Hi! I'm loving the designs for your FMA cowboy AU, especially Al's! I was wondering, would he have any sort of speech impediment from his lower jaw being metal? It sounds like he still has his teeth, palettes, and tongue, but what about sounds that need both lips, like M, B, and P? Just curious if he'd struggle with those. Love your art!

initially what i had for Al was that it was just his jaw was replaced with some scarring along the right side of his head and neck. my initial drawings actually didn't incorporate any neck connection but the most recent times ive drawn it it's extended to the neck bc tbh that makes more sense to me, idk what i was thinking originally. theres no additional support for the automail jaw. what was i THINKING.

so a little more than half of al's jaw is actually missing. he's got automail for the right side of his jaw, a replacement for the TMJ and some jaw muscles, as well as extending a bit further down his neck for muscles that impact movement. the jaw that we actually see (that's similar to the armor in fma) is a cover for wiring protection, and it extends over to the other side of his face both for balance and for aesthetic purposes

al retains his upper lip and at least a portion of his lower lip. he's missing up to his lateral incisor on the right side of his lower jaw, and he still has his tongue. his jaw's range of motion isn't super extensive, and is also constrained due to scarring on his face

i think al would have similar issues that come with TMJ irritation/TMD. some ppl with tmd mention sounding like they're slurring or mumbling, as well as speaking slower to articulate better.

since he's still got a portion of his lower lip, he'd be able to make p, b, m, v, f sounds, but they're a little more whistle-y. same with s and z

his normal speaking voice would be pretty soft, hoarse, and a little wheezy. people mistake him for mumbling a lot. he tries to move his jaw as infrequently as possible, so it often sounds like he's speaking with his teeth together

“That’s a miss!” Eddie shouts energetically, a wide grin stretched across his face, “Seven points of damage!”

A groan spreads throughout the party, and they waste no time in plotting what move to make with them all on such low health. After a minute or so, Mike decides to roll for damage since he has a few more HP than everybody else.

The room is silent as Mike tosses the die. It clatters across the table, seven pairs of eyes trained on it.

“Over twelve for a hit,” murmurs Eddie, swiping a hand briefly under his nose,

It slows down… stops.

Fourteen.

Cheers, clapping, and uproarious laughter fill the room. Steve, who is across the room, leaning against the doorframe, catches Eddie’s eye. He smiles and raises an eyebrow at Eddie, who grins back. Steve never really ‘got’ the whole Dungeons & Dragons thing, but that didn’t stop him from spectating the occasional session just to see his boyfriend in his element. Eddie turns back to his game.

“The Thessalhydra has been slain!” he shouts, only amplifying the group’s excitement. High-fives are exchanged across the room as Eddie prepares to proceed with the campaign.

Steve, still watching Eddie from across the room, stands up a little straighter as he notices the darker-haired boy’s brow furrow. After a few moments, his shoulders raise briefly as he ducks into a fist soundlessly, clearly making use of the group’s distraction so as not to draw attention to himself. Steve’s own brow furrows now, this time due to concern. He decides not to say anything for now, however, and instead opts to pay closer attention to Eddie as the game goes on.

Their campaign continues as normal for a while longer, the usual dice thrown, enemies slain, and party as boisterous as ever. Steve momentarily forgets about keeping his eye on Eddie until the same happens again - three sneezes stifled silently into his fist. Steve takes this as an opportunity to move closer to the table, under the excuse that he "wanted to get a better look at the game." Eddie knows this is a lie - Steve has never shown much interest in D&D.

It's only once he's pulled up a chair and sat next to Eddie that he realises just how bad he looks - nose rimmed red, eyes glassy with tears, every sentence punctuated by a pitiful sniffle. Steve's about to say something until Eddie begins hitching again.

"ihH'kNXGt! hnNGXT! F-fuck, I'm…huhHh-!?"

After two haphazardly stifled sneezes, the third seems to elude him, until -

"...uhh'hHISHHiew!"

He's caught off guard by the final explosion, just barely managing to loosely lift an arm to his face, and earning a chorus of "bless yous" from around the room. A mist of spray lingers and falls in the air around him.

Leaning in closer to him, Steve puts a comforting hand on Eddie's thigh.

"You okay?" he says softly.

Eddie scrunches his nose before replying.

"Y-yeah… 'm fine. Got.. hhuh… got half an hour left of this campaign. I'll be… I'll be fine."

Steve looks skeptical but chooses not to press the matter. Another thirty minutes can't hurt, right? DND is Eddie's favourite thing too, he wouldn't miss it for the world…

Eddie gets right back into the swing of the game, albeit sounding a little tired and congested.

"You enter the cave, lit dimly by torches along the walls…" He pauses, sliding a knuckle briefly under his pink-hued nose, before continuing his dramatic description, "...when you… you… hh-hHEhh-! Fuckihhn..-"

A hand hovers instinctively near Eddie's face as he attempts to continue talking through the impending need to sneeze.

"Y-you begin to… to hearhH'isZSCHIEW! Shit- huh'uHSHHiew! ah'kKSHIEW!"

The room observes this spectacle awkwardly, while Steve looks at Eddie, exasperated.

"Eddie. Eddie."

Eddie manages to look up at Steve, eyes brimming with irritated tears, and presses his lips into a sheepish smirk.

"I'm taking you home. Now."

That wipes the smirk right off Eddie's face.

"No, wait, there's - it's not-" he begins.

"I think your party can live without twenty minutes of a game. Didn't look like you were going to get anywhere with it either way," replies Steve, taking Eddie by the arm, prepared to drag him from his 'throne' if he has to. The group protest quietly amongst one another but no outward objections are made. Steve takes this as a sign to walk Eddie right out of the door.

ive been really wanting to get into metal gear lately and i noticed you draw art for it, do you know where i should start??

HIIII 💙 YES . this is the playlist but Ok so I know it may seem intimidating at first, I thought it was too when I started watching it a few months ago, but it was so easy to get rlly into that It stopped feeling so massive! I watched the first two games (“metal gear” 1 & 2 (not to be confused with metal gear *solid* 1 & 2)) but I don’t think they are a great place to start watching for attention span’s sake. Especially bc everything in them is retconned later on, but the summery IS still important so I’ll put like that for you before you start getting to the starting point under the cut:

MG1: The first Metal Gear game follows Solid Snake, a rookie of the FOXHOUND special operations unit. He is sent by his superior Big Boss to the fortress in South Africa known as Outer Heaven, with the goal of finding the missing squad member Gray Fox and investigating a weapon known as Metal Gear. Big boss was secretly the leader of a terrorist nation state. Big boss was holding nuclear weapons/robots ready to threaten the world with, he wanted to make an independent military nation for soldiers to be free. Snake defeats Big Boss in the last battle and escapes the Outer Heaven compound as it crumbles in flames behind him. After the end credits, a message from Big Boss is displayed saying that he will meet Solid Snake again. (You may think this is confusing since he died in the fires, but it’ll make sense way later LOL)

MG2: Set in 1999, a few years after the events of the original game. Solid Snake must infiltrate a heavily defended territory known as Zanzibar Land to rescue a kidnapped scientist and destroy the revised "Metal Gear D". Snake faces off against Gray Fox in Metal Gear D and eventually destroys the mech. Both men later fight hand-to-hand in a minefield, and Snake finishes him off. (because greyfox had remained loyal to Big Boss.) also Kaz Miller, FOXHOUND’s survival consultant also sided against Big Boss during the Zanzibar Land Disturbance, in favor of Solid Snake (this is just letting u know solid snake and miller were familiar and mutually respecting since he is in mgs1) As you can imagine this entire “i was tricked into helping a nuclear development and had to kill my bro” bummed solid snake out. So by MGS1 (METAL GEAR *SOLID* 1) he is a legendary solider who repeatedly has tried to retire.

Congrats! Now you can start watching, if you’d like to play them most of the games are accessible on the xbox and such but I watched most of them on YouTube. Skip metal gear 1 & 2 (THE FIRST TWO THT DONT HAVE “SOLID” IN THE TITLE) and start from this sequence onward (its already in order on the playlist dw i just wanna diagram it:

Metal Gear Solid -> Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty -> Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (this is a Big Boss centered prequel very important) -> Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (ends Solid Snake’s Story timeline) -> Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (continues the prequel story that continues onward from this point) Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes (this is a short game demo that sets up the main setting of Phantom Pain. also TW on this one for very detailed torture tactics..) -> METAL Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain (end of series)

they made another game but kojima left the making of MGS Rising which is pretty irrelevant (2 me) but takes place during the Solid snake and co.’s timeline. but I haven’t played it yet/ it’s spotty in canon-ness

i sooo so recommend mgs, it helps if u know whats happening in its real world counterpart (our real world rn) because its a rlly fun game thats all abt how war is a terrible thing in many ways. but its also a game tht doesnt take itself too seriously and thats why i love it sm too, it keeps you smiling and laughing at how crazy all the characters act and how silly some of the situations are. most ppl hate mgs for that reason but i think its such a specific brand of goofy that it makes it an unforgettable experience. for example: solid snake has a rant where he explains bisexual men dont rlly care what a homophobe would think of them. kojima is canon god. big boss believes in santa clause. people are named stuff like deep throat. its insane.

BLACK DRAGONS CHRISTMAS MURDER ARC

i think ive talked abt this b4 but it just has so much stuff i like in it. its my favorite in terms of storytelling i'm not deep i like easily recognizable gimmicks for babies idc. theres a bunch of reasons i like it so:

the kisaki-hanma-chifuyu-takemichi teamup i love their begrudging cooperation and their hostility...i miss them every day... when will C4U/KillemAll/The Hanmas come back from the war... i see them in every group of 4... the wiggles, teletubbies, tmnt... it was a team born to die but what a beautiful birth...

i think the tenuous dynamics between the gangs at the time was fun the suspense was good. baji just died, kisaki and hanma still in toman, black dragons about to go warring with everyone, no one likes each other it was a great spawning ground for drama

yuzuha was one of my favorite main characters of the arc... no one else understands this... her sigma philosphy of killing taiju. i talked about this more in an older ask but in summary: i like the “inescapable violence” theme in the christmas arc. yuzuha kills taiju to protect hakkai, hakkai takes the blame to protect yuzuha and becomes BD leader to end up just as corrupt as taiju, cycle of doom. neither yuzuha and hakkai had any bad intention they had the same ‘desire to protect, to do good’ that got pushed to the point of doing bad things. even taiju seems to have his version of good will but theres just something up with that guy dawg.

i really wish they’d say smth abt yuzuha in the future of the manga bcz what is she even doing while her little brothers in the middle of the chaos but also the plot has expanded so much by now that unfortunately she probably won’t make another major appearance -_-

on the other side, taiju was my favorite antagonist, i never draw him but he has one of my favorite designs in the series even though every panel of his jumpscares you. takemichi saw him once and immediately started getting night terrors

going off on a tangent though, i'm... iffy about the 'redemption'. i like taiju but this is on the level of him being an imaginary dude with a big role in a story. the point of the story is that you dont like him, hes still a huge douchewagon... i don’t think the main cast (including hakkai) would still be cool with him even though its been 2 years it’s not something that just ‘gets better with time’. taiju didn’t even really say he was gonna be a better person (im pretty sure he said smth the opposite lmfao but i don;t remember well). in the timeskip, it could be interpreted that he did make an effort to improve given how seriously he took grieving hakkais death, but thats 10+ years after the affair, and even then it’s only an implication! that sketch of taiju with mana and luna never sat right with me why does mitsuya trust him sm all of a sudden...in my opinion they really didnt need him to return?? there are better candidates to nearly castrate sanzu for threatening takemichi, fight the living legends, etc. (what happened to the rest of toman, or just ask anyone here they’ll nominate their little boyfriend ran haitani or smth) i could talk about this a lot but TLDR i think it’d be fine if he just went away lol you dont need to have them make up it doesnt make sense

honorable mention! tenjiku arc was fun i liked getting to see the stories of the side cast (esp kawata brothers, mucho, emma)
