I think it’s so important to be firm without sounding like an asshole. And I'm not even saying this from a "we need to learn to say things in a way that doesn't upset anyone" perspective, someone's always gonna feel upset at something and sometimes it's not even justified, it's more about making an effort not to purposely sound shitty.

I feel that people are going down a path like "NOBODY'S feelings are your responsibility and if they say they are it’s FORCEFUL EMOTIONAL LABOR, say WHATEVER you feel like because only your intentions matter and the others' interpretation is NOT your problem", and there's a concerning lack of nuance in this thought process, I mean, people need to understand that we really can't be trapped by unrealistic expectations of what others will think/feel, but we need—as social creatures living in a community—to reflect on the impact of our words/actions on the people we care about. I see folks taking a very important discussion about, for example, non-violent communication and emotional responsibility (which is ultimately about empathy and compassion for oneself and others) and turning it into an individualistic, alienating weapon, but disguising it with self-love speech. And it is exhausting.
