Following a Hunch
Lane didn’t trust her own memories.
Those from her time with the Traveler were blurry, disorganized things that slipped away the moment she got too close. They were feelings, and as much as they still compelled Lane to follow them, there was little she could do with feelings. They were hunches, and she could chase them as far as she wanted, but without proof, they meant nothing.
Then there was the one that said the ‘side effects’ weren’t nothing. Lane flexed her hand and eyed the paper cut she’d gotten earlier. She’d begun to write down every injury she received, what she’d done before, and after. Perhaps that was a bit obsessive, considering it could be nothing. But if she could only find a pattern...
She put those thoughts aside for now. Noemi was waiting on her, and was too perceptive not to notice if her friend (were they still friends?) was distracted. They hadn’t met in person since her ‘death,’ brief hellos at the masquerade aside, and while there were still discussions they needed to have about the book, this meeting was purely personal. Yes, Lane had the Traveler’s (broken, confusing) memories of the vampire, and messages she could read, but that wasn’t how she liked to operate, she was finding. Lane wanted their friendship to be hers.
And so: night coffee in one of the quieter cafes, after a long day of work for them both. They could commiserate on that. It would spark the conversation that might otherwise end up awkward, circling back to Noemi’s exclusion from the group. There’d been enough of that going on in the other woman’s life, Lane figured.
All of that floated around Lane’s thoughts like tiny pool floats she could nudge aside to  make room for important issues. Like the fact that she was being—had been, for some time—followed.

Oh indeed: much too fast, much too young, taken in the prime of their life by the looming specter of national franchises and with them my favorite drink with the honey-sweet foam with the little sprinkles. Star****s does not offer the good sprinkles, nor does it offer precious little marshmallow bunnies come spring.

A Visitor
Jax was terrified by the time she got to Noemi’s ‘house’.
The alien had never seen buildings this tall, sterile, or shiny--nor had she any context for cars, or electric lights, or having to travel across open spaces on ground as hard as rock. Luckily her phone spoke to her and told her where to go, and didn’t yell at her or rush her when she hid in doorways or under the sparse fenced-in trees. All she’d had to do was ask it where Noemi was. This, at least, was a good thing Earth had to offer.
The building was like the others--no open holes to enter or exit. All locked up like a nutshell. Jax craned her neck up and looked at its impassive front. Squares of glass reflected streetlights like winking eyes.
She walked up to the door, and not knowing what else to do, slapped on it with her palms. She also closed her eyes so that she didn’t see the upsetting overlap two sets of limbs.

I’ve been here before.
Eyes peered out at her from all angles, glowing in stark white.  Voices.  Laughs.  She could see a figure shrouded in darkness looking at her coldly.  No bit of humor in its face.  This regulator wanted her dead.  She wanted her gone more than anything.  Why? Why why why why why why
Wake up, you piece of trash.
We’re not done with you, traitor.
Charlie sat up abruptly covered in sweat, her uninjured arm balled in a fist while her other laid limp next to her.  Her breathing was labored as she peered around the hospital room in confusion.

So one of the best parts of working at my campus library is that this old dude died and his family donated his books and movies to us but they never went through them before giving us anything and it was fairly normal except for the shit ton of vintage necro pørn and because it was a donation my school couldn't just get rid of them and we're considering creating a class based on vintage pørnography and I swear it's the weirdest shit

Yes! I quite enjoy them! I think phones with games on them are so much nicer than phones without games on them, especially because you can carry them around if you'd like to talk to someone and you can simply turn the ringer off if you wouldn't like to to talk to someone.

The internet is wild and mysterious! I think that sometimes there needs to be less of a market for things on the internet. :-)
Tumblr media
In life, people will always sling cruel barbs at you even if you are confident in your abilities and presentation. They'll try to tear you down. Cut you. Mock you. You must simply hold your head up high and prove to the world that you're better -the best, nothing but the best- and everyone else will one day crumble into dust while you gaily march onward. You can also throw drinks on them if you have a drink you're not terribly invested in consuming but I suppose you can't do that over the internet, can you?
Tumblr media
Excellent! I would allow you to watch me. Thank you. At least someone has faith in me. =)

Darling, I am very excellent at using that website, even if my associate keeps changing my homepage to Bing for some godforsaken reason that's simply beyond me. I can find many things on the Internet, many. I'd like to find less things, actually. I've found enough.

Not part of the series, just a cute character I had stored away! Should I edit her design and add her to the series?

Pep Squad
Lane stood silently just inside the mall entrance, sipping her coffee (finally; after the disaster this morning had been) and waiting for Noemi and her friend to arrive. Pepper. The Grey who lived in hiding.
Ideally, the two of them could drag their friend from the funk she seemed to have fallen into. Lane was... not the best at such things, but she could be a reassuring voice backing the other alien’s enthusiasm.
Hm. Not the other alien. The other woman, or the Grey. Lane closed her eyes as she sipped, feeling the migraine come on. Not again. Not today. She kept her expression in its usual calm neutrality; there was no reason to give Noemi reason to worry.
