My reactions to Evangelion episode 26: Take care of yourself

I had to go to the store after the last episode and I was a nervous wreck the whole time. I am a nervous wreck right now. My stomach is turning. I am so worried about what we're going to find out and what's going to happen.

We're focusing on the instrumentality of the heart belonging to the boy Shinji Ikari. Oh, god.

So is it going to be like a hive mind?

"If I run away, no one will talk to me again" "Don't abandon me!"

"If I pilot the Eva, I can exist as myself." Is the reason piloting the Eva was so painful at first because of how hard it is to look at oneself?

"I have nothing else."

The Eva changes and overcomes their personalities if they tie their identity too much to it. Like Asuka.

So, all this mind meld stuff is the instrumentality taking place, yes? They are all kind of slipping together into one consciousness?

Oh, Asuka with those hollow cheeks.

I can't believe this has been going on for two episodes lol. I can understand why they had to make a movie after this because I feel like I'm going to riot. I thought we were going to, like, return to the plot.

Oh, thank god.

But is this an alternate world? Since when is Asuka his childhood friend? Pen Pen is a clock?

Do they not have faces?

It's so weird to see them, especially Shinji, acting like such normal kids. But him and Asuka fighting is cute.

The art style changed from animation to sketchy stills. I guess the illusion is fading.

Ah, it was another possible world.

We're back at it. Oh, god. I was into it for the last episode when I thought it was leading up to something but at this point, I've given up and I feel like I'm having the same message hammered into my head over and over again.

Lol and then everybody stood up and clapped.

I am laughing so hard. What the fuck was that?

In Conclusion

How is that even a conclusion??? I... I need to know that something is actually going to happen in the movie.

Okay, I skimmed the Wikipedia page. That sounds more like it. I'm planning to watch it on Sunday and I guess I saw a couple spoilers? But I read it in that not paying attention way so I'm hoping they will spill from my head by then. And it was just stuff that I was either already anticipating or was not surprised by anyway, so I think it will be fine. And I think I saw Shinji survives? So I'm even more fine if that's the case.

I'm not supposed to like this ending, right? Like, I'm allowed to think this was nonsense?

I mean, I suppose it was meant to be the instrumentality proceeding as planned and succeeding but, like... It just feels like the author stood up, threw down their pen, and declared, "I am fucking tired of crafting a story with plot points and tension and character development! I want to talk about the weird things I think about in the shower!" and then proceeded to do that for an hour.

I had myself worked up into a tizzy over nothing.

I'm sorry if I was supposed to enjoy this, but, I am now super excited for the movie.

I'm sorry. Episodes 1 - 24 were great, though. 10/10 would watch again (and probably will)

Unfortunately, my grandma is the only person irl who shares my love of the Beatles, so we had a movie night and watched a Hard Day's Night and it was a blast! Here are some of my thoughts and comments on the film and some of my favorite parts/quotes (sorry if it's out of order):

• the opening is obviously iconic, I love how George and Ringo fall and almost get fucking trampled and we aren't even a minute in yet

• also the way John just laughs at them took me tf out, I love it

• "he's very c l e a n"

• Paul's grandfather was fucking helarious

• my grandma was singing all of the songs so loudly that I couldn't hear any of them 💀

• "Tell me, how did you find America?" "Turn left to Greenland"

• "What do you call that hairstyle you are wearing?" "Arthur"

• the entire part where George is mistaken for a teen model had me cackling

• "do not breathe on me, Adrian"

• "grotty" should be used more

• I love how the manager was basically just like a babysitter trying to take care of four out of control children

• I did not appreciate the Ringo's nose slander, his nose is beautiful

• Ringo's wack ass dancing was so amusing to me

• "Do I snore, John?" "Yeah, you're a window-rattler, son."

• John randomly oinking like a pig caught me off guard tbh

• Ringo being protective of his drums is literally me with my guitar

• "Put yer tongue away, it looks disgustin hangin out, all pink and naked."

• all of the songs were bangers, ofc

• all of the John in the bath scenes give me pure serotonin, I love his goofy ass

• me and my grandma sang a duet of And I Love Her when it came on and it was so fun and sweet

• I'm so sad that they didn't add "You Can't Do That" into the film since it's my favorite song on the album

• since I watched Nowhere Boy directly before this and almost cried, this line tore out my heart

• the scenes of Ringo with the kid were so random but also so wholesome

• the whole mistaken identity scene with John and the lady had me laughing and blushing, oh my God

• since my grandma is a George girl, she was simping hardcore during his song, it was so cute

• she literally yelled "I've got dibs on George!"

• my grandma also doesn't laugh when she thinks stuff is funny for some reason, so it was basically just me cackling in the otherwise silent living room the whole time

• she kept looking over to me throughout the film and finally said, "man, you're all over John the whole movie, huh?" 😭

• please, she can't talk, this women literally ran up to the TV and touched George's face 🤣

• okay, I know I'm going to sound delusional as fuck but just hear me out-

During this exact particular scene:

I swear to God, for a second I thought I could smell John through the screen. So, the whole room just smelled like nothing basically, but when the camera was on John straight ahead in this scene after he's talking to the lady in the hall, my senses just exploded basically. I suddenly smelled strong tobacco and cigarette smoke, along with a clean sweet smell and citrus. It's like when someone walks by you with a lot of cologne or something and you are hit by it? It was like that with the sudden angle change when it went to this shot of John. It was the weirdest shit. I know it sounds dramatic and like I'm making it up, but weirdly enough it's happened to both me and another family member a few times with other movies, but idk why lol. Then when John went up the stairs it faded away and didn't come back. No one smokes in their house either and there was no smell like any of that in the room before, so it was really weird but also oddly comforting. Anyways, I'm probably just going insaine.

I just realized the absolute wait of El saying "maybe he's right" when Mike told her about Hopper.

That was a reveal. And it meant nothing to her. There is even a romantic trope of the situation they were in and they refused to do it. They could have drawn it out and had El find out at the end (although that would have antagonized Hopper) and that be the big romantic moment, but instead, she finds out in episode 4.

In season 3 episode 2, El breaks up with Mike because he avoided her then lied about it and she didn't know why. In season 3 episode 4, he tells her that the reason was because he didn't want Hopper to break them up...

And she didn't care. She didn't care! Like AT. ALL. Barely even acknowledged it. Then she said that since hanging out with Max, she had realized that him doing that was not the only issue in their relationship so solving that one doesn't solve anything and she was happy to stay single.

Uh.....DAMN. THEY LITERALLY DID THAT. If he had said what he said before she went to Max and that had somehow been the order, I think she would have taken him back. But instead, and instead of having a single conflict and solution, they used that conflict as an OPPORTUNITY, a starting point to jump off of for the next one. They wrapped it all up with that conversation in the first half of the season.

From there, the conflict was Mike telling El he loved her, something that was not the source of their breakup and therefore should not solve it, and El didn't really have a conflict pertaining to him as she was not seeking to initiate anything. Once he genuinely apologized, they got on good terms again and she was more willing to communicate with him about trusting her and allowing her to be independent now that Max had helped her realize that she wanted that.

But at the end of the day....they could have done a romantic angsty plot and didn't. Because that isn't what their arcs are. Instead, they said "yes, the breakup was for made up reasons, but once she was fully informed, she chose to stay broken up because although the original reason for the breakup was a miscommunication, she noticed that she had been happier since breaking up and that was more important."

I will never shut up about how season 3 grew on me as their friendship season and how, in connection to that, they made up about halfway through the season during the m&m scene (which was very downplayed ftr) and remained broken up for 3-4 more episodes.

Mike was trying to tell her he loved her but that was not the source of the breakup so it should not have solved it. Even if it had, he didn't anyways. And if it would have solved it, then why didn't she get back together with him immediately upon knowing? Or at least after a couple of days of him not being able to say it. You might all die again, especially you, there is at least some urgency to the situation. Why not make sure to get back together right before the big battle like Lum@x did in season 4?

And I will always remember the analysis about how her romantic moments with Mike coincide with her grieving Hopper. Here are the facts:

After finding out that the reason for their breakup was a miscommunication, she chose to stay broken up for other reasons she had since come to realize.

After making up and getting to a good place platonically, she did not initiate getting back together and neither did he.

After hearing him say he loved her, she did not initiate getting back together.

When he didn't work up the courage on his own, she did not bring it up to him in order to get back together

After her father died and she was moving across the country, big, jarring changes happening in her life, she initiated getting back together.

She had many an opportunity she did not take, initially directly denying the chance, but even after that seeming content with either getting back together if he initiated it or not if he didn't. That was always my interpretation from my first watch, that formulaically they probably would but she seemed content with either.

When introduced the option, she broke up with him. When given the full information and direct opportunity, she chose not to get back together with him for other, more credible reasons. After making up, when given indirect opportunity, she did not initiate getting back together with him.

tldr: They could have made a thing of it. They could have drawn it out. They could have made it big and romantic - like I thought they were going to when they introduced it in episode 1 as if it were the primary conflict. But they didn't. They said "yes, she broke up with him for faulty reasons, but that was just so she could realize how much she loves being single."

Okay so this entire episode just made me feel like....uncomfortable? Like the entire time I just kept feeling so off. Like my brain was going "okay this is way too weird, why do I feel like there's gonna be some horrifying plot twist?"

Then it fucking happened & I felt like a psychic. Like holy shit it wasn't just me, this episode was purposely uncomfortable on purpose & idk how the fuck they did that but WOW the entire episode made me feel so uneasy & it was legit for a reason.

Also ngl Amethyst....kinda just super fucked up to do that- Like I haven't LOVED Greg as a character so far (he's there but I mean him lying about his leg, good intentions or not, was a pretty shitty move & also he's just kinda not that great of a dad but I also understand that's literally the point so I'm not gonna just toss aside his character because I'm assuming he's supposed to get better as the show goes on. For now: I just kinda feel nothing strong towards him character wise), but oh my God this episode just made me feel so bad for the guy. Holy shit like this dude just misses his wife. Fuck. I'm surprised how much he kept his cool here. Like he didn't blow up at Amethyst or anything he was like super quick to forgive her despite the fact that he kinda would have been super justified in being upset for this. But I like that this was how it was done. No scene of them fighting or yelling, Amethyst just chooses to do something to make up for it without Greg having to lecture her. In that regard: it actually made her seem way more sincere. Like she had to make that choice via her own genuine remorse. I'm wording this badly I think but like I think that it made her seem like she really was trying to attone for it & that she really did regret what she did.

And honeslty after On The Run? With the knowledge that, knowing how severely fucked up Amethyst is mental health wise, yeah her lashing out at people like this? And saying/doing extremely shitty things because she's upset & she doesn't have the capacity to hold herself back & only realizes how badly she fucked up until its too late? Yeah as someone who has that kinda mental health shit as I said in my post about that episode?....yeah, that's pretty accurate tbh. In my experience that's something I can confirm does happen. So yeah it actually makes sense why she did something so extreme out of fucking nowhere.

I have said a lot of really regrettable shit to people that I'm friends with (Sometimes idk how I'm still friends with them after bc I still feel bad about it yet they seem to insist I'm forgiven) during times where I was really fucking upset. And it's only until RIGHT after it happens that I fully go "oh shit that was a really bad thing to say & I made the situation significantly worse" Yet just like irl, they forgive. *cries*

Really well done character focused episode. They did fucking stellar character writing here.

My reactions to Evangelion episode 11: the Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still

That Eren Jaeger-looking guy from NERV is even more Eren Jaeger-looking than I realized now that I see him in his casual wear.

The Magi were mentioned before but I didn't think about them too much, but I didn't realize the supercomputers were the city's government? Unless I'm misunderstanding. That seems... unwise.

Are they going to make out in the elevator again?

I guess not :(

Shinji is so nervous about talking to his dad.

God, Gendo is an asshole.

Wait the power just went out. They're trapped in the elevator together. Maybe there's still a chance!

They're taking life support away from parts of the compound for the sake of the supercomputers? What, they can't handle a little anarchy while they get things back up and running? I am suspicious.

Shinji is a detail-oriented boy. There's nothing wrong with that.

Asuka is starting to grow on me lol. She's so hot-headed.

In Conclusion

Shinji is very reliable. He isn't very innovative or much of a take charge type, but he is always there as backup.

I'm interested to know why Rei thinks she's not getting special treatment (unless I misheard that part).

I enjoyed getting to see a bit more of the team dynamic between the Children.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be impressed Gendo got the Evas prepared manually for the pilots. Someone (Was it Ritsuko or the other woman?) framed it like he had a lot of faith in the pilots and that's why he did it, but I kind of feel like he is the worst and I'm not willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think Kaji is probably working as a double agent and perhaps knows more than the rest of us do. He seems to be operating under other orders (or additional orders). I wonder what his goal is here?
