My novel Up With the Star comes out today, Friday, September 8! It features a whole cast of queer characters and is set in an America that has fallen apart and reformed itself into scores of smaller states, some at war with each other, some at peace, some federated, some not. The main character is one of the Nameless, a manufactured underclass produced by one of the largest political bodies on the North American continent. She hails from a small state that was formed by christofascist secessionists around a century before the story starts, and was cast out after her values failed to align with those of her birthplace, in a rather spectacular manner.

After the Iconoclast's violent assassination of the previous leader of a different political body, she's nominated to take his place by the Iconoclast, as well as her friends Conway--an ex-POW who now works in commerce--and Marta--a highly-regarded trauma surgeon at the gladiatorial pits, the home of post-dissolution America's favorite sport, the site of quite a lot of augury and oracular functions, and the main characters "workplace." She takes the job on the offering of being able to spite the people who made her Nameless. Wouldn't it nice to be powerful and respected? Wouldn't it be nice to be in charge, just once?

Great for people who like adult transmasc characters, characters who are struggling with christianity, doctors, scenes about food, estranged families, fictional grandmas, and people motivated by spite, and can tolerate suicidal ideation, blood, violence, christianity, and sex scenes.

For any Nevermoor fans that've ever been interested in getting their hands on the UK hardcover editions of the series, with the wonderful cover designs..... I think they might be out of print (which. makes sense with the gold foil) so. goodluck and godspeed for finding them secondhand, because it was surprisingly hard to do online.

Cover Art Query

Well, while I'm still waiting on the glossy author copy edition to arrive, I have an open question to everyone regarding the book's graphics and text.

This is what I put in the template for my POD service:

While I love this slightly rosy bright red, this didn't do wonders with the matte version (my beloved finish/texture) and I don't know how much better the glossy will come out. So, in the interest of making that red extra searing (and the text more legible) I have two options.

Option A: Candy Apple Coloration

Brighter red on the graphics and the little bits of text.

Option B: Candy Apple Graphics, All White Text

#on top of this I think I even have to tweak the paperback's interior a bit #the little illustration flourishes I put in (all black!) came out less crisp than the surrounding text somehow #black VS charcoal #and somehow fuzzy? so I may wind up nixing them just to keep it from looking wonky #argh #nothing like doing final nitpicks two days before launch #🤡 #the vampyres #my writing #my art #the vampyre #dracula

Every time I think about how the Colleen Hoover fangirlies get mad when people even suggest that they should try and diversify their portfolios I get really, really sad. Like I don't think you have to read classics or anything and be an elite snob but if you limit yourself to just Colleen Hoover and maybe Sarah J Maas and a few other popular booktok authors, you're missing out on so so much. Even if you just want to find good new releases, keeping up with the book of the month club will give you plenty of options (even if you can't subscribe to them and have to get them from the library). Diversify your portfolio. Read older mass market paperback romances or literally anything else.
