After that night, I took a role in a United Artists drama I had little interest in only to be around her. She was filming a romantic picture with a dark twist, The One for Me, at Paramount and we would spend weekends together at my place in Palm Springs. I would drive up to her on Friday night when we got off the sets and we would head to our private haven.

We didn’t have to be together only behind closed doors since now no one would object or conjecture much about me, a happily married woman, paying a visit - or receiving, for that matter - my friend and his fiancé with my lovely husband. The worst thing the rags said was that Evelyn was still friends with “America’s Sweetheart” but they were more interested in the big rock at her finger and her upcoming fifth wedding. Especially after John and I got picked as best man and maid of honor.

I remember that day. It was the beginning of May, Harry and Evelyn invited us over for dinner at her mansion in Beverly Hills. It was our first double date, so to speak, and it was also the first time I saw my love slightly intimidated by my husband. I mean, John was the sweetest guy you could ask for but he was tall and bulky, a boxer nose and big hands: I couldn’t exactly blame her for her instinctive reaction, especially after what she shared with me of Don. John would have never been capable even to conceive that kind of violence but he had always been fiercely protective of me, that’s for sure. He greeted Harry with a loving embrace then moved closer to Evelyn. The shift in his attitude was unmistakable.

“So, you must be Evelyn,” he said, towering over her. “Celia told me a lot about you.”

Police will be barred from asking for rape victims’ therapy, health, school or other personal records unless it is “absolutely necessary” under new laws to reverse plummeting conviction rates.

Ministers announced the rules as part of a new victims and prisoners law which also gives victims a right to refuse to provide the information without the prospect of the police threatening to drop their case.

The moves will mirror laws already in place that limit police access to victims’ mobile phones to prevent intrusive “digital strip searches” of their private lives, which have been blamed for deterring women from continuing with a prosecution.

The Ministry of Justice said it aimed to end “expansive fishing expeditions” for information that was not relevant to the investigation and could be used to undermine the credibility of the victim.

Preventing ‘invasive requests’

The number of sexual offences including rape have jumped by a third to nearly 195,000 since before the pandemic ,while the proportion resulting in a charge have fallen to as low as 1.3 per cent.

Since ministers pledged to tackle the crisis, the charge rate has increased, although up to 60 per cent of victims withdraw from the prosecution before it comes to court amid concerns at intrusions into their private lives, delays of two years or more in bringing cases to trial, and the trauma of reliving the attack in the witness box.

The new measures to protect from “invasive requests” will cover any official “third-party” information on victims such as education, medical, social services and counselling records.

Police will be allowed to request access only if it is “absolutely necessary and proportionate” to the investigation. They will also be required by law to inform victims about what type of information is being requested, why and how it will be used.

It will dictate that any victim must be informed their refusal to hand over their phones will not automatically lead to a police investigation being dropped.

Police face threat of legal action

If the police fail to abide by the statutory duties in the legislation, they would be in breach of the law and could be open to a legal challenge, according to John Edwards, the Information Commissioner.

Alex Chalk, the Justice Secretary, said: “This important reform will end invasive unnecessary requests for therapy notes for rape victims and give them the confidence to seek the help they need earlier, free from the fear that what they share in the process of healing could be weaponised against them.

“The Victims and Prisoners Bill is ensuring victims are treated as participants in, not just spectators of, the justice system – improving support for them while overhauling the parole system to better protect the public from the most dangerous offenders.”

Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, said: “It is simply unacceptable that victims of some of the most traumatic crimes have had significant amounts of their personal records unnecessarily requested.”

The changes followed a Home Office consultation in 2022 which showed that almost 90 per cent of respondents were in favour of introducing a statutory duty on police forces to only make necessary and proportionate requests for the disclosure of third-party information.

The news of Evelyn’s wedding hurt like a knife driven straight into my heart. I should have expected it to be bound to happen after the gossip the ladies shared in that cafe but it wounded me. It was clear how little healing I had done since our breakup.

Another husband, and a real marriage not some Las Vegas thing. Not that thinking of Las Vegas helped anyway, quite the contrary.

I kept staring at the tabloid open in front of me numbly. It was night, and once again I had nowhere to run. I took a swig of whiskey and let it burn all the way down my throat. It was nothing compared to the pain spreading within me.

Evelyn planting a kiss on Rex’s cheek as he made some kind of toast. Evelyn laughing as she threw the bouquet behind her shoulder. Evelyn whispering something into Rex’s ear during their first dance.

When the heartbreak grew deeper, I grabbed the rag and tossed it into the trashcan. Getting back to L.A. had been a bad idea: I couldn’t stand to be so close to the newlyweds, to her. I fixed myself another whiskey. I hated being back, I hated the movie I was shooting at MGM and I knew I had to find a way out of this. I would have gladly quit the movie and jumped on the first plane but Roger would have dragged me back. All I could do was running away during the weekends so that’s what I did. Sometimes I would visit John where he was playing or training, others I would travel somewhere on my own if I couldn’t find company.

(So here’s my 2nd attempt on fancasting for TSHOEH. Once again, I picked the actors/actresses based on their “vibe” and a few of their physical characteristics that matches some of the descriptions written in the book. Also I’m just so impatient now because it’s 2023 and we still don’t have any news on the casting. Like it is stressing me out lol. Just hoping they get it RIGHT!)

Evelyn Hugo - Adria Arjona

(Background info: Arjona is an American actress of Puerto Rican & Guatemalan descent. She is currently 30 y/o and 5’7” tall)
