I'm sending you the biggest of hugs, anon- starting a new blog is equal parts scary and exciting!! I’m sorry that you haven’t gotten the response you’ve been wanting; I just got the chance to go follow you (yippee!!!) and I also hope this answer can serve as a promo for @pamabutnormalthistime too!! 💜☺️ I put my long answer under a readmore for you!!

The Tumblr roleplay community (you might see this get referred to as the rpc!!) is really fun thing to be a part of, even if it’s daunting to join for the first time!! A lot of making a new blog is subject entirely to what you want it to have- but there are little features you can add that’ll help you organize things to your liking!!

When I started here it was my first ever time making any sort of rp blog- a lot of the beginner’s guides I found were older and spoke about processes that aren’t used as much in roleplay today!! This handy post here explains a lot of the terminology that you might see floating around- and this guide on the same blog walks you through some of the basics too!!

Your blog can be anything you want it to be! If you want it to have an aesthetic sort of theme that fits your muse (character), there are loads of custom HTML themes out there that you can apply to your blog on desktop!! But it’s also okay if you don’t add a theme too- you can let your writing speak for itself!

Some things that I found really helpful to add to this blog were a Rules post, an About post, and a small Mun section talking a bit about me!! Rules pages aren’t necessary, but they’re really helpful for setting boundaries for what sorts of things you are or aren’t okay with on your blog!! (An example is “Will/won’t respond to NSFW asks, please don’t hound for replies unless it’s been one week…") It’s a nice way to keep yourself safe, and also detail how you’ll be writing with anything that gets sent in! (And it's also a nice way for you to quickly learn about any pages you'd like to interact with!) 💜

An About post (or page) can be really helpful for detailing basic information about your muse!! If you’re writing a canon-divergent version of a character, or you have a special backstory that you’ve fleshed out, this section is a wonderful place to put it!! Having an About post can help others see how you’ve made your muse your own, and it can be really exciting to type out even small mundane facts (like height, eye color) to give your character more life!! Some roleplayers also like to include a list of verses in their About section- if you create different universes for your muse from interacting with different medias, or exploring different AUs in your character's story, it can be a nice place to keep track of them all!!

Having a section about you (the mun!!) can be helpful too, but it’s entirely based on your comfort!! A lot of roleplayers will include basic information on themselves (like age, general activity levels, etc…)

You don’t have to include a Mun section, and you’re never obligated to give out any information about yourself!! (You can always use my Mun page- or any of my other pages- as a template for your own!! I won’t mind!! 💜😊)

Once you’re happy with how your blog is formatted, you can consider making a promo for your blog!! A promo can be any post that helps advertise your blog to other roleplayers, and it doesn’t have to be complicated or anything fancy! (Here is an example of the promo I made for this blog, which is in character and pretty simple!! This is an example of a promo I made for a newer blog of mine, which keeps things short and lists off the basics of the blog! Because my rp blogs are sideblogs, me liking a thread will show my main has liked it instead of the actual rp blog- so until Tumblr allows us to change blogs before we like things, I always like to give people I’m interacting with a heads up that the random personal blog in their notifications is still me!! 😊)

A promo doesn’t have to be either of those things, though- it can be something as simple as “Like/Reblog this post if you’re interested in writing with [character]”, and it’ll still do just as fine!! One of the best things about promos is that other rp blogs can reblog them to help boost your exposure!!! (Which I can guarantee will be happening on my end!! 😌)

Something else you might want (but 100% don't have to get!!) is XKit Rewritten!! It's a plugin for your browser designed specifically for Tumblr, and has a whole host of features that you can use to customize your scrolling experience!! I use it specifically for the "Trim Reblogs" option, which lets me trim threads I've been writing with others to keep them short when they go across people's dashes!! (You might've seen some threads on my blog that seem to start with my mutual's last reply, and only feature my add on- that's the work of the trimming feature!! It cuts out all the earlier replies from the reblog, but they're still accessible!)

If you're interested, you can add it for Chrome here and for Firefox here!! (*It's super important to add XKitRewritten and not any other versions- XKitRewritten is designed specifically for the version of Tumblr we have right now, and other versions are older and might not cooperate!!)

If you notice some of the colors in my writing (such as the shade of red I use for Ellie's dialogue, or the other colors you might see in this post) are different from the default options Tumblr gives you, that's because I'm using https://roleplayformatter.carrd.co!! It's not a necessity, but I like pasting my writing in there and copying the source code to add new colors to my writing, and help me format things in one place!! (It's fun to type into, but it doesn't save your writing!! 😂 So it only gets what I'm getting ready to post when there's another copy somewhere!!)

And these are just some of the basics!! There are other things you can add if you’d really like to! (Like icons, which you might’ve seen me use on here from time to time- small pictures of your character that you can use to display their expressions and little mannerisms!! I like to think of icons as sprinkles- they’re never a necessity, and the main flavor focus is really your wonderful writing! But they can frame and accompany what you write if you’d like them to! 💜)

Assets (like the red stone border at the very top of this answer!) can be made yourself, gathered from source blogs like @animatedglittergraphics-n-more, or even requested/commissioned from resource blogs!! I make all of my assets myself in PicsArt, and it’s a lot of fun- but also something I know everyone might not have the energy or time to do!! If icons and assets aren't for you, that's okay- it's never stopped me from interacting with anyone before!!

long post with just my musings about nothing. more a journal entry than anything else. all lighthearted stuff.

dont know if im in a mood but im considering stepping away from this blog and the internet in general for a bit.

been on here to much lately or something plus some other stuff. idk i may disappear briefly.

hesitant to do so because i think my unintentional attempt to keep stuff in this blog's queue is why my brain hasn't just rejected it. like thats not a big consideration point but it is there.

tbf there aren't many points here at all. i just kind of started thinking about this like two hours ago so yk, i may wake up and forget i said anything.

been less engaged in some ways anyway. and more in others. been on here for long periods but i normally try add a bit of commentary in the tags if only for my own memory and amusement. but i haven't seen much that ive really wanted reblog to begin with and ive had nothing to say about anything. also as i think i said in the last two posts here now i just dont have anything to say at the moment. nothing understandable and shareable at least. got real life stuff happening too. had a lot of work to do. and a lot of stress. not actually that much stress probably , not compared to normal because like every situation is a high stress situation to me. just how i work. but i may well be forgetting how stressed i've been. i'm not sure.

idk. this blog does help me sort out my brain some. which is a point to the the other side. this post is basically a journal entry. and thats really how i use this blog most of the time. rambling about random stuff. its more consistent than any journal i've kept or have tried to keep. wondering if it would be unreasonable to make a private sideblog to actually just use as a journal because apparently tumblr gets the thoughts out of me.

i should make a journal tag. maybe. i don't know. for some reason i have more faith in tumblr not losing all my stuff than my other digital note taking and journal stuff. and generally i think better in typing. i do have a physical journal. i just don't think as freely in it, my hand gets cramped or i cant write fast enough for my thoughts. so i like digital stuff. and apparently my brain sees tumblr as more likely to not lose my stuff and die than anywhere else. at least out of places that i like the format of. don't like the idea of dumping this all in a word doc for some reason. it would make more sense. i could stick things on a usb but no, instead here i am with my billion word tumblr post that anyone can see. maybe ill start copying things into word docs after the fact idk.

i dont know why im so afraid that all my shit will be deleted. i really havent lost that much digital stuff over the years, nothing important to me i dont think. not accounts, not saved info, not my own pieces of stuff.. maybe one or two things i dont remember. i dont know why i just dont trust stuff to not get lost becuase of some screw up. idk. its 3:30am i'm going to sleep now. i had more work to do but im tired and i need to do more stuff tomorrow so i might as well get some sleep.

honestly my entire blog brand at this point can be narrowed down to the hour ish (probably) joon spent wrangling snow into duck molds, placing them together for the twt, and captioning them ducktan sonyeondan (im on the look out for new ideas im ready for a change lmk if you have ideas 🥰)

i try my best to “clean out” my blog (reply to my dms/askbbox, check out my mentions, scroll for new content i may have missed etc.) in the mornings and evenings when i have the time. ive been kinda bad at this lately bc its been hectic here in shirley headquarters but ill get to everyone soon I promise!! (this sounds like bad. its not!!! its just that leaving things stresses me out? like how i like replying to texts as soon as i see them or reply emails as fast as i can. ‘unresolved’ correspondence feels rude.)

no im the type to unfollow/block/ignore if someone did or said something i dont agree with without a word

i get the need for those signal boost posts and promulgating important information but (and this is going to sound selfish) tumblr is my destress zone. i go here when the world is being overwhelming and terrible. i certainly read and educate myself as much as my mental health will let me, and i try my best to promote information and donate whenever i can, but i feel like social media has caused some people here to be too into canceling, managing, and being performative in their ‘wokeness.’ like you HAVE to have a blackout pic on instagram and you HAVE to reblog all these posts and you HAVE to immediately cancel everyone who has ever made a mistake EVER with no nuance or context (or dare i say......humanity). like fighting for human rights and speaking up again racism and bringing attention to societal problems is just a checklist to go down instead of being things you should understand and try to improve? like being ‘unproblematic’ starts and ends with mindlessly reblogging ‘woke’ content. idk sorry for going on a rant. going back to your regularly scheduled lighthearted content in 3...2...1

#fun fact! class o stars are the brightest stars in the universe and usually burn blue. oh, what a raging dumpster fire this year has turned into, but, i am not making this post to focus on the negative, but the positive. im making this post as a reflection on how ive grown and how my blog/presence on tumblr have grown and changed.

first, i satrted 2020 with just 41 folllowers, which, at the time, i was surprised to have that many, i made a goal of 50 folowers at first, then, when i hit fifity, i bumped my goal up to 100, then 200, then 300, then 400. when i hit the 400's, my folower count kind of plataeued for a little while, until about 3 months ago, i started gaining followers again! i made my final goal for 2020 to hit 500 followers, and i knew when i did i would do something special. well, that day came a lot sonner than i was expecting. i hit 500 followers and had no idea what to do as a celebration, after a few days, i decided to do an art contest, i didnt get many entries, but, i was happy to get any entries. all 3 entries won, since i felt bad leaving one out

before i talk about the contest winners, i want to talk about my side blogs.

ok, now, how my identity has changed this year

one of the biggest identity changes ive had this year is my self discovery to being polyamorus

i also further looked into my identity as bisexual. i learned a lot about bisexuality, including that i dont need to have feelings for just boys and girls, but many different types of people, and still be valid. i always thought bisexuality is you just like boys and girls strictly, but i found out thats not true, and it made me happy

this is one of the ast sections, but i also want to cover relationships

i was in my first real relationship this year, but ive been in 3, the most successful of which is the one im in now

which leads me to my last thing i want to cover, my wonderful wonderful boyfriend, @alec-the-transgender-artist

he is so incredible. he cares about me and wants whats best for me. hes there when i need comfort, or affection, or anything. we respect each others boundaries and we just enjoy being together. we havent had any arguments, and i am so happy its as smooth as it is. i really think he might be 'the one'

and while 2020 may have been horrible and filled with a lot of heartbreak and hurt and sadness, but some great things happened this year and im so proud of what ive been able to do and who ive helped, who ive helped keep alive and everyone who i helped make the lives of a little less bad and made it easier

i love you all and value all of my followers more than you could imagine

1. why did you choose your url?

When I first made my blog I was way more active in cosplaying and also at the same time I was obsessed with an anime about lesbian space pirates so I just combined the name and that what ive been using on pretty much any social media site.

2. any sideblogs?

I have a post pinned on my blog that lists the names of each blog but i do have a couple of side blogs tho the most active ones im on are my kpop side blog and a blog i have for darker aesthics/occasional venting. (Though I try hard not to vent much cus i know it can trigger others. Everthing is always tagged of course)

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

 About 7 Years.

4. do you have a queue tag?

Yes everything under the tag ‘fak queue’ is queued.

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

 I honestly dont remember I’m pretty sure it was because my friends all had one and we all liked similar things. Plus I wasn’t very active on other social media site.

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

 I just thought it was very pretty and i felt like i needed a fresh change from the usual icons i use.

7. why did you choose your header?

 Again I think it was just to match with my icon in a way that i thought looked aesthetically pleasing.

I’d say that i open the app at least once a day unless life gets really busy.

 I think they’re kinda stupid just because it causes some people a dumb amount of unnecessarily anxiety. My self included of course.

Before we start, I would like you to have certain things in mind when approaching me ooc. I am very shy and quite awkward, which results in me not being much of a talker; however, I will always try my best to be friendly to whoever wants to approach. There will be times when I'm just exhausted, so my wording could sound rude/aggressive, to which I apologize in advance -I never mean to hurt people’s feelings. I. BASIC.

A. This blog is: Selective / Independent / Canon Divergent / NSFW / Mutuals only / Singleship / Mostly iconless / Multiverse / AU, Crossover, OC, and Multimuse friendly / Vaguely affiliated with the OP RP fandom.

B. I am a very slow rper for many reasons —school, family, my ever-fluctuating mood —and I would appreciate it if you refrained from pestering me for replies. In return I offer as much patience as necessary. Think of this blog as low activity please.

C. English is not my mother language so I apologize in advance for any mistakes made.

D. I track the tag #iinfortunii, although mentioning me works just as fine.

E. Constructive criticism is always welcome but anon hate will be immediately deleted. I have no problems if you disagree with my portrayal, but it doesn't give you the right to harass me.

F. Mun and muse are both over 18, so there are chances that heavy content will be present; however I won't be writing smut. G. This is a heavily headcanon-based blog, and changes are likely to be made as more information is revealed about him, though I reserve the right to adjust the new information according to my interpretation of Deuce or simply ignore it, which is why I’m canon divergent.

H. If you'd like to turn an ask into a thread, you can turn it into a new post, or reblog from me, as I won't be using the Tumblr asks anymore due to the problems that come with formatting and such.

Talk things privately, be mature about it, hard-block the person and move on. I am also very aware that a lot of people have done things that can’t be excused, but I like to believe that people can change for the better. If you try to drag me into it, I'll hard block any and all people involved indefinitely.

II. TRIGGERS.

A. They will be tagged as trigger tw, trigger / and trigger cw.

B. I do my best to stay up to date with my mutuals triggers. Your comfort is way more important to me than you might think, so never be hesitant to approach me via IM, (anonymous) ask or stop following me.

C. Triggers that are likely to appear, although some more than others: violence || blood || death || drugs || abuse || knives || body image || medical equipment || suggestive content || etc

D. I have no triggers, so you are free to go wild with your content. I only ask you remember to tag your nsfw (both written and visual), please.

III. INTERACTIONS.

A. Deuce won't like everyone. He might/will make wrong assumptions about your character. He will insult and bite back. He won't always be nice to those he likes. He does many things that serve his interests. You, as the mun, have no reason to take it personal, because I'm won't follow someone I don't like; if you DO take it personal however, and decide to rouse drama, then I'll be hard-blocking you. Goes for me as well —I have no reason to get angry for any of the things noted above.

B. My bonds page displays the relationships that have been built over time, not necessarily through interaction alone but over plotting as well. Refer to it for more information.

C. Interactions with OCs related to canon characters will only take place as long as said OCs have a detailed about page. Personally, I'm not interested in the idea of an OC being blood-related to my portrayal, so I apologize in advance.

D. Formatting isn’t a big thing across my blogs, save for the small text. Please don’t mix either sup/sub with small text when writing with me, as I have eyesight problems. Don’t use colored text either.

E. Non-romantic pre-established relationships are allowed! Just make sure to talk it out with me first, yeah?

01. Spade / Whitebeard pirates (canon and original characters alike that i am MUTUALS with) will have a pre-established relationship as long as the other mun is comfortable with such idea, though that relationship will be limited to merely crewmates, unless discussed otherwise.

F. You don’t need to match my writing length as long as I’m given enough to work with. If something about my reply bothers or doesn’t work with you, let me know and I’ll re-work it.

G. I really enjoy plotting scenarios or talking out about the relationships my muse could have with other muses, so hit me up if you’ve got any ideas! I’ll try to do the same!

H. Mun does not equal muse, so don’t go assuming I’m a jerk simply because Deuce is an asshole from time to time. I’m set on the idea that I’ll give people the same treatment they give me —which is always nice and kind. Kudos to everyone for this ♡

I. I don’t use a threadtracker because I rely on my memory (terrible mistake, I know), but I try to draft people’s replies as soon as I see them. If by any reason it seems like I lost it, then please let me know / send me a link with it and I’ll be deeply grateful.

J. I don’t do nor reply to greetings starters for matters of my own comfort, so I ask of you to never expect a starter or a reply from them.

IV. SHIPPING.

A. Singleship, with the spot taken by daadzi, which means Deuce is no longer open for romantic relationships.

01. Under no circumstances, I will accept more romantic relationships once the spot is taken. That being said, I won’t discourage your muse from falling for / hitting on him, although I ask you to understand he will never respond with the same interest or will never react gently if he’s pushed too far.

02. If my shipping partner is comfortable enough, I'll interact with duplicates with the condition that the relationship is strictly platonic.

B. Constant interaction, mutual interest, and chemistry are a must for the sake of better communication (both ic and ooc, preferably).

C. Please do not approach me if you wish our characters to have either a: one night stand or friends with benefits type of relationships. It won’t work out due to the nature of Deuce’s personality, and for that I apologize.

E. My ship has its own tag so you're free to block it if you don't want to see it on your dashboard. In addition, I'll also tag those posts with only the ship name for this very purpose.

F. Please do not force ships on me.

V. CELEBRATIONS.

A. First off, I am absolutely terrible at keeping up with dates, and to be frank, I am not the biggest fan of celebrating, which is why I think it’s necessary to say I won’t be partaking in any holidays, not even Deuce’s birthday (not that he has one, to begin with). Obviously I will still reply to any gifts received, and will send out things in return —you know, common courtesy.

B. I won't be sending out birthday gifts every year, and I might write drabbles for people once in a blue moon; it doesn’t mean they will be done for the specific date though, so please be patient.

VI. REASONS TO NOT FOLLOW BACK / UNFOLLOW.

Do have in mind that Deuce doesn’t talk about her so your muse can’t simply approach him and ask about her unless they can go through his memories / read his mind / any capability alike or he speaks about her, though it won't take a genius to figure out that she's a product of his imagination.

VIII. MISCELLANEOUS.

A. I will never force people to follow me, so if by any reason you have to unfollow/block me, please go ahead. Your comfort matters and have every right to do what you must to ensure your wellbeing. With that said, I will not tolerate and will immediately hard block if you try to police my content.

B. I do not follow back immediately, and it can take me from a few hours to several days to follow back. Do not take it personally if I choose not to.

I recognize one of the suggestively posed anime girls in their "popular posts" section as the blonde underage girl from Fairy Tail, which I watched like half of and then got bored and thought "oh this is gonna be good"

I go there, see that one of the rps is open for "male, female, and f*ta" (censorship obviously mine)

I dm them their own rules just so I dont have to type in the url on mobile and call them a thundercunt and to read my DNI. I go and play warframe for a few hours.

I argue a little bit, repeatedly telling them that if it's not fetishizing trans women, it's fetishizing intersex people.

I look at my emails to discover i have received an anon demanding to know what my problem with f*ta is

I get the notification that they?? Wrote a callout post about me?? And tagged their "f*ta" rp partners about it?? After they found my main??

I inform everyone that I was interacted with first. They claim I followed through a sideblog. You can't... DO that it's literally NOT how this website works

Ive blocked their rp blog at this point and somewhere in here i get dmed the definition of "hermaphrodite" from the horny idiot's POST LIMIT BLOG alongside a bunch of links that I DIDN'T LOOK AT because i did not and do not care

Had to be assessed as equally conscious and weighty as the total image itself, or moreso because what is the image anyway....? chocolate bars. but only milk. my mom buys exclusively Very Dark Chocolate though so i usually just stare at those and Wish.

5. do you prefer to drink soda from soda cans, soda bottles, plastic cups or glass cups?

soda bottles because i dont like to drink soda quickly and so i want to close it and not let the carbon dioxide escape. soda cans a close second because it’s satisfying to open the tab.

7. earbuds or headphones?

wired earbuds because headphones are too big and clunky and you cant easily lay on your side with headphones on. but if my next pair of earbuds break within a month i might consider Switching because ive had 3 break on me in the past month and half and im at my wits end with earbuds.

11. what you have for breakfast on an average day?

i dont eat much for breakfast cause i want to sleep in until the last possible moment and i get stomachaches when i eat a lot in the morning but ill eat a piece of bread and yogurt maybe.

13. lanyard or key ring?

key ring but that’s just because i havent used a lanyard before. i think i would like a lanyard. im constantly looking for my keys in bags.

this pair of black sandals that i have tan lines on my feet from how much ive worn them

19. sleeping position?

ill sleep however... i like sleeping on my left side. on my stomach with my head to the right. on my back with my arms crossover my chest to keep warm. at the end of the bed with my head where my feet should be. i dont move at all when i sleep so freshman year when i had a lofted bed i think my roommate was a bit concerned in the beginning when i refused a bedrail because she thought i might fall. i never fell which was nice.

23. strange habits?

oh man idk i probably have a lot of those but nothing i can think about right now when im being put on the spot.

I’m cross-posting this from a CaringBridge site that I could link to but which will reveal my secret IRL identity since the URL is my name for ease of finding! (I actually think that’s fine but, y’know, use the info respectfully since I have worked to have separation between my professional social media and my fandom social media.)

This is an introduction and update on how things are going with my breast cancer. I’ll do some cross-posting, but most updates will be on CaringBridge and, potentially, a sideblog here that will be less family-approved and/or full of reflections on the whole process. I’ll link you to that if I make one. Thanks for all the good wishes and the gentle hellos and the positivity. It has been sustaining and I am lucky in my friends and family here. 💜💜💜

(Author's note! This is a long post with a fair bit of technical stuff that I find fascinating but don't expect you to. It's just hard to know how to catch you all up without going into detail but, if you like, feel free to skip to the last couple paragraphs.)

If you're here that means you already know many of the basic info, which is that about 6 weeks ago I was diagnosed with triple-negative, metastatic breast cancer. It's pretty nasty and aggressive and moved quickly from a large tumor in my left breast to my axillary lymph node to my lungs to the soft tissue next to my spine (with probable bone marrow involvement). It's probably about 6-9 months old. I wasn't looking for it since, at 34 with zero family history, I wasn't even old enough for screenings. But genetic mutations come from somewhere and it looks like I am the mutation.

Is there good news? Not much. (Not yet.) The tiniest bit is that more aggressive cancers tend also to be more responsive to treatment. The fact that it's triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) means that the tumor is negative for the three types of receptors that can be used for additional therapies: progesterone, estrogen, and HER2. (A second test actually put my ER number at 20%...which sounds a little like me in general: although I seem very negative at second glance you'll see that I'm about 20% positive.) It's also negative for androgen. This means that the only potential kind of supplementary therapy that might help along with chemotherapy would be immunotherapy. I'm not a candidate for either surgery or radiation since the spread of the cancer is so pervasive and those are highly localized.

I haven't started treatment yet. For these past weeks I've been in a really difficult phase of undergoing a lot of tests to determine the character, extent, and location of the cancer. This was a surprise to me (and to my parents, who came out to NJ immediately and who have been living with me throughout this process). I sort of imagined that when you got the cancer diagnosis--which I did on January 24th at 11am when I was sitting in my office filling out a performance evaluation for my job at Princeton--they'd rush you off to an emergency room where they'd start treatment immediately. I definitely didn't anticipate having to schedule (a challenge in and of itself) and undergo so many tests and to have to wait, terrified, for each series of events. So far, this has been the hardest and worst part.

Being whisked off is more like what happens if your cancer is localized in the breast and associated lymph node. The big first question was whether the cancer was metastatic or not, which they found out with a CT scan that showed it, first, in my lungs. This was maybe the worst news of the whole thing because it meant that radical options to contain it (mastectomy, radiation) were out and that we had to do a bunch more investigating to figure out where the cells had hidden. There was a worry about my liver which showed a large mass that had been there since 2016 when I'd actually been tested for cancer--thanks to chronic fatigue and consistently elevated white blood cell counts--and come up clean. (Luckily the consensus is that the liver mass is benign since it "grew" only .7cm in 2 years, a possible measurement error.) This left the bone scan, which did show the tracer being absorbed, which led in turn to MRIs and a biopsy to confirm metastasis.

Every time I got a new result I learned that you really have to read the fine print when you wish to be exceptional. All of this is so statistically unlikely...and yet it's true.

All-in-all I had two biopsies of three tumors (breast, lymph node, soft tissue next to the spine), two mammograms, two CT scans, and three MRIs. This is in addition to office visits and blood work. I began working with a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) in Manhattan which brought me back to the city more times than since I left after college. It was looking like the only possible treatment option was single-agent chemo. Most clinical trials for TNBC require that you have been treated first. (I have "de novo" metastatic disease, meaning it had already spread when they first discovered it rather than that it was treated locally but spread anyway.) Others require hormonal receptor positivity. The few I was eligible for were often not enrolling.

However, thanks to the tireless research efforts of my dad, we found out about a clinical trial at the Dana-Farber clinic in Boston that I am potentially eligible to join. It's testing an immunotherapy agent that has already proved effective with TNBC with one chemo agent with a different one. (It actually just got approved by the FDA.) The only trick is that the way the immuno agent works requires that you have a specific protein (PDL1) to really see results. Essentially, one way cancer cells sneak around is switching off your immune system so it can't "see" that they are invaders. The turning off of the immune switch happens with a protein bond involving PDL1; the immuno agent being tested blocks that bond so that the "lights" stay on and the cells can't sneak around as easily. Clever! But if I don't have the protein it's not clear that either being in the trial or getting the now-FDA-approved treatment will benefit me more than single-agent therapy.

So that's the test it's all depending on right now. I should hear in the next couple days. If you want to send positive vibes and wishes and make sacrifices to your god(s) of choice, do it for PDL1 positivity. I feel discouraged, since I've been negative for everything so far, but these are all independent events.

I am also waiting for genetic testing to see if this is a germline mutation--like BRCA--that I inherited. This might affect future treatment and, if I did have one, could be good news because BRCA1 and BRCA2 are very heavily researched...in fact, when I worked in breast cancer research at Wash U Med School I was working with the BRCA lines. (For those who don't know, I started college wanting to go to med school--or at least get a PhD in genetics--so I spent 3 summers between age 16 and 19 studying breast cancer. It's equipped me well to have these discussions, though I certainly imagined being the doctor rather than the patient.)

There are three treatment options that I will (hopefully, hopefully) finalize soon.

I will have the PDL1 protein and will enroll in the clinical trial at Dana-Farber. This will require traveling to Boston every 3 weeks for intensive assessment and new rounds of chemo. The agent involved will make regular life a little rougher since it's by IV and only every 3 weeks. (And I might be in the control group, in which case I'd only be getting the chemo agent. I will, however, know which group I'm in.)

I will have the PDL1 protein and will receive the now-FDA-approved immunotherapy/chemo combination in Princeton with a local doctor and Dana-Farber only doing big-picture stuff.

I will not have the PDL1 protein and will receive single-agent chemo in Princeton, probably orally (twice a day) which is less intensively bad and more low-grade bad all the time. (There is, I guess, a kind of 3b. in which I decide to enroll in the trial even if I don't have PDL1 but it seems less likely.)

So, if you are keeping track of the big decisions that will allow me to actually, finally, begin actively fighting against this that's the last one. I appreciate all the notes that you've been sending so far. I get "message fatigue" but I see all of them and, in fact, have been saving all of them to look back on when things get even harder. So if you'd like to leave love and encouragement here too please know that I will see it and it will be helpful. I'm very unfortunate in this but incredibly fortunate in the number of people I have out there pulling for me and offering support.

How do I get an “A” in Cancer?: Illness as an Overachiever

[I’m archiving this, from March 14th, here since I’ve decided to use a sideblog for cancer thoughts and updates.]

Today I heard a loud, resounding nothing more on the PDL1 protein test even though it’s been over a week since the tissue sample was sent off for what is, as I understand, a quick test to do. I left a message for my doctor at MSK who called to nudge the pathologist again and…that’s it! There’s nothing else to do! I will continue to wait, a process that’s made its way out of “anxious tension” and into “close to unbearable.” It’s been 7 weeks tomorrow since I heard my diagnosis, 3 months since I first became concerned about the tumor (although admittedly waiting until after my Christmas travels to test it seemed reasonable when no one suspected it was cancer).

I can now feel pain from the tumors all the time. (Or rather, I feel the pain of them pressing on nerves.) It’s worst with the largest one–the original breast tumor that is about the size of an egg and palpably, measurably growing between doctors’ visits. I had minor shortness of breath for the first time today. Everyone agrees that this is an especially aggressive cancer given that it took only a few months to metastasize and is measurably growing all the time. Despite this, I’ve had to wait weeks for appointments for tests, 10-14 business days for results, and been faced with a medical system what won’t even schedule necessary appointments until conclusive test results (still cancer!) are received from others, meaning the time really mounts up. (This isn’t even touching on insurance questions.) I said in my previous post that I always imagined a cancer diagnosis would be treated like an emergency, maybe not with sirens but with a red tag on your file that says “urgent” and bumps you up the queue somehow. But it turns out that having cancer doesn’t actually make you that special, at least not to people who deal with it all the time. I imagine this fills many of you with rage and, oh, me too!!! So. Much. Rage. And, especially if you’re a parent, you can imagine how my parents are feeling. But it’s hard to know where to direct that rage. I know that doctors are massively overworked and that, what’s more, doctors and nurses both have to maintain a certain distance from their job, and by extension their patients, in order to avoid compassion fatigue. Like Shirley MacLaine I want to burst into the pathology department–where doubtless they are all just about to run that protein assay–and scream at them that I can’t start chemo until they do and all I need is this one result to be able to stop this disease from growing and spreading throughout my body and they are not doing it fast enough dammit. It’s probably for that reason that there are so many layers of office staff to communicate through, so many people to just say “we don’t know yet.” And that is what they say. (For what it’s worth, I feel that MSK may be more susceptible to this than Dana-Farber, where they have clearly spent a lot of time and money focusing on the patients’ experience and wellbeing.) So I’m stuck, waiting with this displaced rage and thrumming pain and constant anxiety. And I feel, of all things, guilty that I haven’t started chemo yet. When people reach out to offer sympathy or to inquire how things are going–both meant entirely as expressions of love and kindness–my first impulse is to apologize for being so behind! Perhaps this is symptomatic of being the perpetual straight-A student; I’m never behind on anything…how could I be behind when it counts for so much? I was making this type of joke even before I knew the full extent of my bad news. “I’m usually so good at tests…how can I be doing so badly on all these?” “I’ve never been just average in my entire life…no wonder this is all so statistically unlikely.” “I’ve always hit developmental milestones early; this is just another instance of it.” And, as I said in my last post, “You have to read the fine print when you wish to be exceptional.” Now, obviously humor is an important coping mechanism for me. For one thing, it’s absurd–absolutely ABSURD–that this should be something I have to go through. So I have to find ways to laugh at it. Humor is also a pretty big part of who I am so continuing to make jokes is also a way of holding on to my sense of self. But these are very particular jokes and they’re all about how I’m a high achiever and will, therefore, CRUSH THIS just like every other challenge in my life. But cancer isn’t a test, a college application, a dissertation, a performance review. And although it may help me feel strong to think of all the other things I’ve come through (and it does) there’s also a danger that I’ll start to feel that I’m “failing” if I’m not “achieving” enough with my cancer treatment. I have already fallen into this trap, blaming myself for the triple-negative status, the lack of androgen receptors, as though if I’d studied harder they would have been there. And that’s just plain wrong. The response my body has, or doesn’t, to various drugs isn’t a thing I can control. My role is to work with my body to give it what it needs and, moreover, to endure. Enduring is what I actually need to succeed at–and be acknowledged for–and that may not look very much like (my) traditional idea of “success.” Success, to me, is making progress: doing something, producing something, being active. And a lot of my treatment is going to look like the opposite of that. I will sit around and let my body fight an invisible war. I will not be able to write or work to the same level as usual. But if I am around, whether I’m improving or not, that is a success. Because that is enduring. And I’m enduring now. 7 weeks of waiting, knowing that you have cancer and that it is growing and spreading each day that passes, is enough to send many people into a meltdown. But I’ve continued to live my normal life as much as possible, continuing to work and socialize as usual (or even more, in the latter case, since I don’t know that I’ll have energy for it later). I don’t talk about my disease all the time, mainly because I don’t want to. (And also because I worry about becoming burdensome to friends but that’s a whole other post.) I have often felt that I haven’t been “earning” the sympathy and good will that has been coming my way simply because I haven’t yet been hooked up to an IV. To me, that physical act is what’s brave because that’s progress. That’s success. But I’d like to try to change that idea–with your help–and to see enduring, even during times of less physical distress, as also being brave and also being worth remarking on, even celebrating. I hope to have more news to share with you soon. But, until then, I endure.

legitimate advice for new phandom blogs

hey !! so i know sometimes posts like ‘RULES FOR THE PHANDOM XD’ are made and they’re all like “numba one. dan is a squishy bean respect this uwu” but this isn’t gonna be like that lol. im just going to list a few actual things that might help people new to the phandom learn about and become integrated into the community! of course these aren’t ‘rules’ and u dont have to listen to any of it ofc,,, im not here to control ur blog, just here to say what people normally do. feel free to rb whether u are a new blog or not, ill appreciate it either way!

1. be interactive! 

here, unique to our corner of timmy darn communism, we have a lot of like virtual traditions that everyone knows. these help you to make friends and also grow ur blog with some new mutuals. here are some examples.

networks: networks, or nets, are a sort of selective gc, usually with a theme or concept that it’s based around, in which all who wish to be part of fill out an application form that determines whether they get in. this is kinda the one with the most work, as u also have to make a group blog and info post, but it’s definitely worth it. i have made my closest friends in nets (such as @phleurnet which i birthed), and a lot of people on here would say the same. if you want to know more or apply, my friend diana runs an update blog @phandomnets! (examples, these are all open btw: x x x)

meetups: meetups are not in real life, don’t worry. a meetup is when someone organizes a specific time at which we all post thing around a certain theme! for instance, on halloween on tuesday, my friend milo hosted a halloween meetup. usually people post selfies but if u are uncomfortable with that, u can post art, music, or anything else related to the theme. a blog called @phandommeetupwatch keeps track of these! (examples, all happening soon/just happened: x x x)

follow forevers: a follow forever is a big celebration post when u reach a follower count milestone, no matter 50 or 5k. u tag all of the blogs you love, and they reblog it to appreciate u! it’s really positive and shows people how their work has paid off. usually people are tagged in alphabetical order, and sometimes people bold their favorites but the stylization is up to u. (recent examples: x x x)

milestone activities: sometimes people do things for their followers when they reach a follower count that involves their followers requesting something! there are many many forms of this type of thing. a common one is blog rates, in which there is a set template and the blogger rates each blog that sends in an ask using the template (info post ex: x; rate ex: x). there are also url edits (x), name/url moodboards (x), and more. u can certainly come up w an idea of ur own, being creative is great!

talk to people: that’s right dude!!! ye!!! u can message a blog u think is cool, or send an ask if u think something they made or are talking about is interesting, or add something sweet in the tags (more on etiquette later) when u rb their post. additionally, sometimes people stir up discourse, and u should participate in it if u want (past discourse examples: x x). u can also send asks when people reblog ask games, which are a list of questions with a theme (new one of mine ex: x). 

2. play around with your blog!

customizing your blog can start giving you what we call a branding, making you distinguished from other bloggers. this can include everything from as simple as using an icon to coding your own about page. 

themes: a blog can be way more appealing if it is aesthetically pleasing. admittedly, i often follow people just because of the smoothness of their mobile theme. a mobile theme is rather easy to construct as u can do it on ur own with a phone. it is how ur blog looks on a phone. although u don’t have to do this, i recommend sticking to two to four colors on ur theme and avoiding stuffing it with a lot of bright things because it can distract from content. additionally, bloggers often make their descriptions short and succinct. (my fav mobiles: x x x.) on a pc, your blog theme can be customized completely on html, meaning there is a lot of freedom. u don’t have to learn to code for this, bc u can find free themes anywhere, just search ‘free tumblr themes’ on google. once again, be creative, but u shouldn’t overload. (my fav pcs: x x x.)

about pages: in order to avoid chunky descriptions but still let people know the key deets about themselves, bloggers create about pages. sometimes these bout pages are uncoded but u can also use html code if u want to. some common things in an about page are interests, maybe personality types/horoscopes/hogwarts houses, original content, and links to other social media. (examples: x x x)

urls: urls are a key part of your blog’s brand. ‘rebranding’ is what people say if they change their url! if u are tired or bored with your url, changing it is an opportunity to change your theme and other parts of ur blog as well. (url change ex: x). 

saved urls: saved urls are basically when bloggers hoard sideblogs in order to reserve the urls used for them. if you ever encounter a blank blog that has ‘saved’ as its title, that’s probably it. sometimes people like to give away their urls, either as a constant thing (ex: x) or by doing a url giveaway (x). either way, it’s a good opportunity to change it up!

tags: in order to keep their blog cleancut and organized, a lot of bloggers have special tags for certain people, certain topics, and/or certain types of media. many people in the phandom particularly have tags for dan and phil that match (strawberries and cream, lune and sole, etc). if they have many of these tags, there can be a page for their tags on their blog. this page can be coded with special html or just a regular tumblr page, it doesn’t really matter. but it’s very useful for those who visit your blog, and makes it easy for u to navigate older posts as well! (examples: x x x)

3. learn to make og content!

producing original content helps you establish what your strengths are and why people should follow you. it also allows u to contribute to the fanbase, and gives u a chance of being noticed by dnp! and the validation is lovely. there are many options if u want to make something. 

gifs: gifs are an ART here in the phandom, and its mechanisms still perplex me to this day bc ive never tried it. u probably already know what a gif is, but if not, its essentially a short animation made in photoshop that repeats. gifmakers are often distinguished by a unique coloring (example gifmakers: x x x), such as my friend emily’s smooth dark blue tint (x). it can be a long process to learn how to gif but it is very rewarding in the end, from what i’ve heard. (tutorials: x x)

art: there is a very wide range of phanartists, all with such talents, either digital or traditional, that you can draw inspirations from for your own work. you can make cartoons, comics, realism, abstract, nsfw even, or any mix (or none) of the former. artists on tumblr definitely deserve more attention than they get here on tumblr, so be sure to show appreciation towards them! (my fav artists: x x x)

edits: edits are the Graphic Designs of our community and are usually very aesthetically pleasing. they can be centered around a certain event, like a video or something dnp made, or just for fun. the more practice you get making them, the more dexterous u’ll become. they can be a great tool if u like the design aspect of art but don’t want to actually draw. (edit makers: x x)

icons: icons are just the little profile picture that u can insert for ur blog. it’s really easy and fun to make them, kind of like a lazy version of edits. you can make them using photoshop or an app like picsart or medibang, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. more on how to use icons in section 4. (examples: x x x) (my lil tutorial: x)

moodboards: moodboards are nine pictures arranged 3 by 3 that have a certain color scheme. it’s kind of like a collage except the photo feature here separates the pictures for u. there are a lot of innovative moodboard makers that stun me w how pretty it looks or how they arrange the pics. moodboards are also an easy and fun option! (moodboard tags: x x x)

textposts: this is by far the easiest and more common form of content u will find. it’s just writing about dnp in a textpost! if a textpost isn’t very serious, people also call it a meme or shitpost. shitposting is defs on the rise here so its a good business to get into. it’s also a great outlet for ur emotions or personal connections to what dnp do! (example talk tags: x x x)

fics: by far the most famous media to come out of here, phanfiction is a popular form of phan indulgence. u have probably heard of the most scarring ones (list: x), but there is actually a really vast range of it, not just creepy smut! some other genres are fluff, angst, and slow burns. u will discover that, despite the sterotype, not all fanfiction is bad. you can find lovely fics on @phanfictioncatalogue by genre, au, or topic. and, if u need help writing something, many writers would love to help. (a few well-known fics: x x x x x)

4. tumblr etiquette!

i know tumblr might seem like a simple social media (or perhaps not after u’ve read all the above?) but there’s a lot of things that u just....u just don’t do. it’s sort of like virtual manners, and if u don’t follow them, then it’s unlikely that people will like ur blog. once again, this is by no means me forcing u to run ur blog a certain way. it just happens that the types of ppl who break these rules are who we mock in gcs :////////. so yea, here’s some advice.

credits: if u decide to use someone’s art, edit, gif, or icon on the theme of ur blog, check what they require of u before u use it. most content creators strongly ask for credit in the description of ur blog, either by link or like ‘icon/header/art by ____’. it is just a common courtesy to the person who spent time on that, and if u think credit will ruin the aesthetic of ur blog, a) u probably don’t have an aesthetic in the first place and b) learn to appreciate art, binch. 

anonymity: anon asks can be very powerful either negatively or positively depending on how u yield them, so make sure that u are careful with what u send. compliments are always welcome and criticism as well, but blatant rudeness or hate will do nothing. u will only make someone feel bad about themselves and it will not accomplish anything. also, u face the threat of all their friends turning u into a meme. 

sensitivity: a lot of people here are way too easily offended by harmless jokes, a common example in the phandom being when we insult dnp affectionately and people take it way too much to heart. please don’t start drama over something w no real meaning. however, there are times when it is indeed necessary. if u want to criticise a blogger, be respectful of them simultaneously. by all means, if u spot someone being racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, or the like, feel free to call them out on it. but beforehand, make sure that u have done ur research and are educated on the topic, or u could turn out to be blatantly wrong. 

adding to posts: everyone makes this mistake when they start out here and that’s totally okay, but adding to every post u reblog is incredibly bothersome. a rule of thumb would be don’t add anything unless what u say will actually improve the post significantly. if ur additions are along the lines of ‘LOL’ or ‘i relate!!!!’ or ‘philly is a smol bean XD’, learn to use the tags for heaven’s sake. they’re there for not only organization but also for commenting. some exceptions, though, would be if u are mentioned in the post or the op is your close friend. 

respecting privacy: this should already be obvious to u, but respect dan and phil’s boundaries. do not tag them or their main tags (#daniel howell, #danisnotonfire, #amazingphil), in any phanfics, phanart (like specifically with them as a romantic ship), or phan edits. do not talk to their family members, expose their personal info like address or phone number, and do consider that they are real people just like u. we may make things based around phan, but it is kept in a community for us and not for dan and phil’s eyes. this is very important.

timmy darn communism: me being my usual weird self and replacing ‘tumblr dot com’ with random words that start with the same letters

mutuals: someone who you follow and who follows you; usually who u interact with most

rb: shortening for ‘reblog’

discourse: when theres is intense discussion of a certain topic, sometimes phan-related sometimes not, sometimes serious and sometimes silly

branding: the word ‘branding’ kinda started as a joke, but it’s generally what we use to call what someone’s blog reminds them of, whether it be a certain color or a discussion topic; my branding, if u asked a mutual, would probably be impressionism, tea, and baguettes (dont ask ab that one)

html: a simple type of coding used for designing websites! u can learn basic html here or here, it’s way easier and funner than it looks

dnp: dan and phil; we also say ‘deppy’, ‘dip and pip’, ‘the boys’, ‘the rats’, and more

coloring: basically the stylization of a gif, shown through filters, textures, contrast, brightness, etc. 

talk tag: a tag in which all of the textposts that a person makes are sorted into

fluff: just what it sounds like, a type of fic that usually has a lot of soft stuff like cuddling, flirting, and looooove

angst: a fic with a lot of drama, usually sad or very emotional

slow burn: a fic where a pairing, in this case phan, slowly falls in love

au: stands for ‘alternate universe’, a fic in which dan and phil are written not as youtubers but in a completely different scenario (ie. bad boy and new guy in high school, university students, space exhibition, anything u can dream up really)

hi is this a new blog? ive wanted to start a sideblog for bts and im kind of afraid it’ll flop 😓any advice?

hi! this is a very new blog, yes. it’s a sideblog i always had the url saved for, but only actively started posting since the start of this week. i’m actually from a girl group fandom, that’s why my gifs look a bit different in style, and i was actually pretty intimidated starting out, too! i didn’t know anyone in the fandom or what to tag, versus my comfort with #femaleidolsedit, #rvedit, etc. each fandom kind of has it’s own thing. but i was able to ask some friendly mutuals for guidance (shoutout to @booptaegi and @jjeongukie, they’re both absolutely amazing people who love ggs as well and they deserve all my love n support

i think my main advice is to not be scared in the first place, because it’s a new blog and of course you’re going to start at the bottom. it helps that you’ve already had a blog before; i personally felt that it was not too long ago i built up my red velvet blog to where it is now. the “all new” feeling of it is great though! i have a chance to try to be an organized blog without my old, prehistoric, ugly, before-kmplayer, hugely dithered and badly colored gifs. it’s a big step to make content for another group, knowing you won’t get recognition for it for a while. i would say try your best to go for quality in everything that you make, but most of all, do it for your own enjoyment, if you love the boys and what they do for us. one of the first baby steps i took was creating that folder called “bts files” and really understanding the group’s content. i started by downloading all their mvs, recent performance .ts files, and i now know that bts run comes out on v live every tuesday. it never hurts to reach out and ask if you’re lost. 

 try to get a feel for them and don’t mind the notes too much. if you’re wanting to improve your gifs or get to know the group a bit better, i know angela ( @nochuie) has an amazing organization system (type a date, and you’ll get it!) & archive & gif tutorial???? wow i’m just now discovering that gem. she’s a wonderful & talented person too
