My drawing of Lee Miller, War photographer, Journalist, Fashion model and eventually a chef. She broke every mould in a remarkable career that perhaps culminated in her washing in Hitler’s bath in Munich during the last days of World War 2. Desire Me Curated with ‘Vitra Design Museum’, ‘Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design 1924 - Today’ will explore design from the birth of ‘Surrealism’ in 1924 to the current day - spanning classic ‘Surrealist' works of art and design as well as contemporary ‘Surrealist’ responses. The exhibition will uncover how one of the 20th century’s most influential movements came to impact design through questioning the conventional and its commitment to exploring the unconscious mind and mystical. ‘Objects of Desire’ will bring together the best in ‘Surrealist’ design - from furniture, interior design, fashion, photography and world-renowned artworks from ‘Surrealist’ pioneers - Salvador Dalí, Dora Maar, Man Ray, Leonora Carrington and Lee Miller through to contemporary artists and designers - Björk, ’Schiaparelli’ and ‘Dior’. The result is an exhibition filled with playful and curious objects that uncover the rich history of ‘Surrealism’ and its fascinating influence on design. ‘Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design 1924 - Today’, October 14, 2022 - February 19, 2023, ‘Design Museum’, London, W8 6AG. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #love #surrealism #surrealist #interiordesign #graphicdesign #furniture #leemiller #manray #sarahlucas #meretoppenheim #salvadordali #reneemagritte #marcelduchamp #leonoracarrington #london #designmuseum #objectsofdesire (at Design Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjm8-KNo6cK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lee Miller, Leonora Carrington, Ady Fidelin and Nusch Eluard.
(1937 - Lee Miller Archive)
Tumblr media
Lee Miller (2) Elizabeth "Lee" Miller, Lady Penrose (April 23, 1907 – July 21, 1977), was an American photographer and photojournalist. She was a fashion model in New York City in the 1920s before going to Paris, where she became a fashion and fine art photographer. During the Second World War, she was a war correspondent for Vogue, covering events such as the London Blitz, the liberation of Paris, and the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau.
Tumblr media
Leonora Carrington (3)
Mary Leonora Carrington OBE (6 April 1917 – 25 May 2011) was a British-born Mexican artist, surrealist painter, and novelist. She lived most of her adult life in Mexico City and was one of the last surviving participants in the Surrealist movement of the 1930s. Carrington was also a founding member of the women's liberation movement in Mexico during the 1970s.

Ady Fidelin (4)
Adrienne 'Ady' Fidelin was born and raised in Guadeloupe, but emigrated to France with her family in 1928 after a hurricane devastated the archipelago. In Paris, at the height of the jazz age, she became a dancer, frequenting nightclubs such as the Bal Blomet, and in 1935 met Man Ray. She’d go on to appear in more than 400 photographs, paintings, drawings and etchings. Man Ray, like Lee Miller, did a lot of fashion work at this time, with his photographs regularly appearing in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

Nusch Eluard (5)
Nusch Éluard (born Maria Benz; 21 June 1906 – 28 November 1946) was a French performer, model and surrealist artist.
Born Maria Benz in Mulhouse (then part of the German Empire)
Nusch arrived in France as a stage performer, variously described as a small-time actress, a traveling acrobat, and a "hypnotist's stooge". Produced surrealist photomontage and other work, and is the subject of "Facile," a collection of Éluard's poetry published as a photogravure book, illustrated with Man Ray's nude photographs of her.

When she was seven years old, Lee was raped while staying with a family friend in Brooklyn and was infected with gonorrhea. In her childhood, Miller experienced issues in her formal education, being expelled from almost every school she attended whilst living in the Poughkeepsie area. In 1925, at the age of eighteen, Miller moved to Paris where she studied lighting, costume and design at the Ladislas Medgyes’ School of Stagecraft. She returned to New York in 1926 and joined an experimental drama program at Vassar College, taught by Hallie Flanagan, a pioneer of “experimental theatre”. Soon after, Miller left home at the age of 19 to enroll in the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan to study life drawing and painting. -Wikepedia ---- “I keep saying to everyone, ‘I didn’t waste a minute all my life’ – but I know myself, now, that if I had it over again, I’d be even more free with my ideas, with my body and my affection.” “It seems to me that women have a bigger chance at success in photography than men… Women are quicker and more adaptable than men. And I think they have an intuition that helps them understand personalities more quickly than men.” “I’m no good with my hands, though I am good with a screwdriver – taking a camera apart. But sewing on a button? I could scream.” “The personality of the photographer, his approach, is really more important than his technical genius.” “Being a great photojournalist is a matter of getting out on a damn limb and sawing it off behind you.” (at Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CW4z897sDRS/?utm_medium=tumblr

In 1938 Lee Miller travelled round the Balkans with British surrealist artist Roland Penrose. His photos and poems from the trip were made into a book (The Road is Wider than Long) and also form one of the exhibits at Farleys House, the home they set up together after WW2 which their son later made into a museum for their lives, work, and art collection. I'd long wanted to visit so it was great to find it was only a day trip from my new UK home. The museum/gallery is a strange mixture, but to me gave a representative snapshot of Lee's strangely mixed life and the surrealism which ran through it. To quote from Roland's 1938 book (dedicated to Lee): "The road is wider than long trees are thicker than tall wells reach to the clouds their blood is more solid than their bones" 🌳 It was a post by @planetmanny that encouraged me to finally make the trip and it is well worth the visit. The house is still run by the family and one of their great granddaughters was my tour guide. If you're not nearby then don't come without PRE BOOKING A HOUSE TOUR; I'd have been a little dissapointed I think to have travelled only to see the garden and gallery, but the tour made me very glad I'd made the trip. . . . . . . . #farleyshouseandgallery #farleyshouse #leemiller #leemillerarchives #leemillerphotography #leemillerphotographer #rolandpenrose #rolandpenrosecollection #manray #picasso #jeancocteau #thebloodofapoet #surrealism #surrealist #surrealart #surrealistart #surrealistartist #surrealistartists #dachau #hitler #voguemagazine @farleyshg #theroadiswiderthanlong (at Farleys House & Gallery, Home of Surrealists Lee Miller & Roland Penrose) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-J5Dpsbh8/?utm_medium=tumblr
