This burly Medieval hand axe would have been an excellent sidearm for a bowman, crossbowman or a foot soldier armed with a polearm – it also would have been well suited as an easily wielded axe for a cavalryman. A tough and affordable back-up weapon, it would have been well-suited to the rigors of campaign and in a scrum its axe could inflict powerful cleaving and concussive blows on even capably armored foes. It could double as a camp tool for light to moderate duties and could be used to shape and sharpen wooden stakes which could be deployed to protect the bowmen from cavalry. This bowmans axe has a head of high carbon steel which is mounted and pinned to a thick haft of hardwood.
Been playing Final Fantasy games for the last couple months, so I've got a super self-indulgent fic idea brewing. Which means its the perfect time to go back and rework an old gunblade idea I drew up years ago.
In the process of trying to fix the way too big handles, I ended up making a couple variants.
So this first version is more gun-like. The blade swings into position when you turn a little knob (it's right next to the Cl in my watermark in the gun mode image). Having to constantly flip it around when switching modes could get awkward I guess. But I like having the sword handle double as a stock cause you could get more accuracy (even though the iron sights are on the side which would take some getting used to).
This is closer to the original idea, which was to simplify the idea behind Blazefire Saber from FFXIII. This one has a selector switch designed to mimic the hammer of a revolver. You might have to hold it by the middle when switching maybe?
So long story short, I was wondering if anyone had any preference of one over the other? This is the signature weapon of (one of) the main characters, but there's an organization that uses gunblade weapons exclusively so both designs could end up adopted into the project.
(For reference, this is a 12-gauge shotgun, cause the gunblade that appears in Parasite Eve 2 is a shotgun, and the shells for Squall's gunblade shown in the opening of FFVIII look like shotgun shells.)
hi its been a hot second but I've been makin shirts over on @lemniscate-vinyls
anyway i have put waaaay too much thought into warhammer physics
idk how feasible any of this shit would actually be in a weapon of war, but deadblow hammers are a real thing and ice axe handles are bent funny for wrist and hand ergonomics, so. Hammer smash.
Here's a pair of katanas I drew for my untitled Final Fantasy fic project.
Starting off with a comparison of the two blades. The longer, blue one is Masamune and the shorter red one is Muramasa. These two blades are wielded by an as yet unnamed Burmecian character in my fic. He predominantly uses Masamune, only drawing Muramasa when the stakes are dire, and very rarely dual wielding.
Masamune
Masamune was custom built after its wielder became a l'Cie for Leviathan. The blade is primarily made from orichalcum and mythril, allowing it to resonate with the magical powers granted to him by the fal'Cie and enhancing said magical powers.
A shard of materia was inserted into the weapon's kashira to expand the wielder's magic. Being a l'Cie of Leviathan, he has water magic, and the materia allows him to flash freeze manifested water.
Raindrop Damascus pattering was used in the construction of the blade.
A symbol on the habaki, it's an aquatic flowering plant.
Muramasa
Primarily constructed from scarletite and adamantite, Muramasa is a nearly indestructible weapon.
The handle is partly made of bleached behemoth horn.
Another flower based symbol.
I was going to do ladder pattern Damascus with this sword, but I started out with just stripes and honestly actual Damascus patterning is WAY too complicated to reproduce with Sketchup. And it would look like a mess with the whole weapon in view.
