BLACK BUTLER 153

So as we know, Black Butler often draw inspiration from actual Victorian events, people, or characters i.e: The sinking of the Titanic (Campania? arc), the murder arc (Sherlock Holmes, featuring Arthur Conan Doyle himself), etc. In this month’s chapter, O!Ciel and the gang spread out across England to investigate 4 locations associated with members of the Aurora Society, and already we can see some parallels to real-life people and events that might make an appearance in the future arc, namely: Florence Nightingale and H.H Holmes’ Murder Castle. 

1. Florence Nightingale 

When you hear of the keywords “Victorian”, “Nurse”, and “Wounded soldiers”, you will most likely think of Florence Nightingale, a woman widely considered as the founder of modern nursing. Born to an affluent family, she pursued her calling in the field of nursing despite her social standing and her family’s objections. Her dedication for her patients earned her the nicknames “Angel of the Crimea”, and “Lady of the Lamp”, during her station in the Crimean War, where she spent most of her waking hours tending to the injured soldiers, carrying a lamp as she make her rounds in the evenings.

In that very war, she was met with abysmal conditions upon arrival at the hospital, but she immediately set to work to improve sanitation and improve the general living conditions in said hospital. Her work reduced the hospital’s death rate by two-thirds (”miracle healer”?). Upon her return, Queen Victoria herself (!!) recognized her work by giving her a brooch that would later be known as the “Nightingale Jewel” and granted her a large sum of money that she later put into establishing a hospital and a training school for nurses.  Of course, in real-life her life-saving work was mostly by improving sanitation and reforming healthcare for the wounded, but perhaps we’ll see her likeness in this arc? 2. H.H Holmes’ Murder Castle

Alright this one might be a little more far-fetched considering it originally took place in Chicago. But it did take place in the late 1800s as well. So yes, basically H.H Holmes was (one of) America’s first serial killers, owner of the World’s Fair Hotel, dubbed as the “Murder Castle”.

Although Holmes claimed to have plans to make the third story into a hotel for the World’s Fair, the hotel never actually went into operation. The building was designed to contain mazes of hallways, gas chambers, false partitions, stairways that leads to dead-ends, metal-lined soundproof chambers, etc, as well as storefronts and regular apartments (including his own living space) to maintain the facade. In short, the perfect environment to commit murder. Rooms are often equipped with chutes to dispose bodies straight to the basement, where surgical instruments (Holmes was medically trained) and torture devices were found during further investigation. The exact number of victims were unknown as Holmes often sold the bones and organs of his victims to medical institutions and the black market, while disposing the remaining parts in vats of lime and acid or an incinerator. It is thought that the victims did not enter this murder mansion by force, often being his own employees (in the 2 years that he spent there, Holmes supposedly hired 150 women to work as stenographers for him) and his mistresses, who mostly came from wealthy families and were unheard of again.  Despite the events taking place in the US, I feel like it would make an interesting arc to see Sebastian and Ciel navigate through death traps in such a building. While it is unlikely for the resort to be killing guests as freely as Holmes did perhaps the inspiration could come in the form of how they dispose of the occasional body and secret passages to the guest rooms?

spoiler kuroshitsuji 153 summary

(warning: as my previous mistake on my past spoilers, i may advice you may or may not trust this short summary as you probably can wait the yen press chapter came out considering I’m still learning my japanese skill. Reason I have the urge to post this because I want to share what I’ve got after read RAWS spoilers from weibo so feel free point out the mistake) 

As we predict from previous chapter, Meylin and Ranmao are on mission to investigate Baron Heathfield in North Yorkshire, and in this chapter we were explained more the reason behind it. After Sebastian & Lau collecting a lot of informations, turns out there's some info that has connection with Aurora society in previous Campania ship incident. Despite many of the people are died, the members who did not board the ship were certainly counted many. So O!Ciel asked Sebastian to investigate again and after collecting information, there are four suspicious facilities: 

Baron Heathfield manor in North Yorkshire while they're looking for a maid employment however, they stop looking the requirement through newspaper (so Meyrin & Ranmao were tasked to work there)

New orphanage in Norfolk, they accepting any underage orphans and receiving high level education (so Finny & Snake were tasked to visit them) 

There's retired military service care in Wiltshire, who suspiciously have a nurse who had done a miracle cure to revitalize the physically & mentally injured soldier. Confirmed there are many doctors who affiliated with Aurora society are working in that area. (So Bard & Lau were tasked to investigate there)

And lastly there's a new established resort hotel in Brighton. Despite the accommodation are counted way too cheap for luxury hotel, their services are counted as top notch. It was confirmed that the nobles who worked as the hotel manager are also part of Aurora members so O!Ciel & Sebastian will investigate together on that place.

And that’s probably cover up some important moment in chapter 153 aside Meyrin almost made mistake again using the wrong cleaner and Sebastian investigate some weird incident. Only O!Ciel reminded everyone if those facilities have nothing to do with blood collection, they need to evacuate immediately. But if it’s found out they are connected, they need to quickly destroy the place.

Kuroshitsuji chapter 153 has brought repeated occurrence of the #4 to my attention once again. In recent arcs so far we've seen:

The Starlight 4

The 4 blood types

The 4 star lords

Of course there is always our Ciel's 4 servants

And now the 4 "regions" of England. The northern, southern, eastern, and western. (Like the four cardinal directions.)

In Japan 4 is considered an unlucky number. Four is considered to be unlucky because the word for four is shi (四/し) closely resembles the word for death shi (死/し). 

This might mean nothing but part of me keeps thinking this is a bad omen for the story. That Agni was just the beginning of the losses we will face.
