Preliminary Round: Final Fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Below cut
Alisaie
When she first shows up she's wearing matching outfits and wielding matching grimoires with her twin brother, but when she properly joins the game's main cast it becomes clear that she has swordswoman energy so incredibly strong that as a magical prodigy her chosen fighting style is "manifest sword out of aether and then hit people with it." She later simplifies this to merely wielding a sicknasty crystal rapier; As we know, fury and compassionate outrage are more powerful under when concentrated, which makes this tiny elf sword nerd a volatile pressurecooker of heroism. She's here to care about the little guy, make frustrated noises, and charge off to solve and/or cause problems, and truly what else is swordswoman energy about?
She wanted to use a sword so bad she summoned one made of pure magic, before a friend gave her an actual sword because he was worried about the toll summoning a sword made of pure magic was having on her, I love her and her brother so much. One of them is trans (they did the identical but different-gender twins thing). At one point Alisaie mopes because her and her brother didn't get new outfits when everyone else did. She then jumps off of a balcony because she saw an opportunity for adventure. Canonically doesn't like pickles on burgers (she put them on someone else's plate!! the scandal!!)
Lucia
she fights with a sword and shield— very classic paladin flavor. she’s achieved and maintained high ranking status for her combat prowess!; nobody is immune to hot lady knight especially when she is over six feet tall and in full plate armor tbh . easily the hottest defector from the evil empire in xiv. also she can pilot a big robot so that’s automatically a point in her favor imo
Mylla
She's the leader of the gladiator's guild. Gladiators are the class that use swords and shields. She kind of gets sidelined once it upgrades to the Paladin job for a bit, but then they went 'no Mylla and her guild are cooler than these idiots' and did a tournament arc
Lightning
She uses a Gunblade. A sword thats also a gun. Said to be very rare because it takes so much skill to use. Does lots of slashing and backflips. Later becomes Champion of A God and sword fights a guy for eternity. Later becomes champion of a Different god and uses lots of different swords; She is dramatic and has lots of character growth and is awesome.
Agrias
She has the class Holy Knight which enables her to use Holy Sword techniques as long as she has a sword equipped, which pretty much makes her the most powerful swordfighter your party can recruit (with the exception of Cidolfus Orlandeau, who has her skillset plus extra); You meet Agrias at the start of the game, and it's a few chapters before she joins your party permanently during which she gets quite a bit of screentime. This is significant, since Tactics lets you dismiss any character that's not the protagonist, and consequently the story is written to not assume you have any particular character in your party except for guests, meaning Agrias gets more story time than most characters that join your party.
Paine
starts out as a swordfighter with a big sword with a skull design. #girlboss; ffx-2 is a Wild Ride already but that they gave us a goth lesbian with a sword as our third party member was a great choice. i love her and also ffx-2. it's underappreciated.
Terra
Swords are one kind of weapon she can wield. Her ultimate weapon is known as Apocalypse.
Celes
She was turned into a Magitek knight by the Gestahlian Empire which she betrays. Swords are one kind of weapon she can wield. Her ultimate weapon is a sword known as Save the Queen.

I know we hype up how satisfying it is when characters get power-ups/transformations/weapons/upgrades that have this strong thematic resonance and are closely tied into, justified by and reflect their personal narratives, arcs and development and all that.
But you know sometimes it’s just really fun when the narrative justification is ‘a bad guy dropped this cool weapon’ and ‘we are in deep shit and need whatever power-ups and upgrades we can get’ and ‘it looks really cool’. Because then you get characters decked out in these hilariously awesome mashups of gear and abilities. Or maybe you really luck out and get BOTH XD
Take this guy for instance:
Tumblr media
His name is Leodrake, and for many long years he guarded the great sacred spirit tree at the center of the mystical Naturia Forest. Until one day, that just wasn’t enough.
Tumblr media
So with the help of all his forest friends as well as his new buddies the magic gem-powered order of fusion knights and the magitek star fairies from space, Leodrake got an upgrade:
Tumblr media
This is Leo, Keeper of the Sacred Tree. He is now super-charged with space-magitek armor that was crafted from the remains of an apocalyptic ice dragon that got possessed by an evil swarm virus. But don’t worry, the space fairies took care of the ‘evil’ part of that.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Leo’s upgrade wasn’t enough to stop the possessed shadow dolls created by a corrupted reincarnation cycle caused by the Gem Knights and the Star Fairies having to kill God (which isn’t actually as long of a story as you might think).
Tumblr media
So Leo got another upgrade, fusing with a gigantic rock tortoise to become Gaiastrio.
Tumblr media
And then, Gaiastrio would team up with a powerful druid beast tamer named Lara and her Spirit Beast partner, a giant fire cat named Apelio. Which led to Gaiastrio and Apelio fusing into one, which also super-charged Lara’s own power.
Tumblr media
And so, the three would charge off into battle for the fate of the world as Ritual Beast Ultimate Gaiapelio.
Tumblr media
Until Leo and Apelio would ultimately fall in battle against basically-Satan, defending their partner Lara and her companions/family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though their spirit remains with her.
Yu-Gi-Oh card lore is fun XD

As with Undyne's new magitek armour, a fan tried to design the armours. So, I gave it a shot. It didn't feel right if I (the authour) didn't try at least once. This design was very inspired by the Black Knight from Fire Emblem, and it was used as a reference. Speaking of reference, I had forgotten that anime styles tend to have super long legs compared to their torsos. It made the leg portion of this picture way bigger than the rest. Oops. Both armours debuted in Chapter 240 Some notes:
- He's supposed to look imposing and regal. - Unlike Undyne's design where her identity is obvious, Grillby's armoured identity is not as obvious. - Earpieces protect the ears and also mount communication devices. - The white etchings on his torso messes with sight, and primarily an anti-Seer defense mechanism. - Tried to emphasize on a knightly shape. - Finer details to be added with the help of a friend who's much more experienced with armours.

AU time again.
Maqali jen Ovinius. Dark Knight. Half Garlean, half Xaela Au Ra on his mother's side. Absolutely ginormous and stands about 7'7" due to his Garlean father. Hits his head on a lot of doorframes. He was subjected to horrific Magitek experiments that left him with talons and venomous fangs. He always had black sclera and glowing red limbal rings though. That's Au Ra for you, I guess.
The experiments also gave him the Resonance, an artificial version of the Echo. Unfortunately, he can't quite control it and often is subjected to other's painful memories and feels their pain (physical and emotional) as though it's his own until the memory fades.
He typically hides his Garlean eye under a circlet or helmet.

My brain is scrambled eggs at the moment but i am in a good mood so i will share with y'all a very whumpy idea that's actually in a story i am making! (which is actually a very small part of it but i still want to share it with yall).
Okay so setting? Medieval low fantasy but with magitek, main idea? aight so big daddy's from bioshock? Like the whole idea of people that had their skin and organs grafted into an armored diving suit? Yeah what if those were knights?.
TW: apart from usual pet whump or tropes associated with it (such as dehumanization, conditioning, etc), one prompt contains gore involving bugs, while i not go into detail it is still pretty fucked up, so if ya want to keep reading be careful, btw ask me to tag stuff because i have never written whump stuff before + i am writing this one my phone and can't put in the read more thingy
During war time high ranking officials within the army and people in the royal court conspired to try to make basically unstoppable killing machines by kidnapping peasants and nobels or soldiers that were suspect treason or other crimes, destroying their individuality, then grafting them into magically enhanced suits of armor to use as basically killing machines in the war, his plan went surprisingly smoothly, that's until the whole kingdom found out that people were being kidnapped and turned into the killing machine knights and also the war ended, so now they are stuck with non-human knight creatures that while super obedient are also far removed from human society and also cannot be killed due to how full of magic they are, aight sorry for the ramble, now onto the actual whump ideas
A knight whumpee who while they have lost their voice and most of their previous self personality they still have little memories of their past and the people they use to care about, which causes a lot of trouble for "caretaker" since they now have a scary human-shaped thing following them around and have no idea why (it's because whumpee is convinced that "caretaker" is a person that meant a lot to whumpee back when they were still human, plot twist they are not but hopefully stuff works out in the end)
A Nobel whumper's decides to get their hands on a knight whumpee to use as their personal punching bag, one idea i had is of whumper just prying open whumpee's helmet and since they have no skin just letting flies and maggots feast on their flesh for their own amusement, knowing that they cannot die until the magic inside of them is snuffed out, but not knowing that while whumpee cannot feel most sensory stimuli they do feel the flies and maggots eating their flesh away
A knight whumpee with the sweetest voice and most cheery demeanor who is nearly fully severed from human society and ideas such as self preservation or individuality and will not think twice about mutilating themselves or maiming others at the mere suggestions of their master, it's not that they are inherently evil or whatever their mind has just been destroyed to the point that blind obedience is a integral part of their existence, of course they also have a caretaker that is slowly regretting letting basically a feral animal get attached to them and then letting them into their own home and life, hopefully this also works out in the end but like, doubt
Two caretaker's, one a mage/doctor and the other a former soldier, knight whumpee is slowly having their magic core burn away meaning that they are slowly dying, the mage/doctor believes that it's a abomination against nature thats existence is painful and the only thing that should be done is to let them peaceful be snuffed away, while the former soldier is trying to convince them that while whumpee is not human anymore they are still a person and that they really should try to find away to light their magic core once again
A knight whumpee and an actual knight caretaker! Real Knight caretaker was a soldier that grew attached to whumpee during the war and basically became their handler, now that the war is over caretaker managed to pull some strings to let them get basically custody over whumpee, whumpee while still able to speak they prefer to communicate through simple gestures and even if they kept most of their humanity stuff feels very hazy for them, basically caretaker trying to reintegrate themselves and whumpee into their old town, and both of them sometimes regretting it but still trying to pull through
Okay writing this has just, drained my of all my creative thoughts but feel free to reblog and add in more ideas! I am going to pass out now

*barges in once again* Aight, remember Feng Shui?
Basically, one of Howie's Worker Bees goes missing into a portal to the Netherworld, and Howie himself has to go & find him, encountering various factions & individuals along the way.
The EE world is a sort of anomalous "fifth juncture", barely connected to the rest of time & boasting it's own kind of magic. This is kept up by the Painted Shield, a multinational order of magic knights who use Magitek to keep everything else out (also because using pure EE magic anywhere besides it's world of origin produces results that are volatile at best).
Howie will not stop until he can locate Benjamin & bring him home. It does not matter if he has to fight through sorcerers from the mists of Chinese history, demonic cyborgs from a dystopian future, or cyborg gorillas. He will find his Bee.
1) Sounds like a heck of a Jackie Chan-esque Kung Fu movie.
Secondly, the Painted Shield does fit naming conventions (in Taiga at least). We can imagine them being modeled after medieval knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail specifically.
Next. In the context of making a plot, we can imagine a conflict in the organisation on whether they should send a team to rescue Howie before he alerts the other junctures to the EE world's presence.
{The ghost in charge of finding new paragraph starters has been found to be lacking, and has been sacked} We can imagine Howie not unable to fight his way through practically the rest of time with limited information. Who needs dynamite when you have the personification of the fury of the working class?
{The ghost in charge of replacing the previous ghost is nowhere to be found and has therefore been sacked} Another idea for the plot is that the protagonist is part of the Painted Shields who's plot-based struggles revolve mainly running across the tightrope that is the Painted Shield's many, many concerns regarding exposure risk and what to do with any extra-dimentional intruders. And also finding Howie via the trail of destruction left behind.
{Due to a lack of suitable replacements, the ghost in charge of sacking the ghost who sacked the original ghostwriter has been sacked} Howie could even be a mid plot 'antagonist' whose joining of the protagonist's side via explaining each other's positions paves the way for a greater plot point of fighting whatever kungfu sect leader has kidnapped Benjamin the Worker Bee.
And finally, I can imagine the Painted Shields organisation being in competition with other magical authorities such as the Fleecities and similar institutions in the other EE countries. There will also be the question of if the Painted Shields brings in Howie's other worker bees since they should know their boss.
But if we are to discuss all this in context of making a movie, then we must consider the below:

I now officially feel horrible for thinking Setzer and Cyan needed to be fleshed out more in the first half of the game - if “fleshing out” means “we put them through even more trauma” then I take it back! XD
No really, FF6 really hits hard? Like, so far we have :
Cyan’s entire family gets poisoned in the war and dies in his arms. This continues to haunt him throughout 3/4 of the game, to the point where he gets possessed by a demon / esper (?) who feeds of pain and despair
Locke loses his lady love and afterwards searches for a mythical creature that can bring back the dead while preserving her dead body in a cellar
Edgar and Sabin had to grow up way too fast because their father died and they were basically surrounded by an enemy kingdom / imperial force
Celes is a knight which was experimented on with magitek stuff from her childhood on
Same with Terra, plus for Terra she was kidnapped AND brainwashed into a puppet for most of her life
Setzer loses his friend / lover / I don’t know what they got going on, then loses the entire party, and his will to fight
Shadow is haunted by his past to a point where he isolates himself, is shown to be drinking, and does not much care about potentially dying himself
Did I forget someone because I think I forgot someone, there’s so much trauma in this one.
GIVE THEM A BREAK SQUARE

The last of those who remembered his kin gave a final smile, the victor would write and tale and the vanquish become its villain. And so, at long last, he closed his eyes and took the rest he had longed for his entire existence. His head resting on the lap of a familiar companion, the smell of a familiar city, now a far off the dream, the last to enter his senses as he fell deep into the ocean below.
A smile crossed his lips, wielding the staff of his former teacher, he could finally do some use for this realm. Long had he studied and journeyed and now he understood his Master's words and the meaning of sacrifice for those he loved. All that time mastering magic and leaning over text paling in comparison and so the sounds of fire and the smell of burning magitek faded. And there on the other side of the river stood a masked woman who had gone before him. He faced her with dignity and pride and wished her sister well. Only the regret is that he couldn't see the sister off to a new journey, one last time. Oh to wander the Black Shroud and bicker with her about meaningless things one last time.
That was that. No more questions to be had. The answer had escaped him but it was always beyond him. The destruction of so much in search of something so simple. The end of the three worlds he knew in search of it and what had he to show for it? Nothing. Nothing but the gaping darkness before him and ocean flooding over his head. Nothing for all the strife he sewed as the memories finally began to rejoin in his mind. The contest of folly, the farce and performance he wove through his life times. And now, he could only rest as ill content as he had in the beginning. Until...he washed up on shore and found him cradled by countless, gentle hands. Plumed in blue and asking if he brought them apples with syrup, sitting in a sea of flowers dedicated to her return journey.
It was time to go. The armored deity beckoned. He had done as was required of him. He could do no more. And she could ask no more of him. Despite the circumstances of his birth, he fought to protect the weak. He had let his anger slip against another knight, crossed swords with brothers-in-arms, and threw open the gates to allow strangers into his city. But, he also offered them comfort with a cup of cocoa, swore loyalty to the future they were building and braced against the clutches of death itself to deliver them from the corruption of his holy city. He needed only follow the Fury which beckoned him now. And yet something tugged at him, he gave the armored deity a smile and shook his head, he had somewhere to be. She retracted her hand and nodded to him, without a second thought, he raced to the aetherial sea. He need only await for their arrival, so they may look to the stands and hear him cheer them on, so as to not lose heart.
He felt sore and weary, he lay on the ground in the meadows of a long forgotten kingdom. His heart brimming with happiness but his body weighed tonnes. He had thrown his lot in with a hero from another world, who in a twist in fate became a villain to save his own. He helped them forge a blade of light to banish the corruption that had doomed his lands. But just as one had been vanquished, another took up his corporal vessel and spent his good will for ill gain. After a great battle, it had been put to rest and him along with it. Now all he could do is lay in silence as a gentle wind caressed his brow. Spring was coming, the chill of winter subsiding, it was time to move out of the mountain town and back to a life of wandering the road and helping people. A gentle hand placed itself on his shoulder, a crafter hand for a bow on his side, a greater one roughen by years of sword wielding lifted him from his back, and one made for spell cast took his legs. He drifted off into the sea, carried by his friends. Where would they go next? He couldn't help but smile. Where wouldn't they go? As the water covered his head, he could only think about what he would give for ride through the sky on Seto's back once more.

You know if we wanna be perfectly fair to the show the games themselves show a portraial of the Church that is mostly negative
We've talked about Sypha being taken in by monks and accepted as a vampire hunter by the Church...but was she really accepted?
I mean she was forced to wear robes and hide her gender to throw people off from her being a witch (presumably), which tells me that the Church only "accepted" her as a weapon to be used, not as her own human being that would like to live free from persecution. At best you could say that the monastery that took her in was being genuine but there's nothing to imply that the larger institution saw her as anything more than a tool, especially given the witch trials at the time
Leon had to give up his title to go rescue Sera because otherwise the Church wouldn't allow to go because they were more interested in fighting heretics than go rescue a kidnapped girl
Vincent as a priest is depicted as being somewhat greedy and a little seedy
I'm pretty sure that both Isaac and Hector faced persecution and Rosaly was killed because of it
Yeah the Church often helps out against Dracula....but it kind of has to or face destruction
So I don't have issues with the show's CHURCH BAD from a principled standpoint since the Church has been, and in many ways still is, bad.
The issue is how hard and often it beats you over the head with it and how there isn't a single religious person that isn't depicted as either evil or stupid, not to mention characters like Trevor, who in Castlevania 3 was seen praying at an altar, being turned into a cynical atheist.
In the games God exists, the holy items that the Belmonts, who are presumably all believers, use draw their powers from Him essentially and we are explicitly told in the Sorrow games that Chaos and the Dark Lord exist as counterbalances to God. The games never seem to criticise the notion of believing in God, just the way said belief is institutionalised.
The only time God is ever called into question is by Mathias for Elisabetha's death, which calls into question the usual conundrum of "but if God is good why are there bad things?", and he feels like a fool for ever fighting for God...but he's also depicted as being in the wrong with how he....expresses his disappontment. Meanwhile Leon certainly is never depicted as being an idiot or in the wrong for simply being a believer, only for being a former Crusader Knight fighting heretics for the Church aka an often corrupt institution.
Hell Rinaldo, an Alchemist and technically heretic, also believes in God given his description of alchemy, and he's a 100% positive figure, just one who has seemingly suffered persecution by the Church as indicated by the way he approached Leon at first
I actually like the scene with "Blue Fang" where he says that God does not love people like the corrupt bishop and does not recognise himself in their actions. That is a much more nuanced take!
...where did it go past season 1?
You said everything, lol
We know that Church Bad. This is not a new take. Church Bad in real life, Church Even More Bad in the time period CV3/the show takes place, and Church Morally Questionable in the games too for all the reasons you said. Yes, in short, you can say that in the games God is good and so are the people who genuinely believe in Him like the Belmonts, but the Church as an institution has caused many problems. (although I like that it's the Pope himself who finds Trevor in CV3, when his family was shunned by common humans - there seems to be a misconception that it was the Church who exiled them)
NFCV simply doesn't add anything new, and beats on this point as if we didn't get it by the time the bishops all celebrate to themselves after executing Lisa. All the church people are evil, and the humans are purposefully kept ignorant by the Church, unlike vampires who are superior because they retain old knowledge and that's why Dracula has a whole magitek castle complete with electricity and teleporter instead of a creature of Chaos at his command. It's just boring. Berserk treated the same argument in a less "reddit athetist" way.
And I have mentioned the water-blessing zombie bishop a lot of times, I know, not my fault it's so fucking stupid. But it says a lot that fans point at it and instead of seeing it as a lore-breaking deus ex machina, they see clever commentary that the bishop is more "holy" as an undead creature possessed by a demon.

FFXIVMixedMay - Day 1: Introduction
A brief summary about my characters:
Jellal: Ala Mhigo born, former conscript and Magitek Engineer, the Miqo'te Seeker specialized as a sniper during his combat years but has since settled down a bit, gotten married and taken up bounty hunting. He has a gruff and stand-offish nature but is loyal to those he holds close and will protect them at all costs, even the annoys ones... His main vice is smoking, but he's cut back significantly thanks to his wife. Currently he has a workshop set up that allows him to work on various magitek projects and weapons. Tlalli: TBA (Pronounced Tah-lee) I will be expanding upon her once Dawntrail has dropped and I have more Lore. She is spicy :P
Diarmune: Gleaner, author and Seedkin specialist, he is a sweet well mannered scholar born and raised in Thavnair. Son to a silk maker and tailoress, he has developed a wide range of skills over his fifty-five years of life. Having been across multiple continents in search of rare and desired plants and flowers, as well as studying various seedkin from around the world. His specialty is Morbols, having even raised one of his own as a companion creature and study it. Her name is Dahlia. He speaks with a Thavnarian accent and has a very smooth tone, though sometimes he can talk a little too quiet. Not a fan of sweet, he instead loves spiced foods with lots of flavors and some heat. His mother makes the best curry, according to him.
Ame: A child of Doma, she was born into nobility but was forced to face the world after her home was razed to the ground. Sheltered and with no real survival skills she relied heavily on her partner to help navigate this dangerous world. Determined to help, she was introduced to Astromancy and pursued it over the years in the hopes of aiding others and doing her part. When not at the infirmary she runs the Pink Lotus Tea House and Cafe. Ame has a very motherly nature and often takes on the role of therapist in her company. Her favorite color is pink.
N'akani: Born to the 'N' tribe she fled her home as a young teen after her father, the Nuhn, was murdered under deception from a rival, and she was taken as a reward. Living as a street rat in Ul'Dah she survived on wits and trickery, eventually getting out of her life of thievery and catfishing and settling into a more stable life with her partners. She is obsessed with gold, be it the color, the coin or anything that is shiny and opulent looking. If it's gold, she wants it. While N'akani has some combat training she is not a fighter by trade, and lists her career as Make-up Artist and Body Painter, specializing in henna style designs, glam and theatre makeup. Flirty and very friendly, she can be deceptively sweet, especially if she wants something.
Isanii: Steppes born, she trained at a young age as a priestess and midwife among the Kagon tribe, however after her brother went missing she set out on a journey to find him that took nearly ten years. In the end she succeeded and through her journey also met her mate. She is a sweet bubbly woman, and while she may not be the most clever creature, the Xaela makes up for it in being a very kind and loving person. She is currently learning how to read. The most time consuming task in her day is combing through her incredibly long hair, and she has a penchant for sweets and treats. Due to her strong moral grounds as a priestess, Isanii will not lie, which can occasionally lead to some awkward conversations. She suffers from an autoimmune condition and often falls ill, forcing her to live a fairly docile life due to her weakened body.
Tsirae: An Ishgardian Knight, he is the youngest of four sons, but the only Bastard, and shares a father with the other three. During the Dragonsong War he fought along side his closest friends and lost many during the battles, leaving him scarred across his body from the conflict. After the war had ended he would lend his sword to the resistance in Garlemald. Quiet by nature, Tsirae has a noble demeanor and tries his best to always be an upstanding person and embody what being a Knight should be. To protect his home and people, to be honorable and respectful and always maintain his sworn morals. When not in armor, he runs a jewelry business with his partner, that had previously belonged to her father and his, however they have recently retired and signed it over to Tsirae and his partner.
Zhira: A woman who gambled her way to the deed to her ship, Zhira is a Pirate Captain and lives her dreams of the open ocean with a faithful crew and a beautiful ship at her command. She is stubborn and devious in nature, with an eye for expensive items and a strict code, one she enforces on her crew as well. Despite being pirates, she will not deal in the trafficking of lives. Goods and contraband is fine, but not lives. Fiery and loud, she has a presence among her crew and they often would run down other pirates and loot their ships. Currently she has an agreement with the Maelstrom that keeps her out of trouble, but there are always new adventures on the horizon.

(Possibly) unpopular opinion: I wish more fantasy worlds that have important characters and/or locations directly inspired by IRL historical cultures (i.e. RWBY, Genshin Impact, various RPGs and JRPGs, etc.) had ones based on the American Old West (especially ones where magitek or otherwise industrial-grade technology exist). There’s just something so uniquely chaotic about the idea of fantasy counterparts of a european knight, a wuxia swordsman, a viking, AND a western gunslinger interacting.
Delicious.
There's room for it in Arknights, but the Chinese developers have so far been more interested in exploring the prison industry and military-industrial complex through Columbia.
By any chance, have you watched Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, or Trigun? Those might stratch your itch a little.
I've never played the Wild Arms video games, but it's probably worth a look.
