SPARK OF SOMETHING SPECIAL
THE RISE OF THE AMERICAN JOSHI PROMOTION
As Japanese women’s promotions continue to gain influence worldwide, joshi-inspired companies have begun popping up around the U.S. In this feature story, PWI helps explain the growing phenomenon
TEXT BY KAREN PETERSON

[Maya Yukihi, a two-time former champion of the Ice Ribbon promotion, twists the limbs of COLOR’s leader SAKI. This meeting in Orlando marked the very first singles bout between the two.]
OVER EIGHT YEARS of working the Japanese independent circuit contemporaneously, Maya Yukihi and SAKI have crossed paths numerous times. With showcase matches at Pro Wrestling NOAH and All Japan Pro Wrestling, competing in Stardom’s 2023 Triangle Derby, and working at multiple women’s promotions in Japan, they’d never faced off in a one-on-one bout. However, that changed on October 14, at the Englewood Neighborhood Center in Orlando, Florida, where these world-renowned freelance wrestlers finally locked horns in a main-event singles match for the inaugural SPARK Joshi Atlantic championship. “We’ve wrestled plenty of times, but always in tag and three-person matches,” Yukihi said enthusiastically. “I didn’t expect this to happen in the united states!”
The North American scene, in particular, has seen a significant uptick in Japanese wrestlers exploring the international wrestling landscape with fly-ins for single commitments, while others gain notoriety by making frequent visits to various North American and European promotions. Showcase tournaments such as the Mae Young Classic and the success of Japanese stars in WWE and All Elite Wrestling have served as the gateway for many to begin exploring their options outside the big companies.
American independent promotions–GCW, Deadlock Pro, West Coast Pro, and Prestige Wrestling, to name a few–have showcased Japanese talent, further contributing to the interest and continued success of the Japanese women’s wrestling scene. Even legends including Chigusa Nagayo, Bull Nakano, and Manami Toyota have all worked with international promotions to help make joshi more accessible across the board.
[“If wrestling in Japan isn’t a goal, I would question your intentions as a wrestler.” Thus says Australia native KZT, seen here making good use of her jiu-jitsu skills against Kelsey Raegan.]
The diversity in the North American independent scene isn’t just minted to athletes from Japan, as many wrestlers have relocated to the United States to hone their craft or work in backstage capacities. While she competes for WOW Superheros as Exodus, works behind the scenes t a major American promotion, and frequents East Coast outfits including GCW and frequents East Coast outfits including GCW, and DPW, KZT is an Australia-born wrestler based in Orlando with a full plate and an even bigger bucket list. “Wrestling in Japan is an absolute goal of mine. If wrestling in Japan isn’t a goal, I would question your intentions as a wrestler,” KZT mused, looking back at a recent work trip to the country.
When asked for her thoughts on being an Australian working in an American-based Japanese-inspired promotion in SPARK, she smiled. “It pretty much goes in line with who I am as a person,” explained KZT, who showed off her jiu-jitsu skills against Flordia mainstay Kelsey Raegan. “People always assume some things about me, but as soon as I open my mouth, they notice my Australian accent, and they find out things like I’m a black belt. I’ve never been one to fit in.”
For many wrestlers, making the journey to Japan–even for one single match–remains a bucket list item, as trying to find a foothold within the competitive market can be rather challenging. Founded in 2023, SPARK Joshi Puroresu of America is one of the latest showcase promotions to further expand opportunities for Women’s wrestling–and specifically, for wrestling on an international level.
The existence of Japanese-inspired wrestling promotions, such as Kitsune Women’s Wrestling and SPARK Joshi Puroresu of America, has inspired excitement among fans and wrestlers alike. These leagues provide another avenue for fans to experience Japanese wrestling without the international airfare; offer Japanese competitors chances to experience the international fan response while wrestling deserve opponents from around the world; and serve as a potential proving ground for talent interested in achieving the elusive dream of wrestling in Japan.
“When [SPARK] contacted me, I [realized] that this is something that I can bring my British skills to, plus what I learned in Japan. Said Xia Brookside, just prior to her title bout with SPARK Joshi Pacific champion Ram Kaichow. “And with all the talented women here, we can show an American audience what women wrestlers are made of.”
Brookside, a former member of the NXT U.K. roster, made her Japanese debut with Stardom at 18 years old. Now 25, the daughter of retired British grappler Robbie Brookside has completed five tours in Japan. Her most recent excursion was for the Triangle Derby in January 2023, when she completed as part of Mina Shirakawa’s unit, Club Venus.
[Maika Ozaki applies a camel clutch to Amber Nova during their encounter at RISING HEAT East.]
For Japanese natives performing outside of their home country, one of the biggest eye-openers tends to be the energy of the international crowd–especially how vocal fans are with their opinions and expressions. Typically, Japanese audiences don’t break into song, rounds of chanting, or candidly express their opinions. However, the overall positive energy is definitely not lost in translation. “Because we’re in America, I was curious what the atmosphere would be like,” confessed Miu Wantanaabe, a popular member of the TJPW roster who has only wrestled internationally a handful of times. “The fans know and love Japanese wrestling, so it made me so happy.” In her victory over IMPACT’s KiLynn King, Wantanabe put her strength and power to the test, refusing to let the language barrier impede her performance.
One of the clear advantages of SPARK and similar promotions is the shared enthusiasm to pay homage to Japanese wrestling traditions, but to present them in a way that is more accessible to the non-Japanese speaking market. SPARK showrunner Chibi (C.B.) joins with inaugural SPARK Atlantic champion SAKI (founder of freelance group COLOR’S) to open and close each show with a self-produced, Japanese pop-inspired theme song called “ZA SUPAAKU” (“THE SPARK”).”I was able to come to the United States for the first time with the advent of SPARK Joshi,” SAKI told PWI, after defeating Maya Ykihi in the main event of RISING HEAT EAST in Orlando. “So, I want to do my best to help take the company to new highs.”
[Xia Brookside struggles to break free of Ram Kaichow’s grip during an unsuccessful bid for the SPARK Joshi Pacific title.]
[SAKI, as the newly crowned SPARK Joshi Atlantic champion, closed out RISING HEAT EAST on a high note.
MODERN MYTH PHOTOGRAPHY]
With the various women’s promotions in Japan opening their doors to more international wrestlers, promotions such as SPARK offer opportunities for American prospects to build rapport with potential future colleagues, while also gaining a career understanding of what they should expect when they touch down in Japan (should they choose to pursue that). “It’s a dream come true,” said Texas native Jessie Elaban. “I wanted to bring everything that I learned in Japan to the States.”
Elaban, who formerly competed for NXT under the name Jessi Kamea, also joined Mina Shirakawa’s Club Venus stable during a 2023 Stardom stint. In a conversation after the show, she seemed grateful for the dynamic new platform in SPARK. “I am having to make adjustments between Japanese and American styles,” admitted Elaban. “But I feel like I'm able to be more fluid with the new me.”
In addition to helping talent grow and prosper, proliferation of American international leagues is an obvious benefit for fans of exciting, athletic, and hard-hitting wrestling. Promotions such as SPARK and Kitsune–and Sukeban, which filmed a colorful TV pilot this past September in New York City–have captured the imaginations of those who stream joshi shows and covet chances to see their favorite ring performers mix it up in person.
With the global presence of joshi continuing to mount, the future is bright for women’s wrestling. And, with the ever-increasing interest in Japanese wrestling, forbidden doors are getting kicked open around the world.

Alright so I've been writing something, though a bit about X vol8 and idk if I'm missing something but: Subaru basically lifted a Kekai, Nakano plaza kept on crumbling and buncha people died? He rly said he doesn't care about fate of the world and meant it huh. Can't spoil 😎's dramatic 🌸 exist
Ik later on Karen defeated Nataku and called the draw with Yuuto in Ginza and Ginza remained standing. Also idk where it was but Yuzuriha and Kamui fought Fuuma, he retreated and there was no damage left on real world. Did Seishirou did too much damage to Nakano plaza before Subaru raised a Kekai or was something else in question?

Being 28 in pics
Semakin dekat dengan the big 3-0, mari embrace my final years of being in my 20s.
Hari ini diawali dengan ingin menjadikan hari ini lebih produktif dibandingkan dengan hari-hari Minggu biasanya. Haha.
Tapi tetap enak. White mushroom sauce + balsamic salad + wedges will never go wrong:
Tumblr media
Huhu. Makin tua entah kenapa attention span makin buruk dan makin susah ngeberesin baca buku :< Ini Crying at H Mart sama Quran versi translasi-nya Oxford aja gak beres-beres aku baca. Terus karena kemarin abis nonton video-nya Joram van Kleveren, aku minta minjem buku Muhammad-nya Martin Lings sama Karen Armstrong supaya bisa aku baca sekalian.
Abis itu pas nyampe lagi di rumah akhirnya aku nge-dye atasanku yang warna putih nya putih banget udah kayak baju seragam sekolah. Gak suka. Nonton video youtube aja how to dye clothes with tea leaves. Hasil before afternya kayak gini, pasti luntur sih tapi semoga nanti akan berakhir menjadi warna broken white yang cakep:
Tumblr media
Abis nulis ini mau ngecat rambut sama beresin The Nakano Thrift Shop - baru beres seperlima jadi belum tau akan seru atau ngga, tapi lumayan lah a break from Murakami’s weird (but somehow comforting) plot.
Makin tua makin mencari contentment aja di hal-hal kecil yang mundane. Today was perfect.

Live Audience Ranking
Note: this only includes the LIVE audience of the performances in ep3+4, plus the additional 3,000 bonus votes. Whoever won out of the two groups that performed the song got 3,000 bonus votes.
Second note: These are essentially useless rankings as they weren't actual fan votes submitted online/through mobile.
Third note: Tumblr hates ties in lists. Use the vote count to determine a tie. Most everything from rank 36 onward is a tie.

LIST OF CHANGES FROM CANON:
CLASS 76-A
Makoto ends up befriending most of Class 76-A early on. In particular Seiko, Izayoi and Ruruka. He ends up mediating between the three and helping them reconcile thus allowing the trio to begin again as friends.
Seiko and Ruruka never get expelled because the talent show goes off without a hitch since Natsumi never died ergo Nagito doesn't try to get an explosive bottle.
Miaya ends up getting surgery from Kanata towards the end of her third year to help her walk (with the help of Monaca's robotic exoskeleton)
Jotaro never wears a mask, he has a much better home life
Nagisa still has overbearing parents but being in Hope's Peak allows him more distance from them. Eventually his parents end up being fired and separated from him once Jin gets enough evidence. (Thank Gozu for that....and Kotomi xD)
Eri Wan and Taruhi are Ultimates and best friends.
THE GREAT GOZU IS THE GREATEST TEACHER!
Class 77-A
Shinobu doesn't lose her arm during the Togami tragedy but she still does lose her eye.
Misaki Asano and Mekuru Katsuragi are mostly still the same but obviously students XD
Nazuna and Tsukiyo are Ultimates now.
Yasuke is more of an older brother to Junko and Ryoko rather than (In my opinion) a tacked on love interest. He also cures Ryoko's memory problems early on. Oh and he doesn't die of course :P
Masaru doesn't get physically abused by his father
Juzo is a teacher which is going to be INTERESTING. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Class 77-B (Danganronpa Goodbye Despair)
Hiyoko ends up through Mahiru, Sonia, and Chiaki stop bullying Mikan and become less toxic
Ibuki is actually a musician now and not a liar. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Chiaki doesn't die and is more involved as a class rep with making her class more united than ever. She also helps Izuru alongside the completed Neo World Program to have him successfully merge with Hajime.
Mikan ends up becoming friends with Hiyoko later on and the rest of her class. She also develops a bond with Rei Shimizu but after befriending Chiaki and Makoto, Mikan helps Shimizu stop killing and to get help
Peko ends up developing more and more autonomy and bonds with not only her own class but taking on an older sister role for Mukuro and Maki. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (Let's be honest, we ALL wanted this)
Fuyuhiko DOESN'T kill Sato because Natsumi doesn't die. That will be explained below under Reserve Course. He still keeps an eye on the egg though whenever Natsumi is around him ;;;;;;( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Kazuichi becomes less of a simp and tries to actually be Sonia's friend. Although he's oddly hated by Monaca. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Hope Bagel doesn't blow up the Talent event since Natsumi never died. He actually ends up becoming less pessimistic by hanging out with Chiaki and Hope Egg.
Nekomaru's heart condition ends up getting fixed thanks to Seiko, Kanata and Mikan \( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)/ (with some advice from Izuru and Shimizu)
Ryota ends up becoming more involved with his class thanks to Imposter and Chiaki (whom imposter talked with in private about it all) coaxing him out his shell. Eventually like Chiaki did in the second year, Ryota in his third year uses his animation to make an awesome anime that everyone in his class loves alot.
Imposter later on comes out and tells his class about his talent thanks to Chiaki and Chisa. Oh and Fuyuhiko. XD I admit I got the fuyuhiko part from @pyropsychiccollector with his Goodbye Despair rewrite and how Imposter and Fuyuhiko had some sort of chemistry and mutual understanding.
Class 78-A (Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc)
Junko doesn't go through with the tragedy. If you played Danganronpa S you know it's an Alternate reality where she doesn't. It's like that. XD Okay this is actually going to be longer than most. This explanation I mean...err the changes XD. So Junko basically ends up getting sidetracked or hampered by dealing with her class and in particular Makoto's constant involvement in trying to get her to reconcile with Mukuro. That plus her eventual obsession feelings growing for makoto, dealing with kanade, and other stuff means she's either too busy or too conflicted to go through with it. This is a HUGE if not the heart of the Hope Universe. Junko also does go to therapy under Miaya and Kokoro's supervision. (Even once Miaya graduates.) Also @pyropsychiccollector came up with a cool backstory on how Junko is in an orphanage. I'm going to tweak it a bit for her and Ryoko with Junko being shielded as best as possible by Ryoko but still enough for her to make her lose faith in humanity. Oh and she uses Ryoko's talent to become a fashionista as well as using her own intellect. She's still dangerously smart but not as uber powerful.
Kyoko never loses Yui ergo she's more....hmm....she's definitely guarded like you know her but since her best friend didn't die, she's for sure more expressive or rather less cold is the word I use. The events of KIRIGIRI did NOT happen until she was in middle school with Yui and they solved the cases together. However any Kirigiri novel character you seen in the reserve course, as an ultimate or a teacher WERE NOT there during the cases. They are substituted by random people. She also gets Yui into the reserve course as part of her agreement to join Hope's Peak. And she does end up burying the hatchet with her dad~
Mukuro definitely ends up getting therapy also for her PTSD and other things she did in Fenrir. She also ends up trying to make it up to Ryoko and Junko instead of just Junko but Ryoko does forgive Mukuro after some time while Junko.....well.....let's just say it's going to take a few years. ;;;;;;( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Mukuro also ends up becoming more involved with her class thanks to Makoto, Peko and Sakura. Also the Giboura massacre does NOT happen.
Sayaka has her idol group attend Hope's Peak (albeit as reserve course). There's also a mini-arc with her and Kinari since she's responsible for Kinari being an underground idol. And boy Kinari is not happy. ;;;;;;( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Sayaka does eventually leave the idol industry once she graduates and learns throughout the years that she needs to separate herself (and maybe her friends) from a toxic industry
Toko never developed a crush on Byakuya since Makoto runs into her first before he meets other classmates during the first day. She DOES develop a crush on Makoto though XDDD Well I think it's better for her to be with the egg anyway~ Oh and yes Toko does learn to take showers thanks to Miaya and Kokoro helping her deal with her trauma. Also Toko is very caustic towards Byakuya at least early on when he's still rough around the edges towards everyone but in particular Makoto. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Jill stops serial killing and learns to instead going into hair styling. But the most important thing is thanks to Kokoro, Jill and Toko are able to communicate with each other and figure out a schedule so the two aren't constantly fighting over the same body to live their lives.
Sakura's boyfriend Kenshiro lives also thanks to Kanata, Mikan, Seiko and Shimizu. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) She's also a big sister for Tenko and Ayame and a best friend for Peko~
Celeste does change her dream to just trying to buy a castle for her and Makoto (only makoto and whatever kids they have) to live in. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) She still doesn't like being called by her real name though. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Monaca ends up as head of Towa Corp because her brother ends up being revealed as a pedophile from an anonymous whistleblower. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Her mean father also died in a very tragic accident years prior, so only Monaca is left to lead the company. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) And of course she's much older XD Still hates Kotoko though. Oh and Junko as well. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Kotoko never was sexually abused as a child and became an Ultimate. However Monaca still hates her. And Junko. And Toko. And Sayaka at first....but they become friends soon enough
Ryoko is the third sister to Junko and Mukuro. She's the Ultimate Analyst with Junko being the Ultimate Mastermind/Despair/Fashionista. She is still an adorable cinnabun however she hates being overlooked when people focus on Mukuro and Junko.
Chihiro is now born female
There is no Leon, he never got scouted.
There is no Hifumi, he never got scouted.
There is no Yasuhiro, he doesn't exist.
Class 78-B (Super Danganronpa Another 2)
Sora is not an AI but an actual person and Akane Taira's older sister. Her talent is Ultimate Child Caregiver.
There is NO Void and Utsuro.
Emma managed to run from her abusive father early on and ended up getting adopted by a couple who found her. This means no sexual abuse or child prostitution happened. She's also going to be a very interesting......friend.....to Celeste and Kotoko. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Hibiki never became broken by Kanade since their parents ended up getting a divorce early on thus causing the two sisters to live separately. However, the twins still do have their synchronicity which will be explained under Kanade.
Iroha fortunately had one of her older siblings help her out by taking time to teach her how to paint so their parents can stop emotionally and physically abusing her. This leads to her developing her skills as the Ultimate Painter and she soon gets scouted into Hope's Peak.
Kanade still is friends with her sister but she's not obsessive over her because she never had that early moment when her sister kept insulting her and depending on her due to the divorce. However, she did still kill a few people that she considered rivals to their group or anyone who tried to take advantage of her and hibiki. But, Kanade has a new rival in both intellect and on the battlefield of love....that rival being Junko. (Also ends up getting therapy alongside Junko, Mukuro, Fuyuhiko and others XP)
Kokoro is NOT Mikako's mother. They have no relationship whatsoever. She does still have alexithymia so that's a core element that persist. Fortunately though, thanks to Makoto, Miaya, Sora and Yasuke she ends up not going on the wrong path but instead learns to live with her condition and becomes best friends with Miaya, Yasuke and yes Emma.
Mikado doesn't develop an AI that kills and replaces him. Instead he's actually the Ultimate Wizard much to Himiko's ire.
Nikei is just normal since there's no void or utsuro. Also he's the Ultimate reporter not journalist.
Takumi and Shuji are ultimate's since the giboura massacre never happened.
Class 79-A (Danganronpa V3)
Himiko gets a growth spurt like Hiyoko did around her second year. She also hates Mikado.
Kaede DOESN'T have a twin sister. What a ridiculous attempt at trying to derail people in V3 -___-******
Kirumi ISN'T the prime minister either. There's no reason for her to be so with no tragedy or random meteor strikes.
Maki is still mostly the same except she befriends the egg and the both of them convince Jin to help her get out the business when she graduates or at the very least try to suggest a talent change. And she too gets therapy.
Tenko eventually gets over her immense misandry thanks to Makoto, Sakura and Peko. Also she's less of a Himiko simp in her second year.
Tsumugi isn't a Junko clone but an actual cosplayer. Basically everything you knew about her from FTE's and interactions except the whole mastermind nonsense.
Kaito doesn't get a random blood disease because it was written to be so. -____-***
Kokichi actually ends up befriending Makoto, Shuichi, Yuki and Nagito. But unfortunately he's still a pain in the ass although it's far less malicious XD.
Korekiyo's sister never dies and as such he doesn't become a serial killer.
Ryoma ends up getting pardoned once he graduates thanks to Hiroko having Ikue work things out with the courts although he still has to do community service for a bit
Shuichi is not the ultimate detective but rather the ultimate criminologist.
Class 79-B (Danganronpa Another)
Taira is no longer the Ultimate Maid but rather the Ultimate Housekeeper. She still has her hidden issues but she's also best friends with Ayame. Doesn't like Kirumi much and vise versa~ Or Junko and Kanade XD
Kizuna is initially shallow but she does become better as she starts to value Friendships and non-materialistic things.
Mikako doesn't have a chip in her brain nor is she affected by anything that makes her silent. Yes. This means cheerful Mikako is the norm. >________> Just keep her away from Satsuki and Ibuki. All three of them must be separated at all times. Also Mikako is Yamato's half sister.
Rei is still a Tsundere cubed. She does become nicer though as time progresses like Byakuya. Speaking of which those two do NOT get along at all.
Yuki is Class 79 Lucky student. He's not Utsuro so basically Chapter 1-3 Yuki. Ergo he's inbetween Shuichi and Makoto personality wise. Or maybe Hajime and Makoto
Kinji's church orphanage gets an anonymous donation from someone who may or may not be Junko.
Kinjo is more chill thanks to Ikue, Yuki, Makoto and Kyoko. However he is still very rigid in his ideology.
Yamato is no longer the Ultimate Inventor but now the Ultimate Architect. And there's nothing that's affecting his brain that makes him act weird.
Class 80-A (Danganronpa Re:Birth)
Ayumu is canonically female
Aruma has an expanded backstory as well as everyone else courtesy of @pyropsychiccollector. She's also an official agent of chaos (❋•‿•❋)
Kasumi has been renamed to Kazumi and there's an ongoing debate about whether her powers are real or not (人◕ω◕)
Mikoto now has an ongoing family rivalry with the Kirigiri's
Marin is on Ryoko's hit list for "tampering with the weather"
Narumi is a bit taller now. No Loli's allowed! Also she's not a mastermind and is just a gourmet.
Komaru is now the Ultimate Little Sister and is a part of this class! (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕) Some may doubt her but she's here to stay.
Class 80-B (Danganronpa Coward's Paradise)
Anko is no longer a ??? but the Ultimate Mortician!
Hana is the original one responsible for making Makoto's signature hoodie and knew Makoto from black root as she was a freshman when he was a senior there.
Honoka is also an agent of chaos alongside: Ibuki, Mikako, Satsuki and Aruma
Stella is now the Ultimate TV Superstar~ Expect a brewing rivalry between her and Emma (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)
Reserve Course
Okay to save ALOT of time, yes everyone you've seen is on the reserve course. Just assume they got in due to their family or whatever. This post is already pretty long as is. And their are two teachers for them. There's quite literally thousands of Reserve course students so for time's sake and my own mental health I'm not going to list every class structure lol.
Natsumi doesn't get killed by Sato because her and Sato are a year younger which means they both befriended Makoto which prevents the murder. Although the two fight over something else now. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Sayaka's Idol group named Ayaka, Satomi, Kasumi (the one with the ribbon) and Haruka (red haired one) join the reserve course thanks to Sayaka's clout. However their friendship will be tested with Sayaka being an Ultimate with her own class being friends and the most popular member while they are in the reserve course. Doesn't help that Kinari's driving that dagger in deeper.
Kinari becomes an Underground Idol due to Sayaka sabotaging and ruining her career while the two were candidates for Ultimate Idol. As such Kinari joins the reserve course but has a deep hatred for Sayaka and her group. She did do Gravure shots which she's ashamed of and feels like her career is nearly over but.....Sayaka does want to make it up to Kinari for her past actions. What happens next? Stay tuned in the future. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Mimiko is still a serial killing yandere but Peko helps her seek therapy due to a mutual understanding after she tried to kill Makoto for getting close to Kinari (Which obviously failed and with the egg not even being aware but fortunately Peko stopped her). As such Mimiko is still a Kinari stan but she's trying to be better. And of course Makoto can't catch a break with these Yandere's so Mimiko is also attracted to him. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Meruko is best friends with Sachi. She also keeps insisting she should be an Ultimate Psychic but nobody believes her.
Sachi is still a grudge holding bitter person but she does have her good qualities as well. Also best friends with Meruko who provides her with a lot of Optimism about things. Hates Kyoko for being a huge barrier to her being the Ultimate Detective. Also hates Natsumi because she's Yakuza and well also Peko and Fuyuhiko XDDD Sachi was raised to be a detective after all.
Yui of course doesn't die and is the same age as Kyoko. She helps Kyoko solve the cases in Kirigiri and gets put in the reserve course thanks to Kyoko convincing her father. She also is disliked by Sachi for being best friends with Kyoko.
Kanon doesn't have an effectuation with Leon but rather with the Egg since they've met when he was in middle school. (She of course hasn't stalked him since that meeting) Upon entering Hope's Peak she of course declares herself openly as Makoto's girlfriend much to the ire, confusion, shock or anger to the other girls.
Hajime does become Izuru but thanks to Yasuke living the Neo World Program is fully complete and is used to help him merge with Hajime. Of course Chiaki living means that he's convinced to do such a thing and upon being restored he works with Makoto and others to take down the Steering Committee.
Licorne is the same age as Yui and Kyoko.
Hope's Peak Staff
Kyosuke has Chisa and Juzo join Hope's Peak as teachers due to Jin and Tengan reaching out to him. Of course he's still working on opening his branch of Hope's Peak in America.
Jin plays a more pivotal role by contacting Taehime to investigate the Reserve Course and how the finances are being handled. In short, Jin, Tengan, and a few teachers are working in secret to overthrow the Steering Committee as the Reserve Course become more and more frustrated. In a way there will be a tragedy but not like what you've come to known. The reserve course and ultimates are going to get massive reforms once the dust clears.
Tengan has the Ultimate Elite Task Force infiltrate as teachers to serve as his eyes and ears and getting more information on the committee. That's right. Our favorite grandpa gets moved by the hope of all the class reps and the headmaster to try and get rid of the corruption of Hope's Peak. He also wants to step down for being involved with the Kamakura project.
Chisa never gets expelled. However there will be an interesting moment where she breaks up a fight between Sachi and Fuyuhiko and becomes aware of her own blindspot when it comes to non-ultimates. Oh and Ikue, Hiroko, the Former Ultimate Make-up Artist and the members of the Elite Task Force are all part of Class 74. She's also responsible for getting Aimi the aforementioned Make-up artist to come and help teach a class later on.
Ikue is a colleague of Taehime and also the former ultimate police officer. She decides to go and teach due to Jin asking her to infiltrate and investigate the corruption of Hope's Peak. While Taehime looks into the paper trail, Ikue looks into the Kamakura project.
Hiroko is the same age as Chisa and is the Former Ultimate Clairvoyant with a Success rate of 75%. She's never had a child either and never met Yasuhiro's father due to these events. However she does try not to use her talent due to a tragic incident where she got her prediction wrong off the 25%....And a person will help her embrace her talent once more. A lucky person. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Aimi (A name I made) decides to teach a class due to Chisa's persistence. Unfortunately chisa didn't mention how....problematic her class can be (Danganronpa Another 1 cast). ;;;;;;;;;( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Ariana, Yukiko, Izumi and Mitsuru (Talents mentioned in the talent list. They are four of the ETF - Elite Task Force) serve as the Fashion/Fashion History, History, PE (In terms of things involving dodging and accuracy), and Math teachers.
Sae was never married and is a reserve course teacher. She does however have a detached view of her class initially but begins bonding with them as time goes on. It's a cool little mini character progression I wanted to give her.
Taehime is working for Jin to investigate the Financials of the reserve course and also any illegal or illicit paper trail as evidence for Jin to uncover the Committee's corruption to the masses and authorities. She also begins to bond with her class as time goes on also after uncovering and witnessing the struggles the reserve course goes through.
Shimizu serves as the nurse for the reserve course but she's still a serial killer who uses parasites. However, she doesn't insert any parasites into her own body. She does befriend Mikan as she believes the two are kindred spirits and they both enjoy talking about parasites but over time Shimizu notices that Mikan is becoming less and less dark. Much to her frustration of course. Eventually Mikan manages to reach out to Rei and stop her from committing any more killings and to seek therapy.
Okay. And that's ALL the changes for the Hope Universe. Yes it's a huge long post but I actually enjoyed typing it. Of course this will be pinned. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Who knows later on I may just make a link and copy/paste this to a document that contains the link. We'll see. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Doubt season 4 prologue translation (Doubt~ Underworld edition~ Do you enjoy dark lies?~)
Words: 2180
Reading time (all parts): 8 minutes

Bold text = hints which were written in pink
The prologue starts with MC saying her dream is to be the bride of her loved one.
Tumblr media
We then move to her work place – the hospital she works at as a nurse. She runs into her boyfriend who also works there, Takeshi Aida (who she lives with) and tells him she made onigiri for when he gets back from his late shift. Lately he’s been busy studying, and even last Tuesday they had to postpone their plans cause he had some business. He says they should go somewhere next time they both have time off. MC goes to inspect their shift timetable and takes a photo.
Evidence gathered
Photo of timetable
MC has seen a wedding magazine(?) at their place and is thinking that Takeshi is thinking of proposing sometime soon. They’ve been together for 3 years. She’s thinking about how happy she will be if she marries him.
Tumblr media
Sumika Shito who is also a nurse and MC’s friend. Sumika is wondering why MC is so happy but she doesn’t explain (haha) and Sumika remarks that Takeshi is working at other hospitals too and that she’s thinking he’s saving up for a wedding. MC didn’t know about that and thinks about how he’s already so busy but going to those lengths anyway.
Tumblr media
Yoichi Tokiwa, a medical intern enters the staffroom. There’s some talk about their patients (I think). Another nurse, Shunsuke Wataya enters also.
Tumblr media
He says that last night they’ve admitted a “special patient”. Sumika is guessing if it’s a politician, an actor or… a yakuza? Lol her face:
Tumblr media
Shunsuke is basically like yup you got it… MC panics and goes to escape the room when a senior nurse comes in and asks her to be in charge of the VIP patient. And yep, it’s none other than MC’s father.
Tumblr media
He is a leader of one of the major yakuza groups, “Ryumon” (literally dragon gate). Next to his bed, is his right hand man and number 2 Ao Okura.
Tumblr media
MC's father is in the hospital because he collapsed yesterday, and he laughs saying he thought he died. MC wants him transferred immediately. She left her family 7 years ago, when she went to nursing school because she wants nothing to do with the underworld.
Her father remarks that she’s grown to look like her mother. Kosaku Ichimura, the treating doctor enters.
Tumblr media
He’s usually super busy and MC is thinking about how he must have been assigned because Okura demanded the top doctor of the hospital. MC makes an excuse to leave because she doesn’t want Ichimura-sensei and Sumika to find out about her relationship (to her father and the yakuza). As she’s going down the hallway she runs smack into Takeshi who tells her not to push herself too hard. As she watches him go she thinks about how she REALLY doesn’t want him knowing she is a daughter to a yakuza but that would mean lying for her whole life… She then notices a pen on the floor.
Evidence gathered
Cat shaped pen
She meets Okura at a nearby café wanting to have her father transferred. She tells him about how her mother was a nurse who fell in love with her father when he was admitted as a patient. After MC was born was when her father told her mother about him being a yakuza boss. Then, when MC was 5 years old an accident has left MC’s mother in a coma ever since. MC believes she’s been robbed of a normal life being tied to the underworld and so left it all behind and cut all ties.
Tumblr media
Okura asks if that’s all and calls her a “stupid brat” who doesn’t understand the world. He hands her a slip of paper which shows he is transferring. He writes down her father’s contact info on special Ryumon memo pad paper.
Evidence gathered
Memo with father’s phone number
He tells her to visit/contact again before he dies. MC asks what his illness is and he has stage 4 cancer, with an estimated one year left.
MC now back at home is thinking about contacting her friend, Karen Nakano who like her, is a daughter of a yakuza. She runs a club in Ginza. She messages her on TalkTime telling her she wants some advice and that her father has cancer. Karen is shocked, saying he visited the club last week, on February 10th (last Tuesday) with a young guy she hasn’t seen before though remarks that for once he wasn’t smoking. She sends a photo she took at that time. MC looks at the photo and sees someone who looks like Takeshi in the back…
Evidence gathered
Photo of father and Karen
MC asks Karen about it but Karen says she was quite busy and doesn’t quite remember. That was the Tuesday that MC had plans with Takeshi that fell through. The delivery man comes, delivering a letter for Takeshi with the words “credit company” printed on it (he’s buying stuff on credit).
Evidence gathered
Registered envelope
She notices the place is a bit messy and goes to tidy up.
Evidence gathered
Wedding magazine
Memo (with amounts of money written on it)
Taxi fare receipt
Short term job finding magazine
Slot machine guidebook
MC isn’t sure why he has a guidebook for slot machines. When she sees that he has a magazine advertising short term jobs (and high paying) she thinks he may be saving up for a wedding. But as a whole the items are suspicious and she thinks that Takeshi and her dad might have a connection.
Takeshi then returns home but as MC has been preoccupied she hasn’t made anything to eat. He suggests going out and goes off to get changed when he receives a TalkTime message (he left his phone on the table). MC sees it and her suspicions are confirmed – he’s hiding something big from her and she needs to get to the bottom of it.
Evidence gathered
Photo of Takeshi’s smartphone screen
Tumblr media
Takeshi: I’m ready to go.
MC: Before that, there’s something I need to ask.
10 photo limit reached, continued in part two:

Kisekae Insights #24: GJ Club - how a spinon became a spinoff featuring Kyōya and Kasumi Shinomiya
Tumblr media
(Art by 結城辰也)
The Kisekae Insights series has allowed me to bring the spotlight back on Waifu Network animes that I haven’t posted much about in the past due to lack of fanart or lack of interest. Like Hidamari Sketch in the last instalment, GJ Club will be no exception until I continue posting the usual content in my anime posts. Honestly, it was good while it lasted.
While Hidamari Sketch is a fairly popular and notable anime, GJ Club, sadly, isn’t. The anime was adapted from the light novel series written by Shin Araki and it only received one 12-episode season in 2013 and an OVA in 2014. Since it is a slice-of-life series, not much is known about the characters’ histories, which made it very easy to adapt into my personal project. All these factors coinciding with it being the 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who made GJ Club the perfect anime to adapt and expand on.
Background information
For some reason, the light novel has been a bit hard to find. In short, while you are able to read it online, the sources are unfortunately scarce.
From 2013 to 2015, NanoDesu Translations posted translations of the light novel. They published a PDF and EPUB of the first volume (which is available on archive.org) and translated up to Chapter 17 of the second volume. It was then abandoned for two years before Haraguro Scanlations picked it up. As of September 2018, they only finished up to Chapter 3 of the third volume (with the first chapter being translated by Shadowys on Baka-Tsuki) and there are no further updates after that, with the exception of a one-off chapter released in November 2020.
As of August 2021, however, all the original translations by NanoDesu seem to have been deleted from their site. All the translations are available on AsiaNovel, but there are no illustrations because the reader doesn’t seem to support images. If the images weren’t discarded in the code of the novels, then all they would need to do is add support for them and then they would appear.
There are 9 volumes and two special volumes for GJ Club along with 8 volumes and a special volume for its middle school spinoff. It’s honestly telling how popular the series was when the translators have all but abandoned it.
Shin Araki also wrote an additional spinoff to GJ Club, namely GE: Good Eater, and a sequel, namely KB Club. GE is set in a fantasy world with the characters being based off the characters of GJ Club, while KB Club turns everything meta by having both series be the creations of a high school light novel club, with the characters of GJ Club being based off the members of said club, right down to their names. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of that approach given how I’ve adapted GJ Club into my personal project. In the end, I guess we’ll never really know what happens in the novels, but at least we have this.
Watching the anime and listening to the character music was how I first realised that anime was sexist to males because of the female-centric focus in most animes. Kyōya only gets one character song in the series, and even then it’s a duet with Megumi. If that isn’t sexist to you, then I don’t know how I can convince you that a lot of animes are sexist.
In January 2015, I published two posts outlining my idea for an English dub of the series that also fits with GJ Club’s depiction in my personal project. The setting would be changed to London, England, specifically the areas of Chiswick, Ealing and Acton (where their school is located) and the characters would speak with British accents. The images in the original post are dead because I idiotically copied the images from the site instead of saving and reuploading them to the post, but since I’m grubbing for content anyway, I’m going to repost my character details as follows:
Kyōya: The protagonist of the series. When he started Year 10, he was kidnapped by the girls when he walked into an old school building, hoping to find the Culture Club. He moved to London from Manchester just before he started Year 7. His best friend outside the club is someone named Tesshin Yokomizo (横溝徹心) who is a local and not seen in the anime. In the GJ Club, he is nicknamed “Kyoro” and despite his spinelessness, he seems to have talent in dealing with the girls around him. His birthday is December 18. Due to a crisis involving his family during his childhood, he and his sister Kasumi were left in the care of a family guardian just before they moved to London, but she left when Kyōya started Year 10. It might have been that childhood incident that emotionally scarred him and left him spineless…
Mao: The Year 11 president of the GJ Club. Her family is rich and they live in a mansion in Ealing. She has a habit of biting and picking on Kyōya when she is bored or angry. She always reads books and watches shows without kissing scenes.
Shion: The only daughter in her family, Shion is an expert chess player with many brothers, all experts in some kind of activity. She speaks in a Birmingham (Brummie) accent because her mother and a few of her brothers were born in Birmingham. It is unknown if Shion was born in Birmingham herself.
Megumi: The calm and nice middle sister of the Amatsuka family. She likes knitting and she is always seen making tea and cakes in the club room. In the same year level as Kyōya.
Kirara: Born in Swansea, Wales, Kirara is the tallest and strongest member of the club. She speaks English in simple, monotone sentences. Welsh is her first language. Kirara can be seen eating meat, sometimes sharing it with Kyōya, but not with anyone else. She is afraid of spiders and has little tolerance to alcohol.
Tamaki: (voiced by Karen Gillan!) The newest member of the GJ Club when Kyōya becomes a Year 11 student. Like Kyōya, she is kidnapped and forced to join the club. Her nickname is “Tama”. Her family is from Glasgow and they run a Shinto shrine in Acton. She has several younger siblings.
Kasumi: Kyōya’s younger sister, who was born in Manchester. After a visit to the GJ Club, she becomes inspired to start a middle school division when she starts Year 7. She has a brother complex and she mistook Mao for being a primary school student when she met her. Her proficiency in Welsh is better than her brother’s, who can probably speak at a beginner level.
Geraldine: Shortened to “Jill”. She moved to Chiswick from Swansea to be with her sister, Kirara. She first met Kyōya at Ealing Broadway Station when she had difficulty buying a Tube ticket. She didn’t really understand how to use the ticket machine, so Kyōya went to help her. After this, Jill considered Kyōya her “samurai master”. Jill doesn’t speak English fluently, so she relies on her whiteboard to communicate with the others. She is as strong as her sister and she joins Kasumi’s GJ Club when she starts Year 7 in Chiswick.
Seira: The youngest sister of the Amatsuka family. Though she speaks in a typical London accent, she sometimes talks through her cat clip in Received Pronunciation (the Queen’s English/RP) using ventriloquism to state her true feelings to Kyōya, who she has a grudge against.
Mori: The maid of the Amatsuka family. She likes to ride a motorcycle.  A running gag is her twirling before Kyōya much to his pleasure and annoyance to the rest of the club members. Sometimes, her mother takes her place without the family even noticing due to their identical appearance.
Kyōya, Kasumi and Momoka: The Brother, the Child and the Yandere
Normally in previous instalments, I would have described each character separately, but because their backstories are heavily intertwined, I will introduce them all at once in this section. Most of the backstory takes place around the Battle of Koshi Castle in December 2013 and during the Manchester Campaign of 2005-2013, which I have already covered in #15.
Tumblr media
When Hiroki Ichigo’s twelfth incarnation was killed at Koshi Castle, he managed to escape in his TARDIS, where he regenerated into his new prototype, namely a four-year-old Kyōya. The TARDIS crashes outside North Manchester General Hospital on 11 December 2005.
Earlier, Hiroki and Akari’s gametes (along with those of Hiroki’s brothers and their families) were taken by Reona Yukawa and placed in the Progenitor so that they could breed super-soldiers out of them. When Takumi Kamijō and Kyōko Sakura manage to escape from their cells (saving Nodoka Manabe and Azusa Nakano in the process), he changes the destination of the baby about to be released into the Progenitor’s time portal. That baby was Kasumi, one of the super-soldiers grown from Hiroki and Akari’s DNA. She ended up at the same hospital as well and was about to be taken home by a couple when Girl Power killed them, resulting in Kasumi being taken by Akari and Shaun.
Tumblr media
What remained of Hiroki was contacted by the spirit of Walpurgisnacht. Making a deal with her, Hiroki regenerated into his thirteenth incarnation, the female Momoka Mizutani. No, Momoka is not an OC for GJ Club, but she is based on the character of Apple Lam Chung-yan from the TVB drama A Great Way to Care II, played by Tavia Yeung. Momoka takes Hiroki’s TARDIS and heads to Salford, where with the help of Walpurgisnacht, she establishes a cha chaan teng café in the middle of a trading estate and hires a group of red drone Daleks as her workers, hiding their identities by having them disguise themselves as humans.
Tumblr media
Over the next eight years, Momoka gets close to the new Shinomiya family by influencing them through Kyōya’s dreams to come to her café. Eight years later, on 11 December 2013, the Fourth and Fifth Doctors come in with their companions. When the Shinomiya family come in, a confrontation with Ayaka Kikuchi and her army ensues before Momoka transmats the Shinomiya family to a Dalek spaceship, where she prepares to execute them using the Yashio’ori. However, the Yashio’ori is sabotaged by the enemy army so that the laser beam would not charge.
As Ayaka and her army attack the Dalek ship, Momoka uses the Dalek-enhanced machine guns to fend them off. While two Doctors confront the Master, Momoka is killed by Girl Power officers, resulting in Walpurgisnacht taking over her body as she regenerates, maintaining her current appearance. Read #15 to find out what happens after this.
Once the Battle of Koshi Castle and the Manchester Campaign conclude, the Fourth Doctor helps Kyōya and Kasumi move to Chiswick in 2008. Five years later, the events of the GJ Club anime take place. During his time in Chiswick, Kyōya gets a job at the post office there and later, studies a double degree in Japanese Studies and Politics at SOAS in the University of London while also learning Cantonese, Mandarin and Welsh in weekend and evening courses (apparently he also wanted to learn Taiwanese but they weren’t running any courses, but that’s alright, he can always learn it somewhere else, which he presumably did).
On a side note, I volunteered myself to be Kyōya’s English voice actor, so I’ve practiced my Mancunian accent by watching actors like Christopher Eccleston, Stephen Tompkinson, Karl Pilkington and maybe a bit of Peter Kay as well. The only problem was that I’m not even sure that my accent is even Manc because I can’t tell if I’m getting it wrong and sounding like someone from Liverpool, Yorkshire, Newcastle or even Scotland. Oh well, that’s what happens when you really get into things.
I don’t buy expansion packs, I make my own (budget allowing)
So as I said, GJ Club only got one season and an OVA to go with it. Do Kyōya and the GJ Club make further appearances in the series? You bet your ass they do.
After being absent for much of the Next Gen Series in 2014, Kyōya and Kasumi receive a letter from their aunt, Narutaki, asking to meet in Hong Kong after their mother, Akari, went missing following the Siege of Ōsaka, only to be followed by Mao and the rest of the GJ Club, who learnt where he was going and managed to get on the same flight as them.
Narutaki, who had taken her Girl Power friends and established a rogue faction separate from the main group, takes the GJ Club to Nijō Castle, where she explains the background behind the Manchester Campaign and the events of Series 8 and 9. Soon after, Girl Power’s commander, Daniel, sends his brother, Nathan, out to find Narutaki. Kyōya tries to contact Hiroki, but he is unable to get through to him. Luckily, the TARDIS arrives and the Doctor and Hiroki help Angela and the others repel the attacking Girl Power forces. Some more things happen and by the end of the story, we learn that Kyōya and Mao are dating.
That Christmas, Kyōya and Kasumi head up to Manchester, but the Doctor briefly takes them and their friends back to Hong Kong for a picnic with Hiroki and the rest of the Zhuge family.
A few years later in 2018, the GJ Club and Momoka get a cameo at the start and end of the Gokaiger TV movie special. By this point in time, Momoka’s café in Manchester has expanded to many other branches around the UK and in Hong Kong.
The next year in 2019, Kyōya, Kasumi, Mao and Megumi are featured in a four-part adventure in Soulbound Series 3, helping the cast solve the mystery of Parker’s past and Shinbu’s origins. Two years after in 2021, Kyōya and Kasumi move to Hong Kong (along with the GJ Club) and join the Superhero Project as the new ShinkenRed and ZyuohTiger. You’d think Kyōya would be against violence given his harmless tendencies, but I suppose his character has developed over the years despite having abandonment issues.
So this has been the involvement of GJ Club in my personal project. It’s a shame the series wasn’t more popular or it could have gotten a second season, a manga, more (and frequent) translations of the light novel or hell, even a licenced release. This series is just like Sea Princesses in how popular it was, but despite the number of episodes the anime got, at least Shin Araki hasn’t abandoned the series (by putting it in a spinoff no less) unlike Fabio Yabu, who hasn’t made anything new for Sea Princesses since 2010 after getting more animated episodes than GJ Club did. On the other hand though, neglected series with little material has been good development fodder for my personal project as it allowed me to bring awareness to the existence of those series while also developing backstories and afterstories for them.

Five Women’s Wrestling Matches To Watch Now That GLOW Is Canceled
Bayley vs Sasha Banks at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn
Half of the Four Horsewomen of NXT, and the story is pretty easy to follow: Bayley is the plucky hero who never gives up and Sasha Banks is the arrogant heel who thinks Bayley is pathetic. Fun fact: GLOW used part of this match’s closing sequence in the opening credits.
Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair in a Last Woman Standing Match at Evolution
The other half of the NXT Horsewomen. The story is: Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair were best friends, and then Becky was tired of being stuck in Charlotte’s shadow so she slapped Charlotte in the face and took her title, so now they’re having a mega blow off. This match has a ton of painful spots like Charlotte Flair putting Becky’s leg in a lock inside a ladder. It rules.
Io Shirai vs Candice LeRae at NXT Takeover: Toronto
Like the last entry, this is the story of two best friends, but one turned on the other, this case Io Shirai hit Candice LeRae with a steel chair, and Candice is understandably a bit miffed about it. This is the shortest match on this list, but the fastest paced and most athletic of the bunch.
Asuka vs Sasha Banks at WWE at SummerSlam 2020
Honestly this is probably the most skippable of the bunch, for one it’s the most recent, and for another it’s more about the story between Sasha Banks and her friend Bayley (who is now a bad guy and has a Karen haircut. Wrestling story telling.), but I put it on here because I was watching it on mute while on Zoom with friends, and Sasha Banks gives Asuka a sunset flip power bomb onto the matted floor that made me yell and I had to pretend I saw a spider or something, and then when I saw it with sound two hours later, and the THUMP noise that move made gave me the same feeling.
Manami Toyota vs Bull Nakano in All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling
Admittedly, Joshi Wrestling is a bit of a blind spot for me, but I watched this today and...I don’t think anyone in Japan told them pro wrestling was fake until 2002. Bull Nakano (who looks like a lost Dragonball Z villain) just kicks Manami Toyota IN THE HEAD. And drops her. ON HER HEAD. This is 13 minutes of chaos.
