Whenever I try to imagine relationship between adult Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng, it's always JC going "boo-hoo, now that he's all grown up, he will fly away from the nest and forget all about me and leave my old bones to rot as things should be" and JL going "FINALLY. FINALLY IT'S MY TURN TO FUSS OVER YOU".
Something like this:
JL: When was the last time you touched grass? No. No, look me in the eyes. Answer the question. When was. The last time. You touched grass? Okay, I'm staying here and I'm not going anywhere until you touch grass. Go on, do it. No. No, don't you dare! Come on. Just a little bit, it's okay. There you go! Wasn't so bad, was it? --------------------------- JC (staying in the distance, holding hands to his mouth and shouting): IS IT ENOUGH BASKING IN THE SUN????? JL (watching him from afar, also holding hands to his mouth and shouting): FORTY SECONS DOESN'T COUNT AS 'BASKING IN THE SUN'!!! JC: FUCK!!! ---------------------------
(Jiang Cheng and Jing Ling are enjoying dinner in silence, when suddenly--) JL: Name three good things that happened to you recently. JC: *grumbles* JL: Come on. JC: Uhh..... Okay, I..... Uuuuuuugh... I saw a cute dog yersteday! JL: Oh, that's a good one. I'll count this for two. JC: Aaaand I just named a good thing that counts for two? JL: That's two plus zero. Think harder, uncle.
--------------------------- JC: Sometimes I wish you flew away from the nest and left my old bones to rot. JL: You should have thought about it before taking care of me.
---------------------------
JL: From now on you will sleep at least six hours per night. JC: No. JL: It's either that or hugging Wei Wuxian next time you see him. JC: Six hours is good, I can do that. (Jiang Cheng turns Lotus Pier upside down to find a rat who keeps reporting to Jin Ling about his sleep schedule. He can't find that person. Of course he can't! They are ALL rats!)

When Nie Huaisang was a kid, he used to have really round squishy cheeks, so Nie Mingjue used to pinch them lovingly all the time. Since this "lovingly" was by Mingjue's standarts, Huasang's body had to adapt to protect itself and over the years he developed very thick skin on his face and a good layer of protective fat. His tolerance toward rough treatment has grown so high that by the time they were adults Mingjue could pinch his cheek, lift him up and carry him around like a kitten. And Huaisang developed kitten reflexes too: he would draw in his limbls and freeze until put back on the ground.
Here's a little doodle to indicate what I'm talking about:

*takes mic*
If Jiang Fengmian really followed his Sect's motto and attempted the impossible, he would love his son despite the fact that his marriage is a wreckage and Jiang Cheng resembles his mother so much.
*throws the mic at the crowd with full force, jumps right after, screams bloody murder, throws punches right and left, bites you*

Okay, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but details of Wei Wuxian's death are ambiguous. Was it Jiang Cheng, was it a loss of control, was it an act of self-destruction? And yet, readers who are 100% sure that JC killed WWX make me laugh and cry at the same time, and here’s why.
PEOPLE SAY that Yiling Laozu was killed by his shidi. PEOPLE ALSO SAY that Yiling Laozu kidnapped 1000 women to build a harem.
Okay, we all had a good laugh about sleepovers in harem, but speaking of the first statement - it's said once in chapter one by unknown person and is never mentioned again.
And this is Mo Dao Zu Shi – the book about Public Opinion and how it means jack shit. About people loving hot topics for the sake of hot topics. Noble cultivators, the most educated and experienced men of their land, wanted to kill Wei Wuxian.
Several hours later they wanted to kill Jin Guangyao.
AND WWX WAS THERE, SAW TIDE TURN AND MUSED OVER THIS FLEETING NATURE OF PUBLIC OPINION. One of the men who earlier today shouted death threats at him, now addressed him politely and asked if he's going to stay for banquet! WWX WENT FROM “ENEMY OF THE STATE” TO “ONE OF US” IN MATTER OF HOURS.
Because that’s how people are and it’s all over the book! They gossip, they believe what they are told in an instance, they change their opinion at the sound of twig snapping. It started in chapter one, it’s carried on in extras. Main character remarks on it repeatedly. And still...
TL;DR: JC killing WWX was a gossip spread by people, it may be true, it may be not. But if you DO believe it just because it’s stated by unknown someone, then how about Yiling Laozu’s harem?

❗❗MDZS spoilers, TGCF spoilers❗❗
Nie Huaisang: I destroyed him through and through. His own wife found him repulsive. The whole cultivation society wanted his downfall. He lost his mother's ashes. His dearest friend fatally wound him and dage tore his body apart. And what did you do with bastard who decapitated your brother?
Shi Qingxuan: He... comes over to dinner sometimes?

One of the things I like most about WWX as a character, is how easily his whole image is tiptoeing between dramatic and silly. Some of my favorite examples of this dichotomy are about his weapons.
The first time WWX uses Suibian post-resurrection to repel JGY’s attack. By doing so, he alerts the whole cultivation world to the return of fearsome Yiling Laozu. The second time he uses Suibian to cut watermelon, while LWJ and WN are busy digging graves.
Chenqing is a unique and extremely powerful artifact associated with dark art and death of thousands of cultivators. At the end of the story, it’s WWX’s weapon of choice, although it holds the tragedy of his first life. Oh, and It’s also one toddler’s favorite chew toy.

The skin on Xiao Xingchen’s neck looks really soft. Xue Yang wants to know if it’s really as soft as it looks and he gives in to his desire to nuzzle against it. It is soft and also delightfully warm and smells really nice. Xue Yang can feel this smell at the tip of his tongue. He wants to lick Xiao Xingchen’s skin, get a real taste, but instead he finds that wonderful pulsing vein. He presses his lips to it, to feel the pulse better. Xiao Xingchen’s breath stutters and he freezes but not before titling his chin up to give Xue Yang better access. Xue Yang marvels at the feeling of daozhang’s pulse quickening. Xiao Xincheng swallows, and his adam’s apple jumps under Xue Yang’s lips. Xue Yang has never felt the beat of life like this, never held it so close and observed it so quietly. He wants to feel more, so he tugs at Xiao Xincheng’s collar, but is stopped, as daozhang catches his wrist.
“My friend...”, he breathes in warning tone.
Xue Yang lets go, Xiao Xingchen too, but he allows Xue Yang to drag his palm along his chest above his clothes. Xue Yang’s hand stops above heart – and there it is, quick and strong. Xue Yang pushes his hand against daozhang’s chest, and the other doesn’t move away, but instead leans into the touch, and Xue Yang thinks that if he were to close his hand now, he would hold Xiao Xingchen’s heart – living, bleeding, beating fast because of him, for him.
I'm looking for a feeling, I want to know I'm looking for a feeling that won't let me go Closing my eyes, wind and the rain Holding an anguish, I can't contain Devendra Banhart - Feeling

The question about MDZS that will never let me rest – what are Lan Jingyi’s origins? He is so un-Lan compared to everyone else! Even Sizhui, who was in the sect since early childhood, successfully assimilated everything Lan. That makes me think that Lan Jingyi came to Cloud Recesses later, but he has the cloud ornament on his headband, so he’s either adopted by unnamed Lans oooor there is a Lan side branch somewhere.
And the thought about side branch is so funny, because remember how different Wens were? What if Jingyi is typical for his side of the family? Imagine, there’s a whole bunch of Lans out there who say stuff like: “Three thousand rules are to be treated with utmost respect and seriousness. We dedicate our lives to commemorate the ways of our family. But only gods are without flaws and what can we, humble beings… Wait, what? What did you say? The rules’ count went up to four thousand?? Oh, for fuck’s sake!”

AU in which Wei Wuxian is a fox-spirit, Lan Wangji is a dragon and A-Yuan is a half-fox spirit, half-human. In his human form, Lan Zhan has antlers and while they are studying in Cloud Recess, Wei Ying is bold enough to constantly remark how chewable they look. Thing is, fox spirits always crave something to gnaw, and the younger they are, the bigger the need. Lan Zhan is nothing but offended at these remarks.
Skip forward. Soon after Lan Zhan takes A-Yuan into custody, the kid begins to express the same need. Of course he doesn’t say anything, but he keeps staring at Lan Zhan’s antlers. A-Yuan has a variety of chewing toys made from special materials and/or enchanted to the point that you can use any of them as spiritual weapons if you, say, decide to hit a walking corpse on a head with it. But even being just half-spirit, A-Yuan destroys all of them sooner or later, and he can’t control himself properly, so he ends up gnawing and destroying lots of other things while he’s on it. Dragon antlers, on the other hand, are known to be practically unbreakable. Even Wei Wuxian, a pure-blood fox-spirit noted to be remarkably strong for his young age, probably wouldn’t be able to break them.
So Lan Zhan makes a compromising decision.
Skip forward. When resurrected Wei Wuxian notices it for the first time, he thinks his eyes are playing tricks on him, but on the closer inspection he confirms that one antler has a small chip. Wei Wuxian thinks that Lan Zhan must have encountered a deadly enemy at some point. It should take an unprecedented amount of spiritual power to deal damage to a dragon antler.

The first thing Jiang Cheng spoils Jin Ling with is physical contact. He just can’t help it after Yanli’s death: whenever he sees baby A-Ling, he needs to hold him close, and thus he becomes the most tactile of newborn’s relatives. In return, baby grows very attached to Jiang Cheng too, and prefers to spend most of their time together in his jiujiu’s lap or somewhere nearby. This doesn’t change as he reaches his first exploring phase. Doing paperwork with a toddler in your lap, who must touch everything, must drop everything, will keep trying to lick ink is a task that seems impossible, but Jiang Cheng manages. Mostly. At times he’s too tired and resigned and lets Jin Ling have his way. He will calm down after getting ink all over table, uncle and himself, and then Jiang Cheng will be blessed with some quiet time, as young explorer recharges for his next big venture.
Soon enough this attachment becomes a problem.
Wherever Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng are reunited, the nephew won’t tolerate two hours apart from his uncle. At three years old Jin Ling already attends all negotiations and meetups hosted by Jiang Cheng. Many guests are less than happy about small child’s presence and some of them ask if maybe Young Master Jin should be somewhere else. But Sect Leader Jiang is unmovable: as a future Sect Leader, his nephew must start his training as soon as possible. Luckily, Jing Ling is either smart enough or too shy of new people, and behaves docile, so many skeptical guests start to respect and even consider this strategy of upbringing. The fact that Sect Leader Jiang was shamefully defeated and forced into obedience by furious tantrums of a small child remains a well-hidden secret.
Jin Ling’s tantrums are furious, dangerous even. Jiang Cheng learns very early that he must never schedule a night hunt while Jin Ling is at Lotus Pier. He can do any sort of arrangements with a kid in his arms by now, but there’s no way he’s taking him to a night haunt! Jin Ling sees his uncle about to leave and he cries and cries and cries and does so in such violent manner that doctors predict danger for his physical health.
The only way to return him safely to Lanling is for Jiang Cheng to take him himself. There Jin Ling can be distracted by other family members as Jiang Cheng makes his escape. Not that he wants to escape, really.  Having a kid by your side all the time is quite addicting, and Jiang Cheng has to multiply his workload three times to make up for feeling of loss.
Despite all difficulties, Jin Ling’s huge attachment to Jiang Cheng proves to have many useful side effects. Jiang Cheng actually tries to make something good out of ink disasters, so he tries to teach Jin Ling to hold brush and draw lines even if he doesn’t understand what he’s doing. When actual writing lessons start, Jin Ling adapts quickly and experiences fewer troubles along the way than expected of a child. Taking Jin Ling anywhere with him means he rides with Jiang Cheng on a horse, which gradually leads to Jing Lin learning to ride on his own pretty early. At age six Jing Ling is very invested in coping adults and Jiang Cheng half-joking allows him to “assist” in youngest disciples’ training. This starts as turmoil for said disciples, who are confused about whose’ orders they should follow: Sect Leader’s six-years-old nephew or older disciple’s, who’s actually in charge of training. But by the time Jin Ling is twelve, he is so familiar with Jiang’s swordsmanship and training routine that he can successfully train Jiang’s newbies on his own, even if they are physically older than him.
Years go by, and naturally outside world becomes more tempting than comforting presence of his adults. Jin Ling develops a new talent, which is – to vanish into thin air. Jiang Cheng even holds an experiment at some time, when they head to town and he asks Lin Ling to stay put and wait for him outside just for a little while. He takes a few steps away, looks back – and yes, the kid is already gone. It’s remarkable. And terrifying. Jin Ling is at that age when he believes himself to be very cunning and all his plans nothing short of genius. Unfortunately, his assertions don’t match the reality, which earns many "fond" memories to him and his uncle, and also leads to Jiang Cheng developing a new habit of checking Jin Ling’s whereabouts every five minutes, but that’s a whole another age of their lives.

Whenever I think about xuexiao, I always ponder over to which extent Xue Yang was aware of his own emotions. Did he even comprehend that he is capable of loving someone or has he been experiencing something wild without ever stopping to reflect on it? Whatever the answer is, I like to believe that there was a stage somewhere in first half of their domestic bliss, where Xue Yang was completely oblivious. He got to the point where he didn’t want to see Xiao Xingchen sad and always tried to cheer him up, but his sole reasoning behind it was “daozhang looks prettier when he smiles”. And yet the “prettiest” moment Xue Yang’s brain has registered was when he told a joke that made Xiao Xingchen laugh (with lots of wheezing and snorting) so hard he fell off the bench he was sitting on.

I was going for a text post, but ended up with a drabble about sharing bed on cold nights, getting used to non-sexual intimacy and Xue Yang loosing at his own games and being surprisingly content with it. Hope you enjoy!
During their first winter on one particularly cold night Xiao Xingchen offers his outer robe to A-Qing to use as a blanket. When she asks what about him, Xue Yang interferes, saying that they shall sleep together to keep each other warm. He just wants to tease, but Xiao Xingchen suddenly agrees. More than that, he seems to be... enthusiastic about it?
Later that evening, Xiao Xingchen reveals that since nights can be pretty harsh where he came from, it was common for children to share bed and sleep together. Xue Yang plays it cool despite being mildly irritated that instead of embarrassed (as was originally planned), Xiao Xingchen looks happy. However, after some time, this happiness dulls into nostalgia, sadness even, and Xiao XIngchen shyly asks Xue Yang if he can hug him.As they fall asleep, Xiao Xingchen shares stories from their sleepovers back at home in a hushed tone. And Xue Yang...
Xue Yang is not sure why he agrees to all of this – to this hug, to these stories. The whole thing clearly doesn’t go in his favor. Unlike certain someone, he’s never slept next to another person and he lets Xiao Xingchen share his stupid stories, so he doesn’t have to do the talking and can focus on his feelings instead. It does feel very nice and warm. He was worried that he will be repulsed by foreign presence, but Xiao Xingchen is not the problem. The problem is: since it’s an unfamiliar situation and since people only got this close to him when they tried to kill him, part of his brain is writhing, looking for a catch, waiting for an attack. Reasonably, Xue Yang understands that since it’s daozhang Xiao Xingchen, the worst thing that could happen is that he would drool in his sleep, but that doesn’t stop the alarm ringing in his head. Xue Yang falls asleep to warmth, to gentle hands around him, to soft whisper, but also to uneasy feeling in his gut.
That’s why, when he wakes up, the first thing his brain processes is that there’s someone close enough to kill him. Xue Yang’s hand flies to Jiangzai, but it’s not on its’ place next to him, so instead Xue Yang kicks as hard as he can and rolls back.
Xiao Xingchen wakes up to being kicked in the stomach, which sends him in a coughing fit. A-Qing wakes up then and immediately starts shouting at Xue Yang. Out of three, it’s daozhang who first accesses the situation. Everybody has a story, for many people their stories are tragic, and Xiao Xingchen has already figured that his new friend is one of them. So he assures A-Qing that everything is alright, and then tries to calm down the man.
Xue Yang has hard time remembering where he is, why fucking Xiao Xingchen is there, and why he tells him that no one will hurt him. It’s hard to get a hold of himself and remember the persona he’s supposed to play, but eventually he manages.
The winter is being pretty harsh that year, and soon enough Xiao Xingchen offers his outer robe to A-Qing again. He asks Xue Yang if maybe they could sleep together. and Xue Yang agrees on a whim. The thing is, that time he woke up disorientated and scared, and it took a while before he could bear his surroundings. And if he was to live with Xiao Xingchen, it just wouldn’t do. He has to train himself better.
It’s Xiao Xingchen’s idea that they should sleep next to each other, but not too close, so dear friend won’t get... triggered in the morning. So they do, and this time they talk about their day, what else can be done to make coffin house hold against the weather, whether they have enough logs stacked for winter or not and stuff like this. Xue Yang falls asleep mid-sentence, his last coherent thought being that it was a stupid idea, because it doesn’t get much warmer this way.
Xue Yang has always been adaptive and pretty soon he learns to wake up without as much as a shiver. Besides, they’ve been slowly scooting closer to each other in their sleep anyway, seeking the source of warmth.  He rarely gets to wake up before Xiao Xingchen (seems that he’s pretty adaptive too and one kick in the stomach was enough for him), but when he does, he likes to throw his arm and leg around daozhang and pretend he’s sleeping, so when the other man wakes up, he always tries to disentangle himself as discreetly as possible. Xue Yang found out he can make it harder if he tightens his hold and makes a protesting sound “in his sleep”. The first time he does it, he kind of hopes that Xiao Xingchen would admit defeat and stay close for as long as he would entertain it. But even if Xiao Xingchen halts and doubles his efforts at being accurate, he always gets up and leaves Xue Yang.
One morning Xue Yang wakes up with Xiao Xingchen’s arms around him. He hasn’t hugged him since that first time, but they’ve been sleeping close for a while now, so Xue Yang doesn’t freak out. In fact, it feels nice, adds to the warmth, so he just spends some time in thoughtless bliss. But then he wants to get up. He tries to be sneaky about it, but the arm around him tightens. Xue Yang stills, waits a little bit and tries again, but the embrace tightens further. Each try only makes Xiao Xingchen’s grip grow stronger. Who knows how long it continues, until Xue Yang hears the voice of a clearly very awake person right next to his year:
“I bet you’re very proud of yourself”.
Xue Yang smirks.
“Why shouldn’t I be?”
“I knew you were awake each time. I just thought I’ll indulge you for a bit”.
“And what’s happening now? Payback time?”
“Well, I thought maybe this time you’ll indulge me”, Xiao Xingchen says, his voice soft with amusement, fingers lightly tapping some rhythm on the other man’s back.
Xue Yang closes his eyes. He lost. He got caught. By all accounts, he should be mad, but somehow, he isn’t. Somehow, he feels good.
Xiao Xingchen must have interpreted his silence in his own manner, because his hold becomes slack and he moves away so Xue Yang could see his face.
“I’m sorry, I hope I didn’t bother you. I should have thought about it sooner”.
“No, it’s okay. I got used to you by now, so you can hug me whenever you want. I won’t kick you again... I think”.
Xiao Xingchen’s eyebrows go up.
“You think?”
Xue Yang grins.
“Yeah. Scared?”
He finds it incredibly funny when the other man actually thinks about it until he smiles resolutely.
“Worth the risk”, he says.
As the worst of the winter cold passes, Xiao Xingchen ends up offering his outer robe to A-Qing three nights in a row, and she declines his generous offer each time. On the third night Xiao Xingchen looks so defeated that Xue Yang can’t hold it anymore: he breaks into laughter and says that if Xiao Xingchen wanted to sleep together, he should have just said so. This makes A-Qing’s hackles rise. She makes a snarky remark how there is literally no reason for them to be sleeping together since it’s not so cold anymore. Somehow, this makes daozhang look even more sorrowful, and Xue Yang decides that just this once, he will save him.
“But sharing bed reminds him of home! He does so much for an ungrateful brat like you, and now he can’t have even one good thing!”
“My friend, A-Qing is only pointing the obvious: we started this, so we could all stay warm”.
“Yes, but we don’t have to stick to this reason. Let’s create another one and move on”.
This makes Xiao Xingchen freeze for a moment just like he used to when Xue Yang played his tricks in the morning.
“Alright”, he says eventually, and all the sorrow he had before leaves him at once.
Xue Yang looks at him a little dumbfounded, suddenly realizing that their routine just went through permanent changes.
They are all quiet for a while, before A-Qing asks in a far more pleasing tone:
“Daozhang, if you are sleeping with him, can I have your outer robe?”
Winter slowly gives way to the spring.

Me: I’m totally normal about Yi city arc, it can’t hurt me more than it already did
My brain: Funny how Xiao Xingchen was the one to demand tribunal and righteous punishment for Xue Yang, but none of the great clans wanted/could bestow said punishment, and in the end it was Xiao XIngchen who made Xue Yang punish himself. Because death sentence probably wouldn’t really scare someone like Xue Yang, and life imprisonment would make him more unstable, but won’t hurt him in any way that he’s never been hurt before. But Xiao Xingchen’s suicide? After years of rejection and alienation Xue Yang was finally truly accepted and cared for. That very basic human connection, rid of fear and disgust, the feeling of belonging – the most basic needs of psyche, that were satisfied maybe for the first time in his life. Maybe it was the only good thing that ever happened to him, and he tore it to pieces. However now that he knows this connection, he will never be able to go to his old self. A life imprisonment as a dispised monster wouldn’t hurt as much as the free life of a man who was shown kindness once, only for it to disappear from his life, never to return. So yeah, the punishment was righteous indeed.

Oh the irony in JIang Cheng’s persecutions of demonic path’s cultivators and the fact that he completely fucking missed two most effective dark cultivators after Wei Wuxian himself - Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu.
Like okay, Mo Xuanyu flied under every radar, but Xue Yang was the big deal??? Nie Mingjue personally wanted him dead??? Even if he was not connected to Wei Wuxian at the time, surely horrible murder of entire clan would catch attention of local inquisitor, no??? (This detail alone really makes me wonder, how much of JC's persecutions were real and how much were rumours).
Oh the DOUBLE irony that no one ever noticed Mo Xuanyu and yet he surpassed Xue Yang, because Xue Yang failed at his main goal, while Mo Xuanyu not only succeeded (got his revenge) - he also also perfomed a ritual, which his predecessor has only described in theory (seriously, HOW?).
Edit: the ritual wasn’t invented by WWX, it’s ancient. Still pretty cool of MXY to conduct it.

There’s no way Lan Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen let Jing Ling go without giving him shit for being younger all the time. Sometimes they would be creative about it, but most of the time they’d just do random shit for the sake of doing shit. Like LJY would yawn, then turn to JL and say something like “you’ll get it when you are older”. And with significant randomness of jokes even someone as sensitive as JL stops caring much pretty soon. He would say “fuck off” on autopilot without as much as looking at them and wihout stopping from doing what he’s doing.
But there’s no way Lan Sizhui doesn’t actually ponder over the fact that as older peers they are kind of responsible for JL. And at some point he unconsciously slips into more condescending tone while talking to him. Either words of praise sound a liiiiitle too сheesy or words of consolation sound a liiiiiitle too pompous. It’s barely there, really! And it happened just once!
Anyway, years in the future, the offense is still burning hot in Jing Ling.
