XIV - The Coin (Temperance)

Here is the first card of the “cartoon” edition of An Unofficial Merlin Tarot! I ended up started with The Coin, and in the bottom picture, you can see the original painting of mine with it. And while now I’m making a whole second Merlin tarot deck, at least this time, everything has been planned out for each card. Next will be Courage (Strength)!

But yeah, same with the card in my original deck, I thought Merlin and Arthur being “two sides of the same coin” was a no-brainer.

Spring time means...flowers? And boys in love, apparently. I usually don't like drawing flowers, but digital vs. traditional is super different, so I might have to reconsider since it was actually nice?!! I guess it depends what kind of flower you draw, and thankfully carnations are on the easier side and floofy. You can also view This Heart of Mine on AO3. This piece was drawn for @merlintarotfest using The Citadel Oracle Deck for a card reading of The Shepherd (celebration and/or family), The Thief (seizing the moment and/or selfishness), and The Acolyte: (new projects and/or learning). Also fills a @merlinbingo artist square using the hex color #4FB477 (aka a really gorgeous and nice green for the spring!).

And okay, I guess my inspo really wanted to see soft boys having a stolen moment of love. I'm going to assume Arthur and Merlin don't have a lot of time to take a breather to express their feelings for each other openly, so in this moment, that's what they get. That's totally what they deserve too, right? More love and hugs and Nice Things. I actually like how this piece came out, considering that this derived from a WIP I ended up scrapping, but what totally influenced my colour palette. Sometimes, going with the flow can make some magical things happen. Anyway, happy April, and if it's nice where you are, go enjoy the outdoors!

I haven't tried my hand at Merlin fanart since I was a pixel artist, so this was fun! :D Also had fun trying out something new with the style. I took the oracle card drawn (The Witch) and used it both to determine the content (Morgana) and how I would handle the project (experimentation).

I feel like I should have added more details in some parts, but I ended up finishing these up in the midst of having Covid, so I was too tired to do much more than finish them up RIP

XII - The Hanged Man

Finally sat down and painted one of the cards that I had already drawn out.

Anyway, here is the cartoon version of this card. As with my original deck, I chose Arthur as he was dying for The Hanged Man. The whole episode feels suspended in a sense as we see Arthur start to see Merlin in a different light now that he knows he has magic. He sees that he is still Merlin, but he’s also now able to see all of Merlin. Though it had to come at a time of suffering for Arthur.

Next, I’ll probably go ahead and paint one of the court cards. When I did the original deck, I went majors, court cards, and then the rest of the minors, but this time since I have cards and information for each card already, I might go to whatever card I want to paint next regardless if they are major or minor.

It is one of the designs I used for my new washi tape that is Merlin themed, is on of the cups that Anhora used in his final test for Arthur and Merlin, and of course te flowers have meaning too, the yellow acacia represents "Secret love" and the Ambrosia "Love returned".

Oh, hey! First time drawing Merthur in...over a decade? Whoops. I've never drawn these two in a muted colour way before, so this was fun! You can also view Waiting For This Moment on AO3. Drawn for @merlintarotfest using the tarot card reading of Ace of Cups (love and/or new relationships), Three of Cups (celebration) and The Chariot (action and/or determination). Also fills in a @merlinbingo artist square using the hex color #5DFDCB (aka bright aqua green). I didn't realise how much I missed drawing these two dummies until I started making this piece. I always keep saying hair is awesome to draw, but gods, I have to thank Arthur and Merlin for having simple and nice hair to work with. Bless. 🙏🥰 And the influence of water definitely came from the Cups cards, since we think of emotions as things that flow between us. I could definitely see water symbolising that in a tangible manner, and lbh, there are so many Feels between Merthur that it made sense to portray them as vulnerable and you know, finally accepting what they have with each other. This might be my cue to start drawing more Merlin art again. Let me know if you'd like to see more!

(If you want to keep your same cards from rounds 1 or 2 and finish your fanwork for round 3, that is also allowed! No need to re-sign up!)

Check out the FAQs/Rules HERE. This round we have added the option to pull a 10-card Celtic Cross spread with your Tarot cards.

Basic Info: The Merlin Tarot Fest is a fanfic and fanart challenge using tarot and oracle cards as prompts. The fanworks do not need to focus on or even include tarot, but rather will be inspired by randomly pulled card(s). Each participant will be given their own card/card combination to inspire them! You will be able to decide if you want 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 cards for your inspiration. You will also be able to choose your pull from a limited selection of different tarot & oracle decks.

Requirements: For fanfic, writers must write a story of at least 750 words. For fanart, artists must create at least 1 completed piece.

Posting will be open JULY 1 - SEPTEMBER 30

Posting will not be scheduled or assigned. All participants can feel free to post to the AO3 collection anytime within the allotted posting time frame. The collection is currently closed and will reopen on July 1st.
