i’m finding it so difficult to detach myself and cut off a person who i am very much still in love with but who has repeatedly hurt me and strung me along only to dump me when reality hits and they remember im a real person with flaws and emotions and not some fantasy they created

i’m about to be really mean but this person doesn’t give nearly as much of a fuck about you as you do about them. you’re probably romanticizing them, playing a highlight reel of their best qualities in your head, rewinding all the good moments you might’ve shared w them. meanwhile they weighed your best qualities, replayed your best memories in their head, considered the value you add to their life as a person—and still decided it wasn’t enough and chose to dump you.

this was my biggest blind spot when i was going through things like friendship fallouts or my breakup w my ex. i was like but how can i live without them now!! as if they didn’t choose to severe our connection w their whole chest. you might be like “but they might’ve really struggled to do it” and it’s like okay, but they still chose to go through w it. their reasoning to them was more important than having you in their life, regardless of the tremendous energy and emotion that got expended into the decision. that or it took no energy at all, which just means that they were playacting their care for you and never actually gave a fuck. far more sinister.

from the way you described them, they’re still not mature enough to realize that love is hard work. that it’s not just convenience and feeling good all the time. why do you want someone like that in your life? someone who always goes into fight or flight whenever push comes to shove? not sustainable whatsoever. they literally did you a favor by walking out of your life. they saved you more wasted time and effort and pain that would have no doubt stemmed from their avoidant, erratic, wishywashy nature.

you have to get into the habit of not wanting people who don’t want you, whatever the context. i feel like a bit of narcissism is healthy when it comes to this bc i legit don’t care what a person’s attributes are; to me that’s such a fundamental difference in thinking between us bc i’m the dopest bitch i know. and they still don’t want me in their life ?? like ik what i bring to the table and that would be such flawed, ludicrous logic to me. it just gives me the ick and makes me lose interest in them as a person instantly, even if they were great listeners or had a good music taste or were funny or played the guitar really well. doesn’t matter, they still were shortsighted enough to think a life without me in it was a good choice. romantic and platonic breakups do bother me, simply bc i’m very honest w my love and i genuinely value the people in my life, but these days i’m not hung up on anyone for more than a day bc i will never want someone who doesn’t want me. never never never. i don’t have the compulsive urge to make people who don’t like me like me. i have such a don’t let the door slam you on your way out mentality about it. i’ll simply find someone who’s funny and a good listener and plays the guitar well and still cares enough about me not to dump me when it gets hard. doesn’t have to be one or the other.

also do yourself a favor and don’t fill the gaps for them or try to guess what’s going on in their minds. they dumped you? okay they don’t care about you. they cut you off? okay they don’t care about you. they’re not trying to send you subliminal messages on their ig story about how much they still care—and on the very small chance that they are, you shouldn’t want that. you shouldn’t want someone whose peak effort when it comes to you is posting a sad quote about how lonely they are without actually putting the effort into approaching you, apologizing, owning up to their mistakes. until they actually act on it, their feelings pretty much irrelevant & it’s best to assume they just don’t give a fuck. you don’t want someone in your life who always prioritizes their comfort over maintaining their connection w you. ruthlessly remind yourself of that and move on to someone who doesn’t just give you breadcrumbs, if anything at all.

I’ve started watching The Artful Dodger and loving it, it’s far better than Bridgerton at actually capturing the essence of a romance novel (my first thought upon seeing Jack and Belle interact was that it could’ve been ripped straight from a romance novel). Do you have any recs for tv shows or movies that have the vibes of a romance novel?

Ooh yes!

Oldie but a goodie and if anyone hasn't seen it they should (and really, the whole trilogy--the second movie gets a bad rap, but I personally so enjoy it, and I love the third movie for a lot of reasons but the "REIGNITE. OUR. LOVE." sequence is absolutely one of them, the "we are gonna FUCK THIS SHIT OUT" vibes are sooo romance novel for me). Bridget Jones's Diary. Mark Darcy is just an amazing hero. Bridget is a legend. Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver is PEAK Hugh Grant, and his introduction in that film is one of the greatest character intros I have ever. Seen in cinema. I see some people knock on it because of things that have aged--Bridget worrying over her weight because it's the early 2000s and super skinny was the trend, the workplace harassment. I don't give a fuck. If you haven't seen Bridget Jones's Diary, you are doing yourself a disservice.

(It is based on a book, but that book is not a romance novel. The movies are.)

Ummm speaking of Hugh Grant, Music & Lyrics is an underrated BANGER and absolutely fucking reads as a romance novel. A washed up has-been pop star begins a creative partnership with the messy neurotic woman who waters his plants? He does a flop attempt at defending her honor to do the guy who did her wrong. There's a grand gesture/grovel moment ffs. It's GREAT. The music is AMAZING. POP! Goes My Heart!

This one is borderline because it is more of a girls trip comedy, but the romance is truly centered so well and is a swoony romance and it features peak Richard Madden and it is again, so underrated. Netflix's Ibiza, dude. Buttoned up marketing girl goes on a business trip to Spain, her two best friends (who are both much wilder than her) accompany her and they go to the club one night and see DJ Richard Madden (LEOOOOO WESSSSST) and he and the main girl have this amazing meet cute that involves someone drawing a dick on her face in glow in the dark marker and him coming to the rescue, but then he has to go to a gig in Ibiza and she and her friends decide to track him down because some people are destined to go to the moon, but her destiny is to FUCK. THAT. DJ. But Harper and Leo's connection is more like love at first sight than pure horniness? I just miss movies that like, unabashedly capture zany happiness and the flutters of first love (and the sex scene is so good???). This movie is amazing and I adore it.

Bros. Look dude. I know Billy Eichner fucked up the marketing for this one. I know he's annoying as hell. Bros is objectively a romance novel movie lol. It's not as inclusive as it could/should be, I will agree with that always--but the romance arc is so good, and it is legit funny, and it has a FAILED GROVEL which we all know is one of my favorite things. And I do think it has a deeply true heart and soul and is really amazing.

Brown Sugar. PEAK Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan. It's a slow burn friends to lovers movie in which there is sooooo much sexual tension and so much angst and so much follow the fuck through. Also, Taye Diggs has one of the most magnificent line deliveries of all time with "riCHARD LAWson".

Imagine Me and You. The sapphic romcom we deserve. A bride falls in love at first sight with hot florist Lena Headey while walking down the aisle to marry her groom, as you do. What follows is a woman desperately trying not to cheat on her husband while experiencing extreme sexual tension with Lena Headey. Surprisingly soft and super romantic.

Lady Chatterley's Lover (2022). Required viewing for historical romance novel fans. Obviously based on a book, but again, that book is not a romance lol. The movie is. And it's one of the hottest movies in recent memory. Jack and Emma did the WORK. The kiss right before he goes down on her is maybe my favorite movie kiss of all time.

Obviously. Pride and Prejudice (2005). I shouldn't have to include this, but to be fucking clear lol. I will always maintain that while P&P (the novel) is a predecessor and a shaper of romance novels, it is not a romance novel. It is a contemporary novel with a lot of social commentary and a good love story. This movie? Makes it a full, sweeping romance with some of the best tension ever committed to screen.

Faraway. Omg, an amazing slept-on movie that is a rare romcom featuring a middle-aged woman! Basically, right when her mom dies she finds out her husband is having at min an emotional affair with his younger employee, and she also discovers her mom had a secret property on a Croatian island. She goes there, and is immediately courted by this younger real estate developer guy, but why is she constantly butting heads with the gruff guy who's been living in her mom's house????

Far and Away. Hate to recommend a Tom Cruise film, BUT it is is very romance novel, and it does star Nicole Kidman as well, and I hate to say it but those two did have bomb chemistry when they were married. The Irish accents are rough, but the plot is delightful because he's a poor guy who ends up getting roped into her scheme to leave for America (after his harebrained revenge scheme against her dad fails lol) and they live in a boarding house together pretending to be brother and sister... But like, everyone can tell they aren't because of their extremely obvious sexual tension lol.

When Harry Met Sally. Cliche, but it is a classic every romance lover should see. I'm not a big Billy Crystal fan, but his chemistry with Meg Ryan is MAGIC in this, and you really do get the sense of two people slooowly falling in love without even realizing it until suddenly they do all at once.

One of the many, many things I adore about Alhaitham is how when they brought him into the Sumeru Archon quests he is, for all intents and purpose, a genius, but when they brought him into the playable character roster and brought his lore along, he is so undeniably Just A Dude(tm). In the most positive and affectionate way possible, he just such an ordinary, normal, mundane guy, to the point that I find it hard to believe he's a fantasy video game character. He gets up earlier than he wants to for work and drinks coffee in the morning, then he goes off to his 9-5 and works while listening to music on his headphones, and leaves on time so he can go home and rest, plus when he has free time he just wants to nap. The main storyline made Alhaitham seem so mysterious and powerful but it turns out he's also PEAK relatable. Legit never would have looked at this guy when we met him in Port Ormos and thought "oh yeah he's a coffee drinker and he keeps an iPod in his pocket at all times"

Thinking about heather x eddie bc I’m nothing if not a champion of rare pairs in this comm

But just the “god he’s so fucking LAME and CRINGE and EMBARRASSING I need him CARNALLY” energy is so intense. I cannot believe you like this pansy ass gay apologetics shit what are you catholic??” And he’s both LIVID ON SO MANY LEVELS but also WILDLY AROUSED. There’s just something about a hot popular chick confidently having the most vile takes on his cringe exclusionary nerd shit that gets him hard. He’s horrified by this fact but also knows she wants him bad anyway so like really it’s just a matter of self control and can his self-esteem/pride take it.

All of his friends hate her and he’s like “yeah 😍 me too 😍”

She gets roped into going to/preforming in Some Town Event oblivious to the fact he is too and that’s when she gets arc of the covenant’d with his guitar playing. Mind snaps. Will power gone. He’s the shittiest dude she’s ever met she doesn’t like him AT ALL but sadly he’s also the Perfect Man and she needs him IMMEDIATELY. Legit jumps him the SECOND she can.

The kinda ppl who’ll continue an argument during sex.

Eddie loving every second of little miss rich and popular being soooo down bad for him. Loving having this level of control over someone who’s usually so “out of his league”. Loving how he can turn her brain off and make her shut up like it’s a magic trick.

I am so so so sorry you feel this way. I feel sickened too and I know it's a trillion times worse for those in communities far more affected, but I'm still quite upset about it as well. I can't stop thinking about that one tiktok that said "Taylor Swift is dating a racist, we finally have a legit reason to hate on her" with over 200k likes and I'm just like... She's at an all time peak in her career and she's going to let herself be associated so publicly and intimately with someone who's said and done so many things she's publicly spoken out against? I keep trying to rationalize it in my head because that's just how my mind works and I just can't believe this is where we are right now. I saw someone on twitter today brag that they don't care who Taylor dates and are a better fan because so and it made me so upset because of course you, who clearly aren't targeted by any of his words, wouldn't find anything he's done offensive and can turn a blind eye to the fact that she's dating him. I can't imagine what it's like to be directly hurt from these things I saw someone on twitter say that they don't feel safe going to a concert where he could possibly show up because of the comments he's made about black women and that rattled me so much and made me so upset to think about but it's totally valid! I think that people who are saying that they don't care who Taylor dates and are trying to seem superior with that mindset actually just don't care about other people, not even their fellow swifties and that makes me tremendously sad as well. oh also speaking of music I was listening to Evanescence the other night and it really struck me how weird that era of goth-pop-alt music was? Like that post-9/11 period when goth and emo and pop punk and alternative were SUPER in and relatively mainstream but because the music world was really hostile and walking on eggshells because nobody wanted to get Dixie Chicksed, the stuff that was mainstream and accessible tended to be uhhhhh kind of about nothing? like SO MUCH alt music I remember getting a lot of play in the 2000s is just about mid-tier breakups. even the numetal and pop punk stuff which is like. genres made to be angry at The System in.

and it's not that those songs were BAD, obviously. like musically they're really thought through and a lot of those artists really put in the work. but ok like Evanescence. the music is sweeping. Amy Lee is putting her WHOLE PUSSY into selling the heartbreak and angst of the songs. which, of their big hits, are almost all in their entirety, 'we used to have a kind of codependent relationship and now we've broken up.'

I'm not sure this theory holds up cause like. Popular alternative music was certainly not fully apolitical. System of a Down peaked at that time. American Idiot, obviously. And bands like Disturbed and Slipknot certainly managed to find some time to talk about political repression and social alienation in between writing 1200000 songs about beating your girlfriend up and how it's Not Fair She Won't Date Me Even Though I'm Right Here, respectively.

(and to be clear. this is all music that I like. although Corey Taylor occasionally gets too whiny for me tbh)

and I legit don't know to what degree this was actually a thing, to what degree it's basically always the case that the most popular Angsty Alt Music For Teens has more to do with breakups than political unrest, and to what degree I personally was just listening to the wrong music in 2005.

(but I'm not really so much thinking of the music I liked at the time but the music that was like, what you reached for when you were naming Alternative Music - your Evanescence, HIM, Slipknot, MCR, FOB, Panic!, Green Day, Blink 182, Disturbed, Linkin Park, all the stuff a kid in eyeliner listened to. some of which I did not, I never got the hang of HIM and I think I maybe missed a trick not getting into Linkin Park bc I understand they made some good stuff but I hated Numb so much at the time, I couldn't cope with them. even though look on lyrics alone it's not a bad song. it works. whatever.)

Do you think you can help me out? I don't understand why everyone loves Ibuki so much. I mean, I don't want to hate her, but the one thing I don't like is her music. It's been bothering me ever since I learned that she's a fan favorite, I want to know if anyone doesn't like Ibuki because of her music. I get that her popularity has to do with her jokes and fashion, but some of it feels like dark humor to me. You can read my blog for more info if you want (some of it doesn't make sense though).

I don't think anyone likes Ibuki's music aside from Hiyoko, lol. (Unless, of course, you're talking about that amazing fan recording of what "I Squeezed Out the Baby But I Have No Idea Who the Father Is" could sound like, which I would say is an absolute jam.) Just look at everyone else's reaction to it in-game! So you're definitely not alone in such an opinion; I'd be stunned to learn if ANY fans legitimately liked her in-game/in-anime music, actually. I always thought the whole POINT was that it's supposed to sound like a cacophony of garbage. But having some crap musical preferences isn't usually enough to hate OR love somebody, y'know? Whether they're real OR fictional.

(But please, y'all: If any of you legitimately love — or, like @dangan-kagura, totally hate — Ibuki for her.... eccentric musical style, I'd love to hear about that. I want to know you exist!)

But ultimately, I think Ibuki is beloved by the DR fanbase because of three main reasons:

A) Yes, she's funny and cartoonishly positive and speaks in the third person, but she also runs deeper/smarter than she usually acts. We do tend to really dig characters with layers to them that run deeper than our first superficial impression.

B) We also love someone who is relentlessly individualistic and shows no signs of caring what other people think of her. There's an admirable quality to her, particularly in how she's pursuing her music when we meet her.

C) A character with queer undertones (overtones?) is always a character that fandoms will gravitate towards.

Let me go a little more in-depth on those points.

Regarding point A: Obviously, Ibuki acts like a goofball a lot of the time, which can be endearing. But she also surprisingly pulls her weight in the class trials by catching others in lies, pressing people for answers, reporting on exactly what sounds/voices came from where at what points during Chapter 1's murder, and so on. She can be quite insightful — remember that in DR3's Despair Arc, she's the only person in Class 77-B who points out that there's something between Fuyuhiko and Peko — that they're clearly closer than they pretend to be. All of the above speaks to how lowkey observant she is, which supports how she can drop some legit wisdom, such as her mini-speech about "finding oneself" during her final FTE in Island Mode.

Regarding point B: As we gradually learn her background in-game from various conversations and FTEs, we find that she once wrote and co-performed a song with her Light Music Club that became a top-charting single. That fact combined with her incredible guitar skills helped her get scouted by Hope's Peak as the "Ultimate Musician." Even so, she ditched her club and quit pop music so she could make the heavier, harder music SHE wanted to make. And... it's not exactly being well-received, but she doesn't seem to give a damn. She left behind the easy route to praise and loads of cash so she could maintain her artistic integrity and do what she's passionate about and loves doing. That's easy to admire.

Regarding point C: At the end of Island Mode, if the player/Hajime suggests they could now be "lovers," she rejects that notion with a strong "DENIED!" Plus she talks about her heart pounding hard when she sees the other girls in their swimsuits. And there's her request for Mahiru to take picutres of Mikan in compromising positions when poor Tsumiki falls in Chapter 1. And, y'know... the infamous "Welcome to the world of girl love!" quote. All this together has made her be popularly believed to be gay or at least bi/pansexual, and characters with those kinds of hints just always get a lot of love from fans. Geeks do love their slash.

I hope this helped you understand why people are fond of her — including myself. I'd probably put her anywhere from tier 1 to tier 3 of my favorite characters, depending on the day. She's not a lock for the top level by any means, but I'm still a fan and enjoy her presence.

This is honestly EVERYTHING. One of the most well done and raw interviews I've seen. Probably because it was just an honest conversation between the two. The respect shared, the vulnerabilities shown, the sneak peaks for the new BTS song coming on Pharrell's new album soon and RM3 coming at the end of November (probably, rumored). I honest to God, teared up reading this interview. They cover some heavy topics so well. I just.... want to sit with it. When I say I love RM, he has made such a home in my heart in such an impactful and important way. Unforgettable and intense. I'm in AWE of him constantly. The Test

So.... Alone Together was one of the best episodes of the show so far. So to have one of the best episodes immediately be followed up by another PERFECT episode is...whew. I just got hit with peak twice.

Pearl experiences 'Gamer Rage™'.

Y'all.....how the FUCK is Garnet SO FUCKING COOL?! I swear she must be like a sponge for coolness & naturally absorbs all the coolness in the universe because that's the only logical explanation for how she's THIS FUCKING COOL ALL THE TIME.

Okay Pearl was just being Pearl here & as you all know, yes, she's peak. As always.

She was just trying so hard to make him feel better & it just went so bad. She's a fucking wet cat. I love her. In fact, all 3 gems were just at their best this episode. Amethyst was fucking hilarious & Garnet was somehow even cooler than she was before. No seriously I swear she actively gets cooler with each episode it's weird. How is she getting even cooler. HOW CAN SHE BE THIS COOL SHE'S SO FUCKING COOL.

I love how this calls back to an earlier episode with the sea spire. Like holy shit: So them having Steven 'fail' all the way back in that episode was done so they could set up another episode later on? THAT'S SO FUCKING DOPE HOLY SHIT. THE WRITERS ATE THAT SHIT.

Amethyst is apparently a big fan of that marble madness game on NES. Wow. Amethyst is such a 'Gamer™'.

The first thing I thought of when I saw Pearl's music puzzle dungeon should probably have been like, Dance Dance Revolution or something. But no, the thing that came to my silly mind instantly was that one part of Battle For Bikini Bottom in the mermalair stage. You know the one.

Even her dungeon is fucking cool.

Okay ngl I saw this plot twist coming the second they said they designed the dungeons but I didn't see the scene of them talking about feeling like failures coming. Seeing even Garnet, fucking GARNET, even her being so unsure? That legit fucking hits so much. And then Steven being there to give THEM the comfort? This ending made me tear up. Like actually got my eyes watering. This episode & the last one have easily been the best episodes so far. Holy shit.

Three ways I can think of!

Reading, reading, reading! I have legit copy-pasted smutfics I really liked into a Google doc to pick apart why. I have done this with one of yours ajfkhdjk.

Getting betas and concrit from a range of people on the all-important question: Is This Hot?

Reading articles with tips on smut writing, articles on sexual health websites, sexual health forums (esp for firsthand testimonials on the gay sex), and sometimes even dry-ass (lol) articles on anatomy.

I find the juxtaposition of humour and smut to be an absolute sensory delight. The whole Elwing/Maglor fucking scene from Everlasting Darkness is so hot AND funny to me. Uhh this was hard to cut down, I am sorry it's long.

When the two got there, aponi had to immediately get onto the stage, all of her friends were already reciting their lines.

Alastor sat next to Aponi's froend, Carolyn.

"Good luck trying to compete with us! Honey!" One performer stated before all of them struck a pose.

"You're right.... You're right!" Aponi began. "Your lives sounded terrible! And your songs... really helped to convey that!" She insulted.

The crowd laughed.

"I mean Catherine! Almost moving to a nunnery and then not? That almost could've been really hard for you!" She exclaimed.

The woman playing Catherine scowled, trying not to laugh.

"And Anne! Getting your head chopped off! Surely that means you'll win the competi- oh wait. Divorced beheaded died divorced beheaded- oooh... nevermind!" She walked over to another performer.

Alastor smirked.

The crowd laughed.
