Loras Tyrell x OC Male
Technically an Self-insert
Tumblr media
He knows which universe he’s in, from his last life he remembers pirating the three-season shows and having to look away from the screen every other second due to his confusion about what he was seeing. As if he knew he shouldn’t be watching for his age.
He was supposed to be killed as an infant but instead, he was safe by his only uncle. Turns out he wasn’t the only reincarnated but so was his half-brother Jon Snow known now as Jaehaerys III Targaryen. Then there is also his uncle Viserys III Targaryen and his aunt Daenerys Targaryen. His aunt is technically the third of her name but apparently, it only counts if the person before you was a ruler. There has never been a female Targaryen ruler so therefore she is considered the first of her name.
The four of them are reincarnated and they have this theory it’s due to their Targaryen blood. It’s not that far of a stretch after all Targaryen can command dragons, walk through fire, and have visions of future or past events.
All of them seem to be immune to fire but Viserys is the only one who feels pain from it and sensitivity to light. He and Daenerys have visions but Daenerys focuses on the past while his focus is on the future. Jaehaerys has a mental link to all of them. He’s practically the medical version of a phone call.
Viserys who is the oldest among them whether in this life or the last will never stop being flabbergasted on how long it took for them to realize they all had past life memories. Maybe it's an old age superiority complex Aegon doesn’t really know. Though Aegon and Daenerys died very young in their last life so they don’t really feel that deep connection to the past like Viserys and Jaehaerys are.
Aegon has this theory that their memories aren’t due to their Targaryen blood but due to their connection with the world they’re in. In one way or another, they recognize this world from one source of media to another from their worlds.
In Daenerys’ World, it was a cartoon for kids about dragons and royalty. In his world, it was a three-volume novel with a three-season show about Dothraki and Sullied fighting against the hierarchy. Though really it was just a premise for NSFW content instead of any actual real plot.
In Jaehaerys’ world, it was a comic about ice monster zombies that could only be killed by fire from a dragon fire. And due to the Targaryens being extinct the nation as a whole was screwed. There were even plans in the making to adapt it into a post-apocalyptic movie of what happens to the ancestors of the main characters' kids in the comics who manage to get over the seas.
Then there is Viserys’ world, the one with the most complex version of the story. When Aegon first asked Viserys about it he got a 10-hour rant about how much it sucked and that he hated it except for the Dothraki and Dragons. Although Viserys seems to hate this world he is oddly very passionate about, with his so-called ‘hate.’ Then again there is a very thin line between love and hate.
Aegon is just happy that the craziness of this world seems to be in a calm trance. Though he knows it won’t last for long but he’s content. He is to be crowned soon by his uncle, no longer needing to hide his true identity or the person he loves.
Everyone knows that Lores is his lover and future spouse and there is nothing they can do. It’s nothing new among Targaryens and it doesn’t matter as long as there is a blood heir. Which shouldn’t be a problem for him since apparently his cousin Rhaegal was birthed by Viserys. The number of secrets among the Targaryen bloodline will never cease to amaze them.
It might take a while before he and Loras have children, if anything it’s shocking it hasn’t happened yet. From how often they fucked like bunnies in the heat but then again he needs to bottom for it to happen. Ageon is willing to do it but it will take a while for him to get Loras to agree since his lover loves Bottoms and never thought of them ever doing it the other way around.
Sighing, Aegon turns around to snuggle Loras’ body under him while giving a kiss to Loras' bruised nape from all the love mites on it. It’s too early for him to worry about other events he’ll deal with later. And not on his own for he no longer needs to hide who he is whether be it his identity or who he beds.

hi there! i'm eliza (she/her) & at the moment i'm craving either some harry potter, asoiaf, or some hunger games rp. it's like its 2013 again! i'm 25+ (sigh!) so unwilling to write with anyone under 21 under any circumstances, and I write on discord, generally on private servers.
i like to double up in terms of canons - if i write your preferred canon, it would be great if you could write mine - and if we do mxf ships I prefer to double up on those too. I am comfortable writing all genders and dynamics, I just find that having two ships means we both have equal investment! in terms of ocs I have noted a couple of oc scenarios I would like to explore, but in general I prefer to stick faiiiirly close to canons.
i am definitely a 2-3 paragraphs type of writer and i love to ramble on about our characters, novel/novella style!
below i have listed a ships i'm craving, with my preferred role in bold*, as well as some canons I just love writing in any scenario! *if neither is bolded you can take your pick, it means I love writing both of them <3 italicised means I would literally kill for you to write this with me. i'm open to canon x oc or canon x canon, as well as mxf (generally my default but not always!), mxm, or mxf.
I'm very easy going (just silly really) and would put my activity at about a 6/10 - I won't be on discord every day but will absolutely check in with you if I think I'm going to be away from my phone or extremely busy. while I don't have any triggers per say, I prefer to plot and write a little together before plunging into full blown smut, and I like nsfw scenes to have a plot purpose (most of the time lol). needless to say i am extremely anti-jkr. these characters are ours now <3 harry potter: fred weasley x alicia spinnet** (i would probably cut limbs off for this) sirius black x marlene mckinnon sirius black x remus lupin sirius black x ofc oliver wood x katie bell or ofc george weasley x luna lovegood george weasley x angelina johnson narcissa malfoy x lucius malfoy draco malfoy x astoria greengrass alastor moody x anyone fabian prewett x anyone
lily evans x james potter draco malfoy x harry potter ginny weasley x harry potter ginny weasley x pansy parkinson bill weasley x fleur delacour dudley dursley x anyone magical for his redemption arc any minor character ships where we can develop backstories! (just off the top of my head for characters that I love to develop: michael corner, padma patil, justin finch-fletchley, theodore nott, terry boot, susan bones, blaise zabini)
the hunger games: finnick odair x annie cresta haymitch abernathy x effie trinket coriolanus snow x whatever poor girl he decides is going to be his wife gale hawthorne x madge undersee
gale hawthorne x johanna mason ('i could fix him' 'well i could make him worse') finnick odair x ofc (happy to play either role) original tributes in the arena, tribute x mentor if we come up with something good! haymitch x his girl from home (rip babe) asoiaf (book canon): robb stark x jeyne westerling or ofc robb stark x oc if we double! luv writing him sansa stark x jon snow (post parent reveal) jon snow x satin loras tyrell x renly baratheon ellaria sand x oberyn martell catelyn stark x jaime lannister iykyk catelyn stark x roose bolton nooo don't give me the skin of my enemies you're so sexy aha x davos seaworth x stannis baratheon arianne martell x anyone at all! sansa stark x willas tyrell robb stark x margaery tyrell edmure tully x margaery tyrell tbh you can probably persuade me on most canon x canon crack marriages. i got fully invested in lyanna x jaime lannister once so now nothing will surprise me <3 if you're interested in any of these pls like this post so I can reach out and provide my discord!

21+. She/Her. Looking for 21+ writing partners for four of my current biggest fandoms right now.
I write on Discord or through Tumblr messages but do like to stick to Tumblr for plotting. I write in third person, past tense and around 2-4 paragraphs. Replies won't happen every day because I work full-time. I'm usually, however, able to get them out in 2-3 days. I like canon x canon pairings the most but am not opposed to canon x OC. I'm open to MxM, FxF, or MxF pairings for canon x canon. For canon x OC, I only do MxM or FxF. I like canon and canon divergent plots. No AUs that are way out there. I'm fine with doing romantic or platonic pairings. Although, I do lean towards the former. I'm also okay with writing NSFW/smut things but I do like a healthy dose of plot to be involved.
I'll be writing my main muses for each fandom (I may be willing to write some other characters) and list some of my favorite ships (I'm definitely open to discussing others).

Knight of the Forest - Chapter III
Tumblr media
“It’s not fair!” Margaery screeched, throwing her arms up in a tantrum as she stomped her foot angrily, ignoring Garlan who was trying desperately to calm his sister down but couldn’t get close due to not wanting to be swatted by her flailing arms. “I hate father! I HATE HIM!”
Willas sighed from where he was confined to the seat. After being crippled from the waist down a few years prior at a joust, he was unable to move from room to room without the assistance of Garlan or even teenage Loras who would assist him by use of his wheeled chair.
“Margaery, calm down,” he said firmly.
Margaery slapped Garlan’s soothing hands away from her and flipped her hair out of her face angrily, “Five years ago father sent Maya away because “her powers were attracting unwanted attention” and now he is sending Lillia away!”
“It was not entirely father’s doing,” Willas pointed out. “Lady Arryn was the one who finalized the decision to send Lillia to Kings Landing.”
“But Father was the one who ratted to Lady Arryn!” Margaery pouted, spitting as she yelled angrily. “He told her that Lillia wasn’t a “perfect lady” and you can rely on Lady Arryn to imagine since her imagination is so broad! Sure, Lillia is not the fine lady who walks around in gowns all day long, talking about stitching and husbands! Sure, she is better at hand-to-hand battle axe combat than any of our knights and sure she is not the best at sewing but that does not give father the right to talk trash about her and then suggest that she leave for Kings Landing!”
“You know she has a point,” Garlan pointed out to his brother. “Father does have a habit of feeding the lambs to the lions. But at least Lillia will have Evelyn there. She just recently moved there with Sansa and Arya when she was wed to Jaime Lannister.”
“I still cannot believe that her father agreed to that marriage,” Margaery huffed. “But that is beside the point and nevertheless, Evelyn left Kings Landing. Didn’t you hear?”
Both brothers frowned and shook their heads. “After Ned Stark was killed by Joffrey, Arya ran away and shortly afterwards, Evelyn disappeared. No one knows if she is dead or if she managed to escape the clutches of Cersei Lannister. Sansa is still stuck there poor thing.”
“Well then at least Lillia will have Sansa even if she was better friends with Evelyn.” Garlan soothed.
“Hey… as anyone seen Loras?” Willas inquired.
When Lillia finally located Loras, she wasn’t sure what she was going to say to him. She had been living with the Tyrell family for almost six years now and needless to say, her little crush on the youngest Tyrell had grown into something that Lillia knew was more than a crush… possibly even more than love. However, the only inclination that Loras gave her was that she was a friend in his eyes. Not once had he ever shown an interest in her other than his sword partner and playmate.
That was just how teenagers were right? The girls were the ones to fall in love with the one guy who was completely oblivious and thought nothing of her other than a friend. This was what was running through Lillia’s head as she gently knocked on Loras’s bedroom door.
When she got no answer, she assumed he must be asleep and hoping to possibly leave a note on his bed before leaving, she cracked the door open. That was when she realized her mistake. Loras was not asleep but rather sitting up on the edge of his bed, his front to her but his body bent so far in half that she couldn’t see his expression. His knees were pulled up, arms crossed over the caps of his knees and his head pressed into his arms.
“Loras?” Lillia whispered, watching as light from the hallway flooded the pitch-dark bedroom.
The boy’s head snapped up, obviously not having realized her presence or possibly even her previous knocking. Lillia took a full step back in shock at the expression on Loras’s face. His usually rosy freckled cheeks were stained with red lines from hot tears, his bright golden eyes were puffy from extensive crying. His unmistakably slender lips were puffy and trembling as more tears continued to flood his eyes but now, he was more shocked and embarrassed at the predicament that Lillia found him in to continue crying.
“I’m sorry…” the girl stammered, realizing that she had just invaded his privacy.
She stepped back through the door and moved to close it when she muttered to herself. “I am disgusting.”
Of all times to be thoughtless and barge into Loras’s bedroom was when he really needed privacy. Not only had she invaded his private den but also embarrassed him by finding him in that state.
As she closed the door behind her, she missed the confused and evidently hurt look on Loras’s face… unaware that only the last part of her muttering had reached Loras’s ears, making it sound like she had said: “Disgusting”.
Flashback End
"And Loras did not say goodbye?" Tommen asked.
Lillia shook her head, "For the past 3 years I have been corresponding with Margaery, Willas and Garlan but Loras has never answered a single one of my letters. I do not know what happened but... by leaving, I broke whatever it was that we had."
The young boy nodded, resting his plump chin in his hands as he thoughtfully stared out of the bedroom that Lillia had occupied for almost three years. "Maybe he was sad that you were leaving and thinks that it would be better to forget you. I mean, if I was really close with someone and the chances of me seeing them again were near to none, I would try to distance myself not only to protect my feelings but theirs."
"But that's the thing," Lillia sighed. "If he is trying to protect my feelings, he is doing splendidly because my feelings cannot get any more hurt."
Tommen smiled sadly at the girl who had become like a second sister to him since Myrcella had left for Dorne. "Well, since my uncle Stannis has died... and Margaery is coming to marry Joffrey... who knows, perhaps you can see him again."
Lillia nodded, "If the rumors about him aren't true..."
"What rumors?" the boy inquired.
"That he prefers men."
*********
“Ser Jaime!” Lillia called as she rushed into the blacksmith shop just outside the manor. “Bron said you wanted to see me.”
Jaime lifted his head from where he had been bent over the blacksmith table, trying to draw something with his left hand. He smiled at the girl before holding up what he had sketched ot the blacksmith.
“Do you think you could make that?” he asked the burly man, “out of this?”
Jaime placed a small block of metal on the table and both Lillia and the blacksmith gawked in shock.
“Valerian!?” the blacksmith gawked, “Where did you come by that Ser?”
“My father gifted me a valerian sword and the remaining metal from it,” Jaime explained before looking at Lillia.
“I need to talk to you about something,” the man whispered to her, “Come with me.”
Lillia followed the man into the back of the blacksmith shop before he began to pace back and forth.
“This will probably sound absolutely ridiculous to you but…” Jaime started, stroking his shaven face thoughtfully, “How do I put this?”
Lillia chuckled, “Ser Jaime, my childhood best friend can manipulate water and the boy I love since forever is actually into men so… very little sounds strange to me,” she assured him.
Jaime sighed, thinking over the best way to explain himself to Lillia, “Do you ever… have an instance where you see something that is so real, you think it could be real but its…” he started, only for Lillia to finish.
“Just a dream?” Lilli asked. Yeah, totally crazy in the eyes of someone who receives visions of three girls in the bodies of fire, water and wind. Totally crazy.
“Not dreams but…. Glimpses… visions,” Jaime replied, stopping his pacing, “I saw a vision of a golden dragon… small… but I felt like I knew it somehow and right aver the vision cleared, this picture… this idea kept appearing in my mind like a memory aching to be set free… to be remembered. The picture made no sense to me but I could do nothing but see to it that whatever the picture represented… saw the light.”
Lillia raised her eyebrows and had to blow a puff of air to get rid of a blond curl that had fell in her eyes. “Why did you tell me all of this Ser Jaime? Where did you get the idea that this was connected to me…. and how do you know I wont speak of this to others and then you’ll look like a psycho?”
Jaime strode over to the petite girl and grasped her shoulders, “Because when that picture appeared in my head… your face kept flashing before my eyes…. As if it were you telling me to do this.”
This definitely intrigued the girl who tilted her head to the side inquisitively, “What was the picture you saw Ser Jaime if you do not mind my asking?”
Jaime sighed, “A necklace… but… it was almost more of a second skin than a necklace… almost engraved into the skin, it was so delicate and intricate… and yet so deadly and simple. A twisting vine, wrapped around your neck with leaves of metal fanning out from the vine, standing against your skin… and… for a moment it almost looked like the leaves were real.”
Lillia frowned, “Why do you say that?”
“Because I could have sworn I saw the leaves move,” Jaime whispered.
The girl’s eyes widened and her face almost paled as a confused look crossed her round, rosy face.
“That is impossible…” she muttered. “Only land… and earth feeding life will be summoned… wait…. Ser Jaime,” She declared, breaking out of her mumbling. “Is metal a form of earth?”
Jaime furrowed his brow before he shrugged, “It is a type of stone I believe… an ore… why?”
The girl was out the door in a split second before the man could even blink, wondering what could have been so urgent as to require the girl’s hasty departure. Meanwhile, Lillia came sprinting into her room, checking under the bed, in the closet and even behind the curtains to make sure she was alone before locking her bedroom door. Rushing to the flower pots she had placed on her bedroom balcony with special plants for specific reasons, she plucked twenty petals each from the lotus, copal, anemone and rosemary. Plants before rushing back into her room, closing the balcony door as she went. Now completely alone, Lillia carefully sprinkled the petals on the floor in four individual sections before planting herself amongst the rosemary petals. She was just about o begin when she remembered something she had learnt the last time, the hard way. Rushing to a nearby flower pot, she scooped a few handfuls of soil before sprinkling the dirt amongst the rosemary. Dusting off her hands and looking at her preparations with satisfaction, she stood back over the rosemary and shut her eyes, breathing in deeply. She tried to picture it… the petals floating into the air of their own accord… moving with purpose… slowly she cracked her eyes open and she saw that it was happening. The petals were suspended in the air! First the First the copal petals burst into flames and the unmistakable tall but slender figure with short hair and glowing red eyes appeared. Next the lotus petals began to drip water like a perspiring brow in the heat of summer before a second figure came to light, the features made clear by the texture of the water’s shape, depicting long ringlets and a love face shrouded by a mask. Last but not least, the anemone petals began to spiral out of control, blowing around in a circle like a torpedo ripping through the land before it burst into an array of air and petals and what was left was a petite, short haired, calm faced girl made of air. Lillia grinned.
“You all made it!” She chirped.
“You caught me at a good time,” The water figure of Maya stated, “I was bored out of my mind!”
Lillia smirked before looking at Evelyn’s fiery burning, stoic figure, “Eve, if I have to lie about you to Ser Jaime one more time, I may have to renounce my elemental claim on this joining.”
Evelyn shook her head, “He cannot know Lils. Especially when I am under the training of Brisingr.”
“How is that going?” Nanteza’s airy figure inquired. “I have to watch my cousins cracking whips at dead men’s heads all day long.”
“It is well,” Evelyn replied calmly.
“He is harsh, firm but a good teacher and if I want to tap into the deep fire within me, I need to understand which elements represent what parts of me.”
“You’re lucky,” maya sighed. “You get to go on adventures while I am locked up here like a wild circus beast, having to hide behind chainmail and masks to keep people away from me.”
“I told you,” Lillia pointed out. “I can come visit.”
“Like hell!” Nanteza cried, interrupting Evelyn and Maya who were about to say the same. “That is no place for your Arryn.”
Lillia stuck out her lip in a pout before she remembered why she had summoned the pinnacle of life in the first place.
“Listen… do any of you remember that prophecy we saw… next to the one about us?”
“Oh the one on bonds?” Maya inquired. “Yeah… erm… four souls shall bind their hearts and minds to those of their beloved but the bond shared shall not be with their mate of the soul but with their spirit’s kindred.”
“Did any of us even figure out what that meant?” Nanteza inquired.
“yes,” Evelyn answered. “It is about our soulmates… for me it is Jaime… stating how our minds, souls and hearts will be bound with our soulmate but the “bond” will be shared with our spirit’s kindred… kindred spirits… like best friends.”
“So… like our soulmates will have a best friend in one of us?” Maya asked. “Why did you ask Lillia?”
Lillia shrugged, “Just that… Ser Jaime told me today of a vision he had of a gold dragon… and after the vision, he had this thought … or feeling to have something made from valerian steel and said that I was a part of the picture he saw…”
“Then you must be Jaime’s spirit’s kindred,’ Maya pointed out, “I wouldn’t be surprised if that makes Loras your soulmate considering that he and I are close siblings.”
“Oh shut up!” Lillia grumbled. “besides, he’s into men.”
Nanteza, Maya and Evelyn shared a knowing look before they one by one disappeared and all that was left were. Pile of petals. Lillia looked down at the petals beneath her feet and wasn’t surprised to find that in their place were twenty little rosemary blossoms.
“Yet again. I need to figure out how to prevent that!”
Due to her dropping soil on the floor, the rosemary hadn’t taken root in the floor like last time but the soil so Lillia easily transplanted them and cleaned up the mess. A few hours later, a package appeared outside her door and when she opened the wrapping, there lay a necklace of pure valerian steel, a twisting vine with fanning leaves.
“Now… to learn how to move metal!”

From your Secret Santa
Hi, Butterfly! I’m looking forward to putting together a gift for you! Sadly I am terrible at art, but I can do fic, meta, or a fanmix.
You mentioned a few different pairings and characters that you were interested in (in addition to SanSan) and I thought I’d ask what kinds of headcanons/ideas you might want to read about for, say, Brynden/Shiera, any of your Dunk ships, House Hightower, and House Blackwood. (Also, I do actually want to know about Loras/Pylos because that had never occurred to me before.)
Cheers,
Aliandra
Hi Aliandra!  I’m looking greatly forward to whatever you can do, no worries, I don’t need art, lol. Let me think… for most of these other ships, I don’t tend to have that many ideas/prompts because they’re not my OTP and therefore I don’t obsess over them (although I do love to see things with them!), so you can be flexible. I generally just enjoy the characters just being with each other, being themselves. If that means Bloodraven and Shiera are being snarky and schemey, that’s fine. If it means Brynden can drop his “I know everything and I plan for everything and I’m nasty and evil and don’t care about anyone’s feelings, fear me” facade around her and she can drop the “I’m the cold ageless beauty who gets off on playing with men’s hearts” facade around him and they can just be nerdy together (and yes, still snarky about those who deserve it), that is also fine. :)
Mind you, “just being around each other” is a bit of a difficulty with Dunk’s ships as he … isn’t with them, so in his case you’d probably need to do either him nostalgizing, or an imagined future reunion (possibly angsty?). Or maybe if you go in the fic direction, something giving their point of view of the events in their original interactions? Or this is possibly where meta or fanmixes would be the best choice, not a fic. You can check out my D&E headcanon post and other tags for the characters/series if you want more inspiration there.
House Hightower and House Blackwood… I just think they’re neat. :)  Though note Hightowers in their former (c.Dance) scheming role don’t interest me that much, I much prefer the Hightowers as sponsors of the Citadel, the Old Man of Oldtown Leyton and his daughter Malora the Mad Maid researching spells at the top of the Hightower, and other fun magic things. (Oldtown and the Hightower are very old and very weird and that fascinates me very much.) As for the Blackwoods, they’re so goth they were born black(wood). Their aesthetic is just so… *poetic cinema*. And the giant dead weirwood with all its ravens is just so fucking cool. (My Bloodraven interest overlaps here, for obvious reasons lol.) And Hoster Blackwood is this adorable tall gangly teenage nerd, and his dad Tytos is so… silver fox goth daddy with his amazing armor and “magnificent” raven feather cloak…. and I love the way they stay Old Gods worshippers in the south (do I vaguely identify with this because I’m Jewish? maybe), and them staying Stark loyalists as long as possible was also nice (yeah I know that’s GRRM just setting them up as the faces to the Bracken heels, but still), and I like them very much.
As for Loras/Pylos, I think I started thinking about it around the time Joshua Cairos’s FFG art came out? Maester Pylos is just so soft and thoughtful-looking there… and I added that artwork to the wiki and ended up rewriting and expanding Pylos’s whole article, and was reminded about how he was the one who gave Davos the letter from the Night’s Watch – and note how he knew it was important and serious but when he tried to tell Stannis about it, Alester Florent dismissed it as foolish, so as soon as the opportunity came as part of his teaching Davos to read (:heartkermit: he’s so encouraging and not patronizing or anything about it, too) he tried a different tactic… and Pylos also teaches Shireen and Edric and Devan, treating them equally despite their wildly differing statuses… and also he helped Davos with the plot to send Edric to safety even though he knew he could be executed for it… anyway, I realized Pylos is just so genuinely good, it’s lovely to see in ASOIAF. And then I realized, that since Pylos was left behind on Dragonstone when Stannis left for the Wall (probably technically a punishment for him for being involved in the Edric plot), and when Loras rushed the Dragonstone gate to take the castle for the crown (and free up the Redwyne Fleet to defend the Reach from the Ironborn) he was shot and battered and received hideous burns from boiling oil… he would’ve been brought to the castle maester for treatment. (Like, yeah, there’s Tyrell maesters there too, but they would need all the help they could get.) And so I just sort of got into my head, a sort of hurt/comfort / nurse his wounds / help Loras recover both physically and emotionally from GRRM Bretan Braith’ing him, and heck, from Renly’s death too… complicated by the fact that Loras is technically Pylos’s enemy complicated by the fact that a maester owes fealty to whoever controls his castle… kind of ship. I think someone else thought about it around that time, but it is an exceedingly rare pair. But one I have vague hopes of becoming canon anyway? I suppose we’ll see how things are whenever GRRM shows us Dragonstone again.
Anyway, whatever you want to work on for my gift is fine with me! I hope this helps you decide. :)

Fandom: Game of Thrones Pairing: OC x Sansa Stark Chapter: 14/? FF.net link: Here Description: Daveth Baratheon is the eldest son of King Robert Baratheon and Queen Cersei Lannister, the only one of four children she actually bore her lawful husband. A natural-born prodigy at a young age, his keen intellect and swordsmanship are ranked as one of the best in Westeros. But to make it through the Game of Thrones alive, one must be ready to navigate through dangerous waters. The difficult challenge, however, is to do it without compromising your own ideals.
At Renly Baratheon's chambers…
In a small room in King's Landing, the Master of Laws Lord Renly Baratheon sits shirtless in a chair with his lover Ser Loras Tyrell, who is also shirtless, kneeling beside him lathering thick cream to shave Renly.
"Lord Stark's lucky he still has a head," Loras remarked.
"Robert will rant for a few days, but he won't do anything," Renly replied. "He adores the man. Still, I've got to give my nephew credit for talking back to Robert like that."
"You're jealous," Loras teases before bringing the blade close to Renly's chest.
Renly sees the blade. "Are you sure this won't hurt?" he asks worriedly.
"Only if I slip," Loras answers.
"And you prefer me like this?"
"Mhmm."
Renly remains motionless as he continues to keep his eyes focused on the razor-sharp blade as his chest is getting shaved.
"If you want hairless, maybe you should find a little boy," Renly said.
"I want you," Loras countered.
Renly sighed and shook his head. "My brother thinks that anyone who hasn't been to war isn't a man. He treated me and Daveth as if we're spoiled children."
"Well you know how the Queen would react," Loras points out. "She'd tear down the realm before she'd let her son fight."
"Maybe you're right," Renly conceded. "Still treats us like a spoiled child, though."
He turns and notices Loras slyly grinning at him.
"Oh, and you're not?" Renly mocked. "Loras Tyrell, the Knight of the Flowers? How many wars have you fought in? Oh, and how much did your father spend on that armor of yours?"
"Hold still," Loras said annoyed.
Renly sat motionless as he continued his tirade. "All I ever hear from Robert and Stannis is how I'm not tough enough, how I squirm at the sight of blood."
"You did vomit when that boy's eye was knocked out in the melee," Loras points out.
"His eye was dangling out of the damn socket!" Renly protested.
"He shouldn't have entered the melee if he didn't know how to fight."
"Easy for you to say. Not everyone is such a gifted swordsman."
Loras shook his head. "It's not a gift. No one gave it to me. I'm good because I work at it – every day of my life since I could hold a stick. The same could be said of your nephew Prince Daveth, though," he said – still remembering the jousting competition between him and the Oathkeeper, how tough an opponent he was and the only one to unseat him.
"His accomplishments are overrated anyway," Renly stated. "I could work at fighting all day, every day, and still never be as good as the both of you."
"Yes well, I guess we'll never know," Loras rolled his eyes. Finished with Renly's chest, he wipes him off and raises his arm so he can shave Renly's armpit.
"Everywhere?" Renly asks surprised.
Loras nods. "Everywhere. So… how did it end up? The Targaryen girl will die?"
"It needs to be done, unpleasant as it is," Renly confirmed. "Robert's rather tasteless about it. Every time he talks about killing her, I swear the table rises six inches."
"It's a shame he can't muster the same enthusiasm for his wife."
Renly chuckled briefly. "Daveth said the exact same thing," he frowns for a moment. "Robert does have a deep abiding lust for her money, though. You have to give it to the Lannisters, they may be the most pompous, ponderous cunts the gods ever suffered to walk the world, but they do have an outrageous amount of money."
Loras looks up at Renly. "I have an outrageous amount of money," he points out.
"Not as much as the Lannisters," Renly states.
"But a lot more than you," Loras counters.
Indeed, out of all the noble Houses of the Seven Kingdoms, the top two wealthiest families are the Lannisters and the Tyrells. House Lannister is the richest due to their vast amount of gold mines, while House Tyrell is the second richest due to their crops since the Reach is the most fertile region in the realm and helps keep the people of King's Landing fed.
"Robert's threatening to take me hunting with him," Renly continued.
Loras raises his eyebrow. "The Prince isn't going with him?"
Renly shook his head. "He suggested he'd hold court for a few days until his return. Last time we were out there for two weeks, tramping through the trees in the rain, day after day. All so he can stick his spear into something's flesh!" he sighs. "Oh, but Robert loves his killing. And he's the King."
"Hmm… How did that happen?"
"Because he loves his killing and he used to be good at it. Before he got all fat and lazy, that is."
"Do you know who should be King?" Loras asked.
Renly appeared startled. That question seemed to have come out of nowhere.
"Be serious," he finally spoke.
"I am," Loras stated. "My Father could be your bank. I've never fought in a war before, but I'd fight for you."
"I'm fifth in line!" Renly argued.
"And where was Robert in the line of royal succession?" Loras stated. "Daveth is your nephew, yes, but he's also half-Lannister and never backed down when it comes to issuing threats. Harsh ones, I might add. Who do you think he'd fill the court with?"
'Daveth wouldn't do that… would he?' Renly thought. He knew how Daveth earned the nickname "Oathkeeper" and the methods he used to acquire it. That line of thought disturbed him.
"Daveth is an unknown," Loras continued. "Joffrey is a monster, Tommen is a child…"
"Stannis?" Renly asked.
Loras scoffed. "Stannis has the personality of a lobster."
"He's still my older brother. Besides, even if I wanted to, half the Stormlands would be divided between me and Daveth. He's my nephew. I can't be King."
*NICK!*
Renly gasped as he felt a sharp pinch under his arm.
"What are you doing?!" he exclaimed in surprise, noticing the blood slowly trickling down his flank.
"Look at it," Loras pointed at the cut.
"You cut me!"
"It's just blood. We've all got it in us. Sometimes a little spills. If you become King, you're going to see a lot of this. You need to get used to it. Go on. Look."
Renly hesitantly did as his lover told him, and looked at his life's fluid before Loras cleaned it up.
"People love you," Loras said. "They love to serve you because you're kind to them. They want to be near you."
Loras took Renly's hands and lifted him up to eye-level.
"You're willing to do what needs to be done, but you don't gloat over it. You don't love killing," Loras grinned as he began undoing Renly's trousers. "Where is it written that power is the sole province of the worst? That thrones are only made for the hated and the feared?"
As the final laces came undone, Renly stood naked before Loras as the Knight of the Flowers cupped his lover's cheek, pressing his lips against Renly's.
"You would be a wonderful King."
Loras then took Renly to bed, where the two proceeded to have sex. In that moment of intimacy, Renly thought over Loras's suggestions.
At the Red Keep…
The past several weeks have been nothing but a living hell for the Crown Prince. His father's outburst at the Small Council, Eddard Stark's apparent resignation, and now a fight erupted in the streets involving Lord Stark and Ser Jaime Lannister. A City Watchman informed Daveth that the dead Stark and Lannister bodies had been removed; though that did little to quell the fears of those who witnessed the whole ordeal. One of Daveth's contacts in the city, Bodrin, whom the Prince appointed to represent the smallfolk population in King's Landing, informed him that the arrests caught the attention of his grandfather Lord Tywin Lannister of Casterly Rock; the Old Lion had been gathering his forces to prepare siege Riverrun in response to Catelyn Stark's abduction of Tyrion Lannister.
Luckily by that time, Daveth had already sent ravens ahead to both his grandfather and Lord Hoster Tully – demanding that both sides cease hostilities and stand down. Although word did arrive that Tyrion had won a trial by combat and was on his way to the capital, Daveth had to call in a lot of favors and pull a lot of strings with his contacts stationed in the Westerlands to placate his incensed grandfather. Lord Tywin, already an old man, was the richest and most powerful man in Westeros; commanding an intimidating yet very powerful presence, even Daveth had to be extremely careful when dealing with him. And the years have not made Tywin kinder. Only when Daveth's words his letter sent to Tywin detailing Jaime's questioning and subsequent release to the White Sword Tower did Tywin seem to relent. He only cared about his eldest son more than any of his children and still considers Jaime his lawful heir despite the younger Lannister's vows to the Kingsguard.
Daveth held up a letter sent to him by his grandfather. "Inform your uncle that attacking Ned Stark was stupid and that Lannisters don't act like fools," was what the message simply said.
"Talk about cutting it close…" Daveth breathed a sigh of relief.
"What did it say?" Bodrin asked.
"Lord Tully… and my lord grandfather have agreed to withdraw their troops, though I had to find a way to placate you-know-who. It's mostly considered a truce. My dwarfish uncle, Tyrion Lannister, is already on his way to King's Landing from the Eyrie."
"I've heard that he widow Arryn seems to be insane."
Daveth shuddered. "She was always an odd fish even when Jon Arryn was still alive, yet…" he stopped and pondered.
"My Prince?" Bodrin asked curiously.
"Yet she didn't show genuine remorse or grief when he did pass… and Lysa immediately took off to the Vale without attending her husband's funeral…"
"You don't think…?"
"All we have are theories at the moment. To find something incriminating, I need proof. Otherwise none of us can move a muscle without finding evidence of foul play."
"With your permission, my lord, I know some people willing to look into it for you."
Daveth looked at Bodrin for a moment. "Just get it done," he sighed. "But be as discreet as possible. Remember, there are eyes and ears everywhere in King's Landing."
"It will be done," Bodrin bowed. "Not even the eunuch or Littlefinger will track us down."
As soon as the commoner left the Crown Prince's chamber, Daveth had begun to walk towards the room where Eddard Stark was kept. He was being confined until King Robert and Queen Cersei arrived for questioning, yet Daveth still hoped to get some answers from him. Knocking on the door and making his way in, Daveth sees Eddard sitting on a chair looking up at him.
"Bed your pardon, my Prince," Eddard said.
"It's alright. No need for you to stand for me."
Daveth pulled up a chair and sat beside him.
"I won't lie to you, Lord Stark. Mother isn't happy about this. Father isn't happy about this. Both are already on their way here to question you themselves."
Eddard looked at the Prince. "And then what?" he asks.
"Must you ask? You know Father better than that. Once his temper cools down, he'll come to his senses. You're far too important to him to let go."
"Threatening to have my head on a spike was one way of putting it," Eddard mused.
Daveth shook his head. "He was just him blowing hot air; Father always needed someone to vent his frustrations on. I assure you he didn't mean it." He soon changed the subject and had a serious look on his face. "Now, I want you to tell me what in Seven hells happened back there. What happened between you and my uncle that ended with corpses littering the streets before I arrived?"
Eddard took a moment to take in what happened. Jory, his men… Once he explained his side of the story, Daveth analyzed his words.
"I see," he concluded. "Uncle Jaime was always hot-headed, but he does care deeply about Uncle Tyrion."
"He killed my men!" Eddard said.
Daveth narrowed his eyes. "You think that excuses what your wife did? Lord Stark, you don't simply just do that and not expect retaliation in return."
Eddard continued to press. "And what of the plot to kill my son Bran? The dagger the Imp got from Lord Baelish in a bet…"
"And you believe everything you hear?" Daveth scoffed. "I was at the tournament of my brother Joffrey's last nameday, Lord Stark. No such bet ever took place."
Eddard stopped talking and looked at Daveth, taking in what the Prince just told him.
"No," Daveth concluded. "I believe both the Starks and Lannisters are being manipulated by a third party. Whoever did try to murder your son clearly intended to blame House Lannister for the deed. I already have my contacts working to find leads so as to determine who is responsible. Lord Stark, why didn't you come to me?"
"You were just a boy, and you're Robert's son," Eddard said. "Your father and the Queen would've had my head if I had gotten you involved."
"Don't you think I don't know the risks entail? I'm already involved regardless. You love your children, I get that. All parents do. Well, I suppose some do. But you need to learn how to be more flexible and often compromise to achieve the results you want. Houses Baratheon and Stark always stood side-by-side, remember? And if we're to be bound by blood, the least I could do is provide whatever aid I can possibly provide so as to ensure your sons and daughters have a future. Not many these days get that chance."
Eddard looked at Daveth, examining the Prince closely before letting out a smile. "You really are your father's son, aren't you?"
"Ugh, please, Lord Stark, don't even say such things!" Daveth shuddered.
On que, the door opens and in comes King Robert and Queen Cersei. Robert wore a black velvet doublet with the crowned stag of Baratheon worked upon the breast in golden thread, and a golden mantle with a cloak of black and gold squares. Cersei wore a blue dress and a jeweled tiara in her hair. Judging by the discontented look on their faces, it was bound to get heated. Daveth and Eddard both stood up.
"Your Grace," Eddard bowed.
"Father. Mother," Daveth politely curtsied.
Cersei looked at her firstborn. "Are you alright, my son?" she asked, a hint of worry and scorn in her voice.
Daveth nodded. "I'm fine, Mother."
Cersei seemed to accept Daveth's words, though that did little to placate her. Robert, meanwhile, did not care.
"You did well to bring this to our attention, boy," Robert said bluntly. "But this doesn't concern you anymore. Leave us. Now."
Daveth looked at his father, slightly irritated before taking his leave. Not long after the door was closed, did things heat up.
"A man in your place should count himself fortunate that his head is still on his shoulders," Cersei declared. "Do you have any notion of what the consequences entail for endangering the life of my son?"
"I hadn't expected him to personally intervene," Eddard said, "though that didn't stop your brother from slaughtering my men."
"Do you know what your wife has done? What you have done?"
"She did nothing I did not command," Eddard replied.
Robert frowned and rolled his eyes. "Who'd have thought Cat had it in her?"
"My wife is blameless, Your Grace."
"I am not pleased, Ned," Robert grumbled.
Eddard took notice. "The Crown Prince already told me that."
"By what right do you dare to lay hands on my blood? To endanger the life of the Crown Prince?" Cersei demanded. "Who do you think you are?"
"I am the King's Hand―" Eddard told her with icy courtesy.
"You were the King's Hand―!"
"Charged by your royal husband to keep the king's peace―"
"You shall now be held accountable―"
"And enforce the king's justice―"
"Oh, will both of you shut your mouths?" Robert roared. "You asked him a question and he answered it."
Cersei subsided, cold with anger, and Robert turned back to Eddard.
"Keep the king's peace, you say. Is this how you keep my peace, Ned? Seven men are dead…"
"Eight," Cersei corrected. "Tregar died this morning, of the blow Lord Stark gave him."
"Daveth and the Old Bull told us everything. Abductions on the Kingsroad and drunken slaughter in my streets," Robert said. "I will not have it, Ned."
"As I told the Prince―"
"I said I will not have it! To hell with your wife's 'reasons.' We already got word that the dwarf was released after your little spat, so now you will make your peace with Jaime."
"He butchered my men. Am I supposed to forget that Jaime wished to chasten me after what he did?"
"My brother was not the cause of this quarrel," Cersei told Robert. "Lord Stark was returning drunk from a brothel. His men attacked Jaime and his guards, even as his wife attacked Tyrion on the Kingsroad."
"Quiet, woman!" Robert shouted.
"You know me better than that, Robert," Eddard said. "Ask your son or Lord Baelish if you doubt me. They were there."
"I've talked to them already," Robert said, incredulous. "He claims he rode off to bring the gold cloaks before the fighting began, but he admits you were returning from some whorehouse. Daveth told me that he, the Old Bull and several Watchmen went to stop your fight with Jaime."
"He gave his side of the story," Cersei replied, "and was released from his room on Daveth's condition that he informs the King first."
"Give me leave to bring him to justice," Eddard said.
"No," Robert said. "I want no more of this. Jaime killed three of your men, and you five of his. Daveth took it upon himself to end it. Now it's your turn to end it."
Cersei looked to her husband. "I took you for a King."
Robert's face was dark with anger. "Hold your tongue!"
"He's attacked my brother and abducted the other," Cersei's face was a study in contempt. "Jaime and Tyrion are your own brothers, by all the laws of marriage and the bonds we share. This man dishonors you with every breath he takes, and yet you stand there meekly. Perhaps I should wear the armor and you the gown."
*SLAP!*
Purple with rage, Robert lashed out and landed a vicious backhand blow to the side of the head. Cersei Lannister stumbled against the table and fell hard, yet she did not cry out. Her slender fingers brushed her cheek, where the pale smooth skin was already reddening. On the morrow the bruise would cover half her face.
"I shall wear this as a badge of honor," she announced with a hiss.
"Wear it in silence or I'll honor you again," Robert vowed.
Cersei stood to her feet and stormed out without a word, slamming the door shut behind her.
"See what she does to me?" Robert seated himself, cradling his wine cup as he takes a sip. "My loving wife. The mother of my children." The rage was gone from him now; in his eyes Eddard saw something sad and scared. "I should not have hit her. That was not… That was not kingly."
"Your Grace," Eddard said, "your son told me what he planned. Averting a war…"
"And now that little shit of an Imp is on his way back to King's Landing, I know," Robert pressed his fingertips against his temples. "Your wife's had her fun, now put an end to it before she decides to play it again. You hear me? Send a raven and put an end to it."
"And what about Jaime Lannister? What about Jaime?"
"I'm half a kingdom in debt to his bloody father!" Robert groaned. "I don't know what happened between you and those yellow-haired shits. I don't want to know. My son's right about this though: I can't rule the kingdoms if the Starks and the Lannisters are at each other's throats, so enough!" The king drained his cup.
Eddard remained standing. "As you command, Your Grace. With your leave, I will return to Winterfell and set matters straight."
"Piss on that! Send a raven. I want you to stay. I'm the King, I get what I want," Robert said loudly before lowering his tone. "I never loved my brothers… A sad thing for a man to admit, but it's true. You were the brother I chose."
Robert stood up, grasping one of the bedposts to steady himself and throws the Hand of the King's badge onto the table where Eddard stands next to
"We'll talk when I return from the hunt."
"The hunt?" Eddard asked.
"Killing things clears my head. Daveth'll be sitting on the throne while I'm away, and you'll be helping him. You'll hate it more than I do."
"What about the Targaryen girl―"
Robert groaned. "Seven hells! Don't start with her again! The girl will die and I'll hear no more of it. Put on the badge. And if you ever take it off again, I swear to the Mother I'll pin the damn thing on Jaime Lannister."
Robert exits the room, slamming the door shut behind him. Eddard picks up the badge; he was being given no choice again, it seemed.
At Vaes Dothrak…
Inside a large communal tent, a pregnant Daenerys Targaryen is centered around everyone and eating the heart of a horse. The Dothraki and a priest chant around her. Her husband Khal Drogo looks on in anticipation as she continues eating.
"She has to eat a whole heart?" Viserys asks. "I hope that wasn't my horse."
"She's doing it well," Jorah replies.
"She'll never keep it down."
At lot had changed between Viserys and his sister Daenerys. Ever since the incident in the hills, the relationship between the two had grown increasingly sour.
                                                    ooOoo
"You dare send this whore to give me commands?! I should have sent you back her head!" Viserys shouted angrily at Daenerys, having dragged Doreah by her hair through the camp and into Daenerys' tent before roughly shoving her to the carpet.
Doreah's face was bruised and her eye was red, indicating that Viserys had hit her repeatedly.
"Please forgive me, khaleesi," she cried. Tears fell down her cheeks as Doreah trembled in fear. "I only did as you asked."
"Hush now. It's all right," Daenerys comforted her handmaiden. "Irri, take her and leave us."
"Yes, Khaleesi," Irri obeyed and took Doreah out of the tent, leaving Daenerys alone with Viserys.
"Why did you hit her?!" Daenerys shouted.
Viserys snarled. "How many times do I have to tell you? You do not command me!"
"I wasn't commanding you. I just wanted to invite you to supper." She took him by the hand and drew him across the room. "Look. These are for you," Daenerys said as she presented Viserys the assembled gifts she made for him. Ever since their first spat she had tried to reconcile with her brother.
Viserys frowned suspiciously. "What is all this?"
"It's a gift. I had it made for you." Daenerys smiled shyly.
He looked at her and sneered. "Dothraki rags? Are you to dress me now?"
"Please," she begged. Why was he always so cruel? She had only wanted to help.
Viserys picked up the cloak and sniffed. "This stinks of manure," he exclaims and began throwing the gifts at Daenerys.
"Stop—"
He continued tossing them. "All of it!"
"Stop it!" Daenerys warned, finally out of patience and fed up with her brother.
"You would turn me into one of them, wouldn't you? Next you'll want to braid my hair."
"You've no right to a braid," she exclaimed boldly. "You've won no victories yet."
Viserys's face turned purple with rage. "You do not talk back to me!"
*SMACK!*
Viserys hit Daenerys across the face. As she falls to the ground, Viserys mounts her to keep hitting her as Daenerys fends him off with a chain.
"You are a horselord's slut," he yelled. "And now you've woken the dragon…"
*BAM!*
Before Viserys could strike Daenerys, she quickly grabbed a heavy chain of ornate gold medallions on the ground and swung it with all her strength, hitting Viserys in the face as hard as she could. Viserys yelled and stumbled backwards, releasing his grip. Blood ran down his cheek where the edge of the medallions had sliced it open.
Daenerys rose to her feet. "I am a khaleesi of the Dothraki!" she proudly proclaimed to Viserys. "I am the wife of the great khal and I carry his son inside me! The next time you raise a hand to me will be the last time you have hands!"
                                                    ooOoo
Daenerys keeps eating the heart, nearing the end. The Dothraki onlookers all chant in unison, getting louder and louder. The priestess is also chanting, louder and louder. Khal Drogo stares more intently at his wife, she stares back. The chanting grows louder, as does the priestess.
"Tell me what she is saying," Viserys said.
"'The prince is riding'," Jorah translates. "'I have heard the thunder of the hooves. Swift as the wind he rides. His enemies will cower before him… and their wives will weep tears of blood.'"
The eating and chanting intensifies as Viserys looks on in shock.
"She's going to have a boy," Jorah said.
"He won't be a real Targaryen," Viserys dismissed. "He won't be a true dragon."
As the chanting is at its loudest, Daenerys has finished with the heart. Everyone looks on in anticipations, she wretches forward, on the verge of vomiting. The chanting suddenly halts. Khal Drogo leans in and looks intensively. Daenerys holds everything in and sobs. Her hands bloody, she slowly sits up, keeping everything in as she gulps the final bite. The priestess begins to speak, Jorah translates directly for Viserys.
"'The stallion who mounts the world.' The stallion, is the khal of khals. He shall unite the people into a single khalasar. All the people of the world will be his heard."
Daenerys rises to her feet, speaking in Dothraski assembled in the room.
"A prince rides inside me! And he shall be called Rhaego!"
"Rhaego! Rhaego!" the room begins chanting.
As the chanting grows louder and louder, Drogo stands up and walks up to Daenerys.
"They love her," Viserys realizes.
The room's chanting gets even louder. Drogo hugs Daenerys as he hoists her up by her thighs, making Daenerys smile as she gets carried around the room.
"She is truly a queen today," Jorah exclaimed.
Jorah looks to his right towards Viserys, who has now slipped out. Inside Daenerys's tent, Viserys opens the container that holds her dragon eggs. He sighs and then puts them into a sack. Jorah walks into the tent behind him, blocking the door.
"Don't let them see you carrying a sword in Vaes Dothraki," he warns. "You know the law."
Viserys shook his head. "It's not my law," he protested.
"They don't belong to you."
"Whatever is hers is also mine," Viserys insisted.
"Once, perhaps," Jorah countered.
"If I sell one egg, I'll have enough to buy a ship. Two eggs – a ship and an army."
"And you have all three."
Viserys frowned. "I need a large army," he snarled. "I'm the last hope of a dynasty, Mormont. The greatest dynasty this world has ever seen, on my shoulders since I was five years old and no one has ever given me what they gave to her in that tent. Never. Not a piece of it… How can I carry what I need to carry without it? Hmm? Who can rule without wealth, or fear, or love? Oh, you stand there, all nobility and honor. You don't think I see you looking at my little sister, hmm? Don't think I know what you want? I don't care! You can have her! She can be queen of the savages and dine on the finest bloody horseparts, and you can dine on whichever parts of her you like! But let me go!"
Jorah continued blocking the door. "You can go, but you can't have the eggs."
"You swore an oath to me. Does loyalty mean nothing to you?" Viserys challenged.
"It means everything to me."
"And yet here you stand?"
"And here I stand."
Viserys and Jorah stare at each other for a moment, before Viserys drops the sack containing the dragon eggs to the floor. Jorah steps aside, unblocking the exit and permitting Viserys to leave.

Cassana
The city is alive with celebration. I wish I could say the same.
In the courtyard below they set up for the joust, usually, I enjoy sitting beside my father and watching but I know today's joust holds a different meaning. The son of every lord who means anything shall be competing and I know why.
I am of age to be married and everyone knows it.
I also know who is coming to the city, my grandfather. There is only one reason he's coming all this way and it's not for my sixteenth name day.
The man who rules my father wants to make sure the most important marriage to be made in seventeen years is one that will benefit him. To further House Lannisters power, not House Baratheons.
Which is why I had Renly ensure the Tyrells would be here. The Lannisters rule through my father but Renly and I know that we might be able to undermine Tywin through a marriage that will benefit House Baratheon, for the power to rest on our shoulders, not House Lannisters. But only if we are careful.
The door opens and I turn around expecting it to be Renly but instead it's Margaery armed with a bright smile and Tyrell roses.
"Oh Cassana, you look so lovely," she praises, kissing my cheek and embracing me warmly. I find a moment of hesitant ease in her arms before she pulls away, smiling as she examines the fabric of my Baratheon style dress. "So radiant."
"As are you Margaery," I say looking at the Tyrell rose who is ever beautiful, only growing more charming with age, more like her grandmother. Something I always keep in the back of my mind.
"Roses," she smiles holding them out for me. "You can never have enough beautiful things and I remembered how you loved the roses in Highgarden when you visited. How long ago was that?"
"Last year, Renly took me," I remember having very vividly learned why he decided to venture all the way to Highgarden, which was also the reason why Loras seems to visit the Red Keep so frequently. "And thank you, they are just as beautiful as I remember, as are you."
Her and I have known each other since we were children due to our closeness in age, with her only being a year or so older than I am. Due to distance, I can't say we've ever been around each other for long enough to become truly close in the way I've desired but there are times where I've called her a friend. But that was High Garden, in Kings Landing one can hardly afford to trust anyone enough to call them a friend.
"You are too kind," she laughs modestly as I put the roses into a nearby vase. "You're even more beautiful than I remember, it's a shame they keep you in this keep. You must visit Highgarden soon, perhaps Renly could convince your father to let you return with us after the celebrations have finished."
"It is not my father that needs convincing," I remind her and we both share a knowing look.
She and I did grow close during my last visit to Highgarden, we were growing quite close in a way I didn't think was possible until my mother ordered I return to the Red Keep. When I returned the only explanation she gave was that she didn't want me being influenced by 'that Highgarden whore.' The closest thing to a true friend and companion I've ever had. Even if I can never truly trust her.
"Perhaps I could convince her to allow me to go as a nameday present."
"Hopefully," she says taking my hand in her's as we come to look out my window. "I cannot imagine being cooped up in this keep, in this city."
Unfortunately, I can.
"Well, it seems that soon enough I'll be leaving this city for good."
She gives me a curious look. "And if you had the choice where would that be?"
"Somewhere beautiful," I answer truthfully as I come by her side to survey the men below and give her a teasing smile of two gossiping ladies. "They are all awfully boring, I must admit I had been hoping to see a Martell."
"Martell?" she exclaims before giving me a little smirk. "I don't think the queen would approve."
"Certainly not," I agree with my own little wicked grin. "The Dornish do have a certain appeal but I'll admit that I'd betroth myself to Loras just to go to Highgarden and get away from my mother at this point."
"Well my father has been looking for a bride for him," she considers as if the Tyrells hadn't been hoping for this match since I was born. "And no one would reject a princess's hand in marriage."
"Except Renly may have some objections," I remind her and we again share a knowing look. "As fond as I am of your family and your home we both know why it is not the first match I would desire."
"Which is understandable but ladies in our position must make the best of our circumstances, and my brother despite his affections is the most eligible man in the Seven Kingdoms," she reminds me as she takes my hand in hers smiling. "And we'd be sisters."
Loras is a decent man, regardless of his affections he is not to my tastes but he would be kind enough. Treat me well enough. And I would have Margaery as a sister. Even so, when I think of a life in Highgarden as its lady I still feel empty.
I give her a small smile and look out to the city. "It's strange, I hate Kings Landing but I think that if I left I'd miss it."
"It's your home," she says understandingly. "And it's not so bad."
"Don't lie," I try to laugh but humour struggles to reach my voice.
"Alright, but to be fair you can only see about five brothels from this window."
That does cause a genuine laugh to finally escape me and I feel at ease with her. But I never know if she is genuine in the kindness she shows, from experience any doubt is reason enough not to trust in her.
"It's a miracle I cannot hear them," I comment knowing there's one thing I won't miss about this city.
"Which is why you must come to Highgarden," she insists, stroking a piece of hair away from my face as she suggests "And speak to my grandmother. I know she'd be interested in exploring a match between you and Loras. And if not then we can enjoy ourselves."
There's something in her eyes that is certainly suggestive and I ask "Are you trying to court me on behalf of your brother Lady Margaery?"
"Perhaps," she smiles coyly in a way that is far less innocent than simply courting. "Is it working?"
"Perhaps," I tease back at her and her fingers are feather-light across my cheek.
"You know, most women don't know what they like until they've tried it," she says and there is no mistaking her intentions here. She knows that Loras doesn't have a chance in all the seven hells at being able to seduce me into marriage, but she thinks she just might.
Despite my curiosities, I've never dared venture near a man even if he did catch my eye. I look down at the men below and know that if I ever did desire to explore those curiosities with any that they'd no doubt end up dead in a jousting accident.
But a woman however is a different story entirely, something that would look innocent enough to the always watching eyes of the Red Keep. Something that would be almost impossible to prove if anyone did suspect anything other than innocent.
"Indeed," I agree, deciding to play along with her game. "Unfortunately for a woman in my position, it is difficult to be able to try anything."
"Which is unfortunate as sadly so many of us get to try so little before we're old and grey," she sighs but her offer is clear. "But if you were to come to High Garden then I believe you'd be satisfied with what you could try."
My curiosity might just get the better of me. "And what if I found myself inclined to try what I could before I am wed?"
Her lip curls upwards. "That can be arranged."
Before either of us can go any further the door opens and one of my handmaidens stands there looking a little pale.
"Princess, the Queen is here to see you."
Dread immediately fills me and I understand why the handmaiden is so pale.
I look to Margaery and know that my curiosity is certainly getting the better of me, but if she wants to seduce me into a marriage with her brother then I'll let her try.
"I will see you at the joust Lady Margaery."
She smiles as she courtesy's to me. "Princess."
She takes her leave and I take a moment to prepare myself, putting in a smile as my mother walks in with her head held high but she doesn't look as stern as usual.
"Mother," I greet with a polite half-curtsy.
"Look at you, you're all grown up now," she observes, frowning as she touches my loose black hair. "You definitely are your fathers' daughter."
"Well I definitely didn't get my hair from you," I reply in good jest but she only looks bitter.
She glances at my dress, yellow-gold as is it is the colour of my house, of house Baratheon. Its fit is loose and light to suit the weather, the neck of it low cut and my arms bare. "Highgarden fashion. I don't suppose you plan on changing, something with more fabric would be modest or red would look lovely."
"No," I answer, every conversation with her has always been a battle. If I didn't have my fathers will she would have me under her thumb. "Black and gold are the colours of my house, I am a proud Baratheon."
"Of course you are," she says stroking my arm warmly but her eyes tell a different story "It's a shame your father is out on a hunt instead of being here to wish you well on your name day."
I am no fool, my parents have never been happily married, my mother tries to keep us children from him as much as possible and he lets her.
He doesn't care much for Joffrey, Tommen of Myrcella, they look nothing like him but I have his black hair and blue eyes. I am the only one who resembles him. It is the very reason he loves me most and why my mother can hardly look at me some days. While Father favours me she favours my blonde-haired siblings, as awful as Joffrey may be.
But as much as I may look like my father I still have my mothers mind and I know what she is trying to do.
"He is celebrating in his own way, he will come to see me before the joust, as he always does," I remind her, hoping that I am right.
In my younger years, he'd sit me on his lap for all the lords and ladies to see but as I've grown older he's pulled away. In my heart I know it's not because he doesn't care, but because of my mother. As I've become a woman I've begun to resemble her in my facial structure and mannerisms and he's become distant because of it. He can hardly stand her and I've always feared the same fate would befall me.
It's not easy being the daughter of a king.
She gives me a small doubtful smile "Of course sweetheart." She then pulls out a parcel wrapped in red cloth "I had something made for you."
I unwrap the parcel and inside is a gold Lannister lion necklace, identical to the one she wears.
"You may be a Baratheon and you may look like one but you are a Lannister, never forget it."
How could I possibly forget?
"Thank you, I'll treasure this," I say politely as I set the parcel down on my table much to her displeasure.
House Lannister is the richest in Westeros but also the most cruel. If my mother isn't enough evidence of that my grandfather is. Due to their wealth people such as my father tend to ignore the horrors he has inflicted on innocents, like the Targaryen children.
But I've never been one to turn a blind eye.
"Uncle Jaime is busy preparing for the joust but he sends his regards, I believe Tyrion and Renly may be stopping by before the joust to see you," she informs me and I smile to myself at the thought of seeing Tyrion, my favourite uncle.
She sighs heavily as she walks to my window and looks down below to the joust being prepared.
"You're aware that this joust is different to the others?" she asks me stiffly.
"Of course," I answer knowing that I'm sixteen, it's time for me to be wed or at the very least betrothed. I should have been betrothed years ago.
Which is why the Tyrells are here, why Margaery wants to seduce me into going with her to Highgarden and marrying Loras, a princess is quite a prize for an ambitious house.
"Rest be assured it is simply a courtesy to the nobles, you will not be shipped off anywhere. Not like I was shipped off to your father."
I've been wanting to leave this city ever since I can remember, but as I admitted to Margaery I know that I'd miss it. Not the city itself perhaps, but the politics, the life of it.
Regardless, if I had the choice I'd go to the Stormlands but I know that I won't find a husband there, well they have a handful of young lords such as Beric Dondarrion but none of a high enough standing to be suitable. It has to be a man from one of the major houses and considering I'm the child of two of them it cuts my options.
Martell, Tyrell, Tully, Arryn, Greyjoy, Stark. Only a handful of them have men of age I can marry, or rather would be willing to marry.
There is Prince Doran's son Trystane who would be about a few years younger than I am or even Prince Oberyn, but he'd have to be about the same age as my Father which I wouldn't overly mind if it wasn't for his reputation. I have found myself wondering if the reason they've waited so long to betroth me is if they plan to wed me to an older man, and it's no secret the hatred he holds for my family. No better way to make alliances and settle disputes than offering a pretty young bride. Although from what I hear he has no trouble finding people to occupy his bed, men and women alike which isn't a problem but I would rather my husband share my bed and mine alone.
Which is the problem I have with Loras. It's not simply his preferences but the fact he is sleeping with my uncle, a problem which Margaery clearly sees as small but one I find difficult to overlook.
There's Edmure Tully who's heir to Riverrun, in his late thirties so while he is about my mother's age it's nothing too bad, but based on what I've heard about him, which is a lack of anything appealing, I'd rather not consider him as an option.
Jon Arryns son is just a boy so that's out of the question and my father would probably grab his war hammer if the council even suggested marrying me to Theon Greyjoy.
But there is one who I can find little fault with, Robb Stark.
My father loves his more than his own brothers, Ned even named Robb after my father. The friendship between our houses is the most solid of any in the realm but it hasn't been sealed through marriage. Robb would only be a year or so older, seventeen, as far as I know he's not betrothed. I wouldn't be surprised if father wanted us to wed, on the surface it seems like a perfect match but the council wouldn't be pleased, and neither would I.
Renly and I have long suspected the crown's debt to the Lannisters and the Iron Bank is far greater than Littlefinger let us believe. Which means he would certainly like for me to be married to the second wealthiest family in Westeros to settle that debt. And if it means my father becomes less dependant on Tywin and turns to the Tyrells instead then it would be worth the personal sacrifice I'd have to make.
I've long given up on the idea of love being a factor in who I marry. I want a marriage that will give me freedom, advantage, wealth, power. Something that a marriage with a Stark wouldn't give me, it would no doubt make my father happy but the last thing I want is to be shipped off to a frozen wasteland, expected to act as a Northern woman would. As honourable as the Starks may be I hear many Northerners are far from honourable, it's no surprise when one of their major houses has a flayed man for their symbol.
Which is why Highgarden is the next best option. Somewhere I would actually be free and respected. Somewhere I could still hold influence over the politics in this city.
"So if you have no plans to wed me to any of them, who to?" I ask curiously to see if she knows anything.
I've considered just about every realistic match and I've reached the point of telling the small council that I'll help them bloody choose a practical one if it means I can stop worrying about it.
"You are still a child in my eyes, you will not marry until I say so," she says fiercely and I know she doesn't want to let me go.
She wants me to be a Lannister, she wants to keep me here, trapped under her thumb in this godforsaken city. She was nineteen when she married my father, would have been married to Rhaegar Targaryen at about my age if the Mad King hadn't rejected my grandfathers' proposal out of spite. Instead, she ended up marrying the man who killed him.
"And what does father say about the matter?" I ask and any warmth she had disappears from her eyes.
"You are my daughter, his opinion doesn't matter," she scolds. The only other option that matters is your grandfather, but that will not be for a long time to come."
And with that, she leaves the room as quickly as she came. Only leaving me more determined to free myself from her.
Who knows, I may just attend a Small Council meeting to discuss the matter and sort this out for myself. I'm hardly begging to marry for love, I already have a handful of matches in mind that would be beneficial for myself and the crown.
I'm not asking for love, only freedom.
It's not long before there are more knocks on my door and one by one people come to visit me. Uncle Renly with fine cloths and silks in the Baratheon colour and style, promising that he will take me to the Stormlands sometime soon, however, he's certainly not opposed when I mention travelling to Highgarden.
He and Tyrion have always been the uncles I've been closest with. Renly often says if Robert was more like me then the realm wouldn't be so bankrupt. Which is exactly why we need the Tyrells instead of my grandfather.
Much to my surprise, some members of the small council come bearing gifts, Littlefinger with some books on law and other practical topics and the promise that if I ever need assistance that I can trust him. It was all I could do not to laugh in his face, he truly must think I am naive to believe that I would help him gain influence.
Littlefinger only serves one person, himself.
The Septa comes with Myrcella who gifts me with hugs and flowers, and with little Tommen who gave me a basket of sweets. They are at a truly lovely age, unlike Joffrey. I'm unsurprised and even relieved to see he hasn't come, he is only a year younger than me and I fear the day he comes of age.
Even Uncle Jaime comes by to wish me well much to my surprise. He's always been strange around us children, particularly myself but he is still warmer to me than my own mother. He and Tyrion are the only Lannister's that don't make me despise the family name. Well mostly Tyrion, there's always been something off-putting about Jaime.
The door opens and I expect Tyrion but I'm surprised to see Varys. "Happy name day Princess," he says with a respectful bow. "You are a woman grown now."
"My lord, you are a welcome sight," I say, accepting the books he offers me but I have more pressing matters. "I know this question may be a little upfront but as Master of Whisperers I figure that there's no one better to ask."
"Ah, you want to know which is those men down there you'll be marrying," he says knowingly but it's not a difficult guess to make.
"Oh I know it's none of them," I assure him. "But surely it's been a topic of discussion on the council."
"It has been," he admits. "I think Littlefinger has suggested every nobleman from Loras Tyrell to Oberyn Martell to Theon Greyjoy, each least desirable than the last. He seems to be leaning towards Ser Loras for Highgardens wealth but our late Lord Arryn said it was a matter for the king alone. It hasn't been discussed since his death but with your name day, I suspect it will be on the agenda again. I trust your uncle Renly can keep you updated on any developments."
"He could but I'd rather be a part of those developments," I reveal. "You hold significant influence over the council and your knowledge is trusted which is why I would like your knowledge on any suitors being considered and I will assist the council and my father in arranging a practical and beneficial match for myself and the crown."
He looks surprised, but he takes me seriously. "That can be arranged, Princess."
Just then the door opens and my first reaction is to look for my father but my eyes drift downwards to my favourite uncle.
"What are you two plotting?" Tyrion asks as he adds more books to the growing collection on my table. He was the one who drilled into me that a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone. Something I've taken very seriously since a young age.
"My marriage," I answer and he looks utterly confused.
"To who?"
"Yet to be determined," Varys says and gives us both a respectful nod. "I will inform you of the next council meeting."
"Thank you Lord Varys."
He leaves and Tyrion looks at me with raised eyebrows. "Marriage?"
"It's past time I was betrothed and it's hardly like my father is arranging anything, and you know my mother's stance on the matter so it seems that leaves it to me."
"Matter," he repeats to himself. "You have no idea how much you sound like my father when it comes to discussing marriage."
"Well it is a matter to be dealt with," I say knowing it's a practical matter, not a personal one.
But Tyrion knows better.
"I know you want to get away from your mother but there are more practical ways to do that than shipping yourself off."
"Well if I'm going to be shipped off I might as well have a say to whom," I point out. "My mother on the other hand says she's not going to have me shipped off like she was to my father."
"And speaking of your fathers," he begins and I go still "Don't worry he'll be here. He never misses a joust."
"He'll never miss a joust but his own child's name day is another matter," I remark bitterly.
He looks up at me and exhales heavily "Let me cheer you up, it's your name day after all. Come have a look at what I got you."
A smile comes to my face as he begins spreading out the books and I bend down to hug him. Out of all my family, I've always been closest to him much to my mothers' displeasure. Sometimes I swear it's him who's raised me, alongside Renly who is forever the irresponsible chaperone, who is more like a brother to me than an uncle.
But Tyrion has always been my rock in this family.
I pick up the first book in my reach and see it's a history of the Targaryens.
"Hide that one from your father," he says giving me a wink and I can't help but laugh. "You are the princess, it's only right you know the history of Westeros and the Targaryens were great rulers. The founder of your house was the rumoured bastard brother of Aegon the Conqueror, and your great grandmother was a Targaryen if I'm not mistaken, that was Roberts claim to the throne."
"I believe it was," I say knowing my history well, but also the reality of it. "Even if he did take the throne by right of conquest."
As I examine it he watches carefully "Wars will be fought over thrones but in the end, it's always bloodlines that solidify whatever is taken in war. You best know what your claim is."
Father goes into a rage whenever any mentions the Targaryen claim, he can't stand hearing the name Targaryen or considering that it's the reason he claimed the throne and not sheer strength alone.
"I do love history but it's not like I'll ever be Queen," I comment somewhat bitterly as I know just who the throne will go to.
"You never know," he says as I pick up a book on the history of the North. I put it aside and see a book on the Riverlands but aside from that most of them are all about the North.
"Have you suddenly developed an interest with the North uncle?"
"You should start reading up on it, after all in just a few days we'll start the journey."
"Pardon?" I ask at a loss for what he could mean.
"Oh your mother hasn't told you yet," he cringes as he pulls out a flask and takes a sip. "Well Since Jon Arryns unfortunate death your Father has decided to ask Ned Stark to be his hand."
Jon Arryns death was a shock to us all, and as for Ned Stark it's certainly news to me but I'm not surprised.
"My Father does love Ned Stark," I say fondly remembering the stories he would tell me about their adventures together during the rebellion. My bedtime stories from him were comprised of war stories, not fables.
"More than his own brothers that's for sure," he comments and I know it's true.
Renly and I are far closer than he ever was with his brothers, he was never manly enough for my Father and Stannis doesn't have much love in his heart or affection, he's a hard man. I pity his daughter Shireen, although she is a far few years younger than I am we were always close whenever I'd go to Dragonstone, it pains me that Stannis hides her away in that cold castle due to her affliction.
"Definitely," I agree as my thoughts wander to the North and what else the journey could hold but my thoughts are interrupted.
"I also have some Dornish wine but you'll have to hide it otherwise your mother will drink it all," he teases as he sets it down beside the necklace.
"Uncle?" I ask suddenly having a possibility dawn on me.
"Yes child?"
"I know the small council has not made a decision regarding my marriage but in your own opinion do you have any ideas?"
He swallows hard knowing that I'm not a child anymore, that I'm fully aware of what my duty as a princess is.
"Cassie, that is something you shouldn't worry about."
"I'm not worried, I just want to know."
I came to terms with my duty as a child, I knew even then that I'd either submit willingly or be dragged into a sept. Now I've taken it upon myself to have some control over my fate.
"To be honest I'm not sure but I am aware that your Father does have someone in mind, unfortunately, he doesn't often share his ideas with the small council."
That's when it dawns on me. "No, but he did with Jon Arryn. Varys told me that everyone that was suggested Jon Arryn dismissed."
Tyrion sits up a little straighter. "So Robert does have someone in mind, someone Jon Arryn must have known about."
We hear a commotion from below and dash over to the window to see father arriving with the hunting party in good spirits.
"Well, I suppose I'm about to find out."
~
Tyrion's gone by the time heavy footsteps echo through the hallway and the door bursts open.
"Father," I beam as he lets out a hearty, slightly drunken, laugh.
"Come here," he says opening his arms and pulling me into a tight embrace, almost crushing me. "Gods look at you, you're a woman now."
"I am," I say but I'm not going to interrogate him just yet, not when he's in such good spirits.
He hands me a parcel wrapped in fur "I got this for you on the hunt."
I smile knowing that it's his way of showing his love. He may leave to hunt but he'll always bring back the pelts for me. I open it and inside is a gold belt carved into the Baratheon style so it resembles the antlers of a stag.
"It's beautiful," I breathe in awe as I inspect the details, particularly the stones embedded in it that resemble those in his crown.
"Your uncle Renly suggested it," he says seeming proud of himself and I know that means Renly had it made and then gave it to him to give me. "And you should see about having that pelt made into a cloak, you'll need it."
"For the North?"
"Ah so you do know," he says pulling out a chair to take a seat. "Do you know why?"
"Uncle Tyrion told me you're going to ask Ned Stark to be your hand," I say, then feel my suspicions becoming truth. "But it's more than that."
"Aye," he confirms and I already know. "That old bastard's sat in the North for long enough but that's not all. When Ned and I were young we always joked about my daughter marrying his son. Then when we fought the Greyjoy's we agreed on it."
Despite suspecting my fathers' intentions I can only blink at him in disbelief. "If I've been engaged for nine years then why wasn't I or anyone else aware?"
He waves off my frustration and I just reach for the wine so I don't let any particular words slip out.
"All seven of those bloody gods and the Kingsguard wouldn't stop your mother from killing me if she knew," he says and I realise that is a pretty fair assessment.
"So you only told Jon Arryn so the council wouldn't marry me off to Loras Tyrell."
He looks surprised. "How did you know that?"
"Call it a good guess," I say knowing he'd just call me stupid for fretting so much when he's had this sorted for years. As I taste the wine on my tongue I finally allow myself to process just who I'm marrying. "Robb Stark?"
He nods his head proudly. "Aye, there is no better man that could marry my daughter, than a man raised by Ned."
I nod my head vaguely in an utter state of disbelief. While I knew my father would have of course wanted me to marry a Stark I never thought it would be practical. Never gave it any real consideration. I almost certainly thought I'd end up married to Loras, or if not him, then sold to the Martells. Robb has of course crossed my mind but I never let myself consider the option, I never thought the council would agree.
"I just never expected it," I admit. "I'm certainly not complaining but I've never seen the value in a marriage alliance between the North and the crown, they have no considerable wealth in either gold or resources, or anything of practical value?"
He again waves off my concerns. "Which is why the council doesn't know, I can hear Littlefinger now saying that we need the Tyrells wealth. There's a reason I have two daughters and two sons. There'll be a marriage there somewhere with the Tyrells but this is more important than wealth. If the North and the realm aren't united then the Seven Kingdoms falls apart, it is the backbone of this damn country."
I sip my wine as I try to make sense of this match. It provides no wealth but I know how important stability between kingdoms is with maintaining peace. I just can't shake the feeling of disbelief.
"I just can't believe I've been betrothed since the Greyjoy rebellion and you've never even told me."
He seems surprised that I'd be offended, that I've even given a thought to it.
"Well yes but no," he tries to articulate. "You see we never did any of that formal crap, even if we forget about your mother, if the council or Tywin knew I was betrothing my seven year old daughter to the Starks when the Tyrells were right there they would have found a way to put an end to that."
"I see," I say slowly, able to see the sense in his decision which Jon Arryn must have supported but still bothered by it. Bothered by the lack of input into the decision, that despite all my careful consideration of what would benefit the realm whilst giving me freedom, the decision was already made for me based on jokes made with a friend sixteen years ago. "So I will wed Ned Starks son."
"I could have wed you to Loras or some Dornish prince, they even suggested betrothing you to Theon Greyjoy but I told them over my dead body."
"Greyjoy I understand, Theon is a prisoner of the Starks but an alliance with the Tyrells or Martells would be far more beneficial for the wealth of our house and keeping the peace. We wouldn't be reliant on my mother's wealth."
It would separate us from the Lannisters, we would have wealth that isn't coming from Tywin. His influence would fade. I know Renly wants to distance our house from the Lannisters, if marrying Loras is what it takes for my father to not be ruled by Tywin then I'll do it.
But he just seems confused that I'm arguing, disappointed even as he frowns "I thought that marrying Ned's son would make you happy."
I go quiet as I realise my own happiness is something I haven't even considered since he told me, it's something I've rarely if ever let myself consider. It's never been happiness I've chased, but freedom and doing what is best for the realm. For my house.
"I never thought my happiness would be taken into account when deciding on my marriage. That it doesn't matter when practical decisions have to be made," I confess and he turns more serious than I've ever seen him.
"You are my daughter, my child. My own flesh and blood. Of course your happiness matters to me," he says with such resolve it shocks me a little. "Damn the realm, and damn what the councils thinks is a practical decision. It's time the houses Stark and Baratheon are joined as they always should have been."
As they always should have been.
Lyanna.
The woman my father loved, the woman he went to war for. The woman who died before he could save her.
It's a betrothal he could not fulfil, an alliance between our houses that was never fulfilled.
"If it is what you wish then I'll do my duty to our house."
He scoffs. "Duty. Who trained you to be so obedient?"
"Tywin," I answer. "He taught me to always put my house first."
"Tywin," he mutters under his breath as he takes a drink. "I suppose someone has to but this hour first. So listen to your father when I tell you that your duty is to try to be happy, to live for something more than duty. When I was your age I definitely wasn't thinking about duty. All I cared about at your age was girls and killing. You're father, the king, orders you to forget about duty. Forget what Tywin taught you. You're my daughter, now stop acting like a bloody Lannister."
The words sting a little but I know they're true. For so long I've focused solely on duty, to be the dutiful daughter and use that to my advantage. Now I know where I'm going, it's a marriage that will not help my house gain the independence it needs but perhaps my father is right. Perhaps it will make me happy.
"Is Robb like his father?"
I only met Ned once, during the Greyjoy rebellion. He was a kind man, a good man. I knew it because my father was a better man when he was with Ned. That rebellion was the last time I saw my father truly happy, ever since he's wasted away into what he is now.
"I haven't met him," is all he says and I know I'll have to find out by other means. "But it's time you got out of this city."
He pours himself some of my Dornish wine not questioning where it came from and chugs it on one go. "Good to see you're not drinking that watered down piss."
"When will the wedding be?" I ask wanting to know. It could be in months or even years.
"Soon," he simply answers. "I still have to talk to Ned to work out the little details but I plan on having it before Ned and I leave Winterfell. Your mother is hellbent on keeping you in this city so you'll be living in Winterfell."
"So I won't be coming back to the city?" I realise, my heart becoming torn between the joy of finally leaving this place for good and the fear of going somewhere unknown but fear has always excited me, given me a fight response instead of flight like a true Baratheon.
"God I hope not," he comments and his voice turns serious. "I mean that in the most loving way possible, I don't want you here with your mother. You are my daughter and I'll be damned if she makes you into a Lannister. Tywin can drill the importance of duty into you all he wants but you know what you're mothers like. She's got her claws in the rest of your siblings. You are the only one of them who is a true Baratheon."
"I'm a Baratheon," I promise him. "I've always been your daughter, not hers."
His eyes soften. Well soon you will be Cassana Stark," he says almost emotionally. "I named you after my mother, I wanted to make you Lyanna but Cersei wouldn't have it. I saw that black hair and gods you screamed when you came out of her, reminded me of a battle cry. You had that Baratheon spirit, if you were a boy I would have had you fighting with the best master of arms in the Seven Kingdoms unlike that blonde shit of a brother of yours. I tried to have him trained but he threw a tantrum when he was disarmed and your bloody mother wouldn't have it."
"Sometimes I wish I was a boy," I confess knowing that my greatest failure is my sex. "I always wanted to fight, I wanted to rule. I always wanted to be like you, not my mother."
He almost looks regretful. "I wish you were, you'd be inheriting the throne and not Joffrey. You are a true Baratheon unlike him, gods I don't know what went wrong with him. I remember when you were just a child and Joffrey was being Joffrey, I think he had tried to kill your cat or some bloody pet and you took it upon yourself to set him straight. You picked up that little toy warhammer and struck him true. Your mother was hysterical but I remember being so proud, you had my temper. Ours is the fury alright," he laughs to himself and as he looks around at the books and I notice him beating back his emotions. "Gods you would be a good King. You actually educate yourself, unlike your mother who thinks she already knows everything and you care, unlike me. If you were a boy then I'd probably abdicate and make you king, I've always hated ruling but with Joffrey as heir I can't do that."
I know he's always thought I was a better option than Joffrey but hearing him say it so proudly almost brings tears to my eyes. Almost, he's always hated tears, he thinks that they show weakness. I won't cry but I'll never forget his words.
"Thank you, Father," I say holding back tears, wishing more than anything that I was a boy but I'm not. That was my greatest misfortune. It's moments like these I begin to understand my mother who believes she would have been as great as Tywin if only she was a man.
"Sometimes I look at you and wonder what would have happened if Lyanna was your mother and not Cersei."
I go very quiet as he mentions Lyanna. My mother won't even speak her name but everyone in the Seven Kingdoms knows he loved her.
"Tell me," I say gently, taking this chance to see a side my father rarely ever shows. One my mother tries to convince me doesn't exist.
"I would have taken you on hunts with me, women from the Stormlands are fiercer than the other kingdoms but Cersei forbade the idea as barbaric, unladylike. The Stormlands and the North are similar as you'll come to see, both are wild countries with hardy people. I would have had you hold a sword or perhaps even a hammer if you were strong enough. I gave you a miniature warhammer when you were a child and you loved it but your mother took it away as it was no toy for a young girl. I gave Joffrey the same toy but he never even touched it, it was the one you hit him with. I wish I never let your mother have such a tight grip around your throat, she's been suffocating you since you were born."
"You aren't wrong," I admit and feel nothing but emptiness. "I wish more than anything that I could have had that life."
"But perhaps I can do this one thing right, I can get you out of this city, away from your mother and married to a good man, a Stark. You're clever, more competent than half my council. You might not be able to rule the Seven Kingdoms but you can rule the North for me, Robb will be warden of it someday and I know with you there the North and the realm can maintain what Ned and I built."
All my life my mother has tried to convince me that my father doesn't love me. I've always known it was a lie but I never knew just how much he had tried, especially in the beginning. But by marrying me to Robb he is doing the best thing he could do for me.
"Thank you, Father," I say gripping his hand tightly, wishing that things had been different. That the life he had imagined for me was the one I had lived but now everything is about to change.
"Now pack your things and don't tell your mother about this," he says giving me a small smile.
"I won't," I promise knowing just what she would try to do.
"And there's one more thing," he says looking at my wine. "You might want some more of that. Your grandfather just arrived."
My stomach twists and I clear my throat. "Then I best greet him before the joust."
~
It's only then that I change my dress to something more modest, it's only then I put on the necklace my mother gave me.
Tywin Lannister is here, I best present myself as I have to everyone these past years.
The dutiful daughter.
I find him standing in the throne room, the king without a crown.
"Grandfather," I say bowing my head in respect as he turns to look at me.
"Cassana," he says observing me carefully. "You're a woman now."
"I am," I smile pleasantly. "Thank you for making the long journey to attend my name day celebrations."
"Yes well I thought it was time I came to the capitol to arrange your marriage considering your father hadn't," he says stepping closer. "Or so I thought."
He looks at me expectantly and I know better than to lie. "I had not thought so either."
He narrows his eyes at me. "Were you aware of this informal betrothal your father had made with Ned Starks son?"
"No my lord," I say honestly. "However I was aware Lord Arryn turned down any matches proposed by the small council so I suspected that he and my father had something in mind."
He makes a satisfied sound then asks "And do you know why your father kept this hidden from everyone, including his own council?"
"So my mother would not intervene," I answer. "She still does not know of the betrothal."
"A sensible decision," he praises. "I did not think Robert was capable of such a thing but I suppose he knows how hysterical your mother gets over these matters."
"Indeed," I agree and he watches me carefully, the eyes of a lion stalking its prey.
"And how do you feel about this betrothal?"
I know he doesn't care for my feelings, he wants to know what I think of the decision logically.
"I feel that a more beneficial match could have been made but if my father wishes for me to marry Ned Starks son then that is my duty."
He seems surprised by my obedience, but pleased. "I remember when I told your mother she was to marry your father, she still hates me for it even though I made her a queen. Do you know what this match will make you?"
"I will be the wife of the Warden of the North," I answer. "My father has stressed the importance of a good relationship between the realm and the North."
"Very good," he says but looks curious. "However, if you could have chosen a match for yourself then what would you have proposed?"
Again, he does not care about my personal feelings. He's testing me.
"The Tyrells are wealthy and their son is only a few years older than I am not that that matters, they are Lords of the most fertile land in Westeros and the maester say that this summer is coming to an end. A union with them would ensure the crown had all it needed for the coming winter and enough wealth to support itself," I say and notice him listening intently. "I do not sit on the small council meetings but I am aware of my fathers spending habits and having wealthy connections certainly don't hurt, especially a union that will ensure their loyalty to the throne. However where loyalty is concerned the Dornish are a greater risk, it is no secret the discontent they bear for the throne and many still hold resentment for the events that occurred during my fathers' rebellion, such as Oberyn Martell. A royal match is not only a peace offering but also a promise of a renewed relationship between Dorne and the realm. Personally, I had always assumed I would be wed to either Loras Tyrell or Trystane Martell for practical reasons. I can see the practicality of a union with Robb Stark in regards to the realm but it seems my father made this match with his heart rather than his head."
"Hmm yes," he says sounding disappointed, not in me, but in my father. "You are an intelligent woman, you always have been. In fact, those two matches are ones I might have arranged myself if given the opportunity. A match with the Tyrells is certainly beneficial to the crown's treasury and one with the Martells could be the key to holding the peace. However, you have Myrcella still, while a second-born princess is not as much of a prize as the first it will have to do. Your father is the king, he may be a foolish one at that but there is benefit in you marrying a Stark."
While I am content with being used for a marriage alliance the thought of my little sister who has not even bled yet being sold like a broodmare does not sit well with me. It never has. But I do not let it show.
He looks to the throne. "You are the daughter of the two greatest houses in Westeros, and it is your duty to carry on our legacy. As a woman, you will not sit on any throne nor rule, but as the wife of a Warden, you will hold considerable influence over him and therefore the North. You will bear children with the Stark name and ensure the North stays loyal to the throne when Joffrey comes into power. While you may come to be known as Lady Stark you will always be Princess Cassana of the Houses Lannister and Baratheon, and your duty will always be to your family."
"And to the throne," I add to which he does not argue, only nods in approval. "Which is why I must do my duty as the throne and my family are one and the same."
House Baratheon, not House Lannister.
"Indeed it is. The house that puts family first will always defeat the house that puts the whims and wishes of its sons and daughters first," he tells me for the hundredth time. "Yet it seems you are the only other Lannister who understands this."
That comment surprises me and he again looks to the throne.
"My daughter is a queen because I married her to Robert Baratheon, yet if she had it her way gods know where she would have ended up. My eldest son joined the Kingsguard on a whim and serves as a glorified bodyguard while my youngest is a stunted fool who spends his time drinking with thieves and prostitutes. It seems only my granddaughter understands the importance of putting duty before all else."
My blood boils at the insults against Tyrion, the uncle who practically raised me. The one who taught me all I know. The one I love most.
Yet again, I do not let it show.
Not while I hold the favour of the most powerful man in Westeros.
"Which is why I will go North and marry Robb Stark, to do my duty."
The words taste bitter on my tongue. Go North, all the way to Winterfell. Away from my home and my family. Highgarden or Dorne I would have settled for, not Winterfell. I am a southern woman through and through, a woman who wants freedom.
I do not know if I will get that in the North.
"Yes but remember," he warns. "Your duty first and foremost is to your house."
Duty. My entire life has been consumed by my duty to my house and the throne.
The dutiful daughter, the perfect princess.
Reflected in the glass above the throne I can see her now with a Lannister lion around her neck.
And I despise her.

After I finish another chapter of my Jacob Frye x Male OC fanfic I am also going to start a Game of Thrones Renly x Loras fanfic where both survive (and Margery of course) because I’m not over both of their deaths - especially my baby Loras, he went through torture and didn’t even get to survive.

Game of Thrones Roleplay
21+/F. I’m looking to get some GoT roleplays started. I’m open to MxM, FxF, and MxF ships. I have a lot of them, and I’m willing to try out new ones so feel free to suggest any you have in mind. I ask that you be 18+ because NSFW stuff is bound to happen. I prefer Canon x Canon pairings but will listen to any OC ideas you have. I also prefer sticking to canon/canon divergent plots and don’t really do AUs.
Here are the characters I love to write as:
Alliser Thorne
Beric Dondarrion
Bronn
Cersei Lannister
Daenerys Targaryen
Davos Seaworth
Euron Greyjoy
Jaime Lannister
Jorah Mormont
Loras Tyrell
Margaery Tyrell
Melisandre
Myrcella Baratheon
Petyr Baelish
Randyll Tarly
Renly Baratheon
Roose Bolton
Sansa Stark
Stannis Baratheon
Thoros
Tywin Lannister
Feel free to send me a message or add me on Discord (Lindsay#7046), if you want to work something out.
