Snippet Sunday
Tumblr media
i'd forgotten it was snippet sunday!
going to post up a VERY ROUGH bit of writing. i'd started this a long time ago, was thinking of doing it as a vignette, but changed my mind, and is now going to be part of the next chapter. but, i've got a lot of changing to do.
this won't be published this saturday; instead i'll put up a vignette idea that's been floating around in my head based on jonathan coulton's you ruined everything song.
if you want to read To the Shore from the beginning, go here!
sneaky with the peeky
“I’m not leaving until we have this out,” Sam said, planting his feet in front of her. Hwa continued to stare at the floor. It was almost like she wasn’t even present in the room. “I thought we’d worked this stuff out a long time ago. What is going on?” Hwa turned, grabbed her old haversack, opened the safe and started dumping books into it. “What are you doing?”
“Leaving,” she said, not looking up. “I don’t belong here. I never belonged here. This was all a mistake.”
“What are you talking about?” he asked, following her around the room. A pit opened in his stomach as he started to understand what she was doing. “Hwa, you had a fight with Cora. I shouldn’t have shouted, but when it comes to her, I go into protective dad-mode.” Sam said in a softer voice. “Stop, just,” he tried to grab her arm, but she dropped low to the floor and instead grabbed empty air.
She crawled under the bed and prized up the floorboard. She dragged out her food stash and started shoving that in the haversack Some of the food fell out.
He’d never really spent any time in her room before. He stared at the couple of Chunks packages that had fallen. The sight of the food derailed his train of thought, “Why do you have food stashed under there?” he asked. Hwa didn’t respond, stood up and went around the bed, stuffing her plushies in the bag. She then zipped up the haversack and headed to the door.
He caught her and stood in her way. With his foot he caught the door and slammed it shut. “Oh no, you’re not getting out that easy. Not until we have this out.” He grabbed the bag out of her hands. “Now, talk.”
Hwa sat down on the floor, again staring at nothing. Sam sat down on the easy chair in front of her and glared. They sat for several minutes in silence. He looked at the contents of the haversack, books, food, and plushies? What the hell, he thought. He knew she had some expensive equipment in that safe, yet she grabbed junk. Food hid under the bed? What the hell…oh shit, goddammit, when it hit him. During his time with the Rangers he’d seen behavior like that before. They liberated a spacer sex trafficking ring and he was there when they liberated the building where they imprisoned the people. When news came of the liberation, the people pulled up the floorboards and showed the Rangers where they hid food and what few sentimental and valuable things they managed to save. Oh god, he thought when the realization came crashing down.
“Hwa, just tell me what happened, ok?” he asked in a much gentler tone.
If possible, she appeared even smaller than she was. “She said she wanted to be like me,” Hwa whispered, still not making eye contact.
“What?” he asked.
“Like me. Cora said she wanted to be like me. I told her she should never want to be me.”
Sam shook his head perplexed. “Of course Cora looks up to you, you’re her captain. I don’t understand.”
“I was ten when I killed my first person. I was a lookout on a drug deal, and I saw a Ryujin guard headed towards us. I got up high, then got the drop on him. They don’t give kids guns, wouldn’ta been able to handle the kick-back, anyway. But, the knives they gave us were real sharp. I cut his throat from ear to ear, through his trachea and esophagus. I’ve always been freakishly strong. Never even made a sound. I even got promoted after that.”
Sam inhaled sharply, momentarily shocked by Hwa’s confession. He was having a hard time reconciling the woman before him to the story she told. He honestly thought that she just did a lot of hacking or lock picking. While she’d told him that she was a trained killer, the reality of what that actually meant hadn’t sunk in. But, it made sense how she was so good in a fire-fight. He’d never met anyone as calm and cool as she. She evinced no emotion when she fought. She might as well have been going to the grocery store for as mundane it seemed to her. Like she’d done a million times for years…which is what it exactly was.

Chapter Four: Status Report
Conner silently unpacked his belongings once they arrived in Metropolis. His room was much larger there. Clark and Lois spoke quietly in the next room. “He looks so sad… Maybe we were being selfish-.”
“Maybe it’s time we tell him about his surprise,” Lois interrupted. Clark nodded. “Conner, can you come out for a minute?”
Conner opened his room door and forced a smile. He didn’t want them to think he didn’t like them. “What’s the matter?” Conner asked.
“Nothing… We have a surprise for you, remember?” Lois asked. Conner nodded. “Do you remember your friend, Bart, from the fair? Well, his grandpa is friends with Clark, and they’re moving in next door soon so Bart can go to the doctor here. You might not be able to see him in person, but we talked to his grandpa about video conferences and letters. All sorts of fun stuff for you kids to do together while he’s sick.”
“What’s a video conference?” Conner asked.
Clark walked toward the kitchen. “Video conferences are like phone calls on the computer, except you can see each other,” Clark explained. Conner cocked his head. “You’ll see next week.”
“I understand what you mean, but how can he see me on the computer? And how come you don’t do this with Ma and Pa? They have a computer,” Conner wondered.
“Well-. Ma and Pa don’t have a webcam, but we could get them one, then we can have a video conference with them sometimes,” Lois suggested. Conner smiled and nodded. “Okay. We can do that, Scout.”She pushed his bangs back and glanced at Clark. Conner returned the gesture.
*
Lois set up the computer for Conner and Bart’s video playdate the afternoon before Conner’s first day of school. “Okay, Gup’. You’re all set,” Clark whispered as the chime rang on the call.
Conner grabbed Clark’s wrist. “I’m nervous,” Conner whispered, “Can you stay?”
“I can stay,” Clark reassured him as Bart answered the call. Barry waved to Clark, and Bart waved to Conner. Bart was in good spirits despite the dark circles around his eyes and the worried look on his grandfather’s face.
“Can you hear me?” Bart rasped. Barry looked down toward him. He looked concerned. Conner nodded. “Now you say something so I can hear you.”
Barry shook up an inhaler and connected it to a spacer and mask. He gave Bart a puff. “Breathe in. Good,” Barry whispered.
“Grandpa, I’m okay,” Bart whispered before turning to the camera. “Say something.”
“Can you hear me too?” Conner asked. Bart grinned.
“Uh-huh… Hey! Do you wanna see my favorite toy?”Bart asked. He was so excited that Conner couldn’t say no if he wanted to.
“Okay,” Conner smiled.
“Go get yours,” Bart replied before hopping off Barry’s lap and traveling out of sight of the camera.
Clark looked at Conner and nodded. “Go ahead… It’s okay,” Clark reassured. Conner walked quickly to the toy box in his room and returned with a single Transformer toy. Barry picked Bart up and resumed holding onto the fidgety six-year-old.
Bart held his Power Ranger up to the camera. “I like him because he can run fast,” Bart explained.
“I like him because he turns into a semi-truck,” Conner replied as he held his Transformer toy to the camera. “I like your Dino Red Ranger.”
“Yesterday, Grandpa played Power Rangers with me in the car. He couldn’t hold the Blue Ranger because he was driving, and we didn’t have any of the villain toys from the show, but I had some toy dinosaurs. So, we took them to the dinosaur zoo… But I think Grandpa was trying to get me to put some of my toys away,” Bart rambled. Conner hung on every word, even giggling at Bart’s observation.
“Hey, Bart? Do you like space aliens?” Conner asked.
“Yeah,” Bart smiled.
“Do you wanna play space rangers with me sometime?” Conner suggested. “We could be on different planets and give status updates like in the movies.”Bart looked at Barry for permission.
Barry nodded. “Can we play space rangers every day?” Bart asked. Conner grinned.
“Sure! What’s your status report?” Conner asked.
“I landed on Planet Metropolis this morning, and there are so many strange creatures here. I live in base-. Grandpa, what’s our apartment number?” Bart asked, momentarily breaking character.
“We’re in apartment G-7,” Barry answered.
“G-8,” Clark whispered to Conner.
“I live in base G-7, with all the tiny people who live in shells. They have teeny tiny voices, and they click when they bump into each other,” Bart described.
“I live in base G-8 with the seahorses. They don’t make any noise… And they send messages to other planets like mailmen do. They don’t know how to talk, but they all understand each other,” Conner replied. Clark slowly exited the room while Bart and Conner played pretend on the video call.
After half an hour, Bart fell into a coughing fit, and Barry had to end the call early. Clark returned with a glass of warm milk. “Here you go, Scout… How was your playdate?” Clark asked.
“Is Bart gonna die?” Conner asked, his big round eyes filled to the brim with concern. Clark shook his head.
“No, but he might have to go to the hospital for a while,” Clark answered honestly.
“He’s gonna miss school tomorrow,” Conner whispered.
“Bart doesn’t go to school. He’s homeschooled,” Clark explained. Conner drank his milk, and Clark picked him up. “Are you nervous about school?”Clark rinsed out the dish with Conner on his hip.
“I’m not gonna know anybody,” Conner whispered as Clark carried him to his bedroom and tucked him in. “Are you gonna wake me up if my alarm doesn’t go off?”
“I sure could… How’d your first day in Metropolis feel?” Clark questioned. Conner scrunched up his nose.
“It was okay. I liked the part where we got ice cream… Is Lois coming to say goodnight?” Conner asked. Clark nodded. “Are you still scared, Clark?”
“I’m a little less scared right now, but we’ll see how things go,” Clark whispered.
Lois poked her head in the door. “Can I come in to say goodnight?” Lois asked. Conner nodded. Lois joined them. “How’s it going, Scout?”
“I’m okay,” Conner whispered.
“Do you like your room?” Lois asked.
“Uh-huh,” Conner whispered. Lois and Clark kissed him goodnight. “Can you leave the nightlight on? Just for tonight?”

Evelyn needs spacers an expander then finally braces. I knew she was going to,her top teeth are very crowded. He said 18-24 months of treatment. She is very excited. I’m 100% sure that will wear off when we have to start clicking that expander twice a day. But we are excited for her to not be so self conscious about her teeth. She has a beautiful smile but “Mom you only say that because I’m your daughter” So I’m glad we can help her be more confident with herself.
Miriam slept like 2 hours last night. She screamed, coughed, laughed, got stuck between the headboard and the mattress and would not sleep in her pack and play at all. I am very much ready for bedtime tonight! I hope she sleeps. She napped for about 45 minutes today in the car and that’s it. So hopefully she’s not over tired.
Jonathan,Carolyn and Finley have had baseball practice everyday this week from 5-8 so they are very easy to put to bed.
I realized Adrian didn’t get an *update* She hasn’t wanted to go watch baseball. Since Miriam has had a bad cough we have been staying home. She’s enjoying staying home and is excited she gets to help me do the evening animal chores and check for eggs alone. I’m sure if the weather stays nice she’s going to want to go and play at the park.

5000-year-old Silver Jewelry Found in Oman
An international team led by Prof Kimberly Williams (Temple University, Philadelphia USA) has presented an important discovery at the international conference of South Asian Archaeology and Art held in Barcelona (Spain).
The joint Omani-American team headed by Prof Nasser al Jahwari and Prof Khaled Douglas from Sultan Qaboos University and Prof Kimberly Williams from Temple University (USA), excavates an Early Bronze Age site at Dahwa, Wilayat of Saham of North Al Batinah Governorate with the support of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, has recovered an exceptional collection of silver jewelry in a prehistoric grave of the third millennium BCE.
The collection included parts of necklaces such as beads, spacers, and several rings.
Interestingly, one of the silver rings had a stamp with the image of an Indian bison (Bos gaurus), a characteristic motif found in the Indus Valley (or Harappa) Culture that indicated the merchants were active in interregional trade. This image was relatively uncommon in the Indus Valley but quite frequent on Indus- related circular stone seals in Iran, Bahrain, Mesopotamia, and Oman. In fact, it was already found in Oman engraved on stamp seals made from local softstone at Salut and Al-Moyassar. However, this is the first time this image was found on a metal finger ring.
According to Prof Jonathan Mark Kenoyer, an expert on ancient technologies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), “seal rings were considered typical of much later periods, but this discovery confirmed that Bronze Age peoples were much more ingenious and technically advanced than previously thought; they introduced at a very early stage administrative solutions that allowed economic growth in the later millennia."
What makes the discovery even more intriguing, is that the jewelry — sampled and analyzed using an innovative non-destructive technique by Dr Randall Law and Dr Sean Scott, material scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) — was found to have been made using silver that most likely came from Anatolia (Türkiye).
According to Dr Dennys Frenez, an Italian expert in ancient trade between the Indus Valley and Oman and a collaborator of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, “the discovery in a tomb in Al Batinah of a silver ring likely made in Mesopotamia (Iraq) using silver from Anatolia (Türkiye) for an individual linked with Indus Civilization (Pakistan and Western India) foreign trade shows the complexity of commercial and cultural interactions in Eurasian prehistory, which can definitely be regarded as the prototype for modern global exchanges”.

“Calm down! It’s really me, Jon.”
Jon continued to struggle against Martin’s grip for a moment before the fight seemed to drop right out of him. “That’s what The Distortion has said the last several times. I don’t believe it this time around any more than the times before. I’m not an idiot.”
“Really? Because you're doing a damn good impression of one.” Martin ran his free hand through his hair in frustration as Jon muttered something under his breath.
“What was that?” Martin asked as Jon huffed, eyes darting around the office and then scanning Martin’s face as if checking everything was where it should be.
“I said, you did well this time,” Jon said, a little louder this time.
“I have no idea what you are going on about Jon.”

Befriend, defend, end- Podcast doctors? Joan bright, Jonathon spacer from How I Died, Dr Rickets from Darkest Night.
Doctors edition!
Befriend: Dr. Joan Bright. I think she'd make a really interesting friend, a somewhat awkward one, but interesting for sure. Also, while I greatly respect her skill I do not respect her breach of doctor-patient confidentiality so defend is off the table.
Defend: Dr. Jonathan Spacer. I'm actually a couple episodes behind because I couldn't comfortably listen to his impulsive decisions but I'm very fond of him in S1 and if it's protecting him from his own bad decisions or from other people I do very much feel the need to do so. I don't always respect his need to fiddle with official documents though, like dude, really?
End: Dr. Lionel Rickets. I strictly do not form attachments to Darkest Night characters but also Rickets is kind of an ass? Like dude be nice to Katie she just saw her boss get murdered for her mistakes and also just a bunch of other people on a regular basis.

Grading the Bulls, Trail Blazers, and Cavs three-team trade featuring Lauri Markkanen
Tumblr media
Let’s grade the NBA’s latest three-team trade.
Lauri Markkanen finally has a new home. The restricted free agent has been traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a sign-and-trade deal that also includes the Portland Trail Blazers.
Cleveland is signing Markkanen to a four-year, $67 million contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Bulls will receive a lottery protected first round pick from the Trail Blazers, swingman Derrick Jones Jr., and a future second round pick. Portland is getting Larry Nance Jr.
The 24-year-old Markkanen was the biggest name left on the free agent market. The former No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft had the most efficient scoring season of his career last year, hitting 40.2 percent of his threes (on 5.8 attempts per game) and ending the year with 62 percent true shooting.
This feels like a trade that helps all three teams accomplish their goals. The Bulls added a future first round pick and rotation player with their Markkanen trade. The Cavs got a young floor spacer to complete their front court next to Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. The Blazers got a solid two-way big in Nance who should help solidify their defense up front.
Let’s grade this deal.
Portland Trail Blazers add Larry Nance Jr.
While Markkanen might be the headlining name in the trade, Nance is the best player in this deal. The 28-year-old has developed into a solid defensive big who can do a little bit of everything on offense.
At 6’7, 245 pounds, Nance is a power forward or small ball center with good mobility who can provide some rim protection. Offensively, Nance has worked to become more of a floor spacer. Last year, he hit 36 percent of his threes on 114 attempts, the best mark of his career. Nance is also a good passer who can be used in dribble-handoffs and high-low actions with Portland’s other bigs. He had success as a roll man last season (grading out in the 62nd percentile, per Synergy Sports) and also runs the floor well in transition.
Damian Lillard put pressure on the Blazers to continue adding to their roster over the offseason, and this is a solid addition. For the price of a lottery protected pick, Portland gets another good defensive big to pair with Robert Covington. Portland’s offense was already awesome with Lillard, C.J. McCollum, and Norman Powell late last season.
Does this move elevate Portland to contender status and ease the concerns about the quality of the roster in Lillard’s mind? Maybe not. But adding Nance certainly improves the team as they enter what’s shaping up to be a “prove it” year from Lillard’s perspective. The only way Portland could have done better than this is by packaging multiple first round picks together, but it’s hard to find a player on the market that would have made for a worthwhile deal for both sides.
Grade: A-
Chicago Bulls add Derrick Jones Jr. and lottery-protected first rounder
The Bulls were reportedly seeking two things in a trade for Lauri Markkanen: a first round pick, and no “bad” contracts coming back. They accomplished both with this deal.
Markkanen was a relic of Chicago’s former front office led by John Paxson and Gar Forman. He’ll ultimately be remembered as another in a long line of failed draft picks. As Chicago’s new front office led by Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley embarked on a bold remaking of the roster this summer, it was clear Markkanen didn’t have a place on the team. Credit the Bulls for being able to land solid value as they sent him out in a trade.
The pick from the Blazers is lottery protected until 2028, and will be a nice asset for Chicago whether they use it themselves or trade it. Jones is a mega high-flier who provides some defensive versatility on the bench, and is on an expiring $9 million contract. It’s always good to add a future second rounder, too.
Getting back Nance in this deal would have been better for the Bulls, but the pick and a decent bench piece in Jones is a solid return given the fact that Markkanen wasn’t in the team’s new plans.

Cleveland Cavaliers add Lauri Markkanen
Markkanen looked like a cornerstone of Chicago’s post-Jimmy Butler rebuild only a few years ago. His play stagnated in the time since. He never quite lived up to his reputation as an outside shooter until last season, and is poor paint protection on defense limited his versatility.
Markkanen finally did hit 40 percent of his threes last year, and Cleveland will expect him to keep that up. Markkanen had a simple excuse in Chicago: he never played with a high-level facilitator who could set him up for easy baskets. Maybe he’ll find that in Cleveland. Darius Garland made major strides last season as both a pull-up shooter and playmaker. Markkanen can space the floor next to either Jarrett Allen and rookie No. 3 overall pick Evan Mobley in the front court.
Ultimately, $67 million for Markkanen feels like a lot of money. He certainly could improve on a new team with a different supporting cast, but his stagnation in Chicago is worrisome. At this point, Markkanen is a player who can’t create his own shot, and isn’t a plus passer, rebounder, or defender on either the interior or perimeter. To live up this contract, he’ll have to be a high volume, highly accurate shooter.
