Japanese Monkey God

User @red-lights-burning asked if there was a connection between Sun Wukong and the monkey gods of Japan. They provided lovely info, which was split between two asks, but I decided to put everything together into a single post.

@red-lights-burning asked: Japan has their own monkey protector named Masaru AKA Sannō Gongen, who was created back in the early 9th century by Tendai Buddhist sect founder Saichō shortly after he returned from China. So it makes me think if Monkey King was already a thing in the 800’s and if he was one of the inspirations for Masaru. A description from onmarkproductions (a really great site for anyone curious about Japanese Buddhism and Shintō) MASARU 神猿 Literally “Kami Monkey.” Masaru is the sacred monkey and protector of the Hie Shrine (aka Hie Jinja 日吉神社, Hiyoshi Taisha 日吉大社). The term “Masura” is often translated as “excel,” reflecting the belief that this sacred monkey can overcome all obstacles and prevail against all evil. Masaru is thus considered a demon queller par excellence (魔が去る・何よりも勝る). In the Heian era, Masaru (also translated “Great Monkey”) was invoked in Kōshin rituals to stop the three worms from escaping the body. Masaru also appears in Japanese scrolls used in Koushin rites. Here’s a couple other descriptions SANNŌ GONGEN 山王 権現 SARUGAMI 猿神 Fertility, Childbirth & Marriage Monkeys are patrons of harmonious marriage and safe childbirth at some of the 3,800 Hie Jinja shrines in Japan. These shrines are often dedicated to Sannō Gongen 山王権現 (lit. = mountain king avatar), who is a monkey. Sannō is the central deity of Japan’s Tendai Shinto-Buddhist multiplex on Mt. Hiei (Shiga Prefecture, near Kyoto). The monkey is Sannou’s Shinto messenger (tsukai 使い) and Buddhist avatar (gongen 権現). The monkey messenger is also known as Sarugami (猿神; literally “monkey kami”). Sarugami is the Shinto deity to whom the three monkeys (hear, speak, see no evil) are reportedly faithful. The monkey shrine at Nakayama Shrine 中山神社 in Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, is dedicated to a red monkey named Sarugami, who blesses couples with children. According to shrine legends, the local people at one time offered human sacrifices (using females) to this deity. The shrine is mentioned in the Konjaku Monogatari-shu (今昔物語集), a collection of over 1000 tales from India, China, and Japan written during the late Heian Period (794-1192 AD). Sarugami, like Sannou Gongen, is also worshipped as the deity of easy delivery and child rearing. At such shrines, statues of the monkey deity are often decked in red bibs -- a color closely associated with fertility, children, and protection against evil forces and diseases like smallpox.

My answer:

I've read only a little bit about Japanese monkey gods. I previously referenced Sarugami in my article about the possible shamanic origins of primate-based boxing in China. Part of footnote #14 reads:

In Japan, monkeys were also associated with horses and healing via the warding of evil. Apart from monkeys being kept in stables like their Chinese counterparts, their fur was applied to the harnesses and quivers of Samurai because the warriors believed it gave them more control over their mounts. Furthermore, monkey body parts have been consumed for centuries as curative medicines, and their hides have even been stuffed to make protective amulets (kukurizaru) to ward off illness. Likewise, a genre of painting depicts divine monkeys (saru gami), messengers of the mountain deity, performing Da Nuo-like dances to ensure a good rice harvest (Ohnuki-Tierney, 1987, pp. 43-50)

The aforementioned article suggests a connection between monkeys and the Shang-Zhou Da Nuo (大儺 / 難; Jp: Tsuina, 追儺) ritual, an ancient, war-like, shamanic animal dance designed to drive away demonic illness and influences. The pertinent section reads:

It’s possible that the “twelve animals” of the Da Nuo exorcism refer to some precursor of the Chinese zodiacal animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig). If true, monkey fur could have been among the animal products worn by the ritual army. After all, monkeys have long been associated with curing illness and expelling evil in East Asia. [14] A modern example of exorcists who don monkey fur are the shamans of the Qiang ethnic group of Sichuan. The Qiang worship monkeys as the source and savior of their sacred knowledge, as well as the progenitor of their people, the latter being a myth cycle common among ethnic groups of Tibet and southwestern China.

This is the only relevant info that comes to mind. But based on what I know, I would guess that Sun Wukong and the monkey gods of Japan draw upon the same cultural sources. I hope this helps.

The Deadlords / 十二人の魔将

The Deadlords refers to twelve undead warriors first serving under the Loptrians of Jugdral in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, and were commanded by Validar and the Grimleal millennia later in Fire Emblem: Awakening. The title is rather straightforward; the Deadlords are the most powerful of the Risen, so them being referred as the lords of the dead denotes their strength.

The individual Deadlords are called Mus, Bovis, Tigris, Lepus, Draco, Anguilla, Equus, Ovis, Simia, Gallus, Canis and Porcus. These names invoke the Chinese Zodiac Animals, using Latin-based words to refer to the Mouse/Rat, Bull/Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat/Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig/Boar, respectively. The use of these names are likely derived from an old Chinese tale on how the Zodiac Animals were assigned. It is said that the Jade Emperor, the first god, wanted to see the creatures of the earth after ruling from Heaven without ever visiting Earth. The twelve animals that came to the gates of Heaven to see the Jade Emperor were given years to represent. A near-identical story is found in Buddhism, in which Siddhartha Gautama asked all animals to come to him before he ascended from Earth, but only twelve arrived. This could relate to the subservience of the Deadlords to Loptous/Julius/Validar.

In Japanese, the Deadlords are called 十二人の魔将 (rōmaji: jūniri no mashō) or 十二魔将 (rōmaji: jūni mashō), literally meaning "Twelve Demon Generals". This name comes from the Twelve Heavenly Generals (十二神将, rōmaji: jūni shinshō). In many East Asian forms of Buddhism, the Twelve Heavenly Generals are twelve yaksha, a type of guardian deity, that serve the buddha of healing and medicine, Bhaisajyaguru. Much like the name localizations of the individual members, the name seems to be based on the relationship between the Deadlords and their superior. The Twelve Heavenly Generals have also traditionally been associated with the Zodiac Animals, likely inspiring the English localization.

The individual members of the Deadlord share a different naming pattern in Japanese; they are instead called アインス (rōmaji: ainsu), ツヴァイ (rōmaji: tsuvai), ドライ (rōmaji: dorai), フィーア (rōmaji: fīa), フュンフ (rōmaji: fyunfu), ゼクス (rōmaji: zekusu), ズイーベン (rōmaji: zīben), アハト (rōmaji: ahato), ノイン (rōmaji: noin), ツェーン (rōmaji: tsēn), エルフ (rōmaji: erufu) and ツヴェルフ (rōmaji: tsuverufu). These correspond to the first twelve numbers in the German language: eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf and zwölf. Beyond the obvious connection of there being twelve Deadlords, the names relate to the German-based naming scheme in various military organizations in Jugdral, such as the Weiss Ritter of Belhalla, the Lance Ritter of Leonster, or the Welkenrosen of the Loptr Church. It could also be interpreted that by numbering the Deadlords, it dehumanizes the lives that had their bodies stolen for the Deadlords' use.

Sass: Ssyan (cyan, getting a double ss to reference snakes hissing, could also play off scion)

A talk with a person pointing out superficialness of the connection of the Miraculouses with Chinese culture inspired me to look a bit more into the Miraculous power and culture context.

So we have in the show the Chinese Miracle Box with 19 Miraculouses.

The duo of Ladybug and Cat: as the person rightfully pointed out, indeed based on European folklore concepts. Also in the show associated with Yin Yang duality.

The next five:

Fox IS alluding to Asian folklore of illusion-crafting fairy foxes. Additional point for them using a flute and the visual of summoning a ball of light (in some Asian folklore such as Japanese the fairy foxes were considered responsible for atmospheric light phenomena, don't know if it is the thing with China too). A cunning fox is a cultural archetype in Europe too, but a bit different.

Turtle, while matching the actual characteristics of the animal, IS prominently featured in Chinese culture, and IS symbol of protection and longevity, such as its image used in traditional monuments to represent survival through centuries.

Bee, Butterfly, Peacock - I know next to nothing of their role in Chinese or generally Asian cultures.

The zodiac Miraculouses: the list of them is using the Chinese zodiac, despite they don't feel actually like a set (too different powers, disproportioned power scale, and some of them look like the authors were desperate to find ANY kind of power because the animal has to be on the list - most notable with Goat). So it feels like if they weren't a fixed list, it could be better. What of their individual powers...

Mouse. Mice being small and coming in multitudes is just a fact, does NOT look like a culture reference.

Ox, Tiger. Oxen being steady and tigers being fierce and strong also is an obvious fact, but at least tigers ARE actively featured in Chinese culture with these connotations of fury and power, so I'll let it pass. Seems like oxen also can be culturally relevant, but not sure.

Rabbit. The time travel powers in Miraculous seem purely authoric mythology (does not allude much to actual rabbits either). Rabbit is relevant in Chinese culture, but with a very different role - moon and healing. So NOT.

Dragon. It IS obviously relevant in Chinese culture, and indeed with weather/elemental powers.

Snake. Snakes associated with wisdom and prophesy (-> Intuition -> knowing beforehand) is a culture archetype, as well as association with cyclicity (the Ouroboros theme), and probably IS more clearly seen in Asian cultures than in Western European where the snake is mostly connected with treachery.

Horse. Horses being used for transportation is just a fact for any material culture that has domesticated horses, NOT a symbolic thing.

Goat. This power does NOT seem to allude to anything at all, on top of being repetitive within the show system.

Monkey. Monkeys associated with parodying and mischief IS an archetype and IS relevant for Chinese culture via the legendary character of the Monkey King.

Rooster. Roosters being (over)confident and showing off looks like an obvious fact. There are prominent symbolic connotations of roosters both in Asia and Europe (like sun symbolism), but those are NOT used in the show.

Dog. Dogs fetching things is another obvious fact.

Pig. Pigs are viewed culturally, in Chinese culture too, as symbol of hedonism which can connect to "jubilation", but their association with down-to-earth delights of the moment feels like the opposite of dream-based power.

To sum up: out of 12 zodiac Miraculouses, only 4-5 actually use Chinese cultural symbolism (Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Monkey, and possibly Ox). At least three missed a good chance to do so (Rabbit, Rooster, possibly Pig) by picking non-culturally-charged powers.

So yes. The supporting Miraculouses could easily be a random collection of Miraculouses from around the world, postulating Chinese connection only for those four. Not a set. Also, that would allow to rid of the Goat if the authors ran out of imagination, or replace it with any other animal/power if they wanted a Miraculous for Nath so much. Also with the Pig, they could use a better animal for the dream power if not bounded by need to shove everything into the zodiac.

Chihiro was born on January 4, 1998, in Kyoto, Japan, to her mother Ikari Sakura and her father Ikari Michio. She is an only child.

Although she comes from a middle-class family, her parents are quote rich—both of them are dentists.

astrid was born to two american citizens, however, she was born in mannheim, germany due to her father being stationed there for the first nine years of her life.

she loved growing up there but when looking back finds it difficult to pinpoint particularly happy moments.

it's tainted by the news that was given to her only a week after her birthday, they'd be moving back to america.

like most children, astrid didn't want to move. this was her home, with her friends, and her school. why did they have to leave?

she was offered no explanation just firm tones and heavy scolding when it was found that she'd unpacked half the boxes two days before they were to go.

her mother attempted to coax her into cooperating but her father's cold anger prompted her to do the opposite of that.

even if unable to do much about the move, astrid found that she and malicious compliance got along.

if she was tasked with something, she'd do it. just not well. but at a point even that began taking too much out of her and Virginia had little else for the tween to do.

so she took up art, her interest stemming from murals and graffiti that'd been plastered all over germany. she took it upon herself to bring a bit of 'home' to this pitstop.

her first arrest is at fourteen, well it's more of a detainment. she'd been caught red-handed. literally covered in spray paint while her 'acquaintances' scattered like rats leaving the half-smoked joints and empty cans of beer at the less-than-aware girl's feet.

her father grounds her. berating her for being an embarrassment, god how could god have given him such a failure of a child.

it's not the first time he's spewed such venom her way but this time it doesn't just sting, it burns. through the thick skin she'd been blessed with straight through to her chest and she figures. well might as well live up to the expectations.

her behavior worsens, at times taking a life of its own. she's up for days on end, frequenting parties meant for a more mature audience. when her fakes get cut, she slips a hand into her mother's purse seeking funds to pad her lifestyle. it's not as though she cares enough to notice the missing money. or astrid.

it's as though she's finally settling into a scene with like-minded people, they're in parking lots before the sun rises and even after it sets.

stargazing settles her mind, she doesn't mind the cramped truck bed or the scent of stale beer coating their breaths. she's at ease.

then all at once she's uprooted once more. this time they're set to move to japan, she begs to be left behind. threatening emancipation. life on the streets would be better than being suck with them for another night.

she packs a bag and sets out lord knows where to. it'll work out it always does. maybe it was the strange cocktail she'd made lined with pills and caffeine to help her stay up, or the off-putting way with which she ambled about.

a call to the police about a strange figure shuffling through the yards of their residential neighborhood put a stop to that plan before she'd made it out of the town.

even her mother has no kind words for her this time. drugs? 'i thought we raised you better than that.' as if.

japan could've been a new start. for astrid. for their family as a whole. but she's barely taken her shoes off before she's confronted with the news. boarding school. honestly, she wondered what took them so long to ship her off. she doesn't complain. she's too tired to.

the different setting does little but upset astrid further. she doesn't fit in. barely understands the locals and most of those who speak english want little to do with her.

her volatile nature making a debut in the form of an argument with her father at the entrance of the building. she wishes death upon him before her mind can tell her mouth to stop but doesn't apologize. she just hurries away. ready for the next three years to flow past.

and they do. she learns japanese as best she can with her less-than-admirable attention span most energy spent on trying to sneak off campus or see what she can get away with.

on her 18th birthday, an envelope arrives. with her paperwork, a letter, and a check evidently signed by her mother. she doesn't read it. context clues are more than enough for her.

her 'trust fund' only funds her travel expenses. where she'd once hated being constantly shuffled from place to place, it'd in some twisted fashion become a part of her. stability sending waves of unease through her. she had to move.

at first, she's directionless but soon art takes the forefront of her adventures, astrid doesn't call it studying. she's staying in hostels, getting food poisoning but learning all the same. about cultures and the people it produces. and about herself.

chile is meant to be a pitstop of sorts, she's but a whirlwind blowing through the area. but the land, the people, the art. open themselves before astrid, and as soon as she's figured she's seen it all and it's time to go more comes along.

she's only 22, it's not as though she'd run out of time soon. she opts to pause for a moment. her feet deserve rest after all.

Anime for Learning Japanese Recs

Chances are if you’re learning Japanese, one of your motivators is being able to enjoy Japanese media like anime and understand it completely. And while some people might argue against using anime as a tool to learn anime, I say it actually is a great tool to use for shadowing and listening practice IF you use the right series (and don’t entirely rely on anime alone).

My biggest pro tip would be avoid using extremely action/fantasy-oriented anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto or even Boku no Hero Aacdemia. I’m not saying to you shouldn’t watch them, but I am saying that those aren’t anime to watch for studying. Those are more like entertainment anime. Nice as those anime are, a good portion of the vocabulary wouldn’t exactly be... useful. Trust me, unless you’re talking about the show specifically with friends, ‘cursed energy’ and ‘illusion techniques’ are the last words you should be learning lol.

So I will be supplying a list of anime I enjoy and think would be great tools for aiding your journey learning the Japanese language.

Fruits Basket 2019・フルーツバスケット

Long long ago, God decided to throw a festival extending an invite to distinct creatures of the land. However, the trickster Rat lied to the Cat that the festival would be taking place the day after the intended date. The next day the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger and so on all arrived to attend God’s festivalー all except the Cat who had been tricked. Fast forward to present day Japan and high schooler Tohru Honda finds herself in a particular predicament when, through a series of events, she finds herself living with two boys her age Yuki and Kyo Sohma. The catch? Whenever embraced by the opposite sex, they, along with ten other members of the Sohma Clan, turn into one of the twelve zodiac animals.

Fruits Basket is one of my favorite series of all time, it’s literally in my top 3 anime/manga of all times. It was the first manga I read back in the early 2000s as a little kid, the 2001 anime garnered a huge fanbase, it just has a special place in my heart. It might like look like a typical love triangle series with a bland protagonist and equally bland love interests where she plays ‘which personality do I like the most’, but Fruits Basket is definitely not that. Character journeys are non-linear, the good and bad lovely and messy parts of relationships are depicted and even side characters are given justice and arcs. Despite its whimsical summary, however, Fruits Basket is a story about abuse, trauma and healing and may be triggering for some. But I assure you, Furuba handles the topic abuse with so much respect and grace and deserves every praise it receives as a character-driven story. (There is a 2001 adaptation but it isn’t entirely faithful to the manga so I recommend watching the 2019 remake first.)

Note: Despite being an early 2000s series, Furuba’s remake was adapted to modern day with smart phones and the like so outdated language isn’t really a problem. You’ll actually be getting a good mixture of formal and informal speech throughout the show thanks to our protagonist, Tohru. Contrast to the rest of the cast, Tohru consistently speaks using keigo ー a quirk pointed out by the rest of cast. So if you’re trying to work on formal speech, Tohru will be a useful character to pay attention to.

NANA・ナナ

Nana Komatsu is a naïve 20 year old with a penchant for easily falling in love at first sight. Nana Osaki is a jaded 20 year old polishing the shards of her dream to become a successful rock musician. These two young women are as different as different gets and yet they find their worlds colliding after fate brings them together on a one-way train ride to Tokyo. Once they find themselves rooming together in apartment number 707, it is clear both Nanas are in for the journey of a lifetime.

One of the most underrated josei anime of all time and another 1 of my top 3 series of all time. The characters? Amazing. The music? Ten out of ten. The Nanas have such great chemistry and both are equally amazing. Nana can be a bit to real when it comes to emotions, messy relationships and everything in between so it can be extremely personal, especially if you are in the same age demographic as the the main cast. I also have a fun little anecdote about how I share birthdays with Olivia Lufkin who provides the singing voice for the character Reira and we exchanged birthday DMs, this series is literally everything to me. If more people come to learn about it and love it through language learning, the better! 

Note: NANA takes place in around the early 2000s so things like slang might be a little outdated but you’ll hear plenty of casual speech in order to talk with friends

High schooler Ritsuka Uenoyama has a simple plan: tolerate school and rock out with his band. But a wrench is thrown into the cogs after he encounters fellow student Mafuyu Sato, a quiet boy who constantly carries around a guitar case. Weird as he is though, the kid has some pipes. Upon asking Mafuyu to join the band though, Ritsuka finds himself annoyed and stumped when the guy says ‘no thanks, not interested’.

Honestly my favorite quirk of this series is how each of the for protagonists has a kanji for one of the four seasons in their names 冬, 夏, 春 and 秋. Given is a lovely series to watch with gay and bi characters and encouraging message surrounding coming to terms with one’s sexuality. This anime does have light suicide mentions as Mafuyu’s previous boyfriend committed suicide prior to the beginning of the series, so I would like for that to be open so no one is taken aback by it. And if you’re looking for a series centered around a queer cast with a splash of music, this is the series for you.

Asobi Asobase・あそびあそばせ

Enter Olivia, an American raised in Japan who can’t speak English. Enter Kasumi who, in spite of her seemingly intellectual appearance, is absolutely trash when it comes to her English class. Then enter Hanako, an intellectual student with decent athletic skills who literally just wants to be popular. Somehow, they end up creating a club together. What kind of club? One centered around learning fun past times and hand games.

Pure chaos and girls being girls the anime, that’s it send tweet. There’s honestly not much more I can say about it, but if you’re looking for a light-hearted watch to accompany your learning this is it right here.

Aria the Animation・ARIA

In the hopes of becoming a certified gondolier, young Akari Mizunashi decides to leave her home on Earth and travel to the new blue planet of Mars to live on Neo-Venezia. Along the way, she meets other apprentices hoping for the same thing and they all train hard in order to accomplish their goals of becoming Primas.

A wholesome and slow series to use to learn Japanese that I loved watching as a kid. Aria actually have several series with the main three, in order being Aria the Animation, Aria the Natural and Aria the Origination. I recommend giving this show a watch! Each episode is its own adventure while following the overarching story of the three protagonists establishing themselves in their chosen career paths. The animation is lovely and so is the music, so I’d give this underrated classic a watch for your studies.

Carole and Tuesday・キャロル&チューズデイ

Carole is an orphan from Earth. Tuesday is a Mars native who runs away from home to escape her stuffy and sheltered rich life. The one thing they have in common? Their desire to create music and after meeting during one of Carole’s impromptu street performances, they realize that their talents combined will get them a lot farther than if they tried being solo artists. 

Another music series but with some light science fiction elements since, like the previous recommendation, C&T takes place on terraformed Mars. And all things considered, C&T is a pretty diverse show with characters of different ethnicities all over and even one of the main characters being a black teen. So if you’re really looking to have some diverse cast members in your anime, give this anime a shot.

The fan translator already explained the term Ushimitsu from Ushimitsu Kozou as referring to the "third section of the hour of the ox", or "witching hour" (approximately 2:00-2:30 AM). TL;DR, in feudal Japan they call the hours by the name of the animals of the zodiac, not "1 o'clock", "2 o'clock", etc. This Ushimitsu period of time is a specific period that is associated with the supernatural.

I want to add that this thief fellow is based on the folklore of the "Robin Hood" style thief Nezumi Kozou 鼠小僧 (Rat Boy). Steals from the rich, gives to the poor, that kind of thing. He's less famous in English speaking circles than Goemon, but he's a pretty common feature in various Japanese works, like kabuki, manga or period dramas.

Since his moniker is "rat", one of the 12 Asian zodiac animals, sensei parodized it using another term relating to the zodiac (the Ox comes after the Rat). The ushimitsu happens to also have a mystical vibe to it, so it's perfect for a thief's name.

The manga even actually name-dropped "Nezumi Kozou" verbatim in a later chapter, but the scanlators didn't seem to manage to catch this reference (the explanation only mentioned the zodiac of the Rat coming before the Ox):

~ Decisiveness: She started to be more decisive after becoming the leader of the group, but that was something she always had. She now is more clear in it, assessing all the options, even bringing them up with members, and sometimes even to staff, and take the best option.

~ Perseverance: After having many “almost” in debuting, one would think she would've given up, or her confidence would've gone down, but it never happened. If something, Mikyoung took it as a sign to keep trying. And she did try, time and time again, until WER1 was formed. And she won't give up on any goal she has.

~ Charismatic: People who knows her, loves her. That's how she ended up ranking so high in survival shows, how she's friends with many idols, how she got her place as leader. It all comes with being charismatic, being someone people loves both in camera and out of it.

HAIR: Short, pink hair in a bob, with bangs covering most of her forehead and eyebrows. Her roots show hints of lightness, though, indicating her hair is dyed. Her real hair color is white.

FACIAL HAIR: none

EYES: Sky blue

SKIN TONE: Pale and pinkish, with freckles dotting her joints, cheeks, and nose. They become brighter and slightly redder in sunlight.

BODY TYPE: She is small and skinny, but not immune to gathering fat in her belly and thighs. A side-effect of being born with such light skin and hair is being easily sunburnt, as well as being more prone to fall ill or get hurt. As a result, she has a weak constitution, and was a sickly kid.
