Brief Description:

Kaori has reddish-pink hair and pink eyes.

Her academy grades were nothing to look at, with Lee being the only one who scored worse than her during their graduation exam. She has very low stamina, and has little strength. She tries to push herself though, which causes her to pass out often. What she lacks in physical strength, though, she more than makes up in her ability to use Genjutsu. Poisons and Senbon are also incorporated in her abilities, to make her jutsu that more deadly.

Kaori is short-tempered, but it mainly stems from a lack of self esteem in herself. Hates talking about it, so if she's opening up to you, you're special no doubt about it. Really admires Rock Lee and his constant determination and positive outlook on life. Strives to also be like that, but it's hard to change her ways. Will mellow out a bit as she gets older.

Book 25, 2023

As always, I am in charge of deciding what counts as a book, so this illustrated edition of Kyusaku Yumeno's short story "Hell in a Bottle" is a book. Would I prefer an actual collection of short stories sans post-millenial somewhat pastel toned Kaori Yuuki-esque art? Yes. Are there a lot of options for feeding my interest in early 20th century Japanese writers outside dropping textbook money and bookshipping import taxes on something from the University of Hawaii? It's a bit thin on the ground.

"Hell in a Bottle" is lightly gothic but being told over the course of a few short letters in bottles tossed to the ocean deprives it of the atmosphere you might want. Not as fucked up as descriptions of his other work lead me to hope.

I want to read "Dogra Magra", which doesn't have an English translation. Hook me up with that or one of his novels published by Arigatai Books please and thank you. I want some pre-war Japanese surrealism.

Genjutsu is so underused in the series, it's a crime (totally not still salty about the potential for Sakura to be a genjutsu user and the potential themes that would bring to her arcs)

So, any more detailed ideas for the kinds of illusions yoir oc would use? Any favourites? How do the poisons play into them? Are they causing hallucinations? Making the illusion easier to apply? The means of finishing an opponent trapped in an illusion?

Yea genjutsu is so underused in the series!! A crime truly.

Kaori’s illusions can range between realistic to fantastical, mainly depending on what the circumstances are. Her favorites are of course the more crazy ones HAHAHAHA!! But I imagine she uses the more realistic illusions more. They tend to be centered around plants and flowers, but studying under Anko snakes become a factor as well.

The poisons can either enhance or even cause the illusions in her opponents. They’re much more effective when they’re injected with her senbon, but she does learn how to infuse gas poisons as well.

Her go to illusions and poisons tend to be ones that cause paralysis or knock her opponents out. She has low stamina, so she tries to make up for that by trying to knock out her opponents quickly (which is the opposite of chihiro’s typical strategy of wearing her opponents out).

Finishing off her opponents usually consists of trapping them in a genjutsu that sends them into a coma, or the illusions become so powerful that even a simple push or poke from her will cause her opponents to believe they’re being fatally wounded.

How Kaori’s Chakra Feels to Sensors

Kaori’s chakra gives off a fresh and floral vibe most of the time. She may lack physical strength, but her chakra can radiate an overwhelming sense of dread when she’s upset, as if vines are wrapping around her enemies. Some say her genjutsu is so powerful, her chakra can give off a flowery scent. They say if you can smell it, you best hope she is not your enemy.

Ranking the DR girls (3/3)

Kaede Akamatsu: 6/10. I wish we spent more time with her. She reminds me a bit of Kaori from Your Lie in April.

Kirumi Tojo: 5/10. I respect her, but she’s not my favorite.

Angie Yonaga: 4/10. I didn’t like her at first, but now I just think she’s kinda cute. The blood thing is weird, though.

Tenko Chabashira (did I spell that right??): 4/10. She shouts way too much. Not my favorite.

Miu Iruma: 2/10. No. Just no. Does she ever have the brain cell??

Tsumugi Shirogane: -120/10. I don’t need to explain this one.

Himiko Yumeno: hahahaha!! 1/10. I can do her voice, and I hate that I can.

Maki Harukaw: 10/10. THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS IMMACULATE!! Ahem, sorry. I love her; she’s a comfort character for me.

Well, we can track down at least two of the three. The blue-haired girl's true name is Kiko Omigawa. I don't know how common of a last name it is, so finding her ancestor could be challenging, depending on the circumstances. While we haven't officially met the Yumenos, Miwa mentioned them as patrons of her ski lodge who constantly lose their luggage, so maybe we can ask her for more info. As for Rantaro, we'll get back to you on that

How exactly do you track these people?

It's a complicated process, but it requires a mixture of both quantum signatures and M-DNA/Y-DNA backtracking. Basically, we match those two and we can follow the information backward through time, from our perspective.

M for the genetic mother, Y for the genetic father. We can also cross-reference with information in our time or that Mikako-san can see from between 2070 and now.

The difficult part is it's not always clear due to a number of factors, such as the continuing divergence between the Tragedy timeline and our time, or even the fact that some of them could've been adopted.

Moonlight Sonata

Kaede could feel her heart almost pound out of her chest. It was a school morning tomorrow, which meant getting up early, and then coming home after school to practice for hours on end. She actually preferred weekdays to weekends— at least she had some time to see Shuichi, and get away from being with her parents for a little while.

She could see the light on in the upstairs hallway, which meant that her mom was still upstairs, checking on Kaede and Kaori to make sure they were asleep. Kaede’s phone was hidden under her pillow, which was the reason she was so on-edge. She wasn’t supposed to have her phone unless her parents gave it to her. But she’d managed to get it without either of them knowing. If they noticed it was missing, though... she couldn’t let that happen.

After what seemed like an eternity, the light turned off, and she heard her mom’s footsteps head down the stairs. Once Kaede was sure she was out of earshot, she pulled out her phone and started typing.

“Number 157. My name is Kaede Akamatsu. I’m auditioning to be a part of Danganronpa’s 53rd season, Killing Harmony. What part I get doesn’t matter to me— you could make me a victim, for all I care, it’s a simulation. All I want is to be on the show. There are always the characters that reassure the rest that everything’s going to be alright, and encourage everybody else to keep going. But I’ve seen enough seasons of Danganronpa and lived long enough to know that things don’t always turn out alright. I’ve been in this house for years and years, and things have only gotten worse from the moment my parents found out I was good at something. I can be your realist. The one that shows the rest of the class the realities of the game, the realities of the world, and the realities of the people that live in it. I’m perfect for a killing game— I don’t have any faith in humanity. Hope is nice and all, but you need despair, too, in order to make a killing game work.”

The day afterwards, Kaede excused herself in the middle of class to go to the bathroom, but ran off to the library as soon as she made it out the door. This was the only time she had to film, so she had to make it count. The day went by like a blur. Kaede uploaded her video to a school computer, submitting her application with her own email, and deleting the video from the computer afterwards.

The next week was excruciating. Her next recital was coming up soon, and that meant losing sleep in order to get the movements right enough times in a row to be allowed to go to bed. Movement One was easy enough. That was the part everyone knew, even people who couldn’t care less about piano music. Movement Two wasn’t bad, either. But once her parents let her move on past the first two, Movement Three was always waiting for her on the other side.

That piece was hell. Any pianist’s nightmare. It was all over the keyboard, and so fast, too. On a good night, on top of finishing homework, it was often 2 am by the time she went to bed because her dad kept claiming she’d missed a note here or there. It was exhausting, and Kaede was sick and tired of hearing  any part of Moonlight Sonata, but most of all Movement Three.

Wednesday morning rolled around. That night, Kaede had been unlucky and passed out on her desk around 3:30 doing homework. Two hours and fifteen minutes later, her alarm went off, and she practically shoved herself out of bed. Maybe she would have been a little more excited if she remembered what day it was. Announcements for the V3 cast were coming out today.

Exhausted, she made herself leave her room and go downstairs, to get her uniform out of the dryer. But as soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs—

“Kaede?” her mom called from the kitchen

The pianist tensed, freezing in place. Uh oh. Her tone made it sound like something was wrong. “Y-Yeah?” It was only then that she noticed that her mom was holding her phone. Kaede’s phone.

“What’s ‘Danganronpa?’” she asked, scrolling through something on the screen.

Kaede felt her blood turn to ice. “Oh, i-it’s just some... some thing at school they made us sign up for. I wouldn’t have given them my email otherwise.”

“Well, it says here that you need to be somewhere for it on Friday if you’re going to participate. Sunday’s the recital, you can’t go.”

Participate? I... I got in...?

“Mom, it’s for film class,” she lied, quickly stepping into the kitchen. “I’ll fail the class if I can’t go.”

“Your career matters more than an elective that you didn’t have to take. You’re not going,” her mom insisted, glancing up at Kaede. She handed her the phone. “Decline the offer and copy me on the email so I can see that you did it, by the end of the day.” Kaede started to turn away to go grab her uniform and escape back to her room, when her mom put a hand on her shoulder. Kaede turned back. “Hey, sweetheart, I’m sorry about all this. But we don’t have a choice. This recital is important, there are going to be talent scouts there. You did a great job last night, and I know you’ll do great on Sunday. I love you, okay?”

Kaede forced a smile. “Y-Yeah. Love you too, mom.”

Once she’d grabbed her uniform, the pianist headed back upstairs to her room, pulling a small suitcase out of her closet from a vacation they’d taken years ago. She threw together a few outfits, her things from the bathroom, her makeup case, computer, chargers, and a few snacks she’d stashed in her room. She put her normal school supplies in her backpack, and put the suitcase back in the closet. For now. The email was still sitting on her phone, with her acceptance and the role she’d been given. But that didn’t matter to her. The only thing that mattered was that she was accepted in the first place.

A half hour later, Kaede’s dad called up from his room, where he could see the street from his window— “Kae! Kaori! Bus is here!” 

“I know, I know!” Kaede opened the door, quickly pulling the suitcase out with her, before either of them could spot it. “Bye!”

“Bye-!” her sister echoed, following quickly after the pianist. Once they were halfway down the driveway, though, Kaori’s eyes locked onto the suitcase. “What’s that for, Kaeidiot?” she asked, in a joking tone.

“Sleepover at Yumeno’s,” she replied simply.

“Is it gonna be as fun as you’re making it sound?” Kaori teased, following Kaede onto the bus.

The blonde rolled her eyes, sliding into her usual seat and putting the suitcase onto the ground next to her.

The bus drove away, and Kaede Akamatsu watched her house fade into the distance for the last time.
