La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) (1946)
A young woman is forced to live with a beast to save her father but her friend and family seek to rescue her just as she becomes fond of her would-be captor.
There are distinctly more elements from the original lore from which the story is adapted than other versions like the Disney one, the opening is more reminiscent of Cinderella. The beast is just about endearing enough in some scenes thanks to the realistic make-up effects and how soft the fur looks. There’s some emphasis on internal qualities above beauty which is right but the understanding seems muddled.
The plot has the same eerie flaws as the original narrative like the dependence on Stockholm Syndrome and the various manipulative or possessive qualities the beast has that don’t help redeem him, not that he really needs redeeming since he’s not even ugly if you like cats. The harmful representation of love and romance shown is old-fashioned and entreats virtue only with many conditions.
An interesting choice was the use of anthropomorphized furnishings without making them fully aware, it adds to Belle’s paranoia since she’s always being watched and the disembodied limbs adds a little subtext about how the rich view servants. The lighting and direction is engaging and innovative throughout and the ending isn’t as lacklustre as it appears since it sort of gives up and lets them leave in a bizarre way which you have to respect a little.
The explanations for what caused the curse, why the boys don’t use the gold key, and even what brings them together are scant and thin at best. There’s little consequence for the many bad characters in the film, in fact the one that gets the most punishment is the one who’s poor intentions meant well, whereas the actively malicious people get little or no punishment, unlike many of the bloodier fables.
5/10 -Cant’ find a better example of average-
-Made during recovery from Nazi occupation so electricity was unpredictable and there were frequently blackouts.
-The studio and some locations were reportedly so cold that the cast and crew huddled around lights for warmth.
-The juddering effect in some parts is caused by the inconsistent quality and availability of film stock in France at the time.

my headcanon or scene wish(?) of modern Loustat is just them having a verbal fight until both of them just go quiet because it's Tiring, and Louis, who ofc has been sitting beautifully on his chair while this happening, says "come here". And Lestat just comes, lays down his head on Louis' lap, and Louis just moves his hand in Lestat's blond hair to calm them both. And the mood is like that scene of Belle letting the Beast drink from her hand in La Belle et la Bete (1946)

top 5 batb adaptations :]
finally a good fucking question that only i can answer
la belle et la bete (1946). i put it in the #1 spot because literally everything that came after owes everything to this movie. quite literally most of these i consider adaptions not of the original book but of this movie
beauty and the beast (1991). further proof that only gay people understand batb. one of the greatest musicals of all time
the shape of water (2017). yeah i consider it an adaption dw about it i’m an expert
megan kearney’s beauty and the beast. amazing comic that i will never stfu about even years after its completion AND it’s pulling references from utena of all things. these are all for gay people i pr
beauty and the beast (1987 series) okay yes this show is bad but hear me out. it has my favorite characterization of the beast himself. and it’s ron fucking perlman

What is ur fav movie!<3
I have such a hard time picking faves! I have so many comfort movies… one of my all time favorite comfort movies is Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and pretty much all versions from 1903 to 2010 (the 2016 one is alright). I also love many variations of Peter Pan! Bram Stokers Dracula and Sleepy Hallow are some of my childhood favorites… another comfort movie is the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. La Belle et la Bete 1946 has been one of my favorites lately too, it is so sparkly and beautiful. I’ve really been meaning to watch Coraline and A Cat in Paris again too.. lovely.

Everything is made from dreams
I'm rewatching Jean Cocteau lately so I'm sharing a vid I made ages ago.
Temptation source: La Belle et la Bete (1946) pairing: Belle/Beast song/artist: "Temptation" by Diana Krall length/size: 3:20 / 40MB / mp4
Summary: Temptation.... I can't resist.
download: right-click save ty to @ars-amatoria
A 2010 festivd treat for dualbunny!
youtube
original vid notes + lyrics under the cut
I don't have many notes about this particular vid except that I love the source so much. I've adored Diana Krall long before I started vidding but I can't even remember how I thought to pair her with the film. I actually had this vid idea the longest of the three vids I did for festivids--I was contemplating it back in November and had messed with enough of the timeline that I felt it came together in a very pleasing way. It's a much more relaxed POV than I'm used to doing for such limited source but I think it helped with the flow. There was so much excellent footage to choose from. Jean Cocteau is nothing short of marvelous. Truly.
YAY festivids and yay vid for dualbunny !!!
"Temptation" - Diana Krall
Rusted brandy in a diamond glass Everything is made from dreams Time is made from honey slow and sweet Only the fools know what it means Temptation, temptation, temptation I can't resist Well I know that she is made of smoke But I've lost my way He knows that I am broke But I must pay him Temptation, oh temptation, temptation, I can't resist Dutch pink and Italian blue He's there waiting for you My will has disappeared Now confusion is oh so clear Temptation, temptation, temptation I can't resist Temptation, for love, temptation, temptation I can't resist

i was tagged by @clandestinegardenias and @sunlaire in this ask game that @clandestinegardenias created!
What is one place that in your life that brings or has brought you joy? My home still brings me joy, but my bedroom that I had right before I moved to school. I had almost every inch of my walls covered in art or elevated bookshelves. It was so chaotic, but I really loved how busy it all was, and it was all art that i really adored.
What is one object/thing in your life that brings you joy? I have this giant squid that I sewed for myself a few years ago. It's approximately 8 feet long, with teal as the primary color and the inside of the tentacles in pink and white polka dots. His name is "Reginald the Progenitor," thus dubbed by my younger brother. I love him so much. It helps that it I made it, but I love that fuckin thing
What is one experience in your life that brings you simple joy? I've talked it before, but my favorite thing to do in the morning is brew a cup of tea and sit in the sun as it comes in through my living room windows. I feel like I'm a lizard sunning themselves to keep warm, but it's always really relaxing and always makes me really happy.
What is one relationship in your life that brings you simple joy? Tough to choose; I tend not to keep people around that I don't like having around, honestly, and I genuinely love my friends and family. For this, I think I'll go with my youngest brother. He and I get along really well, and we spent a lot of time bonding over art, music, and video games. He's always really quick to talk to me about video game music, since he likes it and it's one of my research interests, so we're able to have really good conversations about it. And he tolerates my ineptitude at video games, lmao
What is one thing you can do today that will bring you simple joy? I already did it, but I watched the version of Jean Cocteau's La Belle et la Bete with the Philip Glass opera audio overlaid on the 1946 film footage with a friend this evening. It was something I was looking forward to doing with him for a few weeks now, and we finally got around to it now that our final papers are all finished. And it did bring me joy! (also I went to the art museum for two hours this afternoon and it was Really Cool, because I hadn't been to the local one since I moved out here)
tagging @imwritesometimes and @sweetenby, but only if you guys really want to. <3
