老鴉柿[Rōyagaki] Diospyros rhombifolia

It is ornamental, and is treated primarily as a garden tree or bonsai. The fruit is inedible.

The shape of the fruit resembles a shuttlecock and also known as 衝羽根柿[Tsukubanegaki]. 衝[Tsuku] means to hit or to strike, 羽根[-bane|Hane] means shuttlecock and 柿[-gaki|Kaki] means persimmon.

Rōya is often also written as 老爺. 老[Rō] means elderly, 鴉 means crow and 爺 means elderly man. 鴉 and 烏[Karasu], 爺 and 翁[Okina] mean the same thing respectively. 爺 is also read as jii or jijii. Jijii is a way of speaking used to revile elderly men.

By the way, the elderly man with six long arms who works in the boiler room in the Studio Ghibli's film Spirited Away is named 釜爺[Kamajii]. 釜 means boiler. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok3eA3ILC9c

In Spirited Away one of the first scenes that was storyboarded was the one with the river spirit's bath. I think that was the basic skeleton of the entire movie (and why it's the best one)

The only concept they would have at the time, would be that the movie takes place in a bathhouse. So they have Lin and Chihiro in a day of work.

You got the servant's quarters, clocking into work, cleaning the bath, etc

Even the little mention of Kamajii feels like it could have been elaborated on later* "He's the boiler man" (*If you didn't see the first scene with him)

There's concept art that shows Chihiro and Lin working with more spirits I think it's interesting

There's a lot of concept art that ultimately never got used. Although some of it would be to establish character's personalities. (character design!)

Like how Chihiro is annoyed with Yubaba's son, despite the fact she's not one to complain about her ordeal at the bathhouse (It's more to characterize Bou as spoiled)

I always wonder about the concept art around Zeniba. If I had to guess, a potential hour got scrapped from the final movie.

In The Art of Spirited Away, there's an interview where "Zeniba's Confrontation" is mentioned, but ultimately being at the end of time, budget and schedule

I've seen this movie so many times, don't recall the first time I've seen it, so I can't really imagine it going any differently.

Thinking about it, Zeniba does have a quick change of heart at the end

Spirited Away

This movie tackles several themes that can be related to Japan but also globally. I think that the most obvious theme is environmentalism. Certainly Japan faces issues with environmentalism but so does the rest of the world. In the movie, we learn that what seems to be a stink spirit turns out to be a river god with an enormous amount of pollution. We also learn that Haku was a guardian of the Kohaku River, which was filled to build apartment complexes and therefore resulted in Haku losing his identity. I believe the stink spirit example speaks on the harmful effects of pollution but also that positive change to reverse these effects can happen if we try.

Another theme is westernization and capitalism. One of the moral failing of capitalism is child labor, as young Chihiro is forced to work in order to survive in the westernized system of the bath house. Chihiro's family is likely from a wealthy family according to the car that they drive, and Chihiro's father boasts that he has "credit cards and cash" as they gorge on the food for spirits. Due to their greediness, they turn in capitalist pigs, not even realizing after they've changed. The difference in the quality of life of Yubaba and the workers are stark. Like the top 1% earners, Yubaba's lair is adorned with expensive looking vases and painting. She herself is adorned in European dress and jewelry. However, the workers lived in cramped quarters, do not have lavish clothes, and do not feast on lavish food like their guests do. The boiler room is reminiscent of a sweat shop, with Kamajii being overworked and the soot spirits who are replaceable and die if they do not work.

One theme that related to my life was the importance of names. In the story, not forgetting your true name even after Yubaba takes it away is the only way to stay free from Yubaba's complete grasp. As names equate to your own identity in the movie, it made me think about how my own name tells a lot about me and therefore is tied strongly to my identity. As I am half Japanese and half Korean, my American middle name is my Japanese last name and my American last name is my Korean last name. Thus my name tells of my heritage and the way I often see the world through multiple lenses. To represent this, I chose for my picture to be the goodbye card that helps Chihiro remember her name.

oh yeah i bolted up in bed at like 4 am last night bc i realized that kamajii in spirited away saying "the train used to run in both directions, but these days it's a one-way ride" can be taken as stating that spirits who had already passed on used to sometimes return to the world of the in-between and the living, but that was a long long time ago even to an old spirit

OKKKKKKAAAYYYYY!!! Sorry I let this one sit a bit! I haven’t seen Spirited Away in so long, but this ask prompted me to re-watch it!! Also this is an adorable idea and I really, really love that you offered it to me!!

Also, this is the second draft of this list, because the first draft is LONG. Long enough that it could easily be turned into a full story with maybe another hour or two’s attention. This idea really ran away with me, so I shortened the list to the important details lol (And I took some liberties with it, because of course I did lol)

Without further delay:

1. This is not only a Spirited Away AU but also a teenager AU. Victor (17) is traveling with his parents when they take the wrong direction in a fork in the road and end up in the deserted town of Hasetsu.

2. Vic’s parents are turned into poodles after eating katsudon, but Vic is distracted by a noise at the back of the restaurant and follows what he believes to be another person. He discovers Yuuri (15) hiding in an alley behind the restaurant.

3. Yuuri is a Haku-like character, Toshiya is like Kamajii, Mari is like Lin (but is obviously Toshyia’s daughter), and Hiroko is possessed by the evil witch Chihoko who is running the onsen using Hiroko’s human form. Yuuri explains that his family used to own and run the onsen, but everything had changed when the fog rolled into Hasetsu a year ago, including his mother who Yuuri says he can recognize by physical form only. (”She isn’t like this, Victor! She is loving and wonderful. I don’t know what happened…” Yuuri stifles his cries as he lets Victor comfort him).

4. Minako is like Zeniba, except she is not Chihoko’s sister and instead is a warrior and defender for the spirits of positive emotions. She believes that Chihoko possessed Hiroko because Hiroko was the embodiment of positivity and light, and therefore a devastating loss to the light of Hasetsu. When they finally meet Minako in her home, she explains that the negative emotion spirits used to live on an island while the positive spirits coexisted peacefully with the humans of Hasetsu. Chihoko got greedy and took over Hasetsu. She tells Victor and No-face (who is red and white, which is symbolic but I kinda want to save this detail for the story lol) that if Victor can free his parents, it will give strength back to the light and maybe chase away Chihoko and her legions of negative emotion spirits and demons.

5. Yuuri HAS A DRAGON FORM. Also, the ending is very “love is the ultimate power.” (This is the part that distracted me the most because as I was writing the original list, my brain decided to write out the ending including the “final test” which has a little more to it than “pick out your parents.” I don’t want to create a wall of text by posting it here lol).

Bonus: Yurio is Chihoko’s baby. He transforms back into himself when he stands up for Yuuri and is released from his spell. (Angry baby Yurio!)
