic series that has been around since the 1930s. Perhaps due to its notably more serious content, it's lesser-known outside of China, but I still think it's worth a watch. It tells the story of Sanmao, a boy who grows up in abject poverty, and takes place in 1930s Shanghai against the backdrop of the second Sino-Japanese war. The tone of this show is much darker than the other recs on this list, as it explores themes such as colonization, poverty, and war, all through the eyes of a young boy. (If I recall, the cartoon lightens this a bit.) I'm not sure how much of the cartoon is actually subbed, though.
I would also recommend the original comic, which is for the most part wordless and therefore is fairly accessible even to non-Chinese speakers.
Heaven Official's Blessing (2020)
trailer
A name off my to-watch list, as several friends have recommended this to me. This is based on a novel series by the same author (Mo Xiang Tong Xiu) who wrote Mo Dao Zu Shi, which The Untamed is based on. From what I've seen, the animation features a lot of beautiful people (hehe) and the show is super popular. If you're into BL, this is definitely a must-watch.
If you've made it this far, congrats — this pretty much wraps up my recommendation list for donghua (Chinese animated works). The industry as a whole has had a pretty unique development trajectory compared to its counterparts in other countries, and I believe you'll see that reflected in the works from different eras. Chinese animation has grown a LOT in recent years especially, with domestic studios producing works of higher and higher quality; here's to hoping they produce even more! In any case, apologies again for the wall of text, and hope this helps OP!

My favorite “abstract” monster movies/horror movies that feel like really good SCP’s and a non-spoiler note about each! Let me know any more along these lines! Some were your suggestions the last time I talked “anomaly horror movies” so thanks!!
Pontypool is based on a wildly different novel and a lot of people liked it more, but I actually found the movie more fun with its subtler and more focused story (basically just a small piece of the book) It is adjacent to, but is not a “zombie movie.”
Rubber is more comedy than anything else and has a strange meta angle some find pretentious. I just like that it’s about a murderous tire.
Absentia is a pretty harrowing film that involves missing children and pregnancy in its horror but also a very unique paranormal element for modern cinema.
Await Further Instructions is one I just saw weeks ago on Netflix and some people hate the tonal shift of the climax, the “silly” ending and the admittedly questionable “technology bad” kind of angle (edit: I was right the first time and that isn’t its message) but this is really one of my favorite monsters in a movie ever, and the whole thing is written just fun as hell to me.
Oculus is not about a “haunted” or “demonically possessed” mirror like some reviewers seem to think.
Autopsy of Jane Doe is technically about a classic kind of supernatural being but it’s presented in such a creative way.
In The Tall Grass is an adaptation of a King short story and “confusing” according to a lot of reviews. I did not find it confusing. I don’t think you will either? I think they just didn’t understand a movie where the antagonist is a phenomenon or location.
Possum is the least explicitly supernatural one here; the “creature” is symbolic and the real subject matter might be extremely disturbing for people who just want a spooky film.
1408 is another Stephen King adaptation and like Oculus I’ve seen reviewers who think it’s about a “haunting.” It isn’t, and the movie even says so.
Deep Dark is the closest thing in this list to just a literal “creature movie” but it’s a highly original entity who’s also just a delightful villainous character!
And FULL SPOILER synopsis for each if you want that!
Pontypool is about the English language itself becoming an infection, your vocabulary breaking down as you’re driven to a berserk state. Taking some dialog as canon and the book at face value, language itself has always been a metaphysical “organism” and now English in particular is trying to escape the confines of what it is. For this reason, infectees behave like zombies because they want to “chew through the mouth” of other people who are speaking.
Rubber has a tire just wake up one day for no reason and make things explode by shaking at them. A group of people lead by the film’s director follow the tire around and comment on events as if they’re over-analyzing an art piece.
Absentia never fully shows more than a hand and overall outline of its monsters, which are described as resembling silverfish but actually seem to be some kind of sadistic, ancient fae connected with an underpass.
Await Further Instructions is about a toxic family suddenly trapped in their home by a metal barrier and ordered around by emergency messages on their TV. Towards the end it turns out that television itself has gained awareness and wants humans to acknowledge it as master.
Oculus is about a mirror that can warp your perception of reality and has a staggeringly sick, sadistic will. A woman whose parents were killed by the mirror has devoted her life to studying it and setting up an elaborate, scientifically controlled system to finally document and destroy it.
Autopsy of Jane Doe is about an unidentified dead woman who does not seem to decay, and fights back against being examined and embalmed through manipulation of reality. She is revealed to have been executed centuries ago as a witch, but it’s implied there was nothing supernatural about her until her wrongful torture left a hatred that transcends death.
In The Tall Grass features a field that bends time and space in order to keep people trapped. The hub of the phenomenon is a massive “stone” (a brief, bizarre shot implies that it is something very different) that can invade the minds of victims and enslave them to the field’s survival.
Possum is about a man with a very, very creepy marionette puppet, and we see it move a few times, but it’s hard to say what’s real within the narrative of this movie, except that the man was a victim of childhood abuse and neither he nor the puppet are its antagonists.
1408 is in a similar vein to Oculus and Jane Doe; it’s a hotel room that can do whatever it wants with reality or its victim’s perception of reality, and it seems to have a limitless love of inflicting agony. I also like the short story just as much, and it has some moments I wish had translated to the film.
Deep Dark is about a cheap, filthy apartment where a long line of world-famous artists and inventors are revealed to have secretly found inspiration. When an unknown artist tries it for himself, he ends up in an unhealthy intimate relationship with something that inhabits the walls, speaks in a woman’s voice and provides him slimy pheromone-laced spores that intoxicate and charm other humans.

wait can u explain the "was that us or a movie" line that scene ALWAYS confused me idk what theyre trying to say/reference
yeah sure ! betty is asking about a childhood memory that jughead and archie bring up of going swimming and getting covered by leeches. betty's question draws attention to the fact that the same thing happens in a movie -- the 1986 film stand by me, which was based on the 1982 stephen king horror novel the body. that scene is one of two stand by me references in season 3 -- the shot of archie and jughead walking down the train tracks in a later episode is soundtracked with the same song that accompanies a train track scene in stand by me. so that's the reference ! it's one of my favorite short scenes because despite the fact that riverdale is a collage of classic cinema and theater references, this is one of the first times that a character seems to earnestly confuse real life with big screen. in earlier seasons, characters will reference movies or characters by name, but stand by me is never name-dropped, because to archie, betty, and jughead, it's not a movie; it's their childhood. for characters who not only grew up watching movies at the drive-in and the bijou but also literally live on elm street (as in, a nightmare on), what does it mean to reference a movie? potentially, it signals to the characters that their reality is made of recycled parts, and that they too live inside a screen.
