Job Offer in Brazil: Researcher, Rooted in Trust

The Rooted in Trust project works to combat COVID-19 rumors and misinformation in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Iraq, Zimbabwe, Colombia, Brazil, Mali, DRC, Sudan and South Sudan. We work to create impact at the local level and inform approaches to rumor management at the global level. The project is supported by a Global Technical Advisory team made up of media, humanitarian, data science and information management experts.

In Phase 1 of the project, we collected more than 19 thousand rumors in 14 languages and supported more than 30 local trusted information providers. In this critical phase of the pandemic, we will build on these efforts to listen and respond to the information challenges faced by vulnerable groups in humanitarian contexts, encouraging open dialogue between citizens and scientists and stronger and more collaborative partnerships between information providers (such as local media) and humanitarian and health sources.

The Researcher will manage the implementation of research activities in Brazil. The Researcher will have a strong focus on how Indigenous, Afro-Brazilian and LGBTQIA+ groups communicate to access information about COVID-19 related issues and how their use of online media intersects with their use of traditional media and other sources. Research activities include desk research, social media monitoring, Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, surveys, capacity assessment interviews and field observations. The research will help to inform public health and humanitarian response agencies to better communicate key messages to the at-risk population.

Hello! I’ve turned down all of my job offers (FIVE) I feel like I’m going to exhaust all of my options but I’ve had a weird bad gut feeling about all of them. The most recent one, I turned it down because it made me feel really anxious, but after declining, I felt worse. It was in a bad area — but did I let my fear and anxiety of being victimized ruin a great job? I know you shouldn’t make decisions based on fear, but I also prioritize my safety. I don’t know how to let the ‘worst case what ifs’ not control my life. I’m a very anxious person particularly about health and safety so the fear of being victimized in the city of this job freaked me out but now I’m jobless and dealing with regret because it was a phenomenal job

I do not think there is anything at all wrong with turning down a job due to not feeling physically safe in the area where the job was. I do get how you feel afterwards though with turning it down and feeling great regret – although I do not work, I do a lot of volunteer work with an animal rescue group and sometimes, well often I will sign myself up to help out at events only to let fear and anxiety get in the way and cancelling or backing out at the last minute, leading me feel intense regret and just plain horrible.

I know that you must be feeling frustrated with yourself for turning down your latest job offer but like you said you didn’t feel safe in the area and was scared of being victimised in the city where the job was located. I think that safety should always come first, so please try and be kind to yourself at this difficult time.

In the future, when you are offered other job positions, perhaps you could write out a pro’s and con’s list about the positives and negatives of accepting the job offer. The fact that you had been offered 5 job offers makes me think that it won’t be too long until you are offered another one so just try to hang in there OK? And if by chance the area where the job is makes you feel anxious or unsafe in anyway again, it is OK to speak to the manger or person that has offered you the job position about this. For example, for the latest job you turned down, perhaps you could have spoken up about the area the place the job was located and asked for ways you could keep yourself safe not only at work but ask for any advice on getting to and from work. And yes, this may then influence on if you get the job or not but all you can do is ask about any concerns that you may have and whatever happens from there happens.

So, when you are offered your next job position, trying thinking about not only the positives. So for example if you would enjoy the job, pay and if there are any opportunity to grow within the job position like future training/ education to move up. But remember that safety should be everyone’s first priority so this should also be thought carefully about, but in saying this writing down why the area where the job is may be unsafe, and think about if there are anyways where you can make things safer for you if that makes sense?
