Day 33 - to Klöntal
Rain on and off this morning at Santa Maria, but conditions still pretty good for a wander around the forest, the excitement exaggerated by my stubborn refusal to obey the signage. See photo..
Rather than a refusal to obey, perhaps a reluctance to believe that the path really should be closed.
It’s healthily rooted in a bent to ignore an authority telling me I shouldn’t walk somewhere.
The fun we wouldn’t have had if the leader had obeyed the sign discouraging passage into the old mine shaft above Llanwrst, mis-translating Perygl as Welcome..
I need to find out for myself.. and I did. A kilometre or so down the track and a landslide, descending 80 metres at least to the valley below. No chance to pass. Even Roja turned back. But I was able to get down and round, through the rough forest to the other side of the closure.
After lunch and pack up, a chance to reflect on what a tremendous stopover place this had been, for the last 4 days. Just the occasional dog walker passing, all stopping to nod and shout for a good day.
Then an afternoon of a spectacular drive, over several passes, in snow showers and sunny parts, which added to the vista; Zemez then Davos still 2 metres deep in snow. The latter part was much busier, but I still reached the far end of the lake at Klöntal just after 5 pm.
There’s a large campsite, which is something of an eyesore against the arresting peaks behind. The vast majority of pitches are permanent caravans, covered in winter with ugly and dirty tarpaulins. There seems to be no regulation as to what people can do with their pitch. Most string up some decrepit awning, and fence off a border..
A few hundred metres up the narrow road, just as it finishes was a car park for hikers, but with no restrictions for vans. Directly next to the fast flowing river, it was ideal.

We went for the first little weekend cycle tour of the year last weekend! A much needed break from 24/7 work thoughts lately, and not feeling so good. I did my first century (ie first 100 mile bike ride) two weekends before that and it was awesome (might need its own post) but I felt really off all week after that. Multiple covid tests were taken and I took two sick days, and did absolutely nothing on both of those plus the weekend following them. I've still been getting bad headaches and weird dizzy spells but by now I think it must be stress? Because I've also not been feeling great mentally, and there's a lot of big things coming up and ongoing. Idk.
Anyway, this one was just lovely. It was supposed to rain all weekend so we decided to only camp sat to sun and take the bank holiday Monday to tidy and recover. The only rain we actually got was in the night, long after pitching the tent! So lucky. The campsite was beautiful, felt almost like a wild camp (pic 5). And I was just so happy to sleep in a tent, I've missed it so much :)
And then we got 4/5th up the pass at the beginning of our Sunday route... Only to be turned around by *snow*. In May!!! We ended up having lunch there because it was so pretty (pic 4), and while we were sitting there a guy actually came down on skis! We chatted to him for a bit and he said there usually isn't any snow there past March, it's just been such a crazy winter. We actually considered coming back next weekend to do the same ski tour, that would be so cool 🤣 but probably isn't happening as I don't have the full weekend off, and we've already put the gear away for summer. Maybe next year.
On the way home, we found a true hidden gem - a little cafe right on lake Zurich, which is normally overrun with people like, everywhere, off a bike path, with basically no one there and the loveliest people running it (pic 2). We sat by the water with our coffees and basked in the sun and it was pure bliss.
Grateful for this ❤
