reading roundup: February 2024
I literally completely forgot I needed to do this oopsie poopsie
WHAT DID I READ IN FEBRUARY!!! LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!!!!
Rouge (Mona Awad, 2023) - listen. there are some very cool ideas in this book, and it's definitely big creepy in places. some of the childhood flashbacks, in particular, had me shrieking with pure dread. but ultimately my issue with this book is the same as my issue with Awad's most well-known novel, Bunny: I would just... kind of like to understand what's going on? like even a little bit? at literally any time? you don't need to explain everything, but man, give me something. vibes alone do not make a meal, and I left this book not really feeling fed.
Our Share of Night (Mariana Enríquez, trans. Megan McDowell 2023) - god, this book makes you WORK FOR IT, but I'm glad I stuck it out. Enríquez has written a fucking doorstopper of intergenerational drama, about an Argentinian family deeply embroiled in a cult that worships something otherworldly and... hungry. perpetually sickly Juan is the Order's prized prophet, but after his wife's death is orchestrated by her own mother he becomes determined to get their young son, Gaspar, away from the Order's control by any means necessary. a wrenching read that swings through every kind of horror, swinging from the supernatural to Argentina's military dictatorship in the 70s to the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and 90s to an absolutely brutal ending.
Red String Theory (Lauren Kung Jessen, 2024) - some of you may recall that Lauren Kung Jessen wrote Lunar Love, one of my favorite romance novels of last year thanks to a zodiac-obsessed protagonist who's (unintentionally) giving major Rebecca Bunch pre-diagnosis in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend vibes. Red String Theory also has a female lead obsessed with mythological matchmaking, so I was really hoping for another unhinged queen, but please don't make my mistake: everyone in this book is devastatingly hinged, and the only real conflict is two characters who like each other from the jump repeatedly coming up with unsatisfying excuses for why they can't date each other. my least favorite was "we'll only in the same city for A YEAR," which is absolutely hogshit wild. "only a year." get out of here. I hate you guys.
Drinking from Graveyard Wells (Yvette Lisa Ndlovu, 2023) - a tiny short story debut by Ndlovu, a Zimbabwean sarungano. one of my very favorite genre of short story collections is "women having a bad time taken up to 11," and god does this deliver. Ndlovu writes about the many indignities heaped upon Zimbabwean women at home and abroad, weaving together tight stories about misogyny, war, poverty, and immigration with restless spirits, bored gods, ignored wise women, and unsatisfactory afterlives. there's a story about a near future in which diamond miners are purposefully set up and sacrificed to an angry underground god to create more diamonds that was so fucking clever, and the final story - the titular Drinking from Graveyard Wells - was just... an absolutely perfect short story. suspenseful and eerie and just enough of a hint of explanation to really chill you. chef's kiss.
It Happened One Summer (Tessa Bailey, 2021) - shout out to all of my patreon supporters who voted to make me read another Tessa Bailey book; you truly wish darkness and despair upon me. here's the insane thing about this book: if you just completely ignore the actual central romance, it's just a sweet book about an infinitely likeable young woman unplugging from her shallow socialite life and finding a new niche reviving her deceased father's bar in a tiny fishing town in Washington. it's like, you know, the plot of a pretty okay disney channel original movie? it's no Minute Men or High School Musical, but it's cute. it's a solid Dairy Girls or Princess Protection Program. but then there's the love interest, who's just a fucking tool all the way down. reader, I kept wishing he would get swept over the rigging of his own crab boat and die ingloriously at sea. this guy sucks so bad. also the sex scenes were identical to the ones in Unfortunately Yours and they did not taste any better reheated. fascinating treatise on cishetero gender norms, rancid romance. I wrote a whole thing about it on my patreon if you're into that kind of nastiness.

Oh, um, hi! English is not my first language so sorry for all the mistakes, and I just wanted to say some cute things i saw in "The Sea Beast" the movie on Netflix. I know it's a little late but I just rewatched it and couldn't live without telling someone about those things I just noticed.
First of all, I'm a little obsessed with Sarah Sharpe so this will be most about her.
Ok, let's go, do y'all remember this scene? Where they all go down on that city before going to the castle? (I forgot the English name for the city since I watched it in Portuguese)
Tumblr media
Well, look, Sarah goes first than anyone. (I couldn't find the specific scene but y'know) even tho there are part of the tripulation carrying those heavy horns from the beasts, she still goes first. Before Captain Crow and before Jacob, so, in my little mind I saw this as a way of them to be caring, since she clearly has some problems walking due to the leg.
Cus, like, imagine all the times she would be left behind cus she can't run properly? She probably can, obviously, but it won't be that easy. So, I'm pretty sure its like a unspoken rule to let Sarah go first anywhere.
Also, just imagine the trouble this woman has walking on sand, grass, and anything that would make her leg sink? Poor baby. Y'know, in heels, the heels keep sinking in the sand and grass and breaking and stuff. A easy way to protect yourself from that horror is to step on your toes, but Sarah's leg is only heel, do you get it? I hope it makes sense.
Anyway, one more thing I noticed.
Tumblr media
She is like, "the fuck this b* gonna catch me slipping" on that scene. I don't know where she specifically is but, I'm sure this woman is doing her best to not fall. Cus, y'know, her leg doesn't seem to move (I forgot the verb in english) and it is probably complicated for her to get up by her own. And they're being attacked my woman doesn't wants to die today.
Also, funny thing that I had to watch 2-3 times to notice: she also uses swords and knifes, not only the guns. Everytime I though about her, I absolutely believed that she only used shotguns. But watching this scene, I can see she clearly using this sword. (There is any other name for it?)
Tumblr media
And, oh, look at her model! It isn't rendered but we can see clearly some important things here: just like I said before, this leg would be the absolutely worst to walk on grass. It has this spikes thing and would easily get stuck, which would cause trouble. also, look! She wears more blue-green than others colors.
If you look well, you'll notice that every important character has its own pallette, and Sarah's is blue-green centered.
Comparing her to Captain Crow, his pallette is more Black-ish with golden.
Tumblr media
He has mostly black in his coat, hat, shirt, pants and stuff while my woman wears this pretty blue.
Like, look (sorry for the BAD quality) Miss Merino is more red-ish. While Jacob is more yellow, even with the hints of red. She's blue and green.
Tumblr media
Also, talking about Jacob, look.
Tumblr media
My man's works out, just look and these arms that could easily carry me to death. It isn't a surprise that there are so much people simping for him he's absolutely playing on both sides.
Also, I'm pretty sure he "cuts to both sides" (it's a expression we use here to say someone likes both women and men) cus there's no damn way my man's haven't got his bitches.
Just look at him, I'm sure that he only arrives at the city's so he can talk to his girlies.
Learned with his mother figure Sarah.
Anyway, I'll stop simping (for now.).
Tumblr media
Do y'all notice that his clothing are simpler? Even tho he's clearly the captains favorite, he goes with this white common shirt while everybody has its complicated and cool looks?
It is because he's the protagonist, he has to call attention to him. And everyone has its super cool design with all those textures and details and stuff, it would be hard for him to shine. So, instead of giving him a super cool clothing, he's wearing something plane and simple that's easier to remember about.
Same for Maisie, but I'll be talking about her later wait there.
Anyway, giving him a simpler design and clothing made him appear more in the scenes, specially the dark ones. Since his blouse is white, it appears a lot.
Ok, coming to maisie.
Tumblr media
Diferente from Jacob, that has only his white shirt on top, she has three layers of clothing.
And yet, it is still simpler.
Why? Because it doesn't folds, doesn't has much detail and doesn't has much texture. What calls attention in her is specifically her hair and how her brighter colors doesn't mix with the rest of the tripulation BUT these who have a similar spirit!
Look at old Jack, who also has his little white shirt on, and that boy who Jacob saved in the start of the movie. Both of them have a lighter pallete, which goes just right with Jacob's and Maisie's pallete.
And also, notice that Maisie's also goes for blue-green colors. Just like Sarah, but her's are lighter tones.
No more, just noticed those cute details that I had to talk about.

Tagged by @hxhhasmysoul thanks again munen!
I will tag: @nangke @syncopatedid @autumnxsunflower @trashsketch @applepi00 @mariposahxh. Only if you want to!
Favourite colour: these days, purple
Last song: Replacements - Answering Machine. Unless you count the baby music that plays from the baby toys, then it's Itsy Bitsy Spider
Last movie: I said it briefly on here, but it was "Barbarians" on Halloween. I went in blind after seeing it on an online best-of spooky movies list so all I'll say is it was seriously messed up and I still think about MANY of the scenes, especially when I have to go down to the unfinished part of my basement. It's been so long since I've watched a real horror movie (not a parody) that I forgot they can be genuinely disturbing.
...I'll say one more thing, it's a horror movie directed especially at women. I mean it's a horror movie about things that women, more than men, are likely to find upsetting and scary, especially in the beginning.
Other stuff I watched this year: I'm still on my Great British Baking Show kick! Currently on season 8, after the switch from BBC to Chanel 4 and after they changed the presenters. This show is terrible because it just makes me crave sweets - and I always crave sweets when the weather gets colder - and as a rule, there's nothing like that in the house. Like I'll eat some strawberries or part of a cantaloupe or an apple slice with honey because that's the only sweet thing we have. Anyway, I like the new presenters.
Shows I dropped this year/didn't finish: The Marvelous Ms. Maisel. We'll probably get back to it, but it was too hard to watch while also scrolling my phone / making the baby's food for daycare / cleaning the baby bottles / etc. during the one hour of free time I have every night before bed.
Currently reading: the BNHA manga as it releases each week, that's about it.
Currently listening to: the local jazz radio station, the records I have in my house. Carole King - Tapestry was the last one. And Andre 3000's new record with the funny tracknames.
Currently working on: STAINING THE BACK DECK, oh my God we've spent the last three weekends on this. But it needed to be done, it had 30 years of mold on it.
Current obsession: I was gonna say the baby, BUT ACTUALLY. I started watching the Scott Pilgrim anime and I'm four episodes in. The show tricks you into thinking it'll be a rehash of the comic by being a beat-for-beat recreation of the first volume - including the visual gags! - until suddenly, it's completely different LOLOLOL I had to get my comics off the shelves, and reread them to be sure that yeah, no, that's definitely not how it happened before. Gonna avoid the show tags bc spoilers, BUT HERE ARE MY PREDICTIONS:
It's a smart move for the show to switch the metaphor from Scott fighting the evil exes (your new girlfriend has baggage that makes you feel insecure, you have to deal with your insecurity by winning a fistfight against each ex to prove you are worthy of her) to RAMONA fighting the evil exes (you have to deal with your own past and put it behind you before you can move on). Because like, yeah there is a metaphor when Scott fights the exes, but it's an annoying one that centers the feelings of an insecure dude over the feelings of the girl he's dating.
.... though I'll miss the focus on the mundane in the original comic, how much it reminds you that Scott is a loser but he's like, trying to improve. Like you know he's a loser from the jump because he doesn't have a job and he's a mooch and he's dating a high schooler, but briefly you think he might be kinda cool because he picked up Ramona, but then she tells him he has to get a job AND HE CAN'T so you're like... oh. Yeah this guy actually is a loser. But (as Ramona says) perhaps he's a loveable loser? He does keep landing these great girls ...
And we can still do that exact same speculation without Scott on screen, as Ramona learns more about him in the course of her investigations, so that's pretty clever... I wonder if Ramona will actually like him if she ever manages to rescue him :p.
Anyway since this show is now a whodunnit...
As of episode four, vegan boyfriend #3 seems superficially like the person who kidnapped Scott, but it's too early for him to be the real kidnapper.
The next most obvious suspect is Wallace, because it's clear Young Neal didn't actually write the movie script, and only Wallace (probably) knew what Scott said to him that morning, before he went to the party and met Ramona.
Why would Wallace do it? To get Scott out of the apartment and become a movie star, maybe...
But I actually think Wallace is ALSO too way too obvious, and he's being set up as the person you'll suspect all the way up until the final reveal at the end...
I think it's probably Giddeon, in the end, again, actually. Like we know he has all these cameras set up to observe Scott and research him, right? Maybe he noticed Ramona was using his head as a shortcut and started his research early...
Why would Giddeon do it? Maybe part of a ploy to make himself appear sad and pathetic so Ramona will feel sorry for him and he can get close to her to date her again? Maybe he knew Scott would beat all the other ex-boyfriends (as written in the movie script) in a straightforward series of fistfights so he's trying a different approach?
Either way, I doubt the storyline with Giddeon is over. Even if it is, though, I'm really enjoying that this remake throws the original script out, because it's fun to speculate and fun to play spot-the-differences. Like maybe it IS Wallace, you know? Why not!
Though it is a shame that this is no longer a show about being a loser and 'leveling up' your life - the videogame conceipt is more of an aesthetic choice now and less of a thematic metaphor - and about the Canadian indie band scene.
On a final note, I know we're supposed to not like the scrubs - or would he be considered a fuckboy these days? - like Scott, but I always found him pretty relatable, personally. Especially because I was dating a woman when the comic came out, like, the idea that you landed this great girl but you need to fix yourself before you can date her... it resonated. :P
Anyway. Don't tell me how it ends XD I'm too obsessed to not finish this mini-series quickly, but I also only have an hour of free time a night.

"Man, I've got so much free time during winter break, what should I do?" And so, following this thought, I decided to watch 10 movies, forming a whole decade. I'll list what I watched, with a small summary and review for each!
1980 - Toward the Terra, the Humans and Mu are fighting, but eventually the greater foe, the huge world controlling computer system, and win. I liked how all of the characters changed and stayed affected by things that happened to them. A solid 9/10, and a good general recommendation!
1981 - Mobile Suit Gundam I, Humans fighting with big robot suits, Gundam, but war is hell. I'm sorry Gundam fans, but this movie to me was way too long and repetitive, I feel like it could have been two smaller movies. 5/10
1982 - Space Adventure Cobra The Movie, Cobra's just a guy fighting with his cool psycho gun, and he is always smoking a cigar. I didn't realize it was a power fantasy until he was surrounded by women and lots of people were in love with him, but still pretty good! 5.5/10
1983 - Crusher Joe, space fights and conspiracy! Really good, my other favorite of what I watched, and a solid 9/10!
1984 - Birth, humans vs inorganics, I did not really understand or like this movie, but I feel like it was more than likely pretty influential. 6/10
1985 - Fight!! Iczer-One, battling space aliens for the sake of the earth. I love the designs and horror elements, but I hate how Iczer treated her partner so that made it hard to watch for me. 6/10
1986 - Call Me Tonight, whenever he's turned on, he turns into a horrific monster for a little bit. Honestly? A fantastic, cute romcom were I liked both characters, plot, and design! 7.5/10
1987 - Laughing Target, is she a stalker, obsessed, or possesed? It's all three, and makes for a really good horror movie. 7/10
1988 - Appleseed, humanity fighting for a right to their future against a place with no room for them. I didn't really like it, but the Devilman level dub with all the added swears was pretty funny. 5.5/10
1989 - Demon Hunter Makaryūdo, devils vs humans and a fight for humanities future. Holy shit the harpy designs are really funny, and s pretty solid movie. 7/10
Sorry for the long post, and sorry if I didn't like your favorite movie. I might do this again for the 90s, but ten movies in five days is a lot so I'm tired. On a side note, it's really hard to find lists of all movies per year, and for some reason there were so many movies that I wanted to watch from 1986 so maybe I'll have another huge post about that year alone.

@lonlonranching thank you for tagging me!
I took so long because I couldn't make myself sit down and write, but something I discovered today made me want to talk about it:
currently listening: do we include music here? because today I found an album by Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp titled We're OK. But We're Lost Anyway. This day today honestly sucked and this was what literally revived me. Everything, from the song titles to fresh play with instrumental and vocals... small band that I am now a big fan of.
I mostly listen to music or various videoessays or podcasts while I am drawing. recently have been bonked on head with "philosophy tube" pretty hard. so I am in constant need of stuff to listen to and I want to check out magnus archives that you mentioned! I am in the mood for some horrors. There are some other horrors I am currently working on too,,
current obsession: drawing for the locked tomb, okay? I just made a few skeleton doodles in my textbook but it escalated quickly to me planning to draw every location and visualize magical and creepy ways of necromancy.. and the ladies ofc.. let's see how long I will last
other honorable mentions: grape & pineapple ice pops. ate two today while running around town at temperature over 40°C which is 104°F I guess? This is a torture, but these popsicles felt like the best thing I have ever put in my mouth. Cold green tea. Sports drinks that are lemon flavored. tomezeme's writing project and map for that world. mp100 always has my back as well. I can draw for any fandom I love but I always return to my moboblorbos.. In the evenings, swifts flying outside my window and very bright sunsets! (reason being hideously dusty air. yikes) Also, these cool handmade doorknobs I got in Germany. I wish I took picture of all of them in the basket, there were so many! They remind me of decor from Howl's moving castle a little.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
currently reading: I am midway "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See, recommended to me by my mom, which gives a look into women's life in 19th century China, and about a friendship of two girls, tied by a union called laotong. Often sad and disturbing, but interesting - though I am not sure that I am really enjoying the story itself.
currently watching: err, nothing much? But not in your sexy bookish way, but more like unable to concentrate on anything else besides drawing these days. Seriously, I would be so content with life where I just sit and draw most of the time, going on walks every day (somewhere where it's not so dusty and full of concrete..) or wait, like once a week we have a discord movie night with my friend and i'm showing samurai champloo to her..
choosing people to tag scares me so just please whoever sees this and wants to talk about stuff please do <3

Multiverse of Madness || SPOILERS
I understand people are mad about the Wanda thing but maybe it's because I've seen what they've done with her in the comics that I think this isn't as bad 💀
I really thought they were going to Daenerys Targaryen her and "put her down" and I would have really really hated that. I liked the scenes with the kids, I actually wish we've gotten more of that conflicted Wanda (the Profesor X scene would have been perfect for it)
Wanda is also def not dead so idk what are you worried about?? If you don't see a corpse they ain't dead AND even if you see the corpse they can still come back.
I wish we've gotten more mention of Vision and not just the kids (?) But also Vision would have helped Wanda snap out of it immediately so I guess I understand 😭
Doctor Strange... Was in this movie. Don't get me wrong he did his thing and all but I was here for my girl ♥️
I love America I really do love her. But at that point I was like what if we just let her kill the child?? You were all good with her murdering Vision for you so... Maybe just let her kill this one kid and that's it 🤷
They also had to make Wanda want to kill the lesbian so we couldn't say she was being an ally for rescuing the gay and the bisexual. They got us on a loop hole, I see what they did, it's twisted.
Anyway, America baby I'm glad you're with us. They showed her moms 🥺🥰. She was so cute and Xotchitl did an amazing job. I know people are mad that she isn't THE America Chavez yet but THIS is her origin story. In the original plan she was supposed to show up in Spiderman No Way Home with a better understanding of her powers, we just have to wait a little bit longer for that now. And her powers looked really cool, Loved the way they did the stars and everything really beautiful. Can't wait to see more from her.
I liked Christine Palmer and I'm glad they found a way for her to be a bit more involved on the story but what a waste of Rachel McAdams. She is such a talente relegated to being the non-girlfriend of Doctor Strange :/
Wong sweetie, I'm sorry for your loss but also just let her kill the child.
CLEA?! We are getting Clea?? And she's played by Charlize Theron??!!!! I'm obsessed
I feel like the people I went to see it with liked it and hated it more than me. I was there for Wanda and a good time, Wanda looked cool as hell. We got mentions of ACTUAL DEMONS I'M SO EXCITED FOR THAT YOU HAVE NO IDEA. I do think the witch as a symbol for powerful women and Wanda in this movie is going to make a good video essay for a YouTuber and I can't wait to see it. I think that's a general problem that goes beyond this movie
Finally Lizzie Olsen and Benedict Cumberbatch really acted this movie. Especially Elizabeth she had so much range here! The horror was fenomenal from her, the pain, the everything really. I honestly think she did more than the script to sell me this journey for Wanda.

I just watched X and absolutely loved it. I didn’t completely get what they were trying to say about sex, it gave me some gross ~porn is empowering~ vibes but it did have some points about religious fundamentalism and repression. Anyway. The pimp dude was clearly the bad guy here. Well not The bad guy but. If he hadn’t 1) lied to the old ppl about how many people would be staying 2) shot porn on their property without their consent 3) became scum who exploits women for money in the first place, none of this would have happened. I mean the other men are complicit too. But that guy was just the worst. Also I don’t completely get the motive of the old ppl killing. Was it just because they found out about the porn? Cuz like they had that televangelist sommaybe religious reasons? I may not be the most well read Christian but I’m still pretty sure Jesus doesn’t like murder. Unless the televangelist was of some other niche sect or cult that does endorse killing idk. It was the 70s so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was cults. Idk. I still had a good time without really needing a motive but yknow. The gore was amazing, it took over half the film for anyone to actually die but the buildup was really cool and tense and actually had me invested in the characters and everything. The tiny little reveal about the mc at the end kinda came out of nowhere, I feel like they could’ve hinted at that aspect a teeny bit more, but it still does very much make sense. Maybe an internal look into her struggle beforehand would’ve been nice idk. I heard they’re making a prequel or something which I’m super excited for. I really hope they don’t lean into the ~porn is empowering~ bullshit. Like this girl has clearly been traumatized by her upbringing and is just further traumatizing herself by going in the complete opposite direction. These men are just using you baby. Get outta there.
Also I’m obsessed with brittany snow in this. I’ve only seen her in would you rather and a handful of other non horror stuff but man her role in this movie,, I’d trust her with my life, I also like how she’s the stereotypical ‘slut’ horror character but she still has a personality and she’s sweet and I’d just die for her ok, and she’s one of the last to die and her death isn’t gratuitous or sexualized or anything which is so 🙏 And the part where she’s singing while the old lady is being sad got me emo for some reason. Like damn I came here to be shocked by some gore not have an existential crisis about aging. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

for the ask meme: 001 for awaked alan
send me a fandom - alan wake [disclaimer for the uninitiated: this is all about aw2, because i don't fucks with that man when he had a buzzcut, but the long hair and tortured 13 years in the dark place? yum.]
favorite character: sorry, babe, it's Alan. it's the tortured act of creation that also destroys you. it's how maybe sometimes it's better if the story ends [here]. it's there can be no why. it's the story is the monster the story is you you are the monster. it's not a loop it's a spiral. it's about being in the meta position to decide what the story should be and yet the story will always control you. it's narrative as collar and leash.
least favorite character: who's the nurse who is obsessed with Wake?
five favorite ships: do i have five? OBVIOUSLY Saga/Estevez. Saga/Jesse. Saga/Alice (the two women who went into the dark place on purpose and came out at will??). Tom Zane/the Koskela brothers, because i think they'd make some WILD art. i hope this somehow impresses upon the reader that while i didn't list her as my favorite, i do love Saga and also i think she deserves a queer relationship. maybe her and her husband open their marriage and Logan gets two moms. i think Estevez would be SO weird and unsettling in a way that any child between 8-13 would find Cool.
character i find most attractive: Kiran Estevez
character i would marry:...would i marry anyone in the awake alan universe? hm. seems risky. on the other hand...access to paranatural shit. Estevez.
character i would be best friends with: Saga. we could bond over sweaters and torment people with dumb puns.
a random thought: Alan is like, in-universe Stephen King, yeah? there's all these references to "genre bending" in the third act that feel gratuitous. but King seems like the closest irl analog.
an unpopular opinion: idk that it's unpopular but i DO hate Alan's speech in the final draft. "master of many worlds" gives me the ick. i love the bit where he revives and says "it's not a loop," etc., AND i like the implication that the clues in the final draft aren't a past self but a future one. but the speech is dumb and recenters him in a way that feels like it backtracks the part where he and Saga co-write the story.
my canon otp: too poly for this!
my non-canon otp: still too poly, but saga/estevez.
most badass character: torn between Saga because she survived a horror novel AND the pacific northwest as a Black woman, and Alice because she on-purpose suicide-baited her husband in order to make him self-actualize, which. real girlboss shit.
pairing i am not a fan of: i like Saga and Casey's relationship but i don't really get slash vibes from them.
character i feel the writers screwed up: Freya's utter lack of presence until the third act was a missed opportunity. like, we didn't NEED a full weird movie with deer motifs when we could've had the chance to see another side of Saga.
favorite friendship: obvs Saga and Casey. they cute.

Ok so I got more thoughts on the whole art school au:
Oh the Tokyo and the Kyoto schools are definitely rivals(which makes the whole shibuya art convention far more tense probably) . Which reminds me- Todo is also in textile/fashion and is either focused on making high quality gym clothes or on making pretty dresses (inspired by his one and only Takada)
I was really thinking on wether Gojo would be an artist in this au or not, since in all “no powers” au’s he’s in I just default him to a physics professor. But if he is then he absolutely just fucks around by incorporating physics into his art any way he can think of. Like very complex art installations or sculptures made to show off the weirdass stuff you can make by abusing the laws of physics. Geto on the other hand is into fine arts (mostly oil painting) but is obsessed with adding in philosophical or religious symbolism in his paintings. If Kenjaku was real in this universe then he’s probably the paint fumes Geto keeps huffing (that are most likely melting his brain as we speak)
Also just because this is an art school au doesn’t mean that Mahito doesn’t almost kill someone. Multiple times. I mean, it’s the viewers that should be more careful around the hanging sculptures, and yes he did make sure that the threads that attach them to the ceiling are secure! And him almost throwing a box cutter at someone was just a happy accident. (Side note I think his art would be focused heavily on body horror, the grotesque, or just generally being off-putting or gory. Something like Cao Hui’s “I Want To Play God”. Be warned for body horror tho when searching that up, but it is really cool)(another side note: Hanami would make beautiful ceramic flowers)
Since we mentioned throwing sharp objects at people and Nobara seems like the type to have chased boys with scissors in middle school, imagine how dangerous she would be now. Because not only does she have access to scissors to chase you with, she also has saws, lino cutters, hammers and many more very dangerous objects. Maybe don’t rile her up while she’s in the workshop. Or don’t rile her up at all.
Each year Maki welds herself a sword to see how much she’s improved
Megumi loves drawing and illustrating animals and most of his sketchbooks are so full that they’re all puffed up and can’t even close properly anymore. They look like they’ve been thru war. He also uses his art skills to shitpost a lot.
Since Yuuji is a movie nerd I think he’s love doing subtle merch based on the movies he likes
ahhhhhhh okay i was watching basketball so i couldn't give this my full attention but i was itching to reply all nighttttt
eeeek i love a rivalry. Also, I love Todo in textiles. I feel like he would make such simple but meticulously constructed clothes. Like the kind that you don't even know how good they are unless you actually know shit about clothes. Also, por que no los dos, he can make really pretty athletic wear for women. Tennis dresses and lounge wear and golf skirts, and body suits. Oooh and his dream could be to get a contract with Takada, or do a promotion with her. And he would tell her she's his muse and everything he's made had been inspired by her.... or that's his dream at least.
OH and he would judge guys by their taste in girls because it's literally their taste in fashion as well and he's passionate about the type of girl you design for....oh it all fits soooo well. I love him.
okay, so to ME i always see Gojo as more of a math guy, because his powers are actually more math based and conceptual than they are physics based. Like he's not actually fucking with the extant laws of the material universe so much as he is bringing math concepts into reality through magic-infused imagination. But i'm a math person, and fundamentally there's not enough of a difference if you're not a math and physics person and it is physics in a way like he's applying math concepts to physical space so it makes sense to make him a physics professor like everyone does because you use a lot of math in physics especially quantum physics dealing in higher dimensions which is basically what he's doing morphing spacetime and it's getting really in the weeds and particular to make the distinction between math and physics at that point but I am who I am...
So ANYWAY my point is, it would be really cool for him to do like, some kind of digital art, computer graphics type thing? and maybe he like designs a lot on a computer based on math concepts and things and then translates them into physical space in ways that completely fuck your mind. like somehow he recreates infinite fractals in physical space and you can't figure out why your mind is short circuiting to make this work but it does. Idk I think that would be really cool. And he would design mcescher like gallery spaces that you get turned around in and can't figure out how you got to where you are from where you were. like somehow you went downstairs and ended up a floor up. And no one can figure it out but he does it somehow.
Not kenjaku is the paint fumes geto is huffing TToTT im deaddd. okay so what if in school he did a whole series on moral responsibilities and the burden of responsibility on the leaders of society and then it started getting weird and he started spouting off a bunch of nonsensical stuff about the weak consuming and overtaking the strong and how he had to fight back and his art started to get very warped and a little horrific and then it turned out the paint thinner he used was getting recalled and there was a class action lawsuit cause it was causing hallucinations and lots of other health issues and once he switched he pretty much chilled out but it was a very formative experience for him. and also that was his masters thesis project or something lmao. wouldn't that be so silly haha goofy.
YES DISASTER CURSES AS PART OF THE AU!!! I love it. I never know how to incorporate them but this is soooo perfect and I love your idea for Mahito. that series you recommended as inspo for him is so sick and i think that makes so much sense as something he would make. I actually love what you were saying the other day about how Mahito is maybe questionable with how they're portrayed in canon with their presentation + their power set, but making that more into the actual ideas of self-embodiment of perfection. like, I get to create my own body because I am the soul and I form my body around myself. But it doesn't have to be any less violent or gory. like I can see his ideal project being like a fucked up body works, like preservation and essentially taxidermy? but breaking more boundaries to form artistic depictions of whatever ideal human form he wants. But he probably can't actually find a way to get away with that, so he has to settle.
I could see him setting up performance art where he get models and twists them into still doable but grotesque shapes, or simulates their bodies being morphed, or makes them intertwine to form one larger body in an unconventional shape. and i could see him also instructing them to wail in pain for the full exhibit run time. And I could see it being very disturbing to the patrons lol.
Also, "I want to play God" reminded me of some artwork i saw on here that i can't find anymore. it was like marble tile and walls and stuff that decomposed like flesh. it was super gory and super cool. I wish I knew the artist or anything to search...
How cool would it be for Hanami to combine ceramics and earthenware with literal living plants and have a literal live exhibit. The plants could grow through cracks and holes and stuff in the pots and bud and flower. or there could be ceramic flowers mixed in and you wouldn't always know which were ceramic or glass or artificial basically depending on the day you went because they're so true to life that if the plant is in the same stage of flowering you might not be able to pick them out.
Ooooh or better yet, what if she used live plants as part of the process in making her pieces and then fired them in the kiln burning the plants alive. as symbolism basically. it's almost an invisible performance art because part of the art is the process of destroying nature to get a product. And also what if she tried to gas her audience one time at an exhibit as a commentary on fossil fuels.
I think it'd be cool for Hanami and Jogo to work together on something, being both earth based. Also, what's Dagon up to? Something to do with cycles of life and death in the sea. What school are they all at?
Lmaoooo I can just picture Nobara flailing saws and power tools and hammers around when someone pisses her off just completely negating safety protocols. She has definitely considered (or threatened to) shove someone's face into a running band saw.
Do you think Maki would give daggers as gifts? I like to think she would. Even when it is totally not appreciated by the person she's gifting to. She would totally be one of those people who caries a hunting knife around for some reason and says it's totally normal. And she'd be great in a pinch, so who's correct?
I love Megumi being incredible at animal anatomy of basically any kind. And just knowing lots of shit about animals. He gets pissed off if you call a koala a bear and he can tell the difference between a crocodile and an alligator immediately. One time Yuuji asks him to draw a tiger or something for a design and he whips it up in 10 minutes flat. ooooh would megumi be a sick tattoo artist??
it would be so cool if Yuuji started off like making fan designs and selling them on redbubble or something OR BETTER doing cosplay. He could make some sick hoodies and streetwear stuff based on like star wars designs and other sci-fi and horror.
You got my imagination going. If any of this is like not vibing to you feel free to discard, i just had fun thinking about it.
Did we talk about what Yuuta is doing? or Nanami???? Omgomg also what if like, the students have to have a sort of academic advisor except they're more like a mentor situation??? so like Megumi's advisor would be gojo probably. but it could also be Geto if he's focusing more on the fine arts aspects...or Nanami if he's got more of a business & product focus. Idk it would be really cool to pair them up. Like depending on where the disaster curses are would they be with geto? Oh also, are the twins here?? so much to consider!

31 Days of Horror Day Five: Ginger Snaps
A movie I have always been looking forward to, but never thought to just watch. Also, this is the third werewolf movie I have watched this week. I am loving this trend.
Ginger Snaps (Released in 2000) was directed by John Fawcett and written by Karen Walton. It's about sisters Brigette and Ginger Fitzgerald (Played by Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle respectively), two teenagers obsessed with death. Ginger is attacked by a werewolf and (along with getting her first period) starts to slowly turn into a lycanthrope. Brigette's relationship with Ginger is put through the wringer, as she tries to figure out how to help stop her sister from being completely lost to the monster she's becoming.
As usual, I enjoyed the performances of both leads in this movie. Several moments in this movie reminded me of my Jennifer's Body watch from March, and it's really cool to see how much this Ginger Snaps inspired elements of Jennifer's Body. I think I like Ginger Snaps better than Jennifer's Body. This time though, I enjoyed the villainous performance of Katharine Isabelle the most. (There is something about women covered in fake blood.)
There was so much about this movie to like. The practical effects, the siblings' relationship, the two instances of infection and turning we saw, Sam's whole arc in the movie.
I am really glad I went into this movie blind. It was so worth the wait! :D Thanks internet for not spoiling it! :D

May 13: A Simple Favor
I ordered in dinner and watched A Simple Favor because it seemed like a fun sort of movie to improve my mood or at least distract me. I’ve been meaning to watch it for a while, partly because it looked like an enjoyable thriller, partly because I wanted to see Blake Lively looking hot as fuck in those suits, and partly for a secret third and silly reason.
Anyway, I liked it a lot! The last 15-20 minutes, maybe everything from the graveyard scene on, was a little weak, in the way that a lot of thrillers (and horrors) are weak: the best part is the build up and when you actually start learning the answers and seeing the climactic action, it’s disappointing, less interesting than whatever you might have vaguely pictured. I think many films in these genres also overthink the need for a Big Climax—something that somehow justifies all the build up by being very gory or having a lot of extra twists or turns or whatever—and end up with something dull. I think Favor had a bit of that issue. It made me think of that Community episode that was nothing BUT twists and that’s… not great for it lol. Like it wasn’t sure what to do with itself so it just kind of… reached for All the Cliches.
But even that is a fairly small complaint. Most of the film before that exceeded my expectations by a lot. It kept me on my toes and had me trying to predict what the next twist would be. Who was lying? Would Stephanie and Emily run away together? Was Sean the actual bad guy? Was STEPHANIE the actual bad guy? I’m not gonna lie, at one point I was quite convinced that there were Clues that she was just as much of a liar and manipulator as Emily was (the backstory with her brother, the ease with which she moved into Emily’s life, the use of the vlog as a narrative-device implying that she is good at creating a persona, etc.) and that ultimately we might find that Stephanie was responsible for Emily’s disappearance or perhaps working with her, etc. Which I actually do think could have been cool. I was hoping for one of those sequences where you see the whole movie again but this time with extra bits filled in that tell a totally different story… Oh well.
But ultimately both Emily and Stephanie were basically who I thought they were up front. (And Sean was just a wet noodle of a man. No mystery there either.) I didn’t really think Emily was so hard to figure out or so mysterious or unusual. She was basically just a liar and sociopath? In the very literal sense that she really didn’t believe in the reality of other people. That’s it. I mean, it’s not hard to wrap one’s head around really.
My biggest disappointment with the movie was that we didn’t get to see more of her. I anticipated this would be my biggest disappointment based on the general premise of the film and also because I know no one would put Blake Lively looking like That in a suit opposite a female co-star if they weren’t intending to draw in wlw viewers and then disappointing them deeply, so. Yeah. Saw that coming. And all that is true because there was definitely a lot of interesting stuff between the “best friends” that wasn’t fully explored. But I also think that when Emily is on screen, she’s so much more interesting than when people are just talking about her or telling stories.
I just have a real soft spot for stories where two characters form a quick and intense friendship based on one’s characters extremely charismatic nature, and then the other character is Ruined for life, or at least permanently altered in some way. Hill House. Tinker Tailor. Etc. No particular reason I love these narratives so much. And that’s definitely what Stephanie and Emily have at first: Emily is beautiful and powerful and she gives Stephanie permission not to say I’m sorry; she shows a real interest in her, or seems to; she seems to hold Secret Knowledge. Of course Stephanie is obsessed with her, and of course she’d then get ever more tangled in her life. Because they’re both women, there’s a bit of the double-thing going on: Stephanie trying on her life, trying on her clothes, sleeping with her husband. Because Blake Lively looks like That, there’s a bit of the erotic thriller too: the romantic slow-walk in the rain, the…literal making out on the couch. That all of this drags Stephanie down and in some way makes her a different person is definitely, like, my kink. But it works best when she’s actually interacting with Emily, which she doesn’t actually do that much. So there was a bit of that frustrating trope where the same-sex-romance dynamic is swapped out for an opposite-sex-romance dynamic through the use of an avatar. Like, Sean could have been an interesting character, but at the end of the day, I think he was just…there, to represent Emily when Emily wasn’t around. And he’s no Emily lol.
I sound like I’m being so harsh! Honestly, I really, really liked the film. It was fun, it was clever, it was funny, it was stylish, it was hot—it had sort of a poor ending, but it wasn’t an awful one, and anyway I can live with that. I would watch it again.

FEAR THE MOVIE 1996 NUDE SENES MOVIE
FEAR THE MOVIE 1996 NUDE SENES TV
Usually moist, fleshy kind…They only need to be knocked down.” Actually that’s why they moved me around so much. “You know what they all have in common, Gary? Weak walls. “I grew up in a lot of different places,” David says. Nicole articulates her frustration: “Everyone says one thing and then does another.” David is an interloper to the inner sanctum of the family, and vagina and home meld in other interesting ways. David seemed innocuous, even appealing, but so is a Trojan horse. Before, Nicole had worn a necklace with the words “Daddy’s Girl.” After David’s arrival, daddy is left picking up condom wrappers off her bedroom floor, a metaphor for the latent threat boyfriends pose to the domestic space. Or rather, the mistake was letting David in to begin with. And her mistake was thinking she could replace him. Nicole realizes the daughter’s true protector has been her father (William Peterson) all along. That’s why they’re trying to keep us apart.” “You got to listen to me, Nicole…You got to use the one thing you have that can hear the real me…It’s here,” he says thrusting his hand up her skirt.
FEAR THE MOVIE 1996 NUDE SENES MOVIE
Suffice it to say, the movie shaped my initial understandings of young men and turned me off to dating in my teens.Īt the apex of his sexual violence, David compels intercourse off screen and later assaults Nicole in a public restroom. As I watched him, I realized domestic violence was not restricted to the adult world it could potentially play out among mall rats and cool kids. I had discovered Sleeping with the Enemy not long before, but David’s erratic aggression was something else entirely. In Fear, however, the shoe was suddenly on the other foot.Īs a teenybopper, barely into double digits, I felt an instant attraction to Fear. What’s more, cinematic versions of obsessive lovers were embodied almost exclusively by females in the late eighties and early nineties-for example, Fatal Attraction (1987), Single White Female (1992), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992 ), Poison Ivy (1992), and The Crush (1993). No demons, vampires, or masked murderers are featured in this flick-just a violent teenaged sociopath named David (Mark Wahlberg). Its antagonist is not the typical movie monster. Here are some of Tinseltown's biggest stars - both women and men - who have had no problem doing nude scenes for the sake of their jobs in film and TV.James Foley’s Fear (1996) is probably one of the more neglected horror films. But even some A-listers have continued to agree to filming on-screen nudity, even after they've won Oscars or Emmys or headlined blockbuster franchises.
FEAR THE MOVIE 1996 NUDE SENES TV
Often it's the up-and-comers who bare it all - in movies and sometimes even TV - in order to break into Hollywood, and once they're established actors, they usually never have to go nude again. What would campy horror movies be, for example, without naked campers getting their comeuppance? While nudity can sometimes be classy and used for artistic purposes, it's also occasionally used for pure exploitation - even when it's all in good fun. But even some PG movies have allowed breasts and butts to appear on screen, like Airplane! or Splash (the rules were more relaxed about non-sexually-oriented nudity back in the '80s). Cinema has been intrinsically linked to sex scenes ever since the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board allowed nudity in R-rated movies.
