Overthinking "Eyes on Me" and it's 3 AM and here is my crackpot theory with cited sources:

In an interview with Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy VIII’s composer, in the 2005 Ultimania Omega, Uematsu says Celine Dion was considered for the Final Fantasy VIII theme, “Eyes on Me” (GameFAQs). This fact has been rolling around in my head since I learned it a few weeks ago. I started to listening to “Eyes on Me” with fresh ears. Sure, I thought, I could imagine Celine Dion singing this. It would be great.

Tonight, I was listening to Celine Dion (to be completely transparent, stoned) and “Eyes on Me” doesn’t just sound like something Celine would sing. It is a Celine song. Sonically, it sounds a lot like “My Heart Will go On” (1997) – especially the opening of both songs. Listen to them back-to-back.

Also similar in sound is “Beauty and the Beast” (1991).

I wish I knew more about music theory to explain what else sounds similar about these songs. But anyway.

It’s not just that these songs are sonically similar to “Eyes on Me.” The vibe is the same. The love stories, especially the ones told on her “most critically and commercially successful album” Falling Into You (1996), have the same intensity and drama as Squall and Rinoa’s love story (Wikipedia).

And isn’t that what Final Fantasy VIII (1999) is all about, an epic love story? Look at the logo. It’s literally Squall and Rinoa holding each other. The other Final Fantasy logos are not like that.

Celine is at the top of her career in the mid-to-late 90s. She is internationally known as the “Queen of the Power Ballad” (MTV). She tours in Japan in 1998 on her “Let’s Talk about Love” tour (that’s the album my “My Heart Will Go On” is on) and her tickets sell out in a day (Wikipedia).

And this videogame, where the love story is the focus, has the special opportunity of being the first Final Fantasy with a full-length live-recorded vocal track, something Squaresoft had been wanting to do for years (finalfantasy.fandom.com). This is a moment that needs to blow people’s mind.

Celine Dion would be the perfect choice for this song, from a marketing perspective. I believe she was a strong contender for the performance, and, honestly, I think they tried to get her but couldn’t.

Why do I believe they shot their shot with her and failed? Okay, this is where I go full conspiracy theory.

Because the song was such an integral part of the game, the developers wanted Julia to share similarities with the actual singer of the song. This is why, in the final game, Julia was animated to look like Faye Wong (finalfantasy.fandom.com).

But it turns out Julia has some things in common with Celine Dion. Celine started her career singing in a piano bar. Like Julia, she became an instant success with her public debut. Celine first got famous singing in French, and while I know she is French-Canadian, I find it interesting that Galbadia has a lot of French symbolism. Deling City, where Julia performs, has the Arc de Triomphe after all (finalfantasy.fandom.com).

Those are the strongest comparisons. But also, for your consideration:

The first song that she recorded ("Ce n'était qu'un rêve" which translates as "It Was Only a Dream" or "Nothing But A Dream" – also Final Fantasy VIIIish title) was sent to René Angélil who first became her manager, and, later, her lover. He was 26 years her senior. To me, this has a lot of tonal similarities to Julia/Carraway’s relationship.

Does anyone else think this red cut-out Versace gown at the American Music Awards in 1993 kinda looks like Julia’s dress? Even if not, look through Celine Dion’s outfits from the 90s. This is the kind of thing she would have worn, and also red seems to be her color (BAZAAR).

Final Fantasy VIII also SEEMS like it was heavily influenced by “My Heart Will Go On” and/or Titanic in general. I think there’s a reason there are dozens of “My Heart Will Go On” Final Fantasy VIII AMVs on YouTube – The song fits the game perfectly. Have you SEEN the official music video for this song? I don’t know, I see lots of parallels.  

Some of the most romantic scenes in Final Fantasy VIII either take place on a balcony or in view of the ocean, just like in Titanic. Titanic has a dance scene too, though I cannot speak to how similar these are. This seems too outlandish to be relevant but I am going to throw it out there: River Phoenix, who Squall’s facial features were based on (Wikipedia), was considered for the role of Jack in Titanic (IMDb). Maybe the developers wanted a “Jack” of their own.

And DO NOT GET ME STARTED on the Final Fantasy VIII/Beauty and the Beast parallels. I’m just going to link to these gif sets: [x] [x]

And then in FREAKING 2007 Celine Dion comes out with, GET THIS, “Eyes on Me.” But it’s a completely different song. So if you Google “Celine Dion Eyes on Me,” you can’t find anything about them considering Celine for the videogame theme under all the other search results. CELINE WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?!

So here is my stupid conspiracy: I think the game was written, at least in part, as a love letter to Celine Dion in an attempt to do anything to get her to sing for them. I am pretty sure videogames did not have big artists featured at the time, and she was literally the artist of that moment. It would not be easy to convince her to work with them, so they put in Celine easter eggs to try and get her to agree. Because imagine how much bigger Final Fantasy VIII could have been if they could say Celine Dion was attached to it? Hell, I am pretty sure my mom would have played it if that was the case.

I know that the story is that they went through CDs and Faye Wong was the top choice—and don’t get me wrong, she did a great job, and she still made the song super famous—But I just think this is A LOT OF PARALELLS to just ignore.

All I am saying is, what the fuck is Final Fantasy VIII about if not “The Power of Love”?

[FANFIC MONTHYL RECAP] March edition

Here's another recap! March has been very busy at work, but I entered one of my particularly creative phases and Rinoa's event at @ffviiicharacterweek spurred me on. So here's what I wrote this month:

My mind, a multichapter story about Rinoa, in celebration of her week at @ffviiicharacterweek : in which Rinoa grows out of her privileged life in Deling City and spreads her wings. Starting pre-game, finishes right after the game, with lots of headcanon, kinda experimental. Currently up: 4/11 chapters, weekly updates. (AO3 | FF.net)

When Squall fell for Rinoa

Something that gets to me is when people think Squall fell for Rinoa.

Something people tend to miss in FF8 is that Squall doesn't like incompetent people at the start of the game. Squall is not friendly with Quistis and Zell, the teacher who is way too friendly and the spaz with a face tattoo. They get up in his business in a way he's not comfortable with. This reeks of incompetency (which do cause problems later on that affect missions).

However, there are plenty of people Squall is, well, less mean and even nice to.

Selphie: Slams into Squall on a first meeting and the first option is to take her on a tour of the Garden. So, while she's a ditz, she wanted to learn and be more competent at something. Later, despite being ditzy and distracted by wanting the festival to happen, she shows she's capable and stays on mission. Selphie doesn't let her personal side interfere with the mission.

Seifer: They got the bromance going on. Seifer is better than him in a lot of ways.

Raijin/Fujin: Raijin assumes Fujin will get Squall a drink and are rather chummy throughout the game. These two with Seifer are part of a disciplinary committee which, they seem to take seriously (they get Zell for "speeding").

Random Students: This is a weird one, but Squall has a lot of opportunities to talk to students before the SeeD exam and then before the graduation ball. If you talk to them, you get two views on Squall that don't come up a lot. First a few people call him a troublemaker and then people look up to him/trust him. A kid wants his brother to be more like Squall, Squall tries to help a student with their test by showing his gunblade, and a student tells Squall to keep a secret, but this random student wet himself during the exam... Why would someone tell another person this if they weren't at least somewhat friendly with them? Yeah teenagers are dumb, but no one is that dumb.

None of these people have shown they were incompetent, at least, not incompetent in a way that affects Squall personally. You can be incompetent but keep it far away from Squall.

But the big one?

Rinoa

Not at the dance. Not in FH. Not when the timey whimey shit has hit the fan.

When Squall wakes Rinoa up on the Forest Owl train.

Squall saw the Forest Owls as "incompetent as fuck/10" and it soured his mood. He seemed like he wanted to cause problems with them for the sake of disrespecting them, almost as if their incompetency offended him personally.

However, once he woke Rinoa up and they talked about how she used him at the dance? Squall isn't just smitten by her looks, if that's all it took then Quistis would have had him wrapped around her finger. No, Squall is attracted to Rinoa's professional side. Squall made a joke, without being prompted and without it being mean... Squall is in new territory.

Squall's mood shifts throughout the early part of the game regarding Rinoa based on how competent she is at the time. He isn't as disrespectful after he sees at least one person from the Forest Owls is competent.

There are times when Rinoa is incompetent, there are times when she's competent, but this true first meeting cemented to Squall that Rinoa's personality, despite being a bit of a princess, is fucking hot.

And that goes a long, long, way to wanting to be with someone.

All of this boils down to Squall's lie. A way to make a good character is to give them a lie that they need to either double down on or come to the truth. Squall's lie is that he thinks people shouldn't have to rely on others. Rinoa is hot, she seems interested, and she won't have to rely on him (and he her).

Which we know is a fucking lie, but he doesn't, and that's what makes it work so well. But that's for later in the game.

Last book I read: Okay, the last book I finished was The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. It was incredibly inspiring and nothing else I’ve picked up in the past year has even come close.

Greatest literary inspirations: Honestly, The Goldfinch still influences me a LOT. Also I keep trying to make my longfic the next East of Eden because that book has a grip on my soul. 

Things in my current fandom I want to read but I don't want to write: I want to read the backstory of Julia Heartilly and Fury Caraway stuff for ff8, Alex Mullner stuff for Stardew Valley! 

Things in my current fandoms I want to write but I think nobody would be interested in them but me: I always feel like no one but me is interested in anything I write lmao. 

You can recognize my writing by: Romantic love, mental illness, and personal growth all feature heavily, I think. 

My most controversial take (current fandom): I don’t think I have any controversial takes! As @angelosearch recently told me, I see ff8 as a giant sandbox and I want to see alllll the ideas.

Top three favorite tropes: 1. Slowburn, 2. Slowburn, and 3. Slowburn. Lol jk (kind of). I also enjoy found family stuff, and I recently discovered the deliciousness of hurt/comfort. Though I will read almost anything if it sounds interesting! 

What’s your current writing mood (10 – super motivated and churning out words like crazy, 0 – in a complete rut): I’m at a solid 6. I would be writing right now but I’m stuck at a very specific scene and it’s starting to drive me a little crazy. I’m probably going to finish this tag game and then attempt a very bad version of the scene just so I can move past it lol

Share a fandom frustration: None! I often hear about people complaining about fandoms and it honestly just confuses me. I’ve only ever had pleasant interactions with ff8 people. And the SV fandom is too big so I don’t interact with it. I just like to look at cute pictures of Harvey and Elliott and Alex <3

Seifer calls them a coven once, when he thinks they are out of earshot, and Rinoa doesn’t know if he means it as a compliment.

The air in the Balamb Garden's library was musty, like always. Squall watched as Laguna rummaged through stacks of old tapes. Just over an hour before, Laguna had finally admitted to squall that he was his father. The newness of his father's confession and the uncharged nature of the library seemed to crash against each other in Squalls head. He inhaled that stuffy, aged air, not realizing that he had been holding his breath.

Squall had to wait for a week after the battle at Ultemechia's palace for Laguna to contact him. The hints dropped by Kiros and Ward were enough for Squall to put the pieces together, but the ball was still in Laguna's court.

As the days passed, Rinoa began to supply potential reasons that Laguna hadn't reached out. Everytime Squall told her he wasn't bothered, that she didn't need to concern herself. This was a truth with a lie hidden inside. He hated seeing her worried, and was always bothered by her guilt. This guilt was inherited from Rinoa's father, but Squall knew the origin was Laguna. He was sure that Laguna knew it too. Even so, it was hard for Squall to even feel resentment towards Laguna. There was a hollow pit where his feelings for his father should have been. Sanded away by time, maybe. Or war.

Laguna finally fulfilled his promise to call Squall. They met at 9p.m. outside of the Deiling City Hotel bar. The night passed entirely without major incident. Squall drove him back in the Ragnarok, and couldn't miss the pong of historical feeling that passed over the older man's face when he was lifted up into the cockpit.

They met in the Deiling City Hotel week after week. Julia's bar served as a sort of limiter for their relationship. Laguna knew that Squall had been to Winhill. Atleast, if he wasn't a total idiot. But the Deiling City Hotel kept them in conversations about sorceress and war, deftly avoiding family. And home. Laguna drank progressively more each week. Squall did the opposite, having just one glass of beer before switching to water. He didn't hide it, but Laguna never noticed or let on. It took about a month for Lagmato work up the tolerance to be drunk enough to have the courage to finally admit his relationship to Squall. He threw the confession away, unable to even meet his son's eyes.

Squall had no idea what to say. He motioned for another beer, feeling grim when he noticed Laguna do the same. Coming face to face with the son that did what Laguna never could triggered something in the President. He began to hum the time to an old Julia Heartlilly hit, something Squall couldn't quite place.

Thanks to Lagunas drunken state this eventually escalated to him on singing and dancing on the bar. A few short minutes later, Lagunas arm was wrapped around Squall's shoulder as Squall led his father back towards Ragnarok. "What do you mean youve never heard it?" Laguna was insisting they seek out a tape of this apparently rare and underappreciated Julia Heartilly b-side. "Were you living under a rock?"

Not for the first time since he had begun these weekly meetings with Laguna, Sawall found the idea of mahood pathetic. Laguna's desperation to share a piece of his youth had him obsessed with poring ownership over Julia. It wasn't just Laguna. Cid, Fury. Even Seifer. These men couldn't protect their women, or the world. That had fallen to Squall. They certainly didn't protect him. And now, after Squall fixed their messes, they look to him to perform friendship for their benefit. As if he was the one that had proven himself good enough to join their club.

Laguna shouted, bringing Squall out of his thoughts "I found it!" He excitedly carried over the tape, labeled "Eyes on Me."

Squall couldnt help himself. "This is what you were looking for?" But Laguna didn't wait for squall to finish his line of questioning, happy instead to trot off in search of an appropriate player. Squall wondered what Rinne could have possibly seen in him. Wanted, not for the first time, the chance to meet his mother as himself.
