Note
could i get your take on what the companions (or just my favorite boy X6's) top 10 fave candies/foods would be in a modern AU?
anon you are in luck, because I am constantly thinking about the diets and eating habits of my blorbos
The numbered list isn't in any particular order, it's just so I don't have to manually count each point
so
What the companions would eat if not in a post apocalypse
Cait; Wouldn't have a taste for fancier cuisine. Eats more...hick-ish. I can say that because I was a hick with this kind of diet, growing up. Has a taste for filling, cheap, low-effort food...think lots of fast food, but "healthier" fast food. Like Chipotle, Panera, etc. Can cook, doesn't often, but will if she has a craving. Savory or tart tastes. She tends to eat lighter than you'd expect.
Blueberry brownie anything, favors dark chocolate in general
Submarine sandwiches, anything with pickles
Key lime pie
Salt and vinegar chips and thinks critics of such chips are cowards
Peach Redbull, any energy drinks though
Storebought hummus and Doritos, has been seen eating hummus with just a spoon though
Blueberry bread pudding. Simple to make, fun to eat, very comforting. Buys her bread already stale from a local bakery, has a guy to hook her up with the old shit
Seafood chowder
Sausages in any capacity. Jerky sticks, breakfast sausage, etc. Loves chorizo.
Honey buns from the gas station
Curie; Health nut, she eats like every influencer claims they eat like. Only, Curie actually eats like that. Lots of fresh foods and whole grains, little red meat. However, Curie makes a point to have foods that other health nuts would condemn, thinks its really important to not label any food as "bad." So, she balances between health nut and normal person. Her taste leans toward bright and/or sweet. Dislikes red meat.
Salmon breakfast wraps
Tropical fruit smoothies, eats so much pineapple
Iced tea, favors raspberry. Never seen without an iced tea of some kind
Halibut tacos, likes red cabbage and a fuck ton of lemon on it. Soft shells all the way
Bananas foster
Whipped brie dip, eats it with anything but loves it on apples, basically dessert
Lemon pepper grilled chicken and rice
So many salads, loves that you can just throw shit in a bowl and call it a recipe. Likes strawberries and almonds
Lemon poppyseed muffins
Shrimp and bitter melon stir fry
Danse; mixed bag. One on hand, small town diner tastes. Simple, cheap, good ol' American food. On the other, he's doomed to be a soldier in every universe he's in, so...maybe he picks up some tastes and dishes from places he's toured. Gets a weird pallate that shoots in all directions and makes you wonder what it's like in that thick skull. One day he's a good American boy with pancakes and steak, the next he's eating cake mix dry and drinking tahini from a flask.
Anything BBQ, but a pulled pork devotee
Hot coffee so heavily creamed and sugars it looks like milk. He likes the twix combo of chocolate, shortbread, and caramel flavors
Prepackaged baked goods a la Hostess, fucks up little Debbie oatmeal cookies
Apple and pecan pie
Menemen—Turkish dish, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, bell peppers, spices to taste, and (controversially) onions. Adds sausage and cheese, eats it with a fork or spoon (its meant to be eaten with bread)
Khachapuri—Georgian cheesy bread with egg. Eats with a knife and fork. (its meant to be eaten with the bread crust)
Smores pop tarts
Beef and potato stew
Rice bowl with fried egg and avocado, bonus points if it has bacon
Straight cookie dough/brownie/cake batter, usually when he's black out drunk and cannot shame himself out of eating raw egg products.
Deacon; Very childhood comfort food. Y'know, things you had as a kid, but probably grew out of a bit? Eats out of gas stations/takeout frequently. Very open flavor pallete, has tried everything he's had the chance to. Likes one-handed food, stuff you can have the other hand free for. Doesn’t really have a 'theme', has broad horizons for his diet. Likes lighter, mild flavors, though. He eats lightly and on the go a lot.
Hot/corn dogs, taste in hot dog toppings varies
Egg salad sandwiches
French fries and vanilla ice cream, classic combo
Mango sticky rice
Cornbread with any accompaniments. Likes honey or chili, thinks if you have a drink with cornbread, you ain't a real cornhead
Penne alla vodka
Cucumber salad. This could mean a salad with cucumbers, that trending Asian recipe where you cut the cumber so its springy, or eating a cucumber like a hotdog.
Fried mushrooms
Usually just drinks water but will have gator/powerade when he's working. Likes purple flavor
Captain crunch cereal, loves all cereal though. Prefers the kibble stuff to the berries. Starts philosophical debates about the morality of Trix commercials vs Lucky Charms commercials
Gage; His favorite foods reflect his upbringing. Coastal swamp cuisine, cheap and made in bulk. Take Danse's pallate and hyperlocalize it, and then lower the budget by a good amount. Things he grew up eating. Would gradually replace his favorites with pricier, 'less embarrassing' dishes, distances himself from his origins. However, takes care to not looked too loaded. Smokey and savory flavors are his thing, likes more spice than people expect.
Doberge cake, which is layered with pudding, often half-chocolate and half-lemon
Red beans and rice, with stewed pork if they could afford it
Blackened fish of any kind, liked it with cilantro-lime rice
Steak with potatoes and/or eggs
Chronic iced tea drinker like Curie, though he prefers the bitter kinds
Scallops
Brussels sprouts defender and will fight for their honor
Peaches
Was introduced to curry during a business meeting/outing. Could drink that shit from a glass, has it with potatoes and porkchops.
Lobster anything. This is one of those 'less embarresing' things, but he genuinely enjoys a good lobster roll. Even if he prefers a freshly-caught lobster bisque. Again, something he had growing up, something he pushes away.
Hancock; Similar to Deacon, but favors fatty, greasy food. No, it's not the drugs, that's just his metabolism. He's a skinny twink, always starving, can never put on weight. Eats as much as Danse, who is a big guy and needs more calories than most. He's really into street food and foreign dishes, won't eat at a restaurant if they speak fluent English or have good customer service. IYKYK. Very comfort food heavy, lots of "this would slap with Netflix at 2 am"
A classic oxtail, mac and cheese, and collard green take out combo
Any and all American-chinese take out, usually gets eggplant tofu with chow mein and cream cheese rangoons
"Walking tacos", those things where you open a small bag of chips and dump White People taco makings in. Probably just tips the whole thing into his mouth
Yakitori, Japanese chicken skewers, popular bar food
Bloody Mary cocktails
Pizza, will fight for the honor of pineapple. Would really be into how Brazil does pizza
Frozen yogurt and ice cream, piles with toppings
Breakfast sandwiches or wraps. Egg, meat, cheese, doesn't matter the time nor specifics.
Jam donuts, loves cherry fillings
Puppy chow/muddy buddies, chex cereal covered in chocolate and powdered sugar. Eats his weight in them if not careful
MacCready; forces himself to learn how to cook for Duncan's sake, but for himself...good God. It's horrible. Eats like garbage. Would never drink water if not to set an example. Take out, frozen food, so much candy and soda. After Duncan, broadens his horizons. Finds he really likes soups. Just throw shit in a pot and it works. Eats on a budget, so that's a life-saver. Doesn't have a preferred flavor pallete, aside from his love of candy.
Meat lover's pizza. Thinks pineapple has no place on pizza
Used to drink Mountain Dew and diet coke, replaced it with iced teas and more organic fruit juices for the sake of his teeth
Chicken soup, either from a can, or homemade. Either way, slaps. If homemade, blends veggies for a hidden veggie stock. For him, Duncan is a lot better at eating veggies, MacCready needs to trick himself.
Sour rainbow ropes
Cookie crisp cereal, thinks whoever came up with it deserved the sloppiest head. Incredible design, no notes
Cheese and sour cream chips
Famous Amos cookies
Eggo waffles
Gnocchi is God to him. Its superior to all noodles and makes your Shit In The Fridge soup 1000 times better.
Rice pudding is cheap, easy, and a surprisingly efficient sweet-tooth satisfier. Makes it with pumpkin spice mix or chocolate.
Nick; Home-cooked meals all the way. Could kill himself with cheese and die happy. Lots of easy meals and snacking so he can keep working, but will treat himself to a nice, hard-earned dinner when he has the time and energy. Likes himself the smokey, the fresh, or the sour. Probably knows all the best sub shops in the city, probably in a turf war with regulars of rival shops. Jewish delicatessens are like church to him.
Lasanga. Most of his freezer space is lasagna. Eats so much of it. He's lactose intolerant. It hurts but it hurts so good
Latkes. Fried potato things, kind of like hashbrowns, except the potato is mashed/ground instead of grated. And yes. Also pastrami. But those little potato bitches...mmmph.
Red velvet muffins with cream cheese frosting.
Fried cheese in any capacity
A prosciutto, arugula, brie, and fig sandwich
Pickled pearl onions
Cobb salad
Black coffee. Temp doesn't matter, because he's going to forget it until its room temp.
Has been known to enter fugue states and consume an absurd amount of Chicago style hot dogs
Scones or just plain bread with butter and jams
Piper; Broke college student trying to make it as a reporter. Her tastebuds are fucked, they salivate not for flavor, or texture, but for those good, good low prices. Piper's diet is almost entirely snackfood or takeout. If she ever cooks, it's for Nat. But when taking care of just herself, Piper eats from a box or bag. When she does cook, it's very simple meals. Loves her carbs and her fruit flavors
Chicken Ramen with canned chicken and frozen broccoli chucked in. Also makes this for Nat
Hot cheetos, eats with chopsticks
Spaghetti and meatballs
Fruit smoothies/smoothie bowls, blends in veggies as well for the nutrition
Coka cola and anything from Fanta, loves fruit sodas
Anything carbs and I mean that. Eats a lot of bread, pasta, cakes, potatoes...they're the sweetheart of anyone on a budget.
Buffalo cauliflower, likes it more than Buffalo chicken
Chewing gum. Fruit flavors only, hates mint gum. Likes mint elsewhere, just not in gum.
Nickle-nips and other "jelly/juice in a wax package" candies. Likes the charm of it, also, free chewing wax
Suckers/lollipops, big on hard candy in general but the stick satisfies her smoking habit.
Preston; A mix of easy depression/bulk meals and dishes from his childhood. Lots of spices, cooks with a lot of straight peppers. Tends to eat his food 'raw', not made into a dish. Again, easy and quick to eat. Also tends to buy pre-prepared stuff for the same reason, buys more fruits and veggies and just eats them straight. Doesn't care about eating healthy, he just lacks energy to cook most days.
I have no choice to explain this as it has no name. Casserole dish, layer of mashed potatoes, layer of shredded or chunked chicken, layer of white breakfast gravy or brown poultry gravy, top with drop biscuits. It's buttery, its savory, it is white as snow. Easy, cheap, one ladlefull is dinner. You'll get a few meals out of it, and it's so filling you have like, five minutes before you're stuffed. I call it gut-glue.
Dirty rice
Eggs scrambled with spinach
Jollof/jambalaya
Veggies and hummus or ranch
Various fruits and berries such as grapes, cherries, blackberries, and oranges
Shakshouka, eggs poached in spicy tomato sauce and eaten with bread
Chicken biscuits, crackers dusted with, like, chicken bouillon? They taste like a chicken Ramen packet sneezed on a ritz
Slurpees/Icees/those syruped gas station ice drinks
Straight peppers, eats bell peppers like apples. Eats pickled jalapeños and scotch bonnets to feel something. Drinks the liquid in pickle jars instead of alcohol, or mixes it with gelatin and makes pickle jello.
X6-88; Pretensious rich asshole who eats like it. He rarely cooks for himself, probably has a personal chef or something. Maybe his work has their own restaurants, like Google. Eats mostly vegetables, but his favorite foods skew from "Dubai Influencer" to "12 year old who earned too much lawn mowing money and was let loose in a convenience store." So much sugar. Willy Wonka's factory is his idea of heaven and until it exists, he's an atheist.
Raw meats. Steak and tuna tartar, sashimi, and sushi
Braised duck with cherries
Nduja, a spicy pork sausage spread, has it with flatbreads
Oysters. Eats them all fancy in public, eats them from a tin with doritos at home
Anything from Hostess, Little Debbie, those brands. Fucking anything. However, would kill a man for any kind of Swiss roll
Chocolate milk
Gummies, very picky with brands, hates the harder kinds like Haribo. Wants his gummies soft as a marshmellow
Cadbury eggs
Milano dark chocolate cookies
Gushers

Part 7 LFT
Sanji woke at five as he usually did, everyone, but Luffy, who was on watch, was still asleep for another few hours. Zoro and Nami would awake in about two hours and Ussop three. Luffy was unpredictable in all things. Sanji liked to start his mornings early a habit ingrained in him from years of working at the Baratie. He took a hot shower before getting dressed for the day.
He lit a cigarette and the stove top, a cup of black tea while he planed the crews meals for the day was how he preferred to start his days. He sliced soome bread and placed it into a small with some butter. While he waited for the water to boil and the bread to toast, he took what was left in the jerky jar out and refilled it with the fresh stuff. Sanji opened the galley door and held the jerky out.
"Luffy meat!" Sanji yelled, waving the dried meat in the air.
One very stretchy arm came from the crows nest and snatched the meat from Sanji's hand. Now that he had temporarily appeased the boundless appetite of their captain Sanji went back inside. He took out the notebook he used to plan meals, the notebook with the crews preferred foods and his feathered pen.
He poured the hot water into a tea cup watching as the water turned a nice rich dark brown as the tea bag seeped. Sanji grabbed some of the mikan jam, he preferred raspberry but he was out. He flipped the bread to toast on the side. Turning the stove off he slid the bread onto a plate. He carried everything over to the table, he didn't really eat with the crew, usually too busy making sure everyone else was fed. It was his job after all.
Sanji knew there provisions were getting low, he had two more chickens, a large bag of rice, plenty of fish, plenty of minka, some spaces, a few veg, some fruit, a large bag of oats, bacon he had sliced yesterday, half a ham, enough sliced meat to make jerky for two more days, he had engh ingredients to make bread for the next three days and few other odds and ends. They needed to head to an island soon.
Sanji could make oatmeal for breakfast, with fresh fruit, toast, and meat. He noticed that none of them had mentioned how they liked their eggs he could ask them while they ate. Lunch could be seafood fried rice. It was one of his favorite things to make. It held so much meaning to him it was one of Zeffs recipes. Fuck he missed that old man and all the rest of chefs at the Baratie. Even Patty. Sanji flipped through Zoro's pages. Yesterday he had seen something that sounded really good, a miso glazed fish. He hadn't specified what kind but a nice fatty fish would work perfectly. Perhaps a nice cod, Sanji absolutely wasn't making it because he liked the asshole. Sanji was not going to think about the sex they had last night. He refused to. It didn't matter how mind-blowing it had been or how much he wanted more.
Sanji scowled and put his cigarette out in the ashtray and the notebooks and stood up from the bench, the very bench they had fucked just last night, and took care of his dishes and put his notebooks away. Time to start breakfast.

O’Chunks scooted back from the edge of the rocky awning, watching the huge raindrops slide lazily through the muggy afternoon steam. The inside of the shallow cave was hardly drier, but they couldn’t do much better on this world. He squeezed the thin beginner’s book between his sweaty fingers, trying to hold it in Mimi’s view without subjecting it to the rain.
The mimic in question, meanwhile, jumped between turbid puddles collecting in shallow dishes on the stone’s surface. He took great, slow leaps, trying to disrupt as much water as he could with his pudgy, runny, wide feet. Murky water darkened his overalls all the way up to the chest.
“Mimi,” O’Chunks called, lifting the book gently again. “Come on o’er here, lad.”
Mimi looked over, and O’Chunks saw the lad’s eyes trace the book’s slow arc- such an unnatural fluid motion to the face- before he returned his attention to his puddle-splashing game.
O’Chunks sighed. Nastasia would be irritated about Mimi tracking all that grit to the inside of a tent. But, of course, that would never stop him.
Both of their heads turned up toward a commotion between the enormous raindrops: some kind of bird coalesced from one drop and flitted through the air until it dove into the next drop over. The raindrop bounced through the air, rippling and wobbling, before crashing into another and exploding into a brief shower over Mimi’s head. He squealed with glee, throwing his gooey loose arms out and spinning in the cool relief. His arms stretched and widened to resemble the bird’s wings.
O’Chunks took a deep, slow breath and put the book aside to dig into his pocket. Mimi’s focus immediately snapped to him, and he waddled over as O’Chunks procured a small bag of jerky. O’Chunks handed over a shred of meat, which Mimi crammed into his mouth with all the desperation of a ravenous wolf.
“I never had anything like this, back at the lab,” he gurgled around his chewy treat. He smacked his tongue against the roof of his mouth experimentally.
O’Chunks tugged at his beard, keeping the rest of the bag out of the child’s sight. “Really? ‘S a good way teh preserve yer meat.”
“Preserve?”
“Make it last a long time.” He turned his hand idly. “So yeh don’t always need t’get fresh food whenever yeh wanna eat.”
Mimi shrugged and held out his hand for another piece. “Mergath would just throw a chicken or somethin’ in my cell every now and then.”
O’Chunks’ brows raised, but other than that he took care not to react. Mimi had never shared that much before, and so casually, so he rewarded the boy with two more strips of jerky. Mimi watched him with wide eyes, and when O’Chunks looked back at him, he had grown brows to raise as well. O’Chunks snorted.
As Mimi chewed, he stared at O’Chunks’ hand as it wandered back toward his beard. “How d’ya make this stuff?”
“What, th’jerky?”
“Yeah.”
O’Chunks gently picked up the book between his fingers and waved it. “Yeh learn from a recipe, like in a book.”
Mimi ignored the book. “Oh, boring. I want more now.” He held out his hand once again.
O’Chunks paused to think over his options. The conversation sat at a precarious crossroads, and he had precious few seconds to assert his authority. His eye flicked upward to the giant droplets outside, and he watched the water birds playfully dive between them.
“Well… what about those birds, then?” He nodded his head toward them, and Mimi turned to look.
“They’re fun! What about them?” Mimi chirped a few times, a burbling sound almost similar to the birds’ calls.
O’Chunks rubbed his fingers along his beard. “We’re not here fer long. Yeh only got a few minutes teh learn about them, ‘ey? An’ if yeh want t’blend in, yeh need a lot more’n jus’ a few minutes can give yeh.”
Mimi frowned. “I can copy a lot in a whole few minutes!”
“Aye, yer very good at what yeh do,” O’Chunks agreed, with a dip of his head. “But I noticed yeh don’t much move like one.”
“Huh?” Mimi’s frown deepened. His skin boiled slowly outward. “I can too move like a birdy!”
O’Chunks held up a placating hand, and Mimi stopped boiling. “What if yeh had t’copy one, but yeh weren’t allowed teh see it first?”
The mimic grew pensive at that, putting a drippy hand to his chin. He smacked on his jerky while he mulled O’Chunks’ scenario over.
O’Chunks lifted the book. “Tha’s what the books’re for, laddie. Yeh learn about, eh, inside structure, ‘n behavior, all wit’out ever havin’ teh meet what yer copyin’.”
Mimi grasped at O’Chunks’ pocket, and he rewarded the boy’s interest with another piece of jerky. When he glanced over at the group huddled by the tents, he spotted the Count’s head turned toward Nastasia and Dimentio’s game, but one of his ears twisted outward, in their direction.
After Mimi had crammed the next piece into his mouth as if he’d never had food in his life, O’Chunks continued. “Books can also teach yeh how people act, better’n me or Nassy can.”
Mimi brightened. “You mean I can skip talking to Nassy!?”
“You bet,” O’Chunks forced out with a grin.
The boy sat up straight, resting his wobbly weight on the legs of his overalls.
O’Chunks sighed, and rubbed his head, but he put the book in front of Mimi all the same and opened it to the first page. “Alrigh’. Let’s get started on th’letters, first. We’ll jus’ do a few today…”
“Only a few?” Mimi tilted his head.
“Well, o’course,” O’Chunks replied, feigning confusion. “’M only gonna keep yeh a few minutes.”
“Oh…” Mimi thought that over. Then he stared down at the book. “So… we can do more later. Okay, but you better have a lot of that meat for me!”

Saw this on Twitter and thought it was cool, so I answered them for Wolfram. 😁
Tumblr media
1. Favorite Vegetable - Cauliflower. Specifically roasted, fried, or in curries. 😋
2. How many blankets on bed? - One, which he will hog if it's cold.
3. Do they know how to set a table? - He worked at inns, so yes, but also that's really dependant on culture so he would probably adjust depending on where he was and ask questions if he didn't know.
4. If they had to dye their hair another color, what would it be? - Something unnatural - maybe teal or deep purple? But he prefers his natural black hair.
5. Generally how much would they tip at a restaurant? - As long as they didn't do anything majorly wrong? 20% minimum every time.
6. What gas station food do they buy for themselves? - Flaming Hot Cheetos and coconut water.
7. What gas station food do they buy for someone else? - Whatever they ask for? I bet Raubahn likes beef jerky.
8. Least Favorite Smell - Burning flesh, it's kind of a lesser trigger. 😅🥹
9. Is there something distinct about their teeth? - Other than the miracle that they're all still intact? No.
10. What pyramid scheme are they most likely to fall for? - None, he's naturally pretty suspicious of that kind of thing. If someone was begging on the street without needing the money he would definitely fall for that.
11. Favorite Soup - Chili (fight me!) 😈
12. Least Favorite Instrument - Does not exist, he loves music. Favorite is guitar.
13. They buy 5 things at the grocery store. What are they? - Chicken thighs, tomatoes, onions, chilis, garam masala.
14. What temperature so they keep their thermostat at? - IRL would be 69 (winter, laughing as he sets it), 72 (summer). Raubahn turns it up when he's not looking though. 😂
15. In what order do they get dressed? [socks, underwear, pants] - Underwear, shirt, pants, socks, jacket, weapons. ⚔️
16. Favorite Tree - 😏 After that NSFW shoot I have to say Palm trees...
17. Are they good at wrapping presents? - Does putting it in a cute bag count?
18. Do they have any food allergies, or the cilantro gene? - No allergies but he does suffer from the cilantro gene. 😔
19. How do they kiss? [Chaste, too much tongue.] - I guess he's a bit of a lip sucker/nibbler? Often giving forehead, neck, and shoulder kisses as well. Also why is this on the list? 😳
20. How do they handle an awkward moment in front of others? - Cracks a joke, trying to lighten the mood. It is often inappropriate and completely backfires. 😅
21. What is the gross habit they have but no one knows about? - Doesn't sweep up clipped nails. 🤷‍♀️
22. Would they be able to parallel park? - Yes, eventually, but a bit stressful so he avoids it.
23. What is a niche YouTube genre they would enjoy? [asmr, mukbang, etc] - He'd definatley be addicted to recipe videos. Notifications enabled for Epicurious. 👨‍🍳
24. If they were going to make fun of someone, what would it be for? - He's very sarcastic, so just about anything. He likes teasing Raubahn and knows how to make him blush so will often whisper things to him before he has to give a speech. Very amused watching his husband trying to collect his thoughts while addressing a crowd. 🤭
25. Favorite Swear Word - Fuck 👍
26. Least Favorite Book - He doesn't read much. Uh... I guess that old Mhachi tome he read to summon the voidsent that killed his family? 😅🥹
27. An aspect they do not like about their partner but love them anyway for? - Sometimes Rau talks down about himself, which Wolf hates to hear since he disagrees but tries to listen anyway so he can give him some words of affirmation after. 😌
28. Favorite Jewelry - RINGS. He wears multiple on each hand. Good thing he's not a pugilist like his mom was. 🤜
29. Least Favorite Texture/Fabric - That really scratch weaved wool. Also, burlap. 😬
30. If you could describe them only using kinds of fast food what would they be? - I don't know what this means... A burger and fries? 🍔🍟

lore post!!
infodumping under the cut
So Concorde (brooding one on the right) and Albu (left) live in this place called Hesti. (Or more specifically, they live in an outpost in the middle of nowhere on the farthest border of Hesti.) This post is about Hesti's economy. And I'm not talking about stock prices or gross domestic product; I mean economy in its most basic anthropological form: how food is acquired and distributed to a culture.
Hesti, climatically, geographically, in some ways socially, is a lot like Italy. But Hesti's shared dragon and human population makes things interesting. And by interesting I of course mean difficult.
How do you feed two hungry populations with limited land? Creatively. And with lots of olive oil.
Humans are omnivores, but I'm going to assume that you know what humans eat already. Hesti dragons are also omnivores, but, like dogs and cats, prefer meat. The problem is that meat is way too expensive to eat it exclusively. Not even the richest of noble families can afford to have a full portion of meat for every meal. The reason is that raising livestock requires a lot of land and a lot of feed. The math just doesn't work out; there's too much demand and not enough resources. Hesti has come up with many solutions to this problem.
First of all, they limit meat. Except for the most important religious festival days, they never eat a whole portion of meat cooked by itself. The meat is stretched out as far as it can go, lasting for multiple meals, thinned out with grain and starches. Stew is a very common way to do this. Sometimes the meat is "diluted" so much that it's more like a savory flavoring than anything. In Hesti, they never waste the meat. They'll use the good parts, obviously, but also the tripe/organs; they carefully preserve the leftover fat and grease (which they'll later use how we might use lard or butter); use the bones (to get at the marrow and also to make bone broth); they'll cook as much as they can along with the meat to transfer the meat flavor over; they will make broth. Sometimes, they will instead cook the meat, cut it into very thin slices/strips, and coat it liberally in salt, which acts as a preservative. The result resembles jerky and can be useful for journeys.
(If acquiring meat is this difficult an endeavor for dragons, it's nigh-impossible for humans. Beef is a lost cause, though humans can reliably manage to get chicken. The main thing they do is not to purchase meat at a market, but to hunt small game. Often, this requires the local noble's permission if she owns the forest.)
Second, they supplement. Grain is the main way: just as grain is a staple crop for humans, so it is for dragons in Hesti. They use flour for a wide variety of purposes, including as a thickening agent and to make bread. Both dragons and humans eat a lot of bread. The dragons don't really like bread very much, but they eat a lot of it. They make bread more palatable by dipping it in soup/broth, putting lard on it, or by drowning it in olive oil.
Those living near the coast (which is most of the Hesti population) will also eat fish, which they consider inferior to land-based meat. Fishing is a pretty big industry. Things like shellfish, oysters, freshwater fish, etc. are generally ignored by dragons, though humans eat them.
Eggs are an important part of their diet. Poultry is great, of course, but they found that they could get a lot more out of a hen by keeping it alive (and collecting its eggs) than by immediately slaughtering it. Chicken coops are everywhere in Hesti, from large egg-harvesting businesses to the backyards of peasant families. If there's a way to prepare and serve an egg, it's been done in Hesti. Most recipes involve at least one egg. They are inescapable.
Fruits and vegetables are also a part of their diet, and goes as you would expect. They do also ferment their fruits: their favorite is fermented grapes. They love their wine, and they make plenty of it. Hesti's countryside is well-endowed with vineyards.
One thing Hesti dragons won't consume is dairy. Since they're not mammals, they're lactose intolerant. While the human population loves their milk, cheese, and cream, the dragons find it all off-putting.

These past few years, I have become a huge advocate for feeding fresh food to dogs to enhance their lives. However, you don't exactly have to transition your dog to a 100% fresh food diet in order to gain the benefits of fresh food.
Simply adding fresh food to your dog's kibble can go a long way in improving their nutrition and overall health. For instance, one study done a group of dogs in 2005 revealed that feeding vegetables just three times a week had significantly lowered their risk of developing cancer, compared to dogs who were only fed kibble.
Asian markets, in particular, have some very beneficial fresh food items that aren't typically found at your local grocery store. These food items, however, are not intended to fully replace your dog's food. Remember - too much of something good can be bad for you.
Instead, they should be offered in moderation as treats, or just small amounts topped over an already complete and balance meal. As a general rule of thumb, treats/toppers should never make more than 10% of your dog's overall diet.

Bok choy (Chinese cabbage) is full of essential vitamins and minerals needed to support a dog’s eyesight, cardiac function, digestion, bone strength, and immunity. Sulfurophane - a compound found in bok choy and other cruciferous vegetables - has been linked to inhibiting cancer cell growth, lowering blood pressure, and activating the nuclear factor Nrf2 which prevents the development of diabetes and its complications. Bok choy’s low calorie, high fiber content also make it a good option for a snack/food topper for dogs who need to control their weight.
Preparation: Lightly steam or boil for better nutrient absorption. Cooking will also help neutralize the enzyme (myrosinase) that can decrease thyroid function. You should also chop/trim their long leaves to avoid choking hazards.

Goji berries (wolfberries) are rich in amino acids, carotenoids which support healthy vision, and polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and cardio-protective properties. Studies on goji berry supplementation in animals have shown that it has the potential to help lower cholesterol, protect the liver by increasing hepatic antioxidant activity, as well as enhance metabolic homeostasis and prevent diabetes-induced renal inflammation.
Preparation: Remove stems if still attached and cut/mash berries. If dried, soak in water until softened to avoid passing straight through the GI tract and losing the benefits of its nutrients.

Offal refers to the internal organs and variety meats of animals that can be consumed as food (i.e. lung, heart, kidney, liver, gizzard, head, feet, etc.) The word 'offal' literally translates to "fall off", and thus, whatever falls off the skeleton during the butchering process. Offal is densely loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fats - so small amounts go a long way. Pet owners who use these as ingredients as part of a complete and balanced recipe should keep in mind that each organ is unique in its nutrient profile - dependent on the animal it is sourced from and how it is raised. For example, grass-fed beef may contain less fat yet more vitamin A and E than grain-fed beef, and beef liver has significantly more vitamin A and copper than chicken liver.
Preparation: Boil in water or low-sodium broth. May also be baked or dehydrated into jerky treats.

Oyster mushrooms are a good source of protein and fiber, and vitamins that support healthy digestion. They can help to increase satiety and maintain healthy body weight. Oyster mushrooms are also full of pantothenic acid which help to maintain cognitive function and healthy skin/coat. Beta-glucans derived from oyster mushrooms have also been shown to reduce inflammation and strengthen immunity.
Preparation: Lightly sauté or boil in water or low-sodium broth. Raw or dried mushrooms can be difficult for dogs to digest.

Purple sweet potato (Ube or Okinawan sweet potato) are typically found in grocery stores more commonly during the fall/winter seasons. They contain more antioxidants than regular sweet potatoes due to the anthocyanins that cause their violet hue. While all potato varieties may impact blood sugar levels because of their high carbohydrate content, purple potatoes may exert less of an effect because of their high polyphenol content that decreases the absorption of starches in the intestines. In addition, they have been linked to improving blood pressure, likely due to their high potassium content.
Preparation: Peel skin and bake until soft for better digestibility and to prevent intestinal blockages. May be boiled and drained to reduce oxalate intake for dogs with a history of bladder stones, or prone to urinary issues.

Quail eggs are small, yet packed with protein and essential fatty acids, and have a higher ratio of iron, riboflavin, and vitamin b12 than chicken eggs. It is even safe and can be beneficial to feed them with the shells included for added calcium. Quail eggs have been linked to improving bone growth/healing, reducing liver damage, and increasing energy levels. While some studies have shown evidence of quail eggs treating allergies in humans and mice, they may be less likely to trigger reactions than chicken eggs in dogs who have poultry sensitivities.
Preparation: Wash thoroughly, and handle gently as they are more fragile due to their tiny size. Cooking methods are similar to that of chicken eggs, yet require less time.

Sardines contain all the amino acids your dog needs for optimal health, making it a "complete protein". They are also notorious for being rich in omegas and coenzyme q-10, which help support heart and brain health. What sets sardines apart from other fish, too, is that they are smaller and more short-lived species than larger predator fish and may have less of a risk for mercury poisoning. Because they are so small and have soft bones, you can feed them whole to your pets.
Preparation: Bake or dehydrate. If already purchased as dried, be sure to make sure there is no added salt or seasonings. If canned, preferably those stored in water only.

Sushi rice (Japanese sticky rice) has a high proportion of starch and moisture, giving it a stickier texture when cooked. Sushi rice has virtually zero fat, yet still provides a desirable balance of nutrients while remaining gentle on a dog’s digestive tract. Its higher iron content than regular rice supports healthy blood circulation and can provide more energy to dogs who are recovering from illness. Cooling/refrigerating the rice before serving also enables more retrogradation of prebiotic fiber, helping to lower glycemic responses and maximize intestinal function.
Preparation: Rinse thoroughly and soak in water (with 1tbsp apple cider vinegar - optional) before cooking. If you don’t have a rice cooker or instant pot, boil on the stove until the water is completely absorbed. May be cooked with bone broth for added flavor. You can also use small amounts of beet root powder, turmeric, or blue spirulina to add color and nutrients.

Mallory’s Tocino Jerky started on the tropical island of Cebu, in the Philippines, from a traditional tocino recipe passed down through the family for generations.
Company owners Lory and Malcolm spent years perfecting this time-honored recipe to create the best-tasting meat snack in the Southern Hemisphere.
In 2014, Lory and Malcolm made their handcrafted jerky available to the public when they founded Mallory’s Tocino Jerky in Queensland.
Using locally sourced, grain-fed meat from their company headquarters in Narangba, Queensland, Lory and Malcolm started making new flavors with different types of meat, including Australia’s first-ever chicken jerky.
