Arranged marriage for the meme!
Yay! I don't have a vivid imagination for this trope, so more than half are cases where the arranged marriage is totally canon.
Thorn/Ophélie (La passe-miroir/The Mirror Visitor)
Tumblr media
It's very classic arranged marriage (for supernatural reasons) turns into resentment that stops them from realizing the good things about the other turns into alliance turns into unspoken love (painful for the reader) and maybe more? It fully worked on me. I especially loved how the description of Thorn (the book is Ophélie PoV) turn from uncharitable descriptions of an average looking man to very horny descriptions of an average looking man.
If you don't know the series, I can advertise it more. It's good French fantasy.
2. Louis/Caesar (Kimi o Shinasenai tame no Monogatari)
Tumblr media
Yeah I have at least one m/m canon arranged marriage, is a dystopian future where romantic partners and reproduction partners are totally disconnected. It's a painful case of arranged marriage with love only on one side, it's a mess and they don't make it work. I enjoyed it though. ^^
3. Xavin/Karolina (Runaways)
Tumblr media
In the category: arranged marriage to end a war. This one starts with love only one one side (it helps that one of them was raised to see this marriage as a positive thing and the other never heard about it), but they make it work. For a while. Because they're separated because you can't get peace that easily. Not the main romance for Karolina, but my fave.
4. David/Josiane (L'homme qui rit)
This one has a creepy age difference, but the relationship is fun despite it. They're capricious nobility of the kind "we could have loved each other so much, but the fact that our parents decided this for us is totally ruining the concept". I have hope for them in the future.
5. MIlly/Lloyd (Code Geass)
Tumblr media
They are a case who absolutely don't fall in love with each other and break the engagement. I think their personalities go well together, though, and that they could have been good friends if not for the "ugh" reaction of being arranged engaged.
6. Khonnen/Leah (The Dybbuk)
Tragic version! Their parents engaged them to each other before they were born, and because of this they feel drawn to each other (it's a world with magic) and fall in love. Leah's uncle has forgotten about the promise and wants his niece to marry a rich man. The boy dabbles in dark magic to get her anyway and dies, but his ghost is possessing her. It's absolutely not healthy. Still shipping it.
7. Philip/Elizabeth (The Americans)
Tumblr media
Communist spies in the eighties who are technically work colleagues but have a marriage licence and actual children. It's a slow burn romance and I love it.
8. Eponine/Marius (Les Misérables)
This one is absolutely not canon! I don't know why, I came across the idea of Marius thinking he has to marry Eponine out of gratefulness for Thénardier saving his father, either because he's naive, or because Thénardier is manipulating him, and I thought it had potential for being absolutely awful (complimentary)!
9. Ciel/Elizabeth (Black Butler)
Tumblr media
You know, they're cute (they're cousins but I don't care). As of recently in the manga it's more complicated than this, but if anything it made me ship it even more.
10. Twilight/Yor (Spy x Family)
Tumblr media
Both got married to have a cover for their (opposite sides) spy activities. Neither knows about it. It's written as cute anyway, on the arranged marriage that becomes real side, with their common affection for their (arranged) daughter a big part of the feelings. It works for me.

what about you? asks Marius in a text, several days later. how’s your week been?
Éponine looks up from her phone to watch Cosette, her head thrown back, laughing at one of Montparnasse’s jokes.
She thinks about typing it out: I think I’m falling for your girlfriend. She thinks about saying: well, I haven’t had time to do much besides writing love letters about you. She thinks about throwing it all to the wind and admitting: sometimes I love you so much that I forget to be afraid.
Cosette’s hair shines in the late-night lamplight -- she’s grinning like nothing in the world could ever be wrong. For a moment, Éponine almost believes her.
oh, you know, she ends up sending. same old, same old.
-
Éponine is fucked.

Like Minds (2006)
"All I can tell you is that the heavens were falling. (…) The sound, it was incredible. It was like the gods were rejoicing for what was done."
Les Miserables (2012)
"A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now. You're here, that's all I need to know. And you will keep me safe and you will keep me close and rain will make the flowers grow."

'58. Ah, boy. Took me a couple weeks of off-and-on watching to get through this one. Like, today when I realized I still had forty minutes left after the fall of the barricade, I thought to myself, "You know, I haven't bleached the shower enclosure yet this month. The cat room really could use a sweep. I need to feed out the old dubias." And I went and did all those things instead because they were more engaging of tasks than watching this film. I previously categorized Les Misérables adaptations as "good", "bad good", and "good bad", but now I'm gonna have to add an "indifferent bad" bucket. Unless you are hardcore invested in watching every available adaptation, I'd say this one's fine to skip. Really—I will not rewatch and I've seen BBC 2018 twice. A few thoughts:
The version I watched is a poorly done English dub, and as such I won't speak to the acting overall. Seems unfair. That being said, this is the butchest Marius—Giani Esposito brings to mind Michael Maguire's Enjolras.
The subtitles also have their troubles, which breathed a moment of comedy into the watching experience when the closed captioner misheard "Grantaire" as "Combeferre" and impugned the latter's honor, identifying him as the one getting drunk on the day of revolution. Somehow they also mishear "Mabeuf" as "Laroche"—I'm ninety percent certain this is their ears and not mine.
Danièle Delorme's Fantine is given room to be furious and bitter, spitting on Javert as well as Valjean, mocking the idea that she had easy access to the mayor to plead her case—it's the film's best moment, IMO.
Éponine has a nice lunch with Valjean and Cosette and is gifted a new dress in a sequence that brings to mind clumsily done but sweet Cosette/Éponine fanfics.
'58 makes several alterations that I am indifferent to (see: combining II.III.VIII-X and II.V.I-V) on the principle that every adaptation needs its room to breathe, but what the fuck is up with Javert being the Toulon warden's son, Thénardier being an actual sergeant, and Mabeuf a revolutionary? Those are backstory changes that have significant repercussions to understanding the characters—and they're not repercussions really played out by the film. Granted that Thénardier as a sergeant is played for laughs, so it has some function.
Javert asks Valjean "What made you save my life this morning?" and gets the merciless response "You really don't know why? I pitied you." Brutal. Don't blame the guy for jumping in the Seine. (More seriously: the film implies that Javert has had some kind of awakening here, seeing those he has previously ignored or persecuted, twitching when a poor man flees his presence—perhaps there's a flowering of pity—it's a breath away from being an interesting interpretation of the character.)

Les Miserables Magic Town AU 🎃
(Okay so Halloween is coming up and here is once again the plot for a story idea i have but that i am too lazy to actually write but still wanna share with the world)
Plot:
Marius is a young man who just recently moved into the little cozy town Milles Arbres in the countryside of France. He opens a little flower shop quickly makes new friends including Enjolras, Eponine, Grantaire, Courfeyrac, Combeferre etc.
But soon weird things start to happen, and Marius finds out that he is indeed the only human in a town filled with Warlocks, Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, Banchees, Ghouls and many more. Which ones of them can he truly call a friend and which ones a foe? And what is this Blood Moon Festival everyone around town keeps talking about?
The story includes both Enjoltaire (Enjolras x Grantaire) and Mariponine (Marius x Éponine)

courfeyrac x eponine?
Tumblr media
I actually misread this initially as Combeferre x Éponine, that's how intensely I have never even thought of this ship.
Ignoring the canon age gap (at the time of the barricades, she is 16 and Courfeyrac is 26), I just don't really see them having anything to offer one another? He isn't really gonna help her grow or figure out her trauma (see: his extremely passive role in guiding Marius), and she is a veritable child who, while headstrong, is very definitely working through some things. Even in fanon, though, they just seem like very conflicting personalities? I could see them becoming friends or unlikely allies, but not really getting romantically involved.

I have just been made aware (by @citoyenneangele ) of  this book
are you ready to hear the plot? you are not but here it is
In this thrilling sequal to Tom Hooper's Les Misérables, the only surviving member of the student revolutionary organization, the friends of the ABC, Marius finds that his old friends (thought to be lost in the June rebellion massacre of 1832) have been raised from the dead as human and vampire hybrids and are being enslaved by Éponine Thénardier, (also fallen in the uprising and raised as a vampire.) Not only that, but Eponine is planning to take over the world and rule it through Marius (who she is obsessed with) using an enchanted crown, once owned by the infamous Dracula. When one of the students goes missing, their former leader Enjolas goes to Marius and asks for help in breaking the curse that he and all his other revolutionary comrades lie under. In order to break the spell, they must distory Dracula's crown that that is now closely graded by Eponine's minions. Can Marius and Enjolas stop Eponine from conquering the world before it's too late? Will Marius overcome his fear of vampires? Will Enjolas re-win the affections of his x-wife?
Not gonna lie, this sounds amazing , I have never been so Intrigued by a sequel novel , has anyone else actually read it

Les Mis characters as things my friends (and I) have done while drunk (at one specific party in my friend's vineyard house):
• Enjolras: Stood on a chair for 5 minutes demanding we listen to him explaining why we absolutely need to vote in the next presidential election.
• Grantaire, Joly and Bossuet: Went on a walk in the vineyard at 4 am with nothing but a bottle of vodka, a single smartphone and a bluetooth speaker playing dancing queen by ABBA.
• Musichetta: Realised after 10 minutes the 3 guys were out in the vineyard, ran out to join them, freaked them out by yelling "HERE'S JOHNNY" a she approached them at full speed and jumped into one of the guys' arms.
• Jehan: Attempted to break into the attic to "check out the ghouls" and brought a single tortilla chip as an offering.
• Courfeyrac: Almost jumped as he heard the intro of montero by lil nas x and ran to the nearest guy and spent the rest of the song grinding on him.
• Marius: Guy who got grinded on by previous guy but then cried the rest of the evening because he was straight but didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by saying it.
• Éponine: Came to the party for the sole purpose of hooking up with her crush of 3 years, saw him get grinded on, spent the rest of the evening sitting on the ground slowly eating entire uncooked potatoes.
• Feuilly: Kept going outside in front of the house to get some time alone, but every single time at least 6 people would follow him because we just love hanging out with him so much.
• Bahorel: Aggressively sang along to disney songs while opening everyone's beer bottles with his bare hands.
• Combeferre: Took care of all the drunk people and helped them get to bed, read a bedtime story to a bunch of 18 years-old insisting they showed the pictures in the book, then fell asleep watching over them.
• Cosette: Surprised everyone with personalized friendship bracelets with our favortie colors and/or various pride flags.
• Montparnasse: Kept sneakily stuffing her bra with various items, the next morning someone asked where was the corkscrew and she deadass pulled it out of her bra. Several other items fell out, notably car keys, coins, and someone's social security card.

Modern AU Amis cultural backgrounds
Disclaimer: all of my headcanons are fluid, and depend heavily on the story I’m writing and whatever fits the plot and themes I’m working on. But as a general rule, these are my main cultural backgrounds. (Also, those I have written more will have more developed backgrounds, for obvious reasons. Sorry, Bossuet!)
Courfeyrac and Enjolras are French and rich. While Enjolras’ dad is a CEO, Courfeyrac comes from Old Money. His family is old nobility, but they have fallen from grace: he doesn’t really have that much money, but his family owns a manor in the country, and he will get a full set of silver cutlery if he ever gets married, and one of his uncles is obsessed with the family tree and has traced it all the way back to the XVIth century.
Combeferre is half Spanish and half Burkinais. His family from his mother side came from Spain after the Civil War, and they are staunchly revolutionaries. I haven’t decided whether they are communists or anarchists, but in any case, Combeferre has been raised on stories of fighting the fascists. On his father’s side, his father came to France as a young adult from Burkina Faso. Combeferre has never been to Burkina Faso, which pains him a lot, but he makes do with the African community from his home town.
Bahorel is probably the Frenchiest French of them all. Their family comes from a small town in the Pyrenées, and as far as they’re aware they’ve been farmers for forever. They’re actually the first one to go study to the big city. They have a very strong Southern accent.
Jehan is Sepharadic Jew. His family has lived in Algeria for many generations, but they moved to France when Algeria got its independence. That means, among other things, that his native languages are French, Algerian Arabic and Sephardic (according to Wikipedia it’s called ‘Judeo-Spanish’ in English?), and that he took to Spanish like a fish to the water. He sometimes still mixes Sephardic words when he speaks Spanish, Marius finds it fascinating.
Joly is French-born Vietnamese, and he had some identity dilemmas as a teenager, because his upbringing at home was completely Vietnamese (when he arrived to kindergarten he didn’t even speak French!), but outside of the house it was completely French. Is he more French or more Vietnamese?
Musichetta is born and raised in Martinique (a French island in the Caribbean), and she’s painfully aware that they are a colony in everything but name. She is also very very done with people asking her where she’s from, because she’s 100% French, dammit, white people in Martinique are a minority, why is it so complicated to understand!
Bossuet is Sub-Saharan African, and he’s a first-generation immigrant, but I haven’t decided how or when or in what context. I need to write him more.
Feuilly came to France as a teenager, as an undocumented immigrant. As such, he has been treated to every single undignified thing the government throws at people who could be minors, but also could be passed as adults and not be tended to. He stumbled around the foster care system, and at some point he ended living at a squat house that was run by an anarchist group for immigrant kids. At least until they got evicted. That’s also his first links to anarchist movements.
Grantaire is French, from Marseille, and he can imitate the accent very well if he wants to. He comes from a working-class family, that never had a lot of money, and he buys into the whole “that’s how it is, nothing you can do about it” attitude. Which infuriates Enjolras, of course, because he has lived it, how can he not revolt against it???
I have no backgrounds for Marius, Cosette or Éponine, but I’m leaning towards @takethewatch’s approach for Marius, in which he has been raised by a very bigoted French grandfather, and has discovered very very recently that his dad was  X nationality.

almost done with the letter-writing montage... just need one more (extremely gay) scene between cosette and eponine, to really sell the longing. it can serve the dual purpose of giving cosette an inkling of Just How Much her friend cares about her boyfriend.
well, you know. on top of the piles and piles of love letters that she's been writing on cosette's behalf, addressed to cosette's boyfriend. extremely sappy love letters. totally generic love letters. mhm

I think the Enjolras/Eponine thing (mostly) comes from people who have only watched the film, and thought that if Eponine can't get Marius she should get the best friend. Because you know. Tropes.
Also from some people who change Eponine's personality just because they want a "straight enjoltaire"
^^^ this
honestly thats the way I see it too, but obviously when you've seen/read other variations of the story then you realise that that's not actually the relationship dynamic between any of them at all
I haven't actually seen too much Enjolras x éponine fanfics thankfully, but there's nothing worse than thinking you've found a perfect enjoltaire fic on Ao3 and suddenly having your dreams crushed
