The helicopter set in Miss Saigon Oslo, as printed in the 2023 brochure
«One of the highlights in Miss Saigon is the legendary scene where a Huey helicopter lands in Saigon.
-If you stage Miss Saigon, you need the helicopter, says producer Karianne Jæger. (…)
One of those assisting the producers with background info is Stig Bakke from Ålgård in Norway. He owns and flies one of the very few remaining Bell UH-1E helicopters from the Vietnam war - better known under its nickname Huey.
In 1967 the American military bought 192 Hueys especially adapted for transport of weapons and food in Vietnam. Stig’s helicopter was in use in Da Nang in mid Vietnam from 1967 to 1970. After the Vietnam war only 36 Hueys returned to the US. Today only some 4-5 of them is considered fly-able. One of these belongs to Stig.
-I bought it from a Swede who bought it just before new export laws were introduced after 9/11. A complete and unique helicopter. I even have the flight books used during operation in Vietnam. (…)
One of the challenges on stage was to recreate the correct sound from the blades. Stig will likely recognize the sound when he attends the opening night!
The company building the overall sets and the most important stage prop is legendary Theatre Royal Plymouth’s workshop at TR2. (…) The task fascinated the whole staff, Sebastian Soper from TRP tells. Especially when asked to replicate a Huey helicopter. -A flying helicopter with movable rotor? Everyone wanted to work on this!
They used historical photos from the Vietnam war and a Huey set in plastic. The hull is of glass fibre. (…)»
Comment from the producer: «Historically Miss Saigon has been critizised for its political and cultural bias. We thus spent a lot of time understanding Vietnam and the musical’s historical context. We’ve worked with a cultural advisor with Vietnamese roots, Thùy-Linda Nguyen Luu, guiding us through the script to make it as correct as possible. But still: Miss Saigon is a musical, not a documentary on the Vietnam war. Our focus has been on singular human stories.»
