We ALL need to be sharing this story. In March, a Black, #Dallas based mother gave birth to a child at home. She was assisted by a Black midwife. The child has since been taken by Dallas Child Protective Services. After the child's birth, Temecia Jackson (the child's mother) took her to a routine pediatric appointment, where it was discovered that the baby had jaundice. While the pediatrician advised that they go to the hospital for treatment, Jackson and her husband, Rodney, decided to treat the child at home with the assistance of their midwife. This is not uncommon. The pediatrician had concerns over the type of light the Jacksons were using to treat their child, and eventually reported them to Dallas CPS. After harassing the family at 5am, on a separate date, police eventually arrested the father and took the child from the family's home. Yesterday, there was supposed to be a hearing for the baby to be reunited with her parents, but it was cancelled minutes before and rescheduled for April 20. This is every parent's worst nightmare and is particularly horrible given the medical racism Black mothers face and the cross country war on midwifery. Rodney and Temecia are fighting for their baby girl and they need to know that we are too. Please share this story far and wide. Also, The Afiya Center, a Black woman-led and Dallas based advocacy group, has started an emergency legal defense fund to support the Jacksons and other families facing similar situations.

Today I learned that it is legal for insurance companies to deny maternity care to dependent children.
If you're in the U.S. and have kids, talk to your insurance company now to make sure their response to your kids getting pregnant won't be, "Well, that sucks. Wish we could help."
Oh, and @staff won't blaze this. They won't blaze anything related to abortion either. They can't even be paid to pretend to care about women, girls, intersex people, trans men, and anyone else who can get pregnant.

Post-Dobbs: State Legislation Is Driving OB-GYNs To Leave
State-level anti-abortion legislation is causing OB-GYNs to leave red states, causing a severe lack of care in certain areas, which are now called OB-GYN deserts or maternity care deserts. Even the people who were intending on having a child now can’t get care. I hope babies don’t suffer because their parents supported this hateful legislation.

What maternity care should be
Don’t miss this: A home help for eight days after giving birth? Why Dutch maternity care is the envy of the world
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To new parents processing the shock of delivery and swimming in hormones, newborns can feel like a tiny, terrifying mystery; unexploded ordinance in a crib. “We were totally unprepared,” says Odilia. Neither she or her husband had ever changed a nappy and had no idea the baby needed feeding every three hours. “If you’re a new mum or dad, you have no idea,” recalls Anouk, a new mother.
The difference for these new parents, compared to the rest of us, is that they gave birth in the Netherlands. That meant help was instantly at hand in the form of the kraamzorg, or maternity carer. Everyone who gives birth in the Netherlands, regardless of their circumstances, has the legal right – covered by social insurance – to support from a maternity carer for the following week. If you’ve had a baby pretty much anywhere else in the world, this sounds little short of miraculous: exactly what many of us wished we could have had.

More than a quarter of counties in the U.S., 36%, have no obstetric hospitals or birth centers and no obstetric providers, such as obstetricians, gynecologists and certified midwives or nurse midwives, according to the report, which describes those areas as "maternity care deserts." That figure is an increase from 2020, and means that more than 2 million women of childbearing age -- ages 15 to 44 -- in the U.S. live in maternity care deserts, the report found. Nearly 7 million women live in areas with little to no access to maternity care, mostly in the South and Midwest, according to the report. "We know that lack of access to crucial maternal care is a driving factor for the poor outcomes that we see for moms in this country, for high mortality rates," Dr. Zsakeba Henderson, March of Dimes' interim chief medical and health officer, told "Good Morning America." "And we know that the United States continues to be one of the most dangerous industrialized nations to give birth in."

Menstrual cramps – What you should know
Dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps are painful cramps that come just before or during the menstrual period . About 50 % of women during their reproductive period have had different degrees of dysmenorrhea ,some time or the other .
What causes menstrual cramps ?
During the menstrual period there is release of some chemicals called prostaglandins which are produced in the lining of the uterus . These cause contractions of the muscle layer of the uterus and its blood vessels causing pain in the abdomen , back or thighs .
Tumblr media
How severe is dysmenorrhea ?
For some women , it is just mild , for others it is so severe that it causes disruption of normal everyday activities and lifestyle .
What are the types of dysmenorrhea?
Technically there are 2 types of dysmenorrhea – primary and secondary . Primary amenorrhea is the uterine spasm that I’ve described above . It recurs in every menstrual period and is not associated with any reproductive organ disease .Secondary dysmenorrhea is secondary to some disease in the reproductive organs like Endometriosis , adenomyosis, fibroids , pelvic inflammatory disease , congenital defects of the uterus , fallopian tubes , vagina or an imperforate hymen .
Secondary dysmenorrhea starts much before a menstrual period , is more intense and lasts much longer than 1 or 2 days from the start of the period .
