#let's not forget the time Zhao was questioning Zuko about what happened to his ship and he was like
I don’t think we appreciate enough just how BAD Zuko and Iroh were at pretending to be earth kingdom refugees. It is a goddamn miracle that these two didn’t get caught within two days. “Where are you traveling from?” “YES WE’RE TRAVELERS!” Zuko, please act like a human. General ‘Dragon of the West’ Iroh chancing it and making some tea out of a random flower that was probably (and was) poisonous? The two of them finally getting into Ba Sing Se after weeks of almost dying several times after being found and Iroh just firebending in public for the sake of some subpar tea? We know exactly where Zuko got his impulse control from, no question about it. “We we’re part of a, ummmmm, traveling circus?” “Yes, I juggled.” Zuko, honey, babe, please just think of one convincing lie I’m begging you. Zuko deciding “fuck the girl I’m on a date with looks sad, time to whip out some firebending” to light up some lanterns at a PUBLIC FOUNTAIN. And then once the Jet drama dies down and Iroh finally gets his tea shop, what does he name it? The Jasmine DRAGON. Ah yes, a perfectly inconspicuous name for a perfectly inconspicuous pair of refugees who some guy very publicly accused of being firebenders just a month prior. Totally not firebenders. These two... I swear to god it’s a good thing there is no war in Ba Sing Se because fucking hell they were bad at lying.

Zuko x female reader series: Part One
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine being General Zhao’s daughter and the rebellious childhood best friend of Prince Zuko. You haven’t seen him since he was banished but come across his ship at sea and are reunited. It’s the first time you’ve ever seen Zuko’s scar and he’s worried what you’ll think of it.  Zuko’s particularly worried because despite being just friends your opinion matters a lot to him, because he’s just a bit (a lot) in love with you.
Part two here
Part three here
Part four here
Part Five here
Part Six here
Zuko’s POV
As soon as an admiral took over Zuko’s ship anger took over his body but then when he realised it was Zhao his anger faded. If Zhao was here that might mean you were too....with this in mind Zuko held his temper as Zhao swaned onto his ship and started giving his crew orders. Zuko searched all of Zhao’s crew mates but he couldn’t see you. He was barely listening to what Zhao was saying so eager to just see you, it’d been 3 long years and Zuko just wondered how you’d changed. When you didn’t appear Zuko sighed in defeat, he was itching to ask, to request to see you but he knew he couldn’t. Banishment forbid Zuko from contacting any one in any form, if he was to see you it’d have to be by chance and there was no way your father would let that happen. A fact made even more apparent as Zhao stood there smirking at the banished prince of the firenation, almost daring Zuko to dare mention your name. Iroh knew what Zuko wanted to ask, he’d seen his change in body language the second your father’s name was mentioned and he’d hoped you’d appear to lift his nephews spirits but you didn’t. He knew Zuko missed you but he also knew Zuko cared too much about you to risk dragging your name down with him. If it got out he’d been asking about you he could get you into trouble. So Zuko couldn’t ask about you but that didn’t mean Iroh couldn’t. “And where is your lovely daughter admiral? I heard she’s got a fleet just like yours”. Zuko tensed shocked and Zhao narrowed his eyes looking from Iroh to Zuko. Zuko’s eyes grew wide but he managed not to show any more emotion as held his breath, waiting for Zhao’s reply. “She’s not here” Zhao said smugly as he saw the prince’s posture slump, it was a micromovement but still Zhao noticed and smiled. “I sent her and her naval fleet to guard the fire nation borders”. “Aw that’s a shame” Iroh smiled sadly but he saw the look in Zhao’s eyes. The man was lying, you were here and he was going to buy Zuko some time with you. “How about a tour of your fleet Admiral?” he grinned at Zhao “one does not see a fleet as impressive as this every day”. Zhao smiled his ego stroked and nodded “of course, will the prince be joining us?”. Zuko glared and Iroh smiled “you stay here then, keep an eye on things” he smirked but his hint went right over Zuko’s head. The thought of seeing you had excited him but of course you weren’t here...nothing ever worked out for him. Zuko grunted and retreated to his room to sulk. Iroh scanned the horizon, he hoped you found Zuko and quickly, he would like to see his nephew smile again.
Your POV
You watched your father leave Zuko’s boat and smirked to only see Iroh with him, if you were a betting woman (and you were) you’d bet Zuko was still on the ship, probably sulking inside. You father tried to keep it a secret from you Zuko's boat was here but you had many eyes and ears throughout the fleet, mainly belonging to the workers who liked you because you didn’t threaten to burn them over any inconvenience unlike your father. The workers had whispered it to you and you discreetly made your way to the front of the fleet and boarded Zuko’s boat the second it was safe to. The crew apparently were expecting you, you suspected that was Iroh’s doing, and let you into Zuko’s quarters easily. You pushed open his door and smirked to see the familiar broad swords and belongings you’d forgotten about. Zuko was hunched over a desk in semi darkness and didn’t even look up when you entered. “I said I didn’t want to come on the tour uncle” he snapped and you smirked leaning against the door frame. “Well fine then guess I’ll go back to my own ship”. Zuko’s head snapped around so quickly you worried he’d get whip lash. “Y/n” he cried and rushed onto his feet. "The one and only" you smiled and walked forwards. It was weird neither of you were particularly sentimental but seeing each other again after 3 years you rushed to each other and just crumpled into one another. You only even hugged Zuko to embarass him but this was a serious hug. You clutched one another and held onto each other so tightly it hurt before seperating both grinning. "Zuko" you smiled and Zuko grinned back at you "it’s so good to see you but how...your father said you weren’t here". "So i figured" you rolled your eyes "now your reputation is questionable we wants to stop me associating with you, like him telling me that would stop me" you commented and Zuko’s grin got bigger. God you’d missed seeing that smile. "Still as headstrong as ever I see” Zuko smirked “the fire nation academy for girls hasn’t managed to change that?". You snorted "they tried but i’m pretty high ranking you know" you joked and Zuko laughed. You’d missed that laugh even more than the smile. Just happy to be in Zuko’s presence you just stared at him taking in everything detail of your best friend’s face before your eyes wandered to his scar. You hadn’t seen the scar before. You were away on a naval trip when Zuko was banished so this was the first time you’d seen it and you couldn’t help focusing on it. Zuko noticed you staring and went to turn that side of his face away self conscious and you winced “Zuko don’t!". Zuko paused and hesitated but obediently moved his head back so he was facing you, touching his scar awkwardly. "I forget you haven’t seen it before" he said quietly “that you weren’t there...”. You always felt guilty for not being there when Zuko was banished, you might’ve been able to stop it or atleast could’ve endured his punishment with him, so he didn’t have to face it alone. But you were at sea and didn’t even get back in time to say goodbye as your best friend was sent away for virtually forever. "What’s the verdict?” Zuko asked in an effort to fill the awkwardness “you were never one to lie to spare feelings so honestly how ugly does it look?". Zuko looked so sad, so beaten it broke you. Sure he’d never been particularly cheery but he’d never looked this sad before. An idea formed in your head and you smirked inwardly. "Honestly?" you asked wincing pretending to inspect his face and Zuko nodded staring at the ground. You smiled "well you were never a looker as a kid Zuko and i’m just saying that as your best friend okay! But you've grown up handsome scar and all" you grinned "if anything it makes you look dangerous, very attractive". Zuko blushed, grinned and looked away all at once. You smiled to see he no longer looked sad. "Shut up" Zuko managed to mutter and your smirk rose "i will not! I will tell everyone who will listen back at the palace how hot you’ve become". Zuko’s cheeks were almost as red as his scar as he put a hand infront of his face to hide it making you laugh. “I’ll be sure to say it infront of Mai in particular” you grinned bumping him with your elbow and Zuko’s blush grew. You took that to be because Zuko liked Mai but couldn’t be more wrong. Yes Zuko had been fond of Mai and he liked being around her but he always liked being around you more. When it became obvious you didn’t like him as anything more than a friend Zuko was heartbroken and started looking around for other options. Mai was one of those options and she was a good option, she was smart, beautiful, high ranking and they got along. Zuko had enjoyed dating her but it was never as good as it was just hanging out with you and that thought flooded back to Zuko the moment he saw you. He liked Mai but he was in love with you and nothing would ever change that. You took Zuko’s silence as him being shy and smiled grabbing onto his arm “awww look I made the prince blush”. “Stop it” Zuko said trying to get out of your grip but you only hugged him harder. “I will not! As your best friend it’s my job to tease you and I really am going to go tell Mai how ruggedly handsome you’ve grown, ponytail and all” you smirked twirling his hair with your fingers. Zuko managed to break out of your embrace and you laughed. “You see Mai often at the palace?” Zuko asked and you nodded flopping into one of his chairs. “Yeah we hang out some times” you explained and smiled to see Zuko’s shocked expression. “Suprisingly we get along rather well when you're not around, guess it’s cus we forget how gorgeous you are so can stop fighting over you for two minutes and talk" you said dramatically and Zuko blushed. Zuko remembered well the tension between you and Mai. Mai hadn’t trusted how close the two of you were, Mai thought Zuko liked you and she wasn’t wrong Zuko realised. Sure this banishment had made him realise how much he cared for you but it had always been there, he’d always cared about you more than anyone else since you were kids. "I forgot how embarassing you are" Zuko commented and you grinned at him. Zuko took the chance to examine your face and noticed all the ways it had changed in the years you’d been seperated. To Zuko’s eyes you’d only grown more beautiful but he knew that would be the case. Silence settled and Zuko’s face went all serious which you knew meant he wanted to tell you something. "It’s really good to see you” Zuko said into the floor “I’ve missed you a lot y/n" and you looked up at him suprised, Zuko never spoke about his emotions, atleast not so openly, you usually had to force them out of him. "Ive missed you too" you smiled taking his hand "when i got back and you were gone and when I heard your ridiculous mission...I worried I’d never see you again” you trailed off and tears filled your eyes. Zuko blinked shocked to see you so serious when you always had a smile or chip on your shoulder. But soon enough you shook your head and smiled again “so hurry up and capture the avatar so you can come home yeah?". Zuko laughed and nodded squeezing your hand “trust me I’m trying”. “Any way I can help, no matter how big, just tell me” you told him “I’ll do it and won’t tell a soul, I just need you back Zuko, you know I’m always thinking of you don’t you?”.”You haven’t forgotten me?” Zuko asked bashfully and you scoffed. “How could I forget my best friend! The person who made growing up in that hell hole bareable! The person who’d sneak me into the palace to get at the fancy food and then bail me out when I got caught. The person who gave me this scar” you smirked pointing to the large one on your arm “because he was so bad at sheathing his knives! Or the boy who gave me a turtle duck for my birthday when I was 8 because he knew I liked them but we didn’t have a pond”. Zuko smiled “you named it Jeremiah...how is he?”. “Good” you grinned “the point is i’ll never forget you, ever Zuko and soon enough you’ll be home again but until then I’ll keep your memory alive”. Zuko felt more emotion in these minutes then he’d felt in years. He knew he loved you, no matter all the times he’d tried to convince himself it wasn’t that serious, and was just overcome with the urge to tell you. He’d been terrified to admit his feelings to you for years but now he didn’t know if or when he’d next see you. What did he have to lose? “Y/n...” he started sitting forward “there’s something I’ve got to tell you...I’ve known for years but was too scared to....” when the door was thrown open. “Y/n” Zhao yelled storming into the room, Iroh close behind him “what are you doing in here?”. You rolled your eyes “seeing an old friend dad what does it look like?”. Your father looked furious but you were used to it now. “I told you to stay on your ship” your father glared and Zuko got angry at his tone. “It was my fault I asked her to come”. You shot Zuko a grin, he was always trying to cover for you but not this time. “No he didn’t, I found him, you had no buisness keeping this from me, Zuko’s my friend you know I’d do anything to see him”. Your father looked from you to Zuko and nodded, he had no doubt about that. He’d known the prince was in love with you for a while and back when he was an actual prince that had been good, now we was a rejected prince there was no way he’d encourage that. “Do you have any idea how much trouble you could get us in for this! You know you’re not allowed any contact with the traitor!” you dad yelled. You felt Zuko tense and stood infront of him blocking him from your father’s view. “Zuko’s not in the fire nation and neither are we, there’s no rule about avoiding him if our ships come close to one another and it’s not like I was here long”. “Still” Zhao glared “Ozai won’t like it! His punishment doesn’t include chats with friends”. You rolled your eyes “Zuko’s dad will never find out, who’s going to tell him?”. “I won’t” Iroh said helpfully and you nodded to your dad “see”. Your dad glared “fine but I want you out of here now! We are not risking falling out of favour just so you could see that excuse of a boy”.You rolled your eyes “whatever but let me say goodbye atleast”. Your dad went to object but you spun to face Zuko ignoring him. “Zuko i’m sorry whatever you had to say will have to wait till the next time I see you”. “whenever that is” Zuko muttered and you frowned. “Don’t talk like that” you commanded “I’ll see you again soon Zuko”. Zuko didn’t look convinced so you forced him to look at you closely. “Have I ever lied to you before? ever?”. “Many times” Zuko replied and you rolled your eyes “no about something as serious as this?”. “No” Zuko admitted and you smiled “see, so i’m telling the truth, i’ll see you soon enough, it won’t be that long, if anyone can do this mission it’s you, I know it!”. Zuko blushed and your father coughed “y/n now!”. “I’m coming” you snapped before you smiled at Zuko and hugged him tightly. Your father made an angry noise and Zuko blushed feeling his glares, he was hyper away many people were watching but hugged you back anyway. “I’ll miss you Zuko but nothing will ever stop you being my best friend”. Zuko blushed and nodded “I know”. “Y/n” your dad snapped and you nodded. “I love you Zuko” you smiled and his blush skyrocketed. He knew you didn’t mean it like he did but still hearing you say that... Zuko was aware of what a spectacle you were causing but it only made him smile more. You were always one to cause a scene, constantly over the top so he knew you were doing this to embarass him one last time before you left. He didn’t want to give you the satisfaction of winning so just replied honestly. ”I love you too” Zuko said and you grinned suprised he’d actually said it back as your father came and grabbed your arm “that’s enough”. You glared at him but squeezed Zuko’s hand “goodbye Zuko”. “Goodbye Y/n, i’ll be home soon, just you wait and see” and you grinned at him one last time before letting your father drag you out.
Zuko’s POV
Zuko watched you go ignoring the way his uncle was smirking at him or the way his chest now felt empty again. He would do everything and anything to capture the avatar so he could get back to the firenation. Not for his father, not for his reputation, not even to regain his honour but for you. Zuko would do anything necessary to get back to you, nothing not even an impossible mission would get in his way.

Grace and Power pt. 1
Reunion
This would be so much better if I came up with a name for this fic.
A/N: This is in fact not the first time I wrote a reader insert but it is in fact the most work i’ve ever put into one.
Warnings: None
Word count: 2100
You opened the flap to the tent that would temporarily house retired General Iroh, Prince Zuko and Commander Zhao. When you entered you saw two guards blocking the exit from Zuko and his Uncle with two spears.
You and Zuko locked eyes, an emotion that can only be described as shock graced his features. You gave him a tight lipped smile before looking towards your commanding officer, Zhao.
“Commander Zhao,” You said, making Iroh and the formerly mentioned look your way. You noticed a similar look of shock on Iroh’s face. “We interrogated the crew as you instructed. They confirmed Prince Zuko had the Avatar in their custody, but let him escape.”
“Now remind me,” Zhao grinned before walking up to stand behind Zuko, whose face morphed from shock to hurt and betrayal. You looked down at the ground, you hoped that you following orders wouldn’t ruin your short lived reunion. “How exactly was your ship damaged.”
Zuko looked down in defeat.
Prince Zuko and Iroh were seated across from Commander Zhao who was standing in front of his desk.
You and another guard were standing behind the young prince.
“So,” Zhao began, “A twelve-year-old boy bested you and your firebenders.”
“Wait, the avatar is twelve? You’ve spent the last, nearly three years looking for a twelve year old boy.” You said looking at the prince.
Zuko nodded in response. You looked up and pondered on that thought for a moment before mumbling to yourself.
“And I thought I had nothing better to do with my life.”
Zhao cleared his throat drawing your attention towards him.
“My apologies, sir.” You said bowing towards him.
“You’re more pathetic than I thought.” Zhao continued as if nothing happened.
You looked up at Zhao. You never understood how a man could be so cruel to a child.You knew you hated Zhao when you saw the twisted smirk that was on his face when Ozai burnt Zuko.
Zuko spoke up, “I underestimated him once, but it will not happen again.”
Zhao turned his back to the prince before stating, “No, it will not, because you won't have a second chance.”
When Zuko spoke up again he sounded almost frightened, “Zhao, I’ve been hunting the Avatar for two years and I-”
Before the price could finish his sentence Zhao turned on him hottily, flames erupting from his hand as he swept it in an arc from left to right.
“And you failed.” He finished for the prince. “Capturing the Avatar is too important to leave in a teenager's hands.” You don't understand why Zhao used that as an excuse. He watched with his own two eyes as you took on ten of his men, with nothing but a katana, during one of his training exercises.
“He’s mine now.” Zhao finished his sentence.
Zuko threw himself at Zhao in frustration and anger. You and the guard beside restrained him. While he was struggling in your grips you were rolling your eyes.
“Zuko calm down, you don't wanna do anything you might regret.” You said to him.
He ignored you, causing you to roll your eyes again.
Before Zhao could leave the tent he turned to you and the guard, Zuko still struggling in your grasps, “Keep them in here.” You and the Guard nodded.
When Zhao left Zuko gave a demonstration of his anger by kicking the table stationed next to Iroh. You and the other Guard let go oh his arms soon after.
Zuko turned to you, fire in his eyes, finger hitting you in the chest accusingly, “How could you.” He practically spat in your face.
You didn’t flinch, “How could I what?” You questioned, your eyebrows furrowed as you looked towards the prince. “Do my job?” You asked further.
Zuko crossed his arms over his chest and scoffed at your words, “Job.” He said in a sour tone. “You’re a year younger than me. How could you possibly have a place in the military.”
Iroh watched the whole interaction calmly, with a fond expression on his face. Remembering the good old days when you two would fight and argue.
“It’s not like I had a say in the matter. Zhao saved my life, sadly I’m in debt to him.”
Zuko crossed his arms and turned away from you in a huff.
Iroh stood up before walking over to you and placing his hand on your shoulder, “I am very enlightened to see you again Y/N. We should celebrate. How about some more tea!” He exclaimed. Zuko rolled his eyes, and you had a fond look on your face. You missed these two so much.
After an undetermined amount of time Zhao finally re-enters the tent.
Zuko and Iroh were seated in chairs facing one another.
“My search party is ready.” Zhao said addressing Iroh and Zuko.
“Once I’m out at sea, my guards will escort you back to your ship and you’ll be free to go.” Zhao said.
“Why? Are you worried I’m going to try and stop you?” Zuko retorted.
You felt like your eyes were gonna fall out of their sockets if you kept rolling them so much.
Zhao laughed, “You? Stop me? Impossible.”
Zuko stood up from his seat, “Don't underestimate me, Zhao. I will capture the Avatar before you.”
“Prince Zuko, that's enough!,” Iroh said standing as well.
“You can't compete with me. I have hundreds of warships under my command, and you... you're just a banished prince. No home. No allies. Your own father doesn't even want you.”
You couldn’t believe anyone would dare utter such things to royalty, banished, yes, but still royalty nonetheless.
“You're wrong. Once Zuko delivers the Avatar to his father, Ozai will welcome him home with honor and restore his rightful place on the throne.”
You didn’t even know what you were saying, the words just began to spew out of your mouth, and you had no control over it.
Zhao turned on you, his face red with anger.
“You’ve only been here two weeks, what makes you think you have the right to speak to a Commander in such a way.” Zhao growled at you.
You opened your mouth to retort but he cut you off.
“If Fire Lord Ozai really wanted him home, he'd have let him return by now, Avatar or no Avatar, but in his eyes the so-called “Prince Zuko” is a failure and a disgrace to the Fire Nation.”
You tried to speak up once more, but his time Zuko cut you off. You swear you were gonna stab someone.
“That's not true.” Zuko said.
Zhao turned to Zuko with a nasty face, “You have the scar to prove it.”
Zuko launched himself and the commander and you made no attempt to stop him.
“Maybe you'd like one to match!” He shouted in his face.
“Is that a challenge?” the commander questioned.
“An Agni Kai. At sunset.” Zuko said.
You froze. Yeah you wanted someone to put Zhao in his place but you didn't want Zuko to fight in another Agni Ka, considering what happened at the last one.
“Very well. It's a shame your father won't be here to watch me humiliate you. I guess your uncle and your little girlfriend will do.” Zhao said smugly.
Zhao turned to walk out of the tent, he stopped and looked at you before saying,”Your actions will cause you to suffer major consequences. I hope you are ready to face them after you have to watch the prince face another devastating defeat.”
Zhao finally left the tent. You were glaring daggers at the spot he was previously standing.
Iroh walked up to Zuko “Prince Zuko, have you forgotten what happened last time you dueled a master?”
“I will never forget.” Zuko responded.
Iroh, Zuko, Zhao and You were in a Fire Nation Arena. Zhao and Zuko were kneeling, backs facing one another, preparing for battle. Zhao had 4 of his men in attendance, whilst Zuko only had you and Iroh but that was enough.
“Remember your fire bending basics, Prince Zuko.” Iroh said, “They are your greatest weapon.”
Zuko stood up, “I refuse to let him win.”
His shoulder wrap fell to the ground. You swept your eyes over his muscular figure.
A small piece of your heart shattered at the realization that Zuko was no longer that sweet 13 year boy old you knew all those years ago.
Zhao stands and turns, his shoulder wrap falling off his shoulders, as well.
“This will be over quickly.” Zhao stated.
Atop the gate a gong sounds. Both men face each other and assume firebending stances.
Zuko fires the first shot which passes harmlessly to Zhao's left. He fires again, this time it passes without effect to Zhao's right. Zuko fires several more, the last of which Zhao blocks, satisfaction evident on his face. Frustrated and losing control of his breath, Zuko moves towards the commander, unleashing more fire from both his hands and feet. Zhao dodges and blocks them all. Zhao then crouches forward and shoots flame at a point on the ground close in front of him.
From the corner of your eyes you saw Iroh watching anxiously.
“Basics, Zuko! Break his root!” You heard the retired General exclaim.
Zhao fires many blasts of flames, alternating between his fists. Zuko blocks each, but is slowly forced back. On the last strike Zhao uses both hands, knocking Zuko over and sending him skidding backwards in the dirt.
You hold in your breath hoping he’s okay.
 Zhao takes a flying jump at Zuko. Zhao lands as he tries to get up, but he isn't fast enough. Zhao fires right at him. Zuko rolls out of the way just in time, and as he is getting up sweeps Zhao's feet out from under him.
You finally exhale the breath, your chest gently rising and falling.
Zuko lands on his feet, a slight smile appears on his face. Zuko walks towards Zhao, using his feet to produce small waves of flame that rush toward his opponent. Zhao is caught off balance and wobbles slowly backward.
Iroh clenched his fist in an expression of hope, a smile beginning to spread over his face.
Zuko finally lays Zhao out flat on the ground with a blast of fire. Zuko rushes up to him, prepared to deal the final blow.
“Do it!” Zhao yells.
Zuko releases a blast that shoots to the side of Zhaos’ face.
“That's it? Your father raised a coward.” He sneered at Zuko.
“Next time you get in my way, I promise I won't hold back.” Zuko said.
He turned his back on the pathetic Commander and began to walk away.
You took notice of how Zhao got up and shouted in anger. He unleashed a wip of flame at Zuko. You stepped in before the flames could hit the princes back. The fire coming from Zhaos’ foot is extinguished as your gloved hand closed over his foot.
You gave the commander a nasty look. “After this horrendous display of you being a sour loser,” You said in a sweet tone, “I have decided to tender in my resignation.” You finished dropping his foot causing him to stumble and land on his butt.
Iroh and Zuko appeared to be frozen in time for a moment before Zuko rounded on Zhao.
You turned and placed your hand on Zukos’ chest, and looked him in the eye. He looked down at you.
“Don’t.” You said in a hushed tone.
Yould see the moment's hesitation in his eyes before he slapped your hand off of his chest and continued advancing toward the Commander.
“No, Prince Zuko.” Iroh said after he witnessed your failed attempt to stop the angered Prince. “Do not taint your victory.”
Iroh turned to face Zhao, a look of disdain on his face.
“So this is how the great Commander Zhao acts in defeat. Disgraceful.”
“I wholeheartedly agree.” You chimed.
“Even in exile my nephew is more honorable than you.”
Zuko looked at Iroh in surprise at his statement.
“Thanks again for the tea. It was delicious.” Iroh said finally to the Commander
Iroh moved to leave, You and Zuko followed closely behind. With burning anger, Zhao watches them exit the gate of the arena.
Outside, Zuko quietly asked Iroh,”Did you really mean that, Uncle?”
Iroh slyly stated, “Of course. I told you ginseng tea is my favorite.”
You couldn’t help but snort at his declaration. Sending you into a full laughing fit followed soon by Iroh and eventually Zuko, as the three of you walked towards the harbor.
~~~
And that’s the end... for now.
"The Last Airbender" honest commentary by me
-> I remember I watched this once, when I was something like 12, and I think my mind FORCED me to forget about it, and now that I'm 20 I feel the urge to watch it again. I saw clips on YouTube so it's not like I know nothing at all, but very very little. I'm honestly scared. I'll point out the things that I like too, if I find something like it. So... bring it on.
---
What is that gibberish in the background even supposed to mean? As someone who studies Japanese I am deeply disappointed. "But A:TLA's words are in Chinese!!" yes. But, for those who don't know, Japanese imported them as kanji so I can recognize them even if I don't speak Chinese, for these characters are written in the same way, even if pronounced differently. Or, well, I could recognize them if this gibberish meant anything. But it doesn't.
Not a fan of the prologue written onscreen as Katara reads it aloud (I suppose it's her?) to be honest. Especially when it's in... English. At this point why not changing that ugly gibberish into the English translation of the words? It would've made more sense, even if it doesn't.
Katara and Sokka sure are very... huh... White. Watching the racism and whitewashing jump out is too painful. Damn, I'm already upset with this movie and I'm only 2:35 minutes in.
A:TLA Sokka would never raise a finger on his sister- never in a million years. This dude straight up grabbed her arm! Not. Cool. Dude.
"I thought about Mom, isn't that strange..?" no Katara, it really isn't. She's your dead mother, it's not strange to think about her. That sentence just seems forced, it's got nothing to do with what's happening.
Okay, Sokka following his father's teachings is actually accurate, nice one.
I take it back. Sokka, what the actual fuck- why would you break the ice right under your feet?? A:TLA Hakoda would be very disappointed.
Oh, look, Aang's white too. How surprising.
Katara, the kid just woke up from a coma, stop asking him a thousand questions, cut Aang some slack!
Acting skills sooo not on point. Maybe the actors are actually good, and maybe it's just the dialogues that are... off. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and see how it goes.
I apprecciate the effort of trying to make Aang's tattoos look "cool" but next time, please don't.
This camera work is giving me a headache. The angles keep changing rapidly with no reason, and sometimes the camera's too close to the actors... Who did this?
Are Katara and Sokka the only white people in their village? I'm... confused.
"I am Prince Zuko." uh???? Where's your scar? Come on, that is literally one of the main points around which his story revolves, you can't just not put it there. I'm so upset.
Oh... that's the scar? Dude, I have a worse scar on my knee, I'm not even joking.
Of course Katara and Sokka's grandma is white, makes sense. So there's three white people in this village while everyone else is Asian, from what I saw. So it's okay to cast Asians as extras but not as the main characters? Holy shit, this movie is so problematic already.
Zuko, for fuck's sake, stop yelling. Aang's right in front of you, you two are, like, three inches apart. Stop screaming!
Firebenders need firepits to draw fire from..? Just bring a flamethrower with you next time, it'd be more efficient than your attacks anyway...
I'm not even 11min in and I want to stop already. I can't endure another 1:30h of this. I'm not strong enough.
"[Our mom] would have fought!" she didn't, that's the whole point. She surrendered to protect you, Katara, and the others. I get that the producers changed the story a little, it's normal, but- you can't change these things.
These dialogues... I want to rip my ears off. So little logic, so little pathos, such a poor timing- I want to cry.
Okay, this Iroh seems pretty similar to A:TLA's, thank goodness they didn't mess him up too much.
That is NOT how you pronounce Iroh!! I was a fool to think that there was one character that hadn't been completely ruined in this movie.
Nice nod to Hama, not bad.
Grandma casually has a map next to her when she needs it... Okay, I guess.
The scene on the ship- I'm speechless. Negatively speechless. I want to wash my eyes with bleach.
I love how Zuko just watches Aang fly away, like- "oh, there he goes". A:TLA Zuko would've jumped into the freezing ocean and swam toward him if he had to.
I can't get over their pronunciation of Aang. Ahng? Ohng? What is the reason behind this- why did they change it? He's literally the main character, you just don't do that.
With all due respect, the CGI is bad. I get that this movie is kinda old, but... No. There are older movies with better special effects. Low budget, maybe? I don't know.
"Souuka and I-" it's Sokka. Not Souuka. Sokka.
Zhao is hateful and annoying, which is accurate. I miss the ugly sideburns though.
Iroh calmly sipping tea while Zuko kicks ass- spot on, I can't deny that.
I hate Sokka so much. He's completely out of character, too annoying, uncharacteristically angsty and so boring. How can someone completely mess up a cool character like him?
"There is earth right beneath your feet"... oh my God, for real? Wow, how did they not notice that sooner...
"It's time for you to stop doing this!" reminds me of that one vine with the kid that yells "whEn wiLL yOu LeArN tHAt yoUR aCTioNs hAve ConSeqUEnceS!?", I don't know why.
Katara pushes a Firebender. She pushes him. He could burn her to a crisp and she- okay, you know what, I'm just going to ignore it.
Again with the firepits, I can't even-
It takes six Earthbenders to lift the rock the size of a chair..? And they also have to make a little dance to do that..?
The extras in the background don't even move- guys, at least pretend to dodge or be afraid, or cower backwards, don't just observe while you stand still looking as if you were glancing at the horizon.
Literally everyone in this movie is portrayed by Asian and Middle Eastern actors except for the main characters... Who allowed this, who said that this was okay? Seriously, who. Please, fire this person.
If Aang can't bend the other elements, what was that on Zuko's ship? Were the fire, the rock and the water acting up because Aang was there? It makes no sense.
"Avatars can't have a family." are you sure? 'Cause Roku did, even Wan (and Korra, after Aang) in a way, and many other Avatars too, I'm sure. That's not why he ran away, not at all.
Again with the fake Chinese characters... I mean, I think they were trying to imitate Chinese cursive writing, but... The lines are so straight, so stiff, so clean- there is no way that authentic cursive looks like that. Have you ever seen Japanese cursive? The characters are unrecognizable, but the lines are fluid and curved, not like that.
The scene with Katara and Aang practicing by the river confuses me because- I don't see any water being bent. Is it just me? I'm serious, maybe I just didn't see it..?
Ozai asking about Zuko and acting mildly concerned and almost caring is off-character. It makes it look like he feels guilty, when A:TLA Ozai does not. Also, let's say that this Ozai feels guilty, why doesn't he just welcome his son back, then? But he doesn't, 'cause he indirectly says so, so it makes no sense.
More gibberish. Please, stop. Don't do that again. I beg you.
"-sentenced to Agni KEE." goddamn it. Agni KAI. Not KEE. KAI! Why is that so hard for these people to say things right?
I still don't see any Waterbending. Are they just moving randomly? Are the practicing without actually bending the water..?
Oh, alright, now there's water moving, that's better. Still, so many movements for a little stream of water being lifted in the air- almost like that dance the Earthbenders did earlier. Seems excessive.
Is that monstrosity supposed to be Appa? Why is his face so- human? Oh Spirits, forgive them!
Again with this "I can have no family." thing- did the producers even watch the whole show or just read the summary of Wikipedia?
You know what, the Blue Spirit mask is accurate, in a way. Old masks used to have wigs attached sometimes, so it's not as bad as it seems. His stance though- that's a big no.
Zuko's swords don't actually hit anything most of the times he swings them around- just saying.
"What is this?". Ugh, Zhao, Aang's an AIRbender. Get it? AIR. So he is moving the AIR. I mean, you know he's an airbender, why are you acting surprised that he can redirect the wind?
Yue's white too... I checked online, and I discovered that the actress has Mexican origins: this has nothing to do with Asia and the Middle East so I personally consider this as a desperate attempt to include diversity- as if there were no actual Asian and Middle Eastern actors out there, but fine, I guess. What was I expecting at this point? Oh, I also know that this actress is Asami's V.A. which doesn't change much but since I like Asami I'll pretend to like this Yue too, a bit.
Extra™ moves to create a 10ft tall tornado... Okay, Aang, you're the boss.
Pakku is white too, hm? I don't know what to say anymore. Should I just stop pointing out this cast is so, so wrong? Probably. Will I? No.
Sokka's face when Yue tells him her hair's white because she was stillborn- that is the only realistic face he's done so far. Also, Yue's acting is not that off, and I actually like it! She's better than others.
More waterbending without water. Budget cuts.
I take that back, Yue is basically smiling when Sokka tells her that the Fire Nation is there, like, come on! Yue, I believed in you...
The dialogues are so fake, nobody talks like that! I'm sure that this is among the reasons why the actors seem incapable of doing their job- I'm sorry for these people, maybe the poor performance is not entirely their fault.
I'm trying to figure out what's up with Zuko's hair, and I'm not talking about the fact that it doesn't grow where the scar is, that's normal. What bothers me are those spikes he has on the front and on the back- or whatever they are. I am confused. Better than ponytail!Zuko, worse than all the other haircuts he had in A:TLA.
Zuko's actor is the best one in this movie so far, in my opinion. He's believable. He yelled a lot in the beginning, but now (1:12h in) he's not that odd.
How to understand when a scene has been not thought through: when characters don't do something that normal people would do. Zuko throws fire at Aang when he tries to escape, and then he just stands less than ten feet apart as Aang hides- he watches him, he stands there like "okay, I can't attack you now because the script says I'm not supposed to". Then do not include him in the shot! Or, at least make him say something- no, he just stands there and watches as his enemy is literally three seconds away from him. He could reach him with a little leap, without even running!
They showed Azula for a split second in the Agni Kai scene and then Zuko mentioned her once. Is that all? I hope to see her more, even a little something. Not including her would be a huge waste.
I don't ever want to see Appa again. So ugly he's scary. Who is the person that created the CGI for our amazing flying bison that we fell in love with? This isn't Appa, it's... Something else, something terrible.
The scene where Yue passes out when Zhao kills the Spirit- the secondhand embarrassment is real there. I had to look away, it's so bad.
This Zhao is maybe the most out of character person in this movie, and it's hard to beat Aang and Sokka so that sure is something...
If they say "Souuka" one more time I'll cry. I'm serious. I'll do it.
Alright, alright, the scene where Aang saves the day is pretty cool, I liked it, despite the questionable CGI.
Why do Katara and Sokka keep Aang upright by gripping his upper arms so tightly? That hurts! There are different ways to do that, less painful and more efficient.
Ozai looks like he has no idea of what he's talking about, he looks like me when I read maths.
There she is, Azula!! Wait- are we seeing her again?
...okay, we're not.
---
What can I say... Disastrous. No cabbage man, literally only five seconds of Azula, everyone is out of character, bad casting, bad pronunciation, gibberish wannabe Chinese characters, odd CGI... Everything is wrong.
Sun Spirit Sokka AU
So I got this idea like, in the fandom we always talkin bout shipping the sun and the moon right? I mean we usually use that in reference to zutara, but what about the actual sun and moon? Yue is connected to the moon spirit, so what if Sokka was connected to the sun spirit? Like not only would Sokka be all frustrated because he doesn't like all that spirit nonsense, but also(and especially) because Agni is a Fire Nation deity. Lets not forget, sun and moon power couple. Just. Yes.
-While he's still quite small, Sokka falls through the ice.
-Agni comes to little Sokka's aid, trying to hold his spirit to his body. But Hakoda isn't able to get his boy out of the water before lethal hypothermia sets in. Rather than let the child die, Agni imparts some of his life into Sokka, reviving him.
-Hakoda is relieved to see color starting to return to his son's face as he coughs, sucking in breaths once more. He bundles him up and rushes him back home, despite Sokka's protests that he's too hot.
-From Sokka's perspective, after falling through the ice he felt the cold closing in around him. Then he suddenly felt a hand grabbing him, only the hand felt wicked hot, like fire itself had latched onto him. He tried to open his eyes, but all he could see was a man with a face as bright and white hot as the sun. The hand kept pulling him towards the bright, radiating heat, until he could no longer feel the freezing ocean around him. The hand held onto him, and he could hear the crackling of fire, however the world was fading from view. Just before he slipped from consciousness he felt like fire was flowing into his mouth, it burned its way down his throat until it reached his stomach were it got hotter and hotter until it felt like he had a tiny sun inside of him. He forced his eyes open to see his father's concerned face, wrapping him in furs to keep him warm. But Sokka already felt like he was burning from the inside-out, and squirmed and moaned in protest.
-The next week or so, Sokka remained inside, being cared for by his mother and grandmother. His sister also stayed by his side, worried that he might not be there is she left. But there was also another person who watched over him during this time. A strange man dressed in fine reds who seemed to have his face constantly obscured by some bright glow. He radiated just as much heat as the fire pit, and strangest of all, he spoke like the crackling of fire. But no one ever addressed the mysterious firebender in the room. So Sokka simply assumed he was a hallucination and left it at that.
-The night before Sokka's fever finally broke, the strange man stood up and walked outside, the taking the life of the flames with him and leaving Sokka in the cold dark.
-The next morning Sokka felt better than ever. He went back along with his life, casually ignoring the faint sensation of the sun blazing within him. He couldn't feel any literal burn, so he reasoned that there wasn't actually anything there.
-After the whole ordeal though, Sokka noticed some of his fellow tribe members giving him a wide berth. He was very confused at first, until Katara explained to him that his eyes had turned to a very firey-looking gold color.
-While even Hakoda had some concerns about his son's sudden eye color change, Sokka proved quick enough that he was the same kid he'd always been. It's not long before people go back to treating him normally.
-Soon after the event, Sokka notices that not only does he have a newfound affinity for fire, but also he wakes with the sun, and while he feels much more sensitive to the cold, he found that he's better able to keep himself warm. He convinces himself that since he can't throw flames from his fists, he's not a firebender.
-Sokka becomes deathly ill during the Long Night(polar winter). He feels icy cold on the inside, and becomes increasingly lethargic as the earth tilts further away from the sun's light. Katara stays by his side the whole time(because siblings who care deeply about one another are my bread and butter.) Each time it happens, Katara grows more and more concerned that Sokka won't survive. However, he promises her that he won't leave her and he'll always be there to protect her.
-When the Southern Raiders come, Hakoda makes Sokka go hide with his sister. He's never seen Sokka produce fire, but deep in his gut, he knows that once the firebenders take one look at Sokka's golden eyes, they'll drag him away and corrupt the poor boy.
-After loosing his mother, Sokka goes off by himself to cry when he feels a warm hand on his shoulder. He quickly wipes his tears and pulls himself together before turning around to see a man dressed in fine reds. He can't see his face, it's somehow obscured by the sun(or maybe it is the sun). Sokka pulls away venomously. In a fit of rage, he attempts to strike the man, but before his fist can connect, he's not there anymore. In fact, it was like he was never there in the first place. Freaked out, Sokka sulks away.
-When Zuko comes on his ship, he takes one look at Sokka with his blazing gold eyes and Water Tribe looks and has several questions. However instead of using words like a normal person, Zuko throws fire at Sokka. Having fire thrown at his face, Sokka lapses into instinct and cancels the attack out with a fireball of his own. Zuko keeps throwing fire at Sokka, who responds by somehow bending the flames away. Sokka's not sure how he's using fire magic, but if it can stop him from getting burned he'll take it. The most major questions in Zuko's mind are, is this boy a half-breed, or-
-His question is answered when Aang bursts in a penguin-otter. Well, partially answered at least. Zuko gets a strange feeling from Sokka though. Normally he can sense other firebenders through their inner flame, but this one seems to have an inner sun. He commands his men to take both the Avatar and the strange firebender with them.
-Of course Iroh is able to see right away that Sokka has been touched by the sun. Iroh is subtle about it and decides to have tea and pleasant conversation with Sokka.
-Iroh looks the other way when Sokka and Aang escape with Katara.
-As much as he doesn't like the Fire Nation, Sokka has to admit that Iroh is very pleasant to talk to. He seems like such a nice old man, and as much as Sokka wanted to think it was an act, he can't ignore that Iroh intentionally let them get away.
-Being the embodiment of the sun nearly ends badly for poor Sokka on Kyoshi.
-Skipping ahead a bit~
-Once they reach the North Pole, they recognize Sokka as a firebender right away, but Yue comes to his rescue.
-Tui speaks through her and scolds the guards for trying to drown Agni. Sokka's confused as to why this pretty girl just called him Agni, but if it stops him from being drowned he's a-ok with it.
-Yue and Sokka connect with one another right away. While Sokka is immediately smitten, Yue doesn't start to fall for him until she starts to get to know him.
-At first Yue doesn't see a problem with hanging out with Sokka, as she's just getting to know him as a friend, but she starts to feel bad when she develops feelings for him. Seeing as she's already engaged.
-Sokka stays with Katara and Yue while Aang seeks out the aid of the spirits.
-When Zuko comes, Agni speaks through Sokka and commands Zuko to stand down. When Zuko refuses, Tui takes control of Yue and she and Katara freeze Zuko to the wall.
-When Yue explains her back story and how she came to embody the moon, she explains to Sokka that the sun spirit, Agni had imparted some of his life into Sokka to save him.
-Sokka's lowkey frustrated that the patron spirit of the Fire Nation lives within him.
-When Zuko comes to at dawn, Sokka's ready for him and has Agni command the prince to stand down once again. Feeling the full force of the sun, Zuko reluctantly complies and the group tie him up.
-When Zhao tries to kill Tui, Agni pushes Sokka into action and he attacks Zhao. Katara, Sokka, Yue and Iroh manage to defeat all of Zhao's firebenders before Sokka throws another fire blast causing Zhao to nearly fall into the spirit pool.
-Sokka tries to get Agni to tell Zhao to stand down, when a dark pair of arms reach out from the spirit pool and drag him under. The group look all over for the man, but Agni tells Sokka that Zhao is gone.
-Sokka feels a deep, dark dread at that.
-Iroh takes Zuko with him, and Yue ends up joining the Gaang.
-Sun and Moon power couple fuck yeah.
-Being one with Agni grants Sokka fire power, and being one with Tui grants Yue water power. However, the two of them have to rely on Tui and Agni until they can learn to properly bend themselves. Yue has a little bit of bending experience, and Katara ends up with two students instead of one. Sokka just has what little Jeong-Jeong could teach him. So Agni takes Sokka on as a student, imparting his knowledge of fire onto his mortal emissary.
-Sokka being connected to Agni does get back to the Fire Nation, and uh... They're not just gonna stand by and let the chosen emissary of their patron deity get paraded around by a bunch of Water Tribe.
Ginseng Tea
It could be used to reduce inflammations, boost the immune system, fight tiredness and increase energy levels. Not for children , pregnant women or women that are breastfeeding.
Katara and Sokka glanced at each other as Aang talked about the Southern Air Temple. He still had hope that there could be survivors at any of the Air Temples. The siblings both had the same general thought. One hundred years had past since the annihilation of the Air Nomads and no one had seen any since then. Until Aang that is.
-.-
He was dressed in his Fire Nation uniform, sipping badly brewed tea and ignoring the newly promoted Commander Zhao. Ugh, the guy just didn't stop trying to get under his skin. It had reached the point where it was plain sad. He wished Uncle hadn't accepted Zhao's invitation for tea.
Zuko put a stop to his inner monologue. Zhao was outlining the Fire Nation's plan for conquering the Earth Kingdom. It couldn't have been thought through. Only a fool would believe that the Earth Kingdom would fall so quickly to that supposed plan. The only way the Fire Nation would even have a tiny chance at succeeding would be if Uncle helped them. He'd already seen Ba Sing Se. Iroh had told him once that he already knew possible strategies for conquering the city even with the added security.
"Tell me Prince Zuko. How is your search for the Avatar going?"
Zuko allowed a bit of his old self to resurface. Fake bitterness and impatience clear in his voice with just a tint of haughtiness. "Unfruitful." He hated himself for stooping so low.
Then one of Zhao's men walked in to deliver a newly received message. It was about a flying bison.
-.-
Lieutenant Jee kept a close eye on Zhao's men. They were quite clearly trying to extract information from them. It was unlucky for them that the crew of the Floating White Lotus was extremely loyal to Iroh and Zuko. It did worry him though when one of the soldiers found a crate filled with tea sets.
This could very well ruin everything. Jee remained calm and acted like he wasn't eavesdropping. If they suspected anything out of the norm he would-
"Remember that The Dragon of The West is an avid tea drinker. I wouldn't be surprised if Prince Zuko destroys dishes for, spirits know what, reason."
Jee felt himself relax ad he heard his crew mutter about the Prince's temper. He could even hear the cock go onto a one sided rant about Zuko's tendency to destroy anything and everything when he got angry. Say what you want, but they sure knew how to act.
"Sir!"
He turned around and saw one of his men running towards him. It was the one that had been tasked with shadowing Iroh and Zuko. The man was breathing heavily, but still managed to croak out some very surprising news. "Prince Zuko challenged Commander Zhao to an Agni Kai at sunset."
"Oh…WHAT!"
-.-
Zuko didn't care for much since his banishment. For a time the only thing he could feel was anger towards himself, his father and his sister. The only one he hadn't felt any anger towards was Iroh. Uncle took him under his wing when he got banished. It was thanks to his uncle's guidance that Zuko changed to the person he was today.
Zuko had seen red when Zhao began saying unsavory things to the man. Consequences be damned. Iroh reminded him of his last Agni Kai as he got ready to fight.
He only paused for a second as he remembered that duel.
Flashback~
Zuko breathed heavily and glared at his father as he fought against him. He knew he did wrong to question the man's plans, but it had been necessary. That so called plan was based on sending an entire division on a suicide mission. It showed no respect to the soldiers and used them as nothing other than replaceable pawns.
It was for them that Zuko wasn't giving Ozai the satisfaction of watching him beg. That would mean regretting speaking up for all those men that would more than likely still die once he got killed by his own father.
Zuko wished he was born in a different family in another nation. But he held no regrets whatsoever as unconsciousness took him.
End of Flashback~
Zuko took a deep breath and got into a stance as he and Zhao prepared to fight. They waited for the gong to signal the start of the Agni Kai.
Zhao was one of the many people that saw him as nothing more than a bitter, impatient and weak boy who the Fire Lord should have killed three years ago. So when the fight began Zhao underestimated his opponent. Iroh had managed to teach him a thing or two.
It was too bad for Zhao that by the time he'd made sense of what was happening Zuko already had him on the ground. The teen was standing over him with both hands covered in flames. "Do it. Kill me."
"I wouldn't tempt me." Zuko allowed the flames to die out. "Never speak ill of my uncle in my presence again. Next time I won't be as nice."
It was clear who the winner was.
Zuko turned away and walked back to Iroh. Zhao could see the old general smile and give the boy a pat on the back. Then he heard him congratulate the Prince for holding back. HOLDING BACK!
"Let's celebrate this over a cup of tea, Prince Zuko." Iroh congratulated his nephew once more. He looked back to see Zhao gruffly get back up. Iroh gave the defeated Commander one of his well known smiles. A smile with a hidden warning. One that Commander Zhao definitely saw as he quickly left.
-.-
"Where to next?"
"Kyoshi Island. We are set to deliver supplies there."
"You heard the kid. Set sail for Kyoshi Island."
Plum Tea
It is used to maintain healthy bones. Could help with restoring lost bone density and protecting the body against age related impairments. The copper in plums are essential for nerve health and also acts as an antioxidant. Helpful for anemia-like blood related diseases. (Gran-Gran loves plum tea. Jee hates it.)
Sokka resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the young monk. "You mastered airbending and that only took you a hundred and twelve years. I'm sure you can master three more elements by next summer." Aang had been pacing in Appa's saddle for what seemed like forever while going on about how he needed to learn the rest of the elements. The deadline didn't help. "I'm sure Katara could teach you some waterbending."
Katara nodded and reached over to put a hand on his shoulder. "Calm down. We'll work it out."
Aang sighed and sat down.
"Sokka has a point. I can probably teach you the stuff I know." Katara tried her best to cheer him up.
"You'd do that?"
Sokka ignored them from then on and pulled out the scroll he took from Shyu. The content had him wondering about Zuko's past. The older teen had to know certain information to get in contact with the only Fire Sage who still was an ally of the Avatar. Zuko sometimes gave backhanded facts about himself. Now Sokka was asking himself just how many of those were true.
Fact One: Zuko is from the Fire Nation. That much had to be true since the guy was a firebender
Fact Two: Zuko came from a high standing family with connections. How else would he know as much as he did? He'd probably had tutors.
Fact Three: He knew Fire Nation tactics and strategies. Sokka could easily recall all the things Zuko had taught him. How to fight and avoid the Fire Nation had been one of the first lessons they'd had.
Fact Four: Zuko didn't like the royal family. He'd never said it out loud, but it was obvious if one focused on the little things. Comments made in passing by and gestures he thought no one saw at the mention of the royal family.
The fourth fact was the one that boggled him and he didn't know why. It wasn't unusual to dislike the royalties of the Fire Nation. Most of the members of their tribe didn't like them either. Zuko was different though. It felt personal and he just didn't understand. It wasn't just Zuko. The rest of the ship's crew obviously shared the same kind of views.
Iroh would always look at Zuko's face when the topic came up. Well, more like his scar.
It didn't make sense. It wasn't like the Fire Lord personally burned him.
Katara waved a hand in front of his face and brought him out of his thoughts. "We need to find a good water source."
-.-
Zuko didn't know if he should be annoyed or resigned at his uncle's antics at this point in his life. The man had changed their course completely because of a missing lotus tile. That's why they were currently at a random port. Of course, his uncle needed to find a new lotus tile. It was always about the lotus tile. They really should just get several of them to prevent this from happening again.
At least they could pick up some supplies.
Zuko heaved up the giant wicker basket. They had ended up finding more than a few good bargains. It thankfully kept his mind occupied by other things than idiotic pai sho tiles.
Well, it did until an overly familiar voice called his name. It was impossible. The universe couldn't hate him that much. Zuko did his best to ignore it all. He wanted to get back to his shopping and get out of here. He definitely didn't need to get dragged into whatever mess they'd gotten themselves into this time. He was not prepared to deal with this today.
Zuko hummed happily as he caught sight of a stunning tea set. He had been meaning to get a new one. He did his best to forget the fact that his friends were being chased around by a band of pirates in the corner of his eye. It was not his problem.
It was getting increasingly difficult to convince himself of that.
"Are you not going to help your friends?"
Zuko took a deep breath before facing Iroh and Jee. They were both giving him identical stares. "No, I am no-"
-.-
"-are you not going to help your friends?" Zuko cursed under his breath. The Iguana Parrot had been following him so he hid behind a tree shake it off his trail. Against his better judgement, he went after his friends to figure out why they were being chased by pirates. At least it wasn't Zhao. That was the last thing he needed right now.
When Zuko finally lost the pesky creature he could continue on his way through the forest. He suspected the Gaang as Sokka named them had gone for a water source. So there he was looking for large bodies of water. Luckily he had a map and a general idea of where to go.
He kept going further into the forest and cursed his inability to stay out of his friends' business. He would much have preferred to run off and forget, but his stupid moral code wouldn't allow it. His friends needed him to get them out of trouble. Again.
The sound of running water brought Zuko relief. When he got closer to the water he heard curing that made him pause. He recognized those curses. A short distance from him Katara was hopelessly trying to waterbend.
-.-
"Hey Sokka! Sokka... Sokka..." Aang poked Sokka in a desperate move to gain his attention. "Sokka."
Sokka opened his eyes slowly. A grimace overtook his face as he felt the poking. Aang still didn't stop. "What?"
Pause.
Aang bashfully looked away from him which caused him to sit up. The airbender scooted away. Katara was nowhere to be seen. Of course... Sokka wouldn't be surprised if she had gone off somewhere to practice those waterbending moves in the scroll she'd stolen from the pirates. "It's night, Aang. That's when people sleep."
"I can't sleep." He moved so that he was sitting next to Sokka.
Sokka grumbled. "Of course you can't." He let out a yawn and plopped down on his back to look up at the starry sky. He motioned for Aang to do the same. "Still wondering about Zuko?"
Aang let the question sink in before answering. Zuko was the reason he couldn't sleep. He had to get Zuko to teach him firebending, but how? Especially now when Roku had given such a warning. He needed to master all elements before the end of summer and he was nowhere near ready...
Sokka finally interrupted Aang's worries. "Zuko hates using his firebending. He once mentioned that his sister was better and even went as far as to call her a prodigy. Apparently, his father favored her and didn't bother hiding it."
"What about-" Aang covered the left side of his face with his hand.
"Not my story to tell." Sokka shrugged. "Zuko may be a firebender, but it's clear that he understands the destruction it brings along. You should have seen how the tribe reacted when we saw him bend that first time to save Gran-Gran. It's hard to say who was most terrified, us or him."
Silence fell before them once more.
"We may be in a hurry, but give it some time." Sokka turned his head to look at the younger boy. "If worst comes to shove we'll just kidnap him. I talked with Iroh and agreed with the plan."
"HE AGREED TO WHAT!"
-.-
Zuko wanted more than anything to get away from Katara's never-ending question or more accurately demands answers about his reservations of teaching Aang firebending. He did everything he could think of to avoid answering. At last, he had enough and went to Sokka.
Sokka understood why he was holding back some information and didn't want to open up old wounds.
"Why can't you help train Aang?" Katara asked for the second time in less than five minutes. They were standing at a river and she was unintentionally waterbending. Her emotions were quite clearly out of control.
"Look." Zuko ran his fingers through his hair as he considered his next words. "I can't do it, but you could try to find my old master. If he believes Aang is ready to learn then I'll teach him. Otherwise, I won't until I'm sure he's ready."
"Promise?"
"Promise." Zuko agreed and reached over to pluck the scroll from Katara's hands. She yelled out, but stopped when he shot her a glare. "You are not only risking your life for a scroll, but also your brother's and Aang's."
Katara huffed and crossed her arms. "I never had anyone to teach me how to bend properly and Aang needs to start learning."
"There you are!"
Katara and Zuko turned to see the pirates coming towards them. Katara prepared to go on the offense.
"How much?" Zuko held up the infamous scroll.
"What make you th-" One of the pirates started to say but was cut off when the Captain smacked him to shut up.
"300 gold pieces." The captain gave him a devious smirk.
"It was 200 gold pieces!" Katara spluttered.
"350." The smirk only seemed to grow.
Everyone watched as Zuko bartered for both the scroll and the freedom of the Gaang. She had to give it to Zuko. He had skills. He and the captain kept trying to outdo each other.
"150! That is my final offer!"
"Make it 200 and you'll leave my friends alone."
"DEAL!"
-.-
"This is mine now. Mine. I am going- didn't you learn anything? Don't steal!"
TBC.
