“His Music Will be His Lasting Legacy;” Raspberries Co-founder and Solo Artist Eric Carmen Dies at 74
Raspberries co-founder and solo artist Eric Carmen, the songwriter and voice of “Go all the Way,” “All By Myself” and other power-pop staples, has died.
“Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep over the weekend,” Carmen’s wife, Amy Carmen, said in a March 11 statement.
“It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy.”
Carmen was 74; no cause of death was given.
The Raspberries released a handful of early-1970s albums and hit big with “Go all the Way.”
The band toured with KISS and Carmen was “a true rocker at heart,” Paul Stanley said.
“His voice had elements of (Paul) McCartney and (Humble Pie’s) Steve Marriott,” Stanley said. “The Raspberries …(were) a killer band live and I loved their records.”
After the group dissolved, Carmen launched a solo career that yielded six LPs and such hits as “All by Myself,” “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again” and “Hungry Eyes.”
Former Wings drummer Laurence Juber and session bassist Leland Sklar were among the musicians who posted memories of recording with Carmen in the ’70s.
“Heartbroken over Eric Carmen,” Fernando Perdomo said in a statement. “A true master. A true inspiration. R.I.P.”

The Playing For Change video for Jackson Browne's "Doctor My Eyes". The video starts with Browne joined by bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russ Kunkel who both played on the original 1971 recording. _______________________ Doctor My Eyes Songwriter: Jackson Brown
Doctor, my eyes have seen the years And the slow parade of fears without crying Now I want to understand
I have done all that I could To see the evil and the good without hiding You must help me if you can
Doctor, my eyes Tell me what is wrong Was I unwise to leave them open for so long
'Cause I have wandered through this world And as each moment has unfurled I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams People go just where they will I never noticed them until I got this feeling That it's later than it seems
Doctor, my eyes Tell me what you see I hear their cries Just say if it's too late for me
Doctor, my eyes They cannot see the sky Is this the prize For having learned how not to cry

Many female singer-songwriters of the 90's made an impact that could have consequently derailed them. For instance, Lisa Loeb was one of those whose surprising success could've destroyed her, yet she did manage to make an intriguing career that – to be honest – could've been more adventurous. Still, she didn't let herself be defined by that, though I must admit she did challenge herself more often after the 90's. Then again, would the era even let her that? Firecracker, to give you an example, might be the best case for her 90's after her triumphs – sure, the disc is way too polished for her genre, but she keeps some of her idiosyncrasies present. Should she have been braver then? She could, though would the scene have cherished that?

“A BREATH OF FRESH AIR”
with Sandy Kaye
MON 2:00PM‬ & FRI 10:30PM
This week:
Leland Sklar has been a prominent figure among Hollywood session bassists with more than 2000 albums to his credit dating back to the 1970s and still counting.
His very recognisable bass playing style has been heard on hits by Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Hall & Oates, Jackson Browne, Carole King, Phil Collins, Keith Richards, Reba McEntire to name just a few.
Over the years Leland has worked with most of the top session players in Hollywood and is especially close to his long-time friends and members of “The Immediate Family” with drummer Russ Kunkel, guitarists Dan Kortchmar and Steve Postell.
Today the Immediate Family can legitimately be called a supergroup. They have a new album and are the subject of a brand new documentary.

This is a charcoal sketch of legendary bass player Leland Sklar. I was working in the maintenance department at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island for a short period in the 1970s (in other words I was a janitor). Leland was playing bass behind James Taylor and I was starstruck. Finding him on YouTube recently rekindled my fandom. So I sketched him. This is black charcoal and white pastel on gray paper.

Love Has Brought Me Around | James Taylor
Don't come to me with your sorrows anymore I don't need to know How bad you're feeling today I declare that I've had my share And I've heard it all before It's time for me to be stealing away Miss November I detect a frown Now you can close your eyes and turn it upside down
Love has brought me around Love has brought me around  Love has brought me around Love has brought me around (yeah, now)
When my sky was full of gray And my day was full of blue There was nothing I could do Just to see myself through Now my head is full of springtime And my heart is full of you Good-bye lonely blue It shall all come true
Let those storm clouds roll out on the sea Won’t you let the sun shine down on me, hey
Love has brought me around Love has brought me around Love has brought me around Love has brought me around (oh, now)
I know that you know That what I’ve got to say Is just an old cliche Anyway as they say
Love has brought me around Love has brought me around Love has brought me around Love has brought me around (yes, it has)

Eagles, Poco Co-founder Randy Meisner Dies at 77
Bassist Randy Meisner, who co-founded Poco and Eagles and was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit in both bands, has died at 77.
Both groups announced Meisner’s July 26 death on social media, with the Eagles citing complications of COPD.
“Randy was an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band,” the current lineup said in a statement. “His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit.’”
Former Eagles guitarist Don Felder called Meisner “one of the nicest, sweetest, most talented and funniest guys I’ve ever known.
“It breaks my heart to hear of his passing,” Felder said.
Meisner co-founded Poco after playing with Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band. He left Poco before its first album was released and helped start the Eagles.
“So very sorry to hear of the passing of Randy Meisner,” fellow bassist Leland Sklar said. “So instrumental in the creation of the Eagles.”
There he stayed until 1976’s Hotel California. As had happened with Poco, Schmit took Meisner’s place.
“May Randy Meisner rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

You have noticed I mentioned one member of Matchbox Twenty a lot. Then again, he's the frontman and the main songwriter, so this does make sense. However, I think that the group became seen as a solo vehicle for him thanks to Rob Thomas' lucrative side gig of penning the tunes for other people, which happened after his collaboration with Santana. I ask myself how many of these pieces were meant for Matchbox Twenty. I mean, check the tune on the link by Willie Nelson to contemplate the possibility. Since you noticed – yes, he cooperated with him, though the works they did together sound better in theory than in practice. Then again, the sheen of the early noughts are the reason for such a view, I assume them calling Rick Rubin would've been a more interesting option.

12 January 1985, Queen Headline the ‘Rock in Rio’ festival held at Barra de Tijuca, Rio, Brazil   This was a 10-day rock festival and the biggest music festival in history to date. Queen raised the bar by setting a record for a paying attendance, playing to 250,000 people each night - the biggest audiences they would ever play for. Some sources say the band played to as many as 350,000 (or even 470,000) on the first night!  Absolutely phenomenal! Due to Queen’s previous successful tours and their special love affair with South America, they were asked to headline the enormous event billed as ‘Rock in Rio.’  This was to be the biggest rock festival ever held in the world!  The band, of course, agreed as, even though they had some pretty traumatic experiences during their own tours there, they considered this festival just too good, and too big to miss.
The festival site was the ‘Barra de Tijuca’ in Rio, a specially built site that could hold an incredible, record breaking 250,000 people (sources say the audience for Queen was Past the 450,000 mark ).  The Brazilian television station, ‘Globo’ had set up cameras to record the festival to be televised throughout South America.  It was a colossal event, with local bands appearing alongside the top names.  Queen closed the show as they were set to perform at 2:00 AM!  They couldn’t believe the sight that greeted them - they played to huge audiences before, but never this big.  It was absolutely insane!  People had waited what seemed an eternity for their idols to walk on the stage.  People stretched from the front of the stage way back as far as the eye could see.  Freddie described the experience as “mind boggling.”  Their reception was deafening, and the crowd was with them all the way, singing along and clapping - until the encore, it didn’t matter it was way after 2:00 AM, the adrenaline was phenomenal as was Queen’s set!Since Queen hit the stage at 2am each night, technically the performances are dated the 12th and 19th respectively. The band give very solid performances on both nights, and Freddie sounds especially fantastic in the first night. After singing "I still love you" in ‘Love Of My Life,’ Freddie passionately shouts, "And don't you forget it!"  The fans went over the top crazy! You know they took over the song too.  Brian May used an EBow off the top of his solo spot for the first time since 1978. He last used it on stage in 1982 for ‘Get Down Make Love.’Freddie makes his entrance for ‘We Will Rock You’ holding a giant British flag behind him. Before singing the first verse he turns around and reveals a Brazilian flag embroidered to it, prompting a huge roar from the audience. At the end of the concert, he tosses the flag into the audience. James Taylor played the following night, and his bassist, Leland Sklar, had this to say about Queen's performance in a 2018 Bass Player magazine article: "It took me a day to lift my jaw off the floor. I sat with my mouth agape watching one of the most professional shows I'd ever seen." After the show, EMI threw a party in Queen's honour at the Copacabana Palace Hotel. On the beach outside the hotel, some fans had gathered for a candle-lighting vigil, where 1,500 candles spelled out the word "Queen", as seen in the last three pictures above. Security tried to keep the enthusiastic crowd away from Brian May who was coming out of the hotel, very touched by the gesture of the fans. After he lit the last few candles, he stayed around to sign autographs. Not long afterward he jumped into the pool fully clothed. In 2015 Globo TV aired an hour long special commemorating the 30th anniversary of the festival, including clips of ‘Under Pressure’ and ‘Love Of My Life’ - both of which were not seen on the official release. One notable piece of commentary is from Brazilian singer Eduardo Dussek, who remarks (in Portugese) that families, rockers, and the metalhead headbangers all accepted the band."  As mentioned above, a virtually complete video of the show has leaked into collectors' circles, although it is many generations from the master. The picture quality is acceptable, but the audio is far from great. Only a few seconds of ‘Under Pressure’ are missing.mThis concert is iconic and it’s about 6 months before Queen will break records again by stealing ‘Live Aid’ in July of 1985!  Long Live Queen - Four of the BEST MUSICAL GENIUSES !!

TODAY LIVE! SPECIAL PERSON - SPECIAL TIME ** 6 PM PT**
Leland Sklar, one of my favorite people on the planet, and no doubt many of yours, too, has played with everybody on everything: Phil Collins, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Billy Cobham, Carole King, Hall & Oates, Crosby Stills, & Nash... on and on and on... to the very present, with his compatriots in The Immediate Family: Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, and Steve Postel. They’ve got a new album, live shows, and Denny Tedesco's brilliant doc.
There’s been loads of TV, sessions, and touring, the man never stops, not even in COVID- he amped it up! His YouTube channel is HUGE. An active activist, he's stood up, compromising his own civil rights all over the place.
We’ll be talking about it all. The man gives great story and has the sweetest heart. Everybody Loves Lee! We'll talk about the book, in which I'm honored to be included, too. Win, win, win!
Did I mention I adore the man?
