One more of the best girls! 🩷💙
This was one of ma gal's, @mikka-minns suggestions! And I LOVED working on this one!
Their outfits were inspired by these two beauties I found on Pinterest:
Tumblr media
I did say Lisa only wears pants on special occasions👀 but the mildly transparent shirt surely compensates for the lack of thighs!
This suit was one of the first things to pop on my Pinterest and it truly felt meant to be! The colours, the chains and this beautiful shirt were just SCREAMING Lisa Liang!💙
Harumi's outfit was harder to find, I knew I wanted a dress with a some sort of pattern but none of the options were really speaking to me, it was only when I stopped looking that this beauty came!
I loved this dress! Everything about it is a mix of sexy and delicate. Very Harumi, really!
And the final touch! Ibispaint had this adorable Japanese print I had too use! A little colour adjustment here and there and boom! Harumi's brand new dress!
I'm so happy with how both came out!! <3

Freddie's fashionable stage outfits and his early 70s inspiration:
Remembering the handsome ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky on his birthday 🎉 a
(March 12, 1889 – March 8, 1950)
Vaslav Nijinsky was a ballet dancer and choreographer, best known as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. Was referred to as the century.
He was born in kyiv to Polish parents, Nijinsky grew up in Imperial Russia, but considered himself Polish. He was celebrated for his virtuosity and for the depth and intensity of his characterizations. He could dance en pointe, a rare skill among male dancers at the time, and was admired for his seemingly defensive leaps from gravity.
The legendary Vaslav Nijinsky was a big inspiration for Freddie Mercury. His stage costumes were an essential part of his personality, always distinctive and striking. He wore some color variations of costumes or jerseys inspired by the costume worn by Nijinsky in "Carnival" 1910 (the harlequin costume).
Inspired again by the ballet The Afternoon of a Faun, Freddie shaved off his iconic mustache to portray the star of the original 1912 production for Queen's 1984 video "I Want To Break Free."
👑 “I dress fabulously but tastefully, and I have fun with my clothes on stage....
Art school teaches you to be more fashion conscious, to always be one step ahead. I like to think that we're exploring different areas, and that's our interest as well.
👑 We know our songs speak for themselves, and if you picked up a really shitty song, just because you're wearing gorgeous clothes doesn't mean it would sound any better. I always thought, "Oh! Don't take yourself so seriously. And the first way to do that is to put on a ridiculous costume. I really liked ballet, I wore ballet shoes and tights on stage, it "It's a wink. It was just something I was interested in at that point. I tried to incorporate it into the stage performance to enhance the music we played but it didn't work, I wouldn't.Also, I liked Nijinsky's costume (a black and white harlequin jersey).
👑 As far as I'm concerned, we're putting on a show and it's not just an album piece. It’s a theatrical event!
I want to bring my music to entertainment with all the costumes and lights. It's an evolution of music and I felt, for lack of better words, as our music matured and refined, our stage performance should too. Our songs needed a different interpretation, and that's what we're trying to do. We're rock 'n' rollers at heart, but presentation is so important and it's something a lot of bands miss out on. "
~Freddie Mercury
👑 “I enlisted the help of a former colleague from my film costume design days, Natasha Kornilov, who made leotards for ballet dancers. Freddie didn't visit them. I just took their measurements and visited them in their work premises. Every time he had new design ideas for a jersey costume, we called them and shared the details, and they were ready in one 👑 He went from simple black and white to harlequin patterns, followed by sequin leotards and legless resembling Victorian men's swimming trunks. It was totally 🤩 gross and for Freddie, they got the right result on stage. "
~David Minnes
❤️👑 Mary Austin even gave Freddie a high gloss cassette about Nijinsky as a gift. She had written Freddie and added:
“To the true artist that you are. ' ♥️

Parties
What makes a party? Amy Sedaris once wrote:
“When you see the word "party"...don't think of pony kegs and loud Southern rock or cigarillos and business women. Don't think of pools and diving for loose change. Don't think about cockfights - even though it's hard not to. Don't think tiki lights and fruity cocktails served in coconut shells on the patio, or a large group of drunken seamen clustered together shouting over each other. Think simplicity."
Parties are as old as homo sapiens themselves. But for most people, the thing that makes a party a party and not just a meeting with snacks is usually the music; preferably upbeat, and preferably loud.
Buddy Bolden was somebody who knew about loud music and parties. It was said that when he played in New Orleans you could hear him from across the river. And his song Funky Butt was, as Danny Barker once put it, "a reference to the olfactory effect of an auditorium packed full of sweaty people "dancing close together and belly rubbing." That's definitely one way to party.
Tumblr media
The Bolden band around 1905 (top: Jimmy Johnson, bass; Bolden, cornet; Willy Cornish, valve trombone; Willy Warner, clarinet; bottom: Brock Mumford, guitar; Frank Lewis, clarinet)
Even though he's considered the King of Jazz, there are no known recordings of Buddy Bolden, who improvised his music and never wrote it down. Really the only thing we have to go by is Jelly Roll Morton's rendition, which came to be known as Buddy Bolden Blues or I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say.
undefined
youtube
Jelly Roll Morton wasn't a man who shied away from a party. He made a name for himself playing ragtime in the brothels of New Orleans, and ragtime was, of course, known as the Devil's music. His rendition of Buddy Bolden Blues was considered so rude at the time that it was offensive even just to whistle it on the streets. Ruder still when you find out what Jelly Roll means. Or olfactory.
Some parties are planned and some are spontaneous. The difference between an average day at work and a spontaneous party could be as simple as the the presence of some unattended bongos, like in this scene from Hellzapoppin' -  a weird film from 1941 with one of the most iconic dance scenes ever created.
undefined
youtube
That was Frances "Mickey" Jones, WiIliam Downes, Norma Miller, Billy Ricker, Willamae Ricker, Al Minns, Ann Johnson and Frankie Manning, also known as Whiteys Lindy Hoppers - all dancing to music by the Slim Slam band.
When a dance floor is involved, parties become divisive: you're either on the dance floor or you're not. The dance floor is where life plays out, where you define yourself, where acquaintances become something more. In an American high school scenario, the dance floor is a status symbol. Being on the dance floor with the right person is everything.
undefined
youtube
Good parties share a collective, unspoken energy. Maybe all parties serve some sort of need to rebel against something oppressive, something that you need to escape. At the very least parties are a chance to act out in a way you otherwise can't.
One epic film party scene worth mentioning is from Olivier Assayas' Cold Water, if only because the scene goes on for about thirty minutes. The director admits that at some point he felt he was witnessing an experience that was "possibly stronger than whatever [ended] up on the screen."  It's a brilliant demonstration of that unspoken, rebellious energy that escalates into something unforgettable, something an onlooker would describe as a party even if party feels like too shallow of a word to describe it for those who are part of it.
undefined
vimeo
It should also be said that parties can be shallow, and not everyone likes a party. Some people see them as just another feature of the hedonic treadmill. Tim Holmes of Rolling Stones wrote about this next song in 1985, saying, "In "Swinging Party," life is a lilting series of ultimately empty, but nonetheless compulsory, soirees."
What inspires you to party?

Pirates Versus Privates - Disney - By DixieMame
An AU tale starring the Sensational Six! A steampunk romantic comedy, Private Minnie Mouse has one year to bring in Pirate Captain Mickey Mouse, before she has to leave the NAVY for good. But he has his own plans for her, and now she's become his treasure!
Complete
34 chapters
Absolutely loved this fanfic! A great alternative world of the iconic Mickey Mouse gang in a steampunk setting. It is a wonderful mix comedy, action, adventure and, of course, romance. Minne, who is young private, is known to be sucker for rules yet will not hesitate to break them for justice. She is sadly in an arranged marriage with Mortimer Mouse and hopes she can prove to her Captain Amelia (From Treasure Planet) that she is more than capable of doing her job. She encounters Mickey during his usual heists and those two formed a lovely bond. But he tricks her and escaped. However not without promising to take her away. Minne furious of what happened vowed to bring him back in jail and there is what begins the love-hate relationship. The usual couples such as Daisy and Donald, Horace and Clarabell, stay true to their stories with the exception of Millie for Goofy. There is also a mystery slowly unfolding in the background which just adds more excitement to the story. Beautifully written, and my summary to it does not hold justice for this fanfiction.

Marc Almond on clubbing with Freddie Mercury:
“I went down to Heaven nightclub, and Freddie was there. And he came over to me and said: ‘Cheer up, girl! You always look so bloody miserable, dressing in black and writing all these miserable songs. Come with me, girl. We’re gonna go for a dance.’ And he threw me over his shoulder and carried me on to the dance floor.”
I know all stories about Freddie are apocryphal, but I really want this to have happened exactly like this, with Freddie heaving Marc over his shoulder. (Well according to Phoebe, he did like to pick people up, literally.)
And on Bowie:
I wonder how he felt when Bowie recanted his claims of being bisexual in the early 80s. “Oh, I never really thought he was,” he says. “Bowie was an artistic free spirit and he probably did dabble a bit. It was the saying it that was great; no one had ever said that before.”
I agree with this, and what writer Simon Reynolds has said about Bowie walking back being bisexual. He’s important to LGBT culture, sure, but I think fans need him to be a bi icon more than he was one.

Freddie deserves a better biography. Not another Lesley Jones book or any of the cobbled together “journalist” penned bios, but something sensitively written that could introduce him to new fans in a proper way. A while ago I went looking for a particular book about Bowie, and even in my branch library, there was an entire shelf devoted to him. Freddie? Lesley Jones’s book was there, and the one Mark Blake book about Queen, but that was it. It’s baffling that there isn’t anything better. The best ones, of course, are the memoirs written by Jim and Phoebe and a few others who knew him, but they’re hard to find (I have an e-book of the Minns book and link to Jim’s in a PDF file that I can no longer find), and the language in them is dated. And even those feel... incomplete?
One of my favorite bands for the past twenty years is the Replacements. I know American indie bands of the 80s have little presence here, but I spent an inordinate of my time and dedication to a band that a whole lot of people haven’t heard of. But in 2016, Bob Mehr wrote a really excellent bio of them called Trouble Boys. Before that there was a middling “oral history,” one photo collection and a documentary about their fans. For a band that stayed a “cult” favorite, that’s more than I could have asked for. That no one can seem to get an artist as big as Freddie right is really unfair.

The reason why Mary’s comments that Freddie “saved her” from getting AIDS by leaving her sounds selfish either way it’s interpreted is that she, a woman, and straight woman at that isn’t “supposed to get AIDS,” as was the prevailing narrative at the time. “Innocent victims” were children and women with closeted partners who were HIV-positive. Gay men, IV drug users were “asking for it” with their “risky behavior.” Casual bigotry is still bigotry. Generational context can only take you so far.

My #1 post of 2022
Now, I’m not a barbarian. If I am entering the home of someone from a culture in which wearing street shoes inside is a sign of disrespect, or if my shoes are covered in snow, mud, blood, condiments of any sort, lava, excrement, concrete dust, or biomedical hazardous waste, I’m of course going to take them off. And I don’t really need to be told to do so.
But barring shoes outright just to keep your floors clean is bringing a gun to a pillow fight. Turns out there’s already an effective old-fashioned way to achieve your goal of a clean floor while neither insulting my hygiene habits nor endangering my delicate, vulnerable, long-suffering feet: It’s called a doormat.
How sensitive of you to acknowledge different cultural values, but don’t wear shoes in someone’s home if they ask you to remove them because IT’S NOT YOUR HOUSE. Your delicate. long-suffering feet? Seriously? Baby.
