Beth and I did the 42 mile Lake Loop of the Chelan Rotary Ride. They probably had a few hundred riders doing the variety of distances. The views were spectacular and the route even included a pontoon boat ‘ferry’ courtesy of Rotary members. Beth rode her new e-assist mountain bike which meant I could go as fast as I wanted; unfortunately her battery ran out of juice with a few miles to go. Fortunately she is a good biker and the electronic shifting still worked.

The Long March
In the last month I have been near and on Mount Adams in southwest Washington and more recently in Stehekin at the far end of Lake Chelan also in Washington. Both places are spots where thru hikers pass through on the way to Canada. Both places are stunning but quite different.
Near Mount Adams there are few amenities but there is a small general store and they know that hikers and probably more climbers come through seeking certain pleasures in the form of an ice cream bar, cold beverage, or whatever. Trout Lake does not measure up to 'Trail Town' status when compared to places like Julian or even Kennedy Meadows but it does offer the hiking crowd worthwhile culinary distractions.
Tumblr media
Stehekin is another story. Stehekin welcomes PCT hikers in near legendary fashion. The outpost sits on the northeast shore of Lake Chelan. The largest lake in the state boasting cold clear water and a fifty mile length. Hikers make their way north from Stevens Pass and arrive in Stehekin for possibly their last re-supply before reaching Canada. They also come there to go to the near famous and very much talked about bakery. The bakery is in its second act. The original and legendary 'Honey Bear Bakery' left Stehekin many years ago to be replaced by a larger version offering sandwiches, ice cream, and other delectables in addition to baked treasures.

The eighty-five permanent residents swell to over a hundred in the summer season. Add in boatloads of tourists who come up lake for the day or a few days and the place appears to be bigger and busier than expected. When I was visiting the leading elements of thru hikers were already there. One told me he had left Campo in early April. He was moving along quickly with friends reaching Canada by the time anyone reads this post.
Certainly the desire to beat the fire season was a strong motivation. The people I met clearly had made it through before the McKinney fire along the California/Oregon border as well as other smaller fires further north. Current reports indicate hikers are either 'leap frogging' or doing a lateral and hiking the Oregon Coast Trail as they move north.
Despite the wet spring and late snow in Washington the fire danger is posted as 'extreme'. Hopefully the rest of the crowd will get through over the course of the next six weeks without being hampered by fires. Many are motivated to get to Trail Days held at Bridge of the Gods, August 19-20. As the many hikers drift north we will follow them and celebrate their eventual successes.
