thinking about mike hanlon age 19, attending the local community college, not really managing to make any new friends, always feeling the loss of his friends stirring deep in his chest whenever he tries to talk to someone. feeling it choke him whenever he sees someone with red hair, someone who talks a little too fast, someone with big ol' glasses.
mike hanlon sitting in the dining room all by himself staring at the phone and telling himself not to call because he knows it'll just break his heart all over again. mike dialing in bill's new number like he's called it a thousand times and listening to bill on the other end ask who is calling, knowing he needs to say "sorry wrong number" and hang up but instead saying "it's mike" and hoping foolishly that something will make him remember. mike hanging up before bill can say "i'm sorry, i don't know any mikes, you must have the wrong number."
mike hanlon age 35 calling the losers at odd hours and waiting for the calls to go to voice mail so he can hear the losers saying their names. ben picks up once, sad and drunk and barely coherent and mike comforts him into sleep. he stops calling after that.

every year, one member of the club picks the subject for a group costume. that year, it was Ben's turn...
most self indulgent thing I have ever drawn in my life lmaooo. I was going to have them in accurate costumes at first, but knowing it's the 90s, I thought it would be more fun to try to imagine how they might do it themselves instead. I want to do another one based on this as well, but I'm not sure if I'll have enough time, so I'm just posting this now...

Mike wonders how much longer Richie’s shenanigans will last before he’s booted out for blabbing so loudly. Not to mention drinking something so sticky near the return cart… Still, listening to his voices never fails to cheer him up during his otherwise dull shifts at the Derry Public Library.
In another life where I am better at writing, Richie and Mike friendship dynamics would always be at the top of my "details to include" list in my fics.

richie literally has chemistry with ALL of the og losers plus mike in the book. why dont they show any of that in the movie. like i get hes 'flirty' in the movie but.. in the book he held hands with mike, kept bringing up bill not stuttering all the time (a whole page was dedicated to showing how mesmerized he was about it? and he brought it up 10 pages later.), he heard a bird noise and thought "hey stan would know what kind of bird that is :)". LIKE HELLO WE GOT NONE OF THAT IN THE MOVIE. you people are sick and twisted. we got reddie in the movies and i thank god for that but really??? you are gonna deprive me of this? wow.

the last three losers left in derry (i headcanon stan and richie to be the last to leave, so stan, richie, and mike) having at this point realized that when you leave derry you forget and they sit down together to watch stand by me because they remember watching it when it came out and thinking it was the greatest but they're seventeen now and all of their friends have forgotten them and richie and stan know that they too will one day forget, and mike knows he will be the only one left who remembers, so suddenly the movie doesn't seem as wonderful as it used to. they wanted to turn it off when gordie started saying "i never had any friends later on like the ones i had when i was twelve" but just stared at the TV long after the credits had rolled instead.
